Rove Likes Obama So Far

| | Comments (251)

If Karl Rove is warming to Barack Obama's emerging administration, don't liberals have something to worry about?

Obama's national security team inspired George W. Bush's political guru to conclude that "continuity exists, particularly in our foreign and international relations." Rove pointed to the retention of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the naming of James Jones as national security adviser, who served as military chief of NATO during the Bush administration.

Rove also offered kind words for Obama's "reassuring" economic team. "He's generally surrounded himself with intelligent, mainstream advisers."

We are still waiting -- and there's still time -- for Obama to demonstrate whether or not he duped the left during the campaign into thinking that he was on their side. No signs yet of much change in foreign policy. And the economic crisis could give Obama cover to go slow on big-ticket items like national health insurance.

African-Americans got a warning sign that Obama is not planning a specific focus on their issues. In an upcoming issue of Ebony magazine, Obama says, "When we spend all our time just focusing on things that are unique to us, it becomes harder for us to build the broad coalitions to deal with the problems that we have in common with everybody."

Still, the left seems content so far to give Obama this running room.

Who knows, maybe Rove and other conservatives saying nice things about the President-Elect are just trying to provoke a fight among liberals.

  5. Hilarious!!!

    From the Tennessean:

Toby Keith took particular notice of President-elect Barack Obama's appointment of retired Marine Gen. James Jones to national security adviser. After Toby wrote "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" in response to Sept. 11, he began playing it for the military. Toby hadn't planned on releasing it as a single because he didn't want it to be interpreted as exploiting a national tragedy. James heard Toby sing it and encouraged him to release it as a single because it would be an important song for the military and the nation to hear. They became good friends and completed a goodwill tour of Africa together. James also inducted Toby into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

Richardson has yet to apologize to Wen Ho Lee for how his case was mishandled, and he needs to do that. I don't know about your Library, but many have access to the Ancestry records for genealogists. You can get the program for home use but it is a few hundred dollars, so it is still something that can bring people in to a library.

I love the Internet for information, but many people don't know how to do effective searches. This is something that only comes from experience and some libraries are making that research ability a central part of their relationship with the public and even more specifically with schools.

And the real glory of libraries is still the books. Very few people can afford a home library or the purchase of "read once" books. I would be totally lost without my library card, and I've got multiple stuffed bookcases. Can't imagine what it would be like for a child without books in the home.

    Posted by: Pogo | December 3, 2008 11:10 AM

  61. Well CHLOE I would say Frank did a great version of New York New York, but I still hold Liza's as the standard. The song was written for her by Fred Ebb with music by John Kander who also wrote Liza with a Z. Interesting thing about NY NY, the movie, is the parallels between it and her mother's film "A Star is Born". Both of these were about successful husbands who find their popularity waning while their wives take the spotlight. Both of them were seen as strong and in control while the husbands weren't. In reality, both Judy and Liza struggled horribly with success, depression, failed marriages, chemical dependancy etc. Also, Judy was deeply distraught when A Star is Born had the "Born in a Trunk" sequence edited out. Liza was deeply distraught when much of her favourite scenes in New York, New York were edited out. Both movies were eventually re-released in their original form....

Since I am on a tangent, here is a 1955 version of Judy singing "Over the Rainbow". t's a metaphor of Judy's life. Just listen to the difference between the 1939 version and the later versions. In 1939 there was a yearning, but hope that the rainbow could be found. In later versions, it was clear that Judy knew there was no such place over the rainbow, but she still sang the song as to show "I'm still here, and despite my pain, I am still here!!" This version really does cut to the heart! When she's crying, my heart is crying with her.

Gates Expands US Right to Defend Against Plots

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates's statement expanded on the Bush administration's doctrine for pre-emptive war. (Photo: Chuck Kennedy / McClatchy)

Washington - Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Tuesday that the United States would hold "fully accountable" any country or group that helped terrorists to acquire or use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

The statement was the Bush administration's most expansive yet in attempting to articulate a vision of deterrence for the post-Sept. 11 world. It went beyond the cold war notion that a president could respond with overwhelming force against a country that directly attacked the United States or its allies with unconventional weapons.

Also his time off the Hill was spent lobbying for CVS, Abbott Labs, and Health South. Obama has him as the point person for health care at the White House as well as HHS secretary. There goes universal health care.

