Trail Mixers Predict Obama 345-193

| | Comments (304)

Averaging the Electoral College predictions submitted by Trail Mix readers, you gave Barack Obama a big win with 345 votes to John McCain's 193 (See Trail Mix Election Predictions).

Is that a landslide? Well, maybe not, considering recent landslides:

  • 1964: Lyndon B. Johnson 486 -- Barry Goldwater 52
  • 1972: Richard Nixon 520 -- George McGovern's 17
  • 1980: Ronald Reagan 489 -- Jimmy Carter 49
  • 1984: Ronald Reagan 525 -- Walter Mondale 13
  • 1988: George H. W. Bush 426 -- Michael Dukakis 111

Greatest Landslides in History

  • 1920 - greatest percentage point margin in the popular vote (Harding 60.3% to Cox 34.1%).
  • 1936 - greatest electoral vote difference between winner and opponent (Roosevelt 523 to Landon 8).
  • 1964 - highest percentage for winner (Lyndon Johnson 61.1%).
  • 1984 - highest number of electoral votes (Reagan 525).

By the way, George Washington was the only president to win the unanimous support of the Electoral College (sorry Corey). Thanks to Jamie for managing our predictions.

I almost feel compelled to watch "Countdown" on Monday to see KO's reaction, but since it was all about him, he'll probably take it as a compliment.

The voter-share market is currently at Obama -- 53%, McCain -- 46.5% HOWEVER, the markets have been trending slightly closer to each other for the last 4 days.

  13. there's books that teach you about yourself, and there's books which teach you about the world......the best one I ever read on the "myself" project was WALDO by Robert Heinlein.......it's ok science fiction the first time around, but then with each re-reading it assumes along the way all the auras of Socrates, Ghandi, Kurt Vonnegut, Nietzsche, Bertie Russell, and Jackie Gleason.
The books I read growing up which taught about the world and you, yourself, also in the bargain, were THE FREDDY BOOKS......by Walter Brooks......talking farm animals.......Freddy the Pig wrote poetry......Jinx the cat......all the animals talked and only Farmer Jones could hear them......they went on adventures all over the country.....kind of a precursur to the muppets.........

If anyone here has kids or grandkids to whom they read, I heartily and whole-foodedly recommend THE FREDDY BOOKS by Walter Brooks.

  16. FREDDY DISCOVERED BY THE NEW YORK TIMES

The following article appeared in the May 22, 1994 New York Times Book Review and was written by Adam Hochschild.

That Paragon of Porkers: Remembering Freddy the Pig

The moral center of my childhood universe, the place where good and evil, friendship and treachery, honesty and humbug were defined most clearly, was not church, not school and not the Boy Scouts. It was the Bean Farm.

The Bean Farm, as all right-thinking children of my generation knew, was the upstate New York home of Freddy the Pig and his fellow animals. They were the subject of 26 books by Walter R. Brooks, a New York advertising man and a staff writer for the New Yorker, that appeared between 1927 and Brooks's death in 1958, One of Brooks's many triumphs of tone was that his human characters were surprised, but only mildly surprised, that the animals talked. Mr. Bean, whose farm they lived on, barely said a word, so he appeared the unusual one.

Brooks had many admirers, from my fifth-grade classmates to the mighty Lionel Trilling, who called the books "delightful." Other loyalists have claimed Freddy as the ancestor of more famous literary pigs such as those in George Orwell's "Animal Farm" (1945). In fact, in "Freddy the Politician" (first published in 1939 as "Wiggins for President" ), the animals foil a crafty gang of woodpeckers who try to seize control of the Bean Farm by making extravagant promises - a revolving door for the henhouses, cat-proof apartments for the rats and so on. In his book "Fairy Tales and After," the critic Roger Sale pointed out that :Freddy the Politician: "not only preceded Orwell's work but is a good deal more careful with its materials and, for that matter, shrewder about its politics…The actions emerge much less mechanically than do Orwell's."

Freddy's readers have called him a porcine prince, a pig of many parts, a paragon of porkers, a Renaissance pig. As the problems he faces require, he is by turns a cowboy, a balloonist, a magician, a campaign manager, a pilot, and a detective. But he is the most unheroic of heroes: he oversleeps, daydreams, eats too much and, when not suffering from writer's block, writes flowery poetry for all occasions. His tail uncurls when he gets scared. Although lazy, he accomplishes a lot, because "when a lazy person once really gets started doing things, it's easier to keep on than it is to stop."

