Barack Obama's inauguration is still weeks away, but already thousands of enterprising individuals are taking to the Web to connect people, plan parties and even make a quick buck off of the event. (Produced and reported by CQ's Andrew Satter)
North Greece's Treasure of Bronze Tools of the Early Bronze Age
The first typological analysis of the tools showed that all of these tools dated back at the mid-third millennium BCE. The artifacts have been counted of a total 110 bronze tools and there is an unknown number still trapped within the underwater aggregation. This is the greatest treasure of tools of Early Bronze Age that has so far discovered in Greece and neighboring Balkan countries and it is expected that a thorough study will light the history of metallurgy of that period.
New Poll up- What do you think about Colin Powell endorsing Barack Obama Democrat. My husband who spent 27 years in the U.S. Army, thinks Secretary of State Colin Powell ?Republican? is a phony. My husband identifies Independent as I do. I don’t know Joe Lieberman Democrat and he endorsed John McCain Republican…that didn’t help Joe with the Democrat Party…did Colin Powell help himself politically with either party? Is that what the endorsement was all about? Positioning himself on the winning side? American Politics is not for the Timid.
Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo is set to take is maiden flight in the next two weeks. The flight will be the first of dozens planned for the high-altitude craft, which could become the first privately-owned vehicle to carry tourists to the edge of space. .....................
Virgin Galactic has accumulated some $40 million in deposits from almost 300 interested space farers since the company began selling tickets in 2005.
For only $50,000 a night, you and up to 50 of your friends can stay at this beautiful property in Virginia with the proceeds going to Maestro Maazel's charity to benefit musical programs for children
The battered artefact became known as the "Antikythera mechanism", and it caused excitement and consternation. Until then, not one gearwheel, pointer or scale had been found from antiquity. Nor have any been found since; the Antikythera mechanism remains unique.
General Powell was horribly misused by Bush. I fault him for being a "good soldier" and doing what was asked of him at the UN even though it was against his better judgement. It was the point at which he should have resigned rather than departing later.
Quite simply, he is that endangered species, a Moderate Republican. A whole lot of them moved to Obama and they will stay with the Democrats as long as the far right tail wags the Republican elephant.
I'd like to know when Uncle Tom made the jump from hero to zero. Because in the book he was a hero. I would guess there's a very interesting story about just how that happened.
This site is interesting because it is a black forum and one of the first conversations is about blacks calling other blacks "Uncle Tom". Very interesting
Do you have Elizabeth Warren on your radar screen? She's the recently appointed chair of the congressional panel overseeing the various bailouts, and is brilliant. I heard her interviewed on Terry Gross last week, and for the first time in a long time I felt like grownups were actually in charge. Not to mention that she combines her quiet intellect and grasp of every aspect of this crisis with a down-to-earth manner and charm. She's like a cross between John Maynard Keynes and Mrs. Butterworth.
I caught her briefly the other night when CNN was mentioning that a number of Harvard alumni and educators were advising or staffing the Obama administration .... sort of a "brains are back in style in DC piece". I didn't get any farther than pulling her Harvard outline
And Here's the link to the Fresh Air interview with Warren. It's a great listen and an awesome primer on the mess we're in. Something to put on in the background while you're surfing around here.
Lampe - I'm disgusted with Powell, also, for other reasons than his endorsement of Obama. He fought to keep the military gay free and blew the peace process after the first gulf war - he knuckled under. He let w get away with too much.
I think it's difficult to see what the man believes in.
Oh I'm particularly impressed with her view of the middle class squeeze and even allowing for some waste, it now takes two incomes to barely stay even with one income in the past generation.
I was thinking the other day that my aunt and uncle had a pleasant 2br 1 1/2 bath and den home in LA that was nicely furnished, a car and motorcycle. Being a child I didn't really pay that much attention, but meals were generous. We went to a movie one night a week. They took nice skin diving vacations for a couple of weeks every year. My school was excellent.
It wasn't wealthy or unusual in any fashion. He was an electrical engineer and virtually everyone around us was a professional of some sort.
Today it would take an income of at least $100,000 a year to duplicate that life style and that amount is double the national mean.
I think that was capitalism's way of leveraging the feminist movement for darker purposes. Let's double the labor pool, pay people less, and make them work harder than ever and get less in return even on a combined income.
I know that. It upsets some people when I say we could only send the wormen to work once. The next stage is child labor. How many adult children are still living at home simply because of the cost of an education and the price of independence?
After that, we are back to the multi generational households of the last century with the unmarried aunts and uncles sharing the space.
That economic reality somehow gets lost in the debate. The progress spearheaded by the feminist movement was definitely a victory on the moral front, but for it to be a total victory for society it would have had to result in something like this:
1. Absolute equality and parity in the workplace between men and women (we're not there yet.)
2. The decision to enter the workforce as an either-or proposition for a married couple (ie., either the husband or the wife could choose to work for an income and let the other spouse contribute to family well-being in other ways) as opposed to a no-choice proposition (ie., we can't get by on just one income).
Anyway, enjoy the interview when you have time. It's well worth it.
Thank you Bethyboo: The only point I was trying to make was. I don't really know what Powell's real reason for voting Obama was. But, I felt he was a traitor. Just, like I'm sure there are millions of Democrats that feel the same way about Lieberman. I feel there was a lot of Blacks, who never cared for this country before, not even enough to have ever voted before, voted for Obama only for the color of his skin. I voted for HRC, because out of the two I felt she had more experience. When Obama supporters started making threats about any one who didn't vote for him, would be sorry because no Black would ever vote for HRC, for anything ever again. I was done. You can't take my vote, you can't buy my vote, and you can't threaten me . That is when I changed parties. I wish Obama nothing but the best. That being said, I am afraid that we have put our country into the hands of a man, with no experience, at the worst possible time. And, I don't like the way all these back room deals seem to be made out of Chicago. Wo does he owe what to? And when do they want paid?
Five will get you ten that Laura Bush and the twins voted for Obama, too.
Does that make them traitors, too? Or does it just mean the GOP was so morally and intellectually bankrupt that even the president's wife and daughters bailed. :)
Lampe, time will allow Gen Powell's record to be studied absent the emotions that people now feel. (In my eyes, he's a genuine patriot--go figure.)
But on the Uncle Tom thing. I know the man through our military service. He's no Uncle Tom. If anything, he's a person who has lead many others in embracing a post-racial way of life.
I caught L Warren on the Maddow show and they had a good back and forth. Warren seems like the real deal and as sharp as a tack, for a woman.. j/k Patsi.. lol
I think she makes Bernanke and Paulson look like the Katzenjammer kids. I hope she grabs each of them by an ear and drags them into the house to behave.
LL -
I have noticed Obama has picked a hell of a lot of women to join his administration.
Gen. Powell -
I'd rather ride in a helicopter with Gen. Powell than Sarah Palin.
What's got the fur up is the Gen. questioning the very roots of the right wing. He's asking if getting one's science info from talk radio is such a good thing. He said the right needs to stop shouting at the country, and the world.
Passing by & noticed discussions re: Prof. Elizabeth Warren.
She is well-known to those of us who represent debtors in bankruptcy proceedings---if you are interested--here are some of her writings. She is definitely a voice to pay attention to.
I feel the same way about Powell ----was he or wasn't he part of the Bush war machine---it is that simple too me----they whent after Sen, Clinton for her vote on the war----and cut her no slack -----Powell was the one that promoted the war at the UN meeting---how does he get a break cos he was duped and others aren't is just more politics-----but take it easy and don't let it hurt you---but if that is what you want to do,and won't harm you---let her rip----
Maybe it's cuz I'm white but the term 'uncle tom' has no relevance to me. I would never think of any black person as being one - each is an individual who needs to be true to self, not the rest of the group. That goes for everyone - but I do understand why the term exists.
I don't think Powell is a traitor to repubs, either. I just think that some of the things he has said and done cause me to lose some respect for him. If I knew him well personally, I might change my mind.
I would also prefer to ride with him rather than Ms Palin in a helicopter, partly be cause I'd be tempted to push her out, and then I'd get in trouble - or she'd win the pushing contest! lol
With me is the pictures of dying soldiers---------he never said a word, to discourage the war,,,,and I haven't heard him all that much speaking out against it after he found out that he was misinformed ---some mistakes are more serious than others, but as t o what he wants to do now---I can't say cos he doesn't say so himself.?
What I like about the clip is there's a Rhodes Scholar asking great questions to a Harvard professor. The very thing the right has railed about for years. The very thing Sarha Palin warned us about.
Solar -
Powell is like Monica Goodling, they used them and then tossed them aside. When George W. Bush needed the Gen. stars, he used him then tossed him aside.
I had the good fortune to read Molly Ivins book about W. He's done this to everyone one he ever met. Palin has the same pathology. It's just her daddy didn't found Zappata Drilling.
Sturg----can't find anything wrong in what you said-----about Palin,,,don't like the way that she is so easily controlled,,,and that would lead to a lot of soldiers dying in another ill fought war IMO---but it was Powell that was used----he already had the expierence of past battles---and was considered a viable candidate for POTUS---he was a grown up that---was used ,,,,or went along for the ride,,,,,I just don't know
C-Bob thanks ---and your are right Im not that naive not to know that The Fikin Bushes don't do exactly that---but it still get me fired up to think that he---and by the way some of the other high brass General did not speak up----I guess that I can understand their point of view------but the men come first t me??thanks
What the hell is the matter with Rahm Emanuel? By not just saying something like this: "sure I had contact with the Illinois Governor in order to express the President-elect's desire for the appointment to his former Senate seat," he appears to be hiding something and this is not a good omen. Is Emanuel afraid of something? Did he go too far? Is he a part of the corrupt Chicago political machinery? If he has nothing to hide, he has no reason to make himself scarce. This is disturbing and it isn't helping the President-elect. Perhaps looking for a new CoS would be prudent at this time?
And the problem with your condescending attitude toward Lampe is that while I Know you are slobbering to call her a twit, you fear being called racist.
Lampe -- just say what you want to say. As far as I know we still have freedom of speech. For the time being.
was engaged to a girl named -Sue--got out of boot camp and she was married to someone else-----always gave an ex girl friend one night on the town,,,and remember is played this song a few times on the juke--
All I'm saying is that this is how I feel. Gov. Palin was on the campaign trail for less the 3 months. And, I don't have a problem with any one who has questions about her political beliefs. What I have a problem with is people who talk about her as a women, a wife and a mother. Questioning if Trig is her son, things like that. And also what I am saying is everything going on in our Country, right now deserves someone with not so shady friends , and more experience. If, you owned your own company, and you wanted to take time off, would you let someone take over control of that company, who has less than a couple years experience on how your business works. I am AA and just as proud as the next person, that we could see beyond the color of a persons skin. But, I am also a proud American, who only wants what is best for us. And, I sorry to say I don't feel that is Obama. Not, right now, maybe in a few years, after he has been aSenator, for a while and has written and passed some bills. Sorry if that offends any one, but, that is how I feel. And, being White some of you might not understand how it does feel to be called an Uncle Tom, or worse because you won't buckle down to pressure.
Light bulb moment, that Rachel interview with Elizabeth Warren was what made me look her up. Between those two heads ther was probably enough brain power to run the whole Federal government. If Molly were still alive, they could probably run the world.
That moon was unbelievable. I woke a couple of times during the night to look at it, and it did look lighter than I've ever seen it (at night). Glad CBob told us about it.
