Bush's List

| | Comments (105)

No president wants to dwell on his mistakes while leaving office, but George W. Bush certainly left a few things out when asked for a list during his final press conference.

"Clearly, putting 'Mission Accomplished' on an aircraft carrier was a mistake," he said. Bush confessed that "some of my rhetoric" was mistaken. He admitted to miscalculation in trying to overhaul Social Security. Abuses at the Abu Graib detention camp were regrettable, the outgoing chief executive said. Oh, and not finding those weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was a blooper, Bush acknowledged.

Bush's failings go much deeper. Historians take a long time to render final judgments. But an early sounding conducted by researchers at George Mason University found sobering results for Bush. More than 100 professional historians around the country were asked to rank all presidents and 61 percent said Bush was the worst of them all. Even more -- 98 percent -- rated his presidency a failure.

What makes a lousy president? At least three factors were shared by some of our worst chief executives, according to the university study -- the paranoia of Richard Nixon, the poor ethics of Warren Harding and the faulty judgment of Herbert Hoover.

Bush combined all three. His administration was marked by a paranoid obsession with secrecy, a dismissive attitude toward ethics and a lack of competence highlighted by an ill-conceived invasion of Iraq that led to a miserably managed occupation.

The list goes on.

I heard part of his press conference on NPR.... he sounded like a teenager trying to justify his behavior.....

now how do so many voters justify their behavior..... they voted for this man twice....

Jax, You might be pleasantly surprised. Just by virtue of everyone having access to well care, hospital costs would drop. The estimate now is that it would save about 25% of the cost of current insurance. You could buy some nice supplemental insurance with that money. Remember you would be entitled to all the benefits of the base plan and would be paying extra for things such as avoiding waiting times and your choice of physicians.

Bush is saying the jury is still out on the Washington presidency. Somehow I doubt that. He's just hoping that in time even historians won't remember how poorly he did as our executive. Apparently he doesn't know that "they" keep records of what goes on in our nation and that historians look through those records when they write about the past.

Call me skeptical....I'm not aware of a single gov't program that ever saved anyone any money or lowered costs....ever

I understand your wish that this would work. It would be great. But I simply don't believe them. I for one will fight this as long as possible for myself, my family and my employees. I've asked all of my employees and they have indicated that would be willing to take paycuts to keep from going on a gov't plan...

It's useless to blame anyone for electing a politician.
All we can do is listen, make a decision and cross our fingers. I've never voted for a politician that I agreed with wholeheartedly. Probably the best is about 60%.

I voted for McCain and couldn't stand him because I don't like one party controlling house senate and presidency. I liked less than 30% of PEO or McCains policies. But I still voted.....grimaced....but voted...:)

they have no choice but to go along with this form of intimidation ,,,,Oh sure boss food, gas , fuel, are real cheap right now----you go ahead and take it out of my check--and lastly ----I did not know that you could have a means test for employees ---they have to reject Government programs in order to work for someone??

"Why Obama is Causing a Liberal Freakout"

"Even worse for the Left, Obama advisers are now signaling, says the New York Times, "that they may put off renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement, overhauling immigration laws, restricting carbon emissions, raising taxes on the wealthy and allowing gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military." You know, like, pretty much the very heart and soul of the liberal policy agenda. Even healthcare reform might only be getting what aides call a “down payment” as a "sign of dedication to the broader goals." Let the wretching begin, Daily Kossacks. (Fun Fact: Obama gave his big economic speech at George Mason University, a bastion of free-market scholarship.)"

  36. I do believe that government programs can save money. I was a diabetes educator for 6 years. I developed and ran an outpatient diabetes education center. At the time I was a clinical nurse specialist working on a cardiac ward .

They used the CNSs to do health education. As an educator, I recognized that trying to teach a patient with a new diabetes diagnosis in the hospital broke all the rules of education. Most of the patients were both very ill and in denial.

At that time Medicare was one of the first programs that covered the costs of diabetes education and blood glucose monitoring. Now most insurances do. Without education and blood sugar monitoring it is impossible to manage diabetes and managing diabetes does decrease complications, very costly ones.

I found that there were several times when Medicare set the pace for changes needed in healthcare. They did screw up on that prescription bill.

  40. Something for Solar, our religious education director:

    WHO DOES WHAT

A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.

The wife said, 'You should do it because you get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee.

The husband said, 'You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.'

Wife replies, 'No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.'

Husband replies, 'I can't believe that, show me.'

So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says 'HEBREWS'

I've been pondering this. If someone would give you $500000, hown fast could you have workers on site working?

I was thinking about the stymulus package and it occurred to me that every city a a group of CDC's that arer crying for fundsand most of them have relationships with contractors they could put to work. The processes are all in place to identify and hand out the money as well as the QC needed to assure the money was properly used.

Also, every city has a list of projects just sitting on the self ready to be implimented. Curbs and sidewalks as an example. I could identify in 15 min. enough sidewalks that need to be replaced to keep a contractor busy for years.

It is very hard for me to just think about work ,and not get to it (put it off til later) I like to have a few balls up in the air at the same time-----the balancing of them,,,and having something come out right,,,is more of a reward than the actual money,,,I love the planning of some project ----could take a cple of months,,,,and than the execution ---coordination of doing it, the ups and downs that come with the project,,,,working with people that respect you,,and know that they come come first,,most of all,,,you always know what kind of person you are,,,,,,this kind of work measures you in all things.

