So maybe it wasn't the Gettysburg Address, but Barack Obama's Inaugural Address was interestingly similar in its brevity and simplicity. "On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord," Obama said.
What is so remarkable about the Gettysburg Address is that in just a two-minute speech Abraham Lincoln set forth one of the great visions in presidential history. Drawing upon the principles of human equality in the Declaration of Independence, he redefined the ongoing Civil War as much more than a struggle to preserve the Union but as a "new birth of freedom" with true equality of all citizens as its goal. He also ensured in this speech that winning the war would elevate the status of national government over states' rights.
That is a heap of vision for ten sentences and 272 words. And yet, there was no bevy of professional writers swirling around Lincoln as he wrote what became one of the most quoted speeches in history.
A popular myth is that Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address on the back of an envelope while riding the train to the speech site. That has never been confirmed and seems most unlikely. Lincoln crafted his speeches with great care. He often wrote several drafts. Many of his handwritten drafts for the Gettysburg Address later surfaced, and none of them were on the back of an envelope. Like most of his speeches, this one was written on Executive Mansion stationery.
Lincoln actually wrote the first drafts in Washington. And eyewitnesses said he completed the final draft in the Gettysburg lawyer's home where he spent the night before giving the speech.
Also, the political significance of what Lincoln was attempting to do in this address suggests that he would not have been so cavalier as to dash it off on any available piece of paper while riding the train. In his view, the preservation of the union was not only at stake. The preservation of his own presidency was in doubt.
By late 1863. when he traveled to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to deliver the address, the casualty list from the bloody war was rising at an alarming rate. At least a quarter of a million lives had been lost. Anti-war sentiment was raging throughout the northern states and Lincoln was their target. Democrats were eager to oust Lincoln, the first Republican president, in the next election, just a year away. They proposed ending the war by making concessions to the South.
Lincoln's predicament was made worse by the necessity of a draft to keep the ravaged Union battle lines supplied with fresh troops. Anti-draft riots were breaking out. Hatred of the president was rampant.
Just two months before the Gettysburg Address the governor of Pennsylvania and a close friend, Andrew Curtin, wrote an ominous letter to Lincoln, warning the president that the public was turning against him and the war.
"I have been looking over the canvass in this State, with great care, and have formed the following conclusions: If the election were to occur now, the result would be extremely doubtful, and although most of our discreet friends are sanguine of the result, my impression is, the chances would be against us. The draft is very odious in the State, and unfortunately is not producing more than one-sixth of the men anticipated for the public service. In the cities and towns the changes are all in our favor, but in the country, remote from the centres of intelligence, the Democratic leaders have succeeded in exciting prejudice and passion, and have infused their poison into the minds of the people to a very large extent, and the changes are against us. ... It is impossible to magnify the importance of the result of the election in this State to the Country, and I desire to sink all personal considerations, and all political and personal differences and disagreements, and give the Contest all my time and energies."
Those are not words any president wants to hear just a year before facing reelection. Lincoln had to give the country a brand new vision for the war that would raise spirits and reset the resolve to press on.
It is fascinating that, for a venue to proclaim his vision to keep the war going, Lincoln chose a battlefield where 7,500 and several thousand horses had perished. If anything, Gettysburg was a reminder of his war's tremendous cost. But how wise it turned out to be.
In the speech, Lincoln appealed for going forward to victory or else the dead would have lost their lives "in vain." The horrifying drama of the scene at Gettysburg intensified the impact of his words.
Critics to this day have pointed out that the Gettysburg Address was long on poetry and short on logic. Would democracy throughout the world have perished if the Confederacy had survived? It seems a stretch for Lincoln to have asserted that the Union must fight the war to a successful conclusion so that "government of the people by the people, for the people, should not perish from the earth."
Journalist H. L. Mencken wrote in 1922 that "it is difficult to imagine anything more untrue" than Lincoln's claim that the war was being fought to preserve democracy. "The Union solders in the battle actually fought against self-determination; it was the Confederates who fought for the right of their people to govern themselves," Mencken wrote.
Such naysaying aside, there is no question that Lincoln's gambit worked. His larger vision for the war's purpose eventually rallied the nation to the great cause he had set forth -- the defense of freedom.
Sound familiar? Presidents who run wars usually echo Lincoln's words, whether it be Ronald Reagan's support of the Nicaraguan "freedom fighters" or George W. Bush's crusade for democracy in the Middle East.
There is no better compliment for a president's vision than to have it last through the ages as a useful tool for successors, whether or not it is appropriate.

