I wonder where all this stuff was made.
I saw that the Obama book we printed was in the bargain bin at Barnes & Nobel for $5. It was hopelessly out of date since it was printed before the nomination.
I think I'll save my money and use it on something fun, like going skiing tomorrow.

The list is loaded for me today. I once went to a party in the Santa Monica mountains held by some ex pat Australians whose idea of a party was to take hostages on Friday night and release the still living on Sunday.
One of the other guests was a delightful man named Ted Hamilton whom I didn't recognize and who was introduced as a former Government official. We had an absolutely wonderful political conversation that we got so into that some busy body went and asked his wife (girlfriend?) if she wanted it broken up. Her response and why I've liked Australian women ever since, "For heaven sakes NO! I'm just glad he found someone else to listen to him for a change".
Anyway turns out that in addition to being a politician, he was a singer and actor and had starred as "The Pirate King" in the "The Pirate Movie" based on Pirates of Penzance. It still makes me smile when it turns up on TV.

The hedge fund era as we have known it may have come to an end, with returns evaporating, clients demanding their money and officials eager to tighten regulation, but experts say the industry is poised to emerge stronger once it consolidates, cleans up shop and opens the blinds.
While hedge funds are not required to publicly disclose much information, the industry stands to book its first year of negative performance since private groups first started tracking data about a decade ago. Hedge fund investments lost 22% of their worth through November, according to BarclayHedge, which collects data from around 2,200 funds. In light of the unprecedented turmoil and huge market shifts from day to day, few were nimble enough to avoid losses, leaving hardly any portfolio unscathed

END CORPORATE "PERSONHOOD"
An 1886 Supreme Court clerk's headnotes misreading (Santa Clara County vs. Southern Pacific Railroad) applied the 14th Amendment to corporations, extending to them all the rights, but none of the responsibilities, of human persons. The result has been the steady erosion of our democracy since then, and the consequent rise of the corporate state, which is primarily responsible for the military-corporate-media-academic complex, the expansion of the often brutal U.S. global empire (including the IMF, WTO, and World Bank) with its protecting militarism, and the destruction of our only planet's environment, all in the service of corporate capital's endless lust for power and profits. Corporate personhood is at the core of all of our problems. Ending it is the start of the way back to humane civilization.

U.S. December consumer confidence below 45.8 expected
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Just when you thought it was safe to settle down for a quiet end to a really rough year, Hamas and Israel decided to mix it up again.
As Hamas lobs rockets into Israel, Israel pounds Hamas and the death toll mounts, the few energy traders out there who decided not to take the week off predictably ran up crude prices to match the bloody score in Gaza. Read about latest oil price spike.
Once again, news from that violent corner of the planet sends a shiver through the economy, reminding everyone that the break we've enjoyed from high oil prices was fragile and that anything that smells like heightened tension in the Middle East can -- and will -- jack oil prices higher in a flash.
The U.S. markets have been transfixed for the past few months by the calamity on Wall Street and billion-dollar bailouts thrown at the banks and auto makers. The luxury, if we can call it that, of being able to focus on core problems in the financial sector has been possible in part because crude oil prices have plunged from their record highs, eliminating a major distraction.
Gasoline prices are back below $2 a gallon, where most Americans think they belong. This has brought welcome relief to the economy. Imagine how much worse those all-important holiday retail sales might have been if gas prices had remained at $4 a gallon. Imagine also how much more damaging oil imports would have been to the nation's already huge trade deficit if they had remained close to their $147-per-barrel peak in July.

Since this is the penultimate day of December, I think Fearless leader should take a break from writing in order to make like Santa Claus and show up on all of our doorsteps at exactly 12:01 AM on Jan 1 as the dark haired first footer armed with the traditional Scotch and a lump of coal.
"A custom known as "first footing" dictates that the first person to cross a home's threshold after midnight on New Year's Eve will determine the home-owner's luck for the new year. The ideal visitor bears gifts—preferably whiskey, coal for the fire, small cakes, or a coin—and should be a man with a dark complexion. Why? The answer hearkens back to the 8th century, when the presumably fair-haired Vikings invaded Scotland: a blond visitor was not a good omen. "

We could bomb the surrounding states if they don't cooperate-
The US Government’s Secret Colorado Oil Discovery
Rense
Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil reserve in the world - more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction. Three companies have been chosen to lead the way. Test drilling has already begun
Dear Reader,
Five months ago, the U.S. Energy Department announced the results of a land survey
It was conducted to determine the official amount of oil a thousand feet deep in the Rocky Mountains
They reported this stunning news:
We have more oil inside our borders, than all the other proven reserves on earth.
Here are the official estimates:
* 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
* 18-times as much oil as Iraq
* 21-times as much oil as Kuwait
* 22-times as much oil as Iran
* 500-times as much oil as Yemen
And it’s all right here in the Western United States.
James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says, “We’ve got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East.”
More than 2 TRILLION barrels. Untapped.
“That’s more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in the world today,” reports The Denver Post. --- More very interesting comments from the first commentator

Can the Vatican be looking at the % of converts here? lets get them Baptized and they are ours forever--lot s of young minds to manipulate.
Vatican Issues Instruction on Bioethics
The Vatican issued its most authoritative and sweeping document on bioethical issues in more than 20 years on Friday, taking into account recent developments in biomedical technology and reinforcing the church’s opposition to in vitro fertilization, human cloning, genetic testing on embryos before implantation and embryonic stem cell research.
The Vatican says these techniques violate the principles that every human life — even an embryo — is sacred, and that babies should be conceived only through intercourse by a married couple.
The 32-page instruction, titled “Dignitas Personae,” or “The Dignity of the Person,” was issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican’s doctrinal office, and carries the approval and the authority of Pope Benedict XVI.
Under discussion for six years, it is a moral response to bioethical questions raised in the 21 years since the congregation last issued instructions.
It bans the morning-after pill, the intrauterine device and the pill RU-486, saying these can result in what amount to abortions.
The Vatican document reiterates that the church is opposed to research on stem cells derived from embryos. But it does not oppose research on stem cells derived from adults; blood from umbilical cords; or fetuses “who have died of natural causes.”
The document does not prohibit the use of vaccines developed using “cell lines of illicit origin” if children’s health is at stake. But it says that “everyone has the duty” to inform health care providers of personal objections to such vaccines.
The church also objects to freezing embryos, arguing that doing so exposes them to potential damage and manipulation, and that it raises the problem of what to do with frozen embryos that are not implanted. There are at least 400,000 of these in the United States alone.
“Our advice is that freezing should not take place,” said Bishop Elio Sgreccia, president emeritus of the Pontifical Academy for Life. “Because once it is done, you’re in a situation where to correct the error implies a further offense. Once you have them, what do you do with them?”
The Vatican’s intended audience is not only individual Roman Catholics, but also non-Catholic doctors, scientists, medical researchers and legislators who might consider regulating stem cell research and other recent developments in biomedical technology.

it can't be comforting to Obama to know that as a man who smokes, he's 23 times more likely to get lung cancer than a man who doesn't smoke. Taxpayers will foot his medical bills.
Posted by: sock drawer open | December 30, 2008 2:57 PM
Obama recently drew headlines when he described the more than 3,000 Americans killed in Iraq since 2003 as wasted lives. (He subsequently apologized.) But he should know that about 600,000 Americans have died of lung cancer during the four years of the Iraq war -- almost all of them because of smoking.

