My CQ Politics blogger pal Jeff Stein floats an interesting idea for CIA chief -- Bill Bradley. Noting that Barack Obama is facing some difficulty finding a qualified candidate who is not tied, even if remotely, to the agency's post-9/11 torture policy, Stein raises Bradley as a prospect based upon his well-regarded work on the Senate Intelligence Committee. "Mention of Bradley's name drew mostly slow nods of approval in my soundings Friday," writes Stein (Spy Talk).

Re: Caroline Kennedy wanting to be the Jr. Senator from NY.
She has never run nor been elected to any political office, but she is a Kennedy, please move her to the front of the line. To me that gives the appearance of a sense of entitlement to a job she wants without having to do the background work to get there. I hope she is not chosen.

One more question about the juicing...what kind of blender do you suggest? My sharp-eyed brother found a Vita-Mix at a yard sale for $35, but that was the deal of the century. Subject: THE FORBIDDEN SNL SKIT
Apparently, SNL did a Bailout skit, which has created some incredible problems for NBC. They have pulled the video, and apparently gone after anyone who put the video out there, because the video has all but disappeared off the Internet.
It was up on multiple sites and virtually all the copies are gone now. There are a few new thoroughly-edited copies on the net.
Now how much power would you have to have to pull something from the entire Internet?

From the NYT story -
Then, Mr. Weiss said, Washington should invest money in existing programs that create work while cutting energy use, like home weatherization programs that have been chronically underfinanced. Congress authorized $900 million for the federal weatherization assistance program this year but only a third of that has been spent.
Mr. Bingaman noted a huge backlog of maintenance projects at national parks and other federal lands. Such a program would be similar to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps, which built many of the original roads, bridges, trails and buildings on public lands in the 1930s.

Well, if we are going to emasculate the Agency, we might as well use the Carter model and go for broke. IMO, he did terrible damage to the United States by putting assets in fear for their lives. Bradley would have fit in perfectly.

WASHINGTON, DC, December 5, 2008 (ENS) - For the first time in 25 years, people will be able to carry loaded, concealed weapons in national parks and wildlife refuges under a new rule approved by the Bush administration today.
The new rule overturns a 25 year old regulation that required guns in parks to be unloaded and placed where they are not easily accessible, such as the truck of a car.
Now, a person can carry firearms concealed and loaded at 388 of the country's 391 national park sites if that individual is authorized to carry a concealed weapon under state law in the state where the national park or refuge is located....
The new rule was approved despite concerns raised by every living former director of the National Park Service, several ranger organizations, retired superintendents, and thousands of national park visitors.

I heard an interesting little "road story" on NPR today....a woman who evidently was on the Bush bus in 1999 said he talked a lot about missing his three cats while campaigning. Just casual conversation about the cats, like most cat lovers tend toward...the woman said he was so tender toward the cats that -- as a cat person -- she found it endearing.
(She said he never mentioned missing his dog OR his wife and daughters.)
Fast forward to post 9/11:
Bush is interviewed saying with a macho tone of voice that he's a "dog man" and that it is Laura who likes the three cats....

I've noticed that most days we all tend to get the politicians we deserve. Most people don't pay any attention to what goes on around them and mark the ballot for the strangest reason. It is amazing that we get as good of politicians as we do. It is nothing for a convicted felon to get reelected. If the economy wasn't sso bad Ted Stevens would have went back to washington with a mandate.
So in my opinion we almost always get the ones we deserve and when we are lucky they lie to us and we get the kind we need. I'm hoping Obama is the later.

Jack -- Your "get what we deserve" chain of thought reminds me of a night in late October of 2004...a big party of music biz people and several formerly very liberal people said they had already early voted for Bush....my jaw dropped....and they kept saying it was about "keeping us safe."
These people had NEVER voted Republican -- hadn't voted for Bush the first time around. But they were convinced he was Big Daddy saving us from evil doers.
I well remember finally saying, "Well, I guess it depends on what we're scared of, and who shows up. We'll get the president we deserve."

Well, that's good to hear KGC -- I heard negatives from some in his circle back in the day. That he was continually trying to push his own agenda, and that he did little to settle down the divergent factions in the party that weakened McGovern.
I am also basing an opinion on just three or four political galas when I thought he belittled his wife. You would never have seen that in the case of Dick and Dottie Lamm, or Tim and Wren Wirth.
C-Bob -- Tim Wirth was another Colorado politician who was a little too honest for his own good about how he felt. Wren was one of the best and brightest, as well.

