Was it a clue of any sort that a racist slur against the President came from a mayor whose name sounds like "gross" and who is from a small
city with a Spanish name that means "little cottonwoods?"
Nah, probably nothing prepared us for the stupidity of any elected official, even one in conservative Orange County, California, to think it was funny to send out an e-mail picture depicting the White House lawn planted with watermelons under the title "No Easter egg hunt this year."
Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose now says he will resign on Monday. Perhaps he's got a little plantation there in "Cottonwoods" where he can live in the past.

I think it's a Republican thing...
And last week, Mr. Dyson, now 51 and a deputy mayor to Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, struck again, in a dispute with City Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi over whether a company owned by a black woman should be rehired to market New York City bonds. "The Comptroller ought to know the difference between a bid and a watermelon," he said to The Bond Buyer, in a remark that was denounced by many Democratic officials as racist or offensive and revived questions about whether Mr. Giuliani's administration is insensitive to blacks.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to you today. Our time chronicling the life of Denver and Colorado, the nation and the world, is over. Thousands of men and women have worked at this newspaper since William Byers produced its first edition on the banks of Cherry Creek on April 23, 1859. We speak, we believe, for all of them, when we say that it has been an honor to serve you. To have reached this day, the final edition of the Rocky Mountain News, just 55 days shy of its 150th birthday is painful. We will scatter. And all that will be left are the stories we have told, captured on microfilm or in digital archives, devices unimaginable in those first days.

I think it's A Very Sad Day In America, when you must watch everything you say Simply because the POTUS is Black! Why, was there not this outrage when rappers said " The White house, is no longer White it is now The Black House", or "Now there's going to be Bar-B-Q's on the Front Lawn." With the amount of money, that Obama is spending in his first month in office, the last thing we need to be focusing on his remarks that are made by someone about Watermelons.

Newspaper convention canceled amid industry woes

An annual convention of newspaper editors has been canceled so their publications can save money and focus on surviving the recession.
It's just the second time that American Society of Newspaper Editors hasn't convened. The last time occurred during the final months of World War II in 1945

Here is my reply for this thread----is there a fine line between twittering, and insanity?,,,I guess if it dumb and works,,,,its not dumb!
Five surgeons are discussing who makes the best patients on the operating table.
The first surgeon says, "I like to see accountants on my operating table, because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered."
The second responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded."
The third surgeon says, "No, I really think librarians are the best; everything inside them is in alphabetical order."
The fourth surgeon chimes in: "You know, I like construction workers...those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end, and when the job takes longer than you said it would."
But the fifth surgeon shut them all up when he observed: "You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no heart, and no spine, and the head and butt are interchangeable."

Pardon me, Lampe, but there is a difference between racially offensive remarks made by stupid white guys who think they are funny and acknowledgments of differences by members of one's own race. Ask Fuzzy Zoeller about that. Lemme guess, you defended the chimp cartoon too, right? I figure that there is almost no link between providers' profits, suppliers' profits and insurers' profits in healthcare. BigPharma is doing very well, thank you very much, particularly in the US - thanks to our finding the margins not earned by them in countries that control the prices of the drugs they sell there (e.g. Canada).

According to a new Harvard Business School study, eight of the top ten states in terms of online porn consumption were ones where McCain won in the presidential election. Professor Benjamin Edelman analyzed anonymised credit cards receipts from a large online porn company. Based on their limited data, the largest consumer is Utah.
http://boingboing.hexten.net/2009/02/27/red-states-consume-m.html
Posted by: Colorado Bob | February 27, 2009 2:34 PM
Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.
"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

I really do find the open racial references telling. I grew up in a culture that thought that sort of thing was just OK, thank you, and thought that as long as you were trying to be funny instead of mean, people who you were ridiculing just didn't have good enough sense of humor to see that you didn't mean anything by it, which of course, you did. And in fairness, there was a broad spectrum of intent behind the openly racist comments I heard - and used early in life - before I went away to college and was introduced to a whole differnt world - one that had folks from all walks of life with all sorts of backgrounds and preferences that just would not have been accepted back home in the Birmingham 'burbs. That spectrum ranged from the jackass who really was just trying to be funny and held no real animosity toward AAs and never put a minute's thought to the hurtful nature of the comments, but just thought they were funny and knew that others did, too, to the down right f'n mean ass bastard who either was or would be a Klucker given half a chance, hated and resented AAs and would rather see one dead than allow his daughter to speak to one.
I still run into folks who do exhibit open racial bias, and across that spectrum - after all, I do live in WV - but it isn't nearly as common as it used to be.

I understand the sentiment of your post, but there is a significant difference between rappers performing a song about the change of the "white house" and that of projecting racial stereotypes. I am not a fan of rap, but I am sure it was a statement of cultural and racial pride by members of a historically repressed minority in the USA. On the otherhand, the small town Mayor doing his best to be absolutely offensive and degrading by diminishing people to nothing more than stereotypes that MOST blacks would find offensive. I understand that not all do, but we can understand that is isn't a compliment.

Tom, Lampe knows that. But it doesn't fit with the newfound Repug attitude of openness, so she becomes an apologist. Consider that the President has now been openly lampooned in the past week as a chimp and watermelon lover (to what extent is certainly a subject for debate) simply because he is black and looks like he has AA heritage. I only hope that these incidences of open bigotry continue - we may never see a resurgence of a conservative majority (remember - it was supposed to be a permanent one) if it does.
On another topic, I saw where one of the heroes of the '08 repug party, Joe the Plumber, had a book signing (at Borders I believe) where 11 people showed up and 5 books were sold. Go get 'em Joe. I guess his fifteen minutes is about over.

