The tally late Wednesday was 132,196 to 131,382, with an estimated 30,000 ballots remaining to be counted, some on Friday and some next week."

Thousands of Colombians have taken part in violent protests to demand the return of money invested in disreputable financial schemes.
In some cities, police used batons and tear gas to control angry investors.
Protesters took on riot police and rampaged through city centres as a series of pyramid schemes collapsed across the country.

Patsi,
I haven't wanted a gov job since 1974, when a convention failed to choose me as their candidate. That gave the other guy the joy of trying to run away from richard nixon, while trying to run for the House. 1974 was not a nice year for republican candidates, as nixon hung onto them like the tar baby. Kind of like 2006.
Anywhat, if Big Brother babybush wants to waste the taxpayers' dollars digging up my name, so be it. I'm a sick old man who isn't afraid of the torturers' dogs. Like John Hancock, I'm happy to defy the tyrant.

Yet, here’s what Palin tells Van Susteren:
"It [Alaska] is not like other states where perhaps the oil company actually owns all the resources underground and they're the ones that solely benefit from development. Here in Alaska we partner with the oil industry.

What you need to keep in mind is that buying up toxic assets was the raison d’être of the Paulson plan. It's why Congress gave him the $700 billion. It's what the TARP (the Troubled Asset Relief Program) mentioned above refers to. He had to have it he said or the financial system would collapse. Even at the time he was warned by many that it was a supremely bad idea, and after kicking it around for nearly two months, he now agrees but makes it sound like he had questions about it from the beginning. He didn’t. This typifies the Paulson style: absolute confidence coupled with a refusal to address or even acknowledge core problems. He dithers, gets it wrong, and even when he stumbles or is pushed in the right direction he embraces a solution that is totally inadequate. In other words, Paulson is very much part of the problem, not part of the solution. His leadership wastes time and money we do not have.

There is no bias in the quote , Palin thinks that Alaska is different, it's not. Oil companies don't own land, or the minerals under that land. They lease it, and pay royalties on the production.
"Is it too much to ask that our leaders understand the fundamentals of oil leasing, taxing and ownership, both in Alaska and the rest of the country?"

mornin' all.
Well, I see Alaska is supplying us with topics of conversation again. Palin, of course, shows she's an idiot again. Interesting definitionof partnership - you (oil company) pay taxes and royalties to the state for oil (or gas or coal for that matter) taken from state land, and you pay taxes on oil (or gas or coal for that matter) taken from private land, and that's different from other states, where you pay taxes and royalties to the state for oil (or gas or coal for that matter) taken from state land, and you pay taxes on oil (or gas or coal for that matter) taken from private land. But wait, that sounds the same - and it is.Oh, I see, Alaska gives its residents CHECKS from the taxes and royalties paid to the stae. NOW I see. And she wants to be president, criticizing all those socialists? Good god.
And let's hope Ted "I paid every bill I got (wink, wink)" Stevens continues to fall behind Begich. I just hope Begich doesn't have buddies in the construction business who've renovated his house. too.

Leasing and taxing are two different sources of revenue and are dependent on who owns the land (more properly the mineral rights). If the land is private, the lease is between the landowner and teh mineral co., who pays royallties and/or lease payments to the owner and taxes to the state. If the land is public, the state (fed or state, depending on whose land it is) gets all three sources of payment, depending upon how the lease is structured. e.g. companies enter into leases that they never drill on, and pay only lease payments to the owner, drill on it and they pay the lease payments plus royalties to the owner and taxes to the state on the minerals they take out. States often offset the royalties and taxes against the lease payments for their own land. Alaska's biggest difference is in the amount of oil producing land owned by the state and federal governments.

Try Texas, or Oklahoma. The oil in the ground is almost all privately owned.

In Alaska they chose to do the stupid, and short sighted thing. They chose to give everybody a check every year from oil royalties. In Texas, money from oil production on state lands was diverted to the Permanent University Fund. That money built 2 things :
The University of Texas
Texas A&M
( Later on this fund was opened up to other schools. )
Now most of those fields are depleted, but Texas has 2 engines of growth that won't be depleted.
The University of Texas has a talking oil well. Santa Rita #1, the discovery there made the school very very rich. The recording used to say, " Hi I'm Santa Rita #1 ......" . and it would tell the story of the find.
Never walk past it at 3 in the morning when you're really stoned.

I'm not arguing that oil isn't on private lands, I'm arguing that oil companies don't buy that land, as Palin seems to think. You lease it, you deplete it, and you move on.
That's why oil companies have guys called a "Land Man" . He goes and leases the prospect.
The best advice I ever got was from an old "Land Man"

Anon, that may be the case in Texas, but here in the land of Consol, Peabody and Pennzoil, in addition to the leases like you reference - here those are with landowners who would not sell their minerals outright - the companies went through several decades of acquisition where they sent the land men out with severance deeds and purchased all the minerals under the surface, so they actually do own the oil, coal and gas. Even where the companies own the minerals, most of the severance deeds made the minerals subject to royaltiy payments to the surface owner when the minerals are extracted. As you might expect, there are more than a few disputes between surface owners and mineral owners over the extraction of the minerals the companies own or lease. A few years back I was involved in a case where a gas company cleared 12 acres of a 90 acre "farm" (i.e. woods with a house in them) to put 2 gas wells in and service an existing 3rd well. One of the roads they put in - dirt, of course - had a 200' cleared corridor - it looked like they were clearing to put a runway in.

