It's not that unconfirmed gossip about Vice President Joe Biden's daughter leads to anything of public importance.
But for a bit of weekend sport -- and as a cautionary tale for future stories that do matter -- it's worth tracking how the gossip merchants ply their trumped-up stories into the mainstream.
Look at how the New York Daily News today takes the Biden story to the next unconfirmed level, following the New York Post's pure speculation (discussed in my last post).
Even though The Post hedged on whether it was really Biden's 27-year-old daughter, Ashley, in a video tape showing a woman ingesting cocaine, the Daily News in its second paragraph drops the qualifiers without adding any confirmations and breathlessly reports on "the shocking video of Ashley Biden." Although the Daily News later in the story The Daily News claims that the White House is in "turmoil."
UPDATE 11:00 PM EST__Later on Sunday the Daily News reported that the lawyer for the man who was trying to sell the video "ditched his client" and the newspaper then pulled back to describing the tape as showing Ashley "purportedly snorting cocaine." Still, the article presumes that Biden's daughter is the woman in the video, despite any confirmation of that claim.
In 24 hours, a story about a woman in a videotape who "resembles" Ashley (according to the NY Post) becomes "the shocking video of Ashley Biden" (Daily News). And yet neither paper even tries to prove it.

does it make any difference? All your posts and other bloggers protesting the sloppy journalism do is give MSM the excuse to salivate over the "controversy" then run the story anyway.

Yep, you're running the story. And then there are many stories leaked from the Left side like the Jewish Lobby sank Freeman, Bush was days away from bombing Iran or green lighting Israel. There were all the things said about Bush and company. There is the story Israel hit Sudan.
During the campaign media ran with the race card. When substantial claims were made about Obama, Democrats cried foul. Obama even said he missed the Kyle vote because he wasn't told when the vote was...lol
Having watched the Democrats laugh as media played on their side, why should I care what unnamed sources say now?
But, I do and this is getting rather pathetic, isn't it?
But then Ayers was asked to speak to highschoolers in Chicago. And we know what Democrats think about vetting that story. Hey, unnamed sources say Dodd got a sweet mortgage deal. Let's just shed the light of day on these stories, like the role ACORN played, or the rumor Obama plans to give undocumented aliens free health insurance. How about the rumor of thousands of new tunnels under our border the Democrats don't care about?
Of course the rumor (and evidence) pointing to Obama, Edwards and Dodd screwing Michigan is pretty clear, but no one wants to vet that one....lol.
And finally, let's give the Press new Press freedoms instead of the people who were the object of the original Constitutional protections. Under this travesty, "professionals" like the Post can keep secret their sources. Now that seems like a change I can believe in............

Carol,,,gatta get you laughing a little,,,,.here
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you will have $49.00 today.
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you will have $33.00 today.
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you will have $0.00 today.
But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund (10 cents in some states), you will have received a $214.00.
Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg.
A recent study showed that the average American walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means that, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon!
Kinda makes you proud to be an American !!

Craig,
I honestly would not have even mentioned this story until it escalated to television. Then would be the time to lay out the whole chain of events from speculation to NEWS.
We complain that the various outlets carry these stories and then pay attention when they do. I'm honestly sick and tired of poor research, missing fact checks, omitted context, lousy editing and glibness masquerading as importance.
This story falls into every single one of those failings.

Jamie, i don't think television represents "escalation" once a story makes 3 NY dailies, wire services, Drudge, Huffington and about 40 other high-volume web sites and blogs. the story is already in front of more eyeballs on the itnernet than cable can deliver. And i see none of this coverage challenging the lack of support in the original stories.

Posted by: Colorado Bob
| March 29, 2009 2:42 PM
Ok, Here we go...
Lord Bloggington thought he'd wake up this morning and see this story all over the blogosphere and the TV, which he hasn't, bearing in mind Lord Bloggington makes a strong effort to avoid consuming television and hasn't thus far today. He is starting to suspect that if there is such a video showing the VP's daughter snorting a line, it will probably never see the light of day due to the 'influence' of the VP, and considering how long the media suppressed the story regarding John Edwards infidelity.
Lord Bloggington's glee in the possibility that such a tape may exist is due to the enjoyment he takes when those who've built their careers on sending people to jail have to deal with similar situations in their own lives or family. Eliot Spitzer comes to mind... a guy who prosecuted people and had them incarcerated for participation in prostitution while simultaneously engaging in the same behavior himself.
Until the tape surfaces and is validated, assuming it does exist, Lord Bloggington will have to withhold his condemnation of Miss Biden and her family (her half-brother being the former Attorney General of Delaware). Lord Bloggington delighted similarly in the unsubstantiated allegations of GWB's 'cocaine use', and is disappointed nothing ever really came of that. Lord Bloggington admires that President Obama has admitted to his illicit drug use in the past and hopes the understanding gained form it will lead to a more sensible drug policy in this country.
As for Mr. Crawford's defense of covering this story as an examination of irresponsible journalism, Lord Bloggington would point out the many other more pressing issues facing this nation that could be discussed until this particular story is either validated or dismissed. Speculating on speculation is speculation itself. Lord Blogginton also thinks the presentation of the story as an examination of contemporary journalism is a convenient excuse to engage in the same sort of sensationalism. Such examinations could take place after the story was corroborated and would be no less valid then. Lord Bloggington is no journalist himself, so he feels no obligation to reserve judgment or observation.
Now, Lord Bloggington will make an earnest effort to make good on his self-imposed hiatus, and would be aided in that effort by his fellow contributors not addressing him directly, or even indirectly for that matter. Phew. Lord Bloggington is exhausted.