Family fears losing suburban St. Louis cave home
By BETSY TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer Betsy Taylor, Associated Press Writer – 11 mins ago
The home of Curt and Deborah Sleeper that was built in a cave, is seen Thursday, AP – The home of Curt and Deborah Sleeper that was built in a cave, is seen Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 in Festus, …
FESTUS, Mo. – A lot of people are struggling to keep their homes in these tough economic times. One suburban St. Louis family is trying to keep its cave.
That is, a cave that's also a home. Curt and Deborah Sleeper of Festus bought 3 acres of property and a cave in Festus in 2004, after they spotted it online. They fell in love with the unique geography of the old mining cave and figured out how to build a house inside of it.
But they've got a big payment coming due on the property and don't think they can afford it. If they can't secure new financing, they've got a backup plan — auctioning their cave home through eBay. Bidding starts at $300,000.
"I get the financing, or I sell the property, or I lose everything," Curt Sleeper, a self-employed Web designer and small business consultant, said Thursday while giving a tour of the home.
Missouri has its share of homes built into the geography — houses built into the ground or in a hillside. The Sleepers' home is unique even among them.

you disucss anything about the stimulus package, Obama's budget proposal, the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq, an approach to the economic crisis - anything of substance other than dismissing the racist faux pas of RWers? I guess it's just us white liberals who believe that racism is still a topic worthy of dicussion, even in the context of the world we find ourselves in. No, that's not right - the RW joined hands with the Obama supporters to spend a month contorting Bill Clinton's remarks parallelling Jesse Jackson's win with Obama's in SC as not indicative that Obama would win the nomination (of course, Bill was wrong about that outcome ultimately) as being racist and discussing almost nothing but that when two parties were engaged in vigorous fights to determine who would bring forth the best ideas and stand the best chance to win the Presidency 8 months later. I think there were more substantive things to talk about then, and agree with you that there are more substantive things to talk about now - but the Mayor of Los Alamitos chose the topic, we discussed it, you chimed in complaining about us discussing it instead of the other, more important issues of the day, but served nothing else up. I haven't seen you chiming in on the other substantive issues that have been discussed here at length inthe past few days asa the shitty economic news keeps coming and the Obam administration rolls out its plans. Repug racism inartfully hidden in offensive humor may not be important to you - fine - I happen to disagree.

if i might inject one observation into this debate -- as far as the Mayor's action goes, think it is important to note that this was not just an offhand or ill-considered remark. take a look at the link in today's post to the photo he emailed around. that took a bit of planning. just click his mug to see it.

Well, far be it from me to tell a black woman how to react to offensive crap about blacks, me bing a white male and all, but here's how one black woman reacted"
"One recipient, local businesswoman and community volunteer Keyanus Price, who is also African-American, said that she was “horrified” when she received the e-mail on Sunday, and replied, “Not all black people like watermelon… you should know better than that.”

Rind, both the green and the white parts,,is exceptionally nutritious, both are full of provitamin A, Potassium, and zinc, Zinc fights impotency,,I t also strengthen our bodies so that tey are less susceptible to hernias and it cleanses the urogenital canal, as well as the kidneys, and bladder while contributing to a healthy prostrate, Watermelon is "tied" for number one diuretic in the fruit world,,close to cranberries.

Iraq 'now its own responsibility'
“"[L]et me say this as plainly as I can: by August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end,” the president said, winning applause from an audience filled with veterans of the conflict.
“The drawdown of our military should send a clear signal that Iraq’s future is now its own responsibility,” he said. "

Hi Ping
I haven't read anything regarding President Obama and taxes that says his policies will lead to increased taxes for all.I do however know that if we have National health care it will and should lead to increased taxes for all.I also believe all of Bushes wars should have been payed for by increased taxes but instead thanks to Republicans we had tax cuts and hidden war costs..Just what kind of fiscal responsibility is that?

Lampe - the trouble with the yahoo mayor's email is that he is the mayor, an elected official who should represent all the people. As such he needed to be aware of how the email would upset many of those people and others.
I'm sure there are plenty of even nastier emails around and the mayor could have talked about it and shown the photo in his own living room - no prob. You can say and do a lot of things in your private home or family.
As a public person, he should have known better and as such he deserves to be a private person again.
I am glad he got caught but think the hubbub will die down soon. the point is that we cannot afford to have any government official coming out with such ridiculous pictures. Racial preferences and prejudices cannot be tolerated from a government employee. So I think it is incumbent on us to protest and the protest worked. Nuff said.
But I don't think you're a repub or white. You need to keep telling us how you see things - a voice we don't hear from anyone else.!

Here you go Tony - Just one fiscal responsible discussion.
No Way to Pay for it all Mr Obama via Central Control.
There is a better way..
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123561551065378405.html
FROM THE WSJ ON LINE.....
The bottom line is that Mr. Obama is selling the country on a 2% illusion. Unwinding the U.S. commitment in Iraq and allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire can't possibly pay for his agenda. Taxes on the not-so-rich will need to rise as well.
On that point, by the way, it's unclear why Mr. Obama thinks his climate-change scheme won't hit all Americans with higher taxes. Selling the right to emit greenhouse gases amounts to a steep new tax on most types of energy and, therefore, on all Americans who use energy. There's a reason that Charlie Rangel's Ways and Means panel, which writes tax law, is holding hearings this week on cap-and-trade regulation.
Mr. Obama is very good at portraying his agenda as nothing more than center-left pragmatism. But pragmatists don't ignore the data. And the reality is that the only way to pay for Mr. Obama's ambitions is to reach ever deeper into the pockets of the American middle class.
From WSJ.. The Best news source.