Craig - A for today - the more things change the more they stay the same ---
And was it really the address that made the difference... naa
Did you put this in to feed the ping?

So, let me get this straight. Lincoln helped make it possible for Obama to become prez, but W is Licolnesque.
I don't agree with Craig's use of Mencken's point that "it is difficult to imagine anything more untrue" than Lincoln's claim that the war was being fought to preserve democracy. " It was a short-sighted thought from the 1920s and not worth using to substantiate today's column.
First of all, how long would the fighting have continued and how much more damage would have been done to both sides?
Secondly, in this weakend state, we would have been more vulnerable to outside attacks.
Finally, the Confederates were NOT fighting for the rights of people to govern themselves, at least not all people.
However, I did learn one thing about Lincoln today. That the envelope story isn't true. Craig, Easter is coming up; please don't write a coulmn about the bunny. I don't wanna know.

Blue.... I gotta to not get started..
as brief as possible - Having touched and talked with people that touched and talked with those that lived during civil war- and hearing their storys was very powerful.
the lesson I learned was slavery is wrong - but this was present both north and south - and as the north "won" (no one wins) - they get to write the story.
That yes the rules where different - but I always heard of people taking care of people...
I recall one Sunday Dinner (this is lunch time after Church) and my best friend had his girl friend home from college... His Grandmother was there and asked her name... She said it was S Sherman. Grandma put her fork down and did not eat the entire meal.
As I tell my daughters - yes some bad things happened not only in the south but in all of America - we are far from perfection. But also know that your southern heritage is something to be proud of, and to celebrate the so many more good things and keep it going as you both are G.R.I.T.S.

I'll bet that's right. Here in Tennessee, I seldom mention the fact that one great grandfather fought on the Union side in the Battle of Nashville, and another marched with Sherman to the sea.

mornin'
According to some of the talkers on Sirius Left yesterday _ I forget which one - Alex Benntt maybe? - the Gettysburg address was anything but a hit at the time. It was panned as too short considering the gravity of the events it was meant to memorialize and essentially was considered a slight by at least some of those who heard it (none of whom, I presume, were on the program yesterday). Speeches are nice, but in the end, without effective follow up that puts the speech in a favorable historical light, they become not much more than "pretty words . . . but what did they mean?" Had the Union army not "won" the war, Lincoln's address would likely have been forgotten, Obama would never have become president, and any African American who might have ultimately become president of whatever what would have been left of the United Staes would certainly not have chosen Lincoln's bible to use at his or her inauguration. Still, excellent piece, Craig.

Awesome first paragraph from a Jack Shafer profile on Chris Matthews:
Nobody in TV news stir-fries his ideas and serves them to the audience faster than MSNBC's Chris Matthews. Drawing from a larder filled with old anecdotes, unreliable metaphors, wacky intuition, and superficial observations, the always-animated Matthews steers whatever's handy into the hot wok that is his brain. The sizzling free-associations skitter through his limbic system, leap out his mouth, and look for a resting spot in the national conversation, where they steam like fresh lava in untouchable heaps.

