Change Climate Claims Daschle

| | Comments (204)

You could tell Tom Daschle was in trouble yesterday after a private meeting with senators. He was supposedly going to hold a "press conference," but instead said few words, took no questions and bolted from the room in what looked more like a perp walk.

In Washington as usual, someone who once ran the Senate, who has so many powerful friends, who endorsed the winning presidential campaign when it was hard might have had no trouble overcoming questions about his tax returns.

Ironically, it is the fed-up attitude toward Washington as usual that Barack Obama fostered that pulled the plug on his nominee. Appointing people who play by the old rules was not the change we expected.

  15. You know, I am GLAD he is not going to be in the Administration. I just can't help feel that people like Daschle, who has profiteered by making millions on behalf of the health industry is hardly going to be the strong guide for pushing universal health care and other reforms. He seriously is a poster child of what's wrong with the whole DC government culture that rewards former politicians with lucrative contracts and luxurious lifestyles. Like I said before, i am starting to believe BOTH major parties are as guilty at personal largesse in numbers that are indefensible !

CBob, I doubt Eric Holder can legitimately hold the balls of corporate CEOs to the fire when he himself has profited handsomely as a lobbyist (opportunist) for obtaining and expanding personal wealth. Am I the only one who things this is TOTALLY corrupt?

Doubt he will... remember when Daschle got his ass dashed out of the Senate, one of the major issues for South Dakotans was the fact that he and his wife stated that their primary residence was in Washington DC. I doubt he even knows what South Dakota looks like anymore.

As for fellow Hillary supporters kinda grooving on the fact that the people who slammed her so much in the primary and worked passionately to stop her from getting the nomination are now dropping like flies.....

I AGREE.. I don't know that it's really an adult reaction as much as a pedantic "SOD OFF SUCKERS" gut of glee.

(I still like that President Obama is president. I just hope he can start sticking to the promises he made during the campaign. Saying one thing during a campaign and doing another is not "change you can believe it." It's the old status quo, though to be fair the intransigent REPUGS are determined to stop him and they are,so far, effective road blocks.).

  22. I hope it wasn't because of the tax controversy but because of the ethical lapses. A number of people have commented on the "high road" Obama promised and all the pompous hooey about other candidates and their relationships to special interests. There was a refusal to acknowledge Obama's hypocrisy at the time and oh look karma taking a big bite in the ass of the new administration.

I did not think the TARP program was a good idea and I see nothing in the current package that gets to the heart of the problems. As long as bankrutpcy judges can cram down vacation houses but not primary residences there will be no fix. Obama has refused to acknowledge the housing market is the problem and has offered nothing to stablize it let alone begin to restore it.

Let's go back to the whole reason the Daschle choice was exciting to begin with. It was because of his knowledge of the Hill and the legislative process. As usual, your perspective is much too accurate.

For me there is a huge lapse between talk & action with the new administration illustrated by removal of the provision to allow bankruptcy judges to modify loans from the so-called "stimulus" bill.

To my surprise even the NYT is critical of this failure in an editorial yesterday.

"Sins of Omission: Help for the Beleaguered Homeowner"

"One serious disagreement has already taken place--between Senate leaders & the Obama administration--and it has been decided in a way that can only weaken the overall package. The senators had planned to make foreclousre relief part of the bill, by including a measure to let bankrupt homeowners have their mortgage modified under court protection.

But administration officials--who say they support the bankruptcy fix--rejected the idea of putting it in the bill out of fear that it would cause Republicans to delay or reject the package. "

NYT concludes: "Bankruptcy reform is the stick to whatever carrots the taxpayer will be asked to pay for".

The bankruptcy reform would not just assist those in bankruptcy but would provide the leverage to prompt lenders to "voluntarily" modify terms knowing the alternative could result in a bankruptcy judge ordering modification of loan terms.

For the past double decades those in power have raped and pillaged and now the bill is coming due.