Craig, who should have the privilege of demanding the put-up or shut-up proof of an allegation? Can any more reasonably be done than having another journalistic outlet do an expose of the suspect piece?
It might be effective for Biden to do a 'Harry Truman', threatening to take the writer, editor, and publisher to the woodshed for saying such things about his kid.
And, if the allegations are somehow found to be true, he should probably look into how Jeb Bush has handled things when his family was having such problems.
In any case, it's a shame that any of these things become fodder for the press when there is no genuine news value in the allegations.

Fact: When Qualcomm made some predictions about the superiorty of their chipset back in 1999, CNBC ran "expert" after "expert" dissing that claim. ATT said their chip was better (now defunct). "Experts" representing banks that held other commincation stock positions chimed in with claims Qualcomm would sink and never keep patents. Story after story was allowed to air as old technology trashed new technology to create confusion and uncertainity. This helped lead NASDAQ down. Democrats did not advocate "truth in reporting". Stewart is a decade late.
And did Democrats care? Were there calls for responsible stock advice? ATT bought porno cable while Qualcomm signed agreements with China only to have China try to say their lifted chip was theirs....lol. Clinton approved high tech agreements with China so long as they honored their agreements over time instead of trying to steal technology.
This pathetic use of media by threatened corporations like Merrill, Goldman and ATT, Motorola and Nokia (which sells advanced communication hardware to Iran) is as unacceptable now as it was then.
And when the Press reported Bill was angry about some picture of Chelsea in a NYC bistro, they loved it. When the NYT rumored that Patterson was not supported by New Yorkers in dissing Caroline, or that Spector was supported in drivers licenses for illegals, did the DNC care?
I doubt things will change, but I would not go after media if I were Obama. They are the critical card in his present poll numbers. It won't take much to shake credibility once unnamed sources with much to say are given bandwidth in the Press.

Craig,
I don't consider "commentary" News. This is just so much gossip making the rounds from copy cat to copy cat. AP picks up a story and it appears nationwide. That still doesn't make it anything more than birdcage flooring.
Once it is out there, in that many sites, that is the time to call them on it except for the fact that I think it encourages just this sort of rumor as story.
There are so many stories in the world that need to be told. Salivating over speculation takes up valuable time. I realize the G20 isn't as entertaining as another pretty blond scandal or death, but isn't there a duty for news people in whatever branch of the field to do their jobs rather than just gossiping amongst themselves?

Lord Bloggington would just like to pose this question: Do you think the guy who made the video, some anonymous Delewarean d*****-b**, who apparently thinks $40000 is a lot of money (Lord Bloggington could spend that in an afternoon) would risk whatever professional and social reputation he may have and challenge the Vice President of the United States of America, the strongest and most glorious empire in human history, if it was a fake? If these are the kinds of stories, documented or not, that papers are using to try to stay in business, may it's time for them to shut down the presses.
If it's true, it's sad & the bigger story should be how drugs have injected themselves into even the most well-off families.
If it isn't true, Ms. Biden should slap them with a lawsuit.

Yep, the Press surp"Press"ed the story of Edwards allowing the shame candidate to screw HIllary and change the course of history. That shows how significant the Press can be. Does anyone here think that what kept Richardson from a cabinet position didn't disqualify him too from running? And if people know now what they didn't know about Dodd then, how many real candidates would Hillary have faced?
Democrats in charge now love how media played their game and while I advocate for the truth, Democrats have not been there very much. A large part of Obama's base thinks things about our government, history and recent world events, the clear majority of Americans repudiate.
Rumor has it Pelosi promised supporters she would never allow new drilling no matter what the majority of Americans want. I have many more rumors too.