However, the New York Post seemed less impressed, saying “very strange outfit. Far too glitzy and blingie”.
The LA Times, too, held similar doubts.
“Rather disappointing choice for a woman who generally has excellent fashion sense. Going to have to kick it up a notch from this dowdy outfit if she wants to be the next Jackie/Diana,” News.com.au quoted the LA times as saying.
The dress is rather dull for the moment. It fails to accentuate her figure. This would be a dress for church, and not this memorable day, another writer added.
The mum-of-two, hailed by fashion experts, had later changed into white chiffon, one-shoulder gown, designed by Jason Wu, for the inauguration balls, which prompted the new President to say: “First of all, how good looking is my wife?” (ANI)

LOL at that Newsweek LaMarkism article. Darwin never said that offpring can't inherit acquired traits of their parents - they manifestly do - his thesis is that the traits that drive evolution are the enduring traits necessary to survival that are passed on genetically, the absence of which eventually leads to extinction - or atl east that's how I remember understanding it from way back when I studied it. The flea and giraffe examples show how poor the reporting is - The flea's helmet, at least as it is described, is a genetic marker that does not eventually manifest in the flea's DNA, and does not become a trait - because it is not necessary for the survival of the flea speciies. The giraffe's neck has become part if its DNA - seen any short necked giraffes from zoo dwelling giraffes' offspring? That would be the expected result if the thesis of the article was correct and LaMarkism explained the longer necks. More likely, the giraffes with longer necks survived and passed the long-neck gene along because they could eat enough to survive and the the short necked giraffes became extinct even though they too stretched for leaves - they did not ultimately get enough nourishment to survive. Darwin's model may be neither perfect nor all encompassing, but it does a very good job of explaining the emergence of new species from old and the extinction of old species that do not adapt to changing conditions. I think African elephants would have a tough time living there if they were covered with the hair of their forebears.
And anywho - evolution is a theory that does a pretty good job of explaining an observed phenomenon - the fact that there are other processes observable in the world no more disprove Darwin's theory than Darwin's theory explains away other observations that appear not to fit it but fit into a different theory of change among and within species.

My two cents worth. I thought she and the kids looked very nice at the inauguration.
My thoughts about the evening gown are somewhat different. First, I don't like the single broad strap across one shoulder that seems to be the trend now. Second, even with hi-def I wasn't able to get a decent appreciation for the fabric so nothing to say about its appearance. Third, it seemed as if she was having trouble maneuvering in the gown. Was the fabric too heavy/stiff? I guess it takes years of practice to handle a gown the way Vanna does.

First , I don't consider a tux formal attire--semi-formal at best. Second, his shirts don't fit properly. Third, if his wife is going dressed to the nines, then he should wear white tie to make her proud.

he oath of office flub on Inauguration Day led to an awkward moment Wednesday between President Barack Obama and VP Joe Biden.

Vice President Joe Biden makes a funny ... but President Barack Obama isn't amused.
Obama Doesn't Find Biden's Joke Funny
close
Obama asked Biden to swear in senior members of the White House staff during a press conference Wednesday.
Biden may have had a senior moment instead, forgetting momentarily what he was supposed to do.
Obama: Joe, you want to administer the oath?
Biden: Am I doing this again? Oh! For the senior staff. My memory's not as good as Justice Roberts' ... Chief Justice Roberts.
Obama, not looking amused, gave Biden a tap on his back with his right hand in an attempt to get his VP back on track.
The oath then took place without any more incidents, but Biden did get some laughs from staffers and the press corps.

At times, Obama seemed not to know what was in the particular order he was about to sign. Several times, Obama asked for help from off-camera to know what it was that he was signing! ... It certainly looks better when the President can clearly describe the orders he is signing, especially when they could have such drastic consequences to the safety of Americans."

Jack, Have to agree with the writer about Hillary's gown. She is little to begin with and that neck and waist design made her looked scrunched together. Now that blue gown worn earlier was absolutely perfect for her figure and coloring. She needs vivid colors or she just looks blah.

ALBANY - An aide to Caroline Kennedy said Thursday her withdrawal from consideration for the open U.S. Senate seat was because of an undisclosed "personal situation," not the deteriorating health of her uncle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).
The aide declined to provide details about the nature of the impediment or its likely duration. However, the aide said Kennedy "in the early afternoon, 1 o'clock some time around that time . . . became aware of a personal situation that she determined was going to inhibit her ability to perform a job that obviously takes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week advocating on behalf of New York."

