So the Illinois governor thinks he can beat impeachment by going on ABC's "The View" and saying he would have put Oprah in the Senate if he only knew her phone number? We can't make this up.
Even more absurd is Oprah's response: "I think I'd be a great senator too. I'm just not interested."
Give Oprah credit for being smarter than Caroline Kennedy. At least the talk show diva knew better than to express interest in a Senate seat before anyone thought of appointing her - and for making sure that the relevant governor who could appoint her did not have her phone number.

This little cat (I'm calling her Miss Girl) is still POd because I won't let her outside -- but I am SO glad I got the heads up yesterday and brought her in! When I went to bed, it wasn't bad -- no rain, cold but not terrible. Under those circumstances I might have let her out...she does like to prowl at night.
On the other hand, my son-in-law has to drive from Bowling Green to Nashville this morning...hope Kentucky is okay. Back when I made the Kansas trip every Christmas, Kentucky roads in the winter (especially the Land Between the Lakes) were often treacherous.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said today the state's second U.S. Senate seat should remain vacant until Gov. Rod Blagojevich is impeached and a new appointment can be certified. "At this point we've clearly reached an impasse," Durbin told reporters at his Chicago office. Durbin said a candidate for the job must have signatures from the governor and secretary of state on his certification papers. Secretary of State Jesse White has not certified Roland Burris.

"World News" led with Pres. Obama issuing two presidential memoranda dealing with the environment. "Evening News" led with massive layoffs. "Nightly News" led with massive layoffs.
IL Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) continued to make the TV rounds. Some highlights from his appearances:
Blagojevich, asked if he is a dirty pol: "No, I'm a very honest politician and I see myself -- and you can laugh and call this delusional -- but when all the facts come out you will see that I'm right."
ABC's McFadden: "But your political career is over now, wouldn't you agree to that?"
Blagojevich: "Well, I think it's not very promising right now and to be put in a place in the not too distant future, where I'll be looking for another livelihood, but I'm not as important..."
McFadden: "No, but I mean all these big dreams. You talked about running for president in 2016. That's over isn't it?"
Blagojevich: "Let me say that, things are taken out of context and what I have to do now is focus on doing the best I can while I'm still the governor of Illinois."

BTW, Patsi, those are some highfalutin green beans you make. OSH, I tend to just use the ham seasoning (hock or bacon, depending on what I have), plus salt and pepper. Boil 'em until you think you've boiled them too long, then boil them for another half hour. If you've got a pressure cooker, use it.

The widow of musical icon Buddy Holly will receive expanded royalties, fees and her name on a new local park under the terms of the contract the Lubbock City Council approved with little public discussion Monday.
Lubbock will pay Maria Elena Holly $20,000 in license fees and increase her royalty income by an estimated $80,000 over the 20-year life of the contract, according to city staff estimates.

Buddy's whole family hated her guts. Her only job for 50 years has been "grieving widow", with a royalty contract to blot away the tears.

Jack,
The major problem with those stats is that all those people with smaller families and longer lives now want a lifestyle similar to the "developed" countries of the 1960s when there were 6 billion people. You now have more than three billion more people today (almost 7 billion expected to go to 9 by 2025) who want to eat, live, and work in a world unable to support a middle class lifestyle.
This is one of the major causes of the economic downturn in the world ... spreading fewer and fewer "necessary" jobs over a larger and larger population and corporations willing to get it's labor at the cheapest possible cost.
All that growth is catching up with us. Of course this is how the bubonic plague helped create the middle class and why serfdom is making a come back.

Jack, Economics may not be finite, but resources are. They aren't making any more land, water, or air.
Now if you just want to argue economics, the average middle class wage is starting to fall. The trend is even now catching up with some of the higher paid white collar jobs. The women have been sent to work so that it now takes two incomes to create the lifestyle of their parents.
The corporations lay off their higher paid workers and then "can't find" anyone to do the job, so they import them from India for a few thousand less a year. Microsoft has been screaming that they need more H1B Visas, but they just had a layoff.
Just because it hasn't caught up with you yet, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

In 1960, the typical middleclass family lived in an 1100 sq ft house owned one car, had one black and white , rabbit ear tv that picked up 3 channels. one phone line with a black rotory dial phone, dined out at most once a week.
Show me a modern middleclass family that would accept such deprivation.

