Sworn in today as Barack Hussein Obama, the President's very name represents a dramatic difference compared to all of his predecessors. As the nation's first African-American in the White House, he fulfills a generation of dreams inspired by the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision. His inaugural address recalled, and in some cases, repeated the rhetoric of his most memorable campaign speeches.
An overwhelming desire for change, combined with Obama's uniqueness as a presidential prospect during the campaign, allowed him to keep his vision of change somewhat vague until and including his inaugural address. Voters were so desperate for something different that Obama simply was not pressed for specifics. And the news media was so enamored with him that they too did not push for details about how he would govern.
Obama must fill in the blanks once the excitement and newness of his presidency wear off. Then it will be time for his vision to become real, testing whether he can deliver.
There were clues about Obama's world view in one of his books, "The Audacity of Hope." In a chapter entitled, "The World Beyond our Borders," Obama wrote about wanting to end what he considered a long period of divisiveness among Americans about how to conduct ourselves around the world. He described how Reagan's policies disturbed him at a time when he was coming of age as a political activist.
"Looming perhaps largest of all was Ronald Reagan, whose clarity about communism seemed matched by his blindness regarding other sources of misery in the world. I personally came of age during the Reagan presidency - I was studying international affairs at Columbia, and later working as a community organizer in Chicago - and like many Democrats in those days I bemoaned the effect of Reagan's policies toward the Third World: his administration's support for the apartheid regime of South Africa, the funding of El Salvador's death squads, the invasion of tiny, hapless Grenada. The more I studied nuclear arms policy, the more I found Star Wars to be ill conceived; the chasm between Reagan's soaring rhetoric and the tawdry Iran-Contra deal left me speechless."
Obama's determination and ability to present a different face to the rest of the world will likely be a trademark of his presidency. If the change he campaigned for means anything, changing America's image in the eyes of the rest of the world is sorely needed.
In a speech to an estimated crowd of 200,000 in Berlin, Germany during the presidential campaign, Obama put soaring words to the tangible thoughts that he expressed about foreign policy in his book. It was an audacious act. Here is where John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan had made history with resounding speeches.
Obama matched his eloquence with his ideas and his personal experience in a clear call for a new and different future, calling for many specific changes, from a renewed fight against global warming to offers of real solutions for ravaged Third World nations. And that is what vision means.
"I know that I don't look like the Americans who've previously spoken in this great city. The journey that led me here is improbable. My mother was born in the heartland of America, but my father grew up herding goats in Kenya. . . . At the height of the Cold War, my father decided, like so many others in the forgotten corners of the world, that his yearning - his dream - required the freedom and opportunity promised by the West. And so he wrote letter after letter to universities all across America until somebody, somewhere answered his prayer for a better life. That is why I'm here. And you are here because you too know that yearning. This city, of all cities, knows the dream of freedom. ... This is the moment when we must give hope to those left behind in a globalized world. ... People of Berlin - and people of the world - the scale of our challenge is great. The road ahead will be long. But I come before you to say that we are heirs to a struggle for freedom. We are a people of improbable hope. With an eye toward the future, with resolve in our hearts, let us remember this history, and answer our destiny, and remake the world once again."

Accept for the singular importance of the occasion, if I was ranking inaugurations I would place this one third behind Kennedy's and Clinton's.
Perhaps my ranking is the result of the extremely high expectations that had been raised in recent weeks.
The surprising highpoint was the invocation. And the benediction is also moving.
My absolute best to our new President and all those who will help him steer our country.

Pogo you mean Reverend Lowery? He's truly honorable isn't he? A far cry from Rev. Wright. It was a great choice.
Flatus I am too young to know President Kennedy's inauguration. I was 1 year old. I loved what I saw of the Clinton inauguration, but a severe winter wind, rain and snow storm hit Western Washington and we lost power for 4 days. Local republicans said it was a message from God. I suggested it was a message that our electrical infrastructure needed improvement.
It is interesting to see that the main complainers re: President Obama, have decided to sit this discussion out... I can understand that; I didn't participate in anything that was Bush related.