Solar-you ol' honey dripper, you.
Powell was being what he'd always been, a good soldier. But according to the Geneava Convention, that is no longer a viable defence. Unless of course you're from the good ol' US of A.
Thought I would try to get along with a Biruta Saldukis,,a French and German Teacher,,,,used to watch foreign movies with sub titles ----my favorite was beauty and the beast ---Russian style
than she broke my other heart ---getting low on hearts--damn
Woman. Wife. Mother. Whatever.
Give me a break. There are 60 million of those out there, and nobody's making them their running mate. And guess what, they don't get a Nieman Marcus shopping allowance, either.
I'm sick of this Sarah Palin crap.
Go watch the Elizabeth Warren links posted above.
That's a woman with a brain.
Why, Is It Okay, For You All To Hate Gov. Palin? But, when I blog about my dislike of Obama, some people on here seem to want to rip me a new ASSHOLE? You Gov. Palin Haters, don't have to listen to her or hear about her in the news, for the next 4 years. While I on the other hand, not only have to listen and see him,He will also be ruling our lives for that long.
Lard -- are you calling Lampe a moron simply because she is a black woman who doesn't like Obama and thinks Palin was treated unfairly? Or because she called what is said here equivalent to restaurant reviews.....
I actually think that's spot on.
Most restaurant reviewers have no credentials either.
LardassLiberal: If you have to stoop to calling people names, for simply asking a Question, then maybe you should grow the HELL-UP. I though this was a blog, where people freely expressed their view points. I may not agree with everything people say, on this Blog. But, I have never stooped to calling people names,
The fact is, there is no logical line that connects the very large, historical dot that is Hillary Clinton with the very small (microscopic?) dot that is Sarah Palin...and it's just disgusts me when people try to make that connection. It's totally ridiculous.
I honestly think people like Lampe are Rush Limbaugh cyber-plants, dispatched to sow doubt among the enemy...
My not liking Obama, has nothing to do with him being a man or Black. I don;t like him because of his shady friends, and his lack of experience. And, I never said Gov. Palin was as good as HRC. What I am pissed off about is the treatment of those two women, by the media, and others. Not one remark was made about Obama, Biden or McCain, being able to balance Fatherhood and their Jobs. But, remarks were made about Gov. Palin, should stay home with her children. No man was called a Nut-Cracker, Nor were their clothes talked about, or their hairdoos. Remarks were made about HRC, like men feel the need to cross their legs, when she enters a room, to protect their balls. And you people don't have a problem with any of this right? And no one questioned Obama, about if his daughters were really his.
"The fact is, there is no logical line that connects the very large, historical dot that is Hillary Clinton with the very small (microscopic?) dot that is Sarah Palin...and it's just disgusts me when people try to make that connection. It's totally ridiculous."
There is a straight line from "everybody's big butted know-it-all ex-wife" to "stupid slut in stilettos." If you don't get that then there's no need for the discussion.
Lampe, when you say "you people" please leave me out: I happen to agree with you that Palin was treated shabbily by some of the Democrats who say they're doing God's work in support of women's rights.
Anyone who supported Hillary Clinton (like I did) and who is somehow going to get their jones by supporting Sarah Palin in the future is doing nothing else but insulting the memory of Hillary Clinton.
FWIW (I know, which isn't much, coming from me), but I thought that what I read here was a fair, somewhat civil, even good, argument. Tempers flared, but everyone got to say what they felt. It was quite nice to follow, since something was accomplished. IMHO.
Saying Palin was treated poorly, and comparing the slights and shovenism to Hillary, is not the same as comparing the two women's qualifications. And defending Palin against mistreatment is not the same as saying she's qualified to be President. That's a real jump in logic.
Oh, I know. I just wondered why we are still talking about Palin anyway? I am beginning to wonder if there is now a "moral left" like there is a "moral right".
Lard -- why is talking about sexist treatment of Sarah Palin being equated to voting for her? My kind of feminism means you don't take gender based shots at women even when you disagree with them.
My feelings about this subject run very deep. When I was in the sixth grade, a girl I didn't particularly like put on some bright red lipstick just before afternoon recess. Our teacher made her stand up and turn to face the class. He called her "trampy" and said if any other trampy girls painted themselves up like that they'd be out of class.
At recess, I found her, borrowed her lipstick and painted my entire face with it.
Because of my family he could do nothing but fume that last hour.
That night my mother told me this: "You can have your father or me finish this. But you started it, and you need to think why you did, and how important it is to you...Mr. C___ is a stupid and vindictive man, and I think he's going to come after you for this."
She explained how he might make fun of me, grade my papers using different standards, many ways that I could be made "an example."
I opted to finish it myself, and did despite many, many disparaging comments those final couple of months of school.
I never regretted any of it, not for a minute. Don't expect me to apologize for defending Sarah Palin any time soon. I developed a thick skin very early.
In 1st grade, I was the only kid in class who stuck up for a girl who wet her pants at recess. I think we all have stories like that.
My only point is, why conflate all of this emotional stuff with discussions about who should be the president? It's a total disconnect. It's like voting against FDR in 1932 only because he looks like your ex-husband.
I said EXACTLY what I meant to say, and I think it made complete sense. I respect how you're defending Hillary. She's the only reason I ever showed up on this site. The pain of seeing how she was being treated.
But you don't need to embellish our thoughts with your ideas. What we say is what we mean. Nothing more. And it's not nice to accuse us of having ulterior motives.
I don't know that anybody has, but then again in my opinion Obama doesn't stack up against HRC at least not yet.
But get used to it Palin is the women's movement, with a conservative face. This ain't the 70's. Women all across the spectrum are taking charge of their lives. All of them expect to have a seat at the table and that is what the feminist movement was about IMO. Feminism does not = political correct liberalism.
If you want to compare her to someone use Laura Bush. Laura plays the traditional woman role.
Palin didn't get to where she was by being stupid nor a pawn of others. Can she play in the big leagues? Mixed reviews, she needs to work on her press skills , yet unlike slicker politicians who ran for president this year, She has built her self a national following and that should be recognised. Again IMO.
Hillary Clinton has been in the public spotlight for more than two decades now, has weathered shitstorms that Sarah Palin couldn't even begin to describe, and she is what she is, warts and all. Right now, she happens to be Secretary of State...in what many say is a job beneath her abilities.
Sarah Palin is a firecracker that just went off two seconds ago, and may just end up being a bunch of blown up paper in the driveway.
At this point, it's just ridiculous to compare the two. So I just don't get it. That's all.
"I wasn't accusing of you of any ulterior motives.
Sorry if you took it that way."
Oh come on Lard. That's exactly what you were doing. You were saying that if we want Palin treated fairly, that we wanted her to become President and run the country. You were making assumptions. Puleeeeze.
And when you say, sorry if you took it wrong, you're just laying it back on me. I like and respect you hugely Lard. But let's call it what it is.
I would say just getting to be governor of Alaska represents fair-enough treatment for Palin. And now, having been treated fairly, she should just go away.
I could list a dozen women in my own personal life who are smarter and more capable than her, but who have never received this much attention.
Don't make her such a martyr. She had a great ride, and loved every minute of it.
Haven't figured that one out, Lard. Not working out that well yet. I have tickets to next Saturday night's Red Wings game in Detroit against the L.A. Kings. Can't wait for that.
"My only point is, why conflate all of this emotional stuff with discussions about who should be the president? It's a total disconnect."
And my point is, we don't have to vote for someone to see when attacks are BS. You cannot say that the attacks on Palin were comparable to any taken at any other Republican candidate.
Sexism is so ingrained that it is no longer recognized much of the time.
You're still missing the point.
No one's making her a martyr. We're asking for equal treatment of all people, period. No ones asking that she be given public office. We're asking that she be treated as well as a male. He lack of qualifications is fair game. But what do they have to do with whether or not she's a woman.
Lard, you know that people don't go away despite how much we'd want some of them to. Look at Gov. Blagojevich...Kwame Kilpatrick....GWB...Well, Kilpatrick didn't go away as much as he got "put away".
Lard -- You still don't get it -- I never once compared Hillary Clinton's qualifications to Sarah Palin's. But what you are in effect saying is that racism towards Obama is terrible, but some black dude from the projects is open season. Call him anything you want. This is not about VOTING for Sarah Palin.
Take a step back: Do you remember David Letterman talking about Mitt Romney being "the guy in the deodorant ad" or "the guy in the picture frame you buy at Target"?
It's the same basic thing.
It's making fun of people who put themselves above others just because they are the politicians du jour. That's all.
For all her talk of being a humble "hockey mom", Sarah Palin put herself above everyone else and had absolutely no business doing that based on her qualifications. That's why everyone trashes her. It's not even CLOSE to the same thing as why everyone trashes Hillary. Everyone trashes Hillary because she's smarter than most of us.
Patsi, please...please...please...go upthread and click all the links that were posted on Elizabeth Warren.
Now, THAT's a person who is worth fighting for. Not Sarah Palin.
I mentioned this once before. A former plant manger of mine was supposed to read us a written statement that was given to him by the company management. He said, "They want me to read to you what they wrote, but I'm not gonna do that. I'm gonna tell you what they wanted me to say in my own words." He then took the sheet of paper he was supposed to read from and threw it on the ground. I thought, "That's cool. See? That guy really cares about us." A guy next to me said, "That was a bunch of crap. If management was here, he would have picked that paper right off of the floor as soon as he did that! What a big phony!"
One of the reasons that Obama is POTUS is cos center to right republicans voted for him,,,in pretty good numbers,,,,,,and that is cos bush is such a fuck up that they left him-----If Palin is chosen to run by the Republicans,,,,they will clean her up just like they did Obama----if you t hink tha she is dumb----than you underestimate her at your own peril,,,,,,I dislike her politics very much-----but she does have an apeal that comes thru,,,,you just might get what you wish for
Lard -- I bought Elizabeth's book about two parent families going broke (that she did with her daughter) back when my own daughter got pregnant....fascinating take on many aspects of today's families and economics...(my granddaughter is only three years old and I'm already worried about what it will take to put her through college.)
I keep beating myself on the head for not having made any money in my life. I keep thinking I should be able to put more than a few hundred bucks a year into the granddaughter's college fund. (But I think my-son-her-uncle is picking up my slack.)
Oh, Corey -- don't worry -- I can argue with Lard or almost anyone (except for a few specific cases) and not take it personal. In my house, if we didn't have a political argument at the dinner table, the meal was considered a failure....
It snowed last night. The cats went crazy, and I ended up in the middle of the night watching the Arar v Ashcroft presentation before the NY Court of Appeals (sometimes life is so exciting). Is anyone following this case?
They were bringing up all sorts of twists and turns re rendition, torture, extra territoriality, immigration and conspiracy.to bypass jurisdiction via security issues.
I was vaguely aware of the case from news reports, but some of the aspects could have long range impact on all immigration not just accused terrorism. I read the Wiki, but would appreciate some additional insight.
I would be interested in environmental impact as well. Here is an article on the TVG and the time for the same distance is close to taking a plane. If there were a way to have a high speed rail from coast to coast here rather than all those flights pouring carbon into the atmosphere, it would be an improvement.
"a high speed rail from coast to coast here rather than all those flights pouring carbon into the atmosphere"
jamie, i agree with you; but were it to be proposed there would be eco-arguments from many fringes. cbob has a saying something along the lines that there's good and there's good when it comes to eco choices...
My god, was it a full moon yesterday or something? Just reading the transcript I felt dirty. :-) Actually I felt like pouring myself a drink ... heheheh ... but seriously, the personal insults don't help, I know it, you know, we all do it or have done it, but there comes a point where you got to decide the bickering isn't worth it. Very few of us will change...