  79. Jax - water flows and ice comes in floes - I think.

Also, Jax, I understand why you say/believe the things you say/believe. At times I could almost say/believe it myself, but then my mind realizes that problems would not cease with that attitude.

Sauve qui peut? What about insuring domestic tranquility? How does that promote the general welfare? Carnegie's and Morgan's type of capitalism is not mandated by the Consistution - it kinda
evolved and would today be even more vulnerable to the kinds of diseases it creates.

Sauve qui peut will create at least one underclass, which will create pleanty of violence and more disease.
It will kill domestic tranquility and make a mockery out of the term general welfare. That is exactly what history is - a repetition of failed states and societies that ordered cake for those who couldn't figure it out for themselves.

To me it works along the same lines that Africans were to stupid to read and were therfore inferior and needed special orders and guidance. I guarantee you will find almost those exact words in much of the writings defending slavery.

As I said, I understand the impulse to think like that - let 'em figure it out for themselves. I also feel that you have every right to fight for what you think is the best way.

I just don't think it's in sync with our constitution.

I know that you mostly log on at night---so I have been waiting to tell you how badly I felt,,,that you felt the need to come and explain about the long post's ----there was no need to, since I was the one that abused it,,,,thank you for explaining your thoughts on it----it is exactly the reason that I do it also,,,,sometimes I feel that what I say won't come across,,,unless I explain it some more,,,mine are mostly repetitive , and sometimes not to the point, that I want to make,,,,but yours are always right on,,,,thanks for the cover though "-)

  83. "having something come out right,,,is more of a reward than the actual money"

Yeah Solar, but the money is also an important part of the reward. Both to you and to your employees. It's what makes the next project possible.

If you don't enjoy your work, giving it your all, taking pride in the results, then there's no satisfaction or money reward anyway (at least for long).

All those things you talked about, the things that you think are important, say great things about your character.

    nite.

  90. Cooooold up your way! My mom was from Oak Park and my nephew now lives up there. I alway loved visiting up there. Chicago has some of the best eating places in the country, maybe even better than we have down here.

  91. Solar - I wasn't giving you cover. I just wanted to step up and take my punishment - HA!

Oh, yeah. I voted for Nixon twice and don't feel bad about it at all. The very fact that conservatives hated Nixon should explain why.

I have never got on a bandwagon behind a politican - I have no illusions about what the job is and the kind of people it attracts, and what one has to do and be to get there.

I really don't get emotional about the rallies etc. I never really understood the hysteria about JFK - he seemed to be nothing but appeals to emotion, just like Reagan. That's why I wasn't impressed by Obama. That's why Obama made my decision for me to vote for HRC. I'm pretty cold-blooded about it.

That doesn't mean I wasn't devastated by JFK's murder. It also doesn't mean I don't realize the worth of having an African-American president. It is the best thing about this past election.

There is a place that is called Nino's Pizza,,,I bar tended there about thirty years ago-----it is still the same---clean but it has a Wisconsin feel to it,( you know wide open-lots of people know each other ----=the waitress fight over our tables when we go there,,,lots of fun---the owner sees us and tells everyone to liven up or get out cos we are going to be a little loud,,,,than he joins us),,,every thing is excellent,,,I take my workers there for a huge Pizza called the Sicilian special,,,he has a sauce that was brought over from Italy----along with, some hug shrimp,,,and calamari ,,,,then they give us huge frosted mug of you fav. beer,,,,not too many places that can beat it ,,,,The North side Of Chicago can't be beat for a diff. ethnic (original meal )...yep we have great food around here,,,,,Oak Park ---is very good also,,,,lot of rib joints,,,family style.

  93. 61% say Bush is THE WORST?
'Til my dying day I will never understand how he got a second term. Never.
What did he do to deserve a second term? Nothing. Nada.
This is why I was surprised that somehow the Supreme Court didn't invalidate the recent election and give it to McInsane.
8 days and he's done, the prick. Good riddance.

  94. Bethy----thanks----I know that you were not providing cover,,,just being you-----having never voted for anyone other than the natural law party ( Professor Hagelin) this time for the green party,,,,I don't get very emotional about it either,,,,about appeals and emotions,,,,I could not agree with you more----I remember thinking,,,,if it wasn't for Reagan s star appeal----he was not a very good candidate for POTUS------But what really takes my wind----is how much $ is needed to run for office,,,and now even at the local level,,,,amazing to me,,,and a waste of money in greedy hands,,,,,but

    Hi Solar
I know how hard its been to wait for the healing of the injury so that you can begin exercising again,it seems like an eternity but wait you must.Take it slow because you won't be farther ahead if you re-injure yourself. Luckily during my injuries I always had my stair-stepper and treadmill for comfort.Glad your son has helped because seeing things undone because of being injured makes it even worse...Your fit I'm sure, please be patient

  97. So Mr. Bush remained true to form and pointedly did not call on Helen Thomas during his final press conference! Even though he is now trying to burnish his legacy by admitting, yes, he did make one or two little mistakes, maybe, he continues to demonstrate his cluelessness and lack of class, first by snubbing the Obamas, refusing them rooms at Blair House, and now by snubbing Ms. Thomas. The next eight days cannot pass quickly enough.

I have decided to leave my Christmas wreath up until the inauguration - as a gesture of safety for all, and will take it down after the swearing in,