Lou Dobbs Concern Troll for America
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker
| December 30, 2008 5:03 PM
Patsi,
I'm far from an expert, but that's never stopped me from offering an opinion. Peter King is as visible as any Republican in the state right now, but even saying that, I'd bet 75% of the upstate voters don't know who he is, or anything about him. Certainly, Giuliani is a bigger name, but he's more apt to seek the Governor's Mansion than the Senate seat and I haven't seen or heard anything about him, since long before Election Day.
As blue as New York has been in recent presidential elections, there are still many upstate counties that have historically been Republican strongholds. (I live in one of them.) Also, we have had long serving Republican Senators in Al D'amato and Jacob Javits, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility for someone like Congressman King to have a shot.
He seems to have a talent for being both abrasive and either likable or reasonable at the same time. In case you haven't noticed it on this blog, abrasive plays well in New York City. Not so much in my part of the world.
King is definitely smart to get his name out there early and to take free shots at Carolyn Kennedy or anyone else, who might be considered by Governor Paterson.
If the person Paterson appoints, gets out there and works as hard as Senator Clinton did, and appears to be effective, King may decide to stay right where he is. If the appointee stumbles, or appears to be less than ambitious, King will be ready to shake a lot of hands and eat a lot of chicken in upstate New York, and he'll definitely have a fighting chance at the seat.

Patsi,
Yes, someone suggested the other day that Caroline may be running because it's what her Uncle Ted wanted. If that's her primary motivation, she's not likely to be a good senator. That is, unless she just happens to be one of those super-motivated kids who jumps in with both feet for any challenge.
Chuck Shumer will always be there when any camera is rolling or hot microphone is available, but just because of who she is, Caroline will get as much news exposure as she's willing to handle.
Right now, Peter King is hoping Caroline gets the nod because he thinks his experience will trump her name. I'm hoping that in two years, we'll be able to say, "Peter, you should have been careful what you wished for."
Caroline needs to get in the Senate now. That way, she'll always have seniority over Chris Matthews, IF he makes it.
Posted by: EdVB
| December 30, 2008 6:09 PM
Yes -- I posted that Uncle Ted theory, because someone who ought to know told me that he had pushed her on it. (Not in any bad way, I should say -- I believe he really wants the line to continue and thinks she'd do a great job. And she certainly might.)
Boy I do hope Chris Matthews goes down in flames if he runs in a primary. He sends no thrill up my leg.

Lou Dobbs Must Go !
See folks, as Lou Dobbs was putting up his felony based climate experts, before he took his 2 week Christmas vacation.
I got a RECORD EVENT REPORT from the National Weather Service. This came to my house this fall :
RECORD EVENT REPORT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK, TX
230 AM CDT FRI SEP 12 2008
...RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM RAINFALL SET AT LUBBOCK...
A RECORD RAINFALL OF 7.46 INCHES WAS SET AT LUBBOCK YESTERDAY...
SEP 11...THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 2.64 SET IN 1917. IT ALSO
BREAKS THE ALL-TIME CALENDAR DAY RECORD OF 5.70 INCHES SET ON JUNE 1
1967...AND IT BREAKS THE ALL-TIME 24-HOUR RAINFALL RECORD OF 5.82
INCHES SET ON OCTOBER 18 AND 19 1983.
-------------------
Except, .... it rained more at my house, ( 8 1/2 in. in 24 hrs.)
I have seen 3 rain fall events here, at Lubbock, Texas at my house, that are each a "one off" events. And I've seen them in the last 21 months.
7.46 INCHES in 24 hours belongs in the Amazon, not Lubbock, Texas.

Just in case anyone wants to know why health care is draining families and taxpayers....because it's not really "health" care....
Just had a call from someone who had to fly east to be with his 90-something grandmother. Over a year and a half ago she had a stroke (it was the least of her medical problems) -- but a neighbor found her barely alive and the med techs electrocuted her back to life. Since that time her quality of life has been terrible. My friend says hundreds of thousands of dollars have now been spent to keep her in an absolutely horrible state, something she had never wanted but had never translated into a legal statement. Her home has now been sold to keep moving her from one facility to another. One of the few things she's said was to the friend who found her -- "Why did you call 911?"
Make that living will, sports fans.

Philip J Berg has a new lawsuit challenging Obama’s eligibility:
"Berg today, with co-counsel Lawrence J. Joyce, Esquire, filed another lawsuit in Federal Court in the United States District for the District of Columbia on behalf of Retired Colonel Hollister against Barry Soetoro a/k/a Barack Hussein Obama demanding to know Obama’s real name and if he is constitutionally qualified to be President. 2006 statistics:
Estimates show that about 27% of Medicare's annual $327 billion budget goes to care for patients in their final year of life.
A majority of that in the last 30 days.

I am not answering for Colorado Bob, but for me, Dobbs is the most devious. Network cable show on CNN. Makes it look the most respectable. Hannity has a cable show also but he is on Fox and that in and of itself is suspect.

The living will is important, but even more so for emergency situations is the POLST (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment). You can get a copy from your physician. Make sure that doctor has a signed copy, that you have a copy in your papers, and that anyone likely to be making decisions on your behalf has a copy. Some hospitals will keep them on file as well or you can hand it to them any time you have to go to the hospital for anything.
It is a DETAILED list of treatment to be given under a variety of circumstances if you are not able to speak for yourself.
For example, I've chosen moderate intervention (feeding tubes, oxygen etc.) as long as recovery can be practically expected, but if not send me to a hospice, make me as comfy with drugs as possible and leave me alone.
Physicians are legally required to adhere to the signed and witnessed POLST

Just because he is asking questions about the Chosen One, doesn't make them lies. He did sit in rev. wright's church for over 20years, he was and probably still is friends with a man who bombed buildings in the United States (Ayers). And, he hasn't been in the Senate long enough to do anything but vote PRESENT. those are not lies, those are truths. Like it or not Obama, has alot of skeltons in his closet. And, was did it always take him so long to come out against, someone or something from his past?

Someone took the time to write down some of the worst in 2004. Nothing has changed, but I'll try to find something more current. He regularly uses quotes out of context and twists what was said. Since there is no one to correct him except other shows, it often sounds reasonable.

There was the one bit where Fey used Palins actual words, but the rest was comedy writers exagerating on her comments.
Of course, some of the Palin remarks were very revealing of someone with little curiosity and less education, but she knew how to rouse the rabble , was a good speaker, and sold all the knee jerk talking points really well.

Broe v. Reed: Reply to SOS
"Washington’s Secretary of State claims he has no duty to determine if a presidential candidate is even an American citizen running under his legal name. Yet, there is not a single document in the public record available for inspection that could establishes as a matter of law that Obama is 1) a natural born citizen of the United States; 2) an American citizen; or 3) that his legal name is Barack Obama. …
We stated a claim in mandamus. The Secretary claims that we have the burden of establishing that Obama is not qualified to assume the office! We have proved that Obama did not establish that he was a “natural born citizen” of the United States at the time of the election. He has not produced a single piece of credible evidence that he is an American citizen, let alone a natural born citizen, and he has not produced any document showing a change of his legal name from Barry Soetoro to Barack Hussein Obama. Palin isn't unqualified because she is a woman. She is unqualified because she lacks intellectual curiosity, speaks in nothing but soundbites, takes positions so far right as to fall off a flat earth.
She would be unqualified if she were male. That opinion has nothing to do with her gender.

