In Hollywood director Oliver Stone's mostly factual film, "Nixon," British actor Anthony Hopkins portrays the delusional president wandering around the White House after hours talking to the portraits of other presidents. In one imaginary scene, he addresses his political nemesis, John F. Kennedy, with lines that not only sum up Nixon's self-destructive jealousy, but also describe a difficult balancing act for presidents who survive with a positive legacy.
"They look at you and see who they want to be," Stone's "Nixon" said to JFK's portrait. "They look at me and see who they are."
While the scene was fictional, the sentiment was real.
Great presidents tend to be those who inspire by being who Americans aspire to be, while also seeming to be one of the people. It's a tough challenge to remain above us and among us all at once.
Usually it falls to the press corps to bring them down to Earth. It's an unpopular job with a president as popular as Barack Obama will be at first, but that is often when it is most needed and, sadly, when it is least provided.

White Phosphorous and Dense Inert Metal Explosives: Is Israel Using Banned and Experimental Munitions in Gaza?
Whitephosphorusweb
Israel is coming under increasing criticism for its possible use of banned and experimental munitions. Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of illegally firing white phosphorous, which causes horrific burns if it comes in contact with the skin, over crowded refugee camps in Gaza. Medics and human rights groups are also reporting that they are seeing injuries distinctive of another controversial weapon, Dense Inert Metal Explosive, known as DIME, that was designed by the US Air Force in 2006. Those struck by the weapon who survive suffer severe mutilations and internal injuries. We go to the Gaza border to speak with Marc Garlasco of Human Rights Watch and to Norway to speak with Dr. Mads Gilbert, who just returned from the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. He says Gaza is “truly a scene from Dante’s Inferno.” [includes rush transcri
AMY GOODMAN: As you look at what’s happening in Gaza from your vantage point, well, many miles away in Britain, can you talk about the kind of trajectory your evaluation has taken, where you started in your thoughts about Israel and where you are now?
AVI SHLAIM: As you mentioned, I did national service in the Israeli army in the mid-1960s. And in those days, Israel was a small state surrounded by enemies, and the nation was united in face of the surrounding Arab states. We all felt total commitment to the state of Israel and to the defense of the state of Israel. The Israeli army is called the Israel Defense Forces, and it was true to its name.
But 1967, the war of June 1967, was a major turning point in the history of Israel and the history of the region. In the course of the war, Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria, the West Bank from Jordan and Sinai from Egypt. After the war, Israel started building civilian territories in the occupied territories in violation of international law. So Israel became a colonial power and an imperial power.
And I, for my part, have never questioned the legitimacy of the Zionist movement. I saw it as the national liberation movement of the Jewish people. Nor did I ever question the legitimacy of the state of Israel within its pre-1967 borders. What I reject, what I reject totally, absolutely and uncompromisingly, is the Zionist colonial project beyond the 1967 borders. So we have to distinguish very clearly between Israel proper, within its pre-1967 borders, and Greater Israel, which began to emerge in the aftermath of the June ‘67 war and has completely derailed the Zionist project.

You might mention that the 1967 war was because all of the countries surrounding Israel attacked them, not the other way around. Since 1967 Israel has given back more than 90% of all the land won in that war except for those areas deemed necessary to act as protective barriers and has been negotiating ever since for the return of those areas despite constant attacks from its neighbors.

We are one of the few nations on earth that celebrates a peaceful transfer of power. One person leads the way on to the stage to the tune of Hail To The Chief played for them for the last time and another person is sworn in and for the first time hears Hail To The Chief performed for them and following their speech, they lead the way off the stage.
A simple but beautiful way to show something we take for granted and so few other people know.

According to The Pittsburgh Post Gazette Today: A luncheon was hosted by EMILY'S LIST, to celebrate Democratic Women in Politics. The mostly female audience of 2,000 stomped and cheered loudly for HRC, Pelosi,Solis and Napolitano. EMILY'S LIST, founded in 1985, is one of the largest political action committees in the country. Now, my question is this, if this is a group, who is supposed to help advance women into politics, why then did EMILY'S LIST, support Obama?

