Big Money for a Big Inaugural

| | Comments (109)

Small donors played a big role in getting Barack Obama elected, but they are in the back seat when it comes to funding his inaugural. The President-Elect's planning team is relying on the wealthiest contributors to meet its $45 million goal for what is shaping up to be the most expensive inaugural week in history.

Democrats could hardly be expected to downplay finally re-taking the White House after eight years out of power there. But you'd think something more modest would be in order during these rough economic times, even if most of the money is not coming from the federal treasury.

CQ Weekly reports that at least 70 percent of the money is coming from 375 donors giving the maximum allowed: $50,000 each. Only about 1 percent of the total comes from those giving less than $1,000, although in recent days the Obama team began sending emails to small givers in hopes of boosting that percentage. They're even running a lottery for those who respond with at least $5, offering a chance to win a trip to the inauguration. Presumably, the $50,000 donors get guaranteed seating.

  3. The Obama folks would like you to believe the small donors played a big partin getting him elected...IMO from the things I have read, they did not. At least not as a percentage of the total.

  18. Craig, correct me if I'm wrong :0) but isn't every new inauguration the most expensive inauguration? It seems that for at least the last few incoming PEOTUS they have had the "most expensive ever". One needs to take in account the costs of materials and etc and how they change over the years. Like implying that Batman Returns is a better movie than say, Gone with the Wind because it pulled in more money on opening weekend (compare a .25 ticket to a $10.00 one). Can anyone out there with a quick calculator find out how much it cost per person for Obama's inauguration? I bet it won't be so expensive looked at that way!

  25. CA Lawyer to Challenge Obama on Every Action, American Thinker: “Birth Certificate Issue is Legitimate”

"... Gary Kreep, chief counsel of Keyes v. Bowen and chief of the United States Justice Foundation, is reportedly going to continuously challenge Barack Obama on his citizenship issue well past inauguration on “every order, every proposal, every piece of paperwork” the to-be President produces.

“Should Senator Obama be discovered, after he takes office, to be ineligible ... his election declared void, Petitioners, as well as other Americans, will suffer irreparable harm in that (a) usurper will be sitting as the President of the United States, and none of the treaties, laws, or executive orders signed by him will be valid or legal,” the action challenges.

Kreep told WND today he’s now working with several groups that could serve as plaintiffs to challenge Obama’s actions, even from the Oval Office, should the issue remain in dispute."

There are two kinds of US citizens: Natural born and naturalized. If we can agree that Barack Obama is a US citizen, the only remaining question is was he ever naturalized?

I'm guessing that answer is no. Welcome, President Obama.

Rosie, It is split responsibility. The President gets a stipend to redecorate the private apartments but they do have access to all of the historical and artistic holdings of the nation to draw upon that are then returned to storage or exhibit once they are through with them.

The private expenses for food and such for themselves and their guests are paid for by the family, but official entertainment is paid for from the White House budget and other budgets cover the salaries and upkeep or repair of the mansion.

Private donations are often gathered for gifts by the first family to the nation such as when Jackie gathered antique furnishings for the White House and the various sets of China.

The First Lady is the one who usually sets the themes for Christmas. In other words, a lot of things are paid for in a whole variety of ways.

Chef Shiela would know more about such things.

"Not to be outdone, lawyer-author Edwin Vieira told the gathering that Kennedy should be impeached because his philosophy, evidenced in his opinion striking down an anti-sodomy statute, "upholds Marxist, Leninist, satanic principles drawn from foreign law."

Ominously, Vieira continued by saying his "bottom line" for dealing with the Supreme Court comes from Joseph Stalin. "He had a slogan, and it worked very well for him, whenever he ran into difficulty: 'no man, no problem,' " Vieira said.

The full Stalin quote, for those who don't recognize it, is "Death solves all problems: no man, no problem." Presumably, Vieira had in mind something less extreme than Stalin did and was not actually advocating violence. But then, these are scary times for the judiciary. An anti-judge furor may help confirm President Bush's judicial nominees, but it also has the potential to turn ugly."