"We want to send a clear and unequivocal message," she said. "This is a team and you are the members of that team. There is not anything that I can get done from the seventh floor, or the President can get done from the Oval Office, unless we make clear we are all on the American team. We are not, any longer, going to tolerate the kind of divisiveness that has paralyzed and undermined our ability to get things done for America."

"Here's an inaugural fact: Porta-potties went largely unused"
Here is something I haven't read anywhere yet. I noticed late Monday night that a great many of the porta potties (we call them Kybos) were locked with zip ties so they couldn't be used. I don't know if anyone ever went along and removed the zip ties but I am guessing they did not. There seemed to be a lack of follow through on most of the plans. Also there was a large group of Kybos during the concert on Sunday that no one could use because there was a security perimeter that could not be crossed.
The kybos that were unlocked were full and nasty as early as Monday. Thank goodness I had the credentials to get into some of the official office buildings. The one by my congressman's office even had a couch. :)

Does it have a possum on it?
Sen. Barack Obama's campaign has stirred a lot of buzz with its latest innovation, a new seal that combines elements of the actual presidential seal and Obama's logo.
Some people are poking fun at the Obama folks for this. But if you want voters to imagine your candidate as president, what better way to do that than to have him appear behind a faux presidential seal? It actually makes sense on a certain level.
And this is probably a good time to experiment with it. That way, if there's a voter backlash, the sense that Obama has gone too far, the campaign has plenty of time to throw the seal down the memory hole in the hope that it will have been forgotten by Election Day.
They may want to rethink the Latin inscription "vero possumus," however. It made me think of opossum. I don't think the campaign wants people thinking of opossum when they look at Obama.
Vero possumus essentially means "Truly we're able" which is basically "Yes, we can," the Obama campaign's slogan

In a stunning revelation, a source close to Gov. David Paterson insisted this afternoon that the governor "had no intention" of picking Caroline Kennedy for New York's vacant senate seat - because she was "mired" in an issue over taxes, her nanny and possibly her marriage.
Kennedy was "mired in some potentially embarrassing personal issues," the source said, citing tax liabilities and worker compensation liabilities connected to the employment of a nanny.
The source also said the state of her marriage may have presented a problem as well.
"She has a tax problem that came up in the vetting and a potential nanny issue," the soruce said. "And reporters are starting to look at her marriage more closely," the soruce continued, refusing to provide any specifics.
Gossip columns have reported for more than a year that Kennedy's marriage to Ed Schlossberg is essentially over, and the gossip site Gawker.com has reported rumors that she's been linked to New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger.

Thanks for the porta potty story. I emailed one of the companies in the article and have already received a reply back. Alpine was a sub-contractor and was required to ziptie the porta potties during transport and to leave them ziptied once placed. The main contractor was reponsible for removing the zipties. Alpine is following up with the contractor to see who dropped the ball so they can all learn from this situation.

Funny day here.
This woman believes that Michelle should drop her stylist from Chicago and hire someone with more experience or ability to foresee the dress in long camera shots etc. They start with classic styles then add silly embellishments (red dress the flopping bow, lumpy fabric in gown,.strap too wide etc.) She is pear shaped and I don't believe they have been using the most flattering cuts- needs more v necks. She obviously wasn't comfortable in the gown as she was lifting and tugging regularly. Colors aren't the best choice either. The golden dress should have been an absolutely perfect color as it was probably the most photographed day of her life. I think she might be pretty in coral chiffon, maybe a halter type dress a la Marilyn Monroe. She has great shoulders , should stand up straighter, and to hell with her husband, flaunt her height and put on some heels! I've heard she will only use american designers which is good. Dump the stylist from Chicago, certainly there is someone more talented in NY or LA.
Hillary's Gown- I saw one head shot wchich only included the pink upperhalf, which looked nice, despite the too heavy brocade around the shoulders. On the other hand the grey bottom killed it. The dress was very reminiscent of Queen Elizabeth's style of gown. I know she is a woman of a certain age, but don't think she needs to go that far.