Walter R. Brooks's gentle genius shines even brighter in his villains. Take, for example, Watson P. Condiment, the comic book magnate, who has six big houses, 15 big cars and a yacht. A blustery blackmailer, he is "a tall thin man who always looked as if he had a stomach ache. That was because he did have a stomach ache." But the animals can thwart Mr. Condiment's evil plans, because "people who read comic books will believe almost anything."

Almost all the other villains foiled by Freddy are representatives of the Establishment. The bank president, Mr. Weezer, who appears in many of the books, has glasses that fall off anytime anyone mentions a sum over $10. General Grimm is "short, stocky and red-faced and looked as if his uniform was too tight for him but nobody had better mention it." Mr. Gridley, the high school principal "never came close to anybody he was talking to but always stood off several yards and shouted."

The pompous, timid Senator Blunder flees the scene when pursued by the animals, because "should I be struck down, into what hands would fall the reins of the ship of state?" The fabulously wealthy Margarine family tears up farmers' fields with fox hunts in "Freddy Rides Again." (The fox, of course, is a friend of Freddy's, and the Margarine's are undone.) And, until he is exposed by the animals, a conniving real estate man pretends he is a ghost and haunts houses he wants the occupants to sell.

It seems almost impossible to get away from the presidential campaign these days. The candidates are arguing on the radio in your car, plopping down in your living room on the TV, and even popping up on your computer.

For all that, you can thank William Jennings Bryan and William Howard Taft. Those two kicked off the era of the mass-media presidential campaign a century ago. And the modern parallels are uncanny.

  48. "I think the idea of McCain being a "maverick" is a facade... Just my humble opinion. "

Tom -- I think McCain was, at one point, something of a maverick -- if being a maverick means being willing to buck his own party. But when Bush came in, people seemed to lose all semblance of objectivity. He was thought to be the Great Hope of Conservatism. They slobbered over him just long enough for a lot of evil shit to go down.

And that's what we all have to stop doing -- slobbering over candidates and shrugging off accountability. And that includes Barack Obama, who is thought to be the Great Hope of Liberalism.

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | November 2, 2008 7:44 AM

  49. Brain - Yes, I agree - I am very disappointed in the current position - The Campaign that has redefined Barack is to the point the most spectacular Marketing second only to a few others in World History!

The Barack facts are an easy target and less then 48 hours to full voting... It is most likely to late.

The talking heads are just as much to blame as the Entertainers taking the seats in the MSM

Posted by: Ping Pong Author Profile Page | November 2, 2008 7:49 AM

  50. But at the end of the day do not place blame anywhere but with what you can control and the home team.

Posted by: Ping Pong Author Profile Page | November 2, 2008 7:52 AM

  51. Barack has very few substantive points to count on.

And his campaign is a contradiction of his actual history. He is a Liberal but his campaign has been allowed to control the flow and language. McCain never found a voice to match.

    To many distractions to facts.

Barack is going to capitalize on a few factors.

Craig – so do not write on Wednesday that if he wins, that this is a resounding movement. It is much more a rejection – which is the primary campaign theme – then a movement towards what???? Which Barack?

Posted by: Ping Pong Author Profile Page | November 2, 2008 7:57 AM

Many, many of those cubicles (shoes, sweaters, etc), as well as rows of labeled clothes racks, huge circular hammocks for throwing down discarded costumes while choosing what to take on the bus.

  94. really good article from yesterday's guardian. warm, moving and full of hope.

Me, my son and Obama: one father's story
    Gary Younge
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/nov/01/obama-race-black-americans-equality

also different view on some things:

"To express such scepticism before many Obama supporters was to be accused of cynicism. The true believers do not just want you to drink the Kool Aid. They demand that you chug it.