For once in your miserable, useless overstuffed and comfy lives do what is right and take care of the nation. This President was elected with a mandate to do just that, and he needs to get off his "I just want to be nice and agreeable" ass and do it.

I want to hear some screams of outrage and I want to hear them on the floor of the Senate.

  78. Bohemian Grove

Every year the Boho's have public show as a benefit for the Monte Rio Schools one year Colin Powell appeared as one of the village people.

There used to be a lot of public demonstrations when the Grove was a much more controversial place --now it's just a bunch of old men who want to wear dresses and get drunk. I think the average age is around 90.

The majority of the members are not political but theatrical.
The initiation fee for regular voting membership is said to be $8,500, and dues are set at more than $2,000 a year. Because the regular members require entertainment, "men of talent" pay greatly reduced fees. On Wouk's acceptance, for instance, he was put to work writing a history of the club. . .

A high point of the middle weekend was the performance of The Low Jinks, the Grove's elaborate musical-comedy show. Over the years the Jinks has become the leading entertainment at the encampment, surpassing the mannered and ponderous Grove Play, which is performed the next weekend. The Jinks is vigorously lowbrow. . .

The girls were all played by men, and every time they appeared -- their chunky legs and flashed buttocks highly visible through tight support hose -- the crowd went wild. After one character called the secretaries in the show "heifers," the audience couldn't resist breaking into "moos" every time they came back onstage. . .

Art and antique appraisals. The world of art and antiques is chock full of fakes. For instance, faking antiques has been a huge business in China for at least 1,200 years. 3,000 years ago, Egyptian Pharaohs chiseled the names of previous previous kings off of monuments so they could take credit for the creation.

Good point on Eric Holder. Early on, he was the appointee, who was supposed to have the toughest time getting confirmation. Who knew he'd look so good compared with the tax dodging twins and poor Ms. Killefer, whose sin seems to pale in comparison with theirs?

Another interesting question is the timing thing. If Daschle's problem surfaced before Geithner's would he have been the one who was confirmed?

    Timing is everything.

If you can get the Kenyan Ambassador to sign a sworn statement , duly notarized, to the effect that the Government of Kenya has proof that President Obama was born in Kenya, then you would finally have one piece of evidence regarding your contention.

It purported to be a recording of a purported radio program that had a purported conversation with the Kenyan Ambassador, in which it SEEMED as though the purported ambassador agreed that President Obama was born in Kenya. SolarCrete,
I had a chance to be one of those Antiques Road Show appraisers, but at the last moment, I had a heart attack. I wasn't asked again. Of course, the appraisers have to look humorless, they are talking about people's family 'treasures' and the loot people have been dreaming about lugging home from the Sotheby's auction. People are really offended if you joke about their dreams; their money.

Would they also allow me to place a giant, rotating, internally-lit sculpture of my head on the highest building in town with a do-loop of a recording of me shouting: "I'm King Of All I See"?

Just curious. That would really sell me on it.

  159. Wow...I'm into minute number 20 at least, and loving it. Thanks to both Champ and Jamie, I think I have now found a permanent soundtrack to accompany my Trailmix browsing, not to mention another site for future ego development.

These are both great sites. Consider them bookmarked, Trailmix friends!

Just a thought---maybe we could use the Tune In Seattle site as our unofficial, common background music for everyone to stream in as they post here -- at least at night. It's eclectic enough to suit everyone -- I'm hearing some country right now -- and may just give us one more thing in common.

Just a thought. Thanks, and good night.

If you have "Tabs". You can put Pandora on one and just listen while surfing on another. You can also send your "station" to your phone, but I haven't tried that.

    Lardo,

You have the option of listening to their choice of music in a variety of genres or building your own. Right at the moment I'm listening to Sinatra and Our Love Is Here to Stay on my channel who just gave way to Nat King Cole and "Stardust". .... as you know, I have VERY good taste. :-)

Most of my appraising has been for people who want to know if they should upgrade their insurance. Unfortunately, the auction houses and galleries are seeing erosion of values. In most cases, I can safely say, no you don't need an upgrade.