ON another point. Obama now says he will ask Pakistan before hitting AQ targets in Pkaistan. Say what? India and others point to penetration by militants into the highest branches of Pakistani government. So we will give intel and then ask? This is far from what Obama said during campaign.
And he has ruled out special force penetrations too without getting approval from Pakistan which they will not give. One thing certain, in so far as credibility is partly a function of a consistent and principled stragey, Obama's credibility is slipping. He has too many cooks because he lacks experinace and knowledge. At least Reagan knew when to listen to advisors and when to fire them which he eventually did after Gorby blinked.
As far as Biden's daughter, I'm still waiting for the tape of MIchelle saying whitey and that tape supressed by LAT of Obama at an anti-Israeli party that Ayers and Rahidi attended.

They had a big story on cigarette prices in the Detroit Free Press. Saying that PM raised their cigarette prices by 71 and 81 cents a pack recently. If I did ,,then I would have to have a tinge of dislike for others,,that are not like myself,,it would leave me open to those kind of feelings towards Blacks,,,Asians,,,and all other Races,,,I could not ,,first,,cos,,I KNOW that there are no different RACES,,,we are all the SAME,,,just with diff skin colors,,and I love all of the people on Mother Earth,,,all of them!,,,including the Jewish ones,,and the Palestinian ones..but since we break them down by race,,the Jews are not the only ones that suffer from tinged hatred,,,and I don't think that I have to go thru a list of them for you.
Beth I love Jewish people,,,one of my nieces is married to one,,no kids yet,,but I will adore them when they come, just like the new baby that is half black,,we also have 2 Italians ,,one Polish,,,3 Irish,,there is just simply no tinge of dislike for anyone,,that is not one of us,,,we are ALL US.
I have said that Hamas,,and any Palestinians that kill Jews are evil,,both of them,,not just the Jews!!!
Once again you misunderstand my reason for posting such critical facts,,,I don't care if I change anyone mind about this,,or not,,,,but I do care about the lack of fairness( and have to say so) when it comes to the problems in that area,,,You once said that I could not change Brians mind,,,and that he would never be my friend, not everyone would be,,,that has been a lesson learned in life,(not everyone will be a friend, the ones here and in real life know me,,others respect me,,thats good enough for me), for all of us I think, not everyone will be our friends,,My only reason for extending my hand out to him,,was to show,,that he would just slap it out of the way, when offered, and he did just that,,with more of his vile talk,,,,but you defended him (knowing full well his track record) by saying that ,,he had his good points,,,funny, intelligent, etc,,,,,he is also Jewish,,,,so defending Jews, just because they are Jews,,that have been discriminated against,,should not shield them from criticism from the wrongs that they commit ,,,I am against any group of people that plans,,,and takes the lands of others that have lived there for thousands of years,,,,,We have done that here in the U S,,,and now look down at the people that we took the lands from,,and call them illigals.
Lastly, you read the Exodus,,what version? the Bibles,,our information has not been correct on these facts,,,movies have been misleading ,,all have wrong information,,,every thing that I have read,,,seen,,or heard,,up until a few years ago,,has been wrong, about the Exodus,,,I too gather all kinds of information before I make up my mind, one such fact( wrong and misleading) is that Ramses chased Moses,,it was his son that chased after Moses, not Ramses,,and,,,,and the fact,,that Hamas kills Jews( not even 100,,,maybe closer to 50),,,is no excuse to kill many, many, Palestinians (thousand and thousands),,,and take their lands.
Lest be clear,,,I think that Hamas is just as wrong for taking a life,,as the Israelis are wrong for taking a life,,,,but the Israelis,,,are not defending against people that want to take their lands from them,,,,there is proof of this,,even if you just want to say that they just want a buffer zone,,,,making a buffer zone in someone else's country,,,is invading them,,and occupying them,,period,,,that is a fact,,,,,Make that zone in your own country,,and than I will say that the Palestinians are completely wrong,,and that the Jews ,,don't have an ulterior motive,,The war like Jews even wants Hamas to send over the missiles,,as an excuse,,for more land, the governing politicians,,and the Military want, this war, not the citizens,,that want peace,,,and can tell you that my motivation, for criticizing Israel and denigrating them as you say,,,does not come from any prejudice,,,but from what I see as GREED for someone elses lands,,,,nothing more,,or nothing less.

Craig, I don't think the New York News is all that different than what I've been seeing all year. Stories written on pure speculation and opinion.
... from the last thread...