I set the scenario of a 3 way battle to control the poor scraps left by the bush crime family and the prisoner:
1. palin will battle the huckster for control of all the Christian Right's clueless myrmidons, an ever increasing number of whom are 'going walkabout.'
The huckster wins this contest because their god tells them that a woman should not be 'the head.' The huckster knows his only chance to be 'the head' will depend upon having a running mate with sound credentials from one of the other 2 wings of the party.
Therefore sarah gets thrown under the bus.
2. tim pawlenty, aka Governor Potholes Aplenty, will rassle with willard romney for the heartless and souless of the Mammonist wing of the party. romney has an advantage in being rich as Croesus, and being very attractive to the party members who hate Mexicans. Unfortunately, for him, he is also a Latter Day Saint, and therefore hated by Protestants bigots. Pawlenty's advantage is his Catholic apostacy (now Methodist like babybushcheney), boyish goodlooks, hockey credentials, and an utterly ruthless ambition.
3. The bloodthirsty neoconnunist conquerors of Iraq, Afghanistan, and American Airports have Julie Annie to lead them - despite his embarrassing red dress and untidy sex life. If Hadley or Bolton could gain some name-recognition, one of them might be able to loosen Julie Annie's grip on this particular savage horde. newsmax is the key to winning that name recognition, so the candidate who throws the most prostitutes across dick morris' and compamy's path will probably win.

Posted by: Anon | November 13, 2008 9:57 AM
A world famous icthyologist, Weldon Eou, converted to the PETA philosophy recently, and then suddenly died of a heart attack. The scientist's last will and testament left his vast collection of sea creatures to his only child, Amy. The trouble was that all the fish had been released into the lake, including a swarm of dangerous morays, which began to propagate at a popular swimming beach. The local authorities immediately demanded that Amy drop everything and 'fix' the problem created by her icthyologist father. Fixing would have been difficult enough had Amy not been 34 weeks pregnant and about to release her own, personal swarm.
The moral of the story is, "Eou picked a fine time to leave me loose eels."

Mr. Obama made a lot of promises. People from both the left and the right are going to be watching very carefully to see if he delivers. It appears that the economy is going to trump everything else and if he doesn't get that moving his entire agenda will be in trouble.
That said, he does have the excellent excuse that every time things don't work out as planned, he can blame the failed policies of George Bush. They screwed things up so bad that it is going to take more time than expected to fix everything.

You're missing the point on the MSNBC vetting story. The issue isn't Palin. It's the press and their vetting process. It consisted entirely of receiving and e-mail from someone they considered reputable.
Any pragmatic individual would see this as just another significant failing of the press. The fact that you both don't have an issue speaks volumes.

The vetting -- or not -- of stories is what I was talking about yesterday. Some fool throws a story out there and a bunch of fools buy it, and suddenly, the truth matters not. It disgusts me whether it's BS thrown at a Democrat OR a Republican. Because as a people we just keep getting dumber.

"What's sarah palin's take on the vital Harry Potter issue ?"
And that story is one of the BS ones to which I refer. The accusation was that in 1996 Palin tried to get about a hundred books banned, including:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling
Never mind that the first Harry Potter book was not published until 1997.

jax, I get the impression that the fact that Palin was the victim was more important to you than the fact that the story was bogus. And speaking of speaking volumes, the fact that you're calling on only the "progressive" media outlet to issue the correction for a story it repeated after the "conservative" media outlet failed to vet speaks volumes. I'm not aware of any instance where one media outlet issued a retraction for a story broken by another media outlet who got it wrong when the 2nd outlet was using the first as their source fot the story. I expect that Hannity will also call on MSNBC to issue a retraction on H&C tonight.

I put most of the Palin-stories in the same category as the Obama-is-a-Muslim crap.
If she really wanted to capitalize on her position now, she really would follow Aimee Semple McPherson's lead, and start a TV evangelistic church. She'd be a media star, end up a gazillionaire, and still have political clout.
But I'd like to see her stay and keep the Republicans split up.

PALIN POLITICAL BIO
(for immediate release)
Sarah Palin was the warm-hearted but tough-minded reform Mayor of the booming metropolis of Wasilla, a gleaming city near the Russian border. As Mayor, Palin completely reorganized government operations, creating a more humane, but remarkably less intrusive city. By intelligently designing city departments, Palin was able to cut taxes by 89 %.
As Governor of the great state of Alaska, Palin has had a larger palette on which to display her vast talents. in the 23 months since Palin (Guv, as her admirers lovingly address her) took office school children's test scores have risen 53% while crime has dropped to a 223 year low, and the once endangered polar bear has made a great comeback, now that the Alaska's Democrats have all sent to prison.

