As CEOs of the Big Three Automakers and the President of the UAW move to the House Financial Services Committee today for a hearing, reviews for Thursday's Senate session hardly boost chances for their plea to get $34 billion in emergency federal aid.
The only broad consensus so far, says Senate Banking Chairman Christopher Dodd, is that "inaction is not the option here."
That's about as optimistic as anyone on Capitol Hill sounds -- that something must be done. But Dodd also warned that "we've got to be a lot further along than where we are today."

Pat, When I was still watching Mathews during the primary, I remember sensing that he really did love Pennsylvania (and of course it's obvious how much he loves politics). He has a lot of connections there, and I think he thinks that he can really make a difference (or at least wants to give it a try).
I don't really blame him for keeping a foot in one door, while deciding what to do with the other foot. I always recommend that when considering a change.
If he gets the go ahead from those advising him, I think he'll do it. And, of course, I think he's interesting in seeing what NBC offerings him regarding his contract renewal.....
...the world keeps turning.

Ugh Shelby. When he was a Democratic Congressman from Alabama he was on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and striving toward the Senate. The committee was marking up some bill that dealt with sugar. Voting one way would have helped the sugar beet people and the voting the other way would have helped the sugar cane people. His staff was trying to explain a nuance int he amendment and Shelby waved her off. He just looked down at her and said, "I don't care about all that. Just tell me: Which side is the money on?"
Gross. It's been 20 years and I've never forgotten that exchange.

They announced at work last night that they will be laying off 100 people as of Jan. 5th. They will ask for volunteers at first and then they will have involuntary layoffs until they reach a total of 100 people. These will be long term layoffs. I'm pretty safe. I think there are at least 200 people below me senority-wise. However, I work directly with two guys who would be laid off for certain as far as I know. Although one of the guys said he wanted to be laid off.

wiki: electric guitar:
Early years
Sketch of Rickenbacker "frying pan" lap steel from 1934 patent application.Electric guitars were originally designed by an assortment of luthiers, guitar makers, electronics enthusiasts, and instrument manufacturers. Guitar innovator Les Paul experimented with microphones attached to guitars. Some of the earliest electric guitars adapted hollow bodied acoustic instruments and used tungsten pickups. This type of guitar was manufactured beginning in 1932 by Electro String Instrument Corporation in Los Santos under the direction of Adolph Rickenbacher and George Beauchamp. Their first design was built by Harry Watson, a craftsman who worked for the Electro String Company. This new guitar which the company called "Rickenbacker" would be the first of its kind.
The earliest documented performance with an electrically amplified guitar was in 1932, by guitarist and bandleader Gage Brewer. The Wichita, Kansas-based musician had obtained two guitars, an Electric Hawaiian A-25 (Fry-pan, lap-steel) and a standard Electric Spanish from his friend George Beauchamp of Los Angeles, California. Brewer publicized his new instruments in an article in the Wichita Beacon, October 2, 1932 and through performances that month.

RR -- Typical politician mantra? Perhaps, I just never heard it put so blatently open. Actually most of the pols I know are more concerned about the districts, their hometown businesses, their constituents. Most of the pols I know are idealists who got into elective office because they wanted to make a difference and make people's lives better. But I always hung out with liberals.
Good to hear that the recession is not affecting your part of the country. In my supposedly recession-proof area just south of DC and in the heart of military contractor land we are seeing the effects. Lots of foreclosures (about 13% in my neighborhood), job losses, food stamps way up, WIC not being able to serve all needy mothers and babies, food bank shelves empty. Aside from federal workers, building and construction industry supplied most of the good-paying jobs around here -- that's now ground to a halt and we're seeing the effects. The military and federal workers are keeping the some of the stores open, but a lot of the small stores have closed. We're worried about keeping Home Depot and Lowes open.