  78. Defense Secretary Gates Doesn’t Belong in Obama Cabinet
By Matthew Rothschild, October 29, 2008

A few days ago, the New York Times sketched out who would likely be in an Obama cabinet.

His Secretary of Defense was predicted to be none other than Robert Gates, who currently holds that post under Bush.

    Obama should think again.

On Tuesday, Gates expanded the infamous Bush doctrine, saying, “The United States will hold any state, terrorist group, or other nonstate actor or individual fully accountable” for supporting or enabling terrorist efforts to obtain or use weapons of mass destruction.” And the definition of “supporting or enabling” was very broad: “whether by facilitating, financing, or providing expertise or safe haven for such efforts.”

Under this doctrine, the United States should have bombed Pakistan because it gave a safe haven to A.Q. Khan, who was running a nuclear Wal-Mart there.

Under this doctrine, the United States should have bombed Saudi Arabia, because it was financing bin Laden in Afghanistan.

It is the old fashion containment /deterrence doctrine. That one involve a lot of threats of total destruction and many "we would be very unhappy if" , statements.

You know Solar, what you say there is not so far off. The government needs to reward behavior that will help our country as a whole (and of course, punish that that will harm us). Their whole reason for being is, after all, representation and leadership. If they can't guide us in the right directions, then they fail.

  105. Yes, Gates may be a decent administrator, but using Rummy as a benchmark sets a low standard, dontchathink? He has continued to adminster the Bush doctrine and in the opinion of some commentators (thanks for the links, KC) has even expanded it. He may have straightened out some things in the Pentagon, although I'd love to see something other than a BBFF opinion on that point, but while he may not be a major architect of the Bush doctrine, he's been a patsy of Bush and Peteraeus for 2 years and in the face of a supposedly wildly successful surge, he has presided over a reduction of an anticipated 7,000 combat troops out of the aproximately 130,000-150,000 in Iraq, and that reduction didn't start until last month. Yeah, he's really rolled back a bunch of the mistakes of Rummy and dialed back the Bush doctrine, you betcha he has. The FDL crowd will be happy when Gates gets the "head 'em up, move 'em out" order to repudiate the Bush doctrine in Iraq.

  117. From one of trhe links posted today regarding the Minnesota recount:

"The Franken campaign also is considering asking the U.S. Senate to decide the outcome. While Elias denied that any decision along that track had been made, he said "obviously, the Senate remains an option."

Does anyone know whether the US. Senate is a normal recourse, or if that's specific to Minnesota? I'd hate to think that my state gave up its election process to an obviously partisan body outside the state. Sure, the U.S. Supreme Court might eventually become involved, but (at least in theory) they're supposed to be non-partisan. Okay, okay, that's a little naive.

My main question is about Franken, or even Coleman, being able to bring the vote to the U.S. Senate.

You might reduce sulphur and nitrogen emissions, but coal really ain't much more than CO2 oncst it's burned as Iunderstand it - and you can't take the carbon out of coal to make it burn and make anything other than greenhouse gasses. That Nova about this stuff, had a number that got me personally, because I've been to the Powder River Basin. I was there when this coal pile was first being developed to the scale we have today.
The coal trains leaving the Powder River Basin everyday are 35 miles long now. And that means there are 35 miles of empties rolling in. That's a 70 mile coal train moving all day, everyday.

That Nova was callled HEAT. The section on coal was really good.

Thanks for the feedback on the Minnesota issue.

As for Rachel and the MSNBC boys besting CNN, isn't that kind of like Nader beating out Bob Barr in the '08 Presidential election. (I don't really know if Nader beat Barr, but that also is my point.)

I guess it was two years ago that MSNBC was boasting that they had the biggest ratings increase among cable news networks. I'm sure it was a true statement, but it was also a function of starting from a lower number of viewers.

Don't get me wrong, I watch (that knucklehead) Chris Matthews every night that I'm home. I'm just saying beating out CNN in those time slots is a small first step.

    1980 -
    4,131 million short tons

Because of all the brilliant musicals numbers, A Star Is Born ran really long. In a time period when you went to a "double feature", the length was a major problem for the theater chains.

The biggest cuts were made in the elopement scenes in Nevada (this is the area with the most stills), the Born in a Trunk number, and another almost desperate number where she is trying to entertain him with the number she is doing at the studio.