And I still think she should become a television evangelist. Serious bucks. She could then outfit the poorly dressed members of the RNC.

I thought the Palin interview (Greta's) was interesting.
When Greta asked her about eating moose and caribou, Palin gave her rationale as something like, "We have a choice of importing beef that's been fed hormones and treated with antibiotics, or harvesting a local natural resource that is thoughtfully and sustainably managed." Also, when talking about killing of wolves, she said that was required to control the number of predators competing for the food resource.
Things are all relative. By that token, I would have been right there helping Bethy with her owl.
She made good sense.
I remember when the animal rights people caused enough fuss that the government stopped using wolf fur on the hoods of our parkas. It was replaced with some synthetic that was really inferior in use to the animal pelt. The G.I. lost in that exchange.

Jax, oh, and your point about "Fox, MSN, CNN what's the difference" is true enough with respect to the lack of vetting charge. But you're assigning blame to one of them and diverting the blame from the one most deserving of blame with "You're missing the point on the MSNBC vetting story." If you want to blame the media, blame the media. If you want to blame the approrpriate upstream outlet in this instance, blame Fox. When I criticize Hannity, I'm criticizing Hannity, not every political commentator out there. When I intend to criticize all of them, I try to make that clear by referring to them as a group. Same for actual news media. If reading what you wrote as you wrote it and taking your meaning from your words is groupthink, I plead guilty.

Puhleeze. Of course that isn't going to happen. People are running out of stuff to write about.
But even more egregious, the photo shows fans and press clogging the girls school in Chicago and turning it into a zoo. Just sickening. I'll bet at some point Michelle Obama lands on the press like a mother eagle if they don't give her daughters some space.

The whole wolf/predator question is such a hot button. I despise the idea of hunting the wolves down, but I also understand some of the ranchers issues. And I (unfortunately) saw a newborn colt they killed and started to eat....Love coyotes, love horses. A problem.

Don't you remember that South Park, Jamie? They said they could no longer kill for sport, they had to "thin out the population". Besides, if humans could use that rationale on each other... there'd be some serious trouble. I have talked to deer hunters. Asked them why they were gonna go out and kill a defenseless animal. They said if they didn't thin out the population, a lot of the deer would starve because there wouldn't be enough food for the deer. BTW, rifle season starts here on the 15th. Conflation -
Conflation occurs when the identities of two or more individuals, concepts, or places, sharing some characteristics of one another, become confused until there seems to be only a single identity.
Item #1 -
The original story -
Cameron tells Chicago Tribune columnist Phil Rosenthal, "The people who put this out, and it's senior McCain staff, are now in the cross hairs themselves for attacking the running mate, which by proxy means attacking the ticket they were trying to elect."
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/fnc/carl_cameron_talksand_so_does_martin_eisenstadt_100412.asp
Item #2 -
The secondary story -
Instead, the duo behind the character that caused MSNBC's David Shuster to report, albeit temporarily, a supposed source of Carl Cameron's story about Gov. Sarah Palin are Eitan Gorlin and Dan Mirvish, two filmmakers who have created an elaborate hoax that has lasted for more than a year.

Corey,
Unlike the wolves, human hunters don't thin out the weakest of a herd. They use their man made weapons to go after the strongest (most points)
If hunters used their skill the same way that other predators do, I wouldn't have a problem with them, particularly if they ate the meat.
It is the beautiful head of the multi point buck hanging on the wall that makes me want to turn the gun on the human and mount their heads.

Obama not eligible ... NC Secretary of State, North Carolina Board of Elections, NC Electoral College, November 7, 2008, Class Action Lawsuit, Support and defend Constitution
"There are questions as to where Mr. Obama was actually born, whether in the United States or abroad, and if his birth was subsequently registered in Hawaii. There are further questions regarding Mr. Obama’s United States citizenship, if he ever held such, being expatriated, and his failure to regain his citizenship by taking the oath of allegiance once he turned eighteen (18) years of age. There are additional questions regarding Mr. Obama’s multi-citizenships with foreign countries, which he may still maintain. To date, Mr. Obama has refused to prove he is qualified under the U.S. Constitution and eligible to run for the office of President of the United States despite requests and recent opportunities to do so in Federal Court."

Jamie, I know a lot of deer hunters. Many of the do eat their kill. Be it venison jerky or eating it like other meats. I often told hunters, "Go out there with a switchblade and kill the animal. Then, I'll be impressed." My Uncle Larry killed a deer many years ago and had the head mounted. He had it hung on the wall at their house. When I was little, I thought it was cool. I would stand on a small step ladder/stool and pet the head of it. I called him "Buck". I never really thought much about anything else. How or why it had been killed. I just know that I have grown up and met a lot of people who hunt. I don't really get involved in telling them that I think it's cruel. I just don't have it in me to be a hunter. But, that's probably because my Dad never hunted, nor took me hunting. My Uncles hunted and they took their sons hunting.