As far as the "chat chat chat" is concerned, this place has always been a mixture of issue information, general conversation, music, trivial silliness, and politics. Indulging in one doesn't mean you can't participate in all the rest.
Talking about cute things children say about their anatomy is just as valid a human interaction as a discussion of Middle East history.

If it had nothing to do with her gender then why demonize her instead of the many Republican fools in the race? Oh, you bet it was gender. And every "Caribou Barbie" comment proved it.
What you don't get is that it all translates to women's wages. Every snarky gender-based Caribou Barbie comment ends up in paltry women's paychecks. Sad but true. Barbie Bucks.

Just as many jokes were made about "who let the dogs out" crosses on bookcases, and noun verb and 9/11 about male candidates during the primaries.
The only reason she got more is because she was the nominee and she turned in such a poor performance on the issues that she deserved to be ridiculed as a caricature not a serious political candidate.
There were any number of intelligent, well educated, politically aware, and principled Republican women McCain could have chosen. I might not have agreed with them, but I wouldn't think they were tossed into the campaign just to have a pretty female face on the buttons.
Palin is the kind of woman who makes it harder for other women trying to make strides in business. She acted like a Barbie doll and got called one.

"In Washington state's Broe v. Reed case, however, plaintiff's attorney Stephen Pidgeon says a unique state statute grants everyday citizens the required standing.
"These lawsuits have pointed their fingers at the various secretaries of state and said, 'You handle the elections, it's your job [to verify Obama's eligibility],'" Stephen Pidgeon told WND, "and the secretaries of state have said, 'No, it's not our job. You the voter have to prove he was ineligible.' But when the voters try to do it, the courts tell them they have no standing. So it presents a catch-22.
"Here, we have standing by means of statute," Pidgeon continued. "This particular statute provides for any registered voter to challenge the election of a candidate if the candidate at the time of the election was ineligible to hold office."

I for the life of me can't understand how people can call Gov. Palin a failure, or how she makes it harder for any woman to make strides? She was a Mayor, and is still a Governor. Not many women make it that far. Or for that fact not many men either. And, you all think Caroline Kennedy, has more to offer. What job, as she ever worked? She probably has more money then God. So she worked to make schools better, and she wrote a book. I guess now a days writing a book or two, can not only help you get elected to The Senate, but it can also get you elected POTUS.

Lampe,
We all heard the same thing as you. We know Michelle said America is mean. You can easily pull up tapes and articles on the internet proving it, in the same way others pull up tapes on Fox and Hannity lies. But you don't need to do that, because we all know it happened.
It sounds like you haven't worked your way through this yet, but many others used to feel the same way that you do. I will never go back to watching MSNBC either, and it is laughable to me to hear others say that they are reputable and others channels are not. They're all the same, except some have a different goal than others, a different agenda. If 'fair and balanced' is so funny to say about FOX, then it is every bit as hilarious to say about MSNBC.
When some ridicule what you say, they are simply trying to throw you off balance. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone, unless you want to.
The real Puma's are the one's that think they won.

Rita, If the menu isn't showing paste, then you probably didn't get the copy done correctly. Instead of right clicking, you can also go to the Edit menu at the top left of your page. You highlight what you want to copy in blue (the video explained how to highlight by running your cursor over it, then go to edit at top of page and left click it. Once you get down to the comment box, do what you always do to post, but go up to edit and click paste. If paste isn't highlighted, then you didn't get your copy done correctly.
Copying the address from top of page you want to link, make sure the whole line gets highlighted, from http: all the way across. It must still be blue when you left click your copy tab.
I know you can do this. Just take your time and keep trying. I taught myself to use the computer by using the help menu and also you can search for any questions there are, and many will post articles to help you.
Please ask as many questions here as you need to, because we all went through the same thing when we started out. Don't give up!

Thirty Years Ago: Ali And Foreman Rumbled In The Jungle
10.29.04 - By Frank Lotierzo - GlovedFist@Juno.com - Thirty years ago on the morning of October 30th 1974, Muhammad Ali 44-2 (32) was just hours away from entering the ring to challenge undisputed heavyweight champion George Foreman 40-0 (37). The fight with Foreman represented more than just a chance for him to become the second former heavyweight champ to regain the title. A victory over Foreman meant validation and redemption for Ali.
By October 1974, seven years had passed since Ali was stripped of his heavyweight title for refusing Induction into the U.S. Army on April 28th 1967. After the then Cassius Clay defeated Sonny Liston in February of 1964 to capture the heavyweight title, he announced that he was a member of the Nation of Islam, and was adopting the name Cassius X. Two weeks later he was given the name Muhammad Ali by Elijah Muhammad the leader of the Nation of Islam. From that point on, Ali was a marked man by the so called establishment, and viewed as someone dangerous and capable of in sighting a race war between Whites and Blacks.
After a 43 month forced exile from boxing, Ali returned to the ring. In the four years in between his comeback fight with Jerry Quarry in October 1970, up to his title fight with George Foreman in October 1974, Ali fought for the title once, and went 12-2 in 14 fights.

Sturg, I, and my hooch mates, held Clay in the utmost contempt because of his shenanigans with his draft board (this was before all the other stuff happened.) We figured if Elvis could serve, Clay could as well. There was no racial component to our indignition.

Good morning. I see it got a little hot in here last night. Glad I went to bed early to rest up for my 5 days off. Whoppee. The down side of my time off is now I have time to work on all these projects I see stacked up around me.
Chloe, I used to be glued to MSNBC. I emailed several atta boys to Keith O. Then he turned his ire from Bush to Hillary. I tried to write and tell him what I thought about that and my emails came back with some error message. I stopped watching. A couple of nights ago I tried to watch him again and just couldn't. He now turns my stomach.
During the campaign I did tune in to Fox, when before I wouldn't be caught dead watching it. They did, at that time, seem more fair and balanced. I can't do Hannity or O'Reilly.

Patsi,
Big snow day in upstate NY, so I've been talking about the weather and drive in with my co-workers as they show up. I walk to work, so as long as I can stay above my shoes, my trips are usually uneventful.
I really don't know anything about Louise Slaughter and only know of Carolyn Maloney since her name was bandied about as a possible candidate for Hillary's seat. I've read that Maloney has "paid her dues," but Governor Paterson has two "stars" in Andrew Cuomo and Caroline. In New York, star power usually trumps experience, so I'd say they are both long shots.
The one dark horse that interests me is Bob Kerrey. Apparently, there's some sort of a palace coup taking place at the New School, so he may give Paterson a way around choosing between Caroline and Andrew. Name Kerrey now, then let all who are interested duke it out for the 2010 nomination.
Personally, I'd rather see Kerrey stay and fight the academicians, but the fact is that even if he wins that battle, he'll probably be in a weakened position, so moving on now is probably a smarter choice.

