Obama Wants Faster Mortgage Fix

| | Comments (325)

Barack Obama gently withdrew the helping hand that he's been offering to George W. Bush, telling NBC's Tom Brokaw on Sunday that the outgoing administration is moving too slowly on the mortgage crisis.

"I'm disappointed that we haven't seen quicker movement," Obama said on "Meet the Press."

It was a rare bit of criticism from the President-Elect, who has held his punches against Bush since winning the presidency. Both men have been trying to present a united front on economic issues, but Bush stands to gain more by advancing joint solutions in order to claim some of the credit if things improve next year.

Obama's subtle jab on Sunday suggests that he will smartly preserve the option to blame Bush for not doing enough during the transition and before. That might be handy once Obama takes power - and responsibility.

    5. In our time of great national crisis, Tom Brokow asks the BIG questions: have you quit smoking? AND will you (gasp!) smoke in the White House? (I'd bet my life Laura Bush lit up a few these past eight years.)

      Shoot me right now.

If having the occasional cigarette helps this President through these monumental decisions -- I say hand that man a Marlboro.

      CBob,
I get an education just by going back and reading your late night posts and links. That mass transit story surprised me because I hadn't heard it before, even though it should be predictable in a failing economy. Regardless, the numbers were staggering. For instance, that 11 billion fewermiles this last September than the previous September. It'll be interesting to see if the changes really do boost support for more transit funds in the economic stimulus package

On your other link, the recycling numbers being down is pretty well known, but I didn't realize it's never gone from good to bad so fast anytime in the past. Also didn't know the L.A. Times was thinking about filing bankruptcy. I guess is just all part of the picture.

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | December 8, 2008 7:31 AM

    13. Yes -- the suddenness with which recycling has taken this hit is mind boggling....

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | December 8, 2008 7:33 AM

    15. Yes Patsi. But the other half of the equation was the price of buying all of those things went back down too. It helped some and hurt the guys that make their living recycling a lot.

    16. In the meantime, on MoJo -- David Gregory was being beamed in from Washington, and was giving what appeared to be a thoughtful and heartfelt tribute to Russert and Brokow...and right in the middle of it, Mika chirped in with "Oh, look who's here!" giggle, giggle...Brokow had walked into the studio...and so, she then started talking to Brokow leaving Gregory stammering in the middle of his own thanks to his predecessors. Then she just cut him off and switched to Brokow. I switched back to C-Span.

    17. Everybody is worried about the costs of healthcare, yet our president-to-be smokes? Doesn't he wanna be around when his girls get older? Isn't Obama a role model? Will kids see Obama smoke and think it's cool? Kudos to Brokaw for calling Obama out on this.

    21. Chloe -- You are so right. I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but in '69 and '70, when we were in Germany, I was always astonished at how little trash my German friends had, compared to ours. After taking a hard look at it -- I understood that it was because, even though we lived off-base, we shopped a great deal at the base commissary, and American-style packaging was the culprit.

      Patsi, you are so right.
Speaking of mind boggling. The amount of trash we put out every week is beyond belief. And we've all read the stories of how the packaging of our products cost more than the product itself. That's something that would be a good project to start changing. It would lower our prices and also have an ecological benefit.

    27. Obama never did say he had completely quit. And to Brokow he said he'd fallen off the wagon from time to time. I do NOT want a president who is chewing his nails wanting a cigarette....

But if you are going to question smoking, better find out what foods he's eating. In the past few weeks I've had two friends in for by-pass surgery and one friend die of a heart attack. None were smokers -- all ate fatty foods.

Moreover, if we talk about role models, what about serving liquor in the White House?

Patsi, I didn't ask that question for any other reason than his being a good role model was being questioned. But I've never seen him smoke in public, and I doubt he smokes in front of his family. I could care less what he does in private. He's a smart guy, and I'm sure he's weighing his options on even that. Smoking, not smoking, his business.

As long as I don't have to breathe it...

And remember gum and the patch work 7% of the time. If Obama has quit by using gum, congrats to him. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Dem leadership - what the hell is that? Nancy and Harry should have been all over the financial bailout with at least halfway rational conditions on the funds - something a little tighter than whatever Hank says is OK with us - and should have STFU about auto execs flying into DC on their private planes. At umpty ump million $$$ per year, you want them wasting time stuck in airports or driving hybrids to DC from Michigan instead of working on plans to salvage at least part of the backbone of heavy manufacturing in the US? Give them the GD loans already - and give them bigger ones if the first round doesn't go far enough. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

As for Obama - he ain't in office yet - he has to sit and watch Bush and Hank continue to F**K it up, but why should he do that silently?