RR -- I agree about using self-fulfilling prophecy angle of recession and how the media is pumping the economy story. I'm a boomer too and I remember some of the recessions you're talking about. This one just feels close to home, maybe it's because of my job working with people who have been affected by it, and having friends who have lost their jobs and or their homes maybe it's just Bush fatigue.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Corp.
GM 3.95, -0.16, -3.9%) will lay off about 2,000 more factory workers in early 2009 because of a continued decline in U.S. auto sales, the Associated Press reported Friday, citing a company spokesman. GM plans to lay off 890 workers at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant, cut 390 jobs at Orion Township, Mich. plant, and another 700 workers at Oshawa, Ontario factory in February, spokesman Chris Lee told the news agency. Cars produced at these plants include Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Impala and Pontiac G5 and G6 models, the AP reported.

Patsi -- Did you see the code in that article? "Harridan, power-grasping, self-serving." The writer never said how DWS undermined the DEM candidacies of the three GOPs. Sounds like sour grapes from one or all of those losing campaigns that think DWS didn't do enough to put them in the winning column. Could be that those seats were never winnable, and why throw resources toward races that would not produce no matter who was running? .

Colorado had its first newspaper.

Formula One? What's next, NASCAR? Broadway shows are closing; retailers are wilting on the vine. We don't need more lay-offs in the auto industry and all of the industries it supports, but if the gov't has shored up AIG, why wouldn't GM's credit-default swaps bail them out? Why are they asking for more money from the gov't? I've got to be missing something. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

"GM's credit-default swaps bail them out"
Blue
As I understand it
GM doesn't get that money, the folks who own GM bonds and bought a swap do.
That means when GM defaults on their debt, through AIG, we still pay, so we might as well pay up front avoid the middle man.

Now CNN writes this about O.J...
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) -- A Las Vegas judge sentenced fallen gridiron great O.J. Simpson to at least 15 years in prison for leading an armed hotel room confrontation over sports memorabilia in 2007.
A pre-sentencing report recommends an 18-year prison term for O.J. Simpson, 61.
Simpson could become eligible for parole in about nine years. Grimacing, his head cast down, Simpson was escorted from the courtroom in shackles.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/12/05/oj.simpson.sentencing/index.html
I am sure that Nicole's sister and the parents of Marc Goldman are going to fight to oppose any attempt to have him paroled. It's sad that it has to take another case of misconduct for any sort of prison time to be served by Mr. Simpson, but one thing is for sure... after many celebrities are acquitted of crimes, usually by star struck jurors, it is nice to see that trend broken. Not just O.J. but Boy George too...
And the world goes round...
Posted by: EuroTom
| December 5, 2008 2:15 PM
Yeah Simpson is a real gem... Just got to the last paragraph of the article:
Although Simpson insisted in court that he meant to retrieve some items to give to the Goldmans, the judge pointed to his words, as captured on the tape: "You didn't want those items falling into the hands of the Goldmans. You made reference on the tape to them as the gold-diggers."
"If our efforts for all these years of pushing him drove him to commit armed robbery in Vegas, great!" Fred Goldman told reporters after the hearing.
"This monster is where he belongs -- behind bars."

w'jack - Thank You. I've only asked that question a half dozen times. So, now I wonder who owns GM bonds and will benefit from the auto bailout? Yeah, I guess it's better to have jobs & keep the tangential businesses and are economy going. Maybe we just look at it as a jobs program.
If the auto industry did go b'bye, would that have any effect on future manufacturing of munitions, perhaps? I guess we do need to be able to produce our own stuff and keep the factories in working order. Complete dependency on outside manufacturing or foreign-owned manufacturers could be a big concern.

Unemployment predicted to go to 8%. Of course that figure doesn't include anyone who has never worked but it looking for a job (recent graduates). It doesn't count anyone who was working for $25 an hour and now works for $10 because that is what they could get. It doesn't count anyone who has exhausted their unemployment and no longer is reflected in the numbers.
Then there are the job losses that are disguised by women and children going to work in "service" job numbers because daddy lost his job.
It's getting ugly out there.

I took care of a friend's Shetland Pony for 10 years one week.
Mean little bastard thanked me for feeding him twice a day by kicking me every time I entered his stall.
Another time, he took off and ran wild while hitched to a pony cart full of terrified little kids who, until then, thought ponies were supposed to be cute and hayrides were supposed to be fun.
No one shed a tear when that little devil died.