JACKSON, Wyo. -- Preliminary results of a study by a University of Montana graduate student suggest that lead bullets may be poisoning grizzly bears in the Yellowstone ecosystem.
Tom Rogers sampled blood from 13 grizzlies during hunting season.
He found that nearly half had elevated levels of lead, possibly because the bears had eaten lead bullet fragments in big-game carcasses left behind by hunters.

Still baffled on the bailout.
So, if the credit swaps AIG issued speculate on GM's ability to repay debt, and if the gov't has bailed out AIG, why does the gov't still need to bail out GM? Isn't GM still covered if the gov't keeps AIG from going belly up?

they also both vote Democratic and have master's degrees.....
the notion that deer hunting is an activity mostly done by slack-jawed uneducated Republicans is sooooo much BS.....

It really isn't the hunting that bothers me simply because I know if I had to kill my own food, I would become an instant vegetarian. At least hunters get out there and do it for themselves.
I just wish they would follow the rules of nature and take out the slowest, weakest and oldest, so that the herds would prosper.
Shooting from helicopters with high powered weapons and scopes does strike me as being unfair.
At least be on foot and give the animals a chance to shoot back. :-)
Of course, when some jogger from a exurban McMansion gets taken out by a mountain lion, I tend to root for the lion.

GORDO,
The NC lawsuit is frivolous. Voters in general elections select State Electors not presidential candidates, despite the fact that ballots name the candidates rather than the electors. Electors can vote for whomever they please. The states have no power to compel Electors to vote, or not vote, for any particular candidate.
Yet even if Obama were a Martian, the Biden part of the jugate ballot still makes the ticket viable. For example, dead people are also debarred from serving as president, yet if a presidential candidate were to die before the election, the vp candidate would be considered to have assumed the position of presidential candidate. So, even if you were right, Senator Biden would be the President-Elect.
You lose again. Watching you try to stop Obama is like watching Wiley E. Coyote try to stop Roadrunner.

It makes a lot more sense for an animal to pick out weakest of the herd. It's a lot safer for them. I guess it's kinda like fishing. You never see anyone show a picture of themselves holding up a 3" long fish and saying, "Sure, this fish was only 3" long, but it put up a hell of a fight!" Jamie, you watched "Coupling" on BBC right? You remember the dinner episode at Susan and Steve's place. Jane brought her therapist with her. During dinner, Jane cut herself a piece of lamb and said, "If you like animals...you'll LOVE lamb!" My Dad said he saw his Dad kill a chicken when he was little, that's why he never ate chicken. I agree with you Jamie, you know when a camper camps in bear country and gets attacked by a bear, whose fault is that??

I had an uncle -- the WW2 pilot -- who was a big hunter. he lived in Idaho...hunted bear, deer, elk, geese, whatever. He did have it all dressed and either ate it or gave it to people.
But in his later years he moved to a big house on a lake. A flock of Canadian Geese showed up at the lake every year. He started recognizing them, named them, and they ate from his hands. He never hunted again. And he once told my aunt that he would probably shoot anyone that he saw shooting at "his" geese.

"Signs and symptoms in children
The signs and symptoms of lead poisoning in children are nonspecific and may include:
Irritability
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
Sluggishness
Abdominal pain
Vomiting
Constipation
Unusual paleness (pallor) from anemia
Learning difficulties
Signs and symptoms in adults
Although children are primarily at risk, lead poisoning is also dangerous to adults. Signs and symptoms of lead poisoning in adults may include:
Pain, numbness or tingling of the extremities
Muscular weakness
Headache
Abdominal pain
Memory loss
Mood disorders
Reduced sperm count, abnormal sperm "
I'd say the symptoms of lead poisoning were more specific in the carcases the bears ate.

The great Alaskan ranch debate ;-0
Reminds me of a joke.
An Alaskan and a Texan met in a bar.
The Texan ask the Alaskan what he did and the Alaskan said "I'm a rancher"
How big " ask the Texan
"40 acres. What do you do ?" said the Alaskan
"Oh I'm a rancher to", Said the Texan, "in fact if I get into my pickup and drive all day I might reach the end of my property"
The Alaskan looked at him for a minute the shook his head.
"I can sympathize, I used to have a pickup like that but I sold the sumbitch."

I hope when Obama becomes President, the White House will make people like Cheney, Bush, Tony Fratto, et al... testify under oath over illegal activities in the executive branch. These people have a lot to answer for.... Unfortunately I think the Exec branch would not want to set up such a precedent as every administration could find itself under investigation from the new-coming one.

