Bush's Most Fateful Day

| | Comments (197)

As we ponder George W. Bush's final week as president, what was his most fateful day in office? One is that day in August of 2001 when he got word in a national security intelligence briefing that terrorist Osama Bin Laden was planning a major attack. Thirty six days later the warning came true.

A censored copy of the intelligence memo that Bush saw on Aug. 6 at his Texas ranch was released by the White House three years later. It was entitled, "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US," and provided many details about his activities, including that members of his organization, Al-Qa'ida, "have resided in or traveled to the US for years, and the group apparently maintains a support structure that could aid attacks." At least 70 FBI investigations were underway to find them, the memo reported to the president.

There was even a reference to Bin Laden's desire to hijack U.S. aircraft, although the memo did not foresee that hijackings would be used to crash into buildings, as happened a little over a month later to the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington.

Bush shuffled the CIA's warning over to his National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice -- and went bass fishing. He never called a meeting or followed up on the matter until nearly 3,000 Americans were killed on Sept. 11, 2001. The day after the intelligence warnings in August there was more recreation time, as Bush played golf and joked around with reporters.

"No mulligans, except on the first tee," Bush said to laughter as he hit a second drive on the first fairway. "That's just to loosen up. You see, most people get to hit practice balls."

Although Rice later tried to claim in testimony to Congress that Bush had put the government on "battle stations" during that time, even a close Bush adviser wouldn't go along with that, calling her characterization an "overstatement." No evidence ever surfaced that Bush did anything, said anything or even thought about the matter between that briefing and 9/11.

  7. craig, here's richard a. clarke with similar sentiments:
"There wasn't a second 9/11? That's obviously true, but it misses the point. First, we must remember that Al Qaeda terrorists are patient, deliberate planners who often wait years between strikes. Second, there was the first 9/11 - and it happened on Bush's watch. Without rehashing the entire 9/11 Commission Report, the historical record is pretty clear by now that Bush did virtually nothing about the repeated warnings to him that those cataclysmic attacks were coming. Unfortunately, I can personally attest to that as well."

He is one big right wing knee jerk. Here is a site that compares the statements he makes about Global warming and his supposed "debunking" of Al Gore and what the actual material said and why Beck's understanding (or purposeful presentation) is complete hooey

  10. Editors at newspapers put up with all kinds of stupid comments (from one another) at brainstorming sessions to come up with story ideas.

A remember at one meeting less than a year after 9/11 we were trying to develop a story list for the obligatory anniversary section. One dummy at the table actually came up with this cliche of an observation: "You know, I think people have already forgotten 9/11. Don't you? Maybe that would make a good theme for a story."

I just gave him the most withering look I could summon and replied: "No. I don't think so. I sure remember 9/11 and I'm sure lots of other folks do, too. It was that day two or three great big jet planes ran into some big buildings and knocked them down. Remember? Yesirree. I haven't forgotten that day."

    Stupid news cliches.

They need to go beyond that. A good many houses in my neighborhood are rentals. There is no incentive for the landlord to make them energy efficient, he doesn't pay the gas bills the tenant does.
I would like to see section 8 housing inspection have an energy efficiency section that the house has to pass before it is eligible for vouchers.

I know of houses where the utility bill is more than the rent.

    Solar,

The town most frequently hit by the rockets now has protective shelters where the people live rather than above ground so fewer of them are hit and die.

Hamas on the other hand, stores its weapons and places its rockets in private homes, in schools and in mosques with no protection for the civilian population.

Now if you want to add in more than 100 deaths per year by suicide bombers and car bombs (not to mention the multiple hundreds of injuries) you might be closer to the truth.

It is the difference between a country that is trying to stop an attacking enemy that simply refuses to stop attacking and a political group that doesn't care how many of its people die as long as they can pursue their fanaticism.

  24. Mexico's Calderon leaves door open to NAFTA discussions

WASHINGTON — Mexican President Felipe Calderon left the door open on Tuesday to discussion of possible changes in the North American Free Trade Agreement a day after talks with U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.

The Mexican government has been concerned about Obama's campaign promise to renegotiate NAFTA with the United States' two partners, Mexico and Canada.