Flatus, That economist article you linked seemed to praise some of Obama's decisions, and it's complaints were the same as I've been read from some here: The failure to staff the Treasury and lack of strong enough leadership in some instances (ex. economy). At the same time, they did seem to think he and his administration are learning, and are impressed with his capacity to inspire (everywhere). Fair enough.
It seemed like a very objectiver look at the pros and cons of his administration, and did make some good suggestions. Glad you linked it.

Solar, I may be wrong, but I think Bethy meant the Leon Uris book "Exodus" that later became the Paul Newman movie.
A novel you might consider, but with well developed facts and history for the are and all of the people that have lived in that small space. Majority except for some of the prehistory (even there it's pretty well based in science) can be substantiated simply because that is the way he wrote is James Michner's "The Source".

Just going through the overnights and saw your sad news. Please add my belated sympathies to every-one's. Let me also say thank you for your granddaughter's sake that you felt it was something you could share out loud. "Back in the day" a miscarriage was one of those shameful secrets it was not polite to mention. Those of us who had such losses had to keep it to ourselves. We did not get sympathy. If we grieved at all, it was treated as something we'd get over quickly, and all we had to do was "keep trying."
I can say many years later that life does go on. It's just a much healthier process when we can share about our loss. Your granddaughter is so fortunate to have love, support and openness at this painful time for your family.

By summer, their modern farm is thriving, and the Corn Belt is moving toward a record harvest of 11 billion bushels of corn. But where will all that corn go? With their crop growing head-high, Ian and Curt leave the farm to see where America’s abundance of corn ends up. As they enter America’s industrial kitchen, they are forced to confront the realities of their crop’s future. In Brooklyn, it sweetens the sodas of a diabetes-plagued neighborhood. In Colorado, it fattens the feed trough of a 100,000-head cattle feedlot. Ian and Curt are increasingly troubled by how the abundance of corn is helping to make fast food cheap and consumers sick, driving animals into confinement and farmers off the land. Animal nutritionists confirm that corn feeding can make cows sick and beef fatty, but it also lets consumers have fast food at low prices. As feedlot operator Bob Bledsoe says in KING CORN, “America wants and demands cheap food.”
As Ian and Curt discover, almost everything Americans eat contains corn. High-fructose corn syrup, corn-fed meat, and corn-based processed foods are the staples of the modern diet. America’s record harvests of corn are supported by a government subsidy system that promotes corn production beyond all market demand. As Ian and Curt return to Iowa to watch their 10,000-pound harvest fill the combine’s hopper and make its way into America’s food, they realize their acre of land shouldn’t be planted in corn again—if they can help it.

SolarCrete,
I take your word for it. However, I think you underestimate the number of Israelis hamas has murdered - nearly 50 people in the Netanya bombing alone.
People blithely yak about 'measured response', but what is a measured response, when your town or your countrymen are under attack daily for years ? I wonder how the people of Chicagoland would respond, if folks from Indiana lobbed missles daily onto Monee for a few years.
It does appear that there was an atrocity or two in Gaza, however, it is not yet crystal clear just who did it, a couple of lone crazed gunmen or a big conspiracy. I've heard both theories, and tend to discount the latter. That's just my tendency. War gets people's blood up, and they do mad things when fired upon. I know that I have not always responded well when I've been shot at.
To be continued.

Solar, I’m sure Craig or LB wouldn't allow me to post the history of the modern Jewish State. It is simple enough however to get the general balance your comments seem to lack. Back before WW2, many Muslims in Palestine wanted Jews to immigrate. It was a great historical opportunity for the peaceful mixture of Islam with Western thinking, both in the Fertile Crescent and Iran. We have Hitler to thank for changing that. The Grand Mufti being banished from Jerusalem for wanting to drive Jewish immigrants out in the late twenties became Hitler's good buddy and after the war returned to Egypt where he created the neo-Nazi Muslim Brotherhood. This movement gave rise in bloodline to Arafat and Saddam, even Assad indirectly. This new hatred of Jews pre-dated Israel’s Independence in 1948 and played into the political strategy of radical Islamists now students of Hitler thinking. Hamas, the new group the more radical new King of Saudi Arabia will promote to rival Hamas, Hizb'Allah, Iran, Assad's neo-Nazi groups, AQ and even the Taliban seek the destruction of the Jewish Nation and not certainly on secular grounds.
Missiles have quickly eliminated the idea of buffer zones, but how foolish to waste one’s valuable property defending against terrorists seeking to kill you. Want to bet Obama won't tolerate AQ or Quds filtering missile launchers into Mexico? He’s in big trouble if they pull off an attack. You compare apples and oranges and the blood Israel has on their hands were borne of a ideology that regards them as pigs going to their slaughter. Israel is not perfect and oppose abuses and new settlements, but apples still ain’t oranges. Palestinian s rose up and tried to drive Jews into the sea. Now Hamas plays proxy for Iran. They push their own children as shields.
If Obama thinks Americans will weigh settlements, Israeli acts of criminal violence as equal to the disgusting hatred issued from the radical Islamist side, he is making a huge mistake. He was so bright to already have insulted the new leader of Israel in his "Likud" remarks last summer. Already there is the worry among many Jews, Obama is cutting Israel loose. Gone is the tough stand of Hillary. This makes the region far more dangerous. If Obama walks into a stupid dance with Iran or Israel, his credibility will drop with both Jews and "moderate" Muslims. And if nominations or advisors don't get it and have a history that points in the wrong direction, then blasting them is not the "Jewish Lobby" thing to do, it is the right thing to do for rational Liberal and Conservative alike.