It's a new york thing
your being a neighbor comment just went over the head.
There are places in NYC where they understand helping the neighbor out.
I enjoyed a conversation with my nephew. He is a small town Missouri boy who moved to NYC to break into the Chef trade. He had just moved out of a neigborhood populated with white professionals and move into a building that was in an ethnic area dominated by Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. He is loving it he now feels like he has real neighbors even though he can't speak the common language. It is the atmosphere.

"Now, my question is this, if this is a group, who is supposed to help advance women into politics, why then did EMILY'S LIST, support Obama?"
Lampe -- Emily's List supported Hillary until after the primary. Then they supported the pro-choice candidate. I did hear a lot of anger from various EL people about the sexist terminology used in describing Sarah Palin. But like myself, they could be angry about sexist attitudes whether they supported her politics or not.

Lampe,
After reading your post re: Emily's list, while I have no answer to the question you raised---I found this Salon article about Hillary at the event.
"Hillary is back
At the Emily's List gala, Hillary Clinton is her old feminist self once again---only better" by Rebecca Traister
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/01/19/emily_list/
This statement (for me) stood out:
"After all of the sniping & anger & hurt that was unleashed during Clinton's campaign against Barack Obama, it felt somehow right to see a ballroom full of people stand up to honor her.
And Clinton knew it. Unlike candidates who crumble after bitter losses, Clinton's sense of herself and her politics and her priorities seems only to have grown stronger since her June concession. She nimbly shifted gears & became an Obama warrior, even when many of her supporters threatened not to follow her down the path.
Now, as evidenced by her great testimony during her confirmation hearings last week, she is entering yet another phase of her political life--rediscovering an older iteration of herself, one we haven't seen in full bloom since the late '90s: the Hillary Rodham Clinton dedicated to fighting for women around the world.

Back to important things--Scrabble and the weatherf!
Jamie and Sturg, I haven't had a real game of Scrabble in almost 40-years, while my Mom and Uncle Mike were still alive. It was before all the scrabble dictionaries and such came into being. Our rule on allowable words was that we had to be able to define it _and_ that it could be found in the twenty-pound Webster's International that was on a wheeled cart in the living room. Tremendous vocabulary builder.
Uncle Mike lived in the Commodore Hotel in Cleveland. He wouldn't leave his rooms in the morning until after he did the Times crossword puzzle. I don't think he did them in ink, but I don't believe he ever had an eraser wear out before the rest of a pencil. It's guys like him who gave Will Shortz his chance in life.
I have played Scrabble with the grandkids, but as soon as they start being good, their, how should I say it, interests change. Oh well, perhaps I've planted seeds that will be dormant until some spark brings them to life.
Jamie, have you looked at the online version, Lexulous?
And the weather. Renee, don't let Bush the Elder hear about that octogenarian ski club; he would probably be there, artificial hip and all.
Ping, we always have packets of dehydrated milk in the cupboard. But, what you said made me think of Mickey, our milkman in Cleveland. Thanksgiving week 1950 we had a 27-inch snow. The next morning he drove his milk truck, full of milk, along the plowed road closest to our neighborhood. All his regulars trudged down and picked-up their normal allotment.
A few years ago we had a heavy (for here) snow. I went up the street to shovel the driveway of the fellow up the street who lost his legs to a VC landmine. Another neighbor saw what I was doing and came out to help, and then another...
That same storm, I went out first thing in the morning and saw that our driveway had been shoveled. I figured it was probably the Army captain who lived next door to us; it wasn't. My son-in-law drove over before he went to work and did it for us. All these deeds were done without arm-waving or expectations of acknowledgment. Which is what makes mitzvahs meaningful.
So, I hope for a snow that will brighten all our days. And...

Renee, I don't know what you have against me but I don't think I had a temper tantrum. There is a belief that I subscribe to and that is, if you are in the way, it's time to get out of the way. I came back to see if anything has changed and it hasn't. It seems to work for some and not for others. I am one of the others that it doesn't work. It has nothing to do with having a temper tantrum, so I guess I don't follow the point. Anyway... I've never belittled you or your comments and I won't now.
Perhaps agreeing with the whining comment was too strong, but there was a post in the last blog that seemed to fit that description. I should no better than to interject myself in the middle of such debates. Someday I will learn.