President Obama won the first fight of his presidency: He can keep his BlackBerry.
A ruling has been reached among the president’s advisers – and the Secret Service – that will allow him to keep his e-mailing device. The decision is set to be explained this afternoon at the first White House briefing of the new administration.

"It's 65 in K. C"
Yep 30 degrees above average, but then again last week it was 30 degrees below average. Next week who knows.
Winter in Kansas city gotta love it.
Cbob in the last 40 years I've seen Missouri januarys where wild flowers and ones where the temeratures never got above freezing. As I said we are having an ordinary January.
Pointing out the warm day today as a sign of global warming is as useless as pointing to the below 0 cold last week as a point refuting it.

Agnotology: Culturally constructed ignorance, purposefully created by special interest groups working hard to create confusion and suppress the truth.
I think this is becoming my favorite word.
I've noticed a lot of it on both sides of the global warming debate too.

Jack,
I'm with you on that one.....
I agree that pumping pollutants into the air and water is damaging and we should continue all efforts to minimize and eventually eliminate it.
But I'm wondering if this rush to green has more to do with the temps not cooperating than any impending doom......you know ....pass it quick before our data is disproven......old mother nature just won't do as she's told.....:)

OSH,
I understand the local opposition and since I don't have a horse in the race I;'ll leave it to the locals.....
But I will offer some professional opinion....The shipping lanes argument won't pass scrutiny. I'm very familiar with the navigation lanes there and the area discussed is a shoal (shallow) area already......
Ships will run aground there regardless of what's put there. Some big lit up windmills are just going to serve as additional warning to stay out of there.....
I'm sure there's other arguments.....that's just not one I'd put alot of effort into.

OSH,
The authorized vessel traffic scheme does not run through there.
Some shallow draft vessels may run through there if they can get over the shoals. If they do they are operating outside the authorized traffic scheme.
No deep draft vessels can make it over the shoals. Shoals to ship people is anything significantly shallower than the channel.

20 million on the Mitchell report
Rosen: Sorry, but the net effect of this is a whitewash. A lot of HGH-using All Stars breathing easier today.
Jack Shafer: Mitchell's comparison of his MLB steroid investigation to his brokering of the N. Ireland peace talks is worth a horse laugh: We should forgive and forget the steroid users for the same reason the Irish are supposed to forgive and forget, to paraphrase him. Equating widespread cheating with a nasty civil war seems bizarre. Does he really think an excess of finger-pointing in baseball circles will restart steroid use the way finger-pointing in N. Ireland will restart the war?

Pet Peeve. This one just happened on 1600 with Schuster.
Republican Bob Ehrlich just uttered the knee jerk line, "The top 1% pay 40% of the taxes". That is true. What no one like Schuster ever says is, "Yes, but they control more than 90% of the wealth, so they are getting the middle class of pick up 60% of the taxes for less than 10% of the wealth.
Somebody needs to put a great big pin into that lying Republican balloon. The reason we have these massive boom bust cycles is because that super wealthy group isn't paying about 60% of the taxes the way they did under Kennedy.

"The complaint seeks to learn the truth about whether Obama is an Article II “natural born Citizen” and eligible to be President and Commander in Chief.
As you know, the courts have refused to reach the underlying merits of the many lawsuits that have been filed on the question of whether Mr. Obama is an Article II “natural born Citizen” and eligible to be President and Commander in Chief. My clients and I hope that we will get a court to reach the underlying merits of this question so that the American people will be assured that Mr. Obama is their legitimate President and not an usurper."

Jax- There are ferries running daily to Nantucket from Hyannis, draggers and barges. I don't know the legality of it but the cruise ship industry hops from Nantucket to the Vineyard and then up to Boston. They aren't the little ones either. The World pulls in most every year. There's some cans out there they maneuver around but they all do. This mammoth project is smack dab in the middle of everything. The recreational boaters go back and forth round the clock. Use to have a charter business, me and everybody from the cape were out on squash meadow all the time. It just isn't the right place. The proposed project 10 miles off the south shore of the Vineyard is infinitely preferable. This Corp. has already spent millions on legal fees etc., trying to shove it down our throats in our public waters and have to gaul to tell us that it will save us money. We already have some of the highest costs for electric in the country, so we would be all about cutting those costs, if it were the case. People around here are really very environmentally conscious, green, grow local , the gamut. Despite their leanings, this project has little support from the public.