Hillary Clinton proved a woman of resolve and class
"The most powerful woman in the world.
So Hillary Clinton will become with the dawn of a new White House. Madam Secretary of State. A strong hand in a velvet glove, extended to the globe on behalf of the most anticipated presidency in generations.
Short of Barack Obama, no American today has a greater opportunity to shape international history than does New York’s departing junior U.S. senator.

Mornin', all, and almost g'bye to '08.
I guess I'll have to go back and see what happened last night. Patsi, thanks for wasting your breath (and OSH, you might as well ask crap not to stink) - KC did it for a while, I did it for a while, in fact many have (most have left) and the frickin' Energizer Bunny of juvenile put downs and one liners just keeps going and going and... Anyway, Jamie and Patsi have my undying gratitude.
And Flatus, a lot of folks in the US felt Clay was just using the CO status of NoI to avoid the draft - I saw it as a possibility, but I didn't condemn him for it - that was a growing movement back then, and if Freedom of religion means anything, it should mean the government respects the CO status that results from a religion based rejection of war. I did see a bit of a disconnect between a man who made his living fighting other people claiming he couldn't fight on behalf of his country because his religion forbade it, but he wasn't trying to kill anyone and but hey, what did I know about NoL tenets? Damned little. I heard similar criticism of members of the Quaker faith - generally from people who knew damned little about it as well. But then, I wasn't clamoring to get to vietnam, either. Just curious, did you hold the same contempt for people who took academic deferments? Or was this just a case of believing CC was manipulating the suystem by conveniently canging religions to avoid the draft?

The real fight was Ali and Sonny Liston. Liston learned to fight in prison. He beat the crap outta people in prison. He was a feared man. When Ali decided to fight him, people thought he would get killed. Ali did something nobody expected, he taunted Liston as often as he possibly could. Liston could not understand this. In prison and in boxing everybody feared him, but Ali didn't. They said in prison, the only people guys like Liston feared were guys who were crazy. Liston started to think that Ali was crazy. Ali ended up winning the fight and shocking the world.

At the risk of injecting sometihing political into the discusson today, what are peoples' thoughts on the Reid-Blago-Burris-Cornyn kerfuffel?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/31/washington/31congress.html?_r=1&hp
From my perspective, there doesn't seem to be a good outcome. Blago undoubtedly has the legal power to appoint Obama's successor. And anyone he appoints will be under a cloud. And I'm not sure Reid has the authority under the Constitution to refuse to seat Burris. And now Cornyn agrees with Reid (of course he just wants an election an IL repug can enter and vie for the seat). It just goes to show what I think about Reid is confirmed once again - the guy hasn't got a clue about leading - and his hip has to be sore from shooting from it so often.

You're right, Pogo -- ain't no easy way out on this one. Looks like the Dems should be looking for a way to save face right now, because legally, Burris is the appointee. And it's true --so far Blago is still presumed innocent. (I keep wondering what "real" evidence Fitzgerald has....hope he didn't jump the gun.)
Posted by: Patsi
| December 31, 2008 12:04 PM
Pogo
Without some judicial exercise, like it or not, Blagojavitch is the Governor of the State. As such, he has the right to make the appointment and Burris is the Senator.
The only way out would be to do a change in the Illinois Constitution and take the power away from the governor, or to let Burris serve but immediately call for a special election to replace him.
Just because you think Blago is a crook doesn't mean you can throw out the law.

Agree, Jamie. We've seen enough trashing of law and the constitution these past eight years.
Posted by: Patsi
| December 31, 2008 12:13 PM
Jamie,
I agree with your post just now about having to respect the law. But if Blago was anything close to a true statesman -- as opposed to a self-serving egomaniac -- he could have solved this easily by following the Constitution and and still achieving the goal of "Illinois representation in the U.S. Senate."
The solution: Ask a panel of senior elected state officials (Democratic legislative leaders, Democratic cabinet members, however you want to define the group) to simply nominate a candidate for Blago to appoint. No veto power, no questions asked. That gets you the untainted appointee that everyone wants, and Blago is still the one making the appointment. Problem solved.
But you can't do that when the governor has chosen to use the power he derives from the people simply as a weapon to defend his own political career at all costs. It is the absolute height of cynicism. And don't let's even get started on the race card.

Lardo
The law is always written in hopes that the majority will obey it. If you try to design it to cover every weasel likely to abuse and wiggie in such a way as to avoid consequences, you destroy freedom for everyone.
Your solution assumes that Blago is a reasonable man willing to accept compromise when we already know that he is a self serving SOB.
What bothers me is that Burris who seems to have lived an honorable life or service to the community is allowing himself to be used in this fashion.
It's the pits, but Burris is in until an election (special or scheduled) can be held.

LL, sorry, that horse is already out of the barn. I don't for a second think that Reid's preemptive rejection of Blago's (excellent IMHO) appointment - what's that old saying? Act (or something) in haste, repent at leisure - had a shred of a racial motive, but Blago shrewdly put that into play. But leave it to our Dem leadership to find a way to screw up anything they have an opportunity to. What's Reid's alternative? Leave the seat unfilled until the current term expires? Sounds like shooting one's self in the foot to me. Hold a special election? Expensive, legally suspect, and that leaves the seat vacant during the firs 4-6 months of the Obama administration - precisely when the Dems will need every vote they can muster to try and advance Obama's legislative initiatives. Yep, Reid's drawn a line in the sand - only he drew it as a box around himself, and may have created a minor constitutional showdown to boot.. Couldn't he see that coming? JHC!
Jamie, Patsi, we reach common ground, again. Go figure.
Posted by: pogo | December 31, 2008 12:56 PM
The appointment had little to do with Blago fulfilling his duty as Gov. I could just see the wheels turning under his arrogant hair. Oh, how to parlay this into a career move, a book deal, a TV movie starring Charlie Sheen...?

blue, whether Blago did it TO fulfull his constitutional duty or not, he has the power to make that appointment under the Illinois Constitution. Arrogance and a criminal charge - not yet followed by as much as an indictment - do not remove that obligation. And please, can anyone deny that Fitz was doing everything he could to get the spotlight on himself and to convict Blago in the press and the mind of the public when he had the federal jackboots drag himinto t squad car at the crack of dawn in front of the cameras and went before the cameras to make sure EVERYONE knew about Blago's phone calls?
Don't misunderstand - Blago may indeed be guilty of a crime - frankly I don't know, although I'm betting he is eventually convicted of something - and he's definitely guilty of gross stupidity - but that's a different issue for a different day and in a different forum.

pogo, i agree because if he doesn't have the legal power for that, he doesn't have it for any other official action (like signing bills, admin decisions, pardoning, etc.) that he is taking and has been taking since it hit the fan. if he did lose the power, at what point in time did he lose this power? when arrested? the date of the tapes? the day when reid said his pick would not be seated?
you better believe there's some power hungry prosecutor, less scrupulous than fitz, out there drooling in wait for his chance to instantly unseat/dethrone his particular elected official.

