With each new announcement of Barack Obama's choices for those who will help him govern, most seem to reinforce a pattern that defines his style. Call it Competent Change.
The sometimes radical feel of his campaign -- the hip poster art, web savvy outreach and appeals to anti-war voters -- led many who watched Obama's operation, and probably a lot of his supporters, to think that Washington was in for a sweeping overhaul run by outsiders.
Instead, Obama's idea of change seems to be less dramatic than advertised. But that does not mean that the status quo will be maintained. He is building a team that brings competence and experience to the work of making a difference.
Changing Washington from the inside requires players who actually know how the place works.

Why didn't Kerry get SOS?
Why didn't Brazile get the DNC chair?
Why isn't Dr. Dean getting Surgeon General?
No one's addressed these questions. Maybe you could.

craig, that was a mighty nice gesture by imus when he said he'll do everything he can to promote the book. he has a pretty good batting average when it comes to selling books.... now all you and helen have to do is get on oprah and jon stewart shows for a sure-fire best seller.

I have a theory that most songs are written while walking and hence have a "walk-beat"
steve martin used to do a riff in his show about how the banjo music was "Happy" music and it was impossible to be sad listening to banjo.....then would try to play some "sad" banjo.......but it applies to polka also..........

Early results show McCraigster with a HUGE LEAD in the OBlogger poll.....
Craig the only reason I went to the site was to cast a vote for you........ As I know you are the best choice.
It was a difficult situation for me to even allow my computer to access a KO site, and KO if you are reading this - which I doubt your arrogant self would avail – Please stick with the one thing you do not do well, stay away from football , As an Entertainer your best at what you do playing to a small crowd in your primary venue. Having a hack on Football coverage – I do not see the value! Other then making it the WORST.
Since voting and access a KO site I have defragged, Virus checked and had my computer sterilized from the inside out.
Vote for Craig…..

Sanjay Gupta was a good choice for SG. Why does Tucker think it's a pointless position? Look, Dr. Koop was the anti-smoking spokesmodel. And don't forget the nice lady who spoke of the thing of which most Americans are uncomfortable and who then had to resign her post. ~What was her name?~
Yeah, we don't need the gov't to play mommy, but given the shrinking world, lots of things effect us. The Obama admin will have someone collecting and disseminating info to them and, in turn, to the public.
Considering the state of the healthcare system & the number of chronic-but-preventable illnesses, I don't think SG is superfluous or even mommy-ish. It makes sense.

for those of you who do not ant to sully your machines with olber cookies, here are some excerpts from there:
"OlberBlogging Countdown Favorite MNBC News Pundit Poll has elicited an intense battle between two popular pundits and their fans.
The fighting supporters of Craig “CQ Trailmix” Crawford and Chris “The Fix” Cillizza gave our meek OlberBlogging site more than 600 hits in the last two days alone!
Because of the intense interest this poll has raised from the Countdown, cyberspace and newsroom community, OlberBlogging posts the Countdown Pundit Political Poll - Final Answer with the top four contenders: Cillizza, Crawford, Robinson, Silver.
Each candidate also may make a statement regarding his campaign and why Countdown fans should vote for him.
Craig Crawford submitted this statement:...."and
not condone any cookie meddling or other compromises of the integrity of the ballot box"
We will post other candidate statements as they are received (and we do know from whom they are sent).
Candidates and their supporters have until 12 midnight Friday to vote. After that we will announce the name of the OlberBlogging Countdown Favorite News Pundit. The winner will receive some prize thatwe have yet to imagine, but we’ll come up with something.
So, make sure you vote. Vote early. Vote Often
Enjoy! Vote Early, Vote Often."

Looking at all the Clinton people picked as the "insiders" on the team, it seems to be that Obama is doing something very smart. He is bringing back all the people who really wanted to "change" things from the last administration but were thwarted by a Republican Congress and the Clinton scandal, and given them a home in a new "change" administration where they might finally make things happen.

