From Suicide to Sexy Puns, It's Charles in Charge

| | Comments (106)

When we last entered the Charles Grassley Zone, Iowa's nasally-voiced senator was apparently overtaken by a disorienting case of bonus envy, urging Japanese-style suicide for AIG executives on the run with federal bailout money.

Grassley's newest head-spinning zinger, which certainly lightened the mood of a somber Senate budget hearing, was an almost vaudevillian-sounding remark involving another senator's wife.

The official explanation is that in this clip (courtesy of C-SPAN's Video Library) Grassley was referring to an innocent compliment from North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad's wife, but the knowing grins and delayed laughter in the room indicate awareness of a possible hidden meaning, even if it was unintended:

  2. It seems to me that most politicians are a wee bit humor impaired. Whenever caught on camera telling tales for whatever reason, the "joke" usually gets a polite laugh at best. Of course, some are wildly funny.

Craig, of the politicians you have me, who are the most naturally funny.

  3. "trees took a serious hit"
It is supposed to be down around 27 tonight so the fruit trees in this area will probably take a hit. I haven't been out to see any orchards but my flowering cherry plums and pears have all been blooming for a week.
So the fruit trees are probably right at their most vulnerable.
    So no local grown peaches:-(

above is from the link re un vote that cbob posted earlier.
wonder if that "protection against acts of hatred and discrimination" includes protecting women from deprivation of education, stonings and mutilations based on religious tenets re sex? and does it include protecting ordinary folks going about their business in the market place, mosque or hotel restaurants from being blown to bits by suicide bombers on sacred missions recruited, sposored and sanctified by their religious leaders?

I think the banks are hanging on to those forclosed houses. Just from looking at the one next door and keeping an eye on the countrywide REO web sites. They haven't been adding any new houses to the site that I can tell. So they have either quit forclosing or they are keeping them off the market.

  90. One of those cool ping pong balls from the net bounced in the email yesterday.

    " Hi Bob,
I'm wondering if you can help me with a couple of questions about blue corn for a book I am working on. I am working on a thriller that involves GMO corn, and part of the one subplot has to do with pollen drift from a GMO field onto an heirloom patch where a small organic grower is growing some heirloom blue corn. Here's my question: are you aware of any varieties of heirloom blue corn that are especially rare and expensive, such that if it got contaminated it would be a terrible thing?
    Thanks for your help.
    Jon "

p.s. My day job is communications director at Weavers Way Co-op in Philly. We're doing a lot of cool things with urban ag, so I can definitely appreciate your project. We don't have enough land yet to take on corn, I don't think, but I will forward your blog to our farmer, Dave Zelov.

We're gonna have the biggest pepper patch between Santa Fe and San Antone.
The ones tonight were all yellow,
    Sweet Banana
    Canary Sweet Bell
And this big ass one from Italy. I can't even read the package.

Rod the pepper guy is bringing me a bunch of hot stuff. I'm trying to have 30 of everything we can seed. It'll fill my greenhouse up, I'll have to move everything in it now, out before it's all seeded.

  92. Red bell peppers are valuable. Low yield per plant.

    Cool,
from the web site it looks like a real going concern and they have passed beyond the feel good success stories to really doing things.

5 bucks says that dealership's checking account is tapped out, and those guys look like commissioned salesmen to me.

Really, Philly has a great tradition of this stuff. Back to Franklin. I think it's still pretty strong there. Lot's of lessons their for our market. It was great good luck.

  97. Flatus forgive me, in my own bad news, I over looked saying I'm sorry for your bad news.
Bad news is hanging in the trees like Spanish Moss.

  98. Peppers and their cousins, tomatoes, eggplants, tobacco, and nightshade, are odd critters.

I have 2 pals who loves peppers sweet or sour, mild, pungent or habanero. They like 'em all except for the green bells that make them ill.

I have another pal who loves tomato juice and sauce, tomato paste, and stewed tomatoes. But the raw tomato makes him sickerna dog.

I was a fanatic lover of peppers, the hotter the better. I ate jalapenos, chilies, serranos, and hot cherries (pickled, fried, or raw) like candy for 50 years. In the last 2-3 years I can only eat them for breakfast or lunch. If I have them in the afternoon or evening, they murder my sleep as effectively as Macbeth ever did.

I know a crowd of perfectly normal and delightful people who just won't eat eggplant. Eggplant is almost the favorite veg of Sweetie's for cooking. So, when we have these folks over, we have to make something boring, like cauliflower or green beans. Sweetie really shines when she grills eggplants (sigh).

  99. Oh yeah, I forgot. Last summer, I found and ate some nightshade that made me a little queasy. I've eaten the ripe berries for 40 years using them to brighten green salads, or just for munching by the handful. I never tasted bitter nightshade before, or nightshade that made me queasy.

Does anyone on the Trail have any nightshade lore ?

  100. I had to google "nightshade" to even know to what you were referring, xrep, and upon seeing an image of it, I recognized the berries as ones I was warned never to eat when I was a kid. I never did.

That's the best I can do on nightshade lore.