Read today's BBC on American economic numbers. A huge crime by the Left was the use of fear during the primaries. The media so wanted to nail Bush with the dreaded Depression, their own five month wailing has spurred a horrible mindset. One moment the world is falling and the next is Obama on Valentine's Day with an unsigned bill. One moment we are going through the worst disaster since 1929 and the next, Liberals are partying in France over their success to pass new spending for their pet projects.
Change like it ought to be? Why am I not surprised?
On another note, here is a good rational and Constitutional defense of not making DC a state. Those who don't care what the Constitution says should not read the link.
http://stubbornfacts.us/law/problem_congressional_representation_district_columbia_v
Last, a striking story of what happen in Lebanon to Hitchens and Totten. If truth in Middle Eastern reporting means something to you, donate some money to Totten. I think you'll respect Hitchens more after reading what happened to him.
It should bother you as we talk about the direction we are going. That direction at the moment seems oblivious to the changing world.
http://stubbornfacts.us/foreign_policy/middle_east/i_appreciate_that%E2%80%9D_christopher_said_%E2%80%9C_i_would_have_done_it_anyway_one_must_take_stand_one_simply_must
It is the law of physics how many things require specific solutions. As Mexico struggles, recession allows militant new gains; a smarter nexus of criminals, extremists, fanatics and adversaries unfolds. How to stop pathology and recession require transparent reasoning that targets therapies soft and hard. The thought of falling from one myopic mindset to another is the ultimate in depression. It spurs futility.
The stimulus does not have believable safeguards. The scope is pretentious when you're trying to put out specific fires. Accountability? Then add a half a trillion in more Liberal spending while declaring Healthcare, energy and education is slated for this year. I won't even go into the national security risks as we fight over a new air tanker, raptors and missile defense.
The bottom line is that you have to spell out the perils and the economic problems. You need targeted fixes. Even if Iraq cost a trillion, what Obama is proposing with his rag tag team, is certain over reach. It doesn't make sense with the dynamics we know about markets and conflict.
I am waiting to be enlightened........

Bethyboo: I am not saying what the Mayor said was right, what I am trying to say is this. We have people losing their jobs and homes at an alarming rate day after day, and Yes, there are some very stupid people in this world. But, everytime someone puts his or her Big Foot in their mouth, does not mean they have to lose their job. Racism is well and alive in our Country, and it probably will be for a while. All I'm saying is this " If these comments upset you, that's fine, but if they weren't said as a direct insult to you, why get so mad about it? Lots of people, here including myself have said somethings that might upset others, but you move on from it. I just don't get as upset about people who seem to not use their heads when speaking, it is not worth my time, or my energy to give people who make Racist or Sexist Remarks, the attention they are so desperately seeking.

The only thing necessary for evil to exist is for good men to do nothing.
Everytime one of these yahoos perpetuates one of these stereotypes, uses the N word, or lumps all ethnic groups into a bunch rather than treating them as individual and no one speaks up, then we are giving permission for the evil to exist.

Posted by: sturgeone | February 27, 2009 7:57 PM
Jamie: What you fail to realize is this. It doesn't matter to many if they have your permission to do or say anything, it happens. And , Blacks are not the only ones lumped into Ethnic Groups, as you say. Jewish people, Polish people, Italian people, German People, Mexican people, and the list could go on and on, have been stereotyped for years and years. So please this is nothing new. So everytime anyone makes a remark against those people, they should lose their jobs?
Posted by: Lampe | February 27, 2009 7:58 PM
I think understand what Lampe is saying, and I think I may understand her frustration, because there is a point in time when people really want to move beyond, all the BS, and just live their lives. Every time these blatant simplistic racist maneuvers come up,(and I am assuming right now), we are brought down to our apparent differences based on color alone. It somehow compromises the reality that many have successfully moved beyond those stereo-types and racist remarks and want to leave them to history.
I can see both sides of this, and I hope Lampe I didn't offend you with this post. I am trying to understand.

Yes they should. If they are in a position to represent the public as this mayor is, then they should be gone. It isn't a matter of me giving permission. It is a matter of me not wanting someone with those attitudes in a position to represent me.
I'm well aware of all the various stereotypes. It is one thing in private. I may deplore it if I hear something like that from an acquaintance and choose to eliminate people like that from my life, but that is private. In the work place or public where it can damage others, deprive them of rights or make them a target of violence, then you have to take a stand.

