  10. The Utah Mining Association said that at first glance, it is supportive of WGA's efforts to focus on a national energy plan that reduces greenhouse gases.

"But as you know, the devil is in the details in how you get there," president David Litvin said. "In this country right now we have a big push for renewables and many people think we can just move off our traditional sources of energy supply, but over 50 percent of our electricity comes from coal. Renewables only count for 2 percent of electricity produced. You can't move from 2 percent to 50 percent overnight."

    -----------------------------
Nobody, I mean nobody ................... is calling for this to happen overnight. What people are calling for, is for it to start, and for it to start now.

My favorite thing about whales is that they got fed up with the hassle of being land mammals and finally said: "Screw this! Let's get back in the water!"

  41. Just a heads up....from Odetta's manager:

    Dear Friends of Odetta,

On behalf of Odetta's adopted daughter Michelle Esrick and her niece Jan Ford (in California), I would like to share with you - Odetta's large extended family of brothers and sisters - the current health crisis in her life. On Saturday, she went into Lenox Hill Hospital for a check-up and IV nourishment. However, on Sunday evening she went into kidney failure, and we were told that the next 24 hours would determine if she would survive.

Miraculously, she made it through that emergency, but is still listed in critical condition. I was on the road when she went in the hospital and rushed back on Sunday. Jan and I are thankful that Michelle was here and has been by Odetta's side every moment of this ordeal.

Odetta believes she is going to sing at Obama's Inauguration, and I believe that is the reason she is still alive. She has a big poster of Barack Obama taped on the wall across from her bed. Her old heart has already outperformed and lasted far beyond the expectations of the heart specialists who treated her in January-March 2007 when she had her last health crisis while touring out West. Now compounded with the kidney failure, the doctors at the hospital are trying to do everything possible to stabilize her system and prevent the weakening of her other organs. They have her on dialysis now to rid the body of the toxic poisons that have built up, and it seems to be slowly working. She is sleeping a lot, but after a dialysis treatment and some food, she is coherent and talking. She is not in pain. We are told that she will be in the ICU Unit for at least another week, and that we'll just have to wait and see after that.

All of you are well aware of Odetta's indomitable spirit. Accordingly, I wouldn't bet against her singing for Barack in January!

If you would like to send a card, I know that she would love to hear from you (address of the hospital is below).

    Ms. Odetta Gordon
    Room # 719, 7th Floor ICU Unit

  47. ""few prodigies have been found in fields like writing, painting, sculpture -- different set of skills and brain cells than those involving mathematics and music. ""

    Patsi 8:53

Patsi - I couldn't agree with you more. That is the basis for my belief that music IS life and life IS music.
Movement and rhythm and meter and sound and emotion and harmony and dissonance - our bodies, all bodies are musical instruments. Oceans and waves and rivers have sound and rhythm - trees have rhythm which can be heard. Wind and storms - they have rhythm. They are put together with math.

You can remember a beautiful painting and can quote magnificent words, but you can enjoy music anytime anywhere just by singing yourself - it is your body.

I watch our crazy two year-old as he will start dancing and bopping around to no music we hear. It's in him.

That's why I feel that musicians are the most valuable and indispensable people on the planet. They give to the future simply by creating possibilities for other geniuses - look at the genius of Horowitz and Perlman we have thanks to Mozart and Beethoven, just to name a few of the thousands and tens of thousands we haven't heard.

Of course, it stands to reason, doesn't it, that our schools have had to cut out music classes because people don't want to be taxed too much. They can't kill music, tho, because music is part of us all.

I think maybe I've gone off on this tangent before - sorry if you've gotten it twice.

Unfortunately, when you cut music your math scores drop as too many of the "back to basics" crowd have found out too late to help the children whose brains they crippled by not giving them rhythm that they all feel in their heartbeats.