Pogo, the events I recalled were in 1962, or the latest, 1963, i.e., before we had any significant involvement in Vietnam; that came in 1965 although Tonkin was in 1964.
My memory says that his pleas to the draft board centered around his being intellectually deficient--that he simply was too dumb to be inducted. Note that I didn't say fight--we weren't fighting anybody at that time.
It wasn't until he lost all his appeals based on stupidity that Clay decided to get religion. Up until that point I considered him a scumbag. After his embracing of religion, I considered him a religious scumbag.
You asked about educational deferments. Consider this. Most people having the deferments would end up being officers. I didn't want officers who felt they were too good to lead enlisted swine into battle; at the time, there were plenty of real men willing to lead others when their country demanded that duty of them. Of course, I'm disparaging such people as Cheney who sought never-ending deferral.

I am for the Senate refusing to seat Burris. I do not believe this should preclude him from being appointed at a later date when the mess is resolved. I think Lardo's idea is the BEST I have heard, and it's too bad that Governor EGO cannot show even a moment's humility by acting like a person who really wants to put integrity above personal ambition. It's a sorry sight and he really should be ashamed.
Pogo, regardless, it is my understanding that the U.S. Senate can refuse to seat a member if they deem it appropriate. I do feel that Obama has Reid's backside covered by once again saying that the appointment should not go through. He made it clear it wasn't about Burris and it wasn't about race; it was about the morally bankrupt Governor who still thinks he has done nothing wrong and will not own up to the political realities that confront him.
Like Patsi said "oh those crazy serbs"... :-)

ET, that understanding of yours is the subject of fairly vigorous debate amond constitutional law scholars aas we speak - the refusal to seat a member has to be based on constitutional authority or Senate Rules since those are the exclusive sources of the senate's power to act. All this constitutional law stuff can be pretty complicated, and isnot necessarily intuitive. It will be fleshed out in detail in the coming weeks I expect. As it is right now, Reid's opinion, whether backed by Obama (who, BTW has NO legal power to approve or disapprove the appointment either as senator vacating the seat, PEOTUS or POTUS) is the proverbial "opinion" (whose analo is "asshole")
Well, I gotta go. Keep it legal and between the lines, and avoid the idiots on the roads tonight - they'll be out there.

Re: Blagojevich ---friends(moderate Dems) in Dupage County (very big Republican cty) tell me that they can't keep the neighbors from sneering and telling them that there is no diff between the two.......I like Blago when he ran for Gov,,,and even when he looked like he made a few mistakes,,,,,cos he came from very humble beginings ,,,some here are saying that t he influence of his wife is what changed him---me I say you can't change anyone's character,,,,he just hid the bad one that he had pretty good for a while,,,,,,It looks like its all about money with him,,,so Im inclined to believe as does the person that said he is looking how to make $ out of all of this...I like the Sheen family --if any one of them make star in his movie----I won't
Choe
More things in common---I don't watch msnbc at all,,I tried cos off Craig----but can't ,,,at certain times,CNN for the financial news,,,I look forward to Christine Amanpoure's new show that she will have,,,do like Rich Sanchez,,,but otherwise not much cable news either ----another is learning the computer,,,it took time but like Cheyenne I can get stubborn also---and managed to learn a new trick,,,,can I get an apple too??
Rita---Chlo is right don't give up,,,,my computer once asked if I could do something else, and give it frikin break-----I took threw it up against the wall,,,grabbed it by its neck shook it around a little more,,,,put it back on my desk,,,and now Im here talking with you---does have its rewards :-))

In the South, it is considered good luck to eat black-eyed peas on New Year's Day because they are thought to symbolize wealth (because they look like little coins when cooked). They also swell when they are cooked, which is another sign of prosperity. Cabbage is also an auspicious item to eat on the new year, as it's leaves can also look like cash.

Concerning the Ali/Liston fight: Malcolm X told Ali to remember the story of David vs. Goliath:
"One man who did believe in Clay was Malcolm X. On the night of Feb. 25, 1964, he followed the Liston bout as intensely as my friends and I did, but from seat "7" at the arena in Miami, a seat arranged by Clay himself. When Clay prevailed, he shocked everyone but Malcolm.
Not one to miss an opportunity, Elijah Muhammad launched a holy war for the fighter's soul before the arena had even cleared. He had all the weapons. He called Clay immediately and offered him the name "Muhammad Ali," an honorarium denied members of the Nation of much longer standing. Two weeks later he made Ali pledge to sever his relationship with Malcolm. Two days after that, on March 8, 1964, Muhammad publicly denounced Malcolm as a "hypocrite," a signal, writes Karl Evanzz in his excellent book, "The Messenger," "that hunting season was about to open for all mammals named Malcolm X." As to Ali, when asked for his reaction to the split, he muttered, "I don't know much about what Malcolm is doing, but I do know that Muhammad is the wisest." So much for loyalty." - Jack Cashill Dec. 17th, 2001 WorldNetDaily
This was something that Muhammad Ali regrets to this day.

carol, wish pogo hadn't left for the day cause his alabama background might have more info on the southern new year's feast. also there are different foods for different southern folk.
i was told that the first thing you put in your mouth in the new year foretold what the rest would be like (therefore eat symbols of health and wealth) and also told to start it off humbly so that it's up hill from there on with black-eyed beans cooked with hog jowl or fatback or ham hock, greens (usually collards) hoppin' john (a delicious rice, onion, beans and ham dish) and cornbread made in an iron skillet.
i'm having the latter fare to start the year humbly.

Re: New Year's good luck meals.
I will be fixing Hoppin' John and cornbread as a throw back to the time I spent in Memphis. There, I usually went to a restaurant on New Year's Day that served the best black-eyed pea salad and yeast rolls. Yum.
I am also making Toll House cookies today since it has been years since I have made them. The cookie most requested from family and friends when I am baking is oatmeal chocolate chip but I have a craving for Toll House today.

I'm surprised. It is only the south that has these New Years food traditions??
Solar when you learn how to do the tamales please share. I tried once and just made a mess. We used to have this place here that made the countries best tamales. He died a while back and took the recipe with him.

It's snowing here so the natives went out sledding and I'm here in my quiet warm house baking Tollhouse too! For New Year's Day I started my own tradition (the rest of the family is down south eating hoppin john) and cook either Mexican or Greek , my two most favorite cuisines. Usually I make tamales, but don't feel like spending that much time in the kitchen. Will probably make taquitos or chilaquiles with beans & rice. Mexican drives my poor old Da crazy with the wait- he once said "No wonder Mexico is a third world country, the food takes so long to prepare who has time to work" Hope that doesn't offend anyone, it wasn't meant to.

Thanks to a very sleepy kid - now engaged in Family Guy watching and dozing on the couch, I have a little time to peek in.
Flatus - Ali appeared for but refused induction in1967. He was stripped of his NY boxing license and title then. He was convicted in of draft evasion, which was upheld by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, but in 1971 his conviction was overturned unanimously by the US SCt, which ruled that his CO status application based on his religion was legitimate and should have been granted.

Jamie, the NYD food story as it was passed down from my mom - whose family was from Opelika., AL (hard to get much more "South" than that) was if you expected to have good fortune in the new year, you had to eat pork (not exactly sure what the significance of the ork was), greens (turnip or mustard usually) for prosperity, and black eyed peas (preferably as Hoppin' John so that they are tolerably edible) for good luck. And we did eat those every year (and will again because I ... just ... can't... not) and hoped it would be better than the last.