This is David Gregory's first Sunday as the host of NBC's long-running "Meet the Press," beginning what one of his rivals calls a new, post-Tim Russert era for the network Sunday public affairs shows. But some wonder if anything will really change.
you take your kid to the playground......any playground, any city......there's always this one kid who derives his own sense of well-being from how much torment and pain he can deliver to all the other children......taking their basketball and playing "keep-away" or forcing his way in line on the slide and then hogging it up at the top, or seeing some kid waiting for his turn on the swing he rushes over as the swing is vacated and commandeers the swing while laughing and taunting the kid who was waiting...... staying in the swing only until he sees the opportunity to stymie some other kid over the use of some other playground device.......
you've seen it......and there is no surcease from his behavior because he lives near the playground and is always encouraged to be there.......
and your kid still wants to go to the playground despite the possible drama of having to interact with this one fudge-brained lout of a kid......
so whaddya gonna do, eh?
I read my kid a story and made him go to bed last night........lol
Hey Sea
OMG,thanks for my Fudge, heavenly, and the peanut butter...WOW WOW.Beautiful packaging. Thanks also for your special hand written note to me.I think about the things you wrote to me all the time and feel lucky..Your sweet just like your chocolates..

Hey Sea
I wanted to make sure you have seen this post, thanks again!
While I can readily see the intent carried by your suggested wording change, I cannot in good faith countenance said change from "despite" to "because of" and will exercise my right of creative control in order to squash the aforesaid suggested change.......
But Lard -- debating a bit with you last night did me a favor. My ex called and said he and some of his MENSA crowd think Obama will prosecute Bush and Cheney....but since I was argued out, I only said, "Ain't gonna happen."
He did say that an environmental scientist in his group detailed some pretty chilling stuff Bush is busy doing right now....supposedly much worse than is being reported.
The NYT has the entire draft of the "Hard Lessons" report on its website. Looks like a pretty amazing, no-punches-pulled document. I'm just not sure if I have the heart to read it.
But his methods didn't die, certain things work.
One of them is change the subject to the thing that hurts the opposition. Don't debate jobs up north and the UAW. Find something that works in Tenn. and makes even his supporters wonder.
The question overhanging this sordid mess, you might agree, is, “How did such a specimen ever get elected?”
It’s as if a soldier, tested for his fitness as potential combat leader, passed his physical despite scurvy, pyorrhea, Jake leg, leprosy, the quinsy, contagious influenza and at least two trick knees. "

