UPDATE (3/5): I can't say I'm too surprised but our first comment thread under new guidelines (see below) was not a complete success. While there are many examples of good-faith adherence, at other times this thread becomes a prime example of how NOT to behave. Trail Mixers are an unruly bunch and I would not have expected our first-ever attempt at establishing order to go smoothly. For some great advice from the always-eloquent MadMustard, see Best Comments. (New in our Cookbook: Ensenada Fish Tacos by Divalicias.) -- Craig

TOP TEN WAYS TO BE A BETTER COMMENTER
Report violations to cqtrailmix@verizon.net
Please also see the Preamble at Trail Mix Comenting Guide
-
Contribute new information to the discussion. At least scan the entire thread to see if what you are writing has already been said. Repeating yourself is also unhelpful. Relentlessly pressing the same argument with multiple posts, in a single thread or over a period of days, is another form of spam and subject to deletion. Persistent violators are subject to blocked access.
- Nobody likes a know-it-all. Thoughtful, knowledgeable commenters gain a following. Condescending smartypants are about as welcome on a blog as they are in someone's living room. They generally persuade no one and aggravate everyone. When fact-checking, pointing out a typo or dead link or asserting a dissenting opinion, do it in a respectful, friendly way.
- Be careful about your tone. As in email and other cyber communication, blog commenting is susceptible to misinterpretation because readers cannot hear the tone of your voice or see your facial expressions. Sarcasm, teasing, even an innocent joke can so easily be taken the wrong way in a public forum like this. Emoticons are helpful to clarify how you want your comment to be taken.
- Own your comment. Only registered Typepad users who have been approved by the host are allowed to post comments without moderation. Newly-registered users or those who haven't recently commented might see their first comment held for review. If so, send an email to cqtrailmix@verizon.net to expedite review and post future comments without delay. There are very few reasons why the host might not approve a new commenter, such as supplying a fake email address, impersonating others, trying to return afer being banned or devising a screen name clearly meant to insult another commenter or the blog community as a whole. See Typepad's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information about the responsibilities and rights of approved commenters on this blog. To register with Typepad, simply click "Sign in to comment on this entry" above the comment box at the end of the Comments section (to reach the section, click "Comments" in the byline below the headline of Craig's latest entry).
- Be succinct. Blog commenting is not a place for lengthy lectures. Keep it short and to the point. You will find that your comments will be much better read. Generally, comments beyond 150 words should be reviewed before posting, in case a bit of editing might improve the readability of what you have to say.
- Cite your sources with links or inline quoting. Copying and pasting large blocks of text from other sites is strictly off limits, even with links or identification of the source. It is best to summarize why you think the item is significant, provide a few quotes from it and ALWAYS include the link. Never paste quotes from another site without the link. Use url shortening tools such as tinyurl.com for lengthy addresses. Multiple links (3 or more) in a single comment are held for review by our spam filter -- two per comment only!
- Be clear about the subject or person you're addressing. There is nothing more confusing and maddening for a thread reader to come across a cryptic response to someone else's comment and have no idea what the dialogue is about. The easiest way to prevent this confusion in our blog is to right-click the date stamp on the comment you're addressing and copy the url that appears in your browser. Or in some cases you might just copy a particular quote into your response, but be sure to add the name of commenter.
- Be courteous. There will be moments of passion when things are said in anger. If you must attack, target the idea or the opinion -- but NEVER the person. Personal attacks are useless, tend to escalate hostilities and ruin the reading experience for everyone else. Such comments, even if isolated, are subject to deletion. An ongoing pattern of persistent violations will result in blocked access.
- Do not feed the trolls. As in life, there are always those who somehow enjoy surfing the internet to inject pointless vindictiveness. Many are classic passive aggressives who deliberately provoke others into a counterattack followed by acts of martyrdom. Don't let the terrorists win. Do NOT acknowledge these people with refutations, disagreements or even a mention of their screen name -- even when you are directly attacked by name. Responding in kind on their level is exactly what they want you to do. Be assured that your host will take action against chat bullies as soon as possible.
- Most of all, have fun. While we have commenters with a variety of views who often engage each other in vigorous debate, we also strive to be a genuine community. Sharing recipes, photos or other personal information is also welcome. Arguing might be fun at times, but a little fellowship in between makes for a better place.
(Thanks to Lifehacker Editor Gina Trapani for inspiring these guidelines.)

Hey Craig,
I haven't posted in eons, but I'm extremely curious about these new commenting rules. On the face of them, they're fair and can be followed. But truth be told, the concerns are that they will implemented unfairly by you.
The track record of this blog has been that if one is either perceived to be your friend or share an opinion with you, then they are given wide latitude in terms of their remarks. Insults can come from them and be explained away as "criticism" instead of a personal attack.
If they are not on your side on an issue, they are immediately termed a trouble maker. The echo chamber on both sides then begins to defend their "friend" and the blog degenerates into a morass. At that point, you come in with a passive aggressive ruling in favor the commenter on your side. And the cycle continues.
I think a key to having a healthy blog community is to be even handed in your comments and reprimands. Regardless of what I say or anyone else says, this is YOUR blog and if people are pissing on your carpet or throwing food in your kitchen, you need to call them out, regardless if they pat you on the back or think you're the best thing since sliced bread. Because all your guests need to feel respected, if you pick and choose who gets respected, then those who are left out will fill they have no other option than to return the disrepect back ten times harder. And no one then enjoys TM.

Great points regarding the current Republican Party.I keep wondering what the Republican Party will look like when the dust settles also. Will they still concern themselves with tax cuts and saying no to social programs or will they go the way that Steele says he wants the party to go?Maybe there will be someone emerge that will have new ideas or a new message or maybe they will try and reuse Reagan's or Newts? Its going to be Interesting to watch...

Tony, It is always good to remember that the Republican Party used to be the liberals. These ideas move back and forth across the spectrum, only the names change to protect the innocent.
The Democrats were the racists until the populists moved in and took them over.. Then they imported the Socialist and Communist inclinations in the 1930s. This was thwarted by FDR who brought in balance and saved the US from those "isms".
Then the Republicans became the racists, Newties and neocons took them over with the rise of reaganism and the importation of the born agains until they become the uglies of haters and cynics today.
The pendulum keeps swinging.