Posted by: blueINdallas | February 27, 2009 8:08 PM
Jamie, I believe 9/11 approached a trillion and while I would argue about your three trillion you certainly do not include any estimate of the cost of not removing Saddam. If you think our situation is static, I fear you would be terribly wrong. Iraq now does not impose the direct threat that Saddam would have by BIden's account. Iran would already be testing a nuke.
And the spending from the Obama camp, does it include such exuberance towards national defense?, Or is just not talking about terror or war, the answer?
Obama is now finding out about the hard choices Bush made. He is seeing his theory about Pakistan he seeded long ago on his college field trip, turn to dust. He is seeing the promised help from the EU in Afghanistan evaporate. He knows of the Nazis Hitchen faced up to in Lebanon and even the secret nuclear facilities in Syria and Iran. He knows the technology Hizb'Allah is getting from Assad and Ahmandinejad. He even knows how Russia is helping and that NK has more to hide. He knows the next battle field is Africa. He know the narco terrorists can unite as easily as Hamas and Fatah. Somehow I don't hear any indignation from Obama. I see nothing that places the right context of our times as the Liberal meme has turned so self ward.
So how this stimulus Bill can jerk forward so awkwardly as Democrats take no blame in TARP, is grotesque looking out on our vulnerabilities and threat matrix. We need every dime spent properly with a push to unlock the many mega tons of hydrocarbon we have now. Now is a good time for Democrats to push a 15 per hour minimum wage....lol Without a far more Reaganesque or JFKesque discourse, this present course looks more like a Liberal grab bag, poorly run, and more disconnected from reality that the Bush administration was about Iraq. How care? The Democrats will continue to blame Bush for all that goes wrong. The mindset is the wrong direction heading to the wrong kind of change.
I still wish to believe there is some grand strategy here, but alas, I fear, Obama and the O-team consists of largely pragmatic egoists. The polls are really going to have to heat up, for them to get the message.
Of course, Jindal doesn't help the opposition. We are lead by a political culture of unexceptionalism and that goes all around the sand box.

UB: You did not offend me. And Thank you for understanding what I was trying to say. My Grandmother, used to tell me, " Honey, if you let every little thing anyone says about you hurt you, then you are giving them power over your life." Words are a "Dime a Dozen" wait they may only be worth a nickel now. We elect these people, and then we put them under a spotlight, and then when they prove they are only Human just like the rest of us,we want their heads served-up on a Platter. This is not a perfect world and we are not perfect people. If we were this would be HEAVEN, and we would have "NO PROBLEMS" at all.

Your Grandmother was a wise woman, what's not to love there?
I think that maybe, maybe that people are so ashamed of how AA have been treated that we as a people really have no patience for it anymore....maybe it's what they call white-guilt....I don't know...but honestly the Mayor was an idiot for doing what he did in these times....he should have known it could cost him his job.
Politics is a rough game, and if you choose to play you better be ready for the extremes.

I'm not sure, if he should lose his job or not. For one thing I would have to see the tape myself, and see what lead up to these remarks. Saying something stupid, like a " WATERMELON' Joke, is very different from calling someone The N-Word, just because.

I was at Burger King a while back,,,,,there was this lady yelling and screaming at her kids,,,they were right next to me,,so I looked at the kids and smiled, said hello,,,they were both little boy's,,,,the lady told me to mind my own biz,,,,,I asked her how old the twins were,,,,,she asked me if I was blind or stupid,,,,that her kids were 6 and 9 year olds,,,,,,,I told her that I was neither stupid or blind,,,,it was just that I couldn't believe that she got laid twice!!

Max,
We have a major difference right from the begining. I do not think that the United States had any right to invade Iraq. I believe that the very first bomb that went boom was a war crime and that war crime after war crime has been perpetrated ever since.
I firmly believe that the invasion of Iraq took us away from the focus of finding and punishing Bin Ladin and I even more firmly believe that our acts have damaged our position in the world and destroyed our economy.
Now we are stuck with the awful fallout of the neo con actions that not only invaded another sovereign nation but turned loose an unrestrained ponzi scheme of greed in International banking.
We will probably come out of this economic downturn, but I doubt we will ever again be the power in the world that we were. Whether or not this is a good thing remains to be seen. Maybe it is time for there to be a more balanced share of responsibility among the countries of the globe

I think something is missing here in the conversation about racism. I posted a link above to an incident in Lebanon where Christopher Hitchen and two others were attacked by Syrian Nazis. While we debate whether an officer should be fired because he made a racist comment, many others around the world advance a racism and supremacy that murders and plots. The racism that drove Hitler is not the same as an officer vetting his bigotry. Many called Bush a monkey and even Hitler. I don't see much difference.
On the other hand, there are people who would kill you if they had the chance, drop some c-4 in your living rm while you watch American Idol. There are even dangerous racists in this country, but as I said, the organized advancement of really lethal nutjobs should be our greatest concern.
That doesn't condone the officer's word, but puts them in context. I hear racism of all kinds and the subtle and growing form of it towards Jews is particularly alarming. One cannot make the argument that America is becoming more racist towards Blacks, can one?

Solar,
I don't know about Lampe but a State Trooper on duty uses that language he/she minimaly needs therapy troopers should be unbiased in all respects. With power comes responsibility.
Time for me to call it a night.

Lamp,,,some times I think that you might be a little difficult to please,,,,,,,If that State Trooper has those kind of feelings,,,,how many innocent people might he have hurt,,,or will hurt,,,or worse yet,,,,,,,,,,,and would your want to see a tape that led up to that if it is one of your own?

Thank you,,,,,for that,,,,,and I can see Lamps side of it,,,,but not for a City Mayor,,,or anyone in power,,,,and can cause a lot of harm,,,to not just yourself,,,,,but to others,,,,so I think that we have a responsibility to kick that ass out of that job,,,,,,no if it is some one at work,,,,and said that,,,then no,,they should not loose their job,,,,just a good talking to should do.......but even a school teacher saying some hurtful thing like that should at a minimum get some time off to think about it no?