Well, if Saturn closes, Corker can take credit for the collapse of that part of the state. I think Harold carried Nashville....so Corker probably doesn't care about Spring Hill either.
I think I'll start the rumor that Corker wants to take away guns and tax grits.
Mismanagement in the Unions,,,could be part of the problem?
Absenteeism in the Auto industry runs about 10% annually,, --three times higher than other industries ----At some big three plants, as high as 20%-----it's hard to run an efficient business with these types of employees ??
Organized dis labor----we need the Unions as part of protection from the greedy ceo's -----sorry to get back on this subject but,,,,
but a successful biz also needs responsible employees------My idea would be to have a limit of non excusable days of not getting to work----get a group leader,,along with the rest of the workers to fire that worker(or just the group leader-an d employer)----then if the Union board wants that member to be given another chance---the group leader (or employer--my preference )and the employer can have that individual sign and agreement that he can not have another day of that is non excusable-( if he is fired ---if this employee is fired---your whole work force improves,, if they don't want to loose their jobs----not against Unions at all---hope that we all get UH so that the unions don't have to get so much money from the workers----they will not have to contribute that portion of the cost---since the Gov---will provide it---more $ in their pockets,,,just saying----

1987 Chrysler pleads no contest to selling driven vehicles as new
"All of this hemming and hawwing about the Big Three Bail-Out was fairly predictable. You just knew their next right-wing "talking points" would involve trying to blame the unions, for GM, Ford, and Chrysler's problems.
And sure enough, Senator Bob "isn't he a" Corker stepped forward to bloviate, O'Reilly-style, about how the unions need to give back more, before any auto bail-out.
Congratulations, Tennessee! Not since the "Road Kill Act" have we been as embarrassed as electing this kook has made us."

I don't know what to think, on one hand they are just another tribe trying to not get run over , and be lost to history. On the other, they have produced zero gains for their movement.
On one hand high speed mass transit is the future. On the other, I'm sure the valley the rail line is moving up has some secret of nature , that will be crushed under the tracks of a D-9 Cat.

Actually, this is just a small skirmish in the resource wars. This story is I'm afraid, the window on the future, as we fight over the last fish, the last drop of water, the last tree, the last foot of unbroken ground.
PC Magazine has performed follow-up tests of Google Chrome to see how much progress the browser has made since coming out of beta. The results show that its already fast JavaScript performance on the respected Sunspider benchmark has gotten even faster and compatibility with popular sites such as Facebook has improved.
The retest shows a 24 percent speed improvement, bringing this released browser to the same level of performance as Firefox's second beta 3.1 version. The new numbers far outstrip what Microsoft's Internet Explorer was capable of, by a factor of nearly 100, and even bested the released version of Firefox 3.0's results more than threefold.
You are one sick puppy---if it wasn't that I have known some gay's (including in the Marine Corps) and the ones that I have met here ---I would f-----in hate them----and it is very hard for me even to dislike anyone,,,,,,,I read what you told Corey last night you pathetic shit---if you don't like someone just skip that post,,,,like I skip yours---some of your posts are not avoidable but -as soon as I make up my mind not to interfere with the others that do try to have a conversation with you ( they should know better by now)---no matter how much I like that person,,,,I won't ----then---your just a bad memory,,,going right past you post,,,and anyone that talks to you--- they deserve it IMO

