Bush's 'Peaceful' Refuge

| | Comments (146)

It is widely believed that the beginning of the end of George W. Bush's popularity as president began with his tepid response to Hurricane Katrina. I disagree. It really began a few weeks earlier.

Bush's undoing began in the summer of 2005 when war protesters camped out close to his ranch near Waco, Texas, where he thought he would be safe from the real world, with plenty of land to buffer away the onlookers -- and the press in particular.

The president and his staff were almost paranoid about deflecting unwanted attention at the ranch in Crawford, Texas. When a reporter on a road trip to Dallas -- who wasn't part of the traveling press corps at the Bush ranch -- asked a local party official for directions to Crawford, later that day the president's press secretary called, suspiciously asking, "Why are you going to the ranch." He was told that it was a just a field trip to the town to see what it was like.

Ultimately, the ranch was not so peaceful a place for Bush, although it was the birthplace of a peace movement protesting the war in Iraq. It was near the ranch in the summer of 2005 that Cindy Sheehan, the mother of an American soldier killed in Iraq, staged a month long protest that became a focal point for rising numbers of citizens who had grown tired of the war.

On some days as many as 1500 supporters visited "Camp Casey," named for Sheehan's deceased son -- including members of Congress, as well as several notable actors, singers, and civil rights activists.

In a moment that seemed to underscore how Bush was out of touch with the public mood, his motorcade of limousines and police escorts indifferently sped by the makeshift camp of anti-war activists.

Bush thought a remote ranch in one of the most desolate parts of the country would keep the world away. Not so. Presidents cannot escape their public.

Did I hear that he's giving a going away speech on Thursday night? One, last attempt to leave us with a good impression and undo 8 years of ick with a few minutes of stammering?

    15. Despite my antipathy for him and his administration, I can understand the need for a place to hide. But his was cloaked in a paranoia not seen since Nixon.

Every time, especially at holidays, I saw him dragging all the agents and military people away from their own homes I bridled at the thoughtless obliviousness of the man.

By the way, I read in AF Times that the DoD is shopping for a new fleet of airplanes to replace the current 747s. The ultimate cost will be in the billions. The reason cited was that they were simply too old and it would be too expensive to update them.

I say, no new airplanes for the president until the people in our Air Force have updates for their tankers and B-52s--airplanes that are more than twice as old as the 747s and that have many, many times the flying hours on their tired airframes.

CAIRO, Egypt — Al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden urged Muslims to launch a jihad against Israel and condemned Arab governments as allies of the Jewish state in a new message aimed at harnessing anger in the Mideast over the Gaza offensive.

Bin Laden spoke in an audiotape posted Wednesday on Islamic militant Web sites where al-Qaida usually issues its messages. It was his first tape since May and came nearly three weeks after Israel started its campaign against Gaza's militant Hamas rulers.

The al-Qaida leader also vowed that the terror network would open "new fronts" against the United States and its allies beyond Iraq and Afghanistan. He said President-elect Barack Obama has received a "heavy inheritance" from George W. Bush — two wars and "the collapse of the economy," which he said will render the United States unable to sustain a long fight against the mujahedeen, or holy warriors.

    33. Big Problem that Bush also ignored?

Groups sue EPA, want tougher ship discharge rules

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Environmentalists sued the federal government Monday over new rules that critics say do too little to prevent cargo ships from dumping invasive species into the nation's waterways.

The Environmental Protection Agency is requiring oceangoing vessels to exchange their ballast water, or rinse their ballast tanks if empty, before entering U.S. coastal waters and the Great Lakes. Environmentalists say more extensive treatment of ballast tanks is necessary to keep invasive species from foreign ports from damaging U.S. aquatic ecosystems.

Ballast water, which keeps vessels stable in rough seas, is blamed for carrying zebra mussels and many other invasive species into U.S. waters where they have overwhelmed native species and caused other environmental harm.

Apparently enough folks working abroad were not aware of their "self employment" status that the IRS had to issue a circular on the issue. And his Nanny or whatever, he did not hire an illegal worker - she was was in the country legally, and legally performing work when she was hired, she was married to an American citizen, AND she got a new green card reissued when she applied for it. Hardly the same as Sanchez.

Hillary Clinton's Senate confirmation hearing to become Barack Obama's secretary of state turns into a group hug.

"Not long after that, Kerry was at it again. "Mr. President," Clinton began to address him, as she answered a question. "I'll take that," Kerry answered. "Mr. President-elect ... Mr. Chairman -- it was a Freudian slip," she corrected herself. "We're both subject to those, I want you to know," Kerry said. Ziplining actually looks like fun. There is a great scene in "Medicine Man" where they are riding through the top of the jungle canopy. That I could handle. I just don't want to know how far "DOWN" is located.

    77. Just a personal observation, but I'm finding the Politico website a much more interesting source of coverage during the transition than it was during the campaign.

Their campaign coverage so often just seemed to follow the same furrows being plowed every day on cable TV news. But just in the past few days they've had some great, original stuff from both inside the transition team and from Capitol Hill -- the addition of longtime WSJ ace David Rogers was a great move for them.

It is going to be up to us to decide whether or not we wanna be represented by the UAW. Lots to think about.

Sorry, Sturge, I just saw your early morning question about Enfield being in my neck of the woods. It depends how big the woods are.

Cayuga Lake is about three hours from Schoharie, and it's one of those deals where there's no ideal way to get there. In the time it would take me to get to Cayuga Lake, I could get to Yankee Stadium. Therefore, I've never seen Cayuga Lake.

(I'm lying about never seeing the lake, but it was an innocent lie that baseball fans should be excused for, while they're waiting for pitchers and catchers to report.)

    92. LL - it sure beat working for a living - if I tolerated poverty better than I do, I'd probably still be there.

The platforms on our courses were small - about big enough to stand on for the student and the instructor, and no more than 2x2 feet, with no real railing or anything like that (other than the tree, of course) to hold onto while you hooked up and tried to get up the courage to jump, attached to pine trees that were swaying from the wind and from the movement of the other course elements attached to the same trees, and defintely were less than secure feeling. To minimize stress on the system, we'd have the students lean as far out as they could before the jumped - the look of absolute terror on some of their faces as they tried to will themselves to lean out over nothing was - well - you can imagine.

For me that was the high water mark for him and his party, it's been down hill ever since then.

Jamie -- Inauguration day is a federal holiday for feds in the Washington, DC area. Not the contractors though, who work for the feds. They have to take personal leave even though they can't get into the federal buildings where they work. Most of the school districts in the DC area are closing 1/20.

By 2003, however, GM had determined that the EV1 was not commercially viable. It decided to withdraw all EV1s from their leases, retain a few, and destroy the others. GM ended the consumer test project in 2004."