Well, that would be the most Depressing thing I heard today Jamie, were it true. I guess we will have to disagree.
History will show that the people of Iraq were bettered by the removal of Saddam and I certainly note your staying far away from any reasonable speculation of the cost associated with Saddam in power. Whether you understand the certain conflagration that would follow such a reality, or whether you just don't care, I do not know.
I will say that you do state the Liberal line quite succinctly. Everything is Bush's fault and America will never be the same.

I agree with Jamie completely and I don't consider myself a liberal. Much more a libertarian, independent at best.
One, we can't go around rescuing countries just because they have a leader we don't like.
Two, we've killed or been part of the killing of many more Iraqi's than Hussein has ever done.
Three, you can't impose Democracy on a people, they need to get to the point they want it.
Four, we could have stayed and help Afghanistan rebuild their country after we helped Russia destroy it.
Five, we greatly strengthened the position of Iran in the area and now there's almost no way we can stop them from getting a nuclear weapon. At best we can prevent them from launching one.
Bunch more, but I'm feeling lazy tonight.

Thanks for the link and answering my comment.I did read the article and I can't refute what they say in it.I know many of the same things were said about President Clinton by his critics and look how they were dead wrong! I know the President is a politician and many things will be said(some true and some not true) and done to get his agenda into law.I guess more than anything I don't have a problem paying more taxes for National Health care, infrastructure, improvements in education and many other socially relevant programs.I do wish everything are leaders say was accurate but that's an illusion just like bi-partisanship...

We lived in Pinellas County on the 15th floor on the water. Every few months a pod of manatee would lumber in and graze the local area until they cleaned-out all the tasty stuff. Then they'd be gone returning when things had regrown.
Back in 92 or 93 they started dying--turned out an especially virulent red tide was doing them in.

Loved your joke Solar. Another good one.
Well I am a heinz 57, part Polish, part Czech, part English, and part Scotch-Irish, acquired cajun, girl raised in the south(grits).
I just love watermelon and can't wait until the season gets here to chomp down on some. It's a favorite down here in the south and they grow the best close by in a small bump in the road called Sugartown.
Don't necessarily think it would be a bad idea to grow some fruits and vegetables on the White House grounds even if it was an idiot who suggested it. Throw in some arugala. It's a little bitter for my taste.
If it is home grown at least they would know the produce was safe to eat and like C-bob suggested the excess could be donated to the food banks. Sounds like a pretty Democratic/green thing to do.
Lampe you hang in there. Don't let anyone put you in a box. I understand your fear when you worked so hard to finally make some decent money and then someone asks you to part with it. Those on the recieving end as opposed to those on the giving end are less likely to be sympathetic.
I have a good friend who spends every penny he makes, never saves and when I was whinning about my loss of my savings he just laughed and said he was glad he didn't try to save anything. I wanted to deck him. He also didn't waste any of his money on insurance and when Rita hit, Fema came along and bailed him out for his losses. He made out better than I did with insurance. Why waste your own money if the government will be there to help.

Having recently been censured for objecting to the idiotic non-comments that seem to begin nearly every daily blog, Craig, it is with some trepidation that I offer the following questions and observations that don't relate to your lead story.
What is the deal with the luxurious gold brocade drapery President Obama seems to prefer? In a period of extreme economic unrest, it is REALLY the appropriate backdrop for virtually every public event? It reminds me of Saddam Hussein's palaces, and I wouldn't be surprised if Barama (my pet name for the prez from the primary) whips out a four-foot-long, gilt-edged sword to intimidate the recalcitrant Republicans!
Also, what in the world is the president doing bouncing down the steps of Air Force One without holding onto the handrail? Apart from the unsettling and frankly fay image of both his hands flopping in some weird cadence with his rapid steps, doesn't the Secret Service have a right to be concerned that he might do a header onto the runway and end up cracking his skull? His wife, his children and even President Ford had sense enough to use the handrail, which still didn't prevent the latter from falling on his ass a few decades ago, but at least prevented him from taking a head-first dive.
These are just a couple of questions I will continue to ask until someone in the administration attends to them....

"The travellers have just listened to the Knight's tale and agree on the high standing of the Knight's tale. The Miller offers to tell the next tale and is convinced that he will beat the Knight. The Host suggests that the Miller should wait as he is quite drunk. The Miller replies that he insists on telling his tale about a carpenter. The Reeve, who is a carpenter by trade, urges the Miller not to make jokes about carpenters. The Miller replies he has no intention to insult carpenters in general. Chaucer warns the reader for the Miller's rude language. The Miller's tale is about an old carpenter who has a young wife and is duped by the suitor of his wife. The suitor is eventually duped by another suitor."
Yes, I think Chaucer pretty much had Trailmix nailed, six centuries in advance. This is pretty much why I love this place.

Do you suggest the taxpayers purchase a whole new set of drapes just for the appearance of frugality? That wouldn't be fiscally prudent at all.

"So Flatus, why did you leave?"
Got too crowded. Doing the math, there just wasn't enough time to evacuate Tampa Bay once they decided the big one was going to finally hit there--and, if we were lucky enough to make it across the bridges, would we turn in the right direction after we got to the interstate, or would we drive right into the storm's path.
All these possibilities/eventualities looked more daunting as we became more old and more limited in our ability to react.
And then we became really tired of the carpetbaggers' assault on our environment.
And we wanted Spring and Fall.
And, did I mention it was getting too crowded?