Ha! Fox News "joking" about whether Obama is really prez since Roberts flubbed the lines of the oath.
Only 4 kleenexes (kleenex? kleenexi?) for me.
Loved the benediction! Could have done without Rick Warren who clearly loves the spotlight.
Thought Maya Angelou's 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' poem was much more powerful than today's offering, but she has the gift of a distinctive voice.
I think Obama is what the country needs, even though I still think he's still an unknown quantity.
Could people, not just women, but people have been as excited if a woman had been elected? Will they be as excited when it happens? Somehow, I don't see men,or even some women, of being very supportive no matter what her qualifiications & ideas.
I'm glad President Obama called for personal responsibily, accountability & transparency. We shall see how well the call is answered.
In fashion: It would be easy to go with Aretha's hat as the best, but I gotta give it to Bush 41.

The Shocking Secrets That Could Destroy Obama's Presidency!
"It's the story every American needs to read! Barack Obama is hiding eight shocking secrets that could destroy his presidency before it even gets off the ground, political insiders say. In a blockbuster Special Report, insiders rip the lid off the scandals about where Obama was REALLY born, his sex life, drug abuse and the mysterious past he's hiding from the world. The new President has artfully dodged some of the most serious questions ever posed to a Commander-in-Chief. But top political leaders are demanding answers NOW - and the mounting pressure could trigger a firestorm that will bring down his administration. Don't miss a single word - only in GLOBE!"

So, Paster Warren is only praying for Christians. Nice job, doofus.
CJ Roberts -- a self-described "original text" man, makes up his own words to the oath. I think he was doing it without notes. Nice job, doofus.
Two Republicans, two screw ups.
On a day when I'm trying to be ecumenical--more that Pastor Warren (but that's not hard to do), why am I constantly humming "ding dong the wicked witch is dead"?
And I found myself standing, alone, singing out loud, the National Anthem. Crying. Whodathunkit?
Question: Do you think the National Archives demanded that Michelle wear gloves when handling the Lincoln Bible?

Personal experience, combined with the consumption of way too many Sex and the City episodes, has taught me that one of the easiest gigs in the world is to be the next boyfriend after a bad one. Someone tell the nitwits at Fox that it's the doctrine of invited error - you can't rely on an error you created to overturn the result. They (the republican mouthpiece) can't assert that Obama is not legitimately president when the error they cite was created by the Republican Chief Jusctice. (Yeah, yeah, I know they were just trying to be cute, but fuhchrissakes, already).
Posted by: pogo | January 20, 2009 2:23 PM
I agree that Rev. Warren should keep Christ in Christmas and out of government sanctioned prayer, but he at least prefaced those remarks by saying something along the lines of that being a personal thing. Again, it would have been better if he took a more ecumenical approach.
On the other hand, the evangelicals in my family would probably have never forgiven him, if didn't find a way to sneak Jesus into the party.

Be true..... Had Warren done anything different then off we go to the wrong start as Rick was being Rick – what would you want?
The choice was Barack's - Ask Now President elect why his choice was that of Rev Warren's as obvious he must have agreement with him – unless this is still a campaign?
The Benediction was the divisive offering that comes from pages showing old history and did not fully reflect the spirit and reality of today.

As for Michelle's ensemble, wish she would get a more thoughtful stylist or designer. There is always something almost there but just not right, as with the silly bow flying in the breeze or her red dress at the convention. Someone isn't doing her justice, Pear shaped figures can dress just as well as any others, if they know how.

Craig, of course we mere humans who don't get to attend inaugurations and things only see the pomp - and I'd say Obama's oath gaffe is not such a huge deal - and it was set up by Roberts who was searching his memory for the words. That said, I'm sure Lettermanand Leno will have a field day with it.

Lampe, I believe the line was "... and whites embrace the right" or "what's right" - something to that effect. Like it or not, his words are more right than wrong.

Today, unfortunately, a ‘Usurper,’ Obama, takes the oath of office as President and every law he signs and appointment he makes will be void. It is regretful that Obama has permitted this to happen as he knows he is ‘not natural born’ and this is the greatest ‘Hoax’ ever placed upon the citizens of the United States of America in 230 years.”
Berg continued, “I am committed to keeping our efforts going to continue litigation until the truth of Obama being ‘not qualified’ for President comes out. There is nothing more important than ‘our’ U.S. Constitution and we will fight on!”