I love The Quiet Man!
Here is my recipe for tamales- ( use the instructions from the video for assembling and steaming.) It comes from a great book "Cocina de la Familia", as Jamie said enlist help!.
2 lb. pork butt or shoulder
3 garlic cloves
1 1/2 tsp. sea salt
5 peppercorns
2 tblsp. pure chile powder with mixed chiles- I don't do this- just make more from the following chiles or you don't have to do any of this grinding stuff- just buy good chile powder
3 dried ancho chiles or california or new mexican-seeded, toasted and ground
1 dried chile de arbol -seeded, toated and ground
1/4 tsp. cumin
1 cup flour
3-4 tblsp canola or lard
1/2 dried mexican oregano
1/2 tsp. sea salt- depending on the saltiness of the broth
Cut up port into large pieces, place in large pot, cover with 6 inches of water. Flatten garlic, add to pot with salt and peppercorns. Bring to boil and let simmer about 1 1/2 hrs. until ready to fall apart. Remove pot from heat, let meat cool in broth. Remove meat, reserve broth and cut off any fat you don't want to eat. Shred meat and set aside. Add the chile powder, ground chiles and cumin to 3 cups of the broth and mix thoroughly. Brown flour in an ungreased skillet until lightly toasted; stir and shake the pan so that the flour doesn't burn. Drizzle in some of the oil until the flour is saturated and continue to stir until it is a deep khaki color. Slowly stir in the chile-broth mixture and cook over medium heat until the gravy thickens. Add the oregano and salt to taste. Stir and taste, adding more chile if necessary.
Stir half of the gravy into the shredded pork meat. Set aside3 remaining gravy to be reheated later.
Prepare the tamal batter.
4 cups masa harina
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. sea salt
3 coups lukewarm broth or water
2/3 cup lard or vegetable shortening
Mix masa harina, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl and stir in enough of the broth to make a most batter. Beat the lard with an electric mixer about 5 minutes, until creamy and fluffry. Mix with the masa , adding more water if needed. To make a spreadable batter, continue beating for at least another 10 minutes. Taste for salt and add more if necessary. The batter is ready when a spoonful dropped into cold water floats to the surface.
Line up the pile of corn husks, masa, filling and ties then assemble and steam tamales without opening for an hour. Serve with remaining gravy.
Enjoy!

The more I watch about the Burris appointment, the more I think that Harry Reid and the Senate Dems are being total asses. They welcome traitor Joe with open arms but reject a man with a clean if somewhat hack like record all because their noses are out of joint over Blago.
If Blago can't appoint Burris, then nothing he has done since being arrested is legal. A special election would cost the state (broke like the others) several million dollars.
Just let Burris be a stopgap senator and go on to try Blago for any crimes he might have committed and let the whole matter go into well deserved oblivion.

"Now the entire campaign to de-legitimize Blagojevich is getting harder for U.S. senators and the U.S. attorney handling the case to make, George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley and others told FOXNews.com.
"There is no question that (Burris) is the legitimate successor to Barack Obama. There is no controversy here as a matter of law. The controversy is purely political. People simply don't like the governor who appointed him," Turley said.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, though, said he and his colleagues will not seat Burris since he would enter the chamber "under a shadow" and be "plagued by questions of impropriety."
........
Since Burris has not been sworn in, the first tactic by the Senate may be simply to prevent that from happening, rather than wait until he's sworn in to expel him. But the senators' effort is complicated because Burris technically was appointed through a legal process.
Turley said that Reid would be pursuing a "dangerous precedent" if he tried to block Burris.
"There's no question in my view that this would be an abuse of the Senate's inherent authority."
Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond, said one option for the Senate is to seat Burris and then refer the matter to committee for investigation.
"It's all very murky right now," Tobias said.
........
Both professors said they wouldn't be surprised if the matter headed to court."

you can celebrate Elvis's birthday on the 8th of January. There also is an old fiddle tune called "The 8th of January" but you may know it more as "The Battle of New Orleans." Jimmy Driftwood was singer/songwriter and part time history teacher in Arkansas when he wrote this tune to help keep the students interested in the subject. The year was 1936. It is said that Driftwood wrote over 6,000 songs in his lifetime. Another famous song is "The Tennessee Stud."

AOL: Growing majority worried over eligibility
"An unscientific poll being conducted by America Online reveals more and more people are having second thoughts about Barack Obama's eligibility to occupy the Oval Office.
Those who raised questions about his vague history before the election largely drew scorn from the mainstream media, which cited an online image from Obama's campaign that purportedly proved his U.S. citizenship with a Hawaiian "Certification of Live Birth."
But the latest results from the America Online poll reveal that nationwide only 41 percent of the participants now believe there is no issue to be investigated.
Fifty-three percent nationwide, and majorities in 45 states individually, say "yes" when asked if there is "any merit" to the controversy surrounding his citizenship. Even in Obama's own state, Illinois, the opinion is split 47-47 percent on the issue. "

After learning this information many concerned Americans had doubts about whether the COLB was sufficient proof that Obama was in fact born in Hawaii.
... the conflicting statements of Obama and his sister concerning in which Hawaiian hospital he was born; the failure of any Hawaiian hospital to confirm that Obama and/or his mother were present in any such hospital at the time of Obama's alleged birth in Honolulu; Director of Hawaiian Department of Heath, Fukino, said she has “personally seen and verified that the Hawaii State Department of Health has Sen. It was the most intelligent blogs I have come across on the net. It has been an enjoyable experience and you are all very interesting specimens.

I am a nurse practitioner and provide the medical care for about 1300 inmates at our local jail/prison. Never a dull moment. It is actually my retirement job. I am a retired nurse educator.
Posted by: ct | December 31, 2008 10:11 PM
My aunt was a nurse. Needless to say I have a low opinon of most doctors. :-)
It must be difficult working with that large a population of prisoners. Is it a county jail or a long term facility?

Solar, studying people has always been my favorite hobby. So much I can learn and I see everyone as my teachers even my inmates. I do skip learning anything re: their crimimal activities since if I am seeing them the criminal activity was not very sucessful.
What is really pitiful is that most of the poor people in jail haven't done anything close to what is being done to us by many of those in our government and on Wallstreet.
Posted by: ct | December 31, 2008 10:20 PM
36 years practicing in many different roles as a nurse/clinical nurse specialist/nurse educator/diabetes educator/ etc and it takes all that plus to take care of my inmates. Many have serious mental problems in addition to being excellent manipulators. It has been my most challenging job. It also can be very rewarding.

Solar- don't be silly, I was just teasing too! I didn't respond because I went out for a bit. There is this man on the island with a great irish name and the map of Ireland on his face, hot in a scruffy way.. Well, he is a singer songwriter guitarist, sings irish sounding, sea chantey type tunes. He isn't a technically brilliant singer but anyways sometimes when I hear him sing and he catches my eye, I have to look away for fear he can see too far into my soul. I thought I'd end the year on a good note and go listen for a bit. This island is so weird sometimes. We got 6 inches of snow (maybe) so very few people were at the concert and they stopped early, all done by the time I got there. It was a pretty drive though, the snow is still stuck to the trees and creating all sorts of snow sculptures about.