  56. Jamie.....while my wife was preparing to give birth as we lived in the EverGreen Motel in Aurora (Indoor Heated Pool....Korean Owned, HBO and cable, on Colfax east.....)......we were treated thru the freakishness of time and space to the television spectacle of that bill cosby stand-up video......his impression of the doctor "sitting down there like johnny bench" came to me as i was witnessing my daughter's birth and I began laughing......the nurses and everyone gave me very foul looks and I quickly regained my composure and the event proceeded.......but for some reason me and archie, the clubowner, sat around later and saw the same video and he went around after saying that at every available.......along with his "moo-jicians is like chickens in a barnyard theory.
Me and him sat around a lot, mostly in the mornings over coffee as the phones rang.........

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 29, 2008 7:56 PM

  57. I'ma tell ya......."very foul looks" doesn't begin to express the nature of the eyes on me at my outburst of laughter during the course of this, my lady's ordeal......and remember, they were wearing masks.....nothing but eyes......very serrrrrrrrious eyes.....

sturgeone went fish-like and displayed a calm demeanor....................surely an explanation of bill cosby's routine and how it applied to the present situation would only be viewed as an encumbrance and possibly a totally un-necessary diversion from the sacred nature of the ancient ritual taking place before our very eyes........

But even better was the gift that came in mid-September, when the Spungens threw a party to celebrate the company's acquisition by a Swedish company.

They gave away $6.6 million in year-end bonuses to Peer's 230 employees, decided by a formula based on each worker's years of service.

Thanks! I really enjoy it here.I get to hob knob with some of the best and brightest such as yourself and Jamie,Chloe,Solar,Bethy and many other great folks.I continually learn something and that's always good.TM lifts me up when I'm down,I had a really terrible week,my mom's dog Pepper who was 16 drown in my pool!! I let him in from the yard and turned my back away from the pool and was taking the hot tub cover off and turned back around to the pool and there Pepper was at the bottom! I jumped in and got him up on the pool deck and applied CPR,I got him back breathing and alert and coughing up water but his breathing wasn't so good,so I took him to an emergency clinic, where he spent the night ,when I picked him up the next morning to take him to his vet. he was much worse.I got him to his vet., but after a few hours the vet. called with the sad news Pepper had died! I am so sad, that was my last connection to my mom....Pepper had a fine life, but i feel bad ,it all happened in less than a minute...Oh Shit...

  85. Tony, you poor guy! What a horrible story but you know you gave the little guy a very nice life - remember you were his link to your mom, also.

Frankly, Tony, you pick me up when I'm stressed. You are the sweetest and kindest person on this blog, and you warm my heart constantly with you sunny disposition. I'm really sick to death of the nastiness and the hardship that seems to have taken over, and there you are with your smile.

Solar - that goes for you, too. You are so upbeat that you calm my blood pressure. With all the macho posturing around the world, and here too, it makes me smile when you show the strength of your self-confidence when you can easily say you made a mistake. You don't have to make others pay for your self-doubts because you know you're doing fine. What a relief to know you don't feel inadequate and don't need to prove anything.

I learned years ago that to easily admit a weakness or mistake triggers the jealousy reaction in some people. I found out that so many people are aware of their own shortcomings but terrified to admit it. They really resent others who are strong enough to accept their faults and laugh at themselves. Those people can't accept themselves - it's not your problem.

  117. I noticed one of those things that only appear when they suddenly go away. Like a loud noise when it stops.

Car commercials, this Sunday morning I noticed the silence that had been growing for weeks. There aren't any truck commercials with knobby tires grinding over rocks, and mud. None of the old style ads that implied I wasn't a real Texan unless I had a 3/4 ton crew cab, with duelly's on the back, and a Detroit diesel to move it all around.

This Sunday morning the only car ad in heavy rotation was the Toyota one selling the car made out of leaves and twigs. It was floating on an ocean of oil company ads, telling us how they, " get it ".

Now, if we can just get that leaves and twigs car to run on fungi.

Because evangelicals understand in their guts something the are scared to admit in their mind. God enjoys sneaking up behind you and kicking you in the ass. And he doesit at time when you are unable to maintain your balance.