Firday night musings --------Beffalo
A--- Cow---and a--- Buffalo= true love
About Cows----Our gang,, used to go camping at Dodgeville Minnesota, there was a farmer that had 1000-maybe—999--or 1001?:) acres, we used to rent out 5-8 A frames from him, depending on how many friends went along. On on e of the times that we went the owner asked us if we ever tasted Beefalo,,,,we had no idea what he was talking about----he explained that it was a buffalo ( bison) crossed with a cow, and that we would have a lot of fun, and find it very interesting.
We made plans to go and round up some cattle for him that he said he had in a pasture,,,told us that he wanted( a cow) number 89 ---had a tag on her ear,,,the time came to go to the round up and there were lots of people frome wis. Il, and other states---about 60-80 total,,,we were the only ones that could go out and get ole 89,,the others stayed on the camp grounds, one of my friends even dressed the part---he looked like wyatt earp--had on a cowboy hat boots and all---same guy ( I told you about) that left the drive in show, and didn't put the speakers back---well any way'sss we went out to where the cows were, and spotted her right away----everybody was making fools of them selves. trying to make the cows move,,,yelling, whistling and what not, while the farmer laughed his ass off at us.
I remember taking my hat off and waving it behind the cow, and it started moving,,,,now we were getting somewhere!,,,Sue ,my date for the weekend, was with me and waving her hands in the air, and laughing when the cow moved along,,,,well she got a little too close and the cow dumped ( pooped) one on the ground that splattered all over Sue's foot and ankle,,,she didn't know what to do,just ran around the field for a little bit and then decided to run over to the A frame to washit (hey two words in one) wash it off her, she spent the whole afternoon cleaning her self up, nothing was clean enough for her...some how it was partly my fault but ...she'll get over it,,,later on we were hugging---and I pushed her back, telling her that I did not her new perfume----smelled a little like---channel # 89---she---started to throw what ever she could find at me----started laughing, and said that I would be sorry-------I was later,,,,thats the trouble with not controlling an overdeveloped sense of humor some times!! she forgave me---after making me suffer some,,,and then :-))))))
We manged get 89 into a coral that was all fenced in at the front and rear with two buildings at either side,,,,,,,well we were all ready to go after the buffalo next,,,again the farmer started to laugh at us, said that he didn't have any frikin buffalo----the cow was going to be artificially inseminated the next day,,,,,there was a vet on the way from Tx on a plane----told us that he would be carrying the goods(frozen sperm) in an old time milk container---u know those big silver ones with the lid-----Sue by now had recovered and joined the rest of us-----boy what a fun evening with all the people from diff states----lots of music---booze, joints, and no trouble---we started to call the vet-- the Breeder,,, the breeder this the breeder that,,,we had no idea what was going to happen----he came in during the night while we partyed all night----about 10-11 olcock,,next morn-- the farmer was ring bells, making all the noise that he could to get us up;
We were all hung over from the party---but had beer in our hands already to cure us,,,once again we were the only ones that were allowed to go in the rear were the cow was,,,.the vet was there in the corral with the cow----she(the cow) was carrying on something awful---I didn't know that a cow could be so agile---she was climbing over the fence ,,--- and moved around pretty fast-----when she did calm down, the vet went and got the large 5 gallon milk can that carried the frozen seamen,,,he took out a hug syringe, and laid it aside ----He was enjoying himself at our expense,,,some of the girls, clearly embarrassed,,it had all been a lot of fun---but now it was time to get serious------and they were a little uncomfortable------My surprise,,was when the Vet took out a big plastic bag , put his hand ,his whole arm up to the shoulder and ask me to tie it for him------asked him what he was up to with this bag----another smart ass laugh, and told me that he needed that to help when he would inject the cow---said that he was going to insert his arm and the syringe in the cow----I didnt' say anything---what could you say?---by now the cow was sedated or something cos she was pretty calm now-------the vet did his thing ----the girls all looked away ----the guys –we all made stupid jokes in order to cover up our ignorance of it all--------after it was all done the vet wanter to shake hands with us and say goodby ----no one took his hand---he just laughed again and left-----lot of questions from the other campers------we embellished all the facts just to get laughs all night
The following year we had a special invitation from the farmer to come up for a special weekend--------we did -,,,the following night that we arrived he told us that we were going to all have beefalo steaks------from the calf that ol 89 had-----it was excellent ----some did not like it cos it did not taste the same as store bought steak---I liked it a lot-----tasted a little like chicken------(no just kidding) it tasted fine not salted, or any preservatives and all,,,,,,,,it was sold in some markets in Min, and Wisc,,,,but i never saw them sold anywhere else.
Chloe about getting lost----I kinda like doing it sometimes,,
I used to love going running by myself in those mountains ------ I would get lost up there, and would not find my way for a cple or hrs ---- and when I eventually did ---it was worth it-----sometimes I like to approach life this way-----get lost in something new---and once you ( you can't ask for help—gotta be on you own) find the key's to unlock the mysteries ---baaaaam--it's all clear----what a rush------like when I learned to read, and do construction blue prints, and take offs----lots out there to learn,,,,gotta find something to get lost in???---if Tony doesn't show up tonight I'll go find him :-))