" We have gone, when Reagan came into office we were the largest exporter of manufactured goods and the largest importer of raw materials on the planet. And the largest creditor. More people owed us money than anybody else in the world. Now just twenty eight years later we're the largest importer of finished goods, manufactured goods, exporter of raw materials which is kind of the definition of a third world nation and we're the most in debt of any country in the world. This is the absolute consequence of Reaganomics. "
Solarcrete, Why is it always employees? Let's reduce the cost of malpractice insurance by making the AMA responsible for physicians actually being qualified to do their job, or the Chamber of Commerce and National Assn of Manufacturers responsible for business executives bad practices that gouge the public?
Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to enforce ethical behavior unless a lack of it crosses the line into illegality. Whether it is the guy with a lunch pail showing up to dig a ditch, a surgeon scrubbing up to enter the operating room, or a multimillionaire CEO sitting in a wood paneled office, all parties should be expected to do their jobs in such a way as to benefit society as a whole.
In 100% of agreement with your post----both of those things should be considered ----along with the whole Union package ----and improved-----not taken away ---but revisited so it makes some sense to what is going on now---in the present -----the past Union attitude has swung too much in favor of the Bosses ---while the workers are in the dark----they will go along cos they the benefits ------but they are still in the dark as to where all the $ really goes???
A surprise visit by US President George Bush to Iraq has been overshadowed by an incident in which two shoes were thrown at him during a news conference.
What would Gertrude Bell have made of all of this? She did foresee the outline of things to come. In late 1921, the increasingly powerful Americans were manoeuvring to sign their own treaty with the new Iraqi state: "Oil is the trouble, of course," she spat. "Detestable stuff!"
CB, it's gotten that I don't download new versions of Firefox for about two months after they're released--it takes that long for the myriad add-ons that I use to be updated. Despite that, it's my browser of choice.
I might install Chrome. I like Safari and use it when I run into a site that chokes on Firefox.
"There they sit in an atmosphere which reeks of antiquity," she wrote dismissively to her mother in early 1920, "and is so thick with the dust of ages that you can't see through it - nor can they."
The Gertrude Bell papers consist of about 1,600 detailed and lively letters to her parents, of her 16 diaries, which she kept while she was travelling, and of c.40 packets of miscellaneous items. There are also about 7000 photographs, taken by her c.1900-1918.
Jack---you and I have both seen that----the slacker is protected by the group----the only remedy is for the group to suffer the slackers time and $,,,,what I do is let them fight it out if they want to protect the slacker---then they have to pick up the slack----I have on pay day gave two checks to the slacker----one was for the work that I thought that he actually performed-----the other I tell him in front of the others is a present from his very good friends(wish I had some of those I say) needles to say the get the message------another consideration is the slackers interest of tools ---machines.,,,etc...and theft-----I take a portion from all of them,,,I won't hear any excuses----I put in my share for being just as careless(i tell them) and there are not missing tools this way-----not union like,,,,but very effective.
Bob, I just had an abortive experience with Chrome. It choked on my highly customized version of Firefox, importing virtually none of the settings. It didn't even find Google Mail nor any of the bookmarks.
For simplicity, I do like Safari--it is as bare-boned and nifty as the first sub-1.0 versions of Netscape.
It can't be one sided. Business success arises from fair treatment of the employees whose labor produces the wealth of the company. Without the ethical component on both sides of the equation, the business is eventually doomed to failure.
forgot to tell that in a small company----you can't afford the slacker ,,and union benefits---and intervention----loss o,,,and damage by these people shuts down a job,,,what follows is that you get fined for not performing according to the contract-------lot to think about when---you get a slacker?
Jamie----lets have fair treatment for all-------OK------can a small non Union company go to the government for a piece of the 700 Bil----for a bailout-------have the Unions thought about us little guys---how do Jamie want to help,,,or get some one to help----??????? call the all the Unions to chip ,,,,to help us-----cos that is what they are asking me and others to do----and I think that they should get bailed out---not cos they deserve it,,,,,but because of people like Corey and all the others that will loose out---don't worry too much about the Unions they will never loose out------they are just another arm of government now.

A week or so ago I bought Stinky a computer for her birthday. It's one of those new Netbook things. This one is made by MSI. It has a 10-inch screen and a 120-meg drive, and both wifi and ethernet. Since getting it, I've upped the RAM to 2-gigs and have ordered a Bluetooth dongle and a nine cell battery for it. I like it. The price was right--$300-bucks--$400 with the upgrades. I use MSI motherboards so I wasn't scared of that brand.
In any case, after working with a grandson-in-law in Korea, we got Google Talk working on our system and theirs. Excellent audio and video. Had hour and a half conversations yesterday and again today--nary a hitch. Stinky said that she felt as if she was right there with our family.
It's especially nice because her MSI can be used with absolutely no cables attached and can be carried to wherever she wants to be. Because her hearing isn't so good as it used to be, I did plug in a pair of nice Sennheiser earphones for her.
ScienceDaily (Dec. 14, 2008) — Massive swarms of stinging jellyfish and jellyfish-like animals are transforming many world-class fisheries and tourist destinations into veritable jellytoriums that are intermittently jammed with pulsating, gelatinous creatures. Areas that are currently particularly hard-hit by these squishy animals include Hawaii, the Gulf of Mexico, the east coast of the U.S., the Bering Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, Australia, the Black Sea and other European seas, the Sea of Japan, the North Sea and Namibia.
Just watching Korean TV. They had the showed the press conference in Baghdad with the shoes being thrown at Mr Bush. Where was Helen Thomas when we really needed her?

Bob -- I'm interested in what coasts these jelly fish are avoiding....and why....
As for abscences from work...each year we get 64 "bank hours". These are the amount of hours we are allowed to miss without an excuse (no doctor's note). Sick days or whatever. If we go over 64, we get fired. Some places have this at 40-45 hours and then they get fired. Yes, there are slackers at work. But, most departments make workers come in for overtime to make up for any work they did not get done the previous night. It's not a good thing to be on an assembly line and slack off, because you will cause everyone to have to work overtime because you slacked off. This will just get everyone pissed at you. As for quality, for many years the foreign auto makers have had very high quality standards. Companies like Toyota, Honda, Mercedes and BMW. They used to reject a lot of parts for various reasons. Over time, the big 3 have raised their quality standards. Ford places companies who send them bad parts in a warning status. Which basically means if you keep sending them bad parts, you won't get new business from them. When my plant got sold to Plastech last year, somebody asked the question, "Who does Plastech make parts for?" The answer was that 90% of their business was with the Big 3. Only 10% with foreign auto makers. The reason was the low quality of the parts they were sending to the automakers. When Plastech filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, Chrsyler asked for their tools back. They talked about how bad the quality of the parts Plastech made for them was. Plastech no longer owns us. We are back with our former owners. I'm sure that not as many people call in sick these days, because most cannot afford to. Many people also are afraid to quit working here, because there aren't any other manufacturing jobs out there right now. I have heard of a few people ratting on other employees in the past. It's not that extremely common, but it depends on what they've done. I know one young guy who was constantly coming in to work late on Saturdays. He told a friend at work, "I've been coming in late to work a lot, but I just don't scan my badge in the time clock. I just tell the supervisor I forgot to scan in and I fill out sheet and write down that I came in on time." Well, somebody overheard this guy and told the supervisor. He got fired for timecard fraud. This guy was working major overtime to help him afford to pay for his Mercedes convertible. When he got fired, he left work in tears. But, he should have realized that something like that was gonna make some person mad. A former boss of mine got fired for something similar. He and another guy were putting each other down for hours worked, when they weren't even working. They got caught and my former boss got fired. You can get away with certain things at work, but things like the things I mentioned will piss at least one person off.
You are a part of the whole food chain. If union workers don't have fair wages and benefits, they can't buy the products made by others. Societies are strongest with a broad middle class and very small percentages at the highest and lowest levels.
Government caters to those with power and money. Whether it is corporations who outsource jobs and shortchange employees or unions who leverage in such a way as to exceed what is profitable for the company, government minions will side with the source of the money rather than what is good for the whole of society.
The trick is to somehow make those in power no matter who they are to remember that the source of their real power is creating equitable conditions for all.
When factions are pitted against each other rather than working cooperatively, then the seeds of destruction have been sown for all
Jamie, our plant manager said at a meeting, "We can't compete with companies who only pay their workers $10 an hour." Last year, I interviewed with Kellogg's. The guy who interviewed me said, "We have to keep costs down to compete with Mexico." We import breakfast foods from Mexico??? The husband of a friend of mine works at GM in the Grand Rapids area. There are making about $31 an hour. Last year, they offered buyouts to workers and they were gonna hire new workers to replace them at a wage of about $15. However, they recently announced they are gonna close that plant. It's a union plant, but it's still gonna get closed. The union can't stop that. It's a sad state of the auto industry.
Well after six years, Bush still knows as little about the Middle East as he knew when this started. A reporter followed up the shoe throwing with a "what did you think about it" and in various forms he repied, "nothing it's just like being yelled at during a political gathering or seeing someone wave at you without using all five fingers". Oh well, Georgie never has been very big on cultural awareness.
The whole depth of disgust loaded in that shoe throwing didn't bypass the Iraqi govt official beside Bush if the expression on his face was any indication.
When the first reports came in from Mumbia one of the first by Richard Engel was that the cell phone system had gone down at the beginning of the attack, and came back-up . I'm still wondering if this was true, or just one of those things that get reported in the heat of an incident, and then don't pan out. One things for sure the terrorists were ready.