Not sure if I've mentioned this here before, but I've virtually weaned myself from the toxic diet of cable news...and I highly recommend that to anyone who wants to escape the madness and gain a real sense of perspective on our momentous times.
I'm all about sit-down-and-watch-closely, destination news programming these days -- CBS Evening News followed by NewsHour. News is rated and graded and ranked and explained. Not chopped and blended and pureed and spewed.

Champ - well said.
Tony - well said, and I couldn't agree more.
Lard - I am so sorry about the nasty trick played on you re split infinitives. I will admit to being a major aggressor on this because I am a flaming believer in split infitives. "Not to talk" is different from "to not talk" in my oppinion, so I do what I want. HA!
That makes me arrogant, I guess, but as an old English teacher, I am picky about wanting to be as specific as I can. Language is a living thing, I think, and it's going to fluctuate always. : )

Cappers make fun of the world. We started on a website run by the Sci-Fi Channel. It was a great community that I found by accident. I met Julia there. It was a MST3K-themed internet website. The Sci-Fi Channel downloaded feeds from their programming for us to make witty captions to. The Sci-Fi Channel site shut down many years ago. We now have three "capping sites". Each with their own appeal. Along the way, we started an egroup. We've had fights there from time to time. As far as I know there have only been 2 people who have ever been banned from this group. One guy was a repeated offender of the "Respect thy capper rule". He was banned and burned all his bridges before he left. The other guy trashed the group and then said "He was leaving to go find himself." Which prompted another guy to say, "Dan left to find himself, but himself had a head start!" Here is the website I like:

Yoo is on leave from Cal working at an Orange County law school but they don't want him either.
But a small group of local activists said they hope to stir up anger at the 14-year-old law school in the thick of conservative Orange County.
"Our aim is to get the man fired — he has no business being in our community," said Pat Alviso, 56, of Huntington Beach, who heads the Orange County chapter of Military Families Speak Out. Her son is a Marine serving in Afghanistan who completed two tours in Iraq.
Chapman law school alumnus Michael Penn agrees: "I think it's a black eye to the school "... To me, he's a war criminal."

I like most of the guides you posted, Craig, except for staying on topic. I quite often have nothing in particular to say about the topic. I also don't mind #1 saying wahoo.
The biggest problem I have, tho, is the long posting rule. Like Solar, once I get going I want to explain and that gets long. Frankly, I also like more than one or two sentences from others - helps me to get to know them.
So, there's really not much reason for me to take part. I don't want any more little voices in my head telling me I'm not acceptable. That's a promise to myself I'm going to stick

I don't know who Jamie is talking about, but calling someone a sociopath is pretty insulting. It's out of order, a serious accusation, and doesn't foster good will on the blog. This looks like a clear violation of Rule #7, Rule #8, and possibly Rule #4 (even though she's not anonymous). Will she be disciplined? Will it goes unpunished? Or will the person reacting be disciplined?

“I say to Grace (my Republican business partner) all the time that Lincoln wouldn't recognize the Republican Party of today...”
Tony, why would he? Lincoln would be a Democrat today because he was more liberal than any Republican had been then. So, no, he would not “recognize the Republican Party of today”. Besides, he was more ethical. Lincoln was a liberal. That’s why I don’t like the conservatives referencing him as one of theirs.
It’s been months since I’ve been on here but I can see not much has changed!!! You all sound like the current Republican Party. No agreement!!! No leader (who doesn’t completely control).

With that in mind, Chloe, will you be ignoring Jamie? If I've said a single disrespectful word on the blog today, please point it out. However, Jamie has called someone a sociopath. That is uncalled for and should be condemned by everyone on the blog. She wasn't prodded into it. No one insulted her. She even flaunted the rules by saying she was going to break the rules. Why did she do it? She knew there wouldn't be any ramifications, and hell, why not insult someone if you're not held to the same standard as everyone else?
A community of friends, family or those meeting because of a common interest, have to hold each other accountable. It may appear to be smart to ignore people you disagree with, and that's your right. But in reality, it's shows an intolerance for differing opinions, and a too easy way to simply hear voices that correspond to the voices in your own head.
I used to think the genius of this blog was that you could debate ideas. Now, it seems to be a blog of cliques. Sort of a blogsphere version of Guys and Dolls. LOL

I am really disturbed by all the earmarks in the new budget. I heard, but don't know which ones, that there are some duplications of earmarks from the stimulus bill. Obama has his own earmark which they are working to get his name off. I guess that is a change we can believe in.
Also there is an earmark in the budget on managing pig odor. I think with this porker of a budget, that earmark comes too late.

A friend of mine loves Joel. She worked for Air America Radio for a few years. As a result, she became friends with "TV's Frank" from MST3K, because he was working there for a brief time. BTW, Carl Levin added a $3.8 million dollar earmark for Tiger Stadium or what's left of it.

Here's the deal, Jamie. I believe in the universal theorem that for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction. The only thing you can do is modify your behavior so that it's beyond reproach. However, you can't plead martyrdom (as Craig defined it), if you're throwing bombs yourself.
The main point is that this isn't your house. It isn't my house. Neither of us has a right to point to someone and say, "They don't belong because I don't like them." For every time you thought people were ganging up on you, I'll you thought the people coming to your defense were simply supporting a friend. Different perspectives on the same situation.
Here's a suggestion and someone mentioned this earlier: Treat this as Day One of the blog. Here's your chance to be Christlike, Buddhalike, Messiahlike, Allahlike, or Humanistlike to give people a clean slate and let bygones be bygones. It will lead to a healthier blog and healthier conversation. It will also show who is really a small person versus a big person.

Here's one for the books!
Remeber when girls/women were told it was their fault when they were attacked because they looked too sexy or feminine? The idea was to play down the fact they were females.
Well there's a new attacker at the Berkely campus who approaches women from the back and puts his hand up their skirts and tried to penetrate them digitally.
One suggestion - don't wear skirts.

Lawmakers Defend Earmarks in Spending Bill
Critics of earmarks have put lawmakers, Republican and Democratic alike, on serious defense.
"...The press has been having a field day with many of the earmarks, so much so that the sponsoring lawmakers felt the need to spend much of Wednesday defending their projects on the Senate floor.
It doesn't help that many of the pet projects sound ridiculous on their face: swine odor research, tattoo removal, the "Mormon cricket," the Polynesian Voyaging Society of Honolulu, the American Lighthouse Foundation."