While channel surfing I came across an oldish-type western so stayed with it. It was close to the end and the end was a horrible gun-fight. I watched and it never occurred to me to change channels - I wanted to see it end. It was The Wild Bunch, which I had never seen. My heart is still pounding and that was over thirty minutes ago.
Leonard Maltin refers to the "beautiful" blood-letting - says it's Peckinpaugh's best. For the life of me I can't see what good that movie did. I don't see how the world is any better for it's having been made.
I'm sure a lot of you will disagree, tho. The way I see it, gangbangers are nothing new. What goes thru the minds of people who spend hours occupied with writing and staging and filiming such inhumanity cannot be good.

PROGRAMING BULLETIN :
Tomorrow on Book TV C-Span 2 , is 3 hours of Kevin Phillips live.
Kevin has got his finger on our pulse, he's still ahead of the wave.
Boone Pickens picked that pathetic Stephen Moore to pieces last Tue. And C-Span was there. I just saw it tonight. Pickens tipped some more about his conversations with McCain and Obama . If you want to see what the energy debate is watch Pickens. Pickens gets it, and he thinks Obama gets it. It's a hell of an hour and a half .
Warning !
Moore gets run over like a jeep over a chicken. Seriously, Moore should be fired if he's the Wall Street Journal point man on energy.

HISTORICAL BREAKTHROUGH - PROOF: CHESTER ARTHUR CONCEALED HE WAS A BRITISH SUBJECT AT BIRTH
"I’ve been forwarded the actual naturalization record for William Arthur on microfiche, obtained from the Library of Congress. He was naturalized in New York State and became a United States citizen in August 1843.
Chester Arthur perpetrated a fraud as to his eligibility to be Vice President by spreading various lies about his parents’ heritage. President Arthur’s father, William Arthur, became a United States citizen in August 1843. But Chester Arthur was born in 1829. Therefore, he was a British Citizen by descent, and a dual citizen at birth, if not his whole life.
He wasn’t a “natural born citizen” and he knew it.
That means Chester Arthur was a British subject at the time of his birth.
Because Chester Arthur covered up his British citizenship, any precedent he might have set that the country has had a President born of an alien father is nullified completely as Chester Arthur was a usurper to the Presidency. He wouldn’t have been on the ticket if it was public knowledge. Nobody knew Arthur was a British subject because nobody looked in the right place for the truth. "

Subsidies to support his wind farms.
The rest of his stuff he pushes the wind energy to replace natural gas to replace gasoline doesn't hold water.
It is too late to dig up the numbers tonight maybe later.
He may now be talking about something else, I ignore him after listening to his sales pitch the first time.
You want to reduce The growth of CO2 take the money being used to susidise wind energy and spend it on insulating houses in poor neighborhoods. more bang for the buck. A great jobs program too.

Really Cracker Jack thinking there Jack.
But you're wrong. Plain and simple. Look Pickens is 80, and he's on a " Mission from God ".
Watch the clip, and come back. He's firing on all cylinders.
A few weeks ago I wrote some stuff about Brazil , and their new discoveries off shore. Pickens talks about the discovery well I was referring to. It cost $250,000,000. He destroy's Newt & Palin's arguments.
He takes a swipe at George Allen. It's great TV.
It was done in front of The White House Writers Group .
Not exactly a bunch of chumps.

A lot of moving parts on the energy debate, but Pickens has zeroed in on just one big part of the whole thing.
30 % 0f our current fuel consumption goes to move all the toilet paper & dog food around, batteries cannot serve as a heavy transportation fuel.
For every barrel of diesel we save moving our toilet paper around, we don't burn the 3 barrels it takes to make that barrel of diesel.
Plus we'll clean the air noticabley as the switch takes place. All of this would cut into our imports of oil, and Pickens points can work. Because we switched to natural gas as a heavy transportation fuel. It's American, and we know how to build this stuff. We're talking about re-plumbing the Pilot Truck Stop, and getting Freightliner to make nat. gas tractors. J.B. Hunt, Swift, Yellow ..... as they run through the fleet we make the change. They just add another hose on the fuel island, and pull the old ones slowly out. 5 years we'd be done.
As for the gas, they're drilling under DWF airport as I type. The gas drillers in the United States by figuring out how to tap these huge shale deposits, have quietly saved our bacon. But all this downdraft has done is to cause them to start stackin' rigs. I'll get the Hugh's Tool count later.
We need a dump truck that doesn't run on diesel.