MUMBAI, India -- When the attackers arrived on the shores of Mumbai last month, they had studied satellite images of the city, were carrying handheld GPS sets and were communicating with their handlers via the Internet and satellite phone.
Many of the Indian police they encountered did not even have walkie-talkies.
M2Z Networks' proposal to build a free wireless broadband network is not the only controversial part of its business plan. Just as contentious is its intention to filter the content delivered over that network to block any material deemed inappropriate for children.
Jamie ---so its ok for me to be cannibalized.....for the good of the few---10% of all workers are union,,,so 90 % are dog food????---between the Union and the Corps----tell me where are the middle class,,,right now---today----it all sounds nice,,,,and reads well on paper,,,,,where have the middle class gone----or do you mean just the Union cos they are a Democrat-------voting machine???
The trick is to somehow make those in power no matter who they are to remember that the source of their real power is creating equitable conditions for a
And you can do this in a two party system----they just takes turns to squeeze out what they can ---it is not enough to say im a democrat and I care----and Im a republican and I care ----while all the proof is in front that they don't care...maybe it's time for a new way of thinking about how to help that middle class NO? thanks
Turnout in presidential elections hit 40-year high
This year's total is 61.6 percent of the nation's eligible voters, the highest turnout rate since 1968, when Republican Richard M. Nixon defeated Democrat Hubert Humphrey, said Michael McDonald, a political science professor at George Mason University.

I don't thing it's question of the jellyfish "avoiding" a place in the ocean. I think it's just that some parts of the oceans aren't sick enough for them to explode yet.
The oceans are in deeper trouble than we know. Too many stories like this one in the news .
that means that the Union heads could not protect what they had from the big bad Republicans------they should have been fired----I f im not mistaken at one time the total of 28-30% people were union ----thanks ,,,,I am not against Unions,,,for the last time----find out where the abuse comes from,,,not just the obvious------blame the Republicans is just an excuse to me----go after the ones that let them-----start with Carter like ET reported.
CNN's guy in Iraq just mentioned how dire an insult the shoes were and also brought up the anti US demonstration where shoes were thrown at a Bush effigy.
Shame it is wasted on someone so egocentric that he doesn't have a clue how much damage he has done.
jelly fish in gulf of mex
"....the dead zone is tampering with the Gulf food chain. The term scientists use to describe changes in the food chain is a "regime shift" in the oxygen-deprived waters.
The dead zone was first studied in the 1970s. Since then, the zone has grown and scientists warn it could threaten Gulf fisheries, where the largest fleet of fishermen in the Lower 48 states works......"What we're finding is that we see these regime shifts sometimes where instead of producing a normal food chain we wind up with just jellyfish,"
In recent years, the dead zone has gotten so big that it has stretched from the Texas coast to Mississippi." http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/nation/6161899.html
according to south carolina's dnr:
"Some species, including the mushroom and cannonball jellyfish, are even considered a delicacy by humans. Pickled or semi-dried mushroom jellyfish are consumed in large quantities in Asia, where they constitute a multimillion-dollar part of the seafood business."
why aren't we out there making millions and cleaning the place up at the same time?
pretty soon rigging and shoe leather are going to be considered a delicacy in many places........hungry dogs will eat dirty pudding.........many a slip twixt the cup and the lip.........
I've been 61 years living large on the bounty of the sea.....oysters, shrimp, fush, crab, conch, shark, scallop, clam and sting-ray.....and I've never seen any way that the jelly fush could be a "food product".

When David Attenborough did Blue Planet, years ago, one of the places he covered was the Skeleton Coast of Namibia. There the currents bring up the nutrients, and huge blooms of phytoplankton to proliferate. Then the sardines moved in the billions to feed on the blooms. The segment on this followed the dolphins coming to the coast to feed on the schools of sardines. Sail fish join the hunt, along with dozens of other creatures from birds to sharks. It was maybe the best part of the whole series, unbelievable in it's scope and size.
Then we stripped the sardines from the Skeleton Coast of Namibia.
Now, we have large scale eruptions Hydrogen Sulfide gas off the Skeleton Coast of Namibia.
Without the little sardines in their numbers the phytoplankton die and drift to the bottom, and decompose forming several gases one of which is Hydrogen Sulfide, which kills even more sea life as moves up the water column.

Milky, turquoise-colored “dead zones,” sometimes as large as New Jersey, of rotting fish and caustic stench floating off the coast of southwest Africa, may be a sign of things to come for other areas along the coastlines of the eastern Atlantic and Pacific oceans. http://www.futurepundit.com/archives/002481.html
Jellyfish recipe
1/2 shot white creme de cacao
1/2 shot amaretto almond liqueur
Bailey's® Irish cream
grenadine syrup
Pour the creme de cacao and amaretto into a shot glass. Float enough bailey's on top to cover the shot, and then drop a few drops of grenadine into it. It looks just like a jellyfish!