It is the reason I refuse to believe in God, for if he exists we're going to have to have a long talk about some of his habits.

  122. Bethy--Wrote----and I am responding,,like this in the hopes that it will help someone out there in space.

"I learned years ago that to easily admit a weakness or mistake triggers the jealousy reaction in some people. I found out that so many people are aware of their own shortcomings but terrified to admit it. They really resent others who are strong enough to accept their faults and laugh at themselves. Those people can't accept themselves - it's not your problem."'

I would like to expound on this a little-------at some point all of my workers have told me, that they appreciate that I do admit when i make a mistake------believe me in construction mistakes are part of the job----it is how you correct them that counts -----If a worker see you covering up for a dumb mistake-------he will cover up in his mistake that will at the very least cause you to be embarrassed with the client, a most probably, time and cash.

I have lived pretty hard,,and partyed pretty hard, and made a lot of mistakes-----some I learned from, some I didn't------Once that I finally decided that I had been carrying a lot of childhood baggage I don't remember 60% of my childhood----lot of bad stuff---my dad used to make me kneel, when he wanted to punish me (which was often-i was pretty outspoken and rebellious) and hit me with an electric extension cord (Marine Corps- boot camp was a
breeze for me) cos i would not let him hit my two youngest brothers--he was a fuckin monster when he wanted to be,,,my mom a good catholic -----in her religious ignorance had to stand by her man-----she was great at making things better, Well anyway I told my worker that once I figured it out----that the hardest part was to look in the mirror and forgive myself-----i stood in front of full length mirror without any clothes on---and recalled all the hurtful things that I did to others, and they to me,,,,and while crying like a baby---i realized that the one I hurt the most,,,was myself,,,,,,and forgave myself,,,,,it was a huge weight off my shoulders-------I have always been a pretty happy guy ,,,but a friend, and family said that there was a diff. in me-------my older brother , the decon asked me if i found god-----I told him that I had found myself....we always talk about our feelings ----sometimes it get a little personal ,,but we have very strong ties in our family.

I felt that there was something still missing for awhile ----a year later if figured it out again-------My Father-------he was now retired living in Mexico,,,I took two weeks off work and flew to Mexico to see my Mom and Dad-------My mom looked the same to me,,,a little older-----My father looked,,,,older too but not like a monster---Well we finally took a walk that did not involve the wood shed,,and we were gone from the house for most of the day----we forgave each other------I can still see, and hear him when he told me that, out of all the children that he had (11-that lived--4 died) that he never worried about me---he knew that i would always be ok,,,,and that he was very proud of me. He even showed me the American Legion Building, and went with me to have a cpl of beers---(damn--no bud but had a similar one) with me----he was still a cheapskate and i did all the buying(actually i insisted) I met a cple of people that were from Canada,,,they were very nice---we talked about our diff political views ---he told me that he was happy with the universal health ins,,he had ---but was not happy with the wait time---had to go to chicago one for an emergency..

I am a much happier person now that I have learned to forgive myself and my father----A cpl of the people that I have come in contact with (3-ex gang members also) have told me that they are much happier after the forgave themselves-they call me once in a while,,you can fell the confidence in their voices----makes me feel-----Once again Wrote this in the hopes that someone out there can forgive them selves----no one can other that you and that mirror---you don't have to get nekid ---but if you don't cry real tears----you are just b s ing your self----try it again-----sorry for the long----long rant-------if you all want to blame some one blame Bethy---she makes me talk, and talk and----Bethy- lots of hugs :-))))))))

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office
to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for

realized I had left my wallet at home.

I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have
to go home and come back later.
The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'.

So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She
said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she
    processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my

How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, 'This is better than we thought!--- The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, mor subtle, more elegant? Instead thy say, No, no, no, my god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way. Valles Caldera is the biggest super volcano you've never heard of. It sits just above the bomb labs at Los Alamos , tucked in between there and the Colorado line. Los Alamos is on the right side of the map.
You turn in the front gate at the Labs follow the road across their campus, and you start a long climb up above Los Alamos. As you get up on the side of the mountain, the mesa where the bomb labs are spreads out below. Like Look Out Mountain above Denver, or the Flat Irons above Boulder.

