  2. CBob... just went to the post office..... got my seeds......

the second hour of the Diane Rehm Show was about our country's water crisis....
there was talk of how many hundreds of gallons of water it takes to create one gallon of ethanol..... and how many gallons of water nuclear power plants use.... if you'd like to hear a podcast of the show..... go here:
    http://wamu.org/programs/dr/09/03/25.php#25707

the first hour was about Obama's press conference..... the callers were very interesting..... I've been listening to this show for years..... all during Bush's administration callers would rail about how the press was too soft during his press conferences......

now they were railing about how tough the press was on Obama..... one female caller even suggested it was because Obama was black.... I just wish his fervent supporters would realize they don't do Obama any favors when they sound like idiots.....

I agree the pushing of global regulations is important. A big part of our problem is we have been using 19th century regulations in a 21st century world. We are in a global economy and no amount of wishing is going to put the genie back in the bottle.

  7. Ree, Apparently, some are worried about the chemicals they'll use at the border.
    http://www.newschannel10.com/global/story.asp?s=10064574

"The U.S. Border Patrol plans to poison plant life along a 1.1-mile stretch of the Rio Grande riverbank to eliminate the dense foliage used by suspected illegal immigrants and criminals to hide."

.... probably a little late for objections.... it says the pilot project is set to begin this week.

  9. warren, just to give donald marron (interviewed with krugman on mon's newshour) equal time re toxic asset planl:
" ....It does at least three things. First, it creates a certain amount of transparency. We'll find out what these assets are. Secondly, it will create a value for them. We'll find out what people are willing to pay for them. And, third, we'll find out who's willing to pay for them.

These three things are central to getting a market moving again. So I think it's a very smart decision in terms of a very, very complicated problem. It gets things moving. It gets smart people focused on marketability and value and learning what they are

..... So what's needed now is a way to get the banks going again.
What this project will do, it will certainly show -- it will be transparent just how bad they are, at least to some degree, depending on which of the assets the banks are willing to offer for sale. And it will find some real buyers. So, yes, that doesn't solve the problem at all; there's no question about it.

But it does make the problem measurable and more understandable. And it does create pools of capital available to buy new assets, to buy new loans, and this is bound to stimulate the economy and bound to stimulate lending and housing.

Chloe, ya know, they had this stuff they used back in Vietnam to try and do that - now what was it called - agent green, agent purple, oh yeah, Agent Orange. I understand it worked very well on foliage but did particularly nasty things to humans who became exposed to it. Weren't they planning to build a fence or something to keep our Mexican neighbors out? I coulda swore I heard something like that.

  12. I didn't realize we had a Border Explorer link on Craigs blog list. (the things I don't know are never ending!)

"An 11th hour lawsuit against the US Customs and Border Protection of the Department of Homeland Security buys time for creatures of 1000 living species that are slated for demolition along a 1.1 mile stretch of the US-Mexico border."

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | March 25, 2009 1:59 PM

  13. Pogo, I know they liked the idea of the fence. But I guess the reason they want to get rid of that foliage, is so the 'bad guys' (whoever they may be) can't hide in there. It's pretty high foliage, according to the picture Ree linked.

One of those links did say the spray is safe for small animals though. But they're also worried about what it will do to the water supply.

Solar, This made me giggle because of a somewhat obscure musical from ages ago called "Little Me" that starred Sid Caesar that had a great, funny song: Boom Boom

    If the girl... (boom-boom!)
    And the boy... (boom-boom!)
And they get together and they both... (boom-boom!)
    C'est la grande... (boom-boom!)
    Et la grande... (boom-boom!)
That's the one... (boom-boom!) ...for me.

    Oh, a stray... (boom-boom!)
    Occasionally may (boom-booom)
    Prove a gay... (boom-boom!)
    And carry you away. (boom-boom)
    But the prime... (boom-boom!)
    That's sublime... (boom-boom!)
    Won't be true,

    Not if you
    All the time... (boom-boom!)
What I mean is, ma cherie,
Save la grande... (boom-boom!) ...for me.

  30. If this Congress waffles on health care again they might as well label themselves as bought and paid for as every other group of politicos that we have had since WW II. Even the bailout just shovels more taxpayer money at those with money.