Old Sea -
I read your link the other day about the Cape Wind Project, and I want to thank you for posting it. I was aware of the ongoing battle over it, but I never looked into the details. I didn't sign the petition however.
Here's just one reason why -
Under threats to the sound :
Unfortunately, Nantucket Sound is vulnerable to activities that degrade the special qualities that make it such an important part of our regional coastal ecosystem. Overuse, pollution, and habitat loss are stressing natural systems beyond their capacity to cope and leading to environmental degradation.
The primary threats to the Sound are from septic system discharge, storm water and fertilizer runoff, discharge of vessel sewage, development in near shore and offshore waters, and deposits of airborne nitrogen from air pollution.
--------------------------
Jack Welch's golf course on Nantucket is a lot harder on the sound that the towers for these turbines will be. In fact, as soon as they are installed , sea life will begin to make a home around each one of them.

In Denmark, a nation that derives about 20% of its electricity from wind power, electricity costs are roughly three times higher than the US average.
---------------------------------
Denmark isn't sitting on the world's largest coal reserves. In fact, if Denmark hadn't moved on wind power, their electrical costs would be far higher.
The site makes big point that wind power is intermittent, and therefore not viable. But the wind resource map for the U.S. shows that the wind blows there more than the here. In fact it's rated at 6.3 out of possible 7.

If the wind is so spotty there , how does Ted Kennedy's sail boat move around ?
Now as to the motives for the developers, that I don't know enough about. I'm sure they have padded their claims as well. I do have one question if you could let me know ? Will they be paying property taxes to the state of Mass. ?

Jack,
Africa is a very large continent. The starvation just keeps moving.
http://www.asiantribune.com/?q=node/13962
Of course that still doesn't change the problems of pollution and limited resources. For Africa the increasing desertification is another member of the list of problems. Then there is AIDS, Biafra, Civil War, blood diamonds, and petroleum production that impoverishes the natives while enriching the rulers ... just a huge fun park of economic interests

Jack -
Pick another country , Bangledesh is going to be under water pretty soon, and all those people are going to be on the move.
No other large population center is going to be affected as soon what we will see out of Bangledesh.

Jack,
In 1964 I had a four bedroom home in a nice suburb that two people in their early 20s were able to buy for 3,000 down on a 21,900 mortgage. Of there were two kids, two telephones, two cars, two jobs ... sorry only one color TV.
That home recently sold for 500,000 and I don't know many couples in their 20s who could have afforded the down payment.
Tell me again how good we have it now?

I was 15 in 1960. I got a drivers license that year. We moved into a big house that my dad built. 3 bedrooms. Mom had a car and dad had a truck. I am pretty sure we had at least 2 telephones in that house. One in the kitchen and one in Mom and Dads bedroom. I got a truck later that same year when my grandfather sold me his 1951 5 window Chevy truck. We did only have one TV and of course it was black and white.

Dramatic Expansion Of Dead Zones In Oceans Likely With Unchecked Global Warming
ScienceDaily (Jan. 26, 2009) — Unchecked global warming would leave ocean dwellers gasping for breath. Dead zones are low-oxygen areas in the ocean where higher life forms such as fish, crabs and clams are not able to live. In shallow coastal regions, these zones can be caused by runoff of excess fertilizers from farming. A team of Danish researchers have now shown that unchecked global warming would lead to a dramatic expansion of low-oxygen areas zones in the global ocean by a factor of 10 or more.

Bob, having traveled extensively on wind driven vessels along the coast of Maine (and from NJ to ME as well, but not as extensively)- which is remarkably similar to the coast of MA, but with a WHOLE lot fewer folks - I can say that wind is what drove the coasting trade until the age of steamships, and there's enough wind on the MA coast that it is literally the epicenter of East Coast recreational sailing. (Sorry NYYC, but it's true). Yeah, wind is variable everywhere - it's kind of its nature, but it's also very dependable in the sense that it comes with pretty fair regularity even though it isn't constant. Will there be disturbance of the ocean environment? Of course - particularly in the construction phase - but that occurs no matter the activity, and IMHO wind generation of energy is a pretty beneficial use. Fact is, wind generation is a huge modern day NIMBY project - they've been fighting it tooth and nail in Preston County WV, but it hasn't ruined the mountains there. Fair disclosure - I'm an advocate of wind power.

NIMBYites were active during every major infrastructure shift during the last century. Some examples--turnpikes, high-tension electric cables, reservoirs, airports and canals.
The Founders were prescient when they allowed for constitutional takings. Now, all we need are politicians willing to take the heat by doing what is in the best interests of our people.

Flatus, true enough. The trick, of course, is finding politicians who know what activities are in the best interests of the people.

Gibbs is sure a welcome change from Dana! He knows how to laugh with people - so far he's more pleasant to watch than any of them for years. I did like Joe Lockhart, tho.