After his final White House meeting with President George W. Bush a week before he hands over to Obama, Calderon joined his host in hailing the benefits of NAFTA, saying it had created jobs on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border.

"As I indicated to President-elect Obama yesterday, we are willing to build on the foundation of what the free trade agreement has gained in order to focus on improving the benefits," Calderon said with Bush at his side in the Oval Office.

But the one that was most fateful for Bush was the day he decided to do his fundraiser while New Orleans was flooding.

"NOTE: Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009, falls on a Tuesday. An employee who works in the District of Columbia, Montgomery or Prince George's Counties in Maryland, Arlington or Fairfax Counties in Virginia, or the cities of Alexandria or Falls Church in Virginia, and who is regularly scheduled to perform nonovertime work on Inauguration Day, is entitled to a holiday. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(c).) There is no in-lieu-of-holiday for employees who are not regularly scheduled to work on Inauguration Day.'

would it not benefit the landlord to fix the houses and make them more energy efficient so if nothing else not be accused of being a slum lord? If the houses provided energy savings to the renter could the slum lord then raise the rent some to see a gain back for their investment?

  58. Solar...my only point up above was that the "numbers game" or the "body count" alone really tends to oversimplify a very complex situation.

I don't think "proportionality" is the issue here -- it's basic sovereignty and security. If the Mexican government started lobbing rockets indiscriminately into El Paso, we'd probably send in the U.S. Army and not stop until we rooted out and/or killed all the people shooting them at us....even if more of their civilians than ours were ultimately killed. Nobody would be worried much about "proportionality" in that case.

Now, if Israel pre-emptively uncorked a nuke over downtown Tehran next week just to stop the Iranian weapons development program -- then I think you could have a proportionality discussion.

  63. Yo soy,

You can't shame a slum lord type. But they can be put out of business if the quality of their housing is worse than comprable priced housing. Houses do get reputations and the tenant churn can effect profits. But we aren't talking about people people that think that far ahead.
Also, a lot of slum lord types rent section 8. They do the minimum to pass inspection. If you add insulation and weatherization requirements the they will still do the miniumum. BTW in my neighborhood section 8 is better than the market.

As far as being able to rent for more not really people look at the rent number and don't think about the cost of utilities.. This is especially true when the landlord does a cheap cosmetic rehab. In that case they both look the same to the average renter. Behind painted sheet rock uninsulated walls look the same as those with insulation and most renters don't think about the advantage of having a new furnace.

My wife and I have had this discussion and she thinks I put too much into my houses but I keep arguing that in the end we will get better renter who will stay longer.
In the end the market will tell wheather I am right or she is.

Maybe time for a joke, eh Solar?:

A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up & down the aisles. The sales girl notices him and asks him if she can help him.

He answers that he is looking for a box of tampons for his wife.

She directs him down the correct aisle.

A few minutes later, he deposits a huge bag of cotton balls and a ball of string on the counter.

She says, confused, 'Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your wife?

He answers, 'You see, it's like this, yesterday, I sent my wife to the store to get me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of tobacco and some rolling papers; cause it's sooo-ooo--oo-ooo much cheaper.

So, I figure if I have to roll my own .......... so does she.

    Solar,

I don't know that they are doing anything of the sort. No western reporters are allowed into Gaza. They have already been caught using photos of events that Hama itself did in 2005 ... old pictures. I don't doubt that innocents have been wounded and killed. At the same time I don't trust any information put out by Hamas until there is confirmation of the events.

There is one very simple way to bring a stop to the whole thing. ... Stop shooting rockets into Israel. Stop sending car bombs into Israel. Stop signing up suicide bombers to blow themselves up into Israel, and stop importing weapons from Iran to use against Israel.

    End of problem

  92. Hey all
Ole Pat has some good points about Bush in this piece.
    http://buchanan.org/blog/
    "PJB: An Unreflective Man"

"Nor does there appear in Bush’s self-assurance any awareness of the cost of his Freedom Agenda. In Iraq, it is 4,000 U.S. dead, 30,000 wounded, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi dead, millions of refugees, a pogrom against an ancient Christian community, and a strategic victory for Iran and its Shia allies across the Middle East. When last heard from, the Ayatollah Sistani — the chief Shia cleric in Iraq, who has welcomed Iranian but not American visitors — was calling for Muslims to stand up against Israeli criminality in Gaza."

