'Nationalizing' Banks Needs Word Play

| | Comments (253)

If the federal government does "nationalize" banks, it might be best not to call it that. The anti-socialism police will have a field day.

The joke in economic circles is to call it "pre-privatization." Feds need a phrase that connotes a short-lived take over, even if it isn't.

A few suggestions:

  • Provisional Control -- nah, sounds like communists.
  • Temporary Control -- a little better, but kinda blah.
  • Impermanent Management -- too many m's and e's, would look blurry on a cable news crawl.
  • Interim Possession -- think I like it, has a nice non-threatening bureaucratic ring, but "possession" a bit scary.
  • Fleeting Guardianship -- very nurturing, but perhaps too gimmicky.
  • Transitory Custody -- best of lot, firm and direct without suggesting permanent ownership. But what's the verb? Custodialize? (Couldn't use it in Scrabble.)

Suggestions welcome in today's Comments.

  1. Craig,

I can't come up with any suggestions this early in the morning, but I'm going to leave the curser in the right space and see what my cats come up with when the walk on the keyboard between now and noon.

Your Transitory Custody sounds pretty good.

So, was the "leaked" list correct? I didn't pay attention to the non-entertainment portion...which was most of it. I guess it was kind of cool when the gang of former winners confronted the new group of noms...but it was a litte wierd, too.

I did think Jennifer Aniston looked really uncomfortable.

Had to laugh at Craig's twitter about the way they stand on the red carpet. They teach them to stand that way just in case their eating disorder isn't doing the trick. I hope Matthew Broderick was just mocking everyone else.

I got teary-eyed every time they showed a clip from Wall-ee. (I guess I did see a couple of movies on the list; they come out on DVD so fast now.) My other fave was In Bruge...except for the icky stuff at the beginning, middle & end. Funny, funny, funny.

  23. Craig A+ again for providing a needed distraction in these economic times. The pundits focus on this critcal issue is as effective as that of our new Government.

Let’s recap the short period - First we have the hidden social agenda non debated rush through spendulus – that was to solve the problem, then we have the Treasury, then housing and now the flavor of the week for Barack is the Bank’s….

Now read that list and I ask you – does he have his priority in order?

This new Government get’s an F

No wonder the Barack collapse of our Economy is increasing. Look at the market since he was elected. Good Business leaders, Corp Executives and Board rooms around the world are asking this question - And as was said in previous post – look what we got.

(Now that I look upthread, I see that I'm a day late and a dollar short - again - with that suggestion - here's a shout out to Naomi. What's that old saying about great minds?). Of course I suppose you could try transitory democratization or better yet, transitory republicanization. Both are a little clunky and don't really man anything, but they might not give the republican anti-socialization crowd much to work with, particularly the second one..

The Reagan Revolution held as one of it's most important tenets , that corporations should be free to get as large as they damn well please.

    Remember that line ?
Now, they're wandering D.C. with a tin cup in their hands. When we allow corporations to concentrate large blocks of their market , we don't protect them from going over a cliff, we just have a bigger pile of wreckage in a bigger crater at the bottom.

  39. The bean counters are coming out with some more details about just how bad it was in Australia . This story, just deals with the heatwave before the fires.

" Monash University’s Professor Neville Nicholls analysed funeral notices to estimate a sudden 45 per cent jump in deaths in late January - 100 at least in Melbourne and more than 200 across south-eastern Australia. The three most deadly days were from Wednesday, January 28, to Friday, January 30. ............................ The actual toll of the heatwave may prove to be higher than Professor Nicholls’ estimate. Data from the Coroner’s Office reveals that his figures are probably too conservative. Deaths reported to the Coroner during the heatwave were 2.5 times more than at the same time last year. "

In Melbourne, the ambulance service responded to 1600 jobs a day, double the normal figure of 800.

‘‘People have forgotten about the heatwave, but it had more of an effect on us than the bushfires,’’ Mr Holman said.

‘‘We did more jobs in those four days than we had ever done before.’’