For those who want to defend a person who is no longer here---why is it so important that you do so, when most others here really don't care?
If defense of that individual is so vital to your well-being why not just go where you & he can converse?

On Monday, I was over at a friend of mine's apartment helping her set up her "Digital TV Converter," which basically means she needs to make her below-the-poverty-line rabbit ears make sense in the 21st Century world. Because she can't afford cable.
All she gives a shit about is the ability to tune to one channel for only 30 minutes each and every day to get the most important news. She doesn't care about anything else. She doesn't even watch the Orlando Magic.
Anyway, the program that happened to be on as we tuned in her set in the middle of the afternoon was the old 1960s soap opera "One Life To Live." And I said "I can't believe that stupid soap opera is still on TV." To which, she said, "What else is new?"
I'd love to get her take on Trailmix drama. Probably wouldn't even register. Get some perspective, computer people.

But, when you say "give people a clean slate and let bygones be bygones.", then you're contradicting yourself. Because you admitted this isn't our house. It belongs to someone else. And the rules are his to make. What we think about them doesn't matter. We just need to follow them.

There were a lot of accusations about the stimulus bill. Like the clean coal plant. But Democrats went to a lot of trouble to make sure the money wasn't earmarked for any one particular project.
Like good old Jindal when he repeated the Las Vegas meme. Though if you've ever driven up I-15 on a Friday night you know it's packed.

The Republicans marginalized to southern religious whack jobs. I guess Democrats will be the center left party and maybe the other party in the two party system will be the Greens. The Libertarians many more whacky people and won't find support outside of very geeky college boys and Tucker Carlson.

Actually, I tend to libertarian much more than I do to liberal. Though I vote moderate, picking which ever party seems least dangerous.
The one thing that really bothers me about both liberals and conservatives is that they want to tell me how to live. I haven't met a politician that is that smart.
Ron Paul had a large following all over the country. If you read his papers he was pretty understanding of what could and couldn't be implemented.
The Democrats will get arrogant and fail again. Republicans have more inertia than any other party, and have set up rules with the Democrats to make it almost impossible for any other party to participate.
This reminds me of Demerel and Ecevet in Turkey, back and forth without much ever getting done.

Oh, I mentioned the other night that Ron Paul won't get elected, he's not running again. I believe his wife has been ill too.
But his followers put together a large organization, which shows the interest people have in getting government out of their lives. We're well on our way to having the majority of the American people working for government and not private enterprise.
There's a large email list and a lot of interest, the right person would pick up libertarians, moderates, and old style fiscal Republicans. So there are a few more people than Tucker and a few boys still living at home.
I rarely paint with a broad brush. Keeps me out of trouble.

"Traditionally, an agent provocateur (plural: agents provocateurs, French for "inciting agent") is a person employed by the police or other entity to act undercover to entice or provoke another person to commit an illegal act. More generally, the term may refer to a person or group that seeks to discredit or harm another by provoking them to commit a wrong or rash action."

CT,
I have three sources.
As I said, one was another writer who had been a high end domme for many years.
The other source was something that turned up when one of the nurses who were writing short memoirs for a collection mentioned it... and it became something others brought up, some from their own experience, others from stories I had heard, in good humor, all attributing it to working for doctors.
The other was from Larry's unpublished study. As I said, Larry was a major writer on the psychology of sexuality and sexual addiction.
That's all there is to say.

File this under "Be all you can be -- read!"
I did not say "The majority of nurses are dominatrices."
The study said that the majority of dominatrices were nurses.
Dommes are a wee tiny demographic even when NOT compared to nurses.
Please also read that I was EDITING A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS by oncological nurses (who asked me to do that) about their lives --
About what drew them to the profession --
About what they have had to endure in it --
About what gratifies them --
About what damages them or even breaks their hearts --
About the difficulty of being more knowledgeable in many areas than many doctors are.
Which is what led to the anecdotes I described.
I put together the first draft of the book. It is now with a real editor at a publishing house.
I think it will be a damn good read when she's done with it.
The nurses are proud of it because of its passion and its honesty. A lot of the material was truly painful for enough of them.
And those anecdotes were just a great source of comic and emotional release for them.
Back to the real world.

Rightly or wrongly, fairly or unfairly, you're not welcome here, although I'll bet you doughnuts to dollars if you made a good-faith effort to rectify the situation amiably, you could. I wouldn't have banned you, but this isn't my blog. Apologize and conform, or find a place that will your accept behavior as it is, such as your own blog you are allowed to link here every day, for instance. I chose the former option; there's a lot of stuff I would like to say but don't for the general welfare of the community, but I don't cry like a baby that my 1st amendment rights are being violated. Give it a rest already.

Way to bring up an argument form 6 months ago, UB. I had noticed you were trying to broach the topic indirectly over the last few days, but avoided it due to a reluctance to dwell in the past. If your memory serves, as mine does, then you would remember me being chided by Mr. Crawford himself for it, and also by xrep and a few others.
Believe it or not, I'm a better man than I was then, but still not too good, because if I apologized for what I said, I take it back. Let it be on record, "I, champ, once implied (although did not directly say) UB was a whore, and offer no apologies for it. May I be judged by any and all accordingly." There, now you can move on with your life.

Fifty-four years on this earth has taught me a valuable lesson that I would like to share.
Although you may feel wronged or slighted, it is best to take leave of your resentments. They are harmful to those who possess them and cannot be rectified by those whom they are directed. Bitterness is a thief.
Humankind’s problems are too numerous and our time is too short for such futility.

Sean Hannity keeps saying he thinks it is "embarassing" that Hillary is over in China "begging" them to buy our bonds. Well guess what jack ass - the US dollar is still strong. And falling American prices only make it a more attractive investment.
What the hell was he saying when Bush was over in Saudi Arabia asking them to keep oil prices down.

Maybe you've got to"beg" with American media predicting doom. Not great promo and whjatmakes you think the dollar will stay strong? The market sure is now predicting a Grand Recession.