XR, forget frivolous - that complaint is EMBARASSING. Recycled speculation is not the best basis for a lawsuit - too m any if, thens. A lawyer could face sanctions. I don't know a bout a Lt. Col., USAFR (ret.) who files In Pro per, (and sui juris just in case the judge wasn't sure after reading in pro per) although I think this is appropriate: "The words "in propria persona" or "in pro per" are typed where normally it would say "attorney for plaintiff." Judges sometimes warn a party "in propria persona" of the old adage that "anyone who represents himself in court has a fool for a client and an ass for an attorney."

As a mass that is a cancer on the earth, there is nothing wrong with them that a really good plague wouldn't cure.

What fools these mortals be.
Once upon a time, long long ago, a well-heeled, spoiled, raging alcoholic of a client decided that he was innocent of assault and property damage by virtue of having been stoned out of his mind at the time.
We tried to talk sense into him, but in medias res, he canned us, and told the judge that he'd represent himself. The judge quipped that the phrase should be pronounced, 'improper.' He wasn't about to let the accused make "chop sui juris" of himself and then appeal, claiming 'improper' representation. The bench would appoint an attorney.
The now former client threw a fit; we were all in it together. So the exasperated judge had the guy removed for a few days to allow him time to dry out and think the matter over more clearlyx.
Later, the now convict didn't want to pay for "the services he hadn't used." I had the sheriff seize his late model Caddy and auction it to pay our couple hundred dollar fee.

Jamie,
I'm sure that medical science will eventually find a way to relieve your case of kittens. Then, you will once again be able to fight and defend yourself against .
There is something fishy about the argument that predators make herds healthy and strong, except insofar as they may take prey that carry communicable diseases. Predation does not much alter the mix of weak and strong or smart and stupid, except across thusands of years. Severe weather does a much better job, by slaying individuals that hog the most scarce resources, thus preventing stunting and infertility. Iow, bad weather takes the biggest honkin' bulls.
I suspect that wildlife conservators came up with the 'healthy herd' story to justify spending public money on the big bad wolf. If weapons manufacturers can make zillions by replacing perfectly adequate firearms with the new camouflaged weapons, then zoololgists can fleece the same hunters by making them believe they'll shoot an improved race of goats if only they'll stop treating puma as varmints, and set aside permanent puma habitat.

year zero to 1800 A.D. First Billion
1800 to 1900 Second Billion
1900 to 1950 Third Billion
1950 to Present in the neighborhood of 7 Billion
If that isn't a cancercous growth, I don't know what is.
It is estimated that if every single person on the planet had the lifestyle that people in US take for granted, the carrying capacity for food and water is around 1950 population levels.
Science may come up with solutions, but people aren't really all that great about long term solutions. In this matter, crisis management is probably not a great idea.

Of interesting historical note: Palin was a student at North Idaho Community College and took one or more classes in Political Science from a graduate school acquaintance of mine. When questioned about her, he said, "I don't even know who she is and she certainly wasn't a standout student or I would have remembered her." Moral of the story: You've really got to pay attention to the C students sitting in the back row. One C student president was enough!

Champ,
You are absolutely right. At least at this time, human beings do not have the power to "destroy the earth". That would take something along the lines of a massive meteor impact that threw us out of orbit and into the path of something the size of Jupiter.
OTOH, I do have grandchildren and while I will be long gone, I would hope that they would live in a well ordered society and wouldn't be starving, warring over water, and suffering from skin cancers and blindness. I rather like them.

SoetorObama's "HIDDEN" Past ?
------------------------------------------
"Did President-elect Barack Hussein Obama commit a federal crime in September of this year? Or did he never actually register and, instead, did friends of his in the Chicago federal records center, which maintains the official copy of his alleged Selective Service registration commit the crime for him?
... the release of Obama's draft registration and an accompanying document, posted below, raises more questions than it answers. And it shows many signs of fraud, not to mention putting the lie to Obama's claim that he registered for the draft in June 1979, before it was required by law.
Document Location Number Indicates Obama Selective Service Form was Created in 2008"

Traders Bet on $30 Crude Oil as OPEC Plans Talks on Output Cut
By Margot Habiby
Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Oil traders made their biggest bet yet that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will fail to prevent crude prices from plunging below $30 a barrel.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aK5RcomuMimw&refer=us

I hope they are having fun as governing is a very serious job. As for Lieberman, there is a saying, that you are either with me or against me and Lieberman has proven that he is against Barack Obama and everything the Dems stand for. You do not keep your enemies close where they have a greater advantage to stab you in the back. Makes no sense!
Palin is quickly making a "verbal record" for future fact-checkers with these whirlwind interviews she is particpating in. And unfotunately for her, her ambition is bigger than her talent. She is like someone pursuing a singing career who cannot sing. Let Palin burn her self out as she is quickly wearing out the welcome mat!

The irish accompaniment with potato soup is soda bread:
4 cups flour
11/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 cups buttermilk
Preheat oven to 375. Grease 8-9 inch cake or pie pan. Mix together dry ingredients, add buttermilk and stir with fork until it holds together. Knead on a lightly floured surface for about 30 secs., then pat into pan. With a sharp knife slash a cross (celtic cross or whatever you want) across the top. Bake 45-50 minutes, until nicely browned.
Cheap and quick. I make about 15 loaves every St. Paddy's day in just a couple of hours.