Doing pretty good today...had lunch with a man I used to work for and that was great fun...hadn't seen him in a while. Plus he hired me (and paid up front) to do some writing for him....I'm always thankful to get a gig in this friggin' economy.

Yeah -----she has had to have a sense of humor ----once while we were waiting in line, to see a movie I got a little bored,,,and started to have a fake fight with her ----(she never acknowledged me all this time) I raised my voice and
told her that, I was getting tired of paying for the show, popcorn, sodi pop,,, and wanted to know when the hell she was going to come up with some cash----the little old lady ( think her name was Renee--or Bethy can't really member but she gave Judy 5 bucks ---Judy just told the lady that I was being me(stupid) the line started to move and I smiled at the lady, and gave her 5 buck back----only cos Judy was watching me___HA

No ---auctions for me for a while---had to help my son that got laid off---and a nephew---left me a little careful , for now-----they will allways be another great auction
My favorites are Municipal's (-they some times get as many as 10 together)--they will sell anything at huge bargain----anything at all -----it is not a personal piece of car, suv. equitment etc---so they don't care what is sells for----the trouble comes from Idiots that drive the cost up----thats when I would like to give them a big Tripitas taco right in the kisser (tripe taco---mmm good) that you were talking about,,,,,,,,and did you get a load of Surg talking Mexicalli the other day! :-))))

That reminds me with the cold weather It is time to go down the street and have a big bowl of menudo or pozole. The only way I will eat hominy is if a Mexican cooks it.
They are a family run restaurant with mom in the kitchen and the kids waiting table. They do hand made tortillas too. They serve the soup in this large serving bowl that must hold a quart or more.

Solar - great story! It reminded me of a friend's story re some frat boys who played a revenge trick on some girls - got a huge jar , filled it with water, added some tadpoles, and gave it to the girls telling them it was whale sperm. Ick!
On the premise that reflected glory is better than no glory, I want to brag a little. The daughter-in-law of a friend of mine is Japanese. She told her parents when she was 10 or so that she was coming to America.
She did just that and ended up with a phd from ucla, and a husband who got his phd in chemistry at ucla.
He spent two years at the max planck institute, and now they both are associate profs at univ of minn. She, while having two kids, wrote a serious text book which has been published by Standord Univ Press.
Some of you might find the topic interesting. The title is Science for the Empire: Scientific Nationalism in Modern Japan. It's the history of the growth of science in Japan.
In the late 1800's, the Japanese threw out the feudalistic regime and brought the emperor back - his family had been cloistered for hundreds of years.
To get the people to accept the emperor they sold the idea that he was a god, backed up with mucho mythology. After a while they realized that science didn't mix with the mythology, and had to fix that since they knew they needed science.
So this book covers the years 1920-1940 and the drive to co-mingle science with their myth. This young woman is something else. Writing in her second language must have been easy for her - HA! I just read the introduction but may have to give the whole thing a go - it's history and about a topic I could never have imagined existed. It's expensive so maybe I can borrow her mother-in-law's copy.