Decent care at a decent cost is the one thing that the American family needs They pay more and get less than any other developed nation on the planet. Do we have to lock up all 535 of the weaselly critters for a month in an inner city hospital for them to get the message?

Mostly I just wear khakis and a decent shirt - and boat shoes. If they don't like it they can show me the door. As the old saying goes, I've been kicked out of nicer places than this.

Term limits in California are not making things better --I think they have made things worse. But I am open to any suggestions you have to improve the current legislation.

Right now it's just musical chairs in the legislature until their pensions are vested or they are investigated for criminal wrongdoing...and the lobbyists and staff have ended up holding all the cards and mostly the lobbyists because they have all the money.

  44. Flatus, socks are supposed to match something other than each other? I have socks in just about every shade of black - my biggest laundry challenge is finding 2 socks that match each other.

Solar - being a heathen (divorced protestant) married to a Catholic, I have a pretty good idea what Newtie's up to. He's just politicizing what is really nothing more than a personal act so that his wife can take communion without committing some mortal sin. I'm guessing they attend a pretty conservative church with an old school priest. Of the 3 Catholic churches in this area, 2 of the priests would have required ME to have my prior marriage annulled in order for Mrs. P to be considered Catholic enough (i.e. not married to a heathen divorcee) to take communion. The third priest said something like - "You were raised Catholic, you got divorced and had your marriage annulled and you want to rejoin the Church? You can certainly do that and you're good to go. He's divorced and protestant? That's interesting - maybe we can convince him to convert." (Guess which church she joined?)

  46. I'll be honest, I didn't read more than a couple of lines of Warren's comment from earlier in the day. And I don't read Krugman beyond occasional glances. That said, here are my observations.

If I understand correctly, Krugman, based on what little I did read of Warren's comment, is saying that the stimulus is too small. If so, I see that as a significant change from his positions earlier last year where he chided traditional Keynesians as, in essence, being passe in our mundo nuevo.

Krugman, if I understand correctly, has totally capitulated and is now embracing the totality of Keynesian doctrine.

I find that remarkable, but not surprising, as Krugman is a pragmatist and recognizes that his earlier timidity was intellectually unsound.

With this change, I have more respect for the man.

But, as I say, this is based on my brief glance at Warren's earlier piece.

She said, "We don't work with Pintos." "Why not?" I asked. She mentioned something about them being junk or something. I then said, "I thought you could help me, but apparently you can't!" She responded with, "I'll take you off the list, Sir." She then hung up.

    I hate 'em.

I think putting a cap on the money it takes to run for office makes sense, but I also foresee an immense proliferation in the 527's (?) and don't think that would be necessarily good. It might intensify the partisan
divisions and even get violent. Just thinking and saying...

Well, kinda but are you sure you want to talk about it in public?

Posted by: whskyjack Author Profile Page | March 25, 2009 6:52 PM

  79. Viv - furthermore, I'm in awe just generally of what you accomplish, especially since you're always so nice.

I am in favor of a president's being very visible and happy to have his job. I've said it before and guess you all get tired of hearing it, but seeing anyone doing her/his job and glad to do it is a relieving experience.

If all a pres did was hide in his office and work too hard and frown at the camera in his/her few appearances, it would lower the mood and confidence of all of us.
I would also create a suspicion that maybe she/he is beginning to resent our demand = maybe getting a little paranoid.

So I say go on Leno and Letterman - be careful of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert and maybe even Craig Ferguson, unless you're sure you can handle them,
    Mr. Pres.

Niall Ferguson's comment that money has value because we believe it does goes to political power, too.
A healthy pres gives us confidence in our situation, and when repubs (or other opponents) criticize such, they only make themselves look whiny and petty.

Oh, yeah, I like that AIG' s letter, and he even agreed they all get paid too much, too.

  83. Obama all the time and we'll get tired of that quickly. Overexposure and under explaining. Like explaining a coherent policy south of the border. Central American gangs and other dangers are also coming from the South.

The former policy towards Mexico and Latin America was to open free trade, invest and contribute to the drug war. The trade bills along with our European partners were the best means to confront growing Leftist power south of the border. That is why Hugo fights the trade bill. In fact the growing link between terrorists, drug barons and indigenous pathologies like FARC and Hugo have been cited by Gates before and after the election.