Edward made the negs in about 1929 or so and they are of the Sea Nautilus shells. One of the photographs was even kicked out of the Armory Show in NYC in about 1929 or 30. They are contact prints from 8x10 inch negs. The prints were made in about 1959 by Edwards son Cole who was left instructions on how to print the negs. My prints are dry mounted and matted and framed. Any ideas as to the worth?

  177. For you Bethy,

The worshiping the owl ritual reminded me of a really neat owl experience I had a couple of years ago. I have these two huge cypress trees that sit right at the edge of the river out at the camp. The two trees are about 4-5 stories tall and they are merged together in several spots. It is a good thing they are because one is hollow and I think the other tree is actually holding the hollow tree up.

Two years ago, when my big sister was visiting, I noticed that a barred owl had made a nest way up high in a hole in one of the tree. She had 5 babies, the smallest I named fussy butt because that is all I could see as he sat up high up on one of the branches. He was the last owl to leave the nest. It was so special watching those owls grow up. I was very sad when they finally all left.

Several months later I was sitting outside thinking about my owls and wondering if they all made it when I noticed an owl sitting up on top of a telephone pole out in the front yard. As soon as I noticed the owl, as if he was waiting for me to do that, he flew off and joined four other owls. The five of them flew back and forth throught the trees in the woods across the street. It was strange. I think they knew I was thinking about them and just wanted to let me know they were all OK.

U.S. Plans to Curb Executive Pay for Bailout Recipients - NYTimes.com 05:10
    Source: www.nytimes.com

The Obama administration is expected to impose a cap of $500,000 on the compensation of executives at companies that receive large new infusions of
    federal bailout money.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/04/business/04pay.html?_r=1&hp

    My thoughts:

President Obama is right. The compensation levels for CEO's is untenable and morally (and possibly fiscally) bankrupt. This has long been a disgusting festering infection in corporate organizations. My only regret is that they can even get $500,000. THEY DON'T DESERVE IT... THEY NEVER DID AND THEY NEVER WILL. We must understand that we continue to create a super-rich class society through this fat cat compensation schemes, while everyday people, who bust their asses to perform, earn nominal wages and benefits.

AS McInsane said: "THE FUNDAMENTALS OF OUR ECONOMY IS STRONG". Translation: " My best friends in corporate America continue to live high off the feeding trough and the rest can eat cake".

"Senate recount trial judges: 4,800 ballots may get a look

  187. Okay all you rich Crawfordlisters now you can buy a new car and get a tax write off.

Senate votes to give a tax break to new car buyers.

    http://apnews.excite.com/article/20090204/D964FSQO0.html

I'm sure you all have at least $25,000 to spend on a new car. At least I believe Ping might since he's a lawyer. Anyone else make enough to help out our worsening economy by buying a new car?

My vehicle is nineteen years old and I don't owe a dime on it. My co workers ask why I don't buy a new vehicle since I could probably afford the monthly payments.

I tell them that at least I own my vehicle and if worse comes to worse and I lose my job and become unable to afford rent that I at least have a place to sleep.

Yes I have slept in a car before so it wouldn't be something new to me. At least its a roof over my head and I don't have to worry about it being repossessed.

So for all of you who can afford it why not stimulate the economy and buy a new car and take on some more debt for the sake of our economy.

Joking of course since most of us are in the same boat as the Depression continues to Deepen.

With the announcement of Judd Gregg R-NH nominated as Commerce Secretary, I am not particularly troubled by that, however... his insistence that the Democratic Governor must choose a Republican replacement strikes me as odd. Isn't that sort of like the "pay to play" controversies that we've been reading about recently?

Oops it's 5:40 am and I have to get to work...

anon, as long as the tax breaks are for lower and middle class opportunities to get a car, I don't have a problem. The super rich already have the means to buy as many cars as they want.

I said that about the Repugs buying the Senate seat of Gregg since how could they come out and say they had been assured that a Repug would be chosen by the Democratic Governor to fill the seat.