Ping,
My boss had the same reaction to the benediction that you did; missing the theme of the day, looking backward instead of forward. Those are legitimate arguments, but I'm pretty sure they're coming from two guys, who were looking for something to complain about.
Unfortunately, the easy rhyme with white was right. Perception is reality. Those who were offended by the line, have a right to say so.

LOL - continued reference to Quixotic attempt to derail a duly elected (now) President by a hack using the "form the image in your mind and repeat your goal over and over and it will eventually become reality" school.. The old saying used to be "anyone with $25 can file a lawsuit." Of course it costs considerably more now - a dollar not being worth what it once was.

the Benediction is a small matter - it was not with the moment of the day - but I am not in the same paridigm as the author. It is more a case of sadness that the Rev did not confirm the day but yet his choice was to remain in the past - but that is why it was the benediction - the ending.
Lets hope all can move on!

Obama gave the correct form. The Chief Justice did it backwards.
The President Elect becomes President with or without the oath at exactly 12 Noon. That they did it late has no bearing as long as he swore to uphold the Constitution which he did.
Posted by: Jamie
| January 20, 2009 5:16 PM
Renee, no, CNN was ot wrong - the two events can co-exist. He became president at noon, but he couldn't do anything (arguably) as the President until he took the oath. Listening to preachers and singers shouldn't have been a problem.
Ping, I'm not Craig (and Craig is on his knees thanking his lucky stars for that) but a couple of terms that may be what you are searching for come to mind: "substantial compliance" is the most likely (although that is a term used in contract dispute contexts) or "aquiescence" - which is what we will be doing as we accept Obama as the president irrespective of his and Roberts' flubs of the oath.

But is does say that he is President at noon no matter what.
Posted by: Jamie
| January 20, 2009 5:29 PM
the 20th amendment fixes the date and time upon which the outgoing president's term is normally terminated, and the beginning time, date of the incoming president's term. It does not formalize the oath or mention it at all. If the requirement weren't in the Constitution that the oath must be taken before the president "enter on the Execution of his office" you could argue that the 20th makes the oath a mere formality. But it is in the constitution, so mere formality or not (and it's not) - it's a prerequisite to exercising executive power. What there is is no requirement that the oath be recited absolutely verbatim without any deviation. Perhaps that challenge will be raised by the wingnuts. God, I hope not.

The Chief Justice put the word "faithfully" in the wrong order in a sentence and President Obama said it the way it was supposed to be said and they had a couple of seconds going back and forth on the order before the completion of the oath.
An awful lot of noise about very few words when the absolute meaning was completely clear.

Ping, sua sponte is just a court acting on its own initiative (as opposed to in response to a motion or other request of a party).
As usual, there's a split of authority among those here, and of course the one with nothing but an opinion (like the rest) is loudly asserting the others are wrong. Here's the deal - he's right - succession is automatic (note that I mentioned that above, mentioning that CNN was not incorrect when it said Obama assumed the presidency at noon) and he's wrong - the oath is a constitutional requirement stated as a condition precedent to exercising his powers as president. Two issues, related but separate, never tested (because there's never been any reason to) and never challenged. But since he doesn't read even what he writes ("The 20th Amendment makes the oath a formality." - which is his opinion, contrary to the language and intent of the amendment), and can't separate issues, who's surprised? We'll never know for sure, will we, (unless of course the next president does not take the oath after becoming president at noon on Jan. 20, 2008, or some subsequent president refuses to take the oath) since the "formalized" oath (whatever the hell that's supposed to mean) has been taken by every president who came before and since the passage of the 20th amendment in 1933, and Obama took the oath just today. And an amendment only changes existing provisions in the constitution that it specifically repeals or that cannot coexist with the amendment. (See Amendment XXI, for example). That is not the case here. Thanks, though for the lecture on constitutional interpretation, which is correct to a point, but inapplicable. No one seriously believes that Lyndon Johnson was not president upon Kennedy's death until he took the oath of office on the plane on the way back to DC or that Andrew Johnson was not president the moment Lincoln died - but both somehow felt they must take the oath - one before and one after the 20th Amendment was passed. The fact that the passage of the 20th has not affected the process of taking the oath of office suggests that it was not meant to amend the oath clause. Please show me a constitutional scholar who believes the oath is a mere formality now but was not so before 1933, much as I respect the opinion of techno geeks about the interpretation of the constitution. Or show me a president (other than Bush, of course) who did not believe that the oath was a requirement of his office after Oct 15, 1933 rather than a mere formality. Then I might take your drivel a little more seriously. Ignore him, Animal - you are correct on this issue.
Posted by: pogo | January 20, 2009 6:06 PM
Sorry, Craig, nothing says the oath has to be taken at noon on the 20th. But you and Joe can have a beer and whistfully talk about "what if . . ."
You went to law school - I bet in Conlaw you even talked about the Kennedy/Johnson succession - we did. Our Conlaw prof said that under his reading of the constitution (aha - can reasonable minds differ?) the office of the president is never (or at least never had been) empty. Of course his only real interest in the Constitution was the erosion of 4th, 5th and 6th amendment rights after Miranda, so what did he know anyway?