As you climb the outside of the caldera the road cuts have bands of black obsidian 10 to 12 feet thick. Pure black glass. Best arrow head material ever made. Then at the top, the road follows the rim of the caldera. Very wild country in every way.

  146. i first hoid it from ringer......hawking.....

    from wiki
The most widely known version appears in Stephen Hawking's 1988 book A Brief History of Time, which starts:

“ A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"[1] ”

It is possible that the lady's comment came after Russell's 1927 lecture Why I Am Not a Christian. In it, while discounting the First Cause argument intended to be a proof of God's existence, Russell comments:

“ If everything must have a cause, then God must have a cause. If there can be anything without a cause, it may just as well be the world as God, so that there cannot be any validity in that argument. It is exactly of the same nature as the Hindu's view, that the world rested upon an elephant and the elephant rested upon a tortoise; and when they said, "How about the tortoise?" the Indian said, "Suppose we change the subject."

Baca Ranch - This is what was left of a series Spanish land grants in southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico. The Baca family owned most of that big fat mountain I put up the other day. I never researched them as much as I should have, but there's one hell of a story there.

  183. Maria Arana said a mouthful. I would like to tweak her article by saying that, while some people need to give her article special attention, there are plenty who already know what she's talking about.

After growing up in the 50's and 60's in the midwest, and finally settling in California in the 90's, I have become increasingly flummoxed at identifying ethnic "divisions", in that Asians and Hispanics and Native Americans are indistinguishable, and for very good reason.

In fact, the son of a very good friend married a Japanese woman. They have a daughter who "looks" very Japanese, except that she looks like her caucasian father especially about the eyes. Her Asian eyes are the spitting image of her white-bread dad's.

After the last census I saw a report on the news about college students who have formed 'clubs' for those whose ancestry is so mixed they don't know how to identify themselves on applications. I find this quite amusing and like to imagine the consternation among racists the world around - they obviously don't understand the facts of life.

Personally I like the variety of skin and hair colors, but have to admit that it's probably good that one day we'll all be tan. I've even identified the specific color of tan that I would choose, but hey - it doesn't really matter, does it ,as long as we stop killing each other.

  185. Jack - no, I doubt it will stop the killing, but it might slow it down. At least there will be one fewer reason for the killing, and that's a possible starting point.

  205. Going to post this before key pad eats it up

    Jesus-Cont--

It was only after the disappearance of Jesus' body form the tomb that his apparent lack of messianic power came to be understood. A number of disciples began to have visions, which made hem realize hat the usual test of messiahship-victory ---did not apply to Jesus. Inspired by their visions, they took the important but not entirely unprecedented step of arguing that Jesus death didn't prove he was another false messiah, rather, it proved that God had provided the Jews with another climactic opportunity to show themselves worthy of the covenant. Jesus would return if people repented for doubting him and asked God's forgiveness. There is no reason to suppose that this reinterpretation of the significance of Jesus'death led at once to rejection of the military and political import of his messiahship. Much evidence supports the view argued persuasively by Professor Brandon to expect a messiah who would overthrow Rome and make Jerusaem the capital of the Holy Jewish Empire. At the outset of he Acts of Apostles, which is Lukes account of what happened after Jesus killed , the political significance of jesus' return is uppermost in the minds of the Apostles. The first question they put to the risen Jesus is: "Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel" Another New Testament source, the Book of Revelations, depicts the returning Jesus as a many_crowned rider on a white horse who judges and makes war, who has eyes as "a flame of fire", wears a garment "dipped in blood", and rules the nation with "a rod of iron,," and who returns to "tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty".