    Heatwave left hundreds dead

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/23/opinion/23krugman.html?ref=opinion

No, Ping, I disagree with your premise. You and the rest of the RW have been spewing spendulous, social agenda before fiscal blah blah blah without so much as pointing out what you think supports that proposition, instead asserting that a few million bucks of spending you don't agree with or in your case "The numbers speak loudly for themselves" makes your point (it doesn't) and while complaining that Obama's package didn't contain enough or the right (read regressive) tax cuts, and you consistently ignore the fact that Obama was handed a steaming plate of shit from Bush in the form of an economic downturn (read recession) that had begun 14 months before (with the downturn toward recession having begun at least a year and a half before that), went almost completely ignored by Bushco for the past 6-10months - except of course for th ecompletely ineptly handled TARP fiasco last Fall and repeatedcalls for more tax cuts despite the demonstarion in spades that they don't work to create a sustained healthy economy - and reached close to its bottom (we can only hope) by the time he took office.

Focused tax cuts and government spending that has been demonstrated to produce a stimulus effect with a higher multiplier than general taxcuts as an approach - if that's consideredby credible economists as putting a social agenda before fiscal recovery, well then I guess maybe I do agree with that. I caught a little bit of Bobby Jindal trying to put that spin on the economic recovery effort passed by Congress and signed by Obama- he sounded like an idiot.Mrs.P- who used to be a Big 8 accountant, was laughing at him.

Many, many years ago I was a runner for a firm who traded on the Mercantile Exchange Trading floor. I was told at that time to be able to even trade on the floor you had to put up $100,000.00 dollars. I'm fairly confidant that its a lot more now.

Those guys make millions every year with their trade deals they make so naturally they don't want to give up that money if they can help it.

I guess when the market reaches 5,000 or less they will cry how Obama did nothing to save the economy and that maybe he should have Nationalize the failing Banks like BOA, Citi Group and others.

Of course by then they too will be out of work.and that would not make me feel sorry for them one bit.

But just thinking about exactly what got signed in law last week. We are about to string one hell of a lot of new wires in this country.

  75. Ping, pardon my skepticism, but if you can't point out what social agenda items are being put before fiscal recovery and blame the size of the bill for your inability to do so, I have to conclude that you don't have any facts to back up the assertion, so either stop mouthing the meme or provide some specifics. And wake up - the private sector was given its chance to demonstrate its ability to perform over the past 8 years beginning with tax cuts on the front end and ending up with TARP funds on the back end. The private sector flunked its test. What possibly leads yo to believe that the private sector is willing to forego short term profits over responsibly developing a potentially sustainable higher level of activity? Nothing in the recent past - and I'll stretch that time frame back to the 70s, suggests that is a likelihood.

Social agendas like going Green and paying veterans what we owed them. There were social agenda items like birth control, but they were removed. Of course, funding only abstinence only programs was not a social agenda.

  83. The Smart Grid -
Just looking at the last two provisions above, we are about to build at least three large east / west lines. My guess is I-80 , I-40 , and I-10 .

We are about to engineer those wires so that a wind turbine making peak power at Goodland , Kansas is talking to a wind turbine at Sweetwater , Texas. And it's telling it's sister machine in Sweetwater, that it's electrons, are going to the east coast to run Craig's coffee pot at 5:30 in the morning. Now it's still 4:30 A.M. at Goodland, but it's 2:30 at the Altamont pass. People are fast asleep in Denver, they're not running dish washers. The "Smart Grid" is sending every electron from every turbine to the east coast to run Ping's toaster. Ping has a new meter on that wire that connects him to the "Smart Grid". His solar panels are telling the grid that's a sunny morning in Florida, and as the sun gains the sky, they're going to be taking up the load at PIng's house. That meter is going to tell Ping's dish washer when is the cheapest time to wash his dishes. Ping has the option of programing every plug in his house, so they all work at the cheapest time possible.

Tell your grand children to study electrical engineering.

Stop trying to blame Democrats. It won't work. The Republicans were in charge. Democrats did try to introduce more responsible spending and taxes to pay for it.

David Obey wanted to introduce a war tax but fear of Republican hysteria put the kaboosh on it.