The salaries of the upper middle class have been rising greatly the last 8 years. And the salaries for the ultra-rich have went off the charts.
Do you think wages for truck drivers, waitresses and teachers have increased at the same rate?
No.
And it is basic economics that if you concentrate wealth into a small (but powerful) minority - then there are less people to spend it.

I read Craig's updated comment and here in lies the problem. Today's board wasn't about everyone breaking the rules. It was about specific people breaking the rules, and others reacting. And it couldn't be more clear. If I really had the motivation, I could write a long post breaking it all down.
Now, I don't care if there's any type of sanction for breaking the rules today, but it becomes a bit disingenuous when later, someone who says something that offends, and gets punished specifically. Either lay down the law from the start, equally and fairly, or understand that the divide I talked about in my first comment will remain. And those who are not favored on this blog will be blamed for not only their words, but for their presence here. And that's inherently unfair.

I don't believe in equality that is achieved through government redistribution of wealth. Equality before the law is hardly the same as equity in the market place. Business generates jobs. Doctors wages have gone up because there is a greater demand for doctor's services. With Detroit reeling away from their sweet salary packages, many would love to make $1500 a week driving rigs. And immigration reform would add new pressure to wage growth.
Increase salaries for teachers as education results have gone down?
And here is something you might want to consider. The kinds of new regulatory organs Obama wishes to create may very well go against States Rights. In the regulatory push thats coming, there is great potential to further erode Constitutional checks and balances far more than those the Left claimed Bush forever changed.
See how the courts are tyring to pre-empt this political trend by reasserting the Constitution's enumeration of State's Rights.....
See Wyeth..

The Democrats made the economy Obama's hammer. Boy did he use it, but a few months later he enjoyed Valentine's Day before signing the bill. During the campaign, I cautioned against this deadly drum beat. Expectations count a great deal. The Democrats have compared now to the Great Depression. Republicans have only mentioned a Great Recession along with CNN and FOX to emphasize that a poor Stimulus Plan could drag out recovery from a predictable recession into the Great Recession.
Just an opinion.....

What's obscene about executive salaries is the sense of entitlement the CEOs exhibit. These people, in virtually all cases, are nothing more than employees of the companies where they work.
They bear none of the risk that entrepreneurs and other business owners carry with them 24-hours a day.
When the 'entitled' CEOs' businesses go belly-up, they merely take their golden parachutes and move on to the next set of corporate victims leaving the wiped-out shareholders with nothing.
Not all CEOs are like that. An example would be Bill Gates who took nothing more than a token salary during his years at Microsoft. Instead he grew the business and lived, quite well, off the appreciation of his shares of Microsoft stock.

Here's my baking hint for today.
In things like cakes and brownies, when the recipe or box calls for cooking oil, substitute the contents of one of those small single-serving containers of applesauce.
Unflavored applesauce works best. And, reduce the amount of other liquids to compensate for the added moisture content of the applesauce as compared with the cooking oil. No other adjustments are required.
As always, check for doneness by sticking a clean round toothpick in the center of the item being baked. If, when you remove it, it is essentially dry and free of cake batter adhering to it, then it's done.

Why I Miss Bill Clinton
" Clinton, for all his appetites and excesses, was a cautious, centrist sort of Democrat. He had innumerable ideas for things the government could do, but most were small and fairly innocuous. He was willing to go along with Republicans on some of their sound ideas -- such as balancing the budget, reforming the welfare system and expanding foreign trade.
He focused on making government better, not making it bigger. He didn't greatly enlarge Washington's role in our lives. He proclaimed -- or conceded -- that the "era of big government is over."

You know Flatus, I think I've gotten to the point where I can easily read around it. I enjoyed the company of a few here last night, and was laughing so hard at the things Lard said. I think the one rule that Craig asked us to follow about not responding to the offenders is the most important, imo. If we do that one thing, I think things will go smoothly. From Wiki
Tongue-in-cheek is a term used to refer to humor in which a statement, or an entire fictional work, is not meant to be taken seriously, but its lack of seriousness is subtle. The origin of its usage comes from when Spanish minstrels would perform for various dukes in the 18th century; these dukes would silently chastise the silliness of the minstrel's performances by placing their tongue firmly to the side of their cheek.

More tongue in cheek from Wiki:
"Several Internet websites —such as BT's Connected Earth[8]— assert that Kevin Mackenzie proposed -) as a joke-marker in April 1979, on the MsgGroup ARPANET mailing list. The idea was to indicate tongue-in-cheek — the hyphen represented a tongue, not a nose. Others used :-) for tongue-in-cheek, with the colon representing teeth. Also used was -:) to indicate sticking out your tongue, in derision or anger. Although similar to a sideways smiling face, the intended interpretation was different and this does not appear to have inspired the later smileys."
As a paleoblogger, I'll just use :-)

thanks, Chloe. It is not so much the fight against the cancer as it is the ride through the health care system...I can best describe the entire experience as such...
when we learned he had cancer, the process took over...I actually had the feeling I did as child when buckling into the seat of a roller coaster...when the chain link grabs the car and heads uphill for the ride of your life...really weird experience for us...living with the tumor...it is everywhere...when we go to bed at night, it is with us, when we eat, when he pees...just want it to be gone.

Good morning all -- Heckuva storm passed through last night. A bright and sunny day here on the Trail.
There was some elected GOP guy on MSNBC just now ranting and raving about how Health Care is a "privilege." Huh? When questioned by the anchor as to what he meant -- he reasserted that health care is a "privilege" not a "right" because "most people decline it." Does this man live in the real world? Does he not know about all the people who are without health insurance due to pre-existing conditions? Or for whom health insurance is simply unaffordable?
We so need universal health care -- it is a problem that will keep the US from being truly competitive.

I tend to use :-) to indicate I am being friendly, epescially if it is vigorous debate.
I use ;-) to say I'm joking around
;-P when I'm being totally absurd.
To further confuse things I often use none of them so just because I am engaged in vigorous debate and don't :-) doesn't mean I'm mad.

Thanks Pogo -- The Mexican recipes inspired me to post the fish taco recipe. We just don't have the fish tacos here on the East Coast like they have in SoCal -- or even Baja. We could -- it's not that hard to find ingredients -- but even my favorite Mex rest around here does an icky job of fish tacos. Maybe the taste is never the same as after a night of pounding cervezas at Houssong's and grabbing as many tacos as you can eat for $2 from the outdoor taco stand.
I wish I was having Mexican lunch today -- in Mexico.