My Grandmother saw Geronimo in Arkansas city Kansas when she was a girl. It would have been the early 1900's. They brought him in a cage. She described what she remembered. And she remembered the fierce look on his face and his eyes.
After she passed on I was in college taking a class in the history of the American west and did a little research. What she saw as a little girl was most likely a wild west show. Even Geronimo yields to the inevitable

Many of them encourage feasts, celebrations, commemorations, and remind us to be grateful, kind, and chipper, etc. Other rules tell us not to have sex with our children or sacrifice them, or cheat people, worship race, beasts, carvings, people, or money, or . Almost all of it is now considered common sense, although it wasn't so common 3,500 years ago. Athenians and Romans were still sacrificing people to rocks 1,800 years later. Germans, Boers, and Hutus were still worshipping race 3,500 years later.
Thank u , but these are not the laws that i had in mind---there were 300 before any of the bible was written,,1000 yrs before?
--Who wrote the bible?? 39 books in all( human interference stopped very many more from being added---they picked and chose which ones) ---the Tora was written by the hand of Moses--but dictated by God--don't know how this can be true since it was written by many scribes ?/--in the 5 books of Moses there are many contradictory passages suggesting that the identity of the first writers are diff that later ones---if he was the author of deuteronomy-how can he write of his own death?? had to be written by his successor Joshua. the other laws of common sense were laws before ---Actually i think that the bible was written by men for men---God told Abraham to kill his only son issac he was going too until an angel appeared and stopped him--it was only a test--he passed.
Later on in the bilbe 2 angles appear at a home, and demands the death of the daughter of the father be put to death God has requested this from him----he gets a knock on his door and, the father offers the 2 angles sex with the men at the door(wtf the angles were male) they say no, they want the life of his daughter---he tell her,,she says OH well OK if god want me to die,,,but let me go into the mountains to make my self ready for him--some time goes by then she comes back and the 2 angles appear again, they won't take not for an answer and take the life of the daughter, i think that they burned her,,,,,this is moral????? your other points about greed, sex, and all, not have sex with our children---call the vatican,,,lots of sex with children,,,same thing with bible thumping fathers that molest their own,,,lots more in the bible that is gender biased, a whole lot,,,will be talking about the bible a lot.thanks
Bethboo is 100% on the money---there should by only one ( rule ) thing to guide us all----Remember the golden rule-----it is a very simple thing to understand----all religions, all greed , etc, etc, just gets in the way---we understand this intellectually ---but very few feel it emotionally, and practice it???

My grandfather saw Geronimo, too, back in the late 1800's, and told us. We loved Tonto so much we were enthralled. We begged grandpa to tell us about ti, and all he said was that Geronimo was "a mean-looking son-of-a-bitch." I later saw the pictures of the poor man and understood what grandpa said.
But then, what would you want or expect him to look like? A proud old man who lost the fight to protect his
way of life and his people, being paraded around in front of the enemy to be stared at?
Jamie - I agree about humanity being a cancer on the earth. There's nothing inherently evil re cancer - it's just that it crowds out other life forms, and the first words that come to mind are 'rain forest.'
I have a feeling that we are learning a lot from studying cancer. A lot of deadly plants are life-saving in small doses. Cell proliferation of cancers just might help us understand other cells - whatdya bet?

Patsi,
If she wants it, she would probably do it for two years, be 63 retire to a very high powered speaking schedule, book contract, and think tank or her alma mater as a professor ... lots of influence, good works, and oodles and oodles of money.

I hope Hillary is not Sec State. I don't think Obama will accept any help from her or Bill except for her work in the Senate - he can't afford to. He has to show that he can do it himself, especially without help from a woman.

I have to get this off my chest cos i found it again--i constantly fight with people about the following
Contrary to popular view----The fact that the united states was not founded as a christian nation was early stated in the terms of a treaty with Tripoli, drafted in 1796 under George Washington, and signed by John Adams in 1797
"As the Government of the united states of america is not, in any sense, founded on the christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of musselmen; and as the said states never have entered into any war act of hostility against any mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the existing between the two countries..

Jamie - I understand your point and am glad people here do watch KO, cuz you all keep me somewhat up-to-date, but I myself don't see how his material is good.
Everything about him is suspect now to me. I'm actually 'afraid' to even watch Rachel. I admire her and respect her, but I have no reason to expect her to do anything but continue the primary.
I don't want to hear anymore about how the dems are superior, and anyone who doesn't buy into their line is stupid and/or evil.
Between them, KO and Rachel blasted my tv screen with machine gun fire against everyone but Obama.
Those are images I doubt will ever go away for me.
I also think it's better for everyone that she stay out of Obama's administration.
Solar - HA! I figured that would shock some people. I don't usually put things like that on paper. Obviously, KO is a flash point for me, and I've just now been thinking that I'll have to control my reactions. I don't think I bring it up and am sure I don't even think about KO and how disgusted I am with him. It's just when someone else mentions him that I speak out and that's really dumb of me - gonna work on that. Anyway, I'm glad I put a spark in your day.