The united states = Talking points,, that it is for all Americans,,,including the Republicans,,,Independents ,,,,middle class that does all the heavy lifting,,,,etc,,,etc,,

citizens Banking System= ownership of all Americans,,,and will recoup most of it's money back,,,,,,this one works for all Americans that are pissed of,,,,,,GET YOUR $ BACK

Did not watch the Awards last night,( haven't for 6-7years now),,,,Just like I don't watch any sports anymore, ( I do Championships) They are part of the problem than got us into this mess in the first place,,,,people used to say that they,,,CEO's ,,,Entertainers, Athletes,,, were worth whatever the $ that the Chumps ( us) would pay for the tickets,,,and the networks that charge tens of millions for a 30 second ad proves it,,,,we pay for this,,cos the corps,,,,just like Jax...used to say,,,,I just pass it of the Clients,,,and they in turn pass it of to the consumer

The energy Meeting is on,,,and will give Pickens an excellent networking opportunity ( the sole one speaking with all of the power brokers???),,,,there should be more than one energy corp in the meeting,,,,,,will he get no bid contracts,,,,,I get his e mails all the time,,,,I get some good out of them,,,and some not so good,,,,,I think that we can go along with him, on a proven performance contracts of yearly proven results,,,,,and leaving the door open to new contractors that will be developing new ways of energy products,,and new ways of energy conservation no? Although Pickens --I believe is all about $ he does have the means to help get things going in the right direction?>

So we are going to be very impressed by today's meeting,,cos of all the people there but,..,,

Don't me impressed by what shines,,,,,,Ask what that shiny thing does,,,,and how much it does,,,and where will it do it,,,Oh how much does it cost us,,,and a lot of more questions,,,,

  89. don't one - a tankless demand water heater and programmable thermostat go a long way toward that end. Throw a solar panel in and you've got the makings of a home energy trifecta. I suggest that the combination of a smart grid and smart people will be more effective than smart appliances (although I HIGHLY recommend replacing the old energy hogs with newer EnergyStar ones when they wear out or the home budget allows). And leave my coffee pot alone - it's plenty smart and it's off limits.

  94. We had tankless on demand systems in Turkey. While I wouldn't want the bottle of propane in my bathroom, I certainly liked the way they work. I looked into adding that here in the US and they're ridiculously expensive.

I'm actually thinking of adding a solar collector water heater. Partly for hot water use and partly so I can have a hot tub. I miss my deep soak hot tub but there's no way I can afford to heat on these days. Funny how no matter what the price of gas and fuel do, utilities keep finding a reason to go up.

I keep thinking banks are going the way of transit systems, where their real customers are the government agencies that fund them.

Don't forget about solar panels for the new and existing homes,,,they are not the roof typs panels,,,they are ,,from concrete footings (no foundation concrete walls) to what ever level the house is going to be,,,,these are 8 inch wall panels that are put together by an interlocking system,,,,,along with all other Ideas ,good ones that conserve,,,and new ones ,,,,wind turbines etc,,,what ever they may be,,,,,,the ones Im talking about will save up to 80 % of energy bill right now,,,not tomorrow,,,,,now more heating,,,and air cond,, bills to speak of,,,,,and with solar roofing panels,,,and , the water tanks that will conserve
energy,,,,it is all great,,,,the problem is educating the public to them,,,,and having them afford them,,,,,,that is what this meeting should be about IMO,,not just talk about the future,,,we can do exterior Solar panels now.

  98. The Problem With 'Nationalization'
Unlike Sweden, Congress would quickly politicize seized bank assets.

"From the beginning, the handling of the U.S. crisis has been politicized. The partisanship is as toxic as the bad assets on bank balance sheets. Both parties are coming up with schemes to impede the process of foreclosing on homeowners who can't afford their homes, which would get those homes into the hands of new owners who can afford them. Does anyone believe that a government bad bank will squeeze homeowners? To ask the question is to answer it."

"Rather than focusing on ways in which we can further involve the government in the financial system, we need to find ways to extricate banks from government's deadly embrace. Banks, at least the behemoths, were public-private partnerships before the crisis. Deposit insurance, access to the Fed's lending, and the implicit (now explicit) government guarantee for banks "too big to fail" all constituted a system of financial corporatism. It must be ended not extended."