Pogo,
As to the dustup about the term vs. the oath, I agree that in order for a President to begin performing the duties of the office, the President must take the oath as stated in Article 2.
Article 2 clearly states that the President "shall" take the oath--which we know when the word "shall" is stated in laws, regulations, etc is a "mandatory" requirement".
The 20th Amendment sets the "term" of the Presidency--it "shall" begin at noon on the 20th of January, officially the President begins his term in
office, however, the oath is also required to commence the duties of the office.

"But, what can one expect, from a man whose very "candidacy" is so clearly an affront to the U.S. Constitution? Let us recite the temerity involved. 1. Obama was born a citizen of the United Kingdom, by direct, patrilineal inheritance. 2. He has hidden whatever actual and evidentiary documentation exists, of his place of birth. 3. He has even refused to provide any record, or lack thereof, of naturalization into U.S. Citizenship after it was cancelled by his Indonesian citizenship as a youth. The overriding evidence indicates that Barack Obama is clearly not a natural born Citizen of the United States of America, of which he has assumed the presidency. The collection of evidence so far, indicates he is not a U.S. Citizen at all."

Get over it, Lampe. GWB is responsible for whatever disrespect for the office of President exists, primarily due to him sending our nation to war with lies as justification. Blame him.
Posted by: champ | January 20, 2009 7:40 PM
See that is what is making it real hard for some people to get behind Obama. Like it or not GWB was and will always be one of our Presidents. And, exactly what kind of message does that send to young people? It's okay in America, to disrespect a President or it's okay for one President to show disrespect for another. I really don't think that will go over with some Republicans. So much for Obama's working together.

I am not defending The Bush Legacy: What I am defending ,is that as a President he is entitled to not be boo'd at. And Obama ran on the Hope of Change, how is that being above petty politics, if his remarks about the out going President are disrespectful?
Posted by: Lampe | January 20, 2009 8:00 PM
I thought the speech was good.
I could have used a bit more inspiration though.
More of a focus could have been placed on Democracy and Freedom.
Freedom allowed him to become the President he is.
And Democracy allowed us to elect him.
A symbol to people all over the world that are oppressed by governments that subjugate and destroy instead of serve and protect.
A victory for diversity. Diversity of race, color, creed - political phisophy, region . . . joining together by a unified vision of change for the better.
People don't expect much from their government. But we all have the sense that things could be better.
I do think Obama made a great point about:
"the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works . . . . "
Everybody gets caught up in the battle to lead us to a better place instead of actually getting us there.
Great ideas are at war with great ideas - instead of a pragmatic realization of good ideas. One step at a time.

Uh, yeah... that was all bullshit. And why don't you get a transcript of the speech and find out for yourself what was said? Obama's a pretty smooth operator, I highly doubt he said anything intentionally disrespectful.

I have no idea what the cause is, but Carter has gone out of his way on several ocassions to be rude to Clinton. Even when all the ex presidents gathered, he stood off to the side as if he didn't like his placement next to Clinton.

Actually, I thought the WHOLE event went off well. Typical for Dems, anyhow. But can you just imagine trying to get and getting all the pieces of this all day production up and running? It's hard enough to get 2 people to do anything in a timely manner much less thousands, and hundreds of thousands of 'visitors' out in the cold.
Too bad about Kennedy and the seizure. But at least he made it there today.
I feel very hopeful after hearing Obama's speech. At least for today. But one day is better than NO days for the past 8 years.