My best waiting in line with someone story:
I was dating a man with the quickest instant wit I have ever found. We were going to one of those massive West LA super plexes where you buy your tickets and then get in the line for the specific movie you want to see.
We were standing quietly chatting, when a woman dashed up and panted, "Is this the line for "Endless Love" to which he immediately replied,
"No Maam, just the movies"

Very cute picture! But you must have forgotten, Cheyenne is a buckskin, and a beauty. I do have a horse that looks like your picture though. She's a paint (and another beauty). We call her America, because she has a pattern on her side that is the shape of America.
Sure has been nice to see you back.
"..about getting lost----I kinda like doing it sometimes,,
I used to love going running by myself in those mountains --"
Solar, I know what you mean about getting lost (but I'd rather do that in my mind). I used to be a runner too, every day for years. Not long distance though, usually about 4 miles every morning. I stopped when we moved to Texas, and never started again. To me, during a really good run, I would feel that thing you said about finding the key to unlock the mysteries (and everything becoming clear). I always needed to be listening to some good music (I preferred rock) while running. They didn't have ipods back then, but they did have cassettes and mini cassette players (and of course radio, but fm only). Boy how far we've come in the last few years. I really do miss that feeling that you get when you run, but can't see myself getting into it now (or here).
But you did bring back some good memories. :)

Hey Tony,
(I know you're out exercising, but..)
I'm glad to hear that you're working on and enjoying a good relationship with Vince. They're always worth the work you have to put into them and there's nothing to compare to that kind of companionship. My husband and I have been together for so long, do everything together, and I can't imagine living my life any other way. I hope you and Vince will be together as long as you want to be.
At any rate, glad to see things are going so well for you (and your business). But be careful washing those windows. It's sounds like you might be up quite a few stories sometimes. How do you do that? Take care. :)

OK folks I take back all the positive things I said this morning.
We are in the last days.
Bruce Bartlett, the original supply sider, is now a (gasp) Keynesian
"What Would Keynes Do?"
" But in the end, there is a limit to what the Fed can do by itself. At some point, government spending must be the engine that pulls the economy out of recession, because only that can compensate for the fall in private spending that has caused velocity to drop and brought on deflationary conditions.
But it must be the right kind of spending. It must draw real resources out of the economy--that is the only kind of spending that will work. Buying bad mortgages and sending out more rebate checks won't do any good. "
http://www.forbes.com/opinions/2008/12/04/depression-deflation-velocity-oped-cx_bb_1205bartlett.html
BTW
It is a very well written, informative and written on the level a layman can understand. I highly recomend it.

Ha, Solar. You are on my good side, and once someone gets there, it's almost impossible to get off of it. So not to worry.
And I like your mind. Maybe that no motive thing is it. I agree with the politics thing you said. You can't get away from it, no matter where you go. But you can avoid certain people, and make the best of all the good things here.

What you said about the gas going to a very low price,,, and then tax it .25 cents, and then an additional .5 cents a month for six months( i hope i have it right) is great----it's only a matter of time that it goes up anyway---cple of things that I would add---that is it has to go for road work, bridges, etc,,,,and nothing else---can't borrow from it,,,,nada---it will put a lot of people backk to work and get the blood ( $ ) flowing again
I still would like a flat sales tax , and a flat income tax,,,with credits for the poor----tweak it--I think that you can follow the money a little better--lots of tax's that we don't even know about that exists now???---I can't look at my bill cos they make no sense to me----I can figure them out but decline to do so ----just angers me

Good evening all!
Am a bit leery about Caroline as Sen. Firstly, she doesn't have any experience which should be a factor in NY and these difficult times. Secondly I have a hard time picturing her doing a complete personality change and becoming a publicly accessible figure, nor can I picture her doing it for any length of time. Additionally there is IMO a sense of the marketed contrived aspect of Obama
There was Camelot, Liealot, Fallalot, Forgetalot, Cumalot, Fuckedupalot. wonder what the upcoming administration will be considered....