Feinstein leads Dem pack in governor's race
John Wildermuth, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, March 5, 2009
Sen. Dianne Feinstein is the top Democratic choice for governor next year, a new Field Poll of California voters shows, but Antonio Villaraigosa, the newly re-elected mayor of Los Angeles, is a surprisingly strong contender if the senator stays in Washington.
Attorney General Jerry Brown, a former two-term governor, takes the top spot if Feinstein is out of the race but holds only a 26 percent to 22 percent lead over Villaraigosa, who easily won a second four-year term as mayor Tuesday.
On the Republican side of the race to replace termed-out Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman holds a 21 percent to 18 percent edge over former Silicon Valley Rep. Tom Campbell, and Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner runs third with 7 percent. A whopping 54 percent of GOP voters remain undecided

I do have to laugh at what those MX recipes made me recall. When we go to Cancun our first trip away from the hotel is always to Wal-Mart for groceries and , ummm, beverages. While we're there we eat in the W-M cafeteria in the back of the store. There's a little cart there that serves tacos al pastore - and they are invariably the best "authentic" mexican food we eat while we're in MX. Plus, they cost just 24 pesos (2-3 bucks depending on the exchange rate) for 3 of them. And we've never seen another American eating there.

Thanks for the recipe, Ms Divaliscious. I like Vera Cruz cuisine. Milk solids make me so sick that I can't sleep. It also makes Sweetie sinusy, so the usual cheese-filled North Mexican fare is out of the question. When making North Mexican stuff at home, I just 1. hold the cheese, or 2. use soy or rice cheese, or 3. put in Mori-Nu xtra firm tofu.

An interesting read, but humongously long. I only ran across it because others were discussing Mexico this morning.
Mexico’s Other Border
For many immigrants heading north, the first dangerous crossing is not the one into the U.S. It’s southern Mexico where the peril begins.
"The word “porous” is poroso in Spanish, and you hear it from both Mexicans and Americans who study Mexico’s southern border and its increasingly complicated relationship to the United States. The U.S. wants the border made less poroso even as American employers keep demanding cheap labor and American drug users keep demanding smuggled cocaine. The drug routes and the migrant routes overlap only occasionally; organized drug smugglers prefer sea or air for most major cross-border transport. But the simplicity with which people and goods pass illegally across this border is obvious to anyone who spends time here."

Lime, cilantro, & fish based cuisine of the Atlantic Coast is an entirely different matter.
There is a hole-in-the-wall 'Baja Grill' restaurant in Roseville MN that has offered decent fish tacos for ages - w/o cheese if you like. There once was a fine Vera Cruz style restaurant on Selby Avenue in St. Paul called La Corvina, that produced heavenly meals. The wait staff wasn't up to the quality of the chef, which I think is why it closed. Order a dish w/o cheese and she'd forget to write it down. Complain, and she'd take it into the kitchen and scrape a little off. Too bad.

Just the lead in to the Ensenada Fish Tacos brought back memories of the city, Hussongs, and the tacos. I had never had fish tacos before going there and had to be talked into the first one. After that I became a life time addict.
I used to go there often in the 70s before it became a cruise stop. Even then you didn't go into Hussongs on the weekend. During the week it was wonderful with all the expats gathering to play board games, read and chat. I doubt it is still there after more than 30 years, but one of the caricatures on the wall was me.

MN's governot, "Potholes Aplenty," vetoes increases in the minimum wage passed by the House & Senate. Apparently, making $8/hr. is outrageously high, and will bust the MN corps with big payrolls, like 3M, BNSF, NWA, the NFL Vikings, the MLB Twins, the NHL wilt, the NBA timmy pups, Cleveland Cliffs, Hormel, General Mills, Pillsbury, and the Mayo Clinic. You can see his point, surely.
Btw, "Potholes" is proud to present a brand new I35W bridge, and says the last one wasn't HIS fault. We will pay for this new bridge by foregoing maintenance on all sections of Interstates that don't run through the suburbs far as long as Potholes is our governot.

OSH, do I hear you on the grass obsession or what? With 1.8 acres of way too fertile ground, I spend way too much of the pleasant months keeping it short enough to cut - and I spend about half the time my friends with much smaller yards do. My next door neighbor who has about 200 square feet of grass in his back yard - and for him it's 200 square feet too much - thinks I'm nuts when I put stuff on it that keeps the tall weeds beat back - he thinks I'm trying to make grass grow because it says turf builder on the bag when I'm actually just trying to make tall weeds die so I don't have to cut it as often - I kinda like the clover and can tolerate the dandelions, al though Mrs. P hates dandelions. Must come from growing up in the Cleveland 'burbs instead of the angry heat of the Birmingham fringes. She wants a lawn - I'm happy with a yard.

I have a little postage stamp of a yard where there is grass and weeds in the spring , it burns out in the heat of summer then comes back in Sept. I have a business next to my house and know it would look more neat and tidy green, but I care more about our Earth and her water than everyones' sensibilities. Would like to get rid of the grubs though, milky white spore just never gets high enough in my discretionary money priorities. That dang stuff is expensive!

Bob, got them - at least in one bed - about 8x80 - plus a couple of other plots here and there. Front yard gets just about enough sun to keep grass alive, back gets full sun - north 40 is about half/half, and the dark half barely sustains grass growth. And if it takes effort, forget it - my life isn't at all built around making my lawn look good for the neighbors. Except for the very early summer when the cool, damp conditions make grass grow fast enough to hear, I get by with about an hour and a half every ten or so days. And this year, LP is old enough to cut the grass - good for me, good for him, life is good.
Mrs. P would never go the wildflower instead of grass route - it's what they do in the medians around here and she says they look like hell. I do put them here and there, but it's a lot of property to try and do much with - if you're a lazy shit like me who'd rather do things like ride a bike or play golf, that is. She's more of a lawn and shrubs type and I'm more of a yard and bushes type.

pogo, get a goat or go to one of these rent-a-sheep places (they rent out the critters to take care of kudzu). possible bonus on the goat is feta cheese... and alternate transportation when we run out of oil.

xr, don't get too excited about puffy and the other criminals testifying before congress. It's only the blanket assertion of executive privilege to preclude even showing up that has been foregone. There are still the claims of attorney-client privilege (myers), qualified "executive advice" immunity and the good old 5th amendment privilege against self-incrimination. Bet that a deal has been or will be struck so that IF they testify to anything of substance, it will be under a use privilege or privilege against prosecution at all agreement with Congress and the DoJ, leaving us with a somewhat unsatisfying "See, they were criminals" smirk but no prosecution or jail time for the crimes they committed.

