Reduced to kissing Rush Limbaugh's ring and swooning over Sarah Palin, desperate American conservatives might need to go global for more star power.
President Barack Obama's London-Turkey express this week presents a few new faces who could make those Limbaugh ditto-heads drool.
Czech Prime Minister and European Union President Mirek Topolanek delighted conservatives with recent flare-ups against Obama, such as calling the President's economic stimulus plan a "road to Hell." But before putting the right-wing ideologue on their desktop wallpaper, conservatives should take note that Topolanek recently lost a vote of confidence in his own Parliament.
German chancellor Angela Merkel led the way among European heads of state resisting Obama's call to
stimulate their economies with government spending (instead of relying on the U.S. and others to lift all boats).
"I will not let anyone tell me that we must spend more money," Merkel said in a quote widely celebrated by American conservatives.
It's hard to imagine Rush Republicans becoming Topolanek Republicans or Merkel Republicans anytime soon, but this could be a week for European conservatives to boost the morale of their U.S. counterparts.

If there's one legislature that should be changed, it's the Delaware legislature. These are the folks that write much of the corporate governance rules. These are the folks that made shareholders mere neutered passengers on the corporate express.

Thanks, Jamie. Good link. I can never have too many h-feeders (that's what "they" tell me). That model probably has an ant trap too...I think my house was built on a giant ant hill. You can make your own nectar from 4 or 5 parts water + 1 part sugar. Don't need any food coloring either - the birds don't care. (~_^)

Interesting article re: perceived inequality between bank and auto bailouts:
"The money the government has been giving the automakers has been going not to shore up their capital base, but literally to pay their bills. In the absence of government aid, the automakers would have had to shut down their factories because of their inability to pay suppliers and workers. That’s not true of even the most troubled big banks, which are having no problem meeting their debt payments or paying their bills: the government’s aid has gone instead to replenish their capital and allow them to stay in regulatory compliance. That doesn’t mean the government’s aid was not essential, but it was different: the money the government gave G.M. has already gone out the door, while in the case of the banks it’s still, for the most part, sitting on their balance sheets (which is where it’s supposed to be)."

I don't know. I think that argument makes a lot of sense now - but we are completely out of the election cycle.
I think the GOP's future - at least in terms of electability - depends on the economy. And unfortunately, that means it is in their political, not patriotic, interest to see tough times continue through 2010.
Also, I think Palin will be the 2012 nominee if it looks like Obama will cruise to victory. She will be the GOP's "fall girl"...
This way they can say - look at us - we had a female nominee before the Dems. They also know that even if she can't win - she is crazy and abrasive enough to visciously tear down Obama even if she brings herself down in the process.
If Obama looks beatable - the GOP will look elsewhere.

warren, your 1:24 makes a lot of sense, although I'm not sure what saying "lLook at us - we had ..." means in 2016 if they have just another old white guy as their nominee. It's only the independents who they need to attract, and I could be wrong, but I don't think independent voters are as swayed by such a BS argument as that, particularly in light of the treatment Steele has received as the first AA RNC leader. As far as the economy being a huge factor - yeah, in all likelihood.

I've been gone this morning for my Remicade. So, I'm posting this as a follow-up to the last thread. For those who are interested, this was our very effective 'elimination' program in Vietnam:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Program
So far as the relative effective distance of .50 caliber rounds fired in Vietnam vs those in Afghanistan, I think there are a couple of really key points that, in my mind, make the shots in Vietnam much more difficult.
They are the thinness of the atmosphere at mountain-levels in Afghanistan as compared to Vietnam. Less density, less drag=greater effective range. And, the quality of the light in the arid Afghan mountains greatly aided the entire process. Despite that, the ranges are awesome.
FWIW, I've never touched a .50 cal rifle, but I have played with the .50 cal machine gun. So long as I didn't have to carry the damned things, it would be my weapon of choice. Fantastically accurate and awesome striking power. But, they were _really_ heavy. I was big so I would have to carry the receiver. Another guy carried two barrels and a few other guys carried ammunition. It really was a team effort. Made me appreciate trucks.