  100. I watched 12 O'Clock High again this weekend. And I was reminded of the current fashion to say that only World War II pulled us out of the depression. One thing we spent money on was the Atom Bomb. 2 Billion dollars in fact on a deal that no one knew would work until they shot the first off at the Trinity Site.

But we spent even more money on the B-29. Nearly 2.5 Billion dollars.
Because without the B-29 to deliver it, the Atom Bomb was just a physics experiment.
Two projects from the War, that put hundreds of thousands of people to work.
If the New Deal failed , remember it took the biggest government spending spree in history, World War II to end the Depression .

don't one - I don't have the propane probem, being in an area where NG is my primary fuel, piped into my basement and everything - and the cost of tankless heaters is beginning to drop some as larger appliance manufacturers like Bosch get on the train and Lowes and Home Depot start to carry them. Americans seem a little hinky about them, but then, Americans tend to be hinky about things they aren't familiar with, don't they? I'm redoing a garage apartment we have above our garage and plan to put a tankless heater in. I only need a small one thankfully and should be able to get one for around $700. Not cheap, but for the life of it considering the sporadic use and the lack of heat loss from a tank, not bad.

There wouldn't be a problem here in the US. It was the 70s and a country struggling with modernizing. The landlord would send one of his kids down to stand in a long line to have it refilled. But the other house I lived in had a wood burning water heater, so the propane was a luxury.

I use it mostly for getting news real time. I get alerts from all of the major news organizations and interim updates from journalists and event organizers. Like today, McCain, McCaskill, and several journalists are twittering from the fiscal summit at the Whitehouse. Judicial Watch lets me know what issues they're following with a link to the full article.

Pickens (I'm sure it's not him) is giving a play by play of the energy summit, and a few friends are twittering impressions of new software they're using.

There are a few internet marketing people on and things become 'viral' even faster, like the Ashton Kutcher link Craig repeated.

  117. Ha, twitter. Another thing for me to worry about with LP. Funny story, at least to me. Two weeks ago LP's school had its middle school sweetheart dance. Because the middle school is split between the high school, that has a laissez-faire principal who trusts students, but holds them accountable, and the elementary school, that has a tight assed principal who trusts no one but holds no one accountable for anything, sixth graders can only go to the dance if asked by a 7th or 8th grader. LP is in the 6th grade and was asked to the dance - by the 7th grade daughter of the tight assed elementary school's principal. It all happened via texting on their cell phones. The principal was reading the text messages on her daughter's phone and almost had a coronary over her darling daughter asking a boy - particulary a 6th grader - to the dance and forbade her from doing so, so LP didn't get to go. A couple days later, for no apparent reason, the principal came into LP's class and gave the kids a lecturette about the dangers associated with texting people (which I am sure she sees an an entry level social activity that will eventually lead to sex) - and according to LP she stared at him the entire time. So anywho, since LP's phone has internet access, as does his IPod, I guess he's not safe anywhere. Glad he doesn't twitter or facebook - yet.

another thought also for all that want to save a little,,,you can lower the temp at the WH,,and also when turning on your water valve,,,one other thing that I do ---is when I turn on the water to shower,or shave ,,etc,,,,I put the water pressure on low,,,this gets the hot water up faster than if you immediately put it on high,,,,it takes longer cos of the amount of water that you requested from it

on a sunny day here in January and February..... no matter the outdoor temperature.... you can sit in my living room and sweat to death...... such a simple concept..... I don't understand why all houses are built facing south at this point.....

    Don1one--
If you are using it just to get info from other people, and you are very careful about your postings maybe not. But alot of what I have read about is people using twitter to just twitter people about what they are doing. Like the congressman when he was in Iraq. It just feels like a slippery slope to me. Something I am uncomfortable with. Besides, I don't have time to consistently keep up with this blog considering the amount of time I work in so many different locations, I could only imagine having to keep up with twittering!

It is not unique to twitter, anywhere you make comments can have problems if you don't take basic precautions. One is to do like you and I and use an assumed name. I was amazed how many peoplen who use fake names here, when they joined Craigs face book group used their real names. Just because face book says you have to doesn't mean anything. It is not like they check ID's.

It is becoming like a fantasy book where you only share your true name with your most trusted friends.