Pogo,
Just minutes ago near the banks of the Cahaba River, my daugther noted, "Kudzu's growing." Two inches of March snow woke it up.

Ivy, I used to teach canoeing on the Cahaba for UAB with a guy named John Foshee. Seen kudzu there for a fact. My sister used to live out in Pinson Valley, and to get to her house I had to drive past a field with an abandoned barn on it - there was a power pole and a half dozen trees next to it . The field was maybe 100 acres, 10 of which, including the barn, trees and power pole (with wires) were covered with kudzu. It's amazing stuff. I always contended that if you really want to get into biological warfare, you would crossbreed kudzu and poison ivy and airdrop the seeds over you enemy's lands. And I always suspected that you could propogate the stuff by putting it in a blender and pouring what came out on the ground. Me, I prefer honeysuckle.

TOP TEN WAYS TO BE A BETTER COMMENTER
Craig that is really a very sensible approach. But is it feasible.
Contribute new information to the discussion.
OK, but does new mean correct and can the person substantiate his post without subcoming to name calling?
Nobody likes a know-it-all.
Are we talking about the presenter, or the responder?
Be careful about your tone.
That one is tricky, since email is all about conjecture.
It really depends on how one wants to decipher your comments.
Own your comment.
That would be refreshing.
Be succinct.
Use Twitter to compose your post.
Cite your sources with links or inline quoting.
But not more than 3, and make sure your sources are from a reliable PC source of your choosing.
Be clear about the subject or person you're addressing.
Another point which gets over looked more times than not.
Be courteous.
But only if you agree with the point. If the person is posting an opinion in direct opposition to yours than you can call them a fascist, dictator, baby killer, racist, Neanderthal, homophobe, sexist, etc..
Do not feed the trolls.
This is on the same order as trying to distinguish which eel belongs to whom in a slither pile of eels. One person's "Troll" is another person's hero. Trolls have even been known to speak the truth.
Most of all, have fun.
As your mother may have told you, "Play nice, don't throw sticks or stones."
Posted by: TruthinReality | March 5, 2009 3:01 PM
Truth, I seriously doubt that Craig is under any illusion that something approaching compliance with those guidelines will be achieved so long as like people comment here. He has been around the block more than once and is a pretty smart guy. Hey, he went to law school and everything. I kinda like the new guidelines - if nothing else, they can remind us of what the rules of civilized society (should) look like. Was it chloe sho said that? Thangs are calm her during the day for the most part, but when the sun starts to set, something happens. Maybe the vampires wake up. Anywho, let's see how things go here. With over 500 comments in the last 22 hours, no server meltdowns yet, and a few cross words and apologies it looks to me like things are going well enough.

"Must come from growing up in the Cleveland 'burbs instead of the angry heat of the Birmingham fringes. She wants a lawn - I'm happy with a yard."
Pogo, I agree with your missus, Stinky's winter and springtime rituals involve searching for and extracting every nascent weed in our yard. And, as you know, she was born in the Deep South.
The weed control companies hate her for her efforts. When they spray, they do nothing beyond killing everything expecting people to believe that is the best that can be done. Likewise with the landscaping people who make people believe that every trimmed blade of grass must be vacuumed from the property and whisked away to God knows where.
Our annuals self-seed from year-to-year, and our veggies are all grown from seed. Everything we grow, we convert into mulch when the harvest is finished.
Our yard makes people like Pogo crazy because it's the yard that people like Mrs P use as exemplars during their 'counseling' sessions.
So, Pogo, man up and do as she says. :))

Yes the harmless little acquarium plant when unleased went crazy. According to local legend someone poor fool dumped their aquarium in the river, down the toilet who knows but it ended up in the local waterways. In all likely hood more than one dumper, but local story tellers like the idea of one dumper ---makes the spread much more dramatic.

Flatus, when I retire, maybe. Until then, if turf builder, sheet mulching and cutting the grass (or leaves in the fall) every 10 days doesn't satisfy her, she can hire a lawn service. I have a lawn a couple of houses away that gets held up to me all too frequently. But JJ spends more time on his John Deere (for a 1/4 acre lawn more or less) than anyone should. No, your yard wouldn't make me crazy - I've manned up and learned to ignore the comments about yards like yours.

I saw a flick about kudzu and goats on RFD-TV. I think it was produced by the Univ of Kentucky extension institute. They have been trying several different approaches.
So far, the bottom line seems to be that goats can't keep up with the noxious weed. And, that the weed itself doesn't provide complete nutrition.
So, maybe if we plant it along the Rio Grande...

And here's what we have to look forward to on Friday....
Why a Lousy Jobs Report Could Actually Help Stocks
Investors have been searching for that vital capitulation point where complete despair sets in and stocks form a true bottom. A higher-than-expected jobless rate could set the stage for that and spark a long-overdue rally in what most agree is a highly oversold market.
"Maybe that could finally raise some alarm bells and we get a big down, 300 to 400 points at the open," says Chip Hanlon, president of Delta Global Advisors in Huntington Beach, Calif. "It sounds gruesome, but I think that might finally be the type of capitulation that they've overreacted to bad news. That might finally wash out the last few sellers and signal that at least investors are paying attention."

At least sell her on the idea of water conservation. Long gass conserves water, stays healthier, resists weeds and saves money. Then there is always the possibility of fake grass that never needs to be mowed at all.

LL, after the past year, I'd be pretty reluctant to take anything that's said on CNBC as having any validity. So now they think a bad jobs report might cause a rise in the market? They could be right, or they could be as wrong as they've been on 9 out of every 10 days for the past year and a half. Like Jon Stewart said, he could have a million bucks today if he'd followed CNBC's advice - provided he had started out with $100 million.

