The Rangel Crisis: In or Out, Do Something

| | Comments (115)

House Democrats have a choice -- punish Charlie Rangel or protect him. Doing nothing only makes it worse. And for now, that's what they're choosing, putting off a vote on his ethics issues.

rangel4.jpgHere's the short version from CQ Politics on what the New York Democrat faces: ". . . accused of raising money for a public policy school in his district from an executive whose company received tax breaks from his panel, failing to report $75,000 in rental income from a villa in the Dominican Republic and the leasing of rent-stabilized apartments in New York."

If true, this is the same sense of entitlement and privilege that just ended Tom Daschle's bid for the Cabinet.

Republicans are pushing a resolution to remove Rangel from his chairmanship of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. Unless Rangel can prove his claims of innocence -- which is hard to evaluate since the investigating panel is dragging its feet -- Democrats must either try to clear his name or make the hard choices.

Democrats have the votes to keep Rangel in power, even if they have to cede the moral high ground to do it. And that's the point -- they can't maintain what appear to be contradictory positions between power and ethics in this case. So choose.

Choose to use your power to keep Rangel and take your lumps. Or choose a stand for ethics and let him go. It's the only way for a chance to get the story behind you. Doing nothing just makes it worse.

  2. It is way too soon in this administration to give up the high ground, particularly after a long campaign that promised to change the ethical morass of Congress. ... Oh yes we can!

If these charges prove to be true, then the best thing Rangel could do both for himself and his President would be to voluntarily step down. If not true, then he deserves to hold his chairmanship. But there can be no fudging on this issue.

Without the high ground, President Obama could go down in flames. We've had 8 years of double talk, obfuscation, and outright lies ... the public won't stand for more of the same

    Oh no it won't!!

  5. "Unless Rangel can prove his claims of innocence . . ."

    Craig,

I get what you're saying, but it always bothers me to see it framed that way. At a minimum, I'd say Rangel needs to come clean among the Democratic caucus, and state his case. You'd like to think that step has already been taken. Then let them make their minds up on either backing him or abandoning him to the wolves.

Charlie likes his position of power, but he should be smart enough to know that if there's a shred of guilt, he should be working to cut his losses.

After double decades of hating science to the destruction of our schools, if I were a Republican, I wouldn't be belching out more of the same. As far as the "tax" issues--I am of the opinion that in light of the huge amounts of taxpayer $ that are being tossed about--that the revelation of the various nominee's ' lapses only add to the anger that is simmering out there on Main Street, USA, where most people are just trying to keep it together--working, paying bills, etc--

And each time one of the "in crowd cool kids" is shown to have gamed the system (even if only for awhile) it just does not sit well with most people.

And the explanations that are provided of why they failed to pay taxes (something that most Americans do on a regular basis) only reinforce the double standard that many believe exists.

The Republicans keep saying that "Americans Overwhelmingly Oppose the stimulous" even going so far as to say "according to Gallup". And I totally love most of the Lady Vols that have come out of her program (even though Sue Bird from UConn is still my all-time favorite woman hoopster).

The main thing about Summit that FOREVER pissed me off (over and above her baseline grating personality) is that she jeopardized her unborn child's life when she went into labor in a jet over Virginia airspace, but insisted that the plane fly on so her child could be born on Tennessee soil. I think that is just plain outrageous, but I'd love to get your take.

  73. What about this idea...

    The Patriot Bonus.

    $150,000 X 171,000 = $25.65 Billon (just North of $25B).

Give every soldier over in Iraq and Afghanistan $150,000.

-$125,000 is strictly to purchase a home or pay down a mortgage (if a soldier already has his/her home paid off - s/he can transfer that money to a family member to be used for the same purpose).

-$25,000 to do whatever you want with (maybe buy a new car and put some in the bank).

The money will be released immediately and troops will be given the option to keep the money in a US bank account - or release it to someone back in the States.

We can also start a online job site where contractors can offer up their services to start building new homes for the soldiers. (All new homes will meet very high standards in terms of energy efficiency).

You could also do this with $100K to each troop. ($85K tied directly to home purchase or pay-off).

That works out to $17.1 Billion (that's nothing when you think about what we have been giving out recently!)

I know I would sure feel like my money was well spent.

Why you shouldn't listen to anything Reid says.
Earlier he threatened to keep the senate in session all night.
    lol
I guess all night ends before 10pm.

"The Senate adjourned tonight without a deal and planned to try again Friday to pass a bill. As he awaited a final Senate vote, President Obama admonished Republicans for standing in the way of legislation for which he once had hopes of winning broad bipartisan support. "

"Claire McCaskill is the worst and stupidest member of the United States Senate, by far, but Reid’s seemingly determined to give her a run for her money ...

Just watch the video above and see him lie and squirm in what’s a classic, textbook definition of a lousy, sleazy politician."

  76. And then anyone who doesn't support the bill doesn't support the troops!!

(Just think - some of the same Republicans who pissed away $350 Billion to failed banks are not willing to step up and provide a fraction of that for the men and women who really deserve a bonus!!)

Anyways, I think it is a really good idea on the substance - on top of its use as a weapon in the political knife fight over this bill.