I may be missing something, but as Patsi explained Emily's List supported Hillary from the beginning of her candidacy & throughout the primary & then only after Hillary conceded & urged her supporters to join her in supporting Obama did they move their support to him.
If you believe they should not have supported any Presidential candidate once no woman was a candidate, ok, but I do not see their support of Obama
after Hillary was no longer running as a betrayal of their goals.

There's nothing wrong with being at the kids table, Jack. Well, except for the lack of proper leg room. I think the hoopla about Mrs. Biden's comment is that it was said on Oprah. Joe played it off as a joke. People thought it was funny.

I've been a big fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers since the year of the Immaculate Reception by Franco Harris, and could never root against them in the Super Bowl.
They came along in the early 70s just as my even-more-beloved KC Chiefs started a long decline. And the Steelers then and ever since have been the same style of team as the old Chiefs -- absolutely smothering defense. Old school football.

After I got off the tread mill for the stress test, I realised just how out of shape I was. While framing I never worried but now all I do is little piddly stuff I haven't picked up 10 studs and carried them up 2 flights of stairs for over 2 years.
So I guess I need to listen to the wife and find a place to work out.

Jack...your last comment about hauling studs up flights of stairs made me laugh at a funny memory. A couple decades ago, a bunch of me and my college-boy friends devised an elaborate pulley system to haul bundles of shingles up onto the top of a house we were reroofing in Independence. This burly guy across the street wandered out onto his front lawn to investigate, and when he realized what we were doing, he just shook his head in disgust.
"Why don't you just toss a couple at a time over your shoulder and carry them up the ladder, like real men do," he said. "Damn pencil pushers."
I'm now thinking that guy might have been you.

"There's a reason this goes on and on and on. It's called religious-tinged stupidity on both sides."
I disagree 100% (not that you care). Once again, It's not about religion at all, it's about the same stuff it has always been: land, money, resources, and power. The "religion" argument makes it easy to dismiss certain perspectives, as it's easy to claim that all matters are unsolvable due to insurmountable religious differences, which is erroneous imo, and the same rationale is used to excuse bad behavior as being due to "religious convictions".
(There you go, Chloe... that's what I meant)

" It's not about religion at all, it's about the same stuff it has always been: land, money, resources, and power. "
Agree to part of what you said, but I still say that underneath it all is religion. They'd have figured this out years ago if not for the Axis of Evil in the Mid East: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
And I bow out of the discussion, because I think it'll be going on a thousand years from now.

Jack- There is a home procedure out there for removing building up gallstones, drinking huge amounts of grapefruit juice for a week, then drink something like 1/2 cup olive oil on the last day etc. and you wouldn't believe the stones that appear. My friends have all done it here, am truly amazed. Personally just haven't had the time to commit to it. They all lose weight and have increased energy for quite a time. I would like to tell you all a few stories about my grandfather: He was a man, who loved to sample the product that he was selling. On evening he came home drunk as a skunk. As he was climbing the stairs to the second floor, he left out this yell.", I can't move, I can't move, my legs and my feet are numb." Needless to say my mother, and my aunts and uncles went running. Once there they found out that he was standing on his pant leg. He also loved to bake bread. I was probably no more then 2 years old at the time. He had his loaves of dough in pans on the floor in front of the fireplace waiting for them to rise. My uncles were chasing me around the house. I slipped and fell into the bread pans, my grandfather knew what happened, but his remarks were " I knew that damn Yeast was no Good."

New action filed based on Bush's Executive Order
"31. No evidence of any legal name change from ‘Barry Soetoro’ to ‘Barack Obama’ can be located through ordinary public records searches, and so adequate records must be produced and examined to determine whether or not Obama has violated the 18 USC 1001 by providing a false name or an alias in his bid for President of the United States.
35e. The law in Hawaii in 1961, and for all births prior to 1972, (see Chapter 338-178, Hawaii Statutes) provided that a birth could be recorded in Hawaii even if the birth did not occur in Hawaii; and
35f. Therefore, a long form (“vault”) birth certificate, showing the hospital where the birth took place, the name of a delivering physician, the witnesses attesting to the certificate, and other pertinent verifying information, and not an abstract certificate is required to demonstrate the birth of Obama in Hawaii."