There is also some convergent evidence on this point from the Dead Sea Scrolls. I said a moment ago that the idea of messiah returning form the dead was not unprecedented . The Dead Sea Scrolls refer to a "teacher of righteousness" who is killed by his enemies but returns to fulfill the messianic task. Like the Quamranites, the first Jewish Christians organized themselves into a commune while awaiting the return of their “teacher of righteousness/” The acts if the Apostles' states-------All that believed were together and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them among all, according as any man had need.....Neither was there any among them that lacked, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things sold and laid them down at the apostles' feet

It is of considerable interest that the Dead Sea Scrolls contain prescriptions for establishing communities of penitent Jews in the cities to be organized along he same communistic lines. This is additional evidence that the Quamran militants and the Jewish Christians were either responding in similar ways to similar conditions or were actually aspects or branches of one and the same military-messianic movement. As i indicated at the beginning of this chapter . The image of Jesus as the peaceful messiah was probably not perfected until after the fall of Jerusalem. During the interval between Jesus' death and the writing of the first gospel, the ground-work for a cult of peaceful messianism was laid by Paul. But those for whom Jesus was primarily a Jewish military-messianic redeemer dominated the movement throughout the period of expanding guerrilla activity leading up to the confrontation of 68 a.d. The practical setting in which the gospels were written-gospels which depict a purely peaceful and universal messiah-was the after math of the unsuccessful Jewish war against Rome. A purely peaceful messiah became a practical necessity when the generals who had just defeated the Jewish messianic revolutionaries-Vespasian and Titus-became the rulers of the Roman Empire. Before that defeat, it had been a practical necessity for the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem to remain loyal to Judaism. After that defeat, the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem could no linger dominate the Christian communities in other parts of the empire, least of all those Christians who lived in Rome at the sufferance of Vespasian and Titus. In the aftermath of the unsuccessful messianic war, it quickly became a practical necessity for Christians to deny that their cult had arisen out of the Jewish belief in a messiah who was going to topple the Roman Empire.

The Jerusalem commune was led by a trumvirate called “the pillars” in the acts of the Apostles, consisting of James, Peter, and John. Among these, James, identified by Paul las “the Lord's Brother ((precise genealogical connection unknown) soon emerged as the preeminent figure. It was James. It was to Paul's advantage, given his overseas constituency, to underplay the privileged role to be allocated to the children of Israel in the Holy Jewish Empire, It was also to his advantage to ignore the worldly military and political components in Jesus' messianic mission. But Paul's ecumenical innovations created a strategic problem that he was never able to solve. Inevitably it brought him into deeper conflict with James and the Jerusalem communards, since the survival of the Jerusalem Christians depended on their ability to maintain their standings as bona-fide Jewish patriots. In order to survive amid the various factions involved in the escalating war with Rome, it was essential that James continue to worship in the Jerusalem temple and that his followers maintain an image of devotion to Jewish law. Their faith in Jahweh's covenant had been increased, not diminished, by their belief that Jesus would soon reappear.

Sturge- Sorry to hear of your troubles, I hope you are all right and still have a roof over your head.

Just finished watching Fred Claus- love Vince Vaughn. Anyways, they finished the movie with Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Last week when we were listing our favorite songs, that instantly bring one to another place. I thought of listing that song and then changed my mind- Somewhere over the rainbow by Kamakawiwo'ole?! Everyone knows Judy Garland owns that song. Well, they only played a few lines at the end of the movie but those few lines immediately brought me to a mindset filled with a tender loveliness, sweetness and hopefulness. So I'm adding that to my previous list. Kamakawio'ole? Go ahead laugh but I'm sticking with my story!

  213. all's right with the world again. the match is on!

""We can't allow events around the world to deter us, to be afraid to play." He is clearly desperate for England to return and the ECB would then be well placed to use the enhanced goodwill between the two boards.

Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of the ICC, yesterday called for England's tour to continue. Whatever the make-up of the England team that returns to India they are likely to be greeted as heroes. The country is desperate not to become like Pakistan, which has not hosted international cricket for a year."

  216. Hey Patd, I do love that song. "or the thread before... lost in the threads of time." sure happens. Every time I've seen a recipe and didn't have the time to add it to my TM recipe file,it takes me a couple of hours to go back to find it later!