( 9: a.m.) I tape the them,,,and take them to my Mom when we visit her----she then tells me some history behind the songs,,,and the artist (my favorite is Javier Solis) this sometimes prompts her to tell me some story about her life on the ranch that my Grandfather had.....and the Mexican Polkas are great also,,,

powers' analysis "The Senate’s Making a Big Mistake on Burris" is powerfully incisive
"Just because they don’t like or don’t trust the person or the process by which a legally proper appointment is made is no legally principled reason at all. It’s not even clear that an indicted, impeached or convicted governor’s choice would be grounds enough to make such an action anything other than purely arbitrary as a matter of law, unless the offense for which sanction has been imposed is directly linked to the senate appointment. Show us a smoking gun and we might have a very different kind of issue to decide.
Moreover, the Senate relied on a legal fig leaf for the strongest part of its argument. The Illinois secretary of state is reported to have agreed, at Reid’s request, not to certify Burris’s appointment."

except , maybe, for the sos of Ill. not certifying Burris, it is all constitutional. Just because Burris is a Senator doesn't mean the Senate has to seat him. The constitution lets the senate makeup its own rules.
I am suprised that more Senators aren't standing up for tradition. Robert Byrd must be in realley bad shape.

Baloney at least resembles a meat product - none of the veggie poseurs did.

What bothers me is the apparent ease and willingness to completely forego the letter and intent of the constitution. Even more troubling is the public's "yawn response to all of this". The best I can tell, if Reid is following the rules of the Senate then there is no constitutional conflict. Reid is free to express his opinion to the SOS of Ill. and the Senate is constitutionally permitted to make rules for the seating of members and to expel any member for any reason from the body.
So nobody is breaking the constitution that I know of.
It is just one of those sloppy parts of the separation of powers that don't often get exposed.
It is politically stupid on the part of Reid and any of his supporters and Blagojevich has proved that he would make a better majority leader of the senate than Reid. He may be a corrupt politician but he has proven with this appointment that he can play with the best of them.

Let's be clear - this isn't about Burris. It is about Reid, the SEcretary of the SEnate, and Blago.
This is the power in question.
"Amendment 17
"(Ratified April 8, 1913)
"The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.
"When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.
"This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution. "
Reid is refusing to acknowledge the power of the governor of IL, granted him by the legislature of IL, pursuant to this amendment, to temporarily fill a vacancy. It further defines the qualifications that the Senate judges - along with residency and age requirements of Art. 1, Sect. 3. This is an Amendment to the Constitution affecting Art. 1, Sect. 3 & 5, which was subsequently passed and more specific than the general power granted by Art. 1. Sect. 5 to the Senate - And it is not power granted to the Majority Leader of the Senate. Any such power for the majority leader - or the Secretary of the Senate, for that matter - is pursuant to Senate Rules, which cannot diminish the requirements of the Constitution.
Notwithstanding the possibility that he may have improperly influenced the IL SoS to ignore his ministerial duty to certify the documents documenting Blago's appointment - pursuant to Art. 1, Sect. 3 and the 17th Amendment - of Burris, he has pretty clearly overstepped any constitutional authority granted him re: executive appointments to fill temporary vacancies in the Senate.
There's a difference between having a cow and pointing out cowsh*t. This is the latter.

"....response to Burris' request that the Illinois Supreme Court force White to sign Burris' Senate paperwork.
Madigan, representing White in her role as the state's chief legal officer, argued that the court should not order White to sign the appointment papers because Burris has "not identified any law requiring" that White must do so "because there is none." Further, Madigan asserts U.S. Senate rules do not require White's signature in order for Burris to be seated.
"The secretary has performed all of his legal duties regarding the Burris appointment. This court cannot compel the U.S. Senate to seat petitioner Burris. But nothing remains to be done by the secretary to complete the appointment process and to enable the U.S. senate to seat Burris," the filing stated."

Hah. this could come down to a clash between Senate rules and IL state law, If Madigan is correct about U.S. Senate Rules, there is no basis for requiring a state's SoS certification of the credentials documents and Reid was just making it all up, got the Secretary of the Senate to go along with the scam, and is now being left out to dry. His little box keeps shrinking with every new disclosure. He should be drummed out of his leadership position. I suspect the Senate Ethics Committee will take a pass on this investigation.

jack, that's an argument - it's the one Reid made on MTP Sunday - and IMO it is wrong. I,5 doesn't give the senate the power to impose upon state officials any duties (and the Constitution is a document limiting the powers of the 3 branches of government, not enlarging them, so any power claimed by the branches has to be enumerated in it), and there is no authority to support the idea that the Senate can make law binding upon state officials through it's internal rules. Requiring a SoS to certify documents that aren't required as a qualification for serving as a senator is way outside of the powers granted by the constitution. But then again, I don't get to make these determinations.