Lampe, normally I like your curiosity and spunk and mostly like what you write but as "citizens" we have a "duty" to question our chosen leaders. Nowhere in any document have I ever seen that we have to "respect" them or the office they temporarily hold. Respect is earned.
There are many criminal statutes and civil laws that deal with crimes and torts but "respect" is not one I'm familiar with.
As I wrote above I usually like what you write but respect an office, a title, I don't think so. Maybe you're just too nice?
Respect you parents (if they are good to you)--that's my rule for what it's worth.

It was a grand day, Lowery's benediction will be remembered more fondly than Obama's dull-as-dishwater speech.
I never though I'd live to see it, but I did...what could possibly surprise me now? Nothing.
I could not have possibly seen JFK's inaugural speech on live TV cuz I was a little schoolboy, but I have seen it so many times on video it seems like I was there...I thought Obama might try to top it, but instead he toned it all down, just rattled a saber or two, and let it go at that...hell, Obama gave Berlin supporters a better show/speech!

I found a little bit about it: shown below. Carter has said that today he had spoken to the Clintons before those pictures were taken and he was just trying to get to as many people as possible. Probably some truth on both sides.
"Relations between the Carters and the Clintons have reportedly been frosty for years, dating back to 1980, when Carter’s landslide defeat to Ronald Reagan may have cost Clinton the Arkansas governor’s mansion.
In the 90s Clinton was said to resent some of Carter’s freelance diplomacy. Carter, for his part, spared no criticism of Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal."

There is a difference between like and respect. That's usually only come up at work. Whether or not you like your boss at work, you should at least have some respect. I've seen that mainly with plant managers. Saw them standing in front of us talking while people carried on conversations with others, not paying any attention. That's kinda rude. We got warned about that one time. They said people were going to be watching us to make sure we weren't being overly rude. I remember one night our plant manager was talking to us and some guy walked right in front of him and said, "What's up, Jim?" The plant manager said something to the guy about interrupting him. The guy said, "I don't care. I'm quitting this place soon." The plant manager asked him to go up to his office right then. I thought to myself, "This guy is trying to be funny, but he's just making himself look like an ass."

I will say now that I was wrong and Bush\Cheney did not enact Martial Law.
I still believe that if they had feared being labeled Enemy Combatants under the MCA of 2006 by now President Obama than they would not have stepped down peacefully.
Under the very law that Bush\Cheney was given by members of both Houses of Congress they could have been arrested and detained indefinitely. They could have been accountable for all their crimes against Our Country as well as the War Crimes they instituted, authorized and condoned.
Since it appears that they will never be held accountable here in America they stepped down without invoking Martial Law though they are still under liable under International Law and could be arrested if they set foot on foreign soil.
God I pray they travel overseas.
And least we forget that it was not only Republicans, but some Democrats as well who were guilty by there silence or voting for many of the laws and powers that the Bush\Cheney administration were given.

GREENVILLE — Former President Bill Clinton said today that he would take Senator Barack Obama up on his challenge last night to prove himself as the first black president by entering a dance competition — against Mr. Obama.
Mr. Obama was asked at last night’s debate whether Mr. Clinton was “the first black president,” as Toni Morrison, the novelist, has said. Mr. Obama replied that he would first have to see whether Mr. Clinton can dance before calling him a brother. It was a brief moment of levity in a contentious slug-fest of a debate with Senator Hillary Clinton and former Senator John Edwards.

AC...
Maybe not in the same league, however he also used torture IIRC.
We must also assume that if the economy collapsed a year ago and the worse that is still to come had happened then the people would have taken to the streets.
He would have had to invoke Martial Law to stop the people from going after those responsible and running them out of town after taring and feathering them.
That's my thoughts on this matter even if many here disagree with me. I pray that both Bush and Cheney travel overseas as it appears that we won't be the ones to prosecute them for War Crimes.
So much for the Rule of Law. They have been placed Above the Law so do we still have a Constitutional Democracy?
Since the very foundation of Our Constitution is based on the Rule of Law once one is placed above it we no longer have a Democracy except in our minds and not in reality.
That's it for me tonight. I just wanted to admit that I was wrong about him invoking Martial Law, something you will not find Republicans doing. They never admit to being wrong and never accept responsibility for any of their actions.
Good night.