And Lampe is probably off to bed...but I think she will have a laugh over this....back when my son was a senior in HS, his best friend on the football team, a big black lineman (and poet, as a matter of fact) named Charles, lost his foster family through no fault of his own and came to stay with us for the year.
He and my son and a couple of other black players somehow discovered Amos and Andy videos and started watching them as one might watch cult movies. They got hysterical over them.
Charles was particularly fond of the Kingfish.
One day I ran into a man I did business with and he was very cold (a white liberal). He finally asked me where I found the not-very-amusing message on my home machine. I had no idea what he was talking about.
It turned out that "the guys" had replaced my regular message with one from "Amos & Andy". The message itself wasn't racist -- but the Kingfish sure sounded like a stereotype of the worst order.
I got home and the entire football team was sitting around yukking it up watching one of those movies...I told them I might have to ban the damned things.

pong only favors fiscal responsibility when Democrats are in the White House:
Nixon accelerated Federal spending dramatically.
Ford accelerated Federal spending.
Carter slowed the growth of Federal spending.
reagan accelerated Federal spending dramatically.
bush1 accelerated Federal spending.
Clinton slowed Federal spending dramatically.
bush2 accelerated Federal spending dramatically.
Go back and read pong's posts. You will find that he scorns Carter, but idolizes reagan and the bushes. This is peculiar taste in one who claims to favor small government and lower Federal spending. It is more accurate to say that pong stands for fiscal profligacy.

Lets not forget Juneteenth, when black people have red soda and watermelon to celebrate freedom. Maybe the mayor was just trying to help Obama celebrate.
When I was in the Air Force blacks in our shop brought in strawberry soda and watermelon on June fourteenth every year. They had no trouble with it.
Off to sleep. One more day of sun and fun.

that's quite a provocative comment to leave, and then go off to sleep, don. we all enjoy watermelon in hot weather. i never did understand why it became a black stereotype. and that's the point, this mayor was using it to make fun of Obama being black. i just don't see anything funny -- or true -- about it.

I used to have a joke book from around 1850 that mostly made fun of Black folks and Irish immigrants. One anti-Irish joke paraphrased from that book :
Mr. Chauncey : "The wheelbarrow is a marvelous invention, Mr. York."
Mr. York : "Why is that, Mr. Chauncey ?"
Mr. Cauncey : "Why, because it taught the Irish to stand on their hind legs."
This ugly joke offended people I knew who were Irish (real Irish, Mr. Crawford, not 8th generation West Virginians) as late as the 1980s. I always liked to use that to illustrate my rejoinder when people though Poles, Italians, or Blacks were too sensitive about Pollack, Guinea, or Coon jokes. If the person to be educated had a name like Charles Krauthammer, George
Will, or Ann Coulter, I would change the wheelbarrow user into a German, Englishman, or Maniac.

Craig, The whole thing was a throw back to step n fetchit. All the "scared of ghosts" and Amos and Andy.
The sad part about all that is the black performers who supported their families, became famous and did what they had to do on the Chitlin circuit.
There is a place for studying the history and admiring the talent that those men and women displayed.
There is no place for the hatred and the humor (?) that belittles and injures.

Sea - I hate hearing that you are worrying re your situation. i spent many years of that myself but now I'm in good shape unless I do something really horrendously stupid - or the absolute collapse of the entire economy comes about.
I just hate knowing you're not enjoying what you ahould be enjoying. (By the way, my family is finally staying in one place, except for me, and I can now order some more chocolate-covered cherries!)
Lampe - I see where you're coming from, but I still am fine with that man's loss of his job. I'm not sure what the tape you mentioned is - I can't imagine it would ameliorate his responsibility. I don't say he should lose his job, tho. He resigned, I understand.
If Obama slipped and referred to someone as a "stupid white bitch", should he lose his job? No, but he should voluntarily undergo some counseling to find out just where there came from - Bill did. But I would be surprised if Obama would say it, and the world would be stupified.
His photo might not have been aimed at me, but it did hit me. It pained me to see that kind of attitude - it was very upsetting. I do not like that attitude.
As for Bush being called names, they weren't names which had a history of being directly at him or his group
in order to make him a sub-human. Racial and ethnic epithets usually derive from hate and condescension
which are aimed at depriving someone of civil rights including life.
As far as saying Bush was like Hitler, that is a very specific reference to his own behaviour, things he had done and/or been responsible for.
As for the Irish and potatoes, there is no stigma attached to eating potatoes. Suggesting that "some certain" people are really apes attaching a stigma. there is a difference.

So you are now for censorship? That's really hard for me to believe. Noticed a change in you lately. I assume you have been instructed to shut down criticism of Obama.
I've tried to follow your instructions. Guess I'm raising questions that are not supposed to be mentioned. It's not an internet myth that Obama is hiding documents from the public and using teams of lawyers. You don't know about these things? You believe it's all just "made up"?
You don't like causes? This is about the Constitution. There are legitimate questions that he refuses to answer.