I hope Gregory grows a pair - he'll need them if he doesn't want MTP to lose what cache it still has.

      Corey, LOL.

When we were in Mexico 2 weeks ago, there was a Maxim photo shoot going on at Xel-Ha while we were there for the day. About 8 models, mostly thongs, legs and boobs - and our 12 yr. old and his buddy were tripping over their tongues, as you might guess, making excuses for going past where they were sunning (as if we couldn't figure that out). We left the park at the same time they did, and when we were walking out to the parking lot, about half of them lit up. LP's buddy said "Damn, they smoke." It matters to some kids. Of course a couple more years of puberty should get them over that.

    69. "f having the occasional cigarette helps this President through these monumental decisions -- I say hand that man a Marlboro."

Patsi, I'll put it in a military context.

Here we are in the windowless, underground War Room. The battle staff is convened and discussing the merits of staying conventional or going nuclear. Nobody, other than the CinC, has smoked in years.

Guess whose mind is starting to fixate on the need for nicotine. Guess who really needs a cigarette before making a series of key decisions. Guess who the Battle Staff is waiting on.

Is it time to light-up in the War Room. Everyone else will be gagging instantly. Or should he exit himself and go to points unknown and do the deed.

I listened to MTP. Essentially, Mr Obama blamed the stress of the campaign for not breaking his habit. He has not yet begun to see what stress is.

The way I look at it, he has about six weeks to get rid of the habit (including nicorette) completely. He will be much happier, will have reduced the potential for having a stroke, and will be able to give his undivided attention to the work of the country.

BTW, I was surprised when he called the White House the Peoples' House.

I'm told that smoking helps the brain to concentrate. I wouldn't know , I've never smoked. But several people I know have told me that one of the things they missed after they quit was the ability to set back light up and think about the problem at hand.

So If I was in the room I would control my gag reflex, reach into my pocket for the lighter and offer him a light.
It is his decision that is important, not his smoking.

Yep, when the good senators start thinking that how the CEOs got to DC is more important than what they did to get the big three in to the fix xthey are in and what they plan to do to get them out, I'd say their priorities are a bit skewed. Maybe the senators should all be required to sleep in the Holiday Inn Express before they go to hearings that end up on C-Span.

Yeah, Patsi, me, too - only I never took it up. Mom & Dad smoked - Dad quit when he developed a bleeding ulcer and the doc told him to cut it the hell out. Mom is probably directly responsible for my aversion to it. I hate smoking, but I have been known to tolerate it in a few women I've known over the years. :-) But I am one of those hereditary cholesterol timebombs. I don't eat a lot of fat or red meat, but my overall level is pretty high anyway. I'd have to go vegan to lower it sgnificantly - and I doubt that's going to happen today.

It all worked out for David Gregory, all his bantering with Scott McClellan at the press conferences...I am not accusing Gregory of campaigning to the MTP gig...who know Tim Russert was near-death?
But I am not at all happy with Gregory getting the job. I have been blogging for months on how Chuck Todd should have been tapped for Sunday mornings.
It was no surprise, though...all hints made it obvious these past weeks since November 4 that NBC had decided to give it to Gregory.
I just happen to think Gregory is better-suited for the Today Show , clowning with Al Roker. Chuck Todd was better suited for MTP. So I guess I find another cause to champion, as Todd remains the numbers cruncher and Gregory's star ascends the skies.

Ford has a lot of cash and will move out of the crisis in better shape than the the other Big Three giants. Alan Mulally stays.
Robert Nardelli has only been honcho at Chrysler for about 16 months, and Chrysler still has the reputation of not being able to conquer the quality-gremlins. I mean, the styling is terrific, but why do the axles break and the cars won’t start sometimes? New cars. Who knows how the shareholders really feel about Nardelli? Has he had enough time to make his impact yet?

Heredity is a bitch, Pogo....you never know when your genes will turn on you. Strangely, three of the healthiest people I've ever known -- no smoking, little or no drinking, little or no no bad food -- all died fairly young -- under fifty. All of obscure cancers.

In talking with the families of a couple of them, I realized that a LOT of the family had died young of cancer. So -- truth is, if they hadn't taken care of themselves, they might have bought the farm in their thirties....

