How interesting that the two most high-profile campaign allies for Barack Obama who later failed to benefit from his success just happened to be on Bill and Hillary Clinton's enemies list.
It is no secret that Bill Clinton was furious at Bill Richardson and Caroline Kennedy for their endorsements of Obama in the bruising Democratic nomination race. And both ended up out of the running for big jobs, thanks in part to a vigorous whispering campaign against them.
Richardson's campaign endorsement of Obama ignited Bill Clinton because the former president had agreed to headline a fundraiser for the New Mexico governor and claims that he had extracted a promise from his former Cabinet member that if he did not endorse Hillary, he would not endorse at all. And when Caroline and her uncle, Ted Kennedy, signaled intentions to endorse Obama, the former president personally and emotionally lobbied them to hold off.
While Richardson's defection was an embarrassment to his former boss, the Kennedy endorsements were especially hurtful to Hillary's presidential campaign, sparking an obsessive news media crusade to present Obama as the heir to the famous family's legacy. (Given the poor reception Caroline got in New York political circles for her Senate ambitions, you have to wonder why so many in the 2008 campaign press corps thought her Obama endorsement should be given such incredible weight.)
Almost at the moment that Obama announced he would appoint Richardson to his Cabinet, the emails and blog hints started, raising questions about ethics and personal life. Richardson eventually withdrew his name from consideration, citing the pressure on him from a federal investigation into whether his administration rewarded a campaign donor with millions in state contracts.
Obama had no official connection to Kennedy's pursuit of an appointment to the U.S. Senate, but it was his pick of Hillary for Secretary of State that vacated the New York seat. Clinton aides were at the forefront in the early griping about Caroline. And today we learned that a former Clinton White House official -- U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand -- got the Senate appointment.
Other than a few partial fingerprints, there is no hard evidence that the Clintons actively sought revenge -- but they certainly had motive and opportunity. At the very least, they must be smiling about how things turned out.

Craig...and the corollary to that rule is that every White House press corps pitches a hissy fit with every incoming president just to show who's boss. Lots of people assume "the press" that covered Obama's campaign is the same that will cover him now. While there is some overlap and many of the reporters from the trail will now be in the WH Press Room, the culture of the White House corps is a thing to be reckoned with in its own right. They're like a bunch of cranky old grampas who have to have their metamucil served just the right way at just the right time every day.

Jack, That was not my intention at all. The big problem is the one that has always existed, the balance between moving from one culture to another without losing the old in the process of embracing the new.
While a good percentage of ESL students do manage in spite of the system, the total emersion groups seem to have a much lower drop out rate and a much higher success rate. Unless ESL is paired with an active family intervention literacy program, a very high percentage of students leave school without even a high school diploma and too poor a grasp of the English language to succeed in that market.
This is what I meant by having a civilized discussion of the pros, cons, and consequences, but your immediate response was to leap to the negative and the accusatory without actually talking.

No one disputes the fact that Rutnik was a 25 percent partner with Bruno, Bruno's brother, and another lobbyist in First Grafton Corporation, a development firm that was planning to build luxury homes in Grafton, where the senator lived. The wife of a wealthy businessman, Jared Abbruzzese, whose myriad connections to Bruno have the continuing focus of the probe, wind up buying a 12 acre plot from the Bruno/Rutnik partnership. Bruno's son Ken also bought a plot and built his own home there. Ken Bruno, then the District Attorney for Rensselaer County, subsequently became a lobbyist and had at least one of the same clients as Rutnik, Madison Square Garden

Some of the interesting current debate within the Army from Tom Ricks blog
"Yingling is unusual but not alone in being willing to speak out about the flaws of the leaders of the U.S. military. Once you have seen buddies be killed or maimed in Iraq on your first, second, and third tours there, you tend to realize that war is too important to be left to the generals. Yingling knows what he is getting into: In 2007, he got a lot of notice for an article he wrote asking why American generals weren't held accountable for their failures in Iraq. "A private who loses a rifle suffers far greater consequences than a general who loses a war," he concluded.
In his Quantico talk he explains, among other things, why the U.S. Army in Iraq has improved dramatically while the "institutional Army" back here hasn't.
But let him tell it. "

Jack, people in the Army are very hard on themselves. They constantly try to make things better. Every one of his thoughts have been expressed time after time by people at the operational level in every war.
The Army equipment used for the Iraq War was conceptualized fully twenty years earlier. It takes that long to actually have people in the field equipped and trained with their equipment. Most of the time is in the incredibly long acquisition cycle. But, from the time the conceptualization to operational capability is spent developing tactics at every operational level for using the equipment against the threats expected to be presented by the opposition.
The validity of this approach was confirmed by the incredibly swift initial campaign in Iraq. In other words, we could kill everything in sight without difficulty. The subsequent problems were caused by all the fallout from not following Gen Shinseki's advice as to the size of the occupation force.