I'm sorry, but this is the same woman who, during the campaign, pointed to example after example of sexism directed at her saying that, quote, "It's been deeply offensive to millions of women"?
Is this the same woman who pointed out the references to her cleavage or her cackle, the comments by certain pundits and the media?
The same woman who concluded, quote, "the remnants of sexism are alive and well" after someone at a rally shouted out "iron my shirt"?
She made a point of calling people out during the campaign, and for that, she became a hero to millions of women. But now, the campaign is over.
She is joining Team Obama, and, apparently, this photo of her likeness being groped by another key member of Obama's team doesn't bother her a bit. Just good-natured fun, or so her spokesman

It's the senate. Mavericks are isolated. and seniority is everything. A newbie gets along or gets nothing. This is doubly true when one party has a large majority as the Democrats do.

"And what brings you to that opinion of Daschle"
The most obvious fact that points in that direction is the fact he was majority leader. The majority leader is the ultimate insider. And it is the only post in the senate for the young and ambitious.
Lyndon Johnson found out how to make it a position of power. BTW, he kissed a lot of ass to get it. A prime ass kisser was young Lyndon.

UNITED NATIONS -- Countries around the world are looking to Barack Obama for leadership in reaching a global climate treaty next year, but no nation will be able to singlehandedly deliver a final agreement, a senior U.N. official said Thursday.

Representatives from 190 countries are meeting in the Polish city of Poznan from Dec. 1-12 to work toward an ambitious new treaty that hopefully will be adopted at a meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 2009. It would replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.

If you are ever snowed in for a week or so you might read Robert Caro's book about Johnson "Master of the Senate". It goes into great detail on the working of the senate and how Johnson manipulated it.
And yep if he didn't like you he could be a bastard. But he made Hubert Humphrey the senate leader of the liberal faction just by refusing to deal with any of the others. Humphrey wisely remembered that.
BTW the book is the size of the average unabridged dictionary. Not something you would have around for a weekend read.

More alligators from Mr. Johnson's swamp -
The approximately 42 hours of telephone recordings released Thursday cover the period from May 1968 through January 1969, when Johnson left office. The LBJ Library has archived and periodically released groups of the recordings that were made during his presidency. The phone conversations took place at the White House and at the LBJ Ranch in Texas.
"This is treason," Johnson said, referring to people close to Nixon, during a conversation with Senate Republican leader Everett Dirksen.

Second, at the risk of being like the G Man, I think LBJ had a big hand in the JFK murder and as most good Democrats, we revere the Kennedys.
Third, I like politics and history but not that much.So does DW and she reads to me at night, so this seems something down her alley. :-)
Lastly, I'm from OK and we hate Texas.

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2008) — If you're happy and you know it, thank your friends—and their friends. And while you're at it, their friends' friends. But if you're sad, hold the blame. Researchers from Harvard Medical School and the University of California, San Diego have found that "happiness" is not the result solely of a cloistered journey filled with individually tailored self-help techniques. Happiness is also a collective phenomenon that spreads through social networks like an emotional contagion.

the stark reality of politics, 101....
your mission should you decide to exception it.......read the story of what happened politically in athens at the end of the 27 year war between sparta and athens.......the spartans, victorious, imposed a rule of thirty guys.........the thirty guys requested a garrison of Spartans to make sure that their rulings were adhered to..........the two lead guys of the thirty [cf. the ruling dudes of the french revolution] fell out and the guy with "right" on his side was finally fed the hemlock...........overpowered by men with daggers and men with lies who controlled them........but I cannot capsule the history of the immediate followation of the oligarchic resolution of said war.
so I say......if you want to see politics laid bare as practised by your typical humans (there is nothing new under the sun)........check out the aftermath of the peloponnesian war as it applied to athens.....
You'll find that Xenophon caught up the unfinished thread of Thuc's history of that war.......
Xenophon.........book: HELLENICA........the one I have is translation Carleton L. Brownson...........the story of the aftermath politically is not that long .....begins around page 110 and maybe fifteen or 20 pages, one side of page only..............

beryl markham by wiki:
"When Markham decided to take on the Atlantic crossing, no pilot had yet flown non-stop from Europe to New York, and no woman had made the westward flight solo, though several had died trying. Markham hoped to claim both records. On September 4, 1936, she took off from Abingdon, England. After a 20-hour flight, her Vega Gull, The Messenger, suffered fuel starvation due to icing of the fuel tank vents, and she crash-landed near Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (her flight was, in all likelihood, almost identical in length to Mollison's). In spite of falling short of her goal, Markham had become the first woman to cross the Atlantic east-to-west solo, and the first person to make it from England to North America non-stop. She was celebrated as an aviation pioneer.[4]
Markham chronicled her many adventures in her memoir, West With The Night, published in 1942."

