Barack Obama presided over one of the most efficient campaign organizations in history. There is a quiet competence about the man that voters found right for the times.

One of Obama's secrets was no tolerance for infighting among aides, a policy that Ronald Reagan followed to great effect. It's a management technique that tends to discourage news leaks. The news media prefers infighting. It's often how we get a story -- when feuding aides tattle on each other.

Understanding presidential character is important. What type of person typically rises to the job? While every president is a unique human being, there are certain characteristics most have in common. For starters, they like to hear themselves talk. Teddy Roosevelt called the office a "bully pulpit."

Most presidents do not like to be questioned, especially by the news media. George W. Bush refused to take follow-up questions at press conferences. It's much easier to stick to your talking points if you don't let anyone probe your answer.

Presidents are not always good listeners. The massive ego required to win office tends to get in the way. Confidence is a great thing, but sometimes it helps to know your limits and take advice.

Keeping secrets is a passion for the typical president. And it often gets them in trouble. There are simply too many people watching to ever think you won't get caught. How Bill Clinton thought he could conduct a sexual affair in the modern age of internet gossip and not get caught was about the dumbest move ever.

Most presidents are true extroverts, feeding off the energy of a crowd. One major exception was Calvin Coolidge, who was so laid back and shy that the writer Dorothy Parker, when told of his death, said, "How can you tell?"

patd, to what end? If he doesn't have seasoned experience in the Agency or one of its compatriot agencies, then he is just a pretty face.

The new DNI's intel experience is a tour with the Agency as a liaison officer years ago. He would not have been read into most of the ongoing Agency programs. He's the one who is supposed to be the manager and arbiter of truth. He can fulfill that responsibility only if he has confidence that his subordinate directors are in fact professionals in their craft and are providing judgmentally sound advice.

  15. In modern usage, sophism, sophist, and sophistry are derogatory terms, due the influence of many philosophers in the past (sophism and platonism were enemy schools).

A sophism is taken as a specious argument used for deceiving someone. It might be crafted to seem logical while actually being wrong, or it might use difficult words and complicated sentences to intimidate the audience into agreeing, or it might appeal to the audience's prejudices and emotions rather than logic, i.e. raising doubts towards the one asserting, rather than his assertion. The goal of a sophism is often to make the audience believe the writer or speaker to be smarter than he or she actually is, e.g., accusing another of sophistry for using persuasion techniques. An argument Ad Hominem is an example of Sophistry.

A sophist is a user of sophisms, i.e., an insincere person trying to confuse or deceive people. A sophist tries to persuade the audience while paying little attention to whether his argument is logical and factual.

  19. Mornin',

When I went to the Olberblogging site, I found that it is was very poor site, and I'm not even sure my vote was counted since the gold standard "Vote Now" or "Submit" button did not exist uner the list of candidates for whom to vote. They were actually accusing us TMixers of figuring out how to end-run the one vote cookies - I assured them that when it comes to computers, we aren't that sophisticated. (Hell some of us can't cut and paste links fuhchrissake, and they think we can disable cookies?)

Frankly, while I think years in the intel business would help you understand the intel business, it certainly doesn't assure that the intel given to the Pres is worth the paper it's written on, now does it? Just ask George SlamDunk Tenet, winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, or whatever the hell that stupid thing is. Give me intelligence, curiosity and willingness to nail people to the wall over the info they claim to have any day. Another example - the person who decides what the country will do as a result of the info from EVERY cabinet or equivalent level position is the president - who is certainly not experienced in all, and perhaps not in any of the areas of expertise the cabinet positions represent.

  39. good morning all

My father in law kept his pennies in jars, buckets and at one time rolled some of them. When we moved him out of his house we found (I would estimate) over 200 lbs of pennies. one tool box alone contained over 100lbs and was all I could do to pick it up and move it around.

On CBS Sunday morning they did a piece about a group that is building schools for Afghan and Pakistan children, with the idea that education of children especially girls reduces war. It is called "pennies for peace"

    http://www.penniesforpeace.org/about_power.html

My father in law is WWII veteran, he operated a flamethrower and did things and saw things that no 20 year old should have to experience. It affects him to this day.

Last night the wife proposed we give the pennies to the organization and maybe see if one of our school teacher friends would like to start a pennies for peace drive in their school. If so we can give them a boost with 200lb of pennies.
It seems like a worthy use of the pennies if they can keep a few children from living the life my father in law has lived.

And to get the record straight, you didn't tell anyone how to vote more than once - you told us how to delete cookies (specifying the one at issue, but nevermind that) - AC told pat how to vote twice. If you took what I said as a moral judgment - you're reading waaayyy too much into my opinion that voting more than once isn't right. Reid is being played like a fiddle - He's refusing to seat 2 Dem Senators - that represent two votes possibly critical to getting Obama's agenda moving in Congress - one because McConnell and Boner raised a stink and objected to the pick and he's trying to appear either tough on corruption or above the that sort of thing or whatever - and one because the Republican loser is going to appeal the results of the election. Again, McConnell declarin gthat the race isn't over (it is - but appeals are stil possible). Although technically I guess Franken can't be sworn until the MN gov. certifies that he won the election - which can't be until next Monday. This is the Senate leadership of the Dem party? As an only child, Craig has to count on his friends to do that for him. At least, I think Craig is an only child, as was my brother. (Apologies to Jack Paar, or whoever said that first.)

    http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1869224,00.html

    Wasting Our Energy
We complain about the cost of our energy, but we still throw away most of it. Our power plants, for example, waste enough energy to power Japan. Only 4% of the energy used to run a typical incandescent bulb produces light; the rest is frittered away as heat at the plant, over transmission lines or in the bulb itself, which is why you burn your fingers when you touch it. Our cars, water heaters and industrial motors are still embarrassingly inefficient compared with Japanese and European models.

i been warped by the rain, driven by the snow
i'm drunk and dirty don't you know, and i'm still, oh i'm still
out on the road late at night, i seen my pretty Alice in every head light

I've been from Tuscon to Tucumcari
    Tehachapi, to Tomapah
driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
now i've driven the back roads so i wouldn't get weighed

    chorus
And if you give me weed, whites and wine
    and show me a sigh
i'll be willin to be movin

Now I smuggled some smokes and folks from Mexico
Baked by the sum, every time I go to Mexico and I'm still
And I"ve been kicked by the wind, robbed by the sleet
Had my head stoved in and I'm still on my feet
And I'm willin, oh I'm willin

And I been from Tuscon to Tucumacari
    Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed

And if you give me, weed, whites and wine

"The crucifix is the oldest and most famous symbol of the Christian church. Pulling it down and putting up something that would look more at home on the side of a flashy modern shopping centre is not the way to get more bums on seats.

"Next they'll be ripping out the pews and putting sofas in their place, or throwing out all the Bibles and replacing them with laptops. It's just not right."

We went and saw them at the HogFest concert about 2 years ago in Canaan Valley - outdoor lawn seating concert - and they just blew the doors off the place (well, you know what I mean). I've seen them several times, and age doesn't seem to diminish their playing or their presence. If anything, Paul Barrere just keeps improving.