  38. Obama Knew he Wasn't Eligible for POTUS

"Barack Obama has submitted only a Certification of Live Birth, but Hawaii law will certify a live birth using that document for births that occurred even outside of the country. Furthermore, Barack Obama’s father was Kenyan and never an American citizen. Since the status of citizenship occurs at birth, this makes Barack Obama a citizen if born in Hawaii, but not a natural born citizen. One must have two citizen parents, at the time of birth, and be born on U.S. soil, to be deemed a natural born citizen and be declared eligible for the presidency. The Senate, for all their trouble, cannot legislate a person’s born status. It happens at birth, according to the law."

I'm heading out now, but I'll look back later to see if you told me why I'm wrong about the two types of US citizen. I didn't see any listing of a third type.

I will say that the continual arguments about the circumstances of Obama's birth have led me to believe that the qualifications for president need to be updated. I've always felt the requirement was reasonable because we should be able to find qualified people among US natives, but this argument makes that qualification totally specious.

The man received something like 53% of the vote. Where he was born, or who his parents were, seems hardly significant at this point.

Rez, They also forget that the reason it was written that way was because people who were citizens of the geography that became the US were often in areas of under the jurisdiction of other principalities whether Europe or areas governed by France or Spain in the New World and they had to cover any children that might be born to them if away from home on long journeys given the transportation facilities available.

By tradition (as affirmed recently for John McCain), it has come to mean any child born in the geography of the U.S., it's possessions or military/embassy installations. or having a parent who is a citizen of the United States. It does not include any naturalized after their birth such as a first generation immigrant like Schwarzenneger.

Obama was born in Hawaii a state of the United States and his mother was a US citizen. He is eligible.

But hatred loves conspiracies so I suppose Gordo and crowd will continue in their delusion. As long as one or them doesn't take up irrational violence, they are just useless irritants.

  48. Gordo.... Please you distract...
So Barack was born in the US - so he is a citizen. Even if what you claim is true he would still qualify.
(I cannot believe I am responding)

  49. Hey Gordo - think of this...

It may be more sinister then simple birth place…. Who knows how deep this conspiracy goes?

What if they really do not know who the parents are and this nice lady found him just wandering or in a basket. And she made up the story of the dad.

And in truth an evil tribe sent him as a future plant to disrupt the American way - A voodoo that gave him special gifts of communication and caring – a secret weapon.

And to show how smart they are even in this scenario he still qualifies because Any one found in the U.S. under the age of five, whose parentage cannot be determined, as long as proof of non-citizenship is not provided by age 21 can and now will be President of the US.

What are we going to do…
Maybe we should have a common sense test to keep citizenship or at least vote?

No but they could stop starting things by attacking first every time, and violating every agreement they have ever been given a chance to uphold. They could stop importing weapons from Iran, and signing up kids to blow themselves up in the middle of Israeli civilians.

They could also stop stock piling weapons among civilians that they are using as human shields so that they can take pictures of the dead bodies to show the world.

  60. Ya know, I haven't said anything so far because I really had nothing I particularly wanted to say, but now I do have a comment to make.

It's beginning to wear on me when I start reading a comment to reach the strident and almost violent anger of one of Gordo's post. I immediately scroll down, but that doesn't help - I still can sense his hatred. It was one thing when there was voting going on, but it's over. I just wish Gordo would spend his time posting with people who already agree with him - he is certainly not going to convert anyone here.

I had an uncle who somehow or other got in with the Bob Jones philosophy - anit u.n,and the era etc. We had an argument once about the term "wing" as in right and left. He stated that right wing meant no government control; and left meant complete government control. No other way of looking at it was possible. I explained to thim that the terms had come from which side of a room the parties were sitting on and he would have none of it.

My father told me later that he had been prepared to jump in and was pleasantly surprised that I had handled it - I was youngish at the time.

My uncle never did change his ideas and didn't need to but I also didn't want to be condemned to listen to him.
I loved him and he was a nice guy, but we didn't have to exchange pollitical feelings.

At the same time, I don't want the constitution to be changed yet. Some day it will be, and should be, but not yet. I want a president who has grown up with the feeling that she/he is American with all the goods and bads that go with being American - thinking "our" way and taking the same things for granted. We need to be a little different from the rest of the world, a little varied to keep the mix vibrant. I'm not really a xenophobe, tho maybe it sounds like it - variety is the spice of life.

