Obama Cabinet Takes Shape

| | Comments (161)

Short on Southerners and with fewer Republicans than first advertised, Barack Obama's Cabinet is mostly picked and likely to give him a reasonably good start at governing from the center. If anything, liberals have reason to worry that his choices suggest less change than the rhetoric of his campaign had indicated. Or perhaps now that he has assembled a fairly conventional roster, his intention is to use them as protection for governing from the left. Time will tell.

    22. Winter Solstice at Newgrange
      Thursday December 18, 2008

© Paul Gill One of the most popular spots in the world for the Winter Solstice is Newgrange, where a prehistoric passage was apparently designed specifically to provide natural illumination to the passage at the winter solstice. This phenomenon was re-discovered only as late as 1967 by Professor O'Kelly, according to the Newgrange Solstice Webcast. From a small entry way, for a few minutes each year (with luck), a pitch black tomb is illuminated. The tour guides say it's bright enough to read a book -- but only if it's a sunny morning. Read more about my Visit to Newgrange.

Posted by: rosiethecat Author Profile Page | December 18, 2008 11:33 AM

    41. I would favor a bail out based on a GM Chrysler merger rather than bankruptcy. If the government did nothing but take over the health care for the auto industry and the small businesses that supply them, American cars would be totally competitive with the foreign companies. At least it would a start towards universal coverage.

Bankruptcy is just too darn destructive and this nation needs to support a mnufacturing base.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | December 18, 2008 11:41 AM

    42. I don't think that bankruptcy reorganization will be as bad as its been portrayed. Many large companies successfully come out of bankruptcy and prosper. I don't have an issue buying a car from one of the companies while they are in bankruptcy reorganization....I will buy 1 - 2 vehicles from one of them this next year.....it'll probably be from the one that takes the least gov't assistance.....

The problem with bankruptcy for the auto companies is the myriad small suppliers that would probably go under during the process. These are companies that work on very small profit margins. Any reduction in settlement of claims could destroy them. The damage would be spread nation wide.

The Unions have already made major concessions and the biggest problem is the legacy costs of retirement and medical care. Once you have changes in types of autos and the problem is solved with little disruption of the supply lines.

    47. Jamie,
Bankruptcy doesn't necessarily stiff the small supplier. In fact it frees up the major corporation from alot of covenants that restrict cash flow.

It's likely that the small suppliers need to keep running in order for the major to survive. They will be taken care of first. They need to function as ongoing concerns in order for the major to continue operations while it conducts it reorganiztion.

There are many — too many — examples of what has been going on with the Misogynist-in-Chief for some time. The handwriting has been on the proverbial wall. 49. Anyone, what am I missing?

I recall last year as oil (gas) started rising to it's record price, so too did most other consumer products especially commodities and grocery items. Most everyone said the rise in prices (groceries) were related to the rise in the cost of shipping. Now, since oil(gas) is down to 5 years lows, would not the cost of shipping be down? i haven't noticed our grocery bill dropping one iota/centavo. Is it just a delay in time for costs to filter down maybe?

      TIA

    50. GORDO,

There's been no betrayal. Failure to walk in a parade is hardly a crime against humanity. Talking with Rick Warren is not betrayal any more than talking to Achmedinajad or that Ayers guy is betrayal.

Jesus hung out with (re)publicans and thieves. Nathan Hale chummed with the redcoats. Schindler partied with the ss. Babe Ruth played for the Red Sox. So, Obama can talk with Rick Warren.

There's no betrayal until there is an action, and so far, Obama has taken no action against gays. If you're waiting for a betrayal, you would be well advised to not hold your breath.

In part this is what I have been arguing for a week now,,,glad that you have finally come around----now for the 2nd part take a look at the abuse of Union leaders---and not necessarily the the big three Auto Unions ---but as Tony and I have said the trade Unions need to be looked at the way that they function---they actually stop growth in the small companies, with the strong arm tactics that they employ! If President Obama just keeps his promise on just this one thing ,,,,UH ---it will be enough--for me to look at him as a success??