I just got the coolest message from a very good friend of mine that I met in college. Tedd was editor of the school newspaper and we were both passionate about politics... We found each other on Facebook...
First Tedd wrote: is wondering if conservatives no longer take free markets seriously, why should liberals? - http://washingtonindependent.com/22352/the-ca se-for-spending-more
I wrote to him: Happy New Year Tedd.. Needless to say, I really miss you. The election of 2008 reminds me of the excitement we had in 1992 when Bill Clinton was elected! Love the thought on free markets.. LOL
And then Tedd wrote to me, which turns out to be a "classic me" moment, speaking out against the ideology of a Washington State Employment Security representative who was in our MPA class denouncing government providing public jobs...
Tedd says: "1992 was exciting, but in hindsight Bill was only able to slowdown the coservative bullshit that started in the 60's. Over the past year I've often thought of the heretical verbal drubbing you gave a rep from Employment Security visiting our mpa class because he did "not think government should create jobs.". You were precient, flying in the face of new democrat/pro market bs that dominated until recently. All that bs has been repeatedly refuted by the facts on the ground all over the world."
WOW... you know, sometimes I feel I am far less eloquent than I used to be, maybe a disconnect from the USA, perhaps because I do not attend classes any more and perhaps because my language is used less than before and when I do speak English I often have to use broken words with my customers... This message of Tedd made my first day of 2009 to be a beautiful one.
It's going to be a great year!
HAPPY NEW YEAR

"Have you heard or do you know John Hartford's kid Jamie Hartford? He is a pretty good musician."
Doots -- I've only met Jamie a couple of times, and it was years back. Yes -- his music is great...
John was already pretty sick by the time I first heard Jamie play. (Although John Hartford danced and fiddled his way around cancer for a long time....he kept that sorry disease guessing!).
John was a dear friend -- and one of my personal heroes. And boy did he love that river....

patd -- Maria's eyes seem to change color now...sometimes they are blue, sometimes greenish blue...very interesting. But they always are "sharp." She doesn't miss much!
It's fun and funny to see my only grandbaby with fairly light hair and eyes....both my children were very dark, solid brown eyes....when my son and daughter went into Mexican restaurants, the waiters and waitresses almost always began speaking to them in Spanish.

Patsi,
IMO and it does not account for much, the Hartford album "Steam Powered Airplane" is one of the finest collections of music that has ever been produced.
A friend of mine used play banjo on the General Jackson at Opryland. Hartford had a house on top of the cliffs somewhere along the river. I was able to spend the day with Greg once on the General and when we passed his house, the boat blew its horn and Hartford blew his horn in response. In my mind, very cool.
Happy New Year to you also.
I spent last night at a friends house. He has a western swing band called the Texas Trailhands. They put on a house concert for free. Was fun. We had food and music. Alcohol free.
Allan Chapman is his name. He spent 15 or so years in Nashville working for United Artists as a songwriter. Did you ever run across him in town?

ROFL, Flatus -- Not at all. As people (friends from the music business, and of my children) started sending me pictures of their little daughters this year, I found myself exclaiming each time -- "OH! She's the most beautiful...." etc etc.
I love the way babies/toddlers differ. Two of my great nieces had new sons a little over a year ago. One is as blond and blue-eyed as you'd ever see, and the other (whose father is Hispanic) has jet black hair and sparkling black eyes. I absolutely love seeing their pictures side by side on my fridge -- what a couple of handsome guys. A snapshot of America. And reminiscent of "Giant."
And the funny thing is, the little guy who most looks like he "belongs" in my father's family, is the Hispanic. He does look a lot like his great great granddaddy.

Yes -- John loved that place -- and entertained every holiday season. He was such a fine man. There was an elderly man who lived nearby (on just social security), whose landlord doubled his rent. The old man was one John loved sitting by the river and talking to...and when John learned what was happening, he immediately converted his garage into a "guest house" and invited the old gent to live there. How in the world did America survive all it's years without a CIA to create reasons to spy on people and to disrupt legitimate gatherings and conduct assassinations of Heads of State that did not do the USA's bidding??
Thank god we got the spy network back up and working and that with the wonderful thing known as the internet, everything and anything we write or visit is collected by spy agencies in order to protect "freedom". Now, who is spying on the spys?
Flatus I don't know if you were an "intelligence" worker in the past, and it's no dig on you that I express my great concern about intelligence abuses. Patsi--- love your post to Flatus, about babies,,,,,what you said is right on with what I believe is the first true feelings( collective) all human beings share around the world,,the love of all babies and themselves---the love of your species ?? P.S. there so many babies in our family that is hard to keep tract of all of them----but each and every one of them are a diff, and have their very own little characteristics.
PATD------- it took a little while for me to understand your post above,,,and still working on it-----once again----you fibbed a little to me when you said that you were not a word meister ---you are the best one!
This my favorite one (word) that I have learned from you,,,,,,and I say it over ,,and over,,,I also repeat it cos I say the same thing more than once some times-----------I hope that Craig used it in his book several of times,,,,,sorry could not resist being corny again---------ITERATIVE----- so once again thanks.oops :-)))

My main camera is very old, Patsi. It can not be newer than about 1950 because that is when they quit making that particular style. The camera is a large format camera that is mostly made of wood. To operate it it has to be on a tripod and to focus you have to crawl under a big blanket and the damned image is upside down. Pain in the @ss. Now, the taking lenses are some of the best in the commercial world. They are older but in excellent shape. The negative measures 4x5 inches.
I, too, love the plains. I once drove up Hwy 287 from Ft Worth to Amarillo and it was raining off and on the whole time. Closer I got to Amarillo and I 40 the tornadoes started to appear. Very spooky. Nothing much out there for them to tear up but maybe some fence posts and wire. Still....

I know zero about photography, Dooty....but don't people fight for those vintage cameras? Don't they take a photo in a very different way? (I may have seen that in a tv show...ha)
Oh, yeah -- I love the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles....likewise SW Kansas and Eastern Colorado. It's funny to hear various band members talk about that drive along I-70 between Kansas City and Denver -- once you get past Eastern Kansas, you hit the real plains. Some of the guys I've met -- very few -- LOVE that drive -- others are slightly horrified by the lack of anything, including trees.
To me, there is nothing better than dawn on the plains, and the sound of a train whistle in the distance.

The thread that wouldn't die.
Happy New Year boys and girls.
While working on my "Lou Dobbs Must Go" piece I came across this little item . In 2007 I tried to track some of this stuff real closely, and I saw these things all over the world. This past year , I didn't do it with as much zeal, but this one news item confirms to me that what I saw in 07' hasn't slowed down :
" Following nearly three years of sparse rainfall, 2008 is poised to go into the record books as the state's wettest year ever, eclipsing even the Great Flood year of 1993. "
2008 one of wettest years ever in Mo
( 2008 beat 1993 by a hair in Mo.)
http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/2009-01-01-missouri-precipitation_N.htm
" Missouri State Climatologist Pat Guinan said the most precipitation recorded in Missouri in 2008 was in Unionville, near the Iowa border, where a weather station logged 73.96 inches — almost double the town’s average of 37.26 inches.
But Miller, in Lawrence County, wasn’t far behind, reporting more than 72 inches for the year. "
http://www.joplinglobe.com/joplin_metro/local_story_366215348.html
----------------------
These extreme rain / snow events are increasing in number, and they don't just last for a day or two, many of them have nothing to do with tropical storms. It rained 18 inches in 6 hours at Marble Falls, Texas in 2007 without a hurricane. That one still boggles my mind. Several cities in the Northwest led by Spokane , have just booked the largest snow records ever. Spokane just received 5 feet for the month of December. Countless other places have recorded far more.
This is what the models predicted.
We better get a good FEMA director folks, we're gonna need one.