Lampe - What a great story re your grandfather! I'd love to hear more - what was his name?
I'm beginning to be sorry to see those who went thru the Depression and really remember it dying out. Lampe's and Sea's grandfathers were remarkable men who didn't run or make excuses - like the pilot of the plane that landed on the Hudson, they knew what they had to do and they got it done. It is so wonderful to see someone take the responsibility and do it right.
So keep on with the stories, you guys. I have no stories re my grandfathers and my dad is gone too, with few stories, altho he did say once that he was glad he went thru the Depression so we wouldn't have to. (sigh - his ashes are fluttering in the urn now)
Another example of that was Flatus's story re how he ended back in the military when he found out he needed insurance for one of the kids. Flatus, that was so reassuring to hear about a parent who immediately made the right, but un-wanted, decision for a dependent. It's still happening today, but all we seem to hear is grotesque examples of selfish and immature behaviour on the part of stars, movies and politics.
So, thanks to Lampe, Sea, and Flatus - let's hear more.
I don't think there's been much whining at all later - except the groans I imagine I hear when you see it's another long post from me.
AND, Lampe, since I have bad memories of the Cardinals when they were in St Louis, I had already decided to root for the Steelers. (I did note tho, that the old coot Bill Bidwell has given way to his son. No wonder they're a good team now.) Go Steelers!

By the way, Craig, I think that story re Nixon and his conversations with old presidents is what made up my mind re Woodward and Berstein. They also used quotation marks around totally fictitious comments. I have never liked them or respected them - I don't care what they did about Watergate and think they were just after a story and were not moral about it at all. At least that's how I feel about them.
I seem to remember Ted Kennedy has something to say about their ethics in that book.
Okay, I'll shut up. Gonna go eat some stew.!

My Grandparents names were George and Evelyn; They were married for 58 years, they had 3 daughters and 3 sons. And, my grandfather was the only one bringing in any money until my uncles got old enough to work. My Grandfather said , " We managed because we had to, you lived within your means." I remember stories about how my mother had to wear shoes with holes in the soles, because there wasn't money for new ones. She said, " Grandma, would put cardboard in the bottom, so they could be worn longer. They said , that times were very hard, but you did what you had to. If you didn't have money for things back then, you just did without. I remember being told about mustard , or mashed potato sandwiches. Now, I sit and wonder how they ever managed. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I have my own business. I don't have to depend on anyone to feed me or mines.

Late this afternoon Stinky and I watched yesterday's concert at the Lincoln Memorial that we had time shifted.
Lots of the performers we had never heard of--no surprise there because we virtually never hear popular music. But, we were impressed at how well rehearsed everyone was and how seamless the production was.
I thought Tiger Woods remarks were especially moving. I've known so many families just like his. He has never forgotten his roots and what living in a military community did to shape him.

There are crimes in that executive order Obama has committed. The drug use, going behind Bush’s back in Iraq, campaigning for his cousin in Kenya while in the senate. Both felonies.

The ghost of Emmit Till is about.
Posted by: Colorado Bob | January 20, 2009 1:06 AM
Remember this dear readers, Emmit Till was foremost in Rosa's mind on that bus. She had seen his body in that open casket, in the black press.
It was the last straw, for her, and everyone else that lived in that world I could never know.
Emmit's mother chose to have an open casket, white America never saw it. But in that strange parallel universe we had built, everybody in black America had seen him. Beaten to death for looking at a white woman. I have since wondered just how many were beaten to death for the same excuse, to never change the world. But Emmit's death did change the world. It changed me, when Bob Dylan sang of him much later, and my young honky ass first heard the story.
Let the day begin, let the ghosts rest. Let us lay some our baggage down, even if it's just some small bundle.
