Rush Limbaugh must now be the new leader of the Republican Party, at least in the House of Representatives. The conservative radio comedian took aim at President Barack Obama's economic stimulus plan -- and in lock step, every GOP lawmaker voted against it on Wednesday.
When one Republican House member dared to say a cross word about Limbaugh, his constituents were so outraged that he felt the need to go on Rush's show and apologize in a truly pathetic display. U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey of Georgia took back his earlier observation that rich media figures like Limbaugh earn their living by stirring up conservatives without having to struggle with the consequences.
Gingrey could not backpedal fast enough, later telling Limbaugh, "I clearly ended up putting my foot in my mouth on some of those comments, and I just wanted to tell you, Rush -- and all our conservative giants, who help us so much to maintain our base and grow it to get back this majority -- that I regret those stupid comments."
That would appear to make Rush the new face of the Republican Party. Good luck with that.
Limbaugh is a talented entertainer with an agenda and a huge audience. But in the age of Barack Obama his following is not large enough to make Republicans a majority party in the House again -- as he helped them do in 1994. He can, however, help them become a very noisy minority.

Comments
Rush is out front because the republican party is in disarray.

When I check the weather channel, I see headlines about vicious winter storms and all that jazz. It males me feel very bad BECAUSE WE ARE DRYING UP OUT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sorry that so many of you are suffering with the snow and ice - actually I'm sorry that you're suffering,
period.
It seems to me that Frost expected the world will be done in with fire - he didn't particularly say he favored fire. He admitted that ice would do the job as well.
So I feel quite justified in saying that I myself would favor ice. I hate the heat, and I hate dry, in almost every instance. Contemplation of Australia and its idea of a heat waves makes me weak.

More on topic, Rush Limbaugh is the quintessential
dirty old man who doesn't get it that he is just about as repellent as a person can be. He is a bully because it makes him feel powerful when nothing provides that, and it also makes him feel attractive because it draws power junkies to him.
Oh, yes baby 3 is just adorable and sleeps thru all the noise his two brothers make - wakes up once or twice at night, and sleeps a lot. It's about time we had a laid-back one! His brothers hold him and kiss him and tell him they love him - it's something to watch. Of course, I know that doesn't mean they won't tackle him in about a year or so!

Question: Why Were Mules More Popular Than Horses in the Ancient Mediterranean?
Answer: The following is information from Engineering in the Ancient World, by Landels.
Transportation
The horse played an insignificant part in Greek and Roman transportation. Instead, they used mules for light transport and the ox for heavy. The human porter (saccarius) is more adaptable. Limitations - at a distance of greater than 40-50 yds, the saccarius could only carry 50-60 lbs or about 4 modii, or in Greek, 2/3 of a medimnos and only about 300-400 yds. He probably moved at a speed of about 3 mph. For larger loads or distances, ancient Greeks or Romans would have used a mule or donkey with paniers.
Breeding
Mules were normally bred from a mare and a male donkey. Mules are less temperamental than horses and easier to train for that type of work. Mule's skin is harder and tougher. It can withstand extreme temperatures better than a horse and can go longer without water. It has harder hooves and is more sure footed on rocky terrain. A mule needs only 4-5 hours of sleep a day. A mule goes just over 3 mph or about 50 miles in a day. Oxen might cover 5-6 miles in a day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Forum Member KL47 on Horses and Mules
>>>"Mules normally from a mare and a male donkey are less temperamental than horses and easier to train for that type of work."
"Mules are also stronger than horses of similar size and have considerably greater stamina, making them ideal pack animals. In addition to being less excitable than horses, they're also noticeably more intelligent, which is where their reputation for being stubborn comes from - they can't be readily fooled or goaded into putting themselves at risk. As there's obviously no value in keeping a mule stallion "intact", they are invariably gelded, which makes them even more level-headed. Indeed, the only area in which mules are generally inferior to horses is in running speed, which is pretty much irrelevant for draft and pack animals. Of course, being a long-time resident of Missouri, where the mule is our official state animal and was one of the state's most important exports until the middle of the last century, one tends to hear a lot about their virtues!:-)"
"As the peculiar nature of mule "production" requires a carefully controlled program with a suitable supply of mares and jacks on hand to maintain the desired traits, there were large-scale mule producers in various parts of the Roman empire. Around AD 60, L. Junius Moderatus Columella wrote a work called De re rustica (usually called On Agriculture in English) which is an encyclopaedic survey of all aspects of farming, animal husbandry, plant breeding, gardening, bee-keeping and so on. Book 6 concerns the breeding of horses, mules and oxen, and includes the following passage in chapter 27:"
"Horses are divided into three groups: the noble breed that provides animals for holiday races in the circus; the stock used for breeding mules, which fetches a price that puts it on a level with the noble variety; and the common breed, which produces ordinary mares and stallions."
"Mule-producing mares were thus considered to be of comparable value to those on racehorse studs, and certainly worth more than those producing horses for mundane use by soldiers and civilians!"
"Columella was born at Cadiz in Spain, and it was from Spain that the most prized jacks for producing mules were obtained in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to establish the American mule "industry". I don't know if Spain was a major source of mules in Roman times, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case."