Talking to reporters on the second day of a Washington power odyssey that would intimidate many, the 71-year-old Burris declared himself happy and said he was pleased with his meeting with Sens. This is not the senate telling a state what to do, they can't
It is the Senates right to determine the qualifications of its members, article 5, the 17 amendment only addressed the way states are to select senators.
The senate has done what Reid is threatening to do several times almost always for corruption. It doesn't happen often and is a move that should be taken lightly as I believe has happened in this case.

I couldn't find the link for this..so sorry it's a bit long but too funny to not pass along..

17. Caterpallor ( n.): The colour you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.

OMG! Bow! Thanks for that Jane Hamsher article -- she is hilarious!!!!!
"Blago laughs out loud. This is amateur night in Dixieland. He leaks to the press that he spoke with Reid before the election, and that Reid didn't think any of the African American candidates vying for the seat were "electable," while Tammy Duckworth was. He stirs up the potential jury pool and makes Reid look like an idiot -- the day before Reid is set to appear on Meet the Press."

After this fiasco ain't nobody gonna be scared of Harry and that is bad for a majority leader. Because most days the only real power he has is fear.

Jack...
I see your point about Specter....
although one could easily say the same thing about Hillary and the Democratic party..... she stayed because she believes in the Democratic party's principles.....
I suspect the same for Specter..... although I can hear you now saying "what the hell are Republican principles"..... LOL!

Posted by: Patsi
| January 7, 2009 6:17 PM
Obama better take the wheel pretty soon, because the Senate leadership is careening around like a bunch of drunks fighting over the steering wheel of old jalopy
From Wikipedia: Jalopy is a common slang term in American English, noted in 1924[citation needed] but now slightly passé, for an old, decrepit and unreliable automobile which has limited mechanical abilities, and at times can barely move. A jalopy is not a well kept antique car, but a car which is mostly rundown or beaten up.

Patsi, Reid was talking about what he and Burris had discussed and mentioned that Burris spoke of his degrees earned, how proud he was of his family etc.
Reid sounded more than a little conscending, but that could have just been perception of remarks made by a man very uncomfortable in the corner he had been boxed in.

| January 7, 2009 6:31 PM
Jamie
He meantioned his degrees? I wonder why?
Unless the conversation went something like this
Reid , sternly lecturing" but, you have to understand"
Burris: "I don't have to understand a God damn thing, I got my second college degree when your mother was changing your dirty diapers and wiping the shit off your white ass. Don't be lecturing me on politics. There is not a damned thing you can do except shut up and point me to my office."

Burris: I'm A Natural Born Citizen
"... Burris furnished the impeachment committee an affidavit. In that affidavit, Burris states that he is at least 30 years of age and "a natural born citizen of the United States." Article I of the U.S. Constitution requires a senator to be at least 30 years of age and "a citizen" of the United States for at least nine years. The "natural born citizen" requirement is only found in Article II of the U.S. Constitution establishing the qualifications for president of the United States. One can't help but wonder if Burris' "natural born citizen" status mentioned in his affidavit is a pointed barb at President-elect Obama, whose status has been called into question in more than a dozen lawsuits ..."

What if?
"What if an imposter from another country ran for the presidency and won?
What if the media blocked any news of his birthplace and citizenship?
What if the media censorship even blocked paid advertising that tried to expose it?
What if no one had the courage to challenge or verify it?
What if he was inaugurated illegally?
What if the military had to answer to a commander in chief who was illegitimate?
What if every law he signed was invalid?
What if every appointment he made was improper?"

"bringing in all the Clinton people doesn't smack of a sea change"
Max, Don't know if you saw Jamie's post this morning, but I really liked her take on it.
"Looking at all the Clinton people picked as the "insiders" on the team, it seems to be that Obama is doing something very smart. He is bringing back all the people who really wanted to "change" things from the last administration but were thwarted by a Republican Congress and the Clinton scandal, and given them a home in a new "change" administration where they might finally make things happen."

Well Chloe I will read Jamie's post. Work more than anything keeps me away. The change however that the Clinton referendum sought was quite different than what Obama preached. And he said we didn't need to return to the Clinton era which he rated DURING the primaries as par with Nixon. But that was Obama the politician. I'm not going to hold that against him. He did what he thought he needed to to beat Hillary. He has dragged into the WH so many issues and it could be possible he might be called as a witness to the Blago mess, Fizgerald hasn't stopped yet. Still, I don't care so much now considering what is at stake in the world. Sure, Obama had no team to run things, so he used the last team...LOL