Sure sounds like they bought the seat to me. How about you?

    Posted by: anon-paranoid Author Profile Page | February 3, 2009 11:46 PM

  192. Also E.T. I'm not saying that the tax break is bad, what I'm saying is while many middle class working poor Americans are losing their jobs would it be a wise thing for them to do by taking on more debt.

I don't think it would be since most Americans are deep in debt and the Banks continue to raise interest rates if one payment to any credit card company is late to loan shark rates for all the other credit cards the persons may have.

Not good sound fiscal policy for Americans to take at this time if you really care about my opinion. Not trying to imply that your wrong, just that right know people are starting to buy the grocery's and paying for them on their credit cards.

The credit card bubble will burst this year as more and more people can no longer afford to pay them as they lose their jobs and homes or apartments if they don't own a home.

It is going to get really bad no matter what President Obama does I'm sad to say. Even though he's trying to help ease the pain for our country and citizens.

Bush\Cheney and the Republican Party have destroyed the economy here at home and around the world. The people in other countries are starting to protest and riot in there countries and one day they will here in America.

Be prepared for its coming to a neighborhood near you in the not so distance future.

    Good night.

  195. Mr. Horsedooty,

Jamie outed a major secret of the appraisal business. Now, I'll lose all my clients and have to sell apples on the corner to feed my insulin habit. I shall die even more destitute than I expected, and be buried in a mass grave in Potter's field like Mozart. No Great Pyramid, no terra cotta army, no trove of Danegeld. Sob.

Artfact will sell you access to the results of art sales worldwide for a day, a month or a year for a reasonable sum. I believe they provide 24 hours access for $25. For most people, 24 hours will cover just about everything. However, the pictures they show do not give you with the perfect knowledge of the condition of an artwork the way seeing it in person would. Iow, I don't think a sight unseen appraisal is worth a penny, and I wouldn't want to give a mistaken impression and be the cause of later disappointment. There is already too much disappointment in the world. The condition of the work is extremely important. Any tears, scuffs, stains, etc. on a fairly new print, such as a Weston, severely decrease the value. It would be different if it were an original of John Quincy Adams as sitting President or Queen Victoria as a teen ager. Then a little oily thumbprint in the corner might not matter at all. The son's prints will not acheive the same high prices that the old man Weston's prints will. Hand written notes giving instructions as to how to develop a particular print can add to the value.

Appraisals are educated guesses. One day a work offered at auction may not get a single bid at any level. On another day 2 people with more money than sense may both fall in love with that item and bid it into the stratosphere. Which day was the fluke ? Maybe both. So, art and antique appraising is more of an art than a science.

Take pics of all your treasures and write brief descriptions. The pics with descriptions should be kept in a place faqr from the treasures. These are the proofs of your ownership and the quality of the items. You keep the record away from the goods, because you are far more likely to have a fire than a burglary.

Btw, I can't imagine a Weston being kicked out of a show, unless it was one of his nude boys. Or, unless they objected to showing the old man's images as printed by the son.

Sweetie has promised to read to me, so I'm punching out of this job. I haven't worked this late in years.

(natch. name a decent republican trial lawyer, besides Karl Cambronne. can't can ya ?)

    From my 5:22 PM post

    - Certified copies of any and all passports and passport applications held in the U.S., Indonesia, Great Britain and Kenya.
    - Certified copies of any and all school applications, school registrations, grant or student loan applications or funding received for Occidental College, Columbia University, Columbia College, Harvard University
    - Certified copies of any U.S. Port of Entry Records
    - Certified copies of immigration and naturalization records

The documents listed above are NOT available for public examination -- they are being hidden by SoetorObama for a reason. The reason? They would reveal his "hidden" past. He uses the legal system to hide documents and you say "Show us the passport."

THINK and then ask yourself what could be in that "hidden" past. Do you know enough about him to answer that question? But it doesn't matter. Ignore everything (including The US Constitutiom) because he is Mr. Hopey-Changey.