***************************************************
I think the fact that Israel gave back the Sinai Peninsula and left Gaza shows that they don't want to take others' land. However, the Israeli government was crazy to give the job of siting the wall to the military. Soldiers see the wall as a sort of curtain, stretching from strong point to strong point, like a medieval fortification that keeps out invading armies. It ought to be just a barrier between checkpoints to keep suicide bombers out. The wall created far to many hardships for the Palestinians. Fortunately, the amount of time it takes to cross the checkpoints has improved dramatically. But the guy whose orchard is on the other side of the wall is still a victim. The wall HAS to be pulled back. It is the only fair thing to do.

Solar has it wrong on numbers and equivalencies and fences did help in Iraq. Fences slowed and stopped terrorist bombers in Israel. The question before the courts was where they could run.
Already criminals knowing Obama will do little on border security here have built more than a thousand new tunnels. The idea that creating security walls is foolish doesn't cut it. Democrats know immigration will sink them without security and they are not even ready to give up exploitation of illegals. Who would babysit their children or deliver their pizza? If there was a real security wall around Gaza, they would have no missiles to fire. It is not because it can't be done, but that no one wnats to pay for it or manage it. The concept of security still is a fuzzy grey area for Democrats.
I rather doubt it would have been for JFK or Reagan let alone Scoop Jackson. Americans always leave themselves out of the equation when telling others what to do. Here we would riot before a child was hung for being gay. In Iran, what is unusual about that? In New York recently, media went to great pains to disconnect the beheading of a wife by her Muslim husband as "nothing cultural". We make excuses, turn a blind eye and ask from others what we are unprepared ourselves to accept. And we are not very smart doing that. And our confusion makes us look weak before our adversaries daily propaganda. How quickly Democrats throw perception to the wind....
and what wind.....

OMG Policheck below backs up secret ballot death in Card Check Bill and Obama's wrong deficit numbers. Maybe they saw my post. Their comment that Republican budget proposals don't have numbers over looks the fact that the GOP will introduce amendments that will lower costs on a per line basis. They are saying, okay, let's use your budget as the baseline and then work on it. So Policheck is misdirected on that count.

Maxtrue,
I think arafat and saddam both invented a relationship with the mufti, to gain the support of the mufti's followers. There was nothing modern, or secular about the mufti, who proposed an old-fashioned theocracy, based on the 'Arab nation. 'ba'ath was a Syrian and later Iraqi imitation of the Lebanese falange, which in the '20s and '30s grew out of admiration for Mussolini, nationalism, and secular modernism.
arafat would never have gained the support of conservative religious Muslims if he had not constantly claimed to be the mufti's nephew and heir. arafat was not a Pan-Arabist like the mufti, and he promoted secular modernism. Besides, arafat was awfully chummy with those God-hating russian commies.
After WW II, falange became the dominant party of the Lebanese Christians, whereas ba'athism had a long difficult road before it could sieze Syria and Iraq. Part of the process of capturing Syria and Iraq was the creation of legends that would make the ba'ath seem less frightening to religious and conservative men. I think the legend of the mufti was grafted onto ba'ath.

I don't think your portrayal of Muslim Jewish relationships prior to world war ll is a complete picture. There was plenty of anti Jewish sentiment to the extent that even when Hitler was willing to trade Jewish lives for German POW's there was protest by arabs leaders they didn't want the children coming to Israel.