Bethy, you are right -- it's called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that was developed to resolve symptoms resulting from disturbing and unresolved life experiences (per wiki).
Some claim it was used successfully first after Oklahoma City and again after 9/11. More about that in a book by its discoverer. Very interesting how it was identified and developed. Don't know if it works, but I've heard first-hand from some who say it does.

Cheney has amply demonstrated what a clusterf*ck it is when you introduce a separate power structure within the whitehouse.

Anyone working on this economic downturn has to pay attention to something that has been totally ignored for way too long:
A 1993 study indicated that about 23% of the US population is functionally illiterate. That's 40 million people who can not read well enough (above a 5th grad level) to understand and hold anything but the most menial job in today's economy. A follow up study in 2006 showed no significant improvement.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literacy_in_the_United_States
Many of these people have never worked, only work subsistence temporary jobs and they tend not to get reported in the unemployment figures.
With modernization and off shoring, those numbers could go even higher.
Posted by: Jamie
| December 6, 2008 10:56 AM
More scary literacy numbers
1/3 of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.
42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college.
80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year.
70 percent of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years.
57 percent of new books are not read to completion.

Only to those college educated study makers is that a true statement.
The rest of us know that there are people at all levels of society that have low level reading skills. They just keep it hidden.
I can read but I can't do what my former boss (who couldn't read well) did which was run a very successful contracting business. As we were both old fart country boys he trusted me enough to hand me something and say read this and tell me if it says what I think it does.
BTW, 5th grade reading skills should let anyone function.

Jack,
My grandfather only went to the 5th grade, but he was a math whiz and used to tell his children about their algebra homework, "I can tell you the answer, but you will have to put in the XYZ things"
The problem is that we have outsourced so many of the jobs that someone with a limited education could earn a decent living.
There is a difference between book smarts and street smarts. Both are useful, but we are fast approaching the time when you won't be able to work at anything except possibly some forms of art without at least minimal book smarts plus we are falling so far bethind the rest of the developed world that without investment in research there won't be as many of those jobs either.

All you have offered is snark and when you do that you get snark in return.
One piece of non snark. Your reading comprehension skills are atrocious.
No where did I say "reading at a 5th grade is adequate"
I said "function" and function does not equal adequate.

You asked me once if I had any idea for cocktails----at that time I thought that you probably,,know most of them ( good ones )-----maybe this one for Christmas cocktails here at TM or for your house get togethers
Christmas Cocktail,,great party punch for the holiday's-------Apple- Grape--Lemon Juice----------3 golden Delicious or other sweet apples-1-( 4-ounce) bunch of green or purple grapes, preferably organic, with stems---2/4 lemon, with the skin-----Cut the apples into narrow wedges. If the gapes are not organic,,remove the stems,, Cut the lemon into slices, Process the apple wedges and grapes in a juicer,,adding the lemon slices about halfway through....
Add your favorite booze to taste---1 once—in 8-12 oz's??
I don't put Tequillia in the punch,,,some just like it plain or just put in a real little bit and then add more later,,,hope you like

That's a door factory in Chicago, and it appears to be a union shop,
from the story -
" Crain's Chicago Business reported that the company's monthly sales had fallen to $2.9 million from $4 million during the past month. "
That's a 25 % drop, almost the same number that BMW put up 2 days ago.
It's shaping-up to look like a quarter of our economic activity has disappeared in 60 days this fall.

Re: Caroline Kennedy wanting to be the Jr. Senator from NY.
She has never run nor been elected to any political office, but she is a Kennedy, please move her to the front of the line. To me that gives the appearance of a sense of entitlement to a job she wants without having to do the background work to get there. I hope she is not chosen.