Obama instead talked of cutting military aid. Delaying both border security and new trade bills. Democrats point to Columbia's hard hand towards Unions, forgetting Hugo kills Unions and Union head from Columbia was caught in a meeting with FARC..lol.

The other well publicized part of the former plan was to tighten border security which Democrats went along with disingenuously when the polls favored it a year ago. They blamed Bush for failing to enforce work place laws but now did not fund the extension for e-verify. Has something changed to reverse Obama? I think I mentioned Mexico months back when the cartels were killing cops like flies. Notice how far away Obama has moved from a crack at immigration. Stay over exposed and that will be a question too. You can’t always vet the questions, pre-pick the questioners and control the topics.

So is Obama moving towards that status quo again in Mexico, having run on change? Obama-all-the-time will get asked these questions. It is the product of over exposure. Obama does have a tendency when hit with something he is unprepared for, says things that later show he has up to speed. See fact check on some recent speeches. Next Michelle will make the rounds.

And we've got a long way to go......

Posted by: maxtrue Author Profile Page | March 25, 2009 7:16 PM

  87. KGC - maybe the circle will be cheaper. By-pass isn't very clear to me.

Now, see this is what I mean. I had finally go my body interested in living in a pleasant clean straightened apartment. The shirts I ahd ordered for my bil's birthday arrived and I called my sister to let her know.

She wanted to see them but I said I might actually get some work done today, and she said ok.

Then my niece, who was with her, said I could go to her house and releieve nanny, who was with Liam.

Now Liam is the middle child and adorable, but none of us gets much time alone with him, and he's very different when he's not with his big brother, Alex. I'm a middle child, too, so am very aware of how
alex draws all our attention, including Liam, who tried to act like Alex.

So what do you thnk I'm going to do???????????

I didn't say they took out anything. I said that the Republican claim that it prevented secret ballot was a lie. That wasn't in there in the first place and the Republicans had to take it out of commercials. Of course the lie continues in non stop knee jerk emails since they aren't covered by law.

Don't they check the background of these people?

Another Obama administration nominee withdrew his name Wednesday as questions emerged about a nonprofit group with which he had been affiliated.

Jonathan Z. Cannon, nominated as deputy director of the Environmental Protection Agency, cited questions about the now-defunct America's Clean Water Foundation, for which he had been a board member. He said he didn't want to be a distraction.

In 2007, EPA auditors accused the foundation of mismanaging $25 million in taxpayer funds.

  105. Some more information from a Constitutional Scholar on John Yoo's infamous Torture Memos.

Here's a link to a story on what I always said about the past administration.

"Legal expert Michael Ratner calls the legal arguments made in the infamous Yoo memos, "Fuhrer's law." "

A short portion from the start of the article below.

"In early March, more shocking details emerged about George W. Bush legal counsel John Yoo's memos outlining the destruction of the republic.

The memos lay the legal groundwork for the president to send the military to wage war against U.S. citizens; take them from their homes to Navy brigs without trial and keep them forever; close down the First Amendment; and invade whatever country he chooses without regard to any treaty or objection by Congress.

It was as if Milton's Satan had a law degree and was establishing within the borders of the United States the architecture of hell."

  108. "Specter spoke against both of EFCA’s major reforms: card-checks and binding arbitration. “The issue which has emerged at the top of the list for me is the elimination of the secret ballot which is the cornerstone of how contests are decided in a democratic society,” he said, before immediately adding. “The bill’s requirement for compulsory arbitration if an agreement is not reached within 120 days may subject the employer to a deal he or she cannot live with. Such arbitration runs contrary to the basic tenet of the Wagner Act for collective bargaining which makes the employer liable only for a deal he or she agrees to.”

Some Democrats and labor advocates have been open to a compromise bill that would leave out card checks and keep binding arbitration, which many believe is the EFCA’s most important provision. Such an arrangement would put conservatives in a corner, since they have framed their battle against the bill as a battle for secret ballot elections. Yet, Specter’s decision to denounce binding arbitration closes the door to his supporting such a compromise."

I don't see where card check isn't in the EFCA Jamie. Perhaps you could explain.
