  2. The Obama Inauguration picture book with photos from the Washington Post photography staff is on press at my plant today. I was looking at the proofs last night, and there are some really good photos. It will print all day today and overnight. Signatures to the binder Monday morning. It will be in bookstores in a few days.

Congress believes they can fund such a program, that will only grow in cost over the years, with a tax on a product that is rapidly declining in sales. When that industry files bankruptcy, where will the tax ghouls look next. Alcohol, fast food, chocolate, cell phones, computers email, Blogs, car mileage, obese persons, single parents, etc? These ghouls knows no end to quench their thirst for new streams of tax revenues. To bad the states wasted their share of the money generated from the 1998 settle suit, known as the Master Settlement Agreement. And who really thinks the Congress will do any better? Oh the poor children, how they must be suffering so.

  24. The American public agrees. According to the recent poll discussed today, two-thirds of Americans support a tobacco tax increase to fund children's health care and most want to vote for a candidate who does as well.

    A tobacco tax increase will act as a deterrent to young smokers and potential smokers. Studies show that for every 10 percent increase in the price of cigarettes, youth smoking is reduced by seven percent, and overall consumption by four percent. The facts are clear - higher tobacco taxes equal lower smoking rates in the long run. The effect is greater among America's kids. The higher the tax, the more substantial the future public health benefit. A higher tobacco tax will result in long-term health care savings, as fewer smokers means fewer people with strokes, heart attacks, cancer, and other smoking-related health conditions.

    It's been 10 years since Congress last voted to raise the federal cigarette tax. With what we know now about the effects of smoking, and the benefits of raising the price of cigarettes, it is unconscionable that action has not been taken to raise the tobacco tax and protect the health of Americans.

    The federal government is falling behind when it comes to taxing tobacco. Today, the tobacco tax is far below historical levels. It has failed to keep up with inflation; manufacturer and retailer price increases; state cigarette taxes; and cigarette taxes in other countries.

    Had the tobacco tax kept pace with these standards, tobacco use in the U.S. would have decreased even more substantially over the past ten years. However, smoking remains the number one preventable cause of death in the U.S., and every day four thousand children start smoking and fifteen hundred become daily smokers.

    It's time for Congress to take action to better protect Americans, particularly kids. Increasing the tobacco tax to put the money directly into health care for our nation's children is a win-win proposal we join together today to support.

He's gotten an angry earful so far, from people outraged about bank bailouts while they lose their health care along with their jobs. While he sympathized with what he was hearing, he was clear he was not going to be taking bolder steps to deal with the unravelling health care system:

There are so many thousands of dangerous people released among us every day, living in your neighborhoods etc. that to give someone who has been labeled a "terrorist" simply doesn't rank up there with child molesters, murderers, thieves and drunk drivers.

    The odds say you will be killed, threatened or robbed by one of the home grown varieties long before the terrorist gets around to your vicinity of the world.

    PHOENIX — Just a case of plumb luck. It took a plumber to retrieve a woman's 7-carat diamond ring after city workers failed in efforts to flush the gem out of the pipes of a restaurant toilet.

    The $78,000 engagement ring fell from Allison Berry's hand when she flushed the toilet in the restroom of the Black Bear Diner on Jan. 14. The ring plopped in and the water whisked it away, said Elena Castelar, the restaurant's shift manager.

    City workers opened a pipe outside the restaurant and continuously flushed the toilet, hoping to push the ring out to the opening. When that didn't work, the city called the office in suburban Tempe of Mr. Rooter, a plumbing services franchise based in Waco, Texas.

    "This is going to be like dredging for a treasure chest in the ocean," Mike Roberts, general manager of Mr. Rooter, said at the time.

    Roberts guided a tiny video camera into the pipe with an infrared light attached. He eventually spotted the ring just 3 feet down and 5 feet over from where it was flushed.

    Gay and Happy,yes I am.Much to be happy about...I hope your business things you were talking about with Jack last night come true.I think your one of the happiest people around..I think the exercising helps us both in that regard.I did an hour and half between the StairMaster and Elliptical trainer today and I also worked my back and biceps and that was after all my household chores...I'm tired....

    Unless things have changed, I've found a multi billion dollar gift to the Insurance Companies in the new stimulous plan.

    "COBRA: $30.3 billion to extend health insurance coverage beyond the 18 month limit '

    The last time I checked, Cobra meant you didn't lose your health coverage if you were layed off, but you had to pick up the full premium. So you've just lost your job. Your income has been drastically reduced and you are handed a bill of your previously free or partially paid healthcare that has now doubled or tripled in cost.

    This means that people who had high enough salaries that they can afford Cobra payments now get another 18 months to visit head hunters for that perfect job, while the middle and lower class guys who can't afford their health care in the first place just got put on the hook to pay off the taxes at a later date and still don't get health care when they need it most.