The people my scepticism vexed most were white liberals. Obama had become prey to the soft bigotry of unreasonable expectations. Describing the crowd's reaction to him in Rockford, Illinois, Time's Joe Klein noted: "The African Americans tend to be fairly reserved ... The white people, by contrast, are out of control." They had found a black politician they felt comfortable with, and wanted him to be everything: Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy, a griot, president, vice-president, motherhood and apple pie. They prattled on about a post-racial America as though the Jena Six never happened and Sean Bell, a unarmed black man from Queens who was riddled with bullets on his wedding day, was still alive."

    Posted by: patd | November 2, 2008 10:24 AM

  95. had to look up "griot" at wiki:
"A griot .... is a West African poet, praise singer, and wandering musician, considered a repository of oral tradition. As such they are sometimes also called bards....Although they are popularly known as 'praise singers', griots may also use their vocal expertise for gossip, satire, or political comment."
however, don't know if that definition is what younge meant when he listed it in above linked article.

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- An ex-convict who thought he was being robbed gunned down a 12-year-old trick-or-treater, spraying nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside his home after hearing a knock on the door, police said Saturday.

Quentin Patrick, 22, is accused of killing 12-year-old T.J. Darrisaw on Friday night. T.J.'s 9-year-old brother, Ahmadre Darrisaw, and their father, Freddie Grinnell, were injured but were released after being treated at a hospital.

The family attended a Halloween celebration in downtown Sumter, 45 miles east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick's house because the porch light was on, police said. Another sibling was with them, but wasn't hurt.

Police said at least two of the boys were wearing ghoulish masks when they knocked on the door. The boys' mother and a toddler stayed in the car nearby.

  125. Solar, you're welcom and another thought:
Unless you're expecting really cold weather you can wait until the first sign of cool dew on your lawn and pick your tomatoes then.
Depending on the type, rather than picking them, cut the vine and hang them if you can (by tying a sting onto the vines) --this provides good air flow. If unable to then just place in a dark spot but not in a bag (air is important to slow maturation. Have a great day. Going to a soccer game.

I just pick them before there is a killing frost. Usually by flashlight that night, lol.

Just leave them out or store them in the basement or cool back room and they will ripen
Some recomend wrapping them in newspaper to keeep them from drying out and getting wrinkled.

You can pickle the small ones< I use a dill pickle recipe. Larger one the size of a walnut can be cut in half..

Wash tomatoes and pack in sterile jars. Add several garlic buds. (May
also add strips of celery, pepper, carrots.) Boil the following five minutes:

    2 qt. water
    1 qt. vinegar
    1 c. canning salt
    2 tbsp. dill seed

Pour brine over tomatoes. This makes enough brine for 6-7 quarts tomatoes. Add fresh dill if available. Ready to serve in six weeks.

  131. Just got this email from the Al Franken campaign. Sorry for the length:

    Dear Friend,

It has been a long campaign, and a tough one. Norm Coleman has sunk to historic depths to smear Al Franken and make this election about something, anything other than his own record and the issues that affect the people of Minnesota.

But what Norm Coleman did yesterday was something else entirely, and you need to know the truth.

Here's the story: A Republican businessman in Texas by the name of Paul McKim filed a lawsuit this week against Nasser Kazeminy. Kazeminy is one of Norm Coleman's biggest donors and closest friends - he's the same man who flew Coleman on his private jet to vacations in the Bahamas and Paris.

Only a small portion of the lawsuit has anything to do with Norm Coleman - but the part that does is incredibly serious. McKim's sworn affidavit, since corroborated by a second lawsuit, describes an effort to funnel $100,000 to Senator Coleman.

So are the allegations true? We don't know. In fact, we at the campaign didn't know a thing about this lawsuit, had never heard of this company or Paul McKim, until we read about it in the newspaper.

Then came yesterday. Instead of answering these very serious allegations, Norm Coleman released the most dishonest ad of the year, blaming Al for the lawsuit.

That ad is up on TV right now. And it's a despicable lie. Al Franken had nothing to do with this lawsuit.

Norm Coleman, faced with sworn allegations of a conspiracy to funnel him improper payments, is trying to deflect blame by lying about Al Franken in a TV ad. No matter what candidate you support or what party you belong to, it is a sad day.

With just a couple of days left, the only way we can stop him is with the truth. After all, that's what Al's always been about: letting the truth carry the day.

But we need your help. Please forward this email to everyone you know. And please know that no matter what happens in this election, you can be proud that you were part of this campaign.