I agree that the US attack on Iraq caused a rush to join terrorist groups, but Iraq didn't shoot at us. The ones who struck the US had nothing to do with Iraq.

Israel did not attack Gaza until their people were being assaulted. They have not been the aggressors since 1948 unless they were attacked first.

Arabs and others from the surrounding country have a long noble history and seem to be people of adequate brain power. You would think that at some point in 60 years they would figure out that if they stopped trying to wipe out Israel, that they could live in peace.

  66. They're not interested in living in peace. They want their land back. The likelihood of such a result is questionable at best, but one things for certain; platitudes won't end the conflict.

  67. "Early presidential and parliamentary election to the Palestinian National Authority will be held as soon as the split between the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip under PM Ismail Haniyeh and the Fatah-controlled West Bank under PM Salam Fayyad and President Mahmoud Abbas has been overcome, according to statements by Abbas. The elections would be due by 2009 (presidential) and 2010 (legislative) if not held early, although reports in December 2008 suggested that both elections would be held in April 2009."

Should be interesting. If Hamas wins a majority again, I wouldn't think that would bode well for any peace process, ceteris paribus.

  71. It's a tough job, but someone needs to do it.

Some of you promote yourselves as being so very informed -- you know who you are (hint: Filipino). You are living in a "as seen on TV world." Your knowledge of SoetorObama is amazingly lacking in depth.

If SoetorObama was not born in HI and irrefutable evidence of that fact is in the possession of someone or some government -- he is subject to blackmail.

There is much more to the SoetorObama story -- much more than any of you know or could understand. Have been trying to keep it simple, because even that is too much for most of you to deal with.

You think that is humorous, but about three days after I got my new computer with VISTA (may the person who invented it burn for at least a thousand years), it ate all of the family photos that had been transferred from my old computer to the new one.

I have no idea where they went and nothing I've searched is there. It is probably in some deep hole on the hard drive or wandering around the tubes. Need to rescan everything and don't have a scanner at present.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | January 17, 2009 9:13 PM

  79. Jamie,
I agree with you about Vista. I imagine those pictures are there somewhere, but good luck finding them. Luckily you have the original pictures to scan. And hopefully they're still stored on your old computer. (?)

    From Piriform:

"Recuva (pronounced "recover") is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses."

    Posted by: GORDO | January 18, 2009 12:24 AM

  98. Rez - either you're reading me wrong or I wasn't careful enough with my words. I like Ping but don agree with him on much politically. I definitely do not want scotus to delve into the bush administration and its doings. What I want is for more of the truth to come out than we have seen so far. and that means some investigation.
I want what bush has done to be studied and written about for years, and it will be.

I agree with the dangers of a crisis of confidence and witch hunts. I posted about that yesterday - I don't want presidents to have to leave a safety deposit which they might not get back if they mess up.

I believe firmly that every president has done something at least as bad as Watergate - in order to get their policies accepted, to gain more power, whatever. Every president has done something we would hate him for. That's what I believe.

We don't need a president for a moral leader or an idol or a monarch. We need a president who works her/his ass off to keep our heads above water, and safe.
We need a president who doesn't delegate everything.
We need a president who can make sound decisions re what risks to take. I don't care if I would like them personally.

It's a hard job and they have to take risks, and if they get caught, it's sad and tragic. If they try to screw the constitution and get caught, they need to know it hasn't gone un-noticed, and that the people have a limit to their patience.

All that can be done without disrupting the forward motion we are finally going to have going. That's all.

Posted by: bethyboo Author Profile Page | January 18, 2009 3:31 AM

  99. And I agree 100 percent with Bethy -- let the investigations begin by journalists (if there are any left) and historians. Don't let this man be whitewashed like Ronald Reagan.

  102. In the end, Mortimer is overjoyed to learn that he was adopted and is not biologically related to the Brewsters after all. He is actually the son of a sea cook (in the original play, he happily exclaims, "Elaine! Did you hear? Do you understand? I'm a bastard!").

I truly hope that doesn't happen this time around, like naming roads, airports etc, after Bush.Ha,now if Bush had a sexual misdeed and lied about it I'm sure he wouldn't be whitewashed!! I agree though its up to the press and I don't have much confidence in them anymore....