Your story doesn't ring a bell. Would you please cite the book so I can look it up ? Thanks in advance.
The number of books in the Bible varies widely by religion, denomination, and sect. The stories can be much different - also according to religion, denomination, or sect. I never heard or read a story about angels demanding the death of a gal child. Maybe this is some bizarre cult Bible.

I think you may be misreading the term "nursing father" in the bible. It is a problem in translation. A more accurate reading would be foster father as in Esther's relationship to her uncle since she had no parents.
Also, as a matter of medicine, it was acceptable for a woman to allow actual nursing by an honored family member who was ill and there is even a modern reference to this in Grapes of Wrath where Sharona allows a starving man to nurse.
Sharona is a version of "Rose of Sharon" and a throwback to the biblical reference.
Any more questions ask Tylenol. This is her territory.

Could this be backwards. There is the story of the crowd demanding the angels and Lot refusing them and offering his daughters instead. This is the one that is sometimes used by the bible thumpers against homosexuality.
Anyway, take your pick for every injunction for something you can almost always find and opposite order. Either way, God gets PO'd
Sticking to the Golden Rule is probably the best idea.

Lot is the one whose daughters got him drunk so they could get pregnant by him after they have fled Sodom and their mother was turned into a tower of salt.

Jamie,
Yes. Lot is so opposed to men futtering with angels that he offers his daughter. The sodomites reject her, the lucky kid.
Next, the Angels defend their virginity by zapping all the sodomites with their magic rays. Siiiizzzzzle.
It's a ripping yarn, with the moral being never attempt to rape an angel, or you'll get burned.

If you don't have the time to make Irish Soda Bread, try Beer Bread:
2 cups all purpose self-rising flour
3 tablespoons sugar
1 12-ounce can of beer
Melted butter or margarine
Gently mix flour, sugar and beer until just blended. Turn into 9x5x3 loaf pan. Bake at 375 (metal pan) or 350 (glass pan) for 20-25 minutes, until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.
Drink another can of beer while waiting for it to bake.
When the bread is done, drizzle with butter or margarine.
Turn the bread out on a rack to cool a bit.
Or make Pumpkin Cornbread (recipe to come later).

The group at Nicea decided which of all the books floating around should be allowed into the "official" bible. Since this was 300 something AD you can imagine that there were a lot of scrolls and bits of stories in every town in the Roman empire.
They dumped all the Gnostic gospels that they felt didn't conform to accepted dogma at the time. All the ones that allowed women equal power with men in the church got deep sixed
Then Luther came along more than a century later and threw out a few of the books.that gave powers to priests that he didn't like. On top of that there was a German translation so that people could read it for themselves rather than taking the priests word about the Latin which was translated from the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic.
Then there was the English translation thanks to Henry VIII having the hots for Annie. Then the Scots got into the game with the poetic King James version that then got updated to the cold blah text of the modern bibles.
All in all that particular book has been through the mill so often it is a wonder any of it makes sense.

lot is similar ---but not a very good example of righteousness
lots 2 daughters make a brief reappearance in the story, after their mother was turned into a pillar of salt, they lived with their father in a cave up a mountain, Starved of male company, they decided to make their father drunk and copulate with him, Lot was beyond noticing when his older daughter arrived in his bed or when she left m, but he was no too drunk to impregnate her. The next night the two daughters agreed it was the younger ones turn, again lot was too drunk to notice, and he impregnated her too (genesis 19:31-6) if this dysfunctional family was the best sodom had to offer by way of morals(which is my original argument ---what morals are in the bible??) some might begin to feel a certain sympathy with god and his judicial brimstone???---then this in Judges 19: 23-4--again the misogynistic ethos comes through, loud and clear. where a lot turned his daughter a maiden and a priest concubine over to a mob where they raped her all night in the am she was dead------my whole point to this is that the bible is against women as a whole------it was written for men by men,,,i will find the story,,it is similar.

Solar and Jamie,
These are very old stories about ancient people who were still discovering and developing the basics of right, wrong the hard way. The earliest stories were first written at least 1700 years old about occurences that transpired 2,100 years before that. For example, Aramaic wasn't even invented in Lot's day. And Hebrew may not yet have split from Canaanitish. This is really really old.
I don't recognize the legitimacy of Nicaea. Those folks didn't know Hebrew or Aramaic well enough to recognize a decent translation, let alone make one of their own. On top of that, they adopted outlandish new books and promoted the development of a myriad of theologies and violent disunities.

Also, the Jesus people have become Christians by the time of Nicaea. The Romans have thoroughly infiltrated and co-opted the mainline Christian Church, turning it into an instrument for the exercise of Imperial Power abroad, and strict social control at home. By this time, Jesus would hardly have been able to recognize himself or his work in the corporate doctrines.