Carter gave the Clintons plenty of trouble about Whitewater (A scandal "invented" by the NYT's Jeff Gerth -- sometimes working out of Clinton-hater Sheffield Nelson's law office.). Carter's statements helped force the naming of an Independent Council.
Along with Senator Moynihan. I remember seeing him on MTP -- he couldn't keep his mouth shut about Whitewater. I followed the Whitewater story in great detail. The Clinton-haters wanted an IC so they could go on a "fishing expedition".
One investigation led to another -- I followed all the "scandals". Can remember Bill Clinton's lawyer (Bob Bennett) expressing outrage that Starr had gotten involved in the Paula Jones case. The anti-Clinton lawyers were working together to tarnish the Clintons -- knowing it would damage Gore.

's not like we hadn't given Caroline Kennedy plenty of warnings with our raving coverage:
* We were writing about her special friendship with NYT publisher Pinch Sulzberger before she ever dreamed of being in the Senate!
* The NYT, coincidentally, got the scoop on her Senate bid.
* We warned her this whole Senate thing was a bad idea.
* We pointed out that all she had to say was 'You know.'
* And did so again.
* Finally we were forced to un-endorse her.
The only thing we can't figure out is that politicians normally take their name out of contention to prevent skeletons from tumbling out of the closet (see: Bill Richardson), not to cause an avalanche of rumors and speculation

Just after BC's mother died, he went to Europe. At a press conference, BC was asked about something Cater had said involving Whitewater (don't remember what). The Clintons were not able to resist the Repub demand for an IC when Dems like Carter and Moynihan were themselves raising questions about the Whitewater land deal and their relationship with the McDougals.

Albany Times Union is up with signs point to Gillibrand.
The selection of Gillibrand would help Paterson's unstated goal of preparing for his 2010 run by putting an upstate woman on the same ballot with him.
She is also a proven fundraiser who would head into 2 back to back election cycles in a 2010 special election & the regular Senate contest in 2012 with a well-stocked war chest.
The guest list for Friday's noon announcement includes a number of people close to the second term congresswoman.

I have a problem, and I could use some Help: I own my own business, which was opened on Jan 20th. I have Two young girls, that work for me, who were to work that day. They took the day off, without so much as a phone call, leaving me shorthanded. Now, I don't know if I should Fire them, suspended them without pay, or just overlook the whole thing? Posted by: Lampe | January 22, 2009 10:57 PM
Lampe, you absolutely must have a written personnel policy (manual) that let's your employees no exactly what the rules are and the consequences. All your punitive actions follow from those rules.
Hiring is time consuming and expensive. You can't afford to ignore what happened. If you think they had a temporary lapse, then consider documented counseling pointed out the infraction, what the effect was on the organization, and what will happen the next time around.
Posted by: Flatus
| January 22, 2009 11:02 PM
Depends on if you think these girls have something positive to offer your business. In my plant, that is known as a no call/no show and employees are usually terminated for that unless there are special circumstances.
Temps are told that their assignment has ended and are no longer needed.
Posted by: Bowmanc
| January 22, 2009 11:02 PM
Lampe,
I would take each one of the girls separately and have a nice "come to Jesus" meeting. Explain how they should have called in and if it happens again, they get fired.

They are what they are. How important is it to you and how easy are they to replace.
If you hire on the lower end of the scale that is the quality of worker you get. live with it. If your are paying above average and therfor paying for people to show up then make a scene.

If this is the first time and they have been good then you might cut them some slack. It is a moral responsibility, if they don't show up then they place a burden on others. It is a point that needs to be made for their benifit.