Patsi and Flatus - Thank you!!!!!!!!!!! I hear so many people talking about certain great movies and am appalled. Some people might try to claim glory for that movie by saying there are lessons to be learned from it, aside from "Stay home", but they don't want to mention that there are other ways to teach those same lessons.

this movie and that movie have this origin and that origin as original thoughts and motivations, but the bottom line is a movie has to make money...if a movie gets made it's because someone somewhere thought it would make money.......if it makes money, it's a "good" movie for someone.......
kind of like tv, radio, and newspapers....and books.

Bethy -- when you first posted about The Wild Bunch I could only vaguely recall some of the controversy...couldn't remember what Peckinpah had to say about it and so looked it up. Here's a bit from Wiki:
"The violence that was much criticized by critics in 1969 remains controversial. Director Peckinpah noted it was allegoric of the American war against Vietnam, whose violence was nightly televised to American homes at supper time. He tried showing the gun violence commonplace to the historic western frontier period, rebelling against sanitised, bloodless television westerns and films glamourising gun fights and murder. The point of the film is to take this façade of movie violence and open it up, get people involved in it so that they are starting to go in the Hollywood television predictable reaction syndrome, and then twist it so that it's not fun anymore, just a wave of sickness in the gut . . . It's ugly, brutalizing, and bloody awful; it's not fun and games and cowboys and Indians. It's a terrible, ugly thing, and yet there's a certain response that you get from it, an excitement, because we're all violent people. Peckinpah used violence as catharsis, believing his audience would be purged of violence, by witnessing it explicitly on screen. He later admitted to being mistaken, that the audience came to enjoy rather than be horrified by his films' violence, something that troubled him."

Caroline Kennedy would be an exciting choice because of the Kennedy legacy. It would be nice to also have the last remaining offspring of Jacqueline Kennedy in politics, not to mention that of Former President John F. Kennedy.
I agree she goes to the front of the line because she is a Kennedy, but that's no different than Dubya getting preference for the Repug nomination in 2000 because he was "George Bush" and that is not including the fact he ran for for and won the Texas Governor's race with no experience besides failed corporations, drugs and alcohol problems. Even the Texans liked the celebrity political name game. They chose Bush over the excellent Ann Richards.
The Repugs doth protest too much.

Her name shouldn't give her the seat -- remember all the anti-legacy outrage from some Democrats when Hillary was running?
Caroline has done some smart and interesting work. NY could certainly do worse. I guess my question is, are equally smart but more deserving people being overlooked because of the name?
Bottom line for me is -- don't really care who it is as long as it's a Democrat.

There may be more "qualified" candidates than Carolyn Kennedy, but she comes not only with a famous name but a large bank account.
It is sad that in our country that ability and proven experience doesn't get you the big prizes in politics. You either have to be self funded or have a whole lot of people pay the bills for you.
At least Carolyn has an excellent education and a proven track record of public service even if it has been out of the limelight.

5 secretaries of State advise Hillary Clinton
George Shultz, James Baker, Warren Christopher, Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell offer their views.
"Hillary Rodham Clinton will have no shortage of issues to take on as secretary of State. She steps into the job amid a global economic meltdown and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. On top of that, she must address the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while managing complex relations with Russia and China. And there are the perennial issues of hunger and disease in Africa, drugs in Latin America and the nuclear threat worldwide. How can one person manage it all?"

A New, Less Ideological Politics?
‘Partisan’ Seeks a Prefix: Bi- or Post-
"Six weeks before taking office, President-elect Barack Obama can already boast one striking accomplishment: persuading partisan, ideological adversaries to see him in a less partisan, less ideological light.
In the end, however, the possibilities for a politics that breaks traditional patterns may depend less on Mr. Obama’s talents than on widespread weariness with the dogma of ideologues — of the left and the right.
“I would like to see us enter a post-ideological era in which policies are based on pragmatic considerations rather than conformity to a set of preconceptions rooted in a rapidly vanishing past,” Judge Richard Posner, appointed by Mr. Reagan to the federal appeals court in 1981, wrote in a recent blog posting. He preceded that wish with this: “I would be happy to see conservatism exit from the political scene — provided it takes liberalism with it.”

I like his choice of Shinseki--he's a fine officer and will add a lot of credibility to the VA directorship.
I'm still deeply worried about CIA. The Agency absolutely needs an intelligence professional at the top. A professional with seasoned executive and leadership abilities. Hayden is clearly my choice. It would be a real stretch saying he was involved in the torture--that's not part of the military intelligence culture. (The aberrant happenings at Abu Ghraib were not done by military intelligence people.)
I think whoever is chosen must absolutely end rendition in the way it's been done under Mr Bush, and dramatically curtail use of contractor personnel in field operations.
Hayden, along with strong, involved Congressional oversight is, IMO, the way to go.