Thank you for all you do,

    Andy Barr
    Al Franken for Senate

  140. Religious left rallies for Democrats

By JEANNE CUMMINGS | 11/2/08 11:21 AM EST
The new push is part of a wider effort by Democrats to strengthen their voter turnout in key states like Ohio.

Ohio’s progressive religious leaders, who largely sat out the 2004 presidential election, have mobilized now to counter the political clout of their conservative and evangelical brethren.

“We had been silent too long,” said the Rev. Tim Ahrens, senior pastor at First Church in Columbus, who helped found We Believe Ohio, a multidenominational organization that promotes social justice and other progressive causes.

The new activism is part of a wider effort by Democrats to strengthen their voter turnout operation and broaden its reach since the bitter 2004 loss to President Bush that was caused, in part, by the mobilization of conservative religious leaders in the Buckeye State.

  142. This one pisses me off...

    Obama avoids same-sex marriage fight

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1108/15183.html

    [snip]

Some Obama supporters wish the Democratic presidential hopeful would speak out more forcefully against the initiative and perhaps even issue a statement before Election Day. Immediately after the measure qualified for the ballot in June, the Illinois senator wrote a wide-ranging letter to San Francisco's Alice B. Toklas Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Democratic Club in which he said he opposed "the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California constitution" and similar moves in other states.

Since then, however, Obama has not made any bold pronouncements or urged supporters to specifically vote no on 8. "It's been frustrating," says one gay Obama supporter and fundraiser.

Some attribute this to simple electoral politics: the Democratic nominee needn't concentrate on California because it's not a battleground state — the Field Poll has him ahead in the Golden State by as much as 22 points. And, Obama and his advisers are mindful of the 2004 presidential race, when same-sex marriage bills on 11 state ballots were credited with galvanizing the Republican base and helping George W. Bush win reelection over his Democratic challenger. "Gay marriage was an overwhelming factor in the defeat of John Kerry," former President Bill Clinton told an audience a week after the last election.

The silence has emboldened supporters of Proposition 8 to send a mailer with a picture of Obama with an accurate quote in which he states his opposition to gay marriage to inaccurately suggest that he favors the proposed ban on it. [snip]

Obama should speak out against Prop 8. It is the moral high ground to do so. On this, I am unhappy with Obama's lukewarm reaction.

  143. If SoetorObama did not follow the proper procedure after returning to HI from Indonesia - he has something in common with Auntie Zeituni - both are living in the United States illegally.

He is refusing to authorize the release of certified hardcopy documents for a reason - his "hidden" past. There appears to be no way (not yet) to get at these documents through the legal system. The media refuses to demand that he prove his Constitutional eligibility for POTUS.

Unknowingly, the American people may be voting for a man who is a citizen of Indonesia, not America. And who has been using a name (BHO) since his teens that is not his legal name -- Barry Soetoro.

it looks a little slow now----been thinking about that bridge they build (is it built?) in minn, they finished it in record time of 12-14 months----the process was very impressive, as soon as they finished with the very first section of the blue prints, that part went into construction,,,,first the footing etc,,,no approval of any section of construction,,,the city could have been the ones drawing the plans but i still have to wonder about the safety of it----i know that they have large computors monitoring stress and all but still i ??? it

i read were they offered the contractor a bonus( 25 m ) for finishing ahead of time,,another concern for me?? hope the contractor had supervision 24 hrs per day-----i know that when a contractor sees a bonus of 25 m it is tempting to take short cuts-------they also sign an agreement of responsibility for shoddy work----they fined for repairs------in most if not all cases,,the contractor owns another co. that makes the repairs way above the fine that they received in the first place----at first i was impressed, but now i hope its safe in a few years?????? have any thoughts?.

The devil is in the details. When California had the freeway collapse due to an earthquake, a similar contract with bonus for rapid completion was bid out. The builder collected on the bonus and it has been functioning well, but within the contract were safety, strength, and inspection details agreed to up front.

Your bridge may be a similar situation but you would need to put eyeballs on the contract to be sure.

McCain and Palin on ENERGY independence they kind of favor keeping Coal and maybe creating more jobs by Expanding Clean Coal Production...Just sayin Realtiy bites.