Craig,
That was my point. What the mayor did was indefensible.
A long while back Ben Vereen got into a lot of trouble for a routine that he did where he was a black man looking into a makeup mirror though the decades being all these stereotypical characters. It was a tribute to those black people who did what they had to do to survive and did it with grace and unbelievable talent.
The NAACP had a cow over that portrayal. Decades later we can look at the Ben Vereen performance and the Step n Fetchit or Amos and Andy or Redd Foxx routines and say those people who created those characters were laughing the face of prejudice and taking back their humanity.

Btw, if rush actually liked women, I think they might like him in return. However, marrying a string of beards inorder to appear 'manly' seems abusive, and can't be of much help in getting female type people onto his side. Another case, consider if you will, is larry craig really popular with the fairer gender ? Nah, he and rush have always been more popular with the unfairer gender.

I have yet to see even one factual report. They are all heavily slanted in Obama's favor -- to the point of actual lies about the issue. Actually, the argument is shifting away from the BC a bit. Some believe that whole issue has been set up by Obama to take attention away from the "nbc" and Indonesian angles.

There is no defense for Grose the former mayor out in Cal.
I agree what Jamis is relating here in this thread, but the hatred was drummed up by the racist cartoonists who portrayed "mammies" and men with giant eyes-wide-open with an oversized hunk of watermelon, clearly aimed at attempting to categorize African Americans as stupid , and the watermelon was just a prop...it was racist portrayals that were the key, it could have been an ear of corn or a puffball mushroom or a muskmelon.
Watermelons just became the symbol of old-timey racism, an icon-throwback to earlier days---now being resurrected because we have a Black President. But whatcha gonna do?
Patsi? Senator Bunning had to apologize when he was gleefully predicting that Justice Ginsburg would soon be dead...no doubt that senile old fool Bunning was already imagining a conservative replacement, as in his mind, he probably flashed back and thought Bush was still President.
I saw several twitters about this topic as soon as it hit the wire.
Craig, what's it take to get a Senator declared incompetent and replaced? Bunning is nuts and getting sick, too. Sick in the damn head.

That person's comments about censorship are unfounded and perposterous, like everything else he/she/it dumps here. After all, this is your blog, and one of very few worth reading. I no more fault you for guarding the quality, character, and tone of your blog, than I would fault a billboard owner for denying space to the klan or terrorists.
Would you please reveal the moniker of the banned "maliciously persistent antigonizer ?" I must have missed that during the many travels and the meltdown of two laptops since late December.
I have noticed the absence (if that is logically possible) of several regulars, since I got my latest laptop. And am pleased to see the return of a new and improved edition of both Maxtrue and Champ, 2 former betes noir of mine, whom I no longer find bete-ish, but rather interesting and even convivial.
P.S. Thanks for the story about Los Alamitos' very creepy xmayor. It troubles me that people should be making excuses for him, or blaming the victims for being angry.

On the contrary, I hardly ever see the MSM.
It is alien to me because oft-mentioned portions of the narative have proven to be utterly false, there are several major logical inconsistencies, the alleged 'evidence' is not evidentiary in nature, much of the material is irrelevent or does not necessarily indicate a malign force, and this entire mish-mash of half truths, rumors, suppositions, and irrelevancy is promoted by several persons of less than sterling character. It is rather like the UFO garbage, only calculated to recruit a lone crazed gunman rather than sell books or promote movies.

You have nothing to discuss that you have not beaten to death already. Nothing you have come up with in the last 4 or 5 months has led to a single tiny fact, let alone to the momentous conclusion that Obama was not born in Hawaii. The very fact that you seek his birth certificate in Hawaii is overwhelming evidence that even YOU believe him to be a native of that state.
Ridiculous ? Yes. Your previous statements that the US MUST govern itself according to a now-rescinded 1947 British law, or that no person can be President who had a foreign parent are ridiculous - from the Latin root ridicere, meaning, to laugh. However, I no longer laugh, having come to my own conclusion that you and your fellow travelers are sinister figures.

some of these white northern liberals get to me sometimes ' they declare their enlightenment
and superiority when it comes to race relations
then admit they have never met a black person.
as a kid growing up in Mississippi we were desegregated and bussed across town to a all black
school. most white families chose to send their kids
to private schools we didn't have that option' couldn't
afford that. after a month or so of conflict and a few
altercations we were accepted or tolerated i guess'
i was befriended and sometimes defended by a black
kid'' robert watson ' i never did thank him for that.
kids don't think about such things' so if your out there
somewhere brother robert ' hope life has treated you
well and thanks for taking up for a poor scared white kid.
point is i don't need to be preached to by chris mathews or any so called progressive liberals
about race relations. i have lived' learned and experienced race relations all my life

Holder "was talking about all of us, from white Americans to African Americans to Asians to Latinos," said Eddie S. Glaude Jr., a professor of religion and African American studies at Princeton. "The fact that we would read Holder's comments as only about white Americans shows us how we are thinking about race when it is invoked."

There's a comment above about people who don't know or interact with blacks taking a higher road when it comes to racist talk. I don't completely agree with the posters premise, but I do think that people who don't ever hang with blacks might sometimes be oversensitive. I mentioned my son's friend Charles and his Kingfish impersonation...here's another example of what I'm talking about.
One day I was having lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, where a friend works....she's a young black woman and a serious feminist. We were talking about some outrage...and I used a couple of cuss words. The next week I stopped in late in the afternoon, and no one else was in the smoking section. My young black friend was just getting off work, and she sat with me. Here is the conversation:
Her: "I hope you know I got my butt in trouble for cussing last week. That couple in the back booth heard what was said about _______"
Me: "You didn't cuss, I did."
Her: "Yeah, but you're an old white woman and I'm a nappy headed ho." (This was post Imus)
Me: "My hair is nappier than yours."
Her: "Yeah, so you're a nappy headed ho, too....but you're an old white one."
(We had made jokes about me being an old woman many times...she wasn't snarking.)
Keep in mind that both of us were laughing the whole time. But if some had heard our conversation and didn't know us well....they might have been extremely offended.