Thank goodness The Born In A trunk number was completely restored. It is a masterpiece. My son an I have this thing about musicals and we were on a cross country trip by bus when the driver announced "Pocatello" ... couldn't help it - one of those shared brain events, we both sang, "I was born in a trunk at the Princess Theater in Pocatello, Idaho"

  141. RR,

I'm a Cleveland Browns fan, but I follow the Giants because of friends and family and because they're sort of a New York team. (At least, their name says they are.)

I guess by calling Chris Matthews a knucklehead a few minutes ago, I'm obligated to find a stronger term for Mr. Burress. The guy is a talented football player, but Pittsburgh was glad to see him leave. It looks like the Giants now feel the same way.

What he did was stupid, but I don't favor jail time for him. I'd opt for some meaningful community service. I'm not sure what that could be, but there must be some good that could come from this. The Giants have been doing well without him, so his demise may be like the Shockey injury last year. Addition by subtraction.

Time to head out for some basketball. Have a good night all.

CBob, I don't know if you saw Boston Legal this week, but one of the cases was suing the networks for discrimination and failing to serve the public because there is no programming for people over 50.

Some funny lines, but one of the best was a spiel about having the most discretionary income, watching the most hours, and still having brains. It included a rant on the dumbing down of TV with sexy body mindless sitcoms, reality shows, dimwitted game shows, and screaming moderators ... the rant concluded with a shouted, "I WANT SOMETHING TO WATCH".

It was so funny and unfortunately true. CNN giving up on science is just more of the same.

  145. a fun and informative read
An economic history of the US

    It begins like this:

"The year 1776 means one thing and one thing only to Americans: The birth of our nation. But when Adam Smith published his “Wealth of Nations” in 1776 he launched another revolution, an Economic Revolution, by codifying the best practices he found during extensive travels throughout Europe during the 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment. (”The Age of Enlightenment. What about Witches?” demanded the Queen. The White Rabbit had that worried look on his face as he nervously chose his words. “Almost all the Witches had been executed by that time, except in Poland and ah Switzerland. This story is about the world model that came after the model with witches in it.”)"

offers pleasant thoughts as to why the South will not rise again...

Georgia, home to a proud CSA tradition, just reelected a man who used academic deferments and a trick knee to avoid serving his country in battle. Chambliss is proof that all chicken hawks are chicken shit and he is head of the class.

Then throw in Westmoreland, the congressman who demands the 10 Commandments be posted in every public building and he can't even name 2?!? I don't go to church but I still remember that the first is "I am the Lord, your God who brought you out Egypt, out of the house of slavery"

I know you think Obama showed a bit of cowardice not campaigning for Martin in Georgia but it's better to have some room for growth in 2010 since things will have turned around enough to make further gains in both houses then...

As for your thoughts on Yankee greed, just consider it Yankee ingenuity that was able to harness the blood, sweat and riches of an entire people without needing a whip, a chain or a machete to keep its workforce in line...lol

RR, cannot even begin to describe what a privilege and pleasure it is to write a book with this amazing woman. so much work, but we are having a blast. not only did she start covering presidents since JFK, she was a reporter in this town since the 40's. she is telling me first-hand stories about eleanor roosevelt, for god's sake (when faced with ridiculous criticism about her clothing she told helen, "I feel like i'm dressing the washington monument"). it just doesn't get any better than that.

The stock market might come back in less than a year but the shrinkage. … It’s already occurred in investment wealth is going to play itself out in the real economy. That is a wonderful article. I've bookmarked it for closer reading as I just skimmed through. It is one of the first on economics that I have seen that stated Adam Smith's view of labor correctly

"None the less the concentration of wealth and exploitation of workers (think some developing countries) are real problems in Capitalism. Adam Smith saw those problems first but his solution of relying on the “moral sentiments” is toothless"

He did stress that morality as being the only thing that actually allows capitalism to work courtesy of his relationship with his friend and advisor, David Hume. Smith also was one of if not the first to suggest the graduated income tax.

The article also mentioned the thesis, antithesis, synthesis cycle that is at the heart of changes in the human condition.

    Thank you for the link

While looking at the web site I ran across this piece of advise that maybe Obama should consider.