XR,,hello first of all,,,I enjoy your post's thanks
All I can say about Indiana lobbying bombs into ill,,is
Neither the right of self defense among individuals nor among nations is absolute--they both require that the response be reasonable. If someone breaks into your house, you have the right to use reasonable force to stop them--you do not have the right to kill everyone who lives in the neighborhood that the thief comes from!! (Even the Bible says, an eye for an eye--not 100 to 1 eyes!)
Killing 100 Palestinian civilians for every Israeli death approaches the same outrageous and ultimately illegal reaction. Self defense is not a right under Intl Law, it is a limited privilege for a limited and appropriate response.XR, and isn't there a UN Charter against such response??I don't know.
From fact sheet.com
As of April 27, 2008, a total of 13 Israelis have been killed by Qassam rockets since the attacks started in 2001.1 As indicated in the graphs at the right, for every Israeli killed by Qassam rockets, Israel has killed about 100 Palestinians through various means.
Posted by: SolarCrete

Solar, Hamas said it would not honor the agreement that curbed rocket attacks. Were you sleeping? Then the rocket attacks escalated. Iran gave the signal for war. Are we clear about that? Hizb'Allah was warned and was not yet prepared to join in the fun.
On what planet does the terrorist missile strikes warrent proportional retaliation? And what price the fear, the cost of defense systems, the constant signal that you are an enemy to liquidate? Self Defense is not an international law? Lay off the weed, dude. More than seven powerful nations reserve the right for pre-emption in the name of self defense. Just let Quds fire one missile from south of the border and DOD will be all over it.
You need both Constitutional and International law reviews. If you want to be picky, illegal combatants are not protected by the GC and in decades past were shot on sight like spies. All defenders of human rights and moral decency have an obligation to prevent the abuse of children, nature, women and the defenseless. Jefferson knew advocay and a stick was the only way Liberal Democracy could counter the historical forces that gave advantage to despots, tyrannts, Kings and theocracies.
Let's see Power bite on that one.
For the rest:

And this is for your amusement: http://www.military.com/news/article/March-2009/russia-plans-to-create-arctic-force.html
Against a series of important and consequential moves since Election Day, Obama takes off for Europe. I’m not sure he will come up with something as unifying as “tear down these walls”. Chek PM calls Obama’s stimulus ideas, “the road to hell”. Germany is Iran’s biggest trading partner and refuses to tighten sanctions. France is struggling with demographics and protectionism hoping fueling Middle East capability is their answer.. Africa is heading towards the cusp of radicalization. Islamic science plunges forwards forming new patterns of organization with criminals and cartels assisted by all seeking money or global advantage.
Hillary spoke of new alliances securing regional security. She said under her watch Iran would not be allowed to build a bomb. She seemed firm on NK, China, Russia, terrorism, even Hugo.
She was the lone voice defending Israeli strike on al-Kibar in Syria. What say she now?

From way up thread ...
"Nobody cares about "Journalism " any more and damn few even attempt to practice it. It doesn't pay as well as tabloids stuff."
I can't imagine that the turn journalism has taken hasn't disappointed most people. But it's not that there are no serious journalists anymore, just too few. It's hard to tell who's who sometimes. So we make choices, and believe whatever and whoever we want to believe. Everyone has an agenda, or so it seems.
The public is just as guilty as the media. No one can sell us anything we won't buy. Basic rules of 'Supply and demand'.
Craig, Am I being 'cynical'? Or just a realist?

saved it over on my blog
Talked to meverybody on my end of the block about the block club everybody seemed to think it a good idea.
Been there before, now the trick is to see how many show up Saturday for the meeting.
One thing that connected me with Obama is when he told of his first time trying to organise a communnity. He did all the work and nobody showed up. It was when I knew that he had been an on the ground knocking on doors organiser, not just a hired flunky. The hired flunky just wants to write up his success stories and not tell the times he has beat his head against the wall
I need two at least so with me , the three of us can legally form a board for the corporation. I hope we get more but I'll see.

Both had Treasury secretary Geithner as the guest.
George S. is a much better interviewer than his NBC counterpart. George got Geithner into a collaborative interview where together, he and Geithner peeled the country's economic onion layer-by-layer. The groundwork was skillfully laid for the follow-on discussion by the media panel.
It was very well done. He helped Geithner articulate the difficulties without being confrontational.
On the other hand, the MTP host David Gregory is trying to let his audience know that he is smarter than his guest. In effect, he is stomping on the onion. I got little from the Gregory interview.

Jack,
Consider charging dues. It helps if 'members' have a financial stake in their organization. The amount isn't as important as the act of buying in.

I agree
have dues, for one thing right now we need money to do anything. Not much but a little.
Something I need to find a way is for those dues to have benefits and still follow the rules of a nonprofit block club. Not all benefits have to be monetary. If I can look like I can deliver stuff from the city will go a long way.
My wife was laughing at me a while ago, I'm like a kid with a new toy. I forgot how much I love the idea part of this stuff.