    116. jamie - I may indeed have one of those other problems - only no doc's ever told me I do so I go on, blissfully ignorant and happier as a result.

Luckily, aside from having 12 year old smart ass syndrome, LP doesn't seem affected by any of the stuff kids used to have but go undiagnosed with. (12yosas has been known for centuries, of course).

The chemical soup is definitely not a good thing for the kids, but I'm one of those folks who's skeptical about at least a bit of the reported rise in those problems and attributing the rise to chemicals in the environment. They may contribute, but the models that are used to tie observed problems to known environmental toxins are very weak. And it's a lot easier to find something if you set out looking for it. I've seen enough kids who are just little shits who have been diagnosed ADHD and given meds when they aren't any different than some of their friends who haven't been diagnosed, labeled, medicated, tagged and released back into the schools. I've also seen kids the meds have helped who wouldn't have gotten them 30 years ago, so it's a mixed bag IMHO. Dyslexia has emerged as a subset of what they used to call LD, and I believe that it was a common but unrecognized problem that most people who were victims of learned coping skills on their own or just underacheived. I'm convinced my best friend from HS & college was an undiagnosed dyslexic. I'm sure some were called MR or borderline when in fact they were not (friend was not - he was bright as hell). The coping strategies and learning skills that have been developed to overcome the issue in its various forms have helped lots of kids, I'm sure. Obviously autism, Tourette's syndrome, cerebral palsy are different matters, and I have no idea what the numbers are for them over about the past 50 years.

Now if they can just find the cause for 12yosas (other than surviving beyond the 12th birthday) and a cure other than killing the little bastards.

George parked his car on the street in front of Nashville's Spence Manor one afternoon in the late '70s. He stumbled out of the car and headed into the Spence. He left the car door wide open, and the great singer/songwriter Mickey Newbury was walking along, so he stopped to close it. When he got up to it, he noticed a grocery size paper sack had fallen off the seat and money was falling out. Mickey grabbed it all up together and went into the Spence after Jones. When he found him, Jones said, "Oh, yeah -- I'm runnin' short so Waylon gave me some walkin' around money."

Newbury said there was probably thirty or forty thousand dollars in the bag.

Impressive credentials. SFW? Never happened in the past, so that's what we in the legal field call speculation. The Court doesn't consider the case to have sufficient merit for them to take the matter up now, and I wouldn't bet they'll see more merit later. And it won't likely go back down to or come back up from state courts. Berg's case has less chance of success. I'd find a new windmill.

I worked extensively on that application and it includes a more solid brief and a less treacherous lower Court procedural history.

After six days, it’s interesting that Scalia neither denied it nor referred it to the full Court.

On the chance that SCOTUS was looking at both my case and Cort’s case, I must stress that Cort’s case does not have the same procedural hang up that mine does. It may be that without a decision on the Judicial misconduct allegation correcting the NJ Appellate Division case file, SCOTUS might have been in the position of not being able to hear my case as it would appear that my case was not before them on the proper procedural grounds."

    173. jax, you would be correct - the high court of a state would ordinarily have the last word about that state's election laws, assuming there is no federal question. Here. in order to get to the SCOTUS, the argument has to be that the state's election laws, as applied, violate the U.S. Constitution by allowing the election in their primary of a person unqualified under the USC of serving as president, raising a federal question that gives the federal Courts jurisdiction to hear the matter IF the federal courts agree with that argument. The real problem is what remedy could be granted in such a suit. The federal courts have no authority to re-write the laws of the states, so what would result from a successful suit is really up in the air. Normally an offending law is struck down and the states then have to re-write their laws in an effort to comply with the U.S. Constitution. That can take several iterations, and different mechanisms have been developed - largely evidenced in the bussing cases - to deal with such problems.

"... the latest runaround in the judicial flim-flam of “who lacks ‘standing’ to demand production of Barack Obama’s original Hawaiian birth certificate (if one actually exists)” has just taken place. According to a newspaper report, Hawaiian Judge Bert Ayabe has dismissed a suit filed by one Andy Martin, on the ground that Martin “does not have a direct and tangible interest in the vital statistic records being sought, namely the birth certificate of President Obama.