    55. Our story opens at Cafe Bionda, a Chicago hangout for politicians and wise guys. There, Gov. Dead Meat sits alone at the back table, weeping, guzzling flagons of hot mulled wine. He stands, and begins to lament:

'Twas the night before Fitzmas and all through the house
The federals were listening for the sound of a mouse.
The wiretaps were hung by the chimneys with care
With sugarplum visions of the rats they would snare.
And I in my tracksuit with Patti in bed
With visions of "bleepin' gold" running through our heads,
When out on the lawn, there arose such a herald,
I knew in an instant it must be Fitzgerald.
For a second, I thought this must be in jest,
Then the telephone said, "You're under arrest."
I rushed to the window and what did appear?
A sled full of subpoenas pulled by eight tiny reindeer.
More rapid than Outfit bookies, the coursers they came
And Patrick did whistle, and call them by name.
"Now Rezko! Now Kelly! Now Amrish and Stu!
On Wyma! On Harris! On Rahm and Ata too!"
And with a winsome grand jury so lively and quick
Jimmy called Genson, 'cause I'm in the thick.
Then I drew in my head and was turning around
And there stood Fitzgerald, who made not a sound.
But with a wink of his eye and a twist of his head
He let me know that I had plenty to bleepin' dread.
He pointed his finger alongside his nose,
I told him, "Hang loose," but up the chimney he rose.
I started to spill because I am no tool,
But then Eddie and Jimmy said, "Shut up you fool!"
Then Patti awoke all sweetness and light,
"You're bleeping holding up that bleeping Cubs bleep,
      Right?"
Fitz sprang to his sleigh and the reindeer did bristle
While off in the distance, sang the jailhouse whistle.
I heard him exclaim to all within sight,
"Merry Fitzmas to all, except those I indict."

"Just a week or two ago, Obama also admitted he had no intention of changing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT). First, his transition team said they would wait to address DADT until later in 2009. Then, it was reported that it would not be addressed until 2010. The latest on DADT is that, because of the economy (which will be a convenient excuse for the majority of Obama’s broken promises, we imagine), it might not be addressed “in the first term”, as there is a lot to get to. What you aren’t reading between the lines is the fact that Obama never intended to get involved in DADT, .... If Obama is serious enough to go after Rick Warren, that means DADT will NOT be addressed in his administration period."

    62. SolarCrete,

You are correct, health and pension aid make Detroit competitive by price. However, Detroit left to its own obsolete devices would continue to be uncompetitive. Detroit needs to change from antiquated internal combustion engines to full E85 hybrids and plug-in E85 hybrids.

Besides, it makes no sense for the American taxpayer to bail out companies whose products emit the CO2 that threatens to destroy Manhattan, Cape Cod, much of SC, most of FL, and almost all of Louisiana. If we aren't going to make the Little 3 produce 21st century technology vehicles, we would be better off taking over the workers pension and health funds, and letting the superannuated beggers die off in January.

    64. Rez,
My truck rates are down on average 12% over the last 2 months. This almost exclusively due to fuel surcharge reductions. Although highway diesel hasn't dropped as much as the wholesale market it's still dropped significantly. If oil stays where it is right now I expect to see an elimination of fuel surcharge on my rates all together by the end of the 1st quarter.

I've not offered a reduction in base rates yet but I've not offered any increases either.

I was in Vancouver, BC for several weeks. My laptop expired while I was there , and I decided not to purchase another until I returned. To make it an adventure, I turned my primitive existence into a sentimental journey through computerless life as we knew it way back in the 20th century. It was sort of like becoming Amish or Satmar without the rekigious rigor. After all the practice at being prehistoric, I feel as though I could even try doing without indoor plumbing and the wheel for awhile. But, not without fire. I really need fire right now.

I'm in MN today, expecting to go to GA soon - but not soon enough ! If it weren't so gawdam cold here, it would actually be good to be back. I can't wait for Spring. Let it be NOW !!!

My cargoes are not consumer products but I can tell you that my clients are definitely paying less for transport. How long that cost component takes to reach a consumer is a good question. My guess is that the transport component makes up less that than the reduction in commodities in general. You'll see the effects of that soon I think. Probably after the holidays you'll see reductions on the store shelves.....just my guess

Its certainly a component but an even larger one was the decrease in traded foodstuff commodities. Wheat, corn, soy beans. Those have come off their highs almost as significantly and it will have an even alrger impact to the consumer.