Pogo...that Stewart rant was brilliant, wasn't?
Up to now, I've been pretty philosophical about the stock market dive -- figuring that the 30-40 percent hit I've taken in my 401(k) will come back on the upside if I just give it time and don't touch the control rods. But I'm extra touchy right now because I'm wanting to roll it over into an IRA at some point soon and I don't want to lose out on any of that upside by hitting the wrong control rod and betting on the wrong fund, yada, yada...
I'm trying to convince myself that switching it over doesn't amount to writing off the loss I've already taken.

jamie, she's plenty happy with long grass as long as it's fairly even and uniform more or less - and I like it because the golfers lose their sliced balls in it and every ball I find when I cut the grass is one I don't have to buy for LP. And water conservation is one thing she never worries about since we never water the grass - it's against my religion.

chloe - grinning. I really do try.
LL, yes, Stewart's rant was positively inspired. I chuckle a bit about the financial advice people are getting - and believing. We've got a CFO here who assiduously avoids giving advice, right up until he tells you what he woudl do "if he were in your position." He's as full of shit as a Christmas goose. I guess he's right about investing for the long term, taking your goals into account, and all sorts of other financial cliches he utters given half a minute. Of course if one of your goals is to actually have money in your retirement accounts when you retire, his nonadvice lately doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. To me 3% to 11% looks a lot better than -40%, but then I never took finance or investment courses. I wonder, does "growth fund" really intend to include 40% losses in a year?

A lot of the public pension funds are underfunded in mega-amounts because they over estimated the rate if return on investments by quite a lot. The contribution percentage will have to be upped a lot especially since there are going to less employees paying.

The one thing I've beeen using that has ocean roots is Greensand for good fruit production.

Yep,
There is a 5 1/2" auger in the center pipe, the wind turns it. It lifts the compost from the bottom of the cone to the top of the pile. It has a set of baffles that get air to all of the pile, via a blower taking air from the greenhouse. The exhaust gases go into the greenhouse, CO2 & Ammonia .......... When the compost is finished, there a door that can be closed the auger lifts the stuff into that angled pipe, it empties onto the potting bench.

You can have a civil discussion with anyone as long as the purpose is talk about a difference of opinion. When the purpose of one or the other of the parties is to start a fight, then there is no discussion. At that point, the most viable stand to take is to ignore the provocation completely,

Hi Solar
Yes! I don't think its that hard.I think its easier if we just realize we change few minds. Its important to get your thoughts and opinions out there in the hopes of learning something.Of course its important that the one your debating respects you and allows for differences. Its always a risk.....

Good evening everyone -- I really enjoyed reading back through the comments --- and glad I was able to spark some Mexico memories.
Jamie -- I bet your character is still on the wall at Houssong's. The only thing that's really changed in the last 30 years is the stickers on the windows were taken down in observance of the new millenium.
Pogo -- Once I moved East, Cancun became my new Mexico destination. I have not been there in 10 years, but before that I went down at least once a year. I just loved it. There wasn't a WalMart there -- a Francisco Market filled all of our need for beverage purchases. One of the best times of my life was spent snorkeling in Xcaret on Christmas Day. Xcaret was pretty primitive back then -- only a tiki shack that rented snorkeling equipment and sold Pepsi 0-- but the best snorkeling ever.
mqw - People have been doing a reverse migration to Mexico for years and years. Ensenada was mostly ex-pats. Same with Rosarita Beach. In fact, a former Clintonista friend is now an expat in Rosarita. We were worried about her when we heard about the murders in TJ, but she reports that Rosarita is perfectly safe and she loves living down there.

Hi Everyone.. just wanted to say Jon Stewart was SO dead-on last night... why does it take a 'fake' news show to come up with real news? I can't post a link to the full episode (because of those nasty cross-border network licensing issues) but if you go to http://www.thedailyshow.com/ i think you can access full episodes. Jamie ,,,agreed ,,,read my warnings from last night, I said ignore,,,ignore,,ignore
I belong to a few FTA sites, they only have one rule,,,,no flaming other members,,,,and it is up to the owner of that site to send the offender to jail time,,,for a period of time,,,no discussion is made by the others ...he just goes,,,for lets say two weeks ,and he is then let out of jail,,,and no discussion, when he returns there is no one rehashing old bs,,,takes away from what we are there for,,if he breaks that one rule 3 times he is not allowed there anymore,,,now the reason that he will or won't break the flaming rule is that there is something that he wants out of that groups thinking,,,or enjoys the people there,,they all ignore them if they come back,,,,and eventually they go away and never return. There was another blog allowed here at TM,,and that created the illusion of parity for that other blog I think,,and there is where I see where the problem began, so now,,,you are right ,,,,you have to ignore him. If any one defends him ignore that also,,,ignore direct questions,,,so I guess there are two things that I will do,,,,,is be Civil,,,and ignore, hope that is my last word on this,,Oh, and we n ever defend the one doing the flaming,,,friend or not, like I don't agree with what he/she said,but,he/she is a good person, smart funny. wrong is wrong,,,hardly ever anyonesever in FTA jail ,,,the owner Moderator is the first and last word,,, thanks
Antonio,,,como estas,,,,

When we weren't on the rancho about 8 miles north of Ensenada, we were either in Hussongs or on Robert Coogan's boat out in the harbor.
For the babies on the blog, Robert was the less famous child star brother of child star Jackie Coogan in the 1930s. Robert acted into the 1960s off and on and then retired on his boat and became a star of great cuisine in a galley and writing for boating magazines. He passed away in 1978.

The man some have dubbed 'Guitar Hero" brought his guitar to work last night and practiced during break. It gave the lunchroom a "James Taylor" kind of feel. I don't know if any of you saw it last night, but PBS aired a concert special of trumpeter Chris Botti and friends last night. Chris had various artists perform with him last night. Steven Tyler singing "Smile", Katherine McPhee singing "I've Got You Under My Skin", Yo Yo Ma, Josh Groban etc... performing as well as John Mayer who was dressed in a suit and singing some standard that I didn't quite know, but I was very impressed by his singing. The DVD comes out on March 31st.

Let me know if you want some, I get a contractor's discount of 20% and then can ship in a flat rate priority box which saves quite a bit depending on distance. Ooops, just Ifound their website- if their shipping is high would be still willing to ship to you.