    Hope Blue Cross is having giggle fits over this one.

    Unlike previous generations since WW II, the cost of college is now out of reach of a much larger percentage of high school graduates.

  224. I just found out one of the guys I worked with on the Gubernatorial race has been appointed a Deputy Political Director in the Obama White House. His wife is the new Executive Director of the DNC. I don't know her well but Patrick was a huge Wes Clark supporter so we had a lot to talk about.

    Also, John, married to Jackie who is Michelle's Chief of Staff, will now be Chief of Staff for Secretary of Agriculture, Vilsack.

    I know of a couple of other people I have volunteered with who have lower level jobs, too. Everyone's moving to D.C. maybe I should go to.

    Not true. There may have been some residual hard feelings from the campaign, but she really had no prepping and seemingly a lot of bad advice. She has always been a very private person and was being pushed unprepared into a limelight that just wasn't natural for her.

    When you add that she had never been criticized, her reaction wasn't the best in the world which turned off even more people.

    I still lay most of the debacle at Patterson's door.

    For all of the weirdness surrounding Caroline Kennedy's now-defunct Senate quest, how odd was that phone call that she made this week to the New York governor asking for another 24 hours to think it over?

    I mean, it was her idea in the first place to seek the job. Imagine applying for a job, then calling back before any offer is made to say you needed more time to think about whether you really wanted it.

    Who would ever hire you? Unless you knew the job offer wasn't coming and wanted to save face -- which is what Caroline's withdrawal sounds like.

    And what must her uncle, Ted Kennedy, think about Caroline's camp hinting that his poor health was a factor in her decision. Some of his aides, who are struggling to keep the Massachusetts senator at the helm of enacting universal health care, were not a bit pleased at the suggestion that he was too ill for his niece to take the job.

    Contrary to the reports that lenders are voluntarily re-doing stressed mortgages---this is being done with very, very few mortgages--most of those looking to modify using the so-called "voluntary" agreement by lenders to do so---are rejected.

    Without the leverage that would be provided by legislation authorizing bankruptcy judges to modify loan terms---there is little incentive for these lenders to do so. So much for "real" solutions to a problem that is at the core of the financial meltdown.

    our northern suburban schools lead the world.

    We have regional problems, the most severe being in urban schools throughout the nation and also in states in the deep south.

    My personal opinion is that a great deal of our education problems are steeped in the anti intellectual bent of southern culture both black and white. It is most predominate in the poor.

    The nominee for the Defense Department’s No. 2 job got a pass on President Barack Obama’s tough new ethics rules.

    After a long stint as a senior Washington operations executive at Raytheon Co., William J. Lynn is poised to head back to the Pentagon to become the deputy secretary of defense. He was a registered lobbyist for the giant defense contractor from 2003 through June 2008.

    Peter Orszag, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, said in a statement that “it is in the public interest to grant the waiver given Mr. Lynn’s qualifications for his position and the current national security situation.” Specifically, the waiver covers a “revolving door ban” designed to address appointees’ conflicts of interest with former employers or clients during and after their government service.

    Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he was satisfied with the waiver and expected Lynn will follow the relevant ethics rules.

    Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in the November election, was less than happy with the waiver. “I am disappointed in President Obama’s decision to waive the ‘revolving door’ provisions of the executive order for Mr. Bill Lynn,” McCain said in a statement. “While I applaud the president’s action to implement new, more stringent ethical rules, I had hoped he would not find it necessary to waive them so soon.”

  394. The family that I work with are Native and they always have air dried fish and whale blubber brought to them by family that in the Bush. I've had some of the dried fish before, it's good (salmon, so of course it's good) but I've yet to try whale, seal or walrus blubber.

  401. Yeah, the family that I worked for threw such a stink about losing me, that I got hired back. Pretty cool, huh? I think that it is probably air dried. There really isn't a lot of wood out in the tundra and the places that Natives have as fishing camps. Stuff is dried NEXT to a fire, but not like in smokehouses like we think of them. The air up here is so cold and dry it just sucks the moisture out of everything.

    In reference to a comment that most people don't compalin about some of the ugly stuff said here, I'd like to say that while I don't enjoy the ugliness, I don't want to complain because I have a very strong aversion to correcting people. I think it is arrogant, insulting, and condescending.

    I can say that I wish Beian and Patsi didn't go after each other so strongly, but I'm not going to criticize them for it. Actually, I don't understand where most of the arguments start and what they're about.

    I will even state that I defend their right to fire back if they feel they've been fired on. I like them , and almost all of the posters here. There are a few I REALLY stay away from but I don't intend to name them because that would be my way of saying I think they should change, and I don't think that and don't think I have a right to say it.

    I believe in taking people for what they are, and if I don't like it, I should leave. I'm still here, albeit posting long posts.

    Patsi - regardless of your son's question, I hope you stay. You add a lot.
