Overcoming Your Own Hype

No matter how cheesy the surroundings, Barack Obama has a way of elevating the moment. Give me a break -- Steve Carell, one of the goofiest comedians on the scene today quoting Thomas Jefferson???

And yet, Obama salvaged Hollywood's self-indulgent concert Sunday on the Lincoln  Memorial with a speech that Old Abe himself would admire.

"As I stand here today, what gives me the greatest hope of all is not the stone and marble that surrounds us, but what fills the spaces in between. It is you, Americans of every race and region and station, who came here because you believe in what this country can be and because you want to help us get there."

CQ Transcript: President-Elect Obama's Remarks at the Lincoln Memorial

  1. Did he read the quote seriously or was he being goofy? Do you have him so pigeonholed as a comedian that you can not see him as otherwise?

  2. "...who came here because you believe in what this country can be and because you want to help us get there..."

BHO forgot to add..."and because you want to see Beyonce, Bruce and Stevie in concert(and Steve Carell, too!!)...".

  4. HBO had a two hour compilation , excellent job. I enjoyed seeing it...I am a fan of U2 and Bruce, but see Beyonce was great, too...god, she's beautiful.
I recall a few years ago that Pete Seeger was in bad shape. He looked great Sunday, RUNNING off the stage, even. It was a good show, but Carell was a surprise!
I thought Mellencamp's "Little Pink Houses" was a poor song-choice...who the hell decided on that one?
This HAD to be the first time a President-elect and his wife both were so hip as to bop their heads in perfect timing with the music, too.

  5. oh...you had to love Bettye LaVette and Jon Bon Jovi singing together...I always loved the Sam Cooke tune they performed:
"I was born by the river
    In a little tent
Just like the river I've been runnin' ever since
It's been a long long time comin' but I know
Change gonna come, yes it will
It's been too hard livin' but I'm afraid to die
Cuz I don't know whats up there beyond the sky
It's been a long long time comin' but I know
Change gonna come, yes it will..."

I thought the Obama family looked adorable!! I was only slightly disturbed, when Barack and Michelle rose to their feet, in response to Jamie Foxx shouting, "Chi-town, stand up...". Biden looked mortified.

  7. garth brooks was a surprise... a pleasant surprising surprise. warmed up those poor freezing folks with some very "moving" gospel, all that stomping and waving got the blood circulating. but moving most of all was old song "this land is your land" (could see woody smiling down from heaven on that one). course you can't top that finale of "crown thy good with brotherhood"

  8. more timely phrases to note, considering this mess we're in:

  9. Soon the control of the show will be over and the real world will come flooding in.....
Soon we will discover which Barack is showing up.... and what will be show and what will be real....

How to deal with the un planned events that will indeed strike
    Which Barack and what capability...
How will the show go on?

  12. Wouldn't know because the concert wasn't televised. On PPV later?

Sooo tired of Spike Lee. Hey, Spike. The Obama girls could also see that anything is possible for them if a woman had been elected. And with the parents they have, I think they would know that they needed to study and be their best even if their parents were just lawyers. And now, only now, can young, black men see that anything is possible? Doctors, lawyers, astronauts. Hello. Just soooo tired of his whining.
What is he gonna whine about after tomorrow?

    by Katty Kay

"Obama's Presidency is unlikely to produce such fine pickings for the tabloids. Still, there is a more serious problem with treating Barack Obama as an elected monarch; one that affects us journalists, in particular. Put a man on a pedestal and suddenly it's hard for the press to drag him through the political wringer. It happened in 2003 in the run up to the invasion of Iraq and risks happening again."

  16. last paragraph of Wm Faulkner's nobel acceptance speech, Dec. 10, 1950

Until he relearns these things, he will write as though he stood among and watched the end of man. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simply because he will endure: that when the last dingdong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet's, the writer's, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.

    for entire speech:

All your talk of Scrabble - One of the best "play by email" sites is the Pixie Pit

    http://www.thepixiepit.co.uk/scrabble/index.htm

It is $12.00 per year, but worth it for the full 200 square boards (Super Scrabble) and the service with full maintenance of the boards, tracking of games, and no junk mail as a result of playing there.

You can play as many people as you want, but each new player needs to subscribe. I play with two people regularly (What do you mean it isn't a blood sport?)

  26. Hello from Harpers Ferry. Just popping in for a quick comment. Yesterday was awesome!!! I hate that word and rarely use it but it fits the bill this time. The concert was outstanding. We had a pretty good place to stand on the opposite end of the reflecting pool from the stage.

The speakers were mostly so-so, how much money did they have to donate to be allowed to speak? The music was fantastic, but the best part was the crowd. It was the bst behaved super large crowd I have ever been in. Everyone was dancing and singing and having a good time. I didn't think it was cold at all. Of ourse, I am coming from sub-zero temperatures, too. I wouldn't have missed this experience for the world.

Now, it is time to be off to my Congressman's office to pick up the swearing in tickets. I will be back later to tell you about the party last night.

  34. "...one of the goofiest comedians on the scene today quoting Thomas Jefferson???"

craig, is it being "goofiest" or "comedian" that bothers you? are there not a few of the former among the current folk you cover? and as to the latter, how will you handle a franken given the typical senate floor speech full of rhetorical ruffles and flourishes?

furthermore, i take umbrage at any hint that the quality of jefferson's words would not transcend the poorest delivery, even tho it were by a so-called goof. neither is this desparagement up to your usual standard of graciousness. disrespecting our fellow goofs (gooves?) disrespects us all :)