I twitter because it's fun and part of what I do is consult on internet marketing so I need to know. (And when I posted my profile I knew what it should have been, I'm just a lousy proofreader. That's what I have QA for.)

I'm not trying to convert anyone, just clear up a few things.

On the other hand, I don't have an intelligent phone like Craig. :^)

I've never used my cell to read email or access the internet, since it has a broken hinge I rarely use it for talking and if you call me I'll probably ignore it unless you owe me money.

When I was a trouble shooter at Cisco it felt more like a leash than a luxury, especially since I covered time zones in Europe, the US, Japan and Australia. With built in GPS and all ISPs storing email it's really an invasion of privacy just to carry a cell phone.

Just curious, for the people upset with the idea of cars having a gps do you carry a cell phone?

    YMMV

  152. Ah, yes, skiing. Love it, but it's like every other damn thing I love (Mrs. P notwithstanding) - it has its risks. I've done a mild knee tweak - back when I thought I was better than I was and had my bindings adjusted a little too tightly. And I did dislocate my shoulder when I was first learning - about my 3rd day on the slopes, but it was the umpteenth time for that shoulder, so I can't blame the skiing. Unf ortuneately, LP has taken up snowboarding - which has its dangers, too - he fell and busted his ass last weekend and had to ice it on and off to relieve the discomfort Sat. night and Sunday. And let me tell you if you didn't know - 12 year olds can whine with the best of them.

    The End of Texas Oil?
How a handful of families dominated and lost control of the country's energy supply.
"Boone is the last of the great political oilmen. People were listening to his ideas about wind power for about five minutes last year when oil soared. I kind of make the argument, without too hard an edge on it, that the era of the Big Rich is over. The end of the Bush administration really marks the end of Texas political power."

"The economic culture is kind of Texas-flavored high tech. People don't realize that there are more Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Texas than anyplace else. The level of education is so much higher than it was 50 years ago. I go home and it's almost a little bit sad. It's like a Texas-flavored Ohio. We've still got cowboys and ranches. But if you spend your time in Houston and Dallas and Austin, you can almost forget there for a few minutes that you're actually in Texas."

Corey...I would share your umbrage about what your mom said if Heath Ledger was a soldier who had died in combat and she was questioning why he was getting a posthumous medal.

But I think you should probably cut her some slack. From what I've read, he basically killed himself through prescription drug mismanagement. Don't think that makes him a hero, or anything close to it. He's basically just a movie star who died in a way that tens of thousands of other people die each year.

What offended me was not that he COULD get an Oscar, but that conventional wisdom deemed him a slam dunk just because he happened to die. I think that was unfair to the other nominees. The category clearly seemed to be judged more on emotion than actual merit.

  190. OD - I agree with you completely - and there's a further point to consider. Not only did the New Deal help a lot of people, it also kep the Depression fromgetting even worse. Un-ravelling needs to be stopped first before it can be fixed, and you have to be in a position to do the fixing before you can actually fix.

I wholeheartedly agrre with all the sentiments expressed lately on the pleasantness of the the blogs - no more angst, no more chilling words and feelings.

It's too bad it had to be dealt with that wasy, but, Craig, it seems obvious that there was no alternative.

  191. STurgeone,

I don't think John Wayne is comparable. There is a tradition in Hollywood of giving an actor who has been in the business 30 to 50 years an Oscar for their body of work that includes great or very popular films that weren't recognized at the time they were in the theater.

They don't always pick the most deserving film role to do this. This means that Wayne got it for True Grit not The Searchers or The Shootist. Come to think of it, The Shootist probably would have been posthumous.

If they don't have a current movie, the Academy will figure a way to give them the Gene Herscholt like Jerry Lewis got last night.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | February 23, 2009 7:54 PM

  192. I did think that Heath's sister was quite cute and with an Australian accent to boot! I kind of assumed he would win. Why else would they travel all the way from Australia for the ceremony? I could be wrong on that, but I was thinking about that last night. The academy gave Stan Laurel a Lifertime Achievement Award in 1960, but he wasn't feeling well enough to attend the ceremony.

Sturge...my quick and dirty search reveals that John Wayne was only nominated for Best Actor twice (Sands of Iwo Jima and True Grit) and only won once (True Grit).