    Posted by: tonyb39 Author Profile Page | January 13, 2009 7:56 PM

  93. Craig,
    A few observations.

    1. You would be surprised what plots come down the wire. Clinton left office with a. little control on deteriorating Pakistani/Indian relationship (going nuclear) b. lack of public desire to "get OBL" (Left wanted to lift sanctions on Saddam), c. Saddam hoping Iran would think he was rebuilding WMD capacity, d. Sudan and Somali turning darker with Rwanda a complete tragedy, e. a Clinton/Gore green light for Russia to arm Iran, f. NK suspected of screwing Clinton agreement, Palestinian bombers going off in Israel and of course g. the nut we armed, OBL as plotting. There was a similar aviation plot centered from Indonesian that Clinton thwarted. Clark most feared biological threats.

    2. The saddest day happened sometime around 2003, when half of this country forgot what it was like thinking that our way of life had forever changed. At first for a year we realized how easy it would be to terrorize the West and eventual get WMD to hit us. By the time of our invasion of Iraq, many on the Left had drifted back into "normalcy" and joined the choir that most terrorists lived in caves and the US was the world’s greatest evil. So the saddest day was when we forgot the import of 9/11 and allowed of public standard to fall into the gutter. In reality, with every minute that goes by on the clock, things are meeting predictions. Boy will we be surprised, but then Obama ought to already know this.

    3. And let us be clear in regard to warnings and potential threats. Sure, that briefing was something to consider. What if the terrorists crashed their plan into a nuclear reactor? Despite that fateful day (and there has not been another during the remainder of the Bush years), Obama is coming to office with a UN failure happening in Lebanon, Sudan, Somalia etc.. Yes, Barak must consider Kenya, Somalia and the Sudan. He knows from intelligence reports that Iran is supplying Hamas via Somalian pirates. Perhaps he should inform Carter. From the Sudan to Iraq including South America, Iran is pulling terror strings. Obama also knows from reports that NK may be working with Syria and Iran to develop WMD, spreading out facilities between countries. Barak hears some expert estimates at 1 to 3 years before Iran builds a bomb and has delivery systems. He knows now how weak that NIE Report was just about two years ago.

Obama sees the flexing of Russia with EUrope feeling the energy mafia. He see the US lead in Space stumbling. He now realizes that hitting Pakistan is not sole answer as the Taliban take new territory since the rise of the Moderates Obama heralded. He knows that Hizb'Allah is building lethal offenses under the nose of the UN. He sees the threat to his own relatives in Kenya.

He knows his stimulus plan will push deficits so high, how will increase defense, send aid and stand up to both America’s adversaries and America's lenders?

SO I hope Obama understands that it wasn't so much whether Bush grasped the full meaning of the daily briefing, but whether America gets it. I have some hope that Obama will decide to make peace with the GOP to the Left's dismay. Armed with moderate Republicans, Obama will have the numbers to steer center and keep force on the table. Like Kennedy, he will have his tests. As I listen to blogworld, it seems many Liberals are disappointed with Obama.

I suggest they stay away from that bus.

Here is what is happening in Gaza. Many LIberals won't face the facts. I was hardly comfortable with Obama's record on the subject, but since going center, he seems to get it. Maybe others can too.

Israel agreed to a ceasefire in Lebanon after Hizb'Allah attacked Israeli soldiers and they moved to crush the terrorists. The UN mandate that sent Israel packing was to disarm militants and keep weapons out. What a friggin joke. The UN can't even triangulate those firing a missile at Israel less that 4.5 miles away from their headquarters.

Carter says Israel should just bomb the tunnels. What garbage. Carter lies when he pretends he doesn't know many ways the weapons flow into Gaza. That is why Carter and others are propagandists. Ban goes to Gaza? And talk with who? THe UN considers Hamas a terror group...LOL Not one word from the noble Left when Hamas militants drag children shields as the IDF approaches. They keep families in booby=trapped buildings. They put munitions next to hospitals and mortars in mosques. They are terrorists using chaos now to kill Fatah, but yall make them equals.