OK, brain fart. Hannity was early on a Giuliani supporter. After his candidacy fizzled, I'm not sure, but when it got down to McCain v. Romney, he indeed was a Romney supporter - even said he was going to vote for himin the NY primary. I seem to recall that Limbaugh was fairly inscrutable, focusing on trying to screw with the democratic primaries that were open to repug voters (Operation Chaos), but I did find one article analyzing his influence that said he seemed to support Romney. I do know that Limbaugh hated McCain. If these are right, I guess their influence ain't as great as they like to think. Tooo bad. :-)

About this thread,,,I completely agree with Warren,,,,that is how predictable this whole process has become,,,what a joke,,because of the two party system, and the $ it takes to run,we can predict with great accuracy who will be the people that will run for POTUS
Last thread,,,about hit squads,,,If the targets are war combatants,,,or terrorist,,,that have been chosen by the military,,and approved by others,,I can agree to have them,,,it would be nice to get the top Hamas leaders taken out by them IMO,,,but I have to agree with Don 1,,,,if we took all our $( aid) from them all,,if we did not support them with weapons,,,there would be a good chance for peace in the area,,,,I wonder how much it cost the U S tax payers to build WMD's for the Israeli's,,,,real $ that is besides the $ reported for aid...lets see how transparent Obams will be on this?!!

TiR - that is exactly right - in fact I believe several of us commented on that at the time - the fact that their self importance seemed a bit inflated considering the outcome of both the primaries and the election, that is. I wasn't saying they could do that - I was just saying that IF they could get enough rep voters to go along with that ...

Solar - being silly is great, and you made a personal record yesterday re the illegal horses. Keep it up.
Corey - do you really like Matthews?
As far as I'm concerned, public money takes public representation with it. If the corps want to fail, they know how to do it - they're half-way home. I don't think they know what they're doing, and expect help to keep on doing it. Forget that.
What I WOULD be worried about is government help with no government involvement.
If a company wants to be private, it should stay that way - no stocks, no citizen involvement, all private - and no governmental help. At all.
Gee, doesn't life suck? Wealth at the top depends on SOME money from the bottom - not fair, perhaps, but pretty close to a law of physics.

Ouch...you hit the nail squarely Craig. WTF is going on over at the Right Side of reality? Seems some Republican moderates are getting smacked. Moderates like Brooks deserve some slapping as we well remember his first kool aid drink. I gues some people should stay away from drinking. The conservative failure to organize a coherent message into a united leadership is astounding. Will it be can't get elected AND can't govern, or will they be smart and distill what exactly do Obma critics have in common?
Merkel, Topolanek and others I have quoted here would not be very comfortable chatting with Rush or even Beck. I can't say that many conservative leaders pass the "good centrist" criteria nor unfortunately do many liberals.
Some of what our EU buddies don't like stems from their disinterest in threat containment. I don't see what other life raft there is by common defense.
Some of the EU objections stems from the Liberally amplified claim we Americans are the cause of the world's problems and the Originator of recent economic storms. That does fit in nicely to DNC messaging. Unfortunately, our European friends include Obama in that mix. After all, who is Obama's Secretary of Treasury?
Another ground for objections is that EU leaders nuture statism in a tri-polar globally competitive world. They are feeling the heat. They distrust themselves and their CEOs are quite willing to sell to the Iranians despite their government's stated position. They don't rally well to a common cause unless storm troopers are knocking at their doors. They regard internal rivalry more than their own dangerous demographics. The Western half fails to understand the Eastern half. EU leaders not likely to appreciate the adoration of the masses for Obama, nor his call for unity. What's he selling after all?
Conservatives must distinguish between Obama critics and create a intellectual framework to carry their message. Without it, they can't capitalize on global doubts about Obama, nor forge a popular thrust to win back power. Right now the international barbs at Obama fail to be exploited by Republicans in disarray.

Number 2 on Obama's Best Hits List as of 10 am today.
Mehsud has never been directly linked to any attacks outside Pakistan, but attacks blamed on his network of fighters have widened in scope and ambition in recent years. The threat comes days after President Barack Obama warned that al-Qaida is actively planning attacks on the United States from secret havens in Pakistan.
Pakistan's former government and the CIA named Mehsud as the prime suspect behind the December 2007 killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Pakistani officials accuse him of harboring foreign fighters, including Central Asians linked to al-Qaida, and of training suicide bombers.
In his latest comments, Mehsud identified the White House as one of the targets in an interview with local Dewa Radio, a copy of which was obtained by the AP." AP