Where is the Debate?

Ping, you may be the centric leader that America has been waiting for - but your vote is Rush's - and I'm sure he's not the centric leader America has been waiting for. And newsflash - Dems voting as a bloc at the urgings of the Dem president is EXACTLY no less and no more lockstep than repubs voting in lockstep with the urgings of Rush, Boner, you or anyone else - self proclaimed centric leader (I also describe myself as a centrist, btw) or right wing idiot. Yes, Rush has a point he is making - he always does - as does KO - who I used to like a great deal but haven't watched much for months - but IMHO, Rush's points are just so much blathering of wrongheaded rightwing talking points that have of late been rejected by the majority of people who vote. If America were the center-right country he claims, I would have expected a slightly different result in the races for Pres, HoR & Senate. But then I suppose blathering becomes "a point" when it sounds like what we think is akin to the TRUTH - a concept that both of the extremes seem to think they hold an exclusive franchise on, but seldom are considered to hold that franchise for long by the majority that lies between their extreme positions. And Ping, they don't call Rush's followers DITTOHEADS because they engage in the analytical exercise of questioning and debating HIS pronouncements.

He has an agenda and a huge audience -- that's for sure. But unless exploiting bigotry is a talent, uh....
He is a sexist, racist drug addled ass. The "talent" he has is in filling up mindless minds with twisted points. He does what all propagandists do: he takes a point or issue out of context and away from any logical conclusion. He invents an alternate reality. And, like KO, he does it with an arrogance that passes for authority among far too many Americans.

renee, our weather sounds identical. Last night when I wandered down to the garage to check progress on the latest project the snow was crusty but I'd break through on every step. This morning, the stuff had frozen essentially solid - I didn't break through at all, and all the flat, relatively level surfaces (read roads and sidewalks here) had a nice glaze of about 1/4" of almost perfectly smooth ice on them. I have two words for you (well for the people here who are sliding around) - salt, salt.
Amd bethy, I'll trade a little of our ice for a little of your heat - it's what I grew up in and kinda like it.

renee - never saw that product - I think I know why - it's not in our WallyWorld, and the nearest store that carries it, according to the store locator, is 112 miles away. Looks like I'll continue to use salt. The good news is, I use very little of the stuff (just on the steps and sidewalk in front of Mrs. P's office and on the sidewalk to our house (which is a whopping 25 feet long) and only when it's icy. Pets don't get to those areas unless they are running loose, in violation of our leash laws (not an unlikely scenario, btw, but not all that common, either). I only use the regular salt stuff that is NaCl, and don't use those wierd little white pellets that look like styrofoam because frankly, I hate to clean up the rugs and stuff when we use them.

Excuse the interjection but salt (NaCl) is harmful to concrete and degrades it. Calcium chloride is (or used to be) cheep and not harmful to cementitious structures.