He should have at least been nominated for his portrayal of Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers." I still think that was his greatest role.

  194. My Dad was a huge John Wayne fan. Probably saw all of his movies multiple times. Could remember most of the lines from his films.

  195. Corey,

You can often be sure that a Lifetime Achievement or Gene Herscholt award often means that the person receiving that isn't likely to be with us much longer. Remember when Charlie Chaplin came back to the US after decades to get his.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | February 23, 2009 8:04 PM

  196. Lardo,

Now we know why we tied last night. Similar movie tastes. Wayne was magnificent in The Searchers though I have a long list of his films that I love. He is literally the only one who could have been in the opening to The Shootist where they used clip after clip of him drawing and shooting from a very young man to an old one.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | February 23, 2009 8:07 PM

  197. The thing About Stan Laurel's award was that he received it 3 years after Ollie had died. Didn't have him to share it with. Although I have seen video of Stan polishing his award and smiling widely. He even called it "Mr. Clean".

Good points here! I just remember up until the primaries having this idealized feeling of what it meant to be a Democrat and make no mistake I was a proud Democrat.I'm a registered Ind. now and I''m fine with it. Deep down though I'm still a Democrat because I believe in what I think the party used to stand for and to some degree still does.I do feel the Republicans are responsible for most of are current problems but I realize just placing blame upon them won't solve anything,of course Democrats aren't blameless.Unfortunately IMO bi-partisanship is an illusion.I agree having a true third party would help but I'm not holding my breath....How's the exercising going now that you've been so busy with work?

I don't think the Republicans are the party they used to be either.

At the local level parties are probably more tied to tradition. I've met great Republican and Democratic politicians in Sacramento.

At the national level I think both parties have become so dependent on deep pocket money from business that the constituents they really keep happy are corporations. If they have that money then the elections tend to be locked regardless of how they represent votersw, this last election perhaps having some exceptions.

I'm doing well and work is staying busy, thankfully.I just got back in from doing an hour on the stair stepper.Feel good.I have 11 Solar panels on the roof for the pool now and they work exceptionally.I'm interested in a solar hot water system.I called Solar Fit(the company that did my pool panels)and they say a system runs about $3500,that's a little steep! I have a tank in the garage but i keep it off a lot of the time because its generally hot out there many months of the year and the water stays warm much of the time.I don't think at that price its cost effective for me.. I haven't learned how install my own system yet maybe when the panels are available at Home Depot?

What a horribly stupid, mean spirited, and downright gloating attitude this dumbass Senator spewed... Doesn't he know that when people are facing difficult health issues, they are focussed on getting well? Cancer patients, among other illnesses, need support, encouragement, and LOVE. Shame on Senator Bunning! I certainly would not want a political opponent to determine how long with would be before I would die and then celebrate the opportunity to push a new conservative judge. I wonder if Bunning was/is part of that anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, among others, that were always praying to "God" that certain pro-life Justices would die.

I can just hear Burris' re-working Commander Decker's comment to Jim Kirk in The Star Trek the Motion Picture film, where Decker is about to do a cosmic union with Vger...

Commander Decker: "Jim, I want this! As much as you wanted the Enterprise…I want this!"

Power Junkie Burris in response to President-elect Obama's insistence that he not pursue a tainted Senatorial appointment by Blago.

"Barack, I want this! As much as you wanted the White House... I WANT THIS"

The reason I do this is to provide something to back-up what I say. I'll be more than happy to discuss THE ISSUE with you or anyone else.

Are you aware that there is an effort to suppress ALL non - positive info about Obama?

People talk about Conspiracy Theories. Here is something that is not a theory -- the conspiracy of Silence, Misinformation and Disinformation by the News Media in this country.

Fact: Obama refuses to make public certified documents related to his eligibility to be POTUS.

Fact: He has teams of lawyers fighting the lawsuits seeking to obtain these records.

Fact: The "news" will not cover this story accurately - they use ridicule and humiliation as a way to beat people into submission.

Tell us what you think and why, with your supporting links but please don't post comments that ONLY include copy-and-pastes from your links. Explain why that link matters to you.