Fox News' Carl Cameron and Bonney Kapp reported that they had "been told" that "a vendor at Invesco Field found the flags, which were going to be thrown out, and turned them over to the McCain campaign."
The Democratic convention official says that's not true.
"It's pretty reprehensible on their part," he said. "Someone made an assumption, took the flags, and essentially lied about what was going to happen to them. I mean, c'mon, we were never ever going to throw out flags."
Emails to three McCain spokespersons inquiring where the flags were found and how the McCain campaign obtained them were not returned.

Matthews is making me crazy again. Today's show about the music heard at the Inauguration over the speakers being recorded. "It was too cold for the musicians to play up to their standard" WRONG!!!!
They played without the instruments being miked and used a pre recorded tape for the speaker system, but they didn't do that because it was too cold for the musicians. They did it because it was too cold for the musical instruments to hold their tuning. Those close to the players could hear both Perlman and Yo Yo Ma and the speakers. As it was the piano was a mess because of the cold.

The Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 1338 and S.766) was introduced March 6, 2007 by Sen. Hillary Clinton and Rep. Rosa DeLauro to strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The bill expands damages under the Equal Pay Act and amends its very broad fourth affirmative defense. In addition, the Paycheck Fairness Act calls for a study of data collected by the EEOC and proposes voluntary guidelines to show employers how to evaluate jobs with the goal of eliminating unfair disparities. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives on July 31, 2008.

Solar, Enough already. Both of you need to put a brake of some kind between your brain and your fingers. The first thing you think to say is not always the best one to type and certainly not the best one to hit submit.

I hope so.
The wife told me this evening that her company believes that they will channel a lot of money through existing contracts by raising the limits of the contracts.
Most of these large federal contracts don't give you work but give you the right to go after work. Then you get a task order for a job where the money is negotiated.
I wonder if they will do something similar with grants. If you have an existing program with a federal grant then you would find it easy to extend and expand your program.
It is something to think about as you put a team together.

A great HRC story is making the blog rounds. It seems that HRC and John Croynen, the Texas senator that put a hold on the clinton vote, were seen having a heated discussion. She was heard telling him "Clintons don't forget" The up shot is the senator withdrew his objections and voted for Clinton.
I said something to the wife about HRC collecting senators balls on her belt. The wife said women don't do that. then she grinned and said "we make wind chimes. Just hang them out and watch them sway in the breeze."
Check out this great Hillary blog "Madam Secretary" over on the Foriegn policy web site

You can use any names you want, but "turd boy" is sooo vulgar.

Re: Caroline Kennedy and David Patterson. Patterson came across as a total politically inept amateur. He wasted much precious time telling everyone that no decision had been made and then it comes out he had decided for Caroline but just wanted to keep the suspense going (presumably to enhance his own political ambitions -- yuck) !!

Thanks ok with my niece. Sister and my Mother are very upset. Anna, my first niece, is very calm.

An ex-colleague of mine from Minnesota had ovarian cancer a couple years ago. Now they found a brain tumor and she just had surgery. Everyone is hopeful. Of course now comes the chemo...

Belgians are shocked over the stabbings in the baby creche (day care center) one infant is dead, another small child is also dead, many babies stabbed and the main "house mother" stood between the man and the babies and she tried to fight him off, but he stabbed and killed her. She was 55. The psychopath is literally one. He was apparently dressed up in a sort of "THE JOKER" costume. He is well known as an unbalanced person apparently and is under psychiatric care. It has come out that he had many knives and after he peddled away leisurely from the first day care, he was planning to ride 3 kilometers and kill others.

Another sadness ...
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2167144.ece
One mother arrived with a bassinet to retrieve her baby but sadly her child was one of the two who died from their wounds. What is even more sad about this situation is that she tried for years to get pregnant and finally had the baby she always wanted. I don't know her, but I feel so sad for her and her family, friends and colleagues. There are 3 confirmed deaths 2 infants 3 to 6 months old, and the main staffer at the creche.
Distraught mother -- (I don't understand how a god of mercy and love would allow this sort of stuff to happen.

In my Military.com news letter
I think that some cuts can start by improving waste in all of government?
"Army's Unneeded Parts Worth Billions
The Army's inventory of spare parts for aircraft, vehicles and tanks swelled from $2.7 billion in fiscal 2004 to $4.1 billion in fiscal 2007, mostly because the way the service projected its need for such items was flawed"

Want to add to my post above
We are all having to adjust our way of living,,,less heat, less food, less $ to live on,,,maybe the new SOS can find out where there is room for cutting down expenses at all bases, facilities, ( leave all VA hospitals alone--improve them)
Do we really need all of what defense contractors are building,,etc etc?tens of billions could be saved,,,and spent on projects to create work for us?

How many civilians were killed in these air strikes? Odd no word on their deaths, and what has happened to the over used term, alleged, possible, so-called insurgents, terrorists etc? Where is the reported rioting on the Arab streets over these deaths? Change? Nothing has changed, except in the way it will now be reported.