Nothing shocks me anymore…but then again…

So where was the intervention and forced management of AIG, as this link’s story attests to?
I have never had anything good to say about GM management, but forcing Waggoner out …what good will that do?
Is this a trend? All bailout recipients will be at the mercy of the US government , for the government to appoint leaders for them? This is more of what we saw earlier when the auto industry took the brunt of the offensive against poor R.O.I. while the New York institutions were handled with kid gloves…more bullshit.

Hi SolarCrete,
Yes, the ratio of Israeli rocket deaths to the number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza raid is about 100 - 1. The number of non-combatants killed is actually closer to 24 - 1. However, the total number of Israelis murdered by hamas in that same 7 year period is far higher than 13. I'd guess the noncombatant number is more like 4 - 1.
However, I do not think it is the ratio of killed/killed that makes an act of war a crime. War itself is the crime, in my mind. Yet, I am strongly tempted by the self-defense argument. I cannot say like the Senator from Montana, that the attack on Pearl Harbor does not justify going to war. But, just where the border between justified and unjustified lay, I am totally uncertain.
I think we should also remember that until the wall was built, hamas used children to carry bombs into restaurants and onto buses. These bomb-bearing Palestinian children cannot be considered combatants, as they never reached the 'age of discretion.' Besides, they never even knew they would die when they reached their objectives. From a couple who were apprehended before they reached their target populations, we know that they thought the completion of the task would bring toys and candy. If these children can't be considered combatants, they must be considered civilians - a horridly grotesque new meaning for the word. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.
I appreciate that you understand the horror of war, and hate that people are dying - and worse - in that struggle. Your kind heart is the thing that I most admire about you. I wish all humans were as sensitive and committed to peace.

UPDATE 11:00 PM EST (added to today's post)__Later on Sunday the Daily News reported that the lawyer for the man who was trying to sell the video "ditched his client" and the newspaper then pulled back to describing the tape as showing Ashley "purportedly snorting cocaine." Still, the article presumes that Biden's daughter is the woman in the video, despite any confirmation of that claim.

What I meant, not so obviously, was that the child bombers have to be considered civilian casualties of the war. And their numbers must be added to the Palestinian side of that ghastly ledger, despite the fact that it was Palestinian combatants who pressed the buttons, killing them.
I am also reminded of the Irishman who remarked that 'the troubles' were a great boon to anyone who had a grudge against a neighbor or co-worker. This of course, is always true of both sides in any conflict. However, as we have seen in the Holy Land, there are more than merely 2 sides. In fact, we will probably see a 3 state solution proposed any day now.

The story about the Iranian weapons caravans in Sudan is plenty hokey. How did Israeli jets get past Sudan's new arsenal of red Chinese anti-aircraft missiles ? Sudan's previous vulnerability to US and Israeli air power, and red China's inexpensive menu of allegedly highly effective anti-aircraft missiles were supposed to be the bases of the Muslim Republic's love affair with commie China. The 'love oil' came later.
If the Muslim Brotherhood served as the hamas/Sudan go-between, then the brohood would have taken 'a cut' of the weaponry as it's commission. Mubarak's predecessor was murdered by these guys, and Mubarak has tried repeatedly to extirpate them, before they get him, too. The scenario I paint points to an Egyptian Army and Air Force combined operations intervention that killed anywhere from 39 to 900 people, depending on who tells the tale.
Of course, it is in Israel's interest right now to look omnipotent, and it is in Egypt's interest to look like a good Arab. Egypt certainly does not want to look like the Israelis ally against hamas. At least ,not with the Arab League Executive meeting coming up.

I'll be damp, Ms Cracker !
You mean to say that Willard, the more or less legitimate heir to the Tancredo Mantle as leader of the anti-Latino lynch mob, was actually caught aiding and abetting the INSIDIOUS INVIDIOUS ILLEGAL INVADERS ??? Slick willie the 2d, himself ??? How awfully reaganesque of him. I suppose he'll use this as a big campaign plus - the oh, so compassionate willard romney.
I don't know how I ever missed this gem. It's very embarrassing. I am covered with rue. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Actually Max, Hamas did signal they'd honor the truce, though why they'd trust the Israeli's I have no idea. Ever time Hamas signs a truce with Israel the military immediately starts targeted assassinations and bulldoze homes and crops of Palestinians to make room for settlers. Olive trees take almost three decades to grow, and Israel seems to take great delight in waiting until they're almost ready to produce before destroying them.
But still, collective punishment is a war crime and Israel created a backlog of over 4 months of food into the Gaza Strip, shut down fuel and water pumps, and stopped journalists from going in to report these incidents. Children are being permanently stunted from the malnutrition and have little access to schools to better themselves. When they do achieve scholarships Israel doesn't permit them to leave the Gaza Strip to attend outside schools.
Now they're bulldozing homes in Jerusalem that don't have permits, but of course they don't issue permits to non-Jews so Arabs have to leave to find living quarters.
Israel is a pure welfare state and relies on conflict to keep their free money coming in. Until they're isolated from outside aid they have no motivation to make peace with the Palestinians. They're also an extremely corrupt state, leaders in the sex slave trade and corporate espionage.
I take no sides, I just don't like the idea of innocent civilians being killed by weapons paid for by my tax money. I say stop aid to both sides and I think you'd quickly see them come to a peace agreement.