Pres Bush had 8 yrs to bring up and reverse any law that pres Clinton passed,,that's what a potus should do, is to study what the last administrations have done and then change, what they think would hurt the country. 2nd pres reagan took credit for the berlin wall, knowing that other administrations also had a hand in it, but the republicans still say that he brought it down by himself,,so this is bushes mess, if we go by those standards,,,,,but the financial situation is just one of many things wrong today,,,whose fault are our other problems, from 1995 to the present is a long time to ignore??Clinton had a republican congress to help him pass laws,,,and lastly i think that both the D's and the R's are to blame,,,i hope that it is going to be diff this time around----thats all us indies, can hope for, but i kinda doubt it.thanks

  244. Obama takes campaign battle to GOP territory

In the final weekend of a long race for the White House, Barack Obama promised to heal America's political divisions while rival John McCain fought to hold on to Republican-leaning states and pledged to score an upset.

For Obama, buoyed by record campaign donations and encouraging poll numbers, it was a time for soaring rhetoric and forays into Republican territory.

"We have a righteous wind at our back," the Democrat said Saturday.

They didn't get the contract and it was a design/ build contract. She did say that she wouldn't have been surprised if the city did bring in a geo tech firm for the site prep work before the other contract was even signed.
She also said it being a design build made it faster as every phase did have to be bid.

  251. Obama, pledges to heal political division: Well I hope he plans on starting with his own party first. Because of him , and The DNC, they managed to do something no other candidate, was ever able to achieve. They managed to tear The Democratic Party, in two. I think it is going to tak alot more than just fancy words, to bring this Party back together. And, I really hope that all these people that are supporting him ie ( Madonna, Matt Damon, Diddy, Ludacris,The Ladies of The View) and others, are the first ones in line to hand over their hard earned money, after all they have much more to tax, alot more than the everyday Joe.

    Posted by: unlikely_burrito Author Profile Page | November 2, 2008 9:12 PM

  261. it was The Democratic Party, that had two candidates, that had around 18 million votes each. The DNC, was the Party, that decided to throw one under the Bus ,for the sake of the other. It was The DNC, that allowed news stations, make comments about HRC,ie (She's a real nutcracker, I have to cross my legs when she comes into the room.) there was many many other sexist comments made, too many to list here. And did nothing to come to her rescue. But, when anyone even looks sideways at Obama, The DNC, comes charging out to his defense. The managed to ruin The Clintons, and then insist, that if Obama loses it is their fault. And Obama, has been caught making some very interesting comments about people, when he thinks they are not listening. AND Obama Supporters, some not all, have been the most hate-filled bunch of people I have ever come across. When I voted for HRC, it was because of who she was, and what she stood for, not because she was a Democrat, after she was no longer in the race, and I along with alot of others voiced our unhappiness, we were told to shut-up and just get over it. Does anyone on this blog, actually believe for one minute, had Obama, been the one not going on, his supporters, would have just gotten over it? So I am really sorry, if I seem bitter, and feel that my voice was not even considered, but this is America, and until it changes, everyone is entitled to their own view points.

I too, casted my primary vote for HIllary. She lost. It stung. But I chose to look at our country and what we needed and who was best suited of those remaining to fulfill that position......certainly when I was for Hillary, I did not agree even remotely with John McCain.....still don't.

My core beliefs didn't change, but my candidate of choice did. You have every right to express your feelings, but maybe take a moment and look at the similarities that Hillary and Barack share, instead of any differences.

Take a peek at the big picture.......I guess that is what I am suggesting.

  264. And the first choice of Change that Obama makes is what? A White Man, Who has beeen a Senator, for longer than even John McCain. So Excuse ME, If I Don't Just GET OVER IT.

    Posted by: Lampe | November 2, 2008 9:27 PM

  265. I've said several times that I didn't believe that there would be a election on November 4th. this year.

Now whether or not there is still does not take away my main premise that Bush will declare Martial Law. Until he steps down on January 20th., 2009 there is still a lot of damage he can do, including Martial Law.

And God forbid the Repug's steal another election or anything should happen to Senator Obama America could very well become the next Iraq.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I still do not see Bush giving the power of the MCA of 2006 to a Democratic President. Not the power to arrest and hold indefinitely without the right to a lawyer or a court hearing to challenge his and the rest of those arrested their detentions.