There were global sanctions on Gaza BECAUSE of the Hamas charter, record and actions. Simple enough? The Palestinians elected a terror group and the world answered back. Let's be honest please, many posting here want Israel to go away, to vanish. Given Iranian and AQ designs, the irony is mind-numbing.

And the Past has long since blown away. This is it baby......He will start walking a mine field. 120. Yeah tt, We go from watching the media handle Clinton, Obama, Palin to Israel.

UNwar was asked why a video showing militants firing mortars at Israel from a UN school in 2007 was never investigated. Now they call for investigation of the UN school incident? Despite two militants dying from return volley from the IDF at the UN school, witnesses claiming weapons were in the school and secondary explsions indicted booby traps, media prints the story they want. How about the CPR story they later retracted?. The NYT wanted none of the truth as they ran stories on white phosphorous supported by comments from a Norwegian doctor in Gaza who though 9/11 was a good thing. He's Mads...

    Posted by: maxtrue | January 13, 2009 8:33 PM

  121. Me too, Jack. About your nephew.

I also worry that "Iraq" is something Obama will have to own from Day One, whether he likes it or not. And if he withdraws too quickly, and that country descends into chaos, that it will be blamed on him .... not Bush and Cheney.

Sort of like Vietnam. No one blames Ike and Kennedy much. Just LBJ, who knew from the beginning it was a losing cause, and Nixon...who (Obama-like) only wanted out, and nothing else.

    I'm worried.

Champ, The ones who stayed put instead of believing the surrounding countries encouraging them to leave so that Israel could be driven into the sea are still there with their families in their homes. They are Israeli citizens and make up about 20% of the population.

Alternative. If the surrounding Arab countries had taken in the Palestinians who had left Israel at their behest rather than refusing admittance and confining them to those camps so that there was an anti Israel talking point, then they would have lives as citizens of other places.

All Israel did was build a modern, democratic nation surrounded by enemies while defending itself. Have there been bad things done by the Israelis, definitely, but the fault lies with those who don't want peace and are not willing to negotiate in good faith and then abide by the agreements made.

You seem to thrive on defining and characterizing the inter-personal drama that's predictably generated here on a daily basis, even when you're not involved in the original discussions.

Just as a scientific exercise, maybe you should ignore the drama for awhile. Just be yourself and post your own original thoughts on issues of the day instead of worrying so much about the interactions (or perceived, out-of-context wounds) of others, at whatever point you choose to log in.

For instance, the other day you dinged me for "dropping a bomb" and then scramming out. That's not my style. I own my comments on this place, totally. It annoyed me for you to imply otherwise.

I just don't have all day to monitor every single reaction to every single thing I post. But I do try to come in later and mop up (or apologize, when need be) later.

  139. I wasn't referring to Lard's post to Chloe. (I don't think she is a Drama Queen at all.) Nor do I have a beef with Lard. I think they have often misunderstood the others' posts.

Patsi--LOL. No problem. I don't expect you to get between me and Chloe.

Chloe...you should just relax. You pissed me off, I pissed you off, but I don't that should mean the end of the relationship. Whatever.

    Solar...

    Nothing sinister or showing off.

I was welcoming back a long lost member of the tribe--MaxTrue.

He was here long before you, and could definitely rival you in the lengths of posts (and complaints about them).

I hope you two will chat at some point.

Posted by: LardassLiberal Author Profile Page | January 13, 2009 9:06 PM

  146. I will add that Max was the one who caught flak for the cut and paste. As it turned out he was a wonderful conversationalist even when you disagree with him after he gave up that habit.

I did lurk for a long time before posting,,,,and said on a few occasioins that Max was an excellent poster. I don't think that there any shabby posters here other than me,,,do you agree.??

  152. Solar,

You are not a shabby poster. You are a thoughtful generous spirit. It's not you that anyone is objecting to, it is the cut and paste that could just be summarized and linked so that we would know the point you are making and could refer to the longer article at leisure.

Henry IV, part I, which beat any other historical play in history. (sorry Oliver Stone)

And the Tempest...best and darkest of all of the comedies.