BTW, while you're at it don't forget the use of cluster bombs, mines, and white phosphorous, a particularly nasty way to die. Problem with cluster bombs is that there's less than a 50% activation rate and they stay around and go off randomly. The older they get the more unstable the explosive.

Solar - You completely mis-understood my post. I didn't say that I thought you were anti-semitic - not at all. In fact, I don't like to make accusations, except against my sisters, and I most certainly don't want to taint this blog and my place in it with accusations of any sort. Please believe that, and call me on it if I do.
My defense of you-know-who was not a defense, in my mind. I stated the facts as I saw them - he is capable of being interesting and not nasty. Others here agreed with me. I feel that I just spoke the truth. It was no reflection on you.
In fact, my statement to you was to try to ease your "disappointment" at his non acceptance of your hand of friendship. It obviously hurt and angered you, and I felt that you weren't cynical enough to throw it off. Your are kinder than I am. As for me, when I get to that point, I pick people off and discard like lint. There is not profit to be made and way too much to be lost, but I'm still sorry he couldn't fit in.
I was trying to show you that it was he, not you - that it wasn't about you. It was about him and his own lacking. I hoped to make you feel better - the flaw is in him, not you.
I said that "" I tend to expect most people I know or meet to have some tinge of dislike for all Jews."" That doesn't mean my expectations are met - I am just prepared for it.
. The people on this blog have talked too openly about their feelings, especially you, that I don't really worry about it here.
The Exodus I referred to is indeed the book by Leon Uris. It is a novel, granted, so it is not a reference book, but it is putting forth a message and that message made me start asking questions.
As for the Exodus in the Bible, please bite your tongue! (8:)
That's a very bad emoticon to say I'm joking. I do NOT look to religious tracts for reliable information. The Elizabethan language is enjoyable, tho.
My whole point in my comment was that this is not a fight between two teams playing a game that suddenly became hostile. There is more than history here.
I know very well, and said it in my post, that all ethnic groups have been subjected to hostility and prejudice. Anti-semitism has existed longer than any of the others and is continuing to this day. It began back in those days you have talked about here, and it has NEVER stopped.
What I said was that anti-semitism is so prevalent that it is a factor in every conversation re the mmiddle eaast. It is the 20,000 ton elephant sitting there in any talk.
You couldn't understand why people weren't horrified by the death toll especially among Palestineians. I was trying to tell you why - that's all. It isn't a level playing field over there.
Please don't post the history of Israel - I know it well enough.
I wish you would watch the film I've mentioned before. I have a dvd of it and would gladly send it to you. I'm not sure Hitler would have got as far as he did were it not for the ideal candidacy of Jews as scapegoats because the desire to kill Jews has existed in humans for thousands and thousands of years.
Please, Solar, don't feel insulted.
For anybody else who has wandered thru thus far, I apologize for this long personal peroration. I had to answer all of Solar's points because I was so uncomfortable with how he interpreted my earlier post. I hope I haven't offended anyone else in this one.
I'm gettin' outta here.

Has anyone googled backchannel? Here is what comes up. I believe this is one of the most disgusting examples of cyber stalking I have ever seen. Any of these people who still profess to have an ounce of liberalism in them should feel ashamed because they have moved squarely into Hannity and Limbaugh hate-speak territory. Make no mistake about it. This particular bit of ugly on Google was put there for a reason, and it is to damage Craig.
The BackChannel BlogMar 29, 2009 ... Crawford host a PUMA-Obama hate blog (On the Congressional Quarterly Web Site) for the soft core racist set, who spend most of their time bashing the ...

When will everyone understand the dangerous crap radiating from the Left? If they are taking shots at this bunch here including Craig, you can imagine how conservatives feel. So when you read some Republican blogs, understand they take on these people 24/7. How do you feel reading backchannel? Maybe like I feel being called a NEOCON everytime I warn what our adversaries are up to.
In the end, Obama will have to reject these pinheads and take refuge in the center. The question is how much credibility he will have left at that point.