I'm no expert but I think that COLA is heavily weighted based on historical increases and not that forward looking. I'd be surprised to see an actual 5.8% increase in cost of living for 2009.....might be one of those years when you do a little better than expected....

I'm only looking at a 2.0% COLA component on my planned salary increases for next year.

Like what some of the Mortgage company's are doing now ---they can lower the rate for refi, etc. but some just use a bait and switch they advertise t hat they can lock you in at a certain rate----and then when you are signing on the bottom line you are charged an additional 2% or more----most all people don't take an atty with them to a refi cos it is not demanded by law----they never learn do they,,,,the free market is the one I choose ,,,but have to find a way to make it fair,,,in some cases-??? don't know if I helped or just confused you more? So bottom lineis that,,,,yes you should see prices come down at the stores,,,but not by much,,,and not by all--IMO thanks Oh Rez ---Tony's market is still (and 2 other large stores) around today,,

    109. Potlatch cont.

      Potlatch cont

The Kwakiutl used to live in plank-house villages set close to the shore in the midst of cedar and fir rain forests. They fished and hunted along the island-studded sounds and fiords of Vancouver in huge dugout canoes. Always eager to attract traders, they made their villages conspicuous by erecting on the beach the carved tree trunks we erroneously call “totem poles”. The carvings on these poles symbolized the ancestral titles to which the chiefs of the village laid claim. A Kwakiutl chief was never content with the amount of respect he was getting from his own followers and from neighboring chiefs, He was always insecure about his status. True enough, the family titles to which he laid claim belonged to his ancestors. But there were other people who could trace descent from the same ancestors and who were entitled to vie with him for recognition as a chief. Every chief therefore felt the obligation to justify and validate his chiefly pretensions. The prescribed manner for doing this was to hod potlatches. Each potlatch was given by a host chief and his followers to a guest chief and his followers. The object of the potlatch was to show that the host chief was truly entitled to chiefly status and that he was more exalted that the guest chief . To prove this point, the host chief gave the rival chief and his followers quantities of valuable gifts. The guests would belittle what hey received and vow to hold a return potlatch at which their own chief would prove that he was greater that the former host by giving back even larger quantities of more valuable---(sounds like the 2 party system?) gifts.

Preparations for potlatch required the accumulation of fresh and dried fish, fish oil, berries, animal skins, blankets, and other valuables, On the appointed day, the guests paddled up to the host village and went into the chiefs house. There they gorged themselves on salmon and wild berries while dancers masked as beaver gods and thunderbirds entertained them. The host chief and his followers arranged in neat piles the wealth that was to be given away. The visitors stared at their host sullenly as he pranced up and down, boasting about how much he was about to give them. As he counted ou the boxes of fish oil, baskets full of berries, and piles of blankets, he commented derisively on the poverty of his rivals. Laden with gifts, the guests finally were free to paddle back to their own village. Stung to the quick, the guest chief and followers vowed to get even. This could only be achieved by inviting their rivals to a return potlatch and obliging them to accept even greater amounts of valuables than they had given away.Considering all the Kwakiutl villages as a single unit, potlatch stimulated a ceaseless flow of prestige and valuables moving in opposite directions. An ambitious chief and his followers had potlatch rivals in several different villages at once. Specialists in counting property kept track of what had to be done in each village in order to even the score. If a chief managed to get the better of his rivals in one place, he still had to confront his adversaries in another.