It's hard to remember all these rules. I've worked my way down to rule number nine. I thinking of trying to learn just one a day, to make sure I have them in my long term memory.
Rule number 9
"Do not feed the trolls. Be assured that your host will take action against chat bullies as soon as possible."

Wee Small Hours was one of his most successful albums coming out in 1955. His divorce from Ava Gardner in 1957 probably had more to do with his mood than anything else. Every song on it is about lost love.
Posted by: Jamie
| March 5, 2009 8:53 PM
Ill tell you why Tony
If you do have one,,that is the good thing,,,,,what you should do with your new line also,,is to install a T perferated drain PVC and some line to the one that connects to the city one,,,and hook up a sump pump to that,,this will help when it gets very wet out side,,but nothing will help if the city sewers are over whelmed,,,then you can use that new sump to direct the water that is backing up into the new one that you just installed,,,,,the bad thing is that you will need to keep it running by having a back up system for your pump,,,generator type of thing,,,,,,,RR will run over and hand carry hers so you can use it HA :-j
I like Chole's :-j the most ,,,not cos she is Chloe ,,but,,,ok thats why cos she is Chloe,,,so what sue me :-j,,,,,and of course I also like SEAS round firm ass too!!! SI Senorita from the Sea. I am not sorry and the Devil made me say that,,,now back to good Solar.

I've always liked that song. For some reason, songs about lost love fare well. Maybe it's because they're easier to relate to. In sad news, my niece Courtney has a friend Adam. Both my niece and Adam have Downs Syndrome. Adam's Mom has been battling cancer. She is now at the Hospice House. They took Adam to say his goodbyes to her. My sister doesn't think Adam is quite sure of what is going on right now.

Corey,
I love sad songs. Whenever you feel bad, it sometimes helps to just wallow in it. You can get to a point pretty fast where you just have to laugh at the situation and yourself.
My two favorite songs on the album is Hoagy Carmichael's "I Get Along With Out You Very Well" and
Rogers and Hart's "It Never Entered My Mind"

With U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announcing last week that the federal government will end raids on marijuana dispensaries in California and other states with medical marijuana laws, it is clear that the tide is turning. Fact regarding marijuana is finally overcoming fiction.
There may be disagreements about what direction to take, but it is clear to everyone involved that our current approach is not working. Regulation allows common-sense controls and takes the marijuana industry out of the hands of unregulated criminals.
As a member of the state Assembly, I believe we must acknowledge reality and bring innovative solutions to the issue of marijuana, not simply wait for the federal government. This is how change happens. Californians lead rather than follow, and we can set an example for the nation as we did on medical marijuana by passing AB390.
Tom Ammiano is an Assembly member from San Francisco.

I see all the recipes in the cook book have exspensive stuff.
How about a bit of down home cheap eatin'
Road kill chili,
for hippies,
not vegitarian hippies
A pound of fresh ground road kill, or substitute a 1 lb of cheap ground turkey
3 table spoons or more depending on how spicy you want it of chili powder.
1 teaspoon of cumin
1/2 onion chopped
2 or3 cloves of garlic, mashed in one of those mashers.
1/2 bell pepper chopped
1 can of tomatoes and chilis, kind of like the Rotel ones but look for cheaper ones.
some v8 juice for a little liquid, if you have an open bottle in the fridg. like I did tonight.
or a small can of tomato sauce and water
Combine the meat spices onion and bell pepper. Cook until meat is almost done make sure the meat is crumbly. Add tomatoes and liquid bring to a boil then turn down the heat and simmer.
stir it once it a while but then you know that or soon will learn.
Put 2 cups of brown rice on to cook according to directions on the package.
Serve the chili in a soupbowl over a 1/2 cup of the brown rice. you could have more rice if you like it.

Hi Solar
Nope I don't have a drain system around the house.I don't know of any houses here in Florida that do.My house is three years old,its cement block and built on a slab. The city requires so much water stay on the property but it puddles to much between the houses for my liking.I have eaves troughs all around the house and I also have city sewers. There are also no basements around that I know of. I always thought it was because the Atlantic is a few miles away and sea level and all.I did have french drains around my house in Michigan and it kept the basement dry...

There is an old man I know who survived the depression by selling roadkill sausage. As he said "you just never know, things are going fine, then you take a tern for the wurst."

In these uncertain economic times, Jack, It's important to consume only meat killed by American cars. We'll make America's highways into a 21st century "victory garden".

Tony,,,I used to have French Maids around the house too , but Judy just couldn't get used to them,,so they had to go,,,,OH French Drains,,,,they are good,,,,but you need to be on high ground for them to work properly,,,or do a lot of digging,,,,,I don't know what code is over by you ,,,but at the time of putting in those cement blocks,,,they could have put in the drain line,,,that is why you have puddles in between houses,,,it is probably down about 3-4 ft in your area (deep) and soft,,,digging a trench is not that hard and connecting to the city line,,wish I was there ,,we could do it together,,,if the city lets you,,,?????

Cheeses, champ. All that loud laughter woke me up, again.
May I plagerize the "only meat killed by American cars" line ? Or, are you going to force me to put 'champ' in the credit crawl ?

Just a technical wondering. Is there some way to automate the removal of obnoxious posts or does some intern have to read through our drivel. If it is the later Craig might want to be careful as there are some work conditions OSHA won't tolerate even for interns.
With that thought in my head I'm off to bed.

A little bedtime story before I retire:
"A hungry fox noticed a juicy bunch of grapes growing high on a grapevine. He leaped. He snapped. Drooling, he jumped to reach them, but try as he might, he could not obtain the tasty prize.
Disappointed by the fruitless efforts he'd made to get the grapes that day, he said, with a shrug, to comfort himself, 'Oh, they were probably sour anyway!' "

Goodnight, children.

anybody that wants to do something useful and
interesting can go to kiva.org and loan a small
amount of money to the person or persons
of your choice in a third world country .they pool
your money and others together to make small
business loans ' been a member since spring of
07' made 36 loans 32 paid back in full ' 4 still actively
being paid back' doesn't cost much because you
re-loan the same money over and over again. or
you can have it transferred back into your banking
account