Hey Solar
Always nice to read you.I feel for your growing up years and we all have issues with parents or family of some kind.I really appreciate you talking about yours.I had issues with my Dad for being a drunk and never really being there for the family in any real way emotionally but he was a good provider and we never went without the basics so i forgave too.I think a couple of people here feel threatened by the way you connect with folks so honestly without being stuffy, they long to be who you are but will never get there because they have little if any compassion..Just my opinion...Hope your all healed up...

Oath flub merits a do-over, scholars say
Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
(01-20) 17:03 PST Washington- -- Several constitutional lawyers said President Barack Obama should, just to be safe, retake the oath of office that Chief Justice John Roberts flubbed.
The 35-word oath is explicitly prescribed in the Constitution, Article II, Section One, which says the president "shall" take the oath "before he enteron the execution of his office." It was discussed during the Constitutional Convention.
Roberts misplaced the word "faithfully," at which point Obama paused quizzically, and then Roberts corrected himself, but then Obama repeated the words as Roberts initially said them.
The oath reads: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
A do-over "would take him 30 seconds, he can do it in private, it's not a big deal, and he ought to do it just to be safe," said Boston University constitutional scholar and Supreme Court watcher Jack Beermann. "It's an open question whether he's president until he takes the proper oath."

The Obots should read/hear what some of the "Defenders of The Constitution" have to say about Obots and SoetorObama, What I post is very mild in comparison. He is Constitutionally ineligible for POTUS. We now have an illegitimate Executive Branch. The Patriotic lawyers are preparing to challenge everything.
Posted by: GORDO | January 20, 2009 10:56 PM
Charles Cooper, head of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel under President Ronald Reagan, said the oath is mandatory, that an incorrect recitation should be fixed and that he would be surprised if the oath hadn't already been re-administered.
Jonathan Turley, a constitutional law professor at George Washington University, was hosting an inauguration party at his home in McLean, Va., Tuesday and did a mock swearing-in of 35 children. When Roberts erred, one child shouted: "That's not right!"
"He should probably go ahead and take the oath again," Turley said. "If he doesn't, there are going to be people who for the next four years are going to argue that he didn't meet the constitutional standard. I don't think it's necessary, and it's not a constitutional crisis. This is the chief justice's version of a wardrobe malfunction."

Carter gave the Clintons plenty of trouble about Whitewater (A scandal "invented" by the NYT's Jeff Gerth -- sometimes working out of Clinton-hater Sheffield Nelson's law office.). Carter's statements helped force the naming of an Independent Council.
Posted by: GORDO | January 20, 2009 11:34 PM
Along with Senator Moynihan. I remember seeing him on MTP -- he couldn't keep his mouth shut about Whitewater. I followed the Whitewater story in great detail. The Clinton-haters wanted an IC so they could go on a "fishing expedition". But I would not expect any of you to understand what happened. How could you?
Posted by: GORDO | January 21, 2009 12:22 AM
i hate to be a stickler for something as trivial as the Constitution, but that oath was simply not legal. john roberts should be impeached for misfeasance of the first order. it was disgraceful. it doesn't take Gordo to figure that out folks. even Rehnquist on mind-altering meds managed to get the job done without such inexcusable incompetence.

If there had not been a Whitewater investigation -- Gore would have won an overwhelming victory in 2000. The Repubs would not have been able to steal the WH. Think about that -- no GWB.
You don't understand what happened during those years and NOW.

Obama said that both he and Roberts, were nervous and that they both had made mistakes." I'm sure it has already been taken care of. do you really think after all Pelosi and The Gang did to get him elected, they are going to let something like this screw them up?
Posted by: Lampe | January 21, 2009 1:19 AM
One investigation led to another -- I followed all the "scandals". Can remember Bill Clinton's lawyer (Bob Bennett) expressing outrage that Starr had gotten involved in the Paula Jones case. The anti-Clinton lawyers were working together to tarnish the Clintons -- knowing it would damage Gore. You don't understand the Lewinsky story, either. Do some research.