Ping
We are in a deflationary spiral. Tax cuts don't work.
That was the conventional wisdom that Hoover followed. Look where it got him and the Republican party.
What we need is anybody buying stuff. If business and the public aren't then government needs too. It really doesn't matter what kind of stuff. Public art projects will work as well as roads. Just as long as stuff is bought.
Right now Keynes rules. Five years from now? not so much.
So do away with general tax breaks they are a waste of money they won't work. The only tax breaks should be ones that force a purchase before the tax break is given. ex. the tax credit for energy star appliances.

Kitty litter Is a good emergency replacement for sand but it doesn't lower the freezing point of water so it would not be an effective ice melt.
But it is great for traction.

Dooty,
I love that tax cut the Republicans are touting. The average family will see $14 a week. They probably should not spend it all in one place ... have to spread that wealth around.
Now the new piece the Senate is putting in about the "minimum tax" relief is a good idea since they passed the original without pegging it to inflation.
Posted by: Jamie
| January 29, 2009 10:28 AM
Jack, like I said, I use it sparingly, and using sand would just give me the same problem with cleanup the white crap does - only worse.
AC, thx - I'll keep that in mind.
HD, Kitty litter doesn't work the same - it might mimic the sand part, but not the salt part, whose function is to melt the ice. (It does do a good job of soaking up oil, though).
OK, so now I went and did a little research on ice melting products. Sodium and calcium clhloride can harm concrete. Magnesium Chloride doesn't. Potassium Chloride is OK on old concrete. All of them harm plants, MgCl & KCl less so than CaCl & NaCl. Everything else provides traction but doesn't melt ice - except fertilizer - which certainly doesn' t hurt your plants but it screws up the streams and bays if used too much. The order of effectiveness (fastest to slowest) is MgCl. CaCl, NaCl & KCl. (Thanks to the U of MD for all this info).

Another idea, instead of a general tax break for business's cut the depreciation schedules in half.
every dollar invested in capital goods that is depreciated is really just 70 cents out of my pocket. Again, breaks for buying stuff.

Rush is an entertainer that influences people on the way they vote,,,,so is SNL,,(just started watching them again,,since the election if over) so is Letter man and all the others,,,and I believe this is where a lot of uniformed voters come from, they are not getting all the right info,,I used to watch Ko,,,but he for the last few years is an entertainer now also,,,CM is still on msnbc,,,cos he entertains?
Surg---thanks for all the mule information,,,,I have been called mule headed a few times,,,,now I don't feel so bad.
Champ---please get me the Brooklyn bridge at a low price,,,I love it and it's history,,,,it's Architect's ( the Roebling family ) were obsessed (in a good way) with the building of it,,,quite a marvelous story,,,,It is the oldest suspended bridge,,,
Animal is correct imo Hydratic acid is the least harmful and the costs less to use,,,,if it gets on your hands or any part of your body,,,a little water will take it off,,with just a little burn,,Jacks mix of salt and sand is also inexpensive,,,,I also check my tires for any salt wedged in the grooves,,ie does harm concrete driveway's .
Patsi---hi-----I just read that link about the Unions that you left for Tony,,,I agree with it 100%,,,,if the money sucking Union heads are not in them,,,,just good reps? at one time I think that the highest (around here) Union members was at 33%,,,now down to about 8-12? The Rush L's and the Republicans,,,,have had a war on them....but the Union did not do its self any favors with all of the arm twisting( mostly the trade unions) that they do,,,it turns off small and mid size corps and they resist this, what I hear is that we are forced to pay their health ins, benefits while we have none, the large companies no so much(auto's and machine shop's ),,but they are mostly in the 8 to 12 % that still employ union workers.
Pogo---you once asked me if they had a cable or chain that will go up into space that connects the wind turbines that scientist have made----C-bob--on the science channel look for a program that is called Project Earth --Orbital Power Plant,,,,,they also have a cpl of shows on solar power from the unknown ----scratch that ---we now know most of it --it tink no?,,I will look for it and give you a heads up.