"In unveiling a new war strategy for Afghanistan last week, Obama urged Pakistanis to fight the "cancer" of extremism gripping their country and pledged more aid for them to do so. Still, his administration has resisted Pakistani pressure to halt the missile strikes, believed to be fired by unmanned CIA drones.
Doubts also remain about whether the powerful Pakistani military is committed to sidelining extremist groups it has used as proxies against India and Afghanistan.
Defense analyst Ayesha Siddiqa said Pakistan must evaluate its own links to some of these groups if it is to survive.
"We have to dig this out of our past," she said. "Unless we do that, unless we have a consensus on our strategy ... we aren't going to go anywhere." from above Yahoo link
This postion going on for months was what Bush arrived at before Obama threatened to bomb Pakistan. Obama called for Musharraf to resign so 1. moderates would finally go after militants and 2. a more liberal society could emerge. Now the cling to life as Omar and Meshud rule a growing Taliban/AQ menance. In fact, Musharraf had a better reign on military with more terrorists captured and even had less troops along the Indian border. Musharraf was isolating elements withing the military and attempts at assassinating him occured annually.
So there you go, now Obama's at least in the top five on Meshud's Best Hits List and we were just roasting Cheney alive.........
Maybe we should dig ourselves out of the past too and form a realistic consensus...

Obama's actions regarding GM and Chrysler don't scare me at all.
It was about time.
Government support always comes with conditions.
They had objectives to reach and both blew it off. They came back whining about how they tried and Obama didn't buy it. This sent a clear signal to all getting government help that we expect results.
lol
The novel concept of holding wall street big boys accountable scared the shit out of wall street yesterday. But I think they will have no problem dealing with the new situation.
And if you don't want to have the government in the middle of your business, go else where for funding.
It is not a free lunch any longer the adults are in charge.

Hey Texans --
I just heard from first-hand sources the bluebonnets are in full bloom!
State Flower of Texas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluebonnet
"Texans never tire of their special rite of spring — spotting the first bluebonnets by the side of the road. But most probably don't know the furious battle that led to the sprightly wildflower being named the state flower more than 100 years ago. It was a duel of the sexes with many male lawmakers favoring the hardy cactus or the business-friendly cotton boll as best representative of the state. But the ladies — specifically the National Society of Colonial Dames of America — wanted Lupinus subcarnosus, or buffalo clover as it was commonly called at the turn of the century.''

Jack - I couldn't agree more with your last post. Someone has to be in charge right now and at least he is an elected official, not someone who's been pulling strings behind the curtain for years.
If Wall Street thinks it's gonna get off easier, they are showing the same lack of foresight that got us all in trouble in the first place.
What got them their big money wasn't anything but their political pals being in power, and the ones not in power not having a clue. With the speed of communication today and the anger and fear, people are reacting much more vehemently than ever before. They'd all better be much more afraid than in the past. The secret's out , and the person with the power is an action figure.
I didn't vote for him happily and still wish it were Hillary, but I'm behind him and on his side - until the first uber-evangelical/pro-lifer is on scotus. Then I'm done - but I'm not gonna waste time anticipating it.
Gotta git to thuh liberry and git muh book.
My fear is that the drive for regulations will die out a little, especially if things get better fast. I want those damn regs in
place.

Bethy:
All the talk on the boob-tube is that the Europeans share your desire for regs - so there will certainly be pressure.
I also think the Democratic party will keep pushing the Administration for more regulation.
But - back to your conversation from late last night - I think Obama and his team will say yes we need regulation - and we can start working on them - but we need to wait till the economic "crisis" has been stablized before we can implement them.
(Also - the GOP may resist some regulation - especially if it comes in the form of "global regulation" enforced by any entity that is outside the US.)

pats....i told this before, but oncet (between 73 and 75) me and bumpsie were on the way back to the island after getting blitzed up in North Chuck and we stopped in at the last joint on the long ride home which happened to be an old roadhouse out on the savannah highway that was being re-born as a "Hee-Haw" franchise club.....Jr. Samples was the advertised star on the marquee, but Hank, Jr.'s tour bus was in the parking lot.....he had done a show downtown and had come out to the HeeHaw Club to do his bit for the guys.....too late for cover charge so we just walked in and there was young hank on the stage....he took turns on every instrument up there, piano, guitar, drums, steel, and guitar and then finally took a break and went to sit at a table with 3 of his friends or bandmates, whatever.......within half a tick his table was absolutely surrounded with folks yelling "Hank--Hank-- Hank".....he was looking around much like a cornered muskrat and finally stood up and started making his way to the bathroom.....the crowd parted and as he was walking toward the pee-house of august moon the crowd----went with him. All of them.....followed and shuffled sideways and whatnot until they all squeezed into the room with him and stood around yelling "Hank---Hank---Hank" while he stood at the urinal..........(yes, I went too--- there were so many, I figured what the heck.....but i was waaay in the back and didnt yell "Hank" at him) He finished and zipped up and he and the crowd shuffled and lurched back to his table until finally he had to go back on stage.......all i could figure was "holy shit.....that's just too damn famous......"