Perhaps one may gauge the circumspection and even-handedness with which Ayabe approached the case by recalling that Barack Obama is not yet “the President of the United States,” ... So Ayabe’s decision exhibits a rather strong undercurrent of question-begging and special pleading."

      http://www.newswithviews.com/Vieira/edwin186.htm

      Posted by: GORDO | December 8, 2008 2:33 PM

    178. They don't have an interest likely because they don't believe that the plaintiffs in any of the cases can prevail based upon the evidence they can bring to the court. It's really a complex matter to bring a fully developed record before the court - which is normally done through the trial court discovery and evidence process. That has not happened in these cases, so the record is not fleshed out. The Supreme Court does not care what the lawyers think are valid facts - and they will not try a case as a trial court, making determinations of what documents are authentic or are admissible, what testimony is or is not hearsay or subject to exceptions to the hearsay rule and the like. Whether in state or federal court, that is done at the trial court level by magistrates and judges or special evidence commissioners that do that sort of thing routinely.

Here's a question for people to ponder - if Obama was born in Hawaii - or at least claims to have be, which has been confirmed by Hawaiian officials, and the birth certificate that could be dispositive of that issue is in the hands of Hawaiian officials, why has no one (no lawyer at least) brought suit against Obama and Hawaii in Hawaii, which is the only state jurisdiction (full faith and credit and all that jazz) that can compel the production of the original? And if not in HI state court, why not Federal District court of HI? After all, he was nominated in their primary and is no less ineligible to serve in one jurisdiction or another in which he won the primary. I could tell you the answer, but let's see who gets the answer correct first.

The standard for an administrative agency’s action – rational basis (or whatever analog the state in question uses for this lowest of all standards of proof for decisions) – is so low that suits are seldom successful and no one really thinks there is no rational basis for believing that Obama was born in Hawaii.

The law firm may also be sanctioned, or even held in contempt.."

Lamar Hunt was so tight with a dollar that rather than buy new uniforms he changed the name of the team.

      Hey Chloe
Thanks so much for that Politico link! It was such a good read.I love reading all those nice things about Hillary.I was at Super Walmart this afternoon and Tamika a young woman checked me out,I hadn't seen her since the primaries and we talked politics.I laughed as she said "Hillary is my girl". Tamika told me she cried when Hillary lost out on the nomination.I told her I had many tears regarding Hillary also and how Wonderful it is she's going to be Sec of State.Tamika also said it took her a long time to back Obama and she told me that her being black made it so rough on her,but she said she stood her ground cause "Hillary is my girl".HA HA, love her!!!

    287. Obama: Don't stock up on guns
"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," Obama said at a news conference. "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven't indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word."

But National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said it's not Obama's words — but his legislative track record — that has gun-buyers flocking to the stores."

That WSJ had a good graphic. It looks like there are enough auto plants in Republican states to override a filibuster. That means this is all about Bush. It looks like an absolutely horrible solution for the Auto industry. Ford is in the best position as they may not need the funds and can eventually tell the government to take a hike. But they will also benefit from any union deal done by the other two.

    295. "Gun collectors and speculators."

I didn't think about that Jack, for some reason. The first thing I thought of was oh, maybe there's going to be a shortage of guns. If others think the same thing, then that story will probably cause even more people to run out and buy guns. What Bow said about that guy buying $400 worth of Ammo surprised me. I don't know anything about the price of ammunition, but that sure sounds like a lot. I still think it's kinda bizarre that this is happening.

      See you tomorrow.

It depends on the ammo and how you shoot it. A thirty round clip and a fast finger can shoot a lot of ammo.

Where as my 30-30 lever action is a bunch slower.
I haven't even shot it in 4 or 5 years and bought ammo for it in even longer.
About all I've shot through it is 3or 4 rounds to sight it in , and one to get the deer. At that rate a box of 20 lasts a long while. So it has been so long that I don't even know the price of ammo.

    314. A question for chefs:

I have a new recipe for apple pie. It starts with 7 cups of sliced apples with brown sugar added, some flavorings, and tapioca flour, a little lemon juice and 2 tbsp of brandy.

The first time I made it I had no tapioca flour so faked it and used some regular flour. I don't remember how I juggled the amount of regular flour, but I did. It turned out great, according to the tasters. Me, I cannot abide brandy so ate none.

The next two times I had the tapioca flour and used the correct amount. By the time I added the brandy the mix was really runny, way too much liquid. The pies were not the hit the first one was.

I have never even heard of tapioca flour but it seems to not have much body. I also wondr about the brown sugar - it sucks so much juice out of apples that I wonder if it would help if I didn't really mix that in.

      Any reactions from anybody?
