Everyone in Washington seems to be in a hurry these days. Craig says that, for better or worse, that seems to be the only way the city knows how to get things done.(Produced by CQ's Andrew Satter)

  4. couple of words in david remnick's ny'r piece this week that need to heard more often:

too bad the word compromise got compromised... it's the life blood of good legislation that's effective and long lasting. imho.

  5. good morning, patsi. what do think of the speaker's threat to not let congress go home for the pres. day break until they pass the economic package? she also should keep them there over the week-ends and have early morning roll-calls...

On the other hand, don't come down to Feb. 13th and cram some BS through late at night so everyone can take their vacation while sliding paybacks to any number of corporations.

But come on - the hind site stab at Bush – You are above this stuff – that is so KO.
To bring the “Consensus Decision” as a slam only to GWB is the continued rewrite of the situation at that time and less then half truth. So many other issues post decision impacted the situation today.

You could have at the same time added that Clinton was fast and lose with the truth – then you would have won a cigar!

  10. Well, a video/ode to the works of Tom Cruise to start the day. (Quick, everybody jump on your couches in solidarity.)

I don't know who said it (maybe Yogi Berra?) but, "If it weren't for the last minute, a lot of things wouldn't get done."

Pushing America's panic button is something politicians know how to do. The problem is when we get "bailout fatigue, " etc., when there really is an urgent sitch.
    ----
Anyone find the "support Israel" add a little disturbing. They have every right to defend themselves, but trying to spin the American public into feeling sorry for them??? I don't know, I just found it pitiful & icky.
    ----
    Another hone of a dispute:

"Both sides are unwilling to give any ground, and both have valid points," said Jerry Prieto, the former Fresno County agricultural commissioner who has spent six months mediating the dispute.

  41. The tests involved 26 people with Fronto-temporal dementia and 19 Alzheimer’s disease sufferers. Participants listened to actors in different scenarios but using the same words. Lines were delivered at first with sincerity and then with sarcasm.

When delivered in a sarcastic tone, the humour was lost on patients with FTD who took it literally whereas Alzheimer’s disease sufferers got the joke.

The findings may go some way to explaining why Fronto-temporal dementia sufferers are unable to pick up on moods of people around them.

As the condition is very difficult to diagnose in its early stages, the sarcasm test could replace the expensive diagnostic tests that currently exist

  50. Compromise, etc.

In my experience, the best solutions materialize when those with stakes in a problem get together and converge on a solution.

The key is recognizing that they jointly own the problem even though only one side may recognize that a problem exists. In personal dialog we would call this empathetic listening.

Word for the day is Converge.

The Top 10 Hardest Jobs to Fill
    by John Rossheim
    Monster Senior Contributing Writer
The Top 10 Hardest Jobs to Fill

The economy is sputtering, and companies say they will make nothing but perfect-10 hires. Meanwhile, Baby Boomers are retiring by the millions -- and everyone wants to be a millionaire, not a wage earner. Where does all this leave employers and workers in their never-ending struggle to tip the balance in the American labor market?

From the perspective of an annual survey commissioned by staffing firm Manpower, these dynamics yield a number of occupations for which openings are hard to fill. Among white-collar jobs, the following positions make Manpower’s 10 Hardest Jobs to Fill list: engineers, technicians, sales reps, accountants and IT staff. And on the blue-collar side, the list includes machinists and machine operators, skilled tradespeople, mechanics, laborers and production operators.

I would have voted for HRC, because she has been around politics alot longer than Obama. I voted for McCain\Palin, because I thought McCain was better than Obama>PERIOD. Now, let me ask you a question. If Obama becomes the worst possible President for us right now. Does that mean you will never vote for another Democrat ever? Bush, was crappy, but simply because he was crappy, doesn't mean that every other Republican is the same. That is the point I am trying to make. I vote, for what I feel is best for me and mine. Obama has picked more than half of his cabinet from Clinton people, but, he didn't feel she was good enough to be V.P. explain that, if you can.

If, we all were Republicans,or Democrats, or Independents,or if we all worshipped in one FAITH. What kind of world would this be? Things aren't perfect, but this is what we have to work with. So please stop trying to make me out to be this God Awful person, because I didn't vote for Obama. As I said the other day I am more than willing to sit back and see what happens. One thing everybody needs to stop and realize is this. We can not foresee the future. If we could we would have never voted for GWB. We take a chance everytime we vote any one into an Office. 112. Here ya go Craig -- more to your taste! (lol) and I actually DID cut and paste from Olberblogging, re: the contest Craig won with 35% of the votes:

"With “The Fix” walloping 14 other contenders in the first poll and only 15 points separating the total top two vote getters in the follow-up poll, how could I actually in good conscience award the prize exclusively to “Trailmix”? Especially since he spent more baloney in advertising? In addition, allegations of poll tampering from the “Trailmix” crowd tends to taint the his late-breaking grand slam. If the Senate won’t seat Roland Burris, and Al Franken and Norm Coleman battle for 225 votes, should a 15 vote piffle crown our favorite pundit?