AMERCANS TO STANKY HANK: “IT’S THE FORECLOSURES STUPID!”
There's something rotten at Treasury.....and it's pretty obvious Hank Paulson is it.
A month and change ago, he's screaming “The sky is falling. It’s the end of civilization as we know it. Recession, Depession, dogs and cats will be living together! Mass market meltdown means mayhem and madness” US taxpayers must pony up 700 Billion to help purchase “illiquid assets” ASAP. Yes, Hank and only Hank can define the undefinable and buy “it” and this will save us from a Foreclosure crisis.
Well it's mid November, and the banking genuises that helped get us into this mess by not covering their bets are now on their way out the door with our money, showing no interest helping homeowners.
It’s a foreclosure crisis stupid! Stop the foreclosures, end the crisis.
Stanky Hank tried originally to pull off the greatest bank heist in the history of the world with 3 pages of “legislation” that said “Gimme all your money and don’t call anyone or the Economy gets it”. Well, Congress stepped in with a more substantial oversight scheme but no real rules about where the money should go. Only Congress forgot to appoint someone to do the damned oversight!
Yesterday Skank was able to announce a “change” in the Big Heist. Those “illquid assets” he promised to buy? Not buying. No longer interested in buying. And there’s only $60 Billion left because Skank decided to use the money to buy bank stocks and finance their mergers and acquisitions, and of course, pay the same CEOs who drove their companies to the brink. Zero of the bailout money has gone to refinancing mortgages.
Foreclosed homes? Not interested. Struggling homeowners? Not interested. Struggling automakers? Not interested. Kool Aid drinking CEOs who pronounce massive growth and profit? Step right up to the Taxpayer Trough o’Cash. Help yourself. If we run out we’ll go get more. Eat up!
Meanwhile America is looking like one giant blighted community of unwashed masses yearning to breathe free.
Skank is not being honest.
Fact is, we have suffered and continue to suffer the tragic fallout of a decades old "trickle down" myth. Groupthink that says the answer to every problem MUST start at the top, because those at the top MUST be the smartest, most innovative and thus they MUST be given the most to work with. You and I are apparently not smart enough to articulate or innovate our way out of a paper bag.
Even you begin to think that to become Treasury secretary, or the CEO of General Motors, or an insurance executive at AIG you must have sealed parchment and an eerie ability to put a killer Power Point presentation together. You do, but you also need the common sense to know that as the grassroots go, so goes your business. When we are broke they go down. When they are broke we CREATE a new reality. And that is what they’re terrified of. Hence the enormous problems they create and the dishonest desire to solve problems.
We have been spoon fed a groupthink. One that says they are better at this than you. It’s wrong and inaccurate. Truly just a façade to keep us at bay.
Mix in government folks and you got shit soup at the soup kitchen.
While the auto industry meltdown has nothing to do with bad economy and much more to do with making and marketing gas guzzling SUVs in a time when people would like flex fuel cars, or electric cars, or diesel engines, it is the same Groupthink in their Boardrooms. A bunch of men who continually fail upwards. If Detroit wants to innovate their way out of bankruptcy, start listening to a guy (or girl) who works on his car every weekend in his garage! Trade in all of these hand tailored parrots of Industry for Joe The Mechanic!
I’ll take the Captain of a 28 foot sailboat over the Captain of the Titanic anyday. And if we’re buying the company we get to PICK.

mr. crete,
Well, that was pretty offensive of you. And preposterous, to boot.
If Christianity was so much more gentle, how is it that Christian Europeans were still practicing mass human sacrifice in the 1940s across Poland, Hungary, and Germany ? Add Yugoslavia and Rwanda (with clergy and nuns taking part in the carnage) through the 1990s, and Central Africa today. A generation of children recently had their arms and legs lopped off for this kinder gentler god of yours. The Lord's Resistance Army. There has been no more murderous ideology in the history of this planet than the Apostate Paul's.

Be careful what for what you wish, xrep!
Some of those "laws of moses" command genocide. That's pretty murderous. Islam, from what I understand, calls for the execution of willing infidels. Not so nice, either. Jesus was a pacifist. Say what you will about the errant ways of 'His" followers, but he himself (if you believe he even existed) advocated love and forgiveness. He was somewhat of an egoist, I concede that.
From what I've read, Solar, some theorize the emperor Constantine complied what we know as the Bible at the Council of Nicea. You can google it, but it seems that you're more familiar with these topics than you let on.

Good morning, just wanted to clarify that Irish Soda Bread is very easy to make make and one can make it in about 5 minutes. It is indeed categorized as a quick bread.

Hey Patsi, I'm so glad! The dipped PB fudge is pretty good, like a rich Reese's . We have too much fudge around here so my kids generally won't eat any- except the PB fudge which is their favorite and the leftovers of the dipped PB are long gone!