  78. Getting Obama’s Birth Certificate into Court

"Despite the “little” bit of coverage, and the comments from our Congressional leaders that “the courts have heard” the cases, the truth is that not one SINGLE court, state, appellate, federal, even the Supreme Court, have actually herad the case on the merits of the case. Instead, the cases have been dismissed at each level for one reason, and one reason only– the Plaintiffs have lacked standing.

Obama has endeared himself to the legacy of Lincoln, so how ironic would it be if the federal False Claims Act were used to force the Obama birth certificate citizenship issue into the courts, on its merits."

Because Chris Dodd wrote much of the lines that made this mess. And he's getting older by the day, because a jack-ass like me in Lubbock knows it.

If we really want to change government in American , where do we start ?
We start in the Delaware legislature. That's where. All the corporate greed is born in the Delaware legislature. Want to know why share holders have no voice at board meetings in American ? It doesn"t start in some committee that Chris Dodd chairs, it's in the rules for corporations that are written in the Delaware legislature.

That's why you'll get railroaded as a share holder in Houston buddy. Because the Delaware legislature as already written the the rules that Corporation "Z" uses to screw you with.

Exxon is incorporated in Delaware friends, not Texas or Saudi Arabia.

  90. I agree at least on one point Max.

The economy is much more influenced by what the President does in terms of Foreign Policy - than what he or she tries to do with the economy. With respect to the economy, presidents are given too much credit when it prospers and too much blame when it falters.

In other words, the economy was good under Reagan not because he had a great economic policy - but because he set the stage for peace and US power. And Clinton was no harvard economist - but he sure did a great job of keeping the peace and getting people to like us... Obama should follow their lead.

Peace leads to prosperity and production. (While War is costly destruction.)

  94. Warren, amazing, I actually commend your last point. I would say two things. Confidence is essential and Obama has not shown confidence. Second, the lack of confidence is in a great part due to a total lack of firegn policy smarts. Obama will completely change his campaign bravado on Afghanistan. He is confused about Pakistan. He is at a loss on Israel/Hamas and he is completely being out smarted by Iran. Hillary had to break with the BS and start upping the stick.

Some insiders have said that Obama is angry that Iran is totally screwing with his "talking" move and making ever effort to make him look the weak fool. And a reckless Presdient would approve ASATs to counter Iranian advantages in space. They can intercept US communications and see what we are up to. Insiders say that Obama will blame the economy for making weak foreign policy moves. Oh great.....what a change.

This is serious shit. NATO just told Obama he will get LESS help than Bush got in Afghanistan. Is the EU going to embargo arms ships from GAZA? NO. We have a couple of ships and Iran is laughing.

The biggest hole Obama is stepping in besides a beast of a bailout that won't do that much except let some wealthy dudes here buy more housing, is foreign policy. Just what we were arguing about.

Now I am not an Obama enemy. I pray he gets his shit together, but right now Panetta is a worry. DOD wants out of Afghanistan until later when they can say "I told you so". Iran has made Obama look weak and foolish.

It is going to be a LOOOng four years. With friends like Reid and Pelosi, watch out. I don't think there is a big enough bus for Obama to throw them all under.

  95. American History 101 -

Why will Ms. Cracker not get her tax rebate check this year, but instead got an IOU from the state of California ?

    Answer :
    The ballot initiative process ............................
The ballot initiative process, has tied state government in knots.

    Question :
Why did California ever adopt this mistake from the Greeks, where everyone has a voice ?

    Answer :
Because the California legislature was once an wholly owned subsidiary of the Southern Pacific Rail Road, and the citizens of California, used that process to take back their government at the turn of the 20th century.

The Southern Pacific Rail Road was incorporated in Delaware, not California folks. That was over 100 years ago. And The Southern Pacific Rail Road doesn't even exist anymore.
But in 1901 they owned state government in California , lock , stock, and barrel.

No one has ever attacked the Delaware legislature to take it from the hands of corporations in American. This cozy relationship goes back to the founding of the gun powder works of the Du Pounts on the Brandywine River.

A very radical idea here tonight folks ...... Corporations are not people, they are pieces of paper. For this they will come and get me long before they come for GORDO.

Jamie -- I've flown from Andrews AFB on a general's
plane to (near) Williamsburg, It took about 45 minutes total. For the prez, it's too long to go by helicopter and car. The motorcade would have caused havoc on I-95. Too risky by train, which would also wreck a commuter system. I've taken a train from Union Station to Williamsburg and it took a couple of hours.

  105. republicans invested corporations with the characteristic of personality in 1881, so that they could have standing to sue in courts. So, blame the republicans if you don't like it, truemax.

Only a republican would call Sen. McCaskill dumber than imhofe, kyl, muck cain, bunning, or cornyn. No party in the last 25 years has produced a senator lower creature on the evolutionary ladder than bunning. He makes even jesse the blowhard ventura look like a human being. So, you outed yourself again, GORDO. PUMAMA

bowmanc, we can eliminate 45% of the govenment, including 100% of the waste and fraud (if not the abuse) by simply taking all the government jobs away from the republicans. That would give us a much slimmer, much less expensive, much more effective Washington.

If you had really favored small government, you wouldn't have supported the bushcrime family, the homeland security fiasco, the Iraq fiasco, or the nationalization of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Your true colors have already been demonstrateds, so you can drop the phoney 'fiscal conservative' pose.