Thus, OlberBlogging decides to award two Favorite Countdown News Pundit Awards. Based on sheer math (and also creative campaigning) Craig “The Trailmix” Crawford earns the rank of Favorite Countdown Pundit. Chris “The Fix” Cillizza wins the “People’s Choice Countdown Pundit Award”

And since we have two winners, OlberBlogging will up the prizes ante. BOTH honorees will receive a beautiful handcrafted certificate, suitable for framing (or if they give me their addresses, I’ll frame it for them) and OlberBlogging (out of my lint-filled pocket) will donate $200 to the Houston SPCA animal disaster relief in both their names.

I hope Craig, Chris and all their adoring supporters will be happy. I know that the many pets and wildlife who face danger this upcoming hurricane season (and Hurricane Ike refugees who remain in foster care) will be extremely happy."

In the results choose a site that will allow you to download and install it. If that site looks kosher, do the download and install. There should still be an help menu at the top of your page. When you use it, go to contents and type in key words to any problem. For instance 'password'.

I can't figure out by what you said if you uninstalled Google by mistake or what. If it's just acting up, you can go to your control panel and uninstall it and reinstall it correctly. But if you feel uncomfortable doing that, and if you bought it at Best Buy, take it in and let them solve the problem. I don't think they'll charge you if you bought any kind of warranty.

I have a few questions for you thoughtful people. Do you think that decisions are made in this country before consequences of the decision are carefully studied? The bailout is most likely one of those decisions.

One is the use of these new energy saver light bulbs. I have tried to change to using them even though I can't see anything anymore. Also there is this danger of their putting dangerous mercury into our environment. There is nothing on the box warning of this or how to dispose of them properly. What good will it be if we save energy and die of mercury poisoning.

Another is this change to digital. I just heard this week that the LCD tvs use much more energy than a standard tv and the plasma tvs use 300 times the energy. What will we do with all the standard tvs that people will discard?

Also since I have to use a external antenna to get local channels, not yet on satelitte, every time I move I lose all reception. I have a great picture when it is there.

I am starting to think these decisions were made just to make money. Maybe we could get Gordo on this project.

  144. Right now this is back to being just a problem of not having my old toolbar"

Patsi, In that case, just place your cursor over the shaded area that is the tool bar section and right click. You should then see a drop down menu, and one of them 'should' say google tool bar. Left click on it, and it should recheck it and it should reappear as one of your toolbars. You can't hurt anything by doing this.

"Senator Clinton Reintroduces The Paycheck Fairness Act"
"WASHINGTON, DC –Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton today reintroduced her landmark legislation to address the continuing pay gap between women and men. The Paycheck Fairness Act would take critical steps to help empower women to negotiate for equal pay, to create strong incentives for employers to obey the existing laws, and to strengthen federal outreach and enforcement efforts. Twenty-two senators have joined Senator Clinton as original cosponsors of the legislation. Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) has introduced the bill in the House of Representatives."

  149. Mitch Albom talked about going to see the new Clint Eastwood movie "Gran Torino". He said that after the movie ended, people sat through all of the credits. The last three words of the credits were "Made in Michigan". He said that received a loud applause from the audience.

You can recycle your compact fluorescents at Home Depot, but LEDs are about to make their entrance into the wider world . LED light is a game changer. It's clean, they last for thousands of hours more than either of the current bulbs. And they use as little as 5% of what an incandescent bulb that makes the same amount of light. I have LED grow lights running in my greenhouse.

I saw a little factoid the other day, Chinese electricity production was down 11 % in Dec. , and in light manufacturing, it was down 27% .
    (Read toy & sneaker makers)
This economic Katrina is currently forming a much bigger eye wall in Asia. The Chinese have never done this before, that is to say, they have never had a good ole' fashion bust. We on the other hand invented boom and bust. It's in our blood.
My remarks about wages were just the next shoe to drop. As prices collapse because of reduced demand, wages are under tremendous pressure. This comes in reduced hours, as well as out right pay cuts.
This is of course only happens , if you're lucky enough to still have a job.
As wages shrink, people spend even less, the spiral picks up speed.

I have my miss givings as well when we get up a head steam, and stampede down the hill. But on the other hand, the prototype for the P-51 Mustang was done in 100 days.

As for the Shinbone Star, what am I going to do when the heirs of John Ford come after me ?

  152. Good morning all-
Congrats to Craig! Not surprised that despite winning the popular vote, Olbermann was somehow able to rationalize another victor.

Craig, Judging reading from most reading everyones' holiday posts it seems that all Clinton supporters are making an effort to support the upcoming administration. That being said, the sexism during the election was undeniable and still strikes a nerve with Clinton supporters and even non supporters of Palin. Sadly, one poster in particular lacks any sensitivity and sense of sportsmanship. Yesterdays attempt to marginalize the impact of the c word is a fine example. Unfortunately I would expect the discussion to remain insufferably boring until the time that he refrains from gloating, goading and putting forth misogynistic comments.

Ct- Great questions, didn't know about the mercury nor the higher use of electricity on the new tv's.

  153. I did not cheat on the vote, love Craig, but wouldn't empty my cookies for him. Aside from not being a cheater, I'd lose too many valuable websites.

Jamie- I hope you are high and dry!

  154. Cbob- Is it true that the new TVs use much more energy than the old ones and if so, how could this have happened?

    CBob,

Claim fair use and include links to John Ford, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence and Dorothy Johnson who wrote the original story. They get the money and you keep your well earned glory.