    Only time will tell.

  268. Lampe - You probably don't know it but many many here, women and men, basically agree with you, and it was a blood bath here for a long time

Those of us who were HRC supporters haven't necessarily got over it (or so it seems, altho I can't really speak for them), but most of us seem to have decided that Obama is the one runningand the one with the chance to keep McCain out of the White House.

My own reason for voting against McCain is to keep the Supreme Court from being an adjunct of the republican party. They have politicized half of the executive branch and could own the Court, and make Rove's dream of a permanent republican majority come true. Roe v Wade would be gone and churches would be able to write laws. I could live with a lot but not that.

So know that you're not alone, but the fight was barbaric as I'm sure you can imagine. Some people you cannot say the truth to.

Posted by: harborwoman Author Profile Page | November 2, 2008 9:37 PM

  275. So your voting against McCain, because of some law that was enacted over 40 years ago? And If a woman, is not considered good enough to run this country, that's okay, as long as she has the right to have an Abortion? I'm sorry, but I consider myself more important then just my reproductive system.

    Posted by: Lampe | November 2, 2008 9:38 PM

  276. I have to think of something larger than hurt feelings.
There is far too much at stake in this country and the world to vote for four more years of George W. Bush and the Republicans. By his own admission Senator McCain says he has voted with Bush 90 % of the time. If you believe the status quo is fine than by all means vote for the man.

Everything in this country is in ruins and a vote for McCain is a vote to keep doing what we are doing and expecting a different result is delusional.

It is true that Obama wasn't my first choice but at this time in our history he is the ONLY choice.

  278. Lampe - I wouldn't call it PRO -OBAMA, but I will say that most of us want him to win.

Basically, we all like to converse and share ideas, and this is a very tense time with the election so close. But there are some here who are not interested in your feelings or ideas - by and large we have learned to skip their posts. Some of us call them Knotheads, and we enjoy the rest here so much that we are willing to pretend they don't exist. Don't give up too soon.

And it's not just because of Roe v Wade - there are decisions to be made in the future, too.

  282. Lampe--

Just some thoughts to you. I know how you felt about Hillary. I don't know if it's possible to have wanted Hillary to win any more than I did. While I did not know her personally, I had been in very close proximity to her several times while she was first lady of Ark. as I do alot of work there in various public events that were attended by the Clintons. I was always impressed by her. She was someone I not only admired but, I felt a kinship with her in many ways. As a professional woman my self having experienced the glass ceiling and all of the nice little jabs that go with it, what Hillary went through in the primary cut me to ribbons. The night of the Indiana primary Hillary knew in her heart where the tide was going, I saw it in her eyes and on Bill's face. I was devastated.

I stopped posting here for a long time, and told myself I would not contribute, nor would I work for the Democratic party ever again. But in the end I have worked harder for Obama than I ever have any other Pres. Candidate, and I have contributed more money to him than anyone before.

The reason is because I look at my ten year old little girl, and I am afraid for her future. I am very concerned about the world that will be left her. I know how important this election is and how devastating ANY more years of republican rule would be. To me it isn't even about me. Or how I feel, or how pissed off and hurt I was. It is about getting a better world for my child, and there is no doubt in my mind which candidate will even try to provide that for her.

Just look in your heart and find out what is important to you. You'll know what's up.

  283. Doubts persist about Obama birth certificate

Considerable evidence still points to candidate's birth in Kenya

"The issue of the authenticity of Obama's original birth certificate is further muddied by communications from Sen. Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro, who has claimed Obama was born in two different Hawaii hospitals.

In a November 2004 interview with the Rainbow Newsletter, Maya told reporters her half-brother Sen. Barack Obama was born on Aug. 4, 1961, at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu; then in February 2008, Maya told reporters for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin that Obama was at the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

Last week in Hawaii, WND retained a top private investigator with extensive FBI training and tasked with visiting both the Queens Medical Center and the Kaliolani Medical Center to investigate claims that Obama birth certificates existed at either hospital.

But the private investigator reported that on Thursday and Friday of last week, sheriff's deputies were stationed at both hospitals to fend off press inquiries about Obama's birth certificate."