At the potlatch, the host chief would say things like, “I am the only great tree. Bring you counter of property that he may try in vain to count the property that is to be given away.” Then the ch
According to Ruth Benedict, potlatching was caused by the obsessive status hunger of the Kwakiutl chiefs. “ Judged by the standards of other cultures the speeches of their chiefs are unabashed megalomania, “ she wrote. “The object of all Kwakiutl enterprises was to show oneself superior to one's rivals.” In her opinion, the whole aboriginal economic system of the Pacific Northwest was “bent to the service of this obsession.”---Benedict was mistaken. The economic system of the Kwakiutl was not bent to the service of status rivalry; rather, status rivalry was “bent the the service of this obsession.” Benedict was mistaken, The economic systems of he Kuakiutl was not bent to the service of status rivalry, rather , status rivalry was bent to the service to the economic systems. All of the basic ingredients of the Kwakiutl giveaways, except for their destructive aspects, are present in primitive societies widely dispersed over different parts of the globe. Stripped down to its elementary core, the potlatch is a competitive feast , a nearly universal mechanism for assuring the production and distribution of wealth among peoples who have not yet fully acquired a ruling class.

Melanesia and New guinea present the best opportunity to study competitive feasting under relatively pristine conditions. Throughout this region, there are so -called big men who owe their superior status to the large number of feasts that each had sponsored during his lifetime. Each feast has to be preceded by an intensive effort on the part of an aspiring big man to accumulate the necessary wealth.

I've noticed how so many people have a different interpretation of the song, and I'm hoping you'll share your take on it. Thanks.

    111. Gordo,

You, everyone and especially your anti -Obama netter buds had months to ask and resolve those questions. And go to court if necessary. Why are you asking these question now, in the eleventh hour, after he won the Election. Are you guys that dense and inept. Sixty nine million voters and 365 Electors apparently were satisfied about Obama's history.

You're too late, quit whining. You missed the last show and there are no reruns on this one. I can't tell you what I was told the last time I was late to the last show and complaining. Do you think you're special. Sorry Charlie.

    116. Chloe,

I've never really analyzed it other than that it seems to be about the forbidden or terrible on several different layers. I read the article and there are elements that seem accurate. The Millers Tale, Alice in Wonderland, even the Wilie Nelson change to mirror is a nod to "Through The Looking Glass". One item that the article doesn't mention is the Neptune/Mermaid that I feel brings death at sea in as another influence.

Whether it is being too drunk, being a first time ever virgin, longing for what you can't have (I could get odd here with Dodgson's attraction to Alice Liddell) or death, they are all circumstances that could turn you a Whiter Shade of Pale

When combined with the Bach organ piece it takes you to church for weddings and funerals. The song pushes so many subconcious buttons that at some point it gets to almost everyone.

    117. Solar,

I'm ignorant of Northwest Tribal culture and traditions, but from all I've ever understood, Potlatch had a lot to do with humility and being humbled in public. Quite the opposite of what was suggested by the some anthropologists. Like I said I don't know but what I read.

Down in my turf and throughout the plains Indian cultures we have what is called "giveaway" in English. Heads of family on the occasion of death, "rites of passage" and special recognition give personal belongings to others. In some respects the more and grander the more prestigious for the family. Like everyone else, some family are more generous and some more tighter than others, even the ones who might be expected to be grand givers aren't necessarily. Generally those who are "supposed" to get something do and that's the important thing. It could something like a blanket , money or even personal items belonging to the deceased. I think many societies and cultures have similar customs.

BTW, what started this Potlatch line of posting? I must of missed something between Jesus and the Kwakiutls.:-)

      -binnyc

to belabor something as puma is quite archaic....it's past and gone......there are no puma.

if it is a foundation stone of your point of view then ok, have at it.....puma till the cows come back, but there's not much real point to it........

He used the legal system to keep his "hidden" past secret.

They don't know about his history -- documents are either sealed or missing. As for the Obot voters, heard some "man-on-the-street" interviews on Hannity's radio show today -- amazing lack of knowledge. Many believed Hillary was NY governor.

There are still many lawsuits in the pipeline. They will vastly increase in number as soon as SoetorObama does something official. Heard Edwin Vieira discuss this last night on a netcast. As I post this, I'm listening to a netcast about potential lawsuits against him. This issue is not going away. He is Constitutionally ineligible for the office of POTUS and he knows it.