"President-elect Barack Obama added sweep and meat to his economic agenda on Saturday, pledging the largest new investment in roads and bridges since President Dwight D. Eisenhower built the Interstate system in the late 1950s, and tying his key initiatives – education, energy, health care –back to jobs in a package that has the makings of a smaller and modern version of FDR's New Deal marriage of job creation with infrastructure upgrades."

Solar, Our horses have a few acres to wander around on. They've got a good life. (One of them was born on the property). My husband does more of the work involving them (sometimes we have help). Native hunters: Climate is thinning caribou herds
Erasmus, from Yellow Knife in Canada's Northwest Territories about 300 miles (480 kilometers) south of the Arctic Circle, brings firsthand experience of climate change.
The caribou, or reindeer, herds are declining across North America and northern Europe, he said.
"We can't hunt because the ice is not frozen yet. Our hunters are falling through the ice, and lives are being lost," Erasmus told The Associated Press. This winter the normally dry area has been covered by thick, wet snow, further hampering hunting, he said.
Petroleum extraction from the Canadian tar sands is draining the underground water table and reducing the flow of the rivers northward, and the effects are felt hundreds of miles away, he said.

PATD-----"feelings of inadequacy soar when women are present"------thats why things like the following happen."-)
At Saint Mary's Catholic Church they have a weekly husband's marriage seminar.
At a session, last week, the Priest asked Old Man, who was approaching his 50th wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same woman for all these years.
Old Man replied to the assembled husbands, "Well, I've tried to treat her nice, spend the money on her, but the best is that I took her to Italy for the 20th anniversary!"
The Priest responded, "You are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please tell us what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary."
Old Man proudly replied, "I'm gonna go to get her."

Now men are going through what women have had to deal with ever since the White Goddess was taken out by the Sun God. Sorry if I'm having a hard time finding pity in my heart. Especially because they are self imposed feelings of inadiquicey.
Posted by: rosiethecat

I'm thinking maybe it depends on which parent was their authority figure from the time they were small children. Some men seem not to like seeing women as too authoritative. Maybe they're the ones who had more authoritative mothers. Whatever the reason, feelings of inadequacy are bad feelings, self imposed or not. Acutually all feelings are self imposed, good and bad.
Posted by: chloe
| December 7, 2008 8:02 PM
Rosie--how have you been?
I know that you are right ---most men have all gone thru times of inadiquicey at one time or another,,,,but I don't think, that they all have all of the time---I believe that women are the better of the two sexes.----but not all women , and all men should not be painted with such a broad brush......I have worked with some women that were a pleasure to work with and have not felt Intimidated ----I have even learned from one Newspaper Reporter where I worked in the advertising dept,,,she whent out of her way to introduce me to a few of her friends,,that were also reporters.
I have worked with some women that were so emasculating that I had to walk around with my hands in my pockets-----but I will say this----it is about time that women get fair treatment in all things-0---and t hat includes past History of their scarfices for our country------hows the football pools gooing ---win any--I hope?

Hey, Solar! I'm good, hope you've been well. Since you don't mind talking about such, tell me. Exactly what would these women do to 'emasculate' you? When men are trying to dehumanize a woman, it usually is in a sexually offensive way that goes from harassment all the way to rape. What do women do?

No 2nd -----that doesn't help much----but you know that there are examples------once again with felling
Women don't deserve the bullshit that they ,have gone thru,,,are going thru, and will go thru------that is one of the reasons that I was prepaired to vote for the first time in my life for someone in one of the two party's ----a Woman-----H. Clinton....

Posted by: rosiethecat

Rosie
It's all about power----the women up until??? gave us the men the power---in ancient times, and in most modern times,,,women needed the protection of the men----for protection of family from other tribes----countries from killing off the sons that they helped to grow into warriors ,,so that they in turn could become warriors,,,rape I believe is also, one of the things that were happening to other tribes, and in modern warfare for being a good killing machine,,,,,it was better to have your son rape another women t han have another womens son rape you----
I think that those time are finally behind us---some of it lingers but ,,,,,,,I agree with all that you say. Anthropology I think gives us some of the answers--not all but thru it ---it can be understood much better in order to stop it----the criminal rapest will always'''have to be cought and put away....there are some situations I believe that the death penalty is and should be melted out..