KC, thanks for that "myths" link. Lemme see, who do I trust more on economic matters - RW hack George Will (Pulitzer for commentary) or Paul Krugman (Nobel for Economics). Hmmmm.
Solar - Hydratic acid? wtf? Is that some slang term for CaCl? My question about the cables to space was strictly tongue in cheek. It was meant to reflect the fact that currently there is no way to feasibly get power collected by orbiting solar panels to the earth for use as electricity.

Hey, now - I grew up using y'all and it took 6 years in ME & NH to get me to say "you guys" instead. NMy sister thinks I'm haughty when I do so.
now, lunch.
See y'all.

Pogo
Microwave beams
There is the small problem of focus but locate them over on my side of town with the rest of the hazardous industries.
But what the heck, if the beam wanders a bit and a few of us get fried, nobody will worry.

Solar,
Just a reminder Muriatic aAcid used incorrectly (which is easy to do), will etch concrete and it's tough on the lungs. PROSOCO Products out of Kansas has great non destructive cleaning products for masonry and concrete.

Jack -- that's interesting....they just changed my sister's diabetes medication and she is feeling twenty years younger....

Okay. This is my totally unreasonable judgemental moment. The woman who just had octuplets has already had six children. When you think of all the children needing foster or adoptive homes, this wacko is selfish and irresponsible beyond belief and why news channels give her 15 seconds of fame much less 15 minutes repeated over and over is beyond me.

We always used urea deicer around the aircraft. On the roads away from the airstrips, we plowed, put down some sand, and waited for April. No salt. And, very seldom any accidents.

Hey, now Solar - I'm not yellin' atcha. Lessee, huge solar collectors on geostationary satelites, huge microwave beam antennae - this is beginning to take shape. (And people were worried about windmills killing birds and bats. :-) talk about getting your goose cooked!!! BBBZZZZTTTT.
Yeah, I'd be a little reluctant to use muriatic acid to melt snow - I've used it to clean mortar off brick and tile - even used rubber gloves and a respirator - the only time I can recall using a respirator, which is remarkable considering what I've breathed and where I've worked. Isn't it just dilute hydrochloric acid? Hell, at least the salts aren't sold to etch concrete.

Alicia, LOL. I drove Mrs. P to lunch, and Blago was droning on and on about how unfair the process was. We ate lunch and got back into the car to come back to work and Blago was still droning on and on about how unfair the process was. Mrs. P hit the knob and changed the station - saying she heard it on the way to lunch and didn't need to hear it on the way back to work. He may think he's eloquent, but no one will ever accuse him of being succinct.

Amimal ---thanks for that Prosoco product,,,will check them out
and you are rigth M acid can do damage if not done right,,,,guess im used to it,,,,used it to clean our cabs on concrete trks,,,,but you have to hose it off right away,,,or it will eat the paint off,,,,but what I think is what go me is Concrete I have a lot of burn marks on my ankles that are sorta like battle scars,,,and yes I do wear high concrete boots but some how it still happens once in a while,,,,,I am never happier than when Im working with concrete,,,,,nuts huH
Patsi---Stop it,,and don't you dare give that you know who,,,,for dinner--yer killing me
Pogo --im just used to working with it I guess,,,,I also use it to rough up an existing porch when putting a latex topping on it,,,Huge solar collectors is right,,,,,,you have to start looking at some of this stuff on the science channel,,,,that is why I don't get too crazy about some plans that are out now----and why Im glad that Obama actually has a scientist on his team,,,,,going to move forward imo---just think what he might have accomplished if we had big $ for experimentation?? what is neat is that they can do a lot of simulation with computers,,,and,,and,,,and,,,lots of them,,,you get the picture no? some of this stuff is mind boggling ,,,,and real easy in my case :-)

Animal---liked the Prosoco product site a lot--that I booked marked,,thanks,,,,have you been following how they are using tires (used and new) melted down and used for roadways (streets) combined with adhesives ,,,and able to filter water thru it,,,,no pot holes to repair,,?,,,I dont know about all of the aggregate that they use but sounds pretty good.