Ok,,,but my intent is and was not to pick up an audience,,ever,,, just to reach some out there with the truth of history t hats all,, sorry that you see it as an attempt to usurping of this blog

,,,,,the last one that I will do is all political in nature,,,,and is in line with the reason that I joined TM in the first place,,,to reach some people (lurkers) Once again when Bethyboo and I were talking About the Invasion of Mexico by Pres. Polk---we shared some true History,,,,and I think that she said that she learned somethings (I believe that she is a teacher ),,,and I did as well, ,,,,the long posts are the only way to introduce subjects that are not understood,,but I guess they can be intrusive as well.

But once again--not looking for an argument here,,,,,but do you really think that I want to pick up an audience,,,,I wouldn't want that on my conscience---having pulled some one away from a controlled format,,just to make them my own---from what I have seen here most all are pretty independent thinking .

    133. Jamie, Thanks for sharing some interesting ideas.
You got me thinking about the Alice in Wonderland, and I checked out some information on that relationship. Then, as I was looking back at information on that book by Mike Butler, I noticed some of the other songs he includes in his book, and noticed one of them was Bring in the Clowns, and recalled how much I used to love that song. I was surprised at how many people have recorded it, but Judy Collins is still my favorite.

    147. So far I've heard commentators talking re outrage of gays and lesbians at the choice of Warren, but none from gays and lesbians. One woman from People for the American Way did show up and objected to Warren, and Hillary Rosen, whom I've liked all along, voiced objections.

If gays and lesbians are angry, I wish they would speak up loud and clear because I think they have good reason. Did Warren really say that homsexuality was akin to pedophilia? If so, that's so far beyond breath-taking, it's out of sight and he doesn't deserve to be given a spot of honor.

If I go along with gay marriage being banned, our constitution policing some sex practices, and the control of bodies circumscribed, well, my life would be much less stressful.

I have no part in these circumstances - I'm not gay, and have never been pregnant.

But I can't get past the idea of the meaness and self-righteousness and self-satisfaction that underlies the effrontery to make such decisions for other people. It's
a physical impossibility - I can't accept people being treated that way. It's wrong.

If gays and lesbians do not go on record at being outrraged at Obama's pick, they will risk making the issue one of the media just stirring up stuff.

Obama is building up a record of breaking his word, and I hope this is the end of it. But as I've said before, I'm quite willing to go along until....

    152. For all the good Saddleback Church does...and they do a lot of good...and it's hard for me to dislike Rick Warren for his great works and his personal Christ-like spartan lifestyle, I do not agree with his viewpoints, especially all the harm he does to young gays by his Neanderthal comments about homosexuality. Saddleback does great harm to young gays by confusing them with lies and more lies, horrible lies about their orientation regarding sexual being.
Obama is trying to invent a new Billy Graham, true, but in his own way, Warren does have a lot of honor anyway; Rick Warren should step away from the inauguration invocation gig, and Obama should ask a more liberal clergy head to invoke the swearing-in.
As Randi Rhodes said on radio today, he should also have Melissa Ethridge onstage making music, and Melissa's wife there too for support.

    153. Interesting bits of family history I learned today. My Mom's Uncle Edgar did some thorough reasearch of the family history of my Mom's side of the family. My Mom knew already knew this, but her Grandpa fought in the Spanish/American War. The cool info was that an ancestor of my Mom named "Peter Peavey" served under George Washington at Valley Forge.

    154. Corey - you are right - the video did make me feel better, but not enough.

I just saw part of Rachel Maddow on her show and stopped, because it was making me more upset.
Rachel sounded as if she was being very blunt - good for her.

Dexter, I find it difficult to grant any honor to Warren. I hate the thought of being confined, and when someone tries to confine others as to how they should live their lives, to force others to worship their god, that is the ultimate sin.

Warren states that being true to one's self is a sin when it comes to gays and lesbians. He sees that as a crime, implying that they know they are commiting a crime. He obviously sees homosexuality as chosen behaviour, and not natural, otherwise he coouldn't characterize it as a crime.

I doubt Warren will back out on his own, and I doubt Obama will change his mind. He's already ditched one preacher and will be afraid to ditch another. He has already widened the divide in this country, not closed it. Remind you of anybody, like maybe both Bushes?

Now you know why I try to keep my distance from arguments - they get me too upset. This one is so egregious and it caught me off guard, a one-two punch.
I will have trouble sleeping tonight.