In answer to your question, on Dec-12,,,7:18 pm-( “where do early religions fit in this scenario?”) ---- Patsi-- this is only my belief after thinking about it.
In early primitive times and the awakening of the human brain---due to an enlarging of the brain that evolved ---due to eating of the protein that came from meat( and the way it was cooked---by fire) there began a new type of thinking,,other than just planning, and group hunting strategy's.
These hunters were the stronger of the two sexes (physical strength) and had more endurance, for the hunt that made it a male effort ---imagine the interdependence of one another,,,,the trust in each of these hunters so that they could live was, ultimate-----and also think of the day's weeks that they were together----Based on my experience, when I have worked together with a worker,,,for a long time---my son,,,my brothers, etc, etc, it follows that you bond with these people, and try to take care of each other----there for groups within groups (within-tribes ) are created,,,while the females (not getting the credit for what they do---they don't share the same life experience's exactly,,,except for a few,,,,, they only share them by the retelling of the life of a hunter??? they are taking care of the young ( a little cave dwelling solar,,haha-)—providing a home___a 50-50 partnership imo,,,but they don't risk their lives,,,as much,,,as when the hunters take on their deadly prey?
Patsi ,,you and I have talked about –energy—leaving the body of a loved one---who just passed,,while in our arms,,and saw the energy leave them,,,or felt something----I think that at some point in time one of these hunter leaders (they had the most brain power)--(Here is the passing of the genes of a past father that was on the verge of evolution?) and on the verge of a new evolving-- --thinking brain (thoughts) so after tending to a fallen father, brother, and or maybe a friend that he loved more than family---saw felt, the energy leave the body,,he was therefore,,very confused ,,,as to what had happened ,,,but something did happen,,and while trying to explain this to his tribe,,,(the beginning of religious power,,,it happened to him so he had the power of the sky?) he point to the heavens when telling everyone that it ( the energy ) rises to the heavens—stars---they as animals( all animals) wonder about the sky's ---no--well---a new power of control is born to an intelligent leader----why should he share with the females or any one else? But on the battle field and dying this is passed on to some other hunter leader---not in exact words but thru the connection of death?---if they both live at the same time ---well than it's the beginning of shared offices, Religion,,,and Politics (no such thing as seperation of church and state)
While the women are aware of something new—they are at a few years ( hundreds ?) disadvantage---power is in the hands of the males------they are always beaten, r apped, etc, etc, cos of power and greed,,,imo----the more brutal the males are , the more thy are feared by other tribes,,,,the females come to accept all of this violence as the norm---they know that they can control the male—female ratio that is born,,,but they need to raise strong boys that grow up and protect them from the other tribes---so in other words they need that asshole that beats t hem and this is still going on---not so much---but I also believe that with the death of all religions—all--it will end abuse---and it will happen(50-75 years??)----Hope this makes sense and won't get laughed at too much.---Power over people is what it is all about----and religious power is the worst---cos of the promise of living forever.----Oh-- don't ask me stuff like this again----my head hurts---my brain hasn't evolved all that much---in my best cave man ----Ugh Ugh or Ok
But I blame everything that is wrong in our world on religion (almost),,,,,too much proof not too.
If you think that this is all bull I don't want to hear it...cos I would have to start over ---maybe I should leave things like this for Anthropology.
the rape of the sabine women wasn't religion based. I mean they may have somehow used religion, but it was a loose cover for something quite different.....
look again at the athenians' ultimatum to the folks at melos and you get to the heart of most transgressions, and rapine pillaging...........

Terrific!! I gave some to my neighbor Karen, she called me up on the phone and told me" there's fudge and there's this fudge"!! Karen said its the best she has ever had,we both agreed we would be making another order for the both of us! Thanks....
i'll tell ya.......I have FOX news on............and those people are filthy with the cheese......they are distributing germs to the american people........it's ugly and filthy
Sturg thanks ---I will a refine my thinking----but originally this is about the savageness of males towards females----I will look at that info---in the ancient history site that you gave me perhaps?? and should I go on with this type of info? it looks a little bit on the old side of information ---but I found it very interesting ---not religion based ..but the savagenous of some tribes, towards women----?
Solar
I worked at the GM Truck and bus plant for 23yrs. and what your speaking of started in the early 90's.I as an assembly line worker was put through training as were my fellow workers,we were broken down into teams and we chose a team leader and those team leaders work directly with management. The team leader would report slackers as you call them and action would be taken. The worst problem was this person was put on penalty but real grievances would be traded by management and the union for these offenses.I could miss 40hrs. a year without a doctors statement and after that the penalties were steep!I still think looking at the bigger picture for me as a worker is the best approach, unions are so great for the workers, yes there are negatives but by and large they raise the bar for everyone in my opinion!
Solar -- I go back and forth between hunter/gatherer theories, early religion and of course, the emergance of so-called civilized society. Looking to the animal community complicated things fiurther....however, the bonding of the hunter is crucial. That's why support for girls team sports was so important.
thank--- you for that ---and Im sure that it true and accurate,,,and I have also belonged to a well run union place of work,,,,,,and where you work is a very good example of how they should all be run-----but not all unions are alike----there are a lot of favors done in the trades ( electric,,,plumbers etc concrete I know first hand) unions that go unseen by others----I hope the best for you,,and for your Union--not all Unions are alike that is all i'm saying,here----but I have never said that Unions are not good---Just the way some are administered ----
Solar
I agree with you wholeheartedly! I have heard many horror stories from people associated with some other unions.I don't know exactly how you fix these problems but agree things need to be done.
I truly ---APPRECIATE---that you took that in the spirit in which it was given-----I have said all along that I am not against unions just the management of them-----I wish that we all belonged to one,,,,
Patsi---yes I know!----I have based my thoughts on several different things---and one of them to me is ----when was the first time that this t ype of experience first happened ,,,unless we were just talking about ,,,in Abrahams time,,,and the begining of the 3 major religions,,,,but I guess like you said for another time and place
I would like your E-mail address if it is possible I will share mine a little later, when I get the ones that I want
-Sturg can I have your ---to forward any plans that might be coming out about those houses---there has been some good reports so far---another meeting on tuesday---they are weekly or once every two weeks now----good signs.
Electricity returned to my street Saturday PM. There are so many people up here still without power that they have canceled school in Nashua and other areas.
We lost power at my work 2:20 am friday, but kept our employees on site until the end of their shift at 6:00 am. Very bad driving conditions going home and not much improvement yet. There are trees down every where.
Last night I had less than half my shift show up for work, they needed to take care of their personal situations, which is what I expect and think is right. But we are coming out of it and things should get better in the next few days.
The problem that nobody wants to admit is that gender or race based language that demeans translates to earning power. Too many people scoff at that reality....
I consider Caribou Barbie a pretty gentle epithet for a woman who made constant rabble rousing speeches that encouraged the worst racist inclinations in her audiences during the last days of the campaign.
ETom - I'm in agreement with you re last night's posts, or most of them. As so often in the past, I couldn't see the reasons for the anger and name-calling. I didn't feel dirty after reading (but close) but shake my head.
Literally everybody here believes we all have a right to express our views and that our expressions should be respected. I just don't get the fury.
I have some comments to add to at least one of the hot spots, but will do you all the favor of holding off. If I bring it up now while the conversations are almost pleasant, the brouhaha will get going again. I reserve the right to stick in my 2 cents worth when someone else starts it up again.
Hey, didn't the number'sign keys have a sign for cents -
you know, a 'c' with a slash sign?
Did you hear about the very large woman who went into a ballet store and sai she wanted to buy a tutu?
They decided she was too big for a tutu, so had to sell
her a four-four.
But when personal computers began to appear in the late 1970s, the primary application driving their adoption was word processing. These new small computers used the ASCII standard—after all, that's what standards are for. By the millions, typewriter keyboards (with ¢) were traded in for Apple IIs and IBM PCs (without ¢). While it's true that the cent sign was ultimately made part of other larger encoding standards, and is possible to create at modern PCs with a little effort—the damage had been done. Without a cent key in front of them, writers of books, newspapers, magazines, and advertisements made do without. And over time, $0.19 began to look like the right way to say 19¢. In another few years the cent sign will look as alien as those strange S's our forefathers were using when they wrote the constitution.
Sorry Bethy on misspelling your name on last post.
Rosie - do you think that most of the reason Palin (sorry for bringing her up again) was elected was because we:
1) in the primary - did not want Murkowski and
2) in the general knew too much about and did not want Knowles?
LesAK - I couldn't figure out why you sent that post to me, but decided to check the link. WOW!
Fascinating. I really didn't expect an answer to my question, and never expected there was so much more to it. I had thought maybe it was due to inflation and the devalue of the penny, but this......
Entertaining to say the least. Everyone should read this so I'll re-post it.
I read Corey's posts about his job and I realize how happy I am I retired from a place with similar rules. It is a helluva thing to work in a place where management would rather you quit than continue to come to work. Good luck, Corey. We have a JC plant a mile from my house but I don't know anybody who works there.