  169. Solar,

If someone only read the quote without knowing what preceded or followed it, it sounded a little strange. I defended you because I did see it all and knew that the comments were innocent. Dooty may not have. In any case, he is a fair man and I'm sure doesn't mean you ill in any way.

Now, printing something out and then typing it verbatim doesn't change the fact that it is the equivalent of cut and paste, you are just doing it the hard way. All I can say is that you are much more interesting and readable when you are talking for yourself.

You will note that virtually everyone else uses the comment and link method in order to keep the conversation moving rapidly and not throwing a log jam into the middle of everything.

    Hey Solar
I know sometimes for me especially in the beginning of my time here at TM I felt inferior being among all these smart literate folks.I enjoy being around smart folks even though I'm just a lunch bucket type assembly line worker who now cleans for a living. I love to learn thats why I'm here and learn I have. That said, I have felt the looking down your nose feeling your talking about and it hurts. I think those who do that do so out of a need to feel superior, sad for them because it means their listening ears are off sometimes.I wish for you to keep on doing what you do and thats be yourself and keep telling us what you feel on the subjects and political news thats important to you.IMO thats the purpose of this blog.. So Blog On... Oh and Hell yes I'm being supportive!! Words cost nothing..........

    Solar,

at 25 stories up I would be quivering jello begging you to help me crawl down to safety, and believe me I would be on all fours creeping from arm hold to arm hold. I won't even go near windows in skyscrapers.

  184. does anyone here still believe JFKerry was a worse choice than WBush in 2004?

Posted by: DexterJohnson Author Profile Page | January 14, 2009 12:34 AM

  185. Thanks Jamie, but I think my fault was post length. I tried not to cut and paste too much.

Here's a thought. Obama said that the lessons of Iraq would not be transferred to Afghanistan. Although Biden admitted a surge of sorts was necessary, the Great Awakening was not the way to go. These two were adamant there WAS NO LESSON FROM IRAQ. And look who is running our military hopes in Afghanistan. How ironic….Watch as Obama co-opts Clinton and Bush. Here is what I am talking about.

    http://www.ottawacitizen.com/opinion/op-ed/Lessons+from+Iraq/1173272/story.html

As far as Pakistan, Obama was wrong about the moderates. If he actually went forward with his threats Pakistan would crumble as the Taliban gained. Watch as he co-opts Clinton and Bush with additional surge added to the mix.

Obama ran against missile defense. Mow reality has set in and missile defense will go forward including freezing a new type of destroyer for more Aegis destroyers that can project missile defense.

Obama now must confront a developing nexus between Sudan, Somalia into the Middle East. THis is one way weapons go into Gaza. While he pushes for a fresh start, Turkey is holding suspect Iranian cargo via Hugo. Syria is going forward with nuke sites with Iran and NK support.

What we are seeing in not only must Obama move towards Hillary who he beat by painting her the conservative, but also Bush.

What this shows is that by Obama faking it with his voters, media helping out and the GOP running a lame campaign, Obama won. This is not an attack on Obama, but rather a simple observation. It does highlight the differences between a pragmatic egoist and a more principled idealist.

Already Hillary is getting flack for her remarks today. While we won't be seeing illegals with driver licenses anytime soon, we will see more of the same. The reason is that there are very sound ideas underlying American policy. It need adjustment and innovation, but it is borne from objective facts.

Those daily briefing Craig have made an impact on Obama. Yes, perhaps this is a critical evolution over Bush. Despite eight years of Mr. Brain, without Saddam and with Sunnis rejecting AQ and countering Iran, possibilities open up for a strong, determined Administration. I can only hope there will be made more Obama throws under the bus.

  187. "I'm really surprised to read/hear anyone hear state that liars and word-twisters etc should not be allowed to practice their craft in the media."

Bethy -- I think the point of what was said regarding presenting two sides was misinterpreted. No one suggested people be banned from speaking. But when people are lying -- as in that swiftboat episode -- they must be called out on it. To allow continual lying in the name of fairness is indredibly dangerous.

For example, it bothers me a great deal that in the name of "fairness" C-Span almost never corrects people calling in with information that has already been discredited.

By allowing those statements to stand, a great segment of the population then repeats it as gospel.

That is how civilizations become based on untruths.