In terms of insured losses, Hurricane Ike was the most expensive individual event in 2008. Whereas in the previous two years, the US mainland had largely been spared by heavy cyclones, the 2008 hurricane season generated substantial losses which also affected the insurance industry. Six tropical cyclones (Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike) reached the US coast in close succession this year, the severest being Ike, which made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane near Galveston (Texas). The storm surge triggered by Ike submerged large sections of the Texas and Louisiana coast. As the storm progressed over the mainland, extreme precipitation caused more and more damage, resulting in an insured loss estimated at US$ 15bn (not including the claims covered under the National Flood Insurance Program). The overall loss caused by Ike was US$ 30bn. The year’s second most expensive hurricane was Gustav, with an overall loss of US$ 10bn and an insured loss of US$ 5bn.

Just heard something on radio that has crossed my little grey cells a few times. King George and his various dupes and spokesliars keep saying that he has kept us safe from terra since 9/11. With all of that eavesdropping, undercover activities, keeping watch on everyone not to mention the billions spent on anti terra and war on drugs plus all the money spent supposedly wiping out the poppy crops that are now more plentiful than ever, can you explain why heroin and cocaine are so easy to get here in the well protected homeland?
I would love to have one of theoretically investigative type reporters stand up and ask that one.

Train to Nowhere
(B.Keith)
Standing on the platform
Staring down the track
I felt a shiver
When I heard that clickety-clack
Heard the cry of "All aboard"
The ancient whistle blow
I've been waiting here so long
I can't tell friend from foe

I'll meet you down the line
I'm on the train to nowhere
And it's right on time
The conductor was a blind man
And it caused me some concern
When he handed me my ticket
For the point of no return
"You look a little worse for wear
I hate to call your bluff
But if you're going to ride this line
You must be made of sterner stuff"
I begged the brakeman, "Stop this train"
He said, "But what's the use?
You should know by now it's commonplace
For all hell to be breaking loose

Yup, been about 5 or 6 years now since he had the stroke. He took about a 4 year vacation from work and did the recuperation thing. He is now back preforming again albeit a greatly reduced schedule. He is still leading river canoe trips in the Big Bend Nat Park and is also doing trail rides on horse back.
Funny story told after the stroke but before he was released from the hospital he was visited by country music legend Billy Joe Shaver. You may know that Billy Joe lost 2 fingers on his right hand as a young man in a logging accident. The story goes that when Billy Joe walked into the hospital room Fromholz looked up smiled as he held up his hand and said, "Billy Joe, gimme three!"

Hey Gordo, Happy New Year! Surprised there is an article in the Globe magazine. Saw somewhere today that one media group named it the most under reported topic of the year. Can find the link if you would like. I admire you for very rarely reacting to the negative personal comments and sticking to your topic.

Oh and one more thing GOOFO, of course I know what a birth certificate is. I did not known of the acronym COLB, but then there are many acronyms I had not previously heard. SoeterObama is just a phrase created by your fellow conspiracists (last 7 letters r-a-c--i-s-t-s) to further writhe and whine that Barack Obama won the election. Shame on you ! Shame on you and shame on the people who think you are somehow being a courageous participant on this blog. I do wonder how some people sleep at night.

DON'Tt be tossing any shame on me ET, I'll have none of it. Gordo is questioning the whole issue as many others do, maybe not here on this blog, but it did make the Globe today. So obviously he is not alone. He has never said ANYTHING racist nor does he stoop to name calling those who mock him. This sort of bs attitude reminds me of the period of time after 9/11 when one couldn't question Bush without their patriotism being questioned. Don't question the great and mighty O, or maybe you'll be called a racist or even worse- a republican

And I sleep just fine at night, except when I'm wondering what happened to my Party and just where the hell did the journalists go!

Sea, Don't worry about all of this. Don't take it personally.
What's the use?
You should know by now it's commonplace
For all hell to be breaking loose

And one more thing ET, I just looked at my first post- I didn't say anything much, but you got so mad that you're leaving because I greeted Gordo and told him that "I admire him for not rarely reacting to negative personal comments?! Kind of overreacting , don't you think? You ought to buck up.

"... of course I know what a birth certificate is. I did not known of the acronym COLB ..."
COLB is NOT a BC!
-------------------
"SoeterObama is just a phrase created by your fellow conspiracists (last 7 letters r-a-c--i-s-t-s) ... "
His LEGAL name (now) is unknown -- it's a combination of his two most likely legal names.
------------------
"... paranoid bullshit ..."
He admits to dual citizenship at birth -- therefore, he is NOT a "natural born" citizen.
This is from SoetorObama's own site:
“When Barack Obama Jr. was born on Aug. 4,1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdom’s dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That same act governed the status of Obama Sr.‘s children."

Hope everyone's holidays were fantastic, and that you have enough of something left to keep going - money, energy, sleep, food, whatever.
Thanks for the birthday wishes, too. I've always been one of those people who fared quite well having a birthday the day after Christmas. In the last ten years or so it has developed into a rave since people felt like still partying. I got gifts from people who weren't around on my sisters's birthdays. This year it was quiet, and it's a damn good thing.
For all of you who have been having trouble with typekey, I have to say comparing typekey to symantec is eye-opening. Symantec has it all over competition.
Tuesday I was told my auto-protect was OFF. I could not start it, so had to get symantec to call me between 11 and 12 pm - and that's when the fun started.
My contact was Russian, I think. The phone line was horrible. This was succeeded by another Russian. I stayed nice but cried, literally, and hung up. Mistakenly my contract was cancelled an hour later.
I convinced my self that my computer was vulnerable and all my money was probably stolen from my accounts - un-plugged my computer, and cried all night. No sleep till about 11 am the next day. I was figuring out how I could stand to live on my soc sec and pension, and no money as back-up.
I finally got it straightened out, after two days of talking with India. I didn't get nasty with anyone, but my god! It makes me claustrophic, trapped, when I can't move forward even a little. The whole thing qualifies as one of the most nightmarish times of my life.
I'm not really old or sick, but for the first time in my life I have had a little extra money and not had to drag myself to work. I had got used to getting decent sleep and feeling good - I could not stand to think of going out looking for another job which would probably be beyond un-rewarding.
Okay, so no more whining, and so far my money is still safe. But is there a computer safety org that has reps who really speak English???????
Fels good to be back talking with you guys and hearing you squabble.

Don't think anyone has mentioned Senator Pell's passing. Pell Grants helped over 50 million people attend college. Quite a legacy.