"Prior to starting the lemon detox diet, it is recommended that you start with the colon cleanse for the first couple of days. This will help clear the colon of some of the toxic fecal matter before it is burdened with the extra toxins coming in from the detox diet"
    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/406500/lemon_detox_diet_and_colon_cleanse.html

I sure there are a number of pieces of excrement that will need to be removed before progress can be made.

just had a fascinating story about the Isle of Egg. It is too far off the coast of Scotland to connect to the national power grid so until recently all power was by generator. They now have a modern combination of solar and wind power that services the whole of the island.

The crux of the story is that more and more remote communities and even medium size towns have no need of a national top down power grid. It is cheaper, more efficient, and more dependable to simply have a contained local source.

  184. Chicharones with Tomatoes

    1 1/2 pounds tomatoes; broiled *
    2 fresh chiles seranos; broiled
    3 garlic cloves; peeled, chunked
    1 tablespoon lard
    1 vidalia onions; slice thin
1/4 pound chicharones; break in 1 inch pieces *
    1 tsp oregano
    1 tsp cumin, whole
    1/4 tsp chipotle pepper, ground
    * If you can't find flavorful fresh tomatoes, use a one pound can of Italian plum tomatoes and a handful of sundried tomatoes instead.

*Chicharones or chicharron are fried pig skins, also called cracklings. They come in fat and thin pieces. This recipe uses a mix of fat and thin, which is what you generally find in packages in the US.

Add tomatoes, fresh chiles and garlic to a blender. (If using fresh tomatoes, also add 2/3 cup of water, if using canned tomatoes use all of the liquid in the can.) Blend until smooth.

Heat lard in a frying pan, fry onions over high heat for a few minutes. The onions should be wilted but not browned. Add tomato sauce and spices. Cook over high heat a few minutes, stirring, so that the sauce thickens. Add chicharones and stir.

The chicharones need to cook until they are very soft. Depending on how hard the chicharones are, it may take from 5 to 15 minutes. The sauce should cover the chicharones, add more liquid (dry vermouth, wine or beer) if necessary and stir occasionally.

Serve in tacos, over noodles or rice. Serves two

Thanks for the Egg Island story.

    Craig -
Agreed on Obama not being pinned down. But it's also smart not to pursue oil company taxes when oil goes to $49.00 a barrel. It's the gas taxes at the other end, that's where the rubber will meet the road. And Obama has to sell it, he could get some help with this, but in the end he has to do it.

Every country that's bit the bullet on this has come out ahead.

    http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/states/

I was looking at Utah and New York. New York spends 3 times the money for the same result as Utah assessment wise. Utah and DC make the more money= better results questionable.
One other difference with Utah and New York. Utah has fewer students who qualify for the free lunch program. Poverty is always a factor in education.

  212. "An associate lawyer in a Chicago-based firm whose partner served on a finance committee for then-Sen. Barack Obama has advocated for the elimination of the U.S. Constitution's requirement that a president be a "natural-born" citizen, calling the requirement "stupid" and asserting it discriminates, is outdated and undemocratic.

The paper was written in 2006 by Sarah Herlihy, just two years after Obama had won a landslide election in Illinois to the U.S. Senate. Herlihy is listed as an associate at the Chicago firm of Kirkland & Ellis. A partner in the same firm, Bruce I. Ettelson, cites his membership on the finance committees for both Obama and Sen. Richard Durbin on the corporate website."

... So it sure looks like Obama's people have looked into the matter of 'natural born' as far back as early 2006."

The Gas tax is where it is at. Now is the best time to do a gas tax increase .25 to start and a nickle every 6 months. Do this before everybody gets out of the conservation mood. The way gas is going down around here it had better be damn fast..
Right now we remember the pain of $4 gas in 6 months, not so much. the tax should all be directed at investing in alternative energy and helping poor people adjust. A program to insulate all the old junk houses in my neighborhood. You should not pay more for utilities than you do in n rent. Help them buy fuel efficient cars. When gas raises all they can afford is the old gas guzzling clunkers.

On the melamine, a couple of days ago I read , they are finding it in trace amounts in baby food that has never been to China. Seems it is leaching out of the plastic jars. That iws why I buy the cheap whiskey in glass and not plastic. It tastes different IMO.

The great thing about the net is you never know how old, educated, wealthy any one you meet on line is. And when I used to hang out on use net we had people from all over the world. So I got to learn little things like a snickers bar is not the same here as in England.
But also as you argue back and forth you see a vast variety of views.

And, boy howdy, toto are we ever not in Kansas anymore.