"But why are men so afraid of women?"
Rosie,
I think it's because men don't understand women (ask most men, and they'll admit they don't). Men and women think so differently. Also, the following is a paragraph out of that story Pat linked and explains another facet of it:
'But then, because men tend to bottle their emotions, they instinctively fake the confidence they once felt. This exacerbates the problem many times over, because it makes it harder for men to ask for help or for others to see that they need support.'
Posted by: chloe
| December 7, 2008 9:32 PM
Also, you could be right about the animal cruelty. Because animal cruelty is just a sign of something much worse. But you say men can't kick around women anymore to make themselves feel manly, but I'd say that many men still do.
Posted by: chloe
| December 7, 2008 9:36 PM
Rosie-----evolution also has it's say in all of this----so does economics,,,etc,,,, I once read---heard?---that city parks were put (land ) aside so that the domestic violence could be reduced------it turns out that in the summer months the wife beatings would go up ,,cos of the heat ,,so they built them a park where they could go and relax,,,,,,why do you think that women like our Patsi got involved in all of this---and does not back off whenever she hears the tiniest bit of slander towards women----she has been on the front lines of it all,,, and can tell you---it's all about power---not so much fear
Posted by: SolarCrete

Yeah, they do. but it's not as socially acceptible anymore. Why does competing with women suck the confidence out of men? I'm sorry I'm going off, but I'm one of those three-out-of-five women, if you know what I mean. 25 yrs later and I'm still trying to understand 'why'.

according to advertising, one person's insecurities are money in the bank.......
but all seriousness aside, how can you lump all men or all women into one simple statement which invariably holds true......?
Why are men so afraid of women? They aren't, except for maybe some.....afraid of maybe some women....and the reasons would all be unique to each case.......
But why are all women so ..........ah, never mind......

Chole -----yes they do bottle it up----and yes they do and hide true that they have ----ET told me that he thought I was a gay man---and thats ok---but most men, would have their manhood challenged by such a remark----and in a mans world showing too much of your maternal side is not excepted-----they don't know that they have these types of emotions------once again---religion plays a large part in all of this----I have a wonderful nephew with 3 doughters,,,,,he was and is very happy aobut them...but he wanted a little boy----they gave up on one,,,,,but them she got pregnant again,,,,and this time it was a little boy---he is now about 4 months old----he is so afraid that the girls toys , clothes , etc will influence him and his masculinity that he forbids them anywhere near him____he is a very loving man----but the bible tells him that----no fucking gays allowed------he is very inteligent and so is his wife---big time accountant (cpa) masters etc----but very stupid with religion-----

Uh-uh, Sturg-I clarified that I wasn't talking about all men. I was talking in generalizations. But, sad to say, there are steriotypes for a reason. I was watching a show just the other day that said that the agression center in womens brains are bigger than in men's, and that gives them more room to process their feelings, while with men, because it is smaller, there basically isn't enough room to think about it so much, so they tend to act more quickly on their agressivness. But, this does not change the fact that we are thinking, reasoning beings that have a choice on our actions.

Broe v Reed
"James Broe and 11 other Washington voters have filed in Washington’s Supreme Court to have the votes cast for Senator Obama set aside, because he failed to establish that he was even an American citizen running under his own name at the time of the election, let alone a “natural born citizen” as required by the U.S. Constitution. Unlike other cases that have been dismissed for lack of standing, these plaintiffs have standing under a unique Washington statute that allows any registered voter to challenge the election of someone who, at the time of the election, was ineligible to hold the office.
The Secretary of State’s office has already admitted it did nothing to determine Senator Obama’s eligibility, and Senator Obama hasn’t produced a single piece of evidence to prove he was born in the United States that would establish his eligibility ..."

" Even after fares rose to $1.25 in the spring, Lansing residents voted last month to increase property taxes to boost transit funding.
Bus and rail officials say support for transit goes beyond ridership. On Election Day, voters passed 25 of 33 ballot initiatives to increase local and state taxes for public transportation. The communities included Jonesboro, Ark., Aspen, Colo., Greensboro, N.C. and Los Angeles. "

Whale Wars -
TOKYO (AFP) – Anti-whaling activists will be arrested if they forcibly interrupt Japan's whale hunting in the Antarctic Ocean, a report said Saturday.
The fisheries agency and justice ministry made the decision as a boat belonging to the US-based Sea Shepherd Conservation Society set sail from Australia in a bid to disrupt the Japanese whaling fleet, the Sankei Shimbun said.

Recycling goes from boom to bust as economy stalls -
Cardboard that sold for about $135 a ton in September is now going for $35 a ton. Plastic bottles have fallen from 25 cents to 2 cents a pound. Aluminum cans dropped nearly half to about 40 cents a pound, and scrap metal tumbled from $525 a gross ton to about $100.
"It's never gone from so good to so bad so fast," said Marty Davis, president of Midland Davis Corp. in Pekin, Ill., who has been in the recycling business since 1975.