So long Milton Friedman. Hello James Tobin
Goodbye Univ. of Chicago, all hail Yale.
A very interesting discussion of those that are guiding Pres. Obama's approach to resolve the economic crisis are students of the philosophy of the late Prof. James Tobin (Yale) who brought John Maynard Keynes into the modern era.
Government involvement in the economy, stiumulus spending vs. Friedman's vision of tax cuts, deregulation.
Will it succeed?---wishing & hoping.

Telegraphing a punch.
That is exactly what President Obama has done by announcing so early on of his plans to place higher taxes on "FAMILIES" making over $250,000 a year. This early warning will allow such families to find ways to shelter as much income as possible to avoid falling into this trap. The small business persons who does end up having to pay the higher taxes will do one of several things. Pass on the higher tax cost to their consumers, or though reductions in employment. Either way the individuals who will bare the burden of the new tax hike for the "rich", will be the middle class. Then there is the issue of limitations and/or eliminations of tax deductions for this same group of tax payers. This will not be received well by housing and Wall Street.

I can't decide whether to post about this experience from yesterday, but what the hey. My son phoned for "help" with a class assignment to analyze the racial stereotypes in a clip from "Amos 'n Andy." He wanted to know what I "remember" about the show. That answer is "nothing," I've never seen it (before my time, you know). I know only what I've heard about it which is made up entirely of abhorrent racial stereotypes about blacks. But upon doing a Quick-Wik on his behalf, I was intrigued to discover aspects of the show might be seen as laying constructive groundwork to societal changes of today. I have to wonder if during its very long run on both radio and television the show had any positive influence in humanizing the lives of black people where before there was nothing but the benchmark of slavery? I will be interested to hear how my son's paper and those of his predominantly minority classmates turn out (an oxymoron, he's the "minority" in his community.)

Patsi, I've been in similar conversations myself, and yes someone who wasn't used to that kind of interplay might have been insulted. I think the difference between that and the watermelon card is that your exchange was participatory with a black friend. The card was one sided and used a stereotype as an insult.

Ivy,
Amos and Andy changed when it moved from radio to television, not by content so much as by the fact that of necessity the radio creators and actors were white and the television actors were black.
The scripts became less stereotypical and more sit com in nature though the accents were kept. Even with those changes, the growing awareness of Civil Rights brought an end to the show. You Tube has several episodes you can watch to make your own judgement

I should mention that the time period was such that any joking around about the stereotypes would create an upheaval. It was a backlash against several hundred years of being treated as worse than second class citizens. For instance the movie made of Porgy and Bess in 1959 - all the actors insisted on perfect English even though the setting was Catfish Row.
In the early stage version Gershwin used the language as he had heard it. Later productions since the movie have returned to that more "real" depiction of the characters. The movie just happened to fall into that period when the protests and movement for legal equality was at its height.

All in the Family and Sanford and Son both started in the early 70s. This was a decade after A & A. After gaining a great deal of legal power and legislation, the characters were able to make jokes about the stereotypes once more. The later seventies and eighties gave rise to a Richard Pryor really pushing the envelope.
In a way, this makes the mayor's offense even greater. What world has he been living in that he could claim not to have even made the association? He should have been fired for pure stupidity if nothing else.

Check that Washington Post link I put up. The problem with "families making over $250,000" is that they don't know that they aren't middle class. Only 20% of people working make more than $100,000. A "family" where a combined or single income over $250,000 is in the top 5%
Needs tend to grow with income so even though those folks are earning more than ten times the lowest 20% of the population and 3 - 5 times the middle 20%, they only know that the money is being spent (housing, college, cars etc.)

Need to listen when they use Family - or individual..when discussing taxes.
For Family "is" the increase is actually at closer to 200K - they round up?
And for individual the amount is lower.

The major problem with welfare programs is that they suffer from not being able to individualize. As such, it can become a trap instead of an escape. Human beings are funny. The first time you give someone something, they are surprised and grateful. The second time, they are apprrciative but expectant. Along about the third time, they become demanding and get angry if the "gift" isn't received.
The only way to avoid the trap is to have a built in quid pro quo. You get the help, but it is a bargain not a handout. This allows the recipient their dignity and a sense of having earned the money by their actions.
On the government side, it can't just be subsistance living. Sometimes what someone needs is a well running used car. There should be a way to do that. Sometimes they need to get a GED and career training in a trade. The ones who can handle it, a college education. There should be a way to do that. Sometimes they need a drug or alcohol rehab program. Sometimes child care or an anti gang program for a teenager.
If there isn't a way to individualize the assistance, then too many get locked into a multi generational downward spiral.

A sobering assessment in NYT.
The continuing dismal economic news conflicts with Obama's spending plans.
There is a serious disconnect between what is happening now & what Obama administration is hoping & wishing for--which is based on vigorous growth rates in years to come.
Some economists are finally using the "d" word---for housing, financial system & stock market--we are there--it is a depression.