Archimedes and the 2000-year-old computer
The battered artefact became known as the "Antikythera mechanism", and it caused excitement and consternation. Until then, not one gearwheel, pointer or scale had been found from antiquity. Nor have any been found since; the Antikythera mechanism remains unique.

Ree,
General Powell was horribly misused by Bush.

Hey Jamie...
Here's her Wiki.

Posted by: LardassLiberal
| December 13, 2008 3:50 PM
Lardo
I know that. It upsets some people when I say we could only send the wormen to work once. The next stage is child labor. How many adult children are still living at home simply because of the cost of an education and the price of independence?
After that, we are back to the multi generational households of the last century with the unmarried aunts and uncles sharing the space.
Posted by: Jamie
| December 13, 2008 3:57 PM

Posted by: Lampe | December 13, 2008 4:24 PM
Lampe...

I would also prefer to ride with him rather than Ms Palin in a helicopter, partly be cause I'd be tempted to push her out, and then I'd get in trouble - or she'd win the pushing contest! lol

It's more fun when people make fun of all politicians, not pick and choose.
Don Rickles was talking abiut Frank Sinatra to Conan O'Brien last night. He told him this:
"Frank was the kinda guy who always made you look good. You don't find that very much these days."
He looked directly at Conan when he said the 2nd part.

Saying Palin was treated poorly, and comparing the slights and shovenism to Hillary, is not the same as comparing the two women's qualifications. And defending Palin against mistreatment is not the same as saying she's qualified to be President. That's a real jump in logic.

Patsi,
In 1st grade, I was the only kid in class who stuck up for a girl who wet her pants at recess. I think we all have stories like that.
My only point is, why conflate all of this emotional stuff with discussions about who should be the president? It's a total disconnect. It's like voting against FDR in 1932 only because he looks like your ex-husband.

Putting words in my mouth.

"There is no comparison between the two"
I don't know that anybody has, but then again in my opinion Obama doesn't stack up against HRC at least not yet.

No one's making her a martyr. We're asking for equal treatment of all people, period. No ones asking that she be given public office. We're asking that she be treated as well as a male. He lack of qualifications is fair game. But what do they have to do with whether or not she's a woman.

If there were a way to have a high speed rail from coast to coast here rather than all those flights pouring carbon into the atmosphere, it would be an improvement.

you take your kid to the playground......any playground, any city......there's always this one kid who derives his own sense of well-being from how much torment and pain he can deliver to all the other children......taking their basketball and playing "keep-away" or forcing his way in line on the slide and then hogging it up at the top, or seeing some kid waiting for his turn on the swing he rushes over as the swing is vacated and commandeers the swing while laughing and taunting the kid who was waiting...... staying in the swing only until he sees the opportunity to stymie some other kid over the use of some other playground device.......
you've seen it......and there is no surcease from his behavior because he lives near the playground and is always encouraged to be there.......
and your kid still wants to go to the playground despite the possible drama of having to interact with this one fudge-brained lout of a kid......
so whaddya gonna do, eh?
I read my kid a story and made him go to bed last night........lol

What would Gertrude Bell have made of all of this? She did foresee the outline of things to come. In late 1921, the increasingly powerful Americans were manoeuvring to sign their own treaty with the new Iraqi state: "Oil is the trouble, of course," she spat. "Detestable stuff!"

Jack,
It can't be one sided. Business success arises from fair treatment of the employees whose labor produces the wealth of the company. Without the ethical component on both sides of the equation, the business is eventually doomed to failure.

When she's happy, I'm happy, too.

Solar,
You are a part of the whole food chain.

------------
MUMBAI, India -- When the attackers arrived on the shores of Mumbai last month, they had studied satellite images of the city, were carrying handheld GPS sets and were communicating with their handlers via the Internet and satellite phone.
Many of the Indian police they encountered did not even have walkie-talkies.

Free broadband plan stirs debate on filtering
By JOELLE TESSLER, AP Technology Writer
Sunday, December 14, 2008
(12-14) 13:23 PST WASHINGTON, (AP) --
M2Z Networks' proposal to build a free wireless broadband network is not the only controversial part of its business plan. Just as contentious is its intention to filter the content delivered over that network to block any material deemed inappropriate for children.
Free-speech advocates on the left and right have expressed alarm at M2Z's plans to build a family-friendly network that would weed out objectionable sites by blocking particular Internet domain names.

90% are not union because the unions already won the rights they now expect ... a 40 hour week, sick leave, vacation time etc.

jelly fish in gulf of mex

The worst problem was this person was put on penalty but real grievances would be traded by management and the union for these offenses.I could miss 40hrs. a year without a doctors statement and after that the penalties were steep!I still think looking at the bigger picture for me as a worker is the best approach, unions are so great for the workers, yes there are negatives but by and large they raise the bar for everyone in my opinion!

thank--- you for that ---and Im sure that it true and accurate,,,and I have also belonged to a well run union place of work,,,,,,and where you work is a very good example of how they should all be run-----but not all unions are alike----there are a lot of favors done in the trades ( electric,,,plumbers etc concrete I know first hand) unions that go unseen by others----I hope the best for you,,and for your Union--not all Unions are alike that is all i'm saying,here----but I have never said that Unions are not good---Just the way some are administered ----

Solar
I agree with you wholeheartedly! I have heard many horror stories from people associated with some other unions.I don't know exactly how you fix these problems but agree things need to be done.

Rez,
Electricity returned to my street Saturday PM.

Shoes are important in politics.
Bush & Iraq = da shoe
C-Bob, yes a perfect bookend.
Iraq gave Bush da shoe on da way out.
That shoe came from millions + the guy who threw them.
The BIG question:
Will reporters be allowed to wear their shoes at press conferences now?
The history of shoes:
Kruschev pounds one on the table.
Richard Reed couldn't set his on fire and caused the entire airplane flying populace of the US to remove theirs. (I hate that guy!)
Man throws one at Bush.
I watched the whole speech on C-SPAN. Bush is delusional. He smiled at the strangest times during his 'speech'. No wonder someone threw a shoe at him.
After the 'event', he said it didn't bother him at all like he's used to that kind of behavior. Maybe his mother used to throw stuff at him?
There's a long part where he's just staring into space reminiscent of the My Pet Goat stare.
Truly a strange person, he is.

Betty, from the source noted at bottom of text.

That shoe attack was bizarre! He got both shoes off and thrown before people jumped the attacker. I suppose they'll hang the attacker by the neck until dead, right?