Not sure if your comments re: voting because of our reproductive systems and/or rights were directed to me or Bethy, but my decision to vote Obama in large part because I want him to make the next few Supreme Court nominations actually has little to do with Roe v. Wade. It has far more to do with what I hope we will see in the relationship between business and the majority of Americans. The balance right now has swung to favor business over the citizenry in some very negative ways, IMO, and I hate to see that. Business (and I primarily mean BIG business) has a great deal of money, which unfortunately translates into power over the citizenry when you have a government that is willing to sell itself to you for campaign contributions. If McCain goes into the presidency, he will be surrounded by many of the same supporting cast of characters we've seen these past eight years. In a word...gaaaack! They have already appointed SC justices and agency heads who are willing to turn away from the common good and away from science in order to push the wishes of their donor corporate interests. I really, really want to see that come to an end!

  286. I understand your concern, for your little girl, really I do: But, how is her seeing and hearing the things that are being said about HRC, and Gov. Palin, going to make things better for her? Is it fair, for men, to just decide, that a women, is good enough, to be a Senator, or a Mayor, or even a Governor, but she is not good enough to be POTUS. And I think what has really surprised me, more then anything, is the way other women, are talking about them. I've grown-up knowing that alot of men, don't think women, are capable of doing their jobs, but I have never witnesses the nastiness for women before, like I have during this Election. As I women, I am more concerned about how this will look to others, when they see one women, bashing another women, just because she is not what they think she should be. How can we ever expect men to respect us, and level the playing fields, when women, aren't even to respect each other?

  288. PUMA. In the long term, the Chicago phalangists have done more to cause harm to the Democratic Party than anything in recent memory. They've recreated it in an image of the highly structured Republican organizations of the past. I give it four years before it starts collapsing.

I see things developing as a process. Hillary has set a new standard for women and their expectations that is huge. It is always a process of development when you are talking about societal change. Nothing happens overnight. She put the bar high for the next qualified woman. She showed them her grit and spine of steel. I don't think there are many, like her or not, who will take those things away from her.

Notice I said QUALIFIED woman. I do not consider Palin qualified to run for dogcatcher. She is absolutely an insult to Hillary and everything she stood for. Palin should not even be put in the same league as her. I think people make fun of her because she invites it with how she presents herself with all of winking and wholly unprofessional manner in which she conducts herself. There isn't anything to her. I guarantee you that most, if not all of the strong women on this blog, would completely destroy her if we were left in the same room with her for a very long period of time.

Elections are for the most part nasty, like it or not. Look at all the nasty things you read about what candidates are doing to each other. Hillary knows this, and she moved on. Because she still has a future. She will still be around doing her good work. And qualified women everywhere will be looked at a bit different because of her.

  291. Truebeliever...
Funny - I think I would turn it on Barack if only for a 30 min time period with no preconditions. You know the same rules he drives as he thinks he can handle anyone.
So why has he ducked and been unavailable and only spouts the same few points?

Because it is a smart campaign - as the truth of Barack would be very problematic.

We are voting for the President -

I am so happy that the kool-aide has made the rounds and all have forgotten the events -- what a "Movement"

Which Barack are you voting for?

  292. What about JF? I think she set the standard long ago.
And for women to dump on Sarah Palin in the manner of your post -
    Give me a break -
I warn my daughters that the worst enemy to their future is their fellow women

  294. Flatus - I couldn't agree with you more. The machine has grabbed a stranglehold for a while, but it won't last.

ETom - Updates on the Prop 8 campaign:

We are seeing new ads re Prop 8 - a pix of Obama and a statement the he is opposed to Prop 8. Also, a pix of Arnie with a statement of his opposition.

Then it turns out that Steve Young, former Niner qb, has signs in his windows and on his law in opposition to Prop 8. Of course, he's Mormon but recently a big group of Mormons wrote a letter to their church arguing to stop Prop 8. The Youngs also gave $50,000 to the campaign against it. Seeing as how I am a fervent Montana fan and disliker of Young, I can't say I believe he deserves the credit for it as his wife's name is coming up more than his. But if he does deserve the credit, it'll be the first thing I give him credit for. HA - but I do mean it.

The ugly story is that Jeff Kent, former Giant and now Dodger, is apparently saying he's for Prop 8 and gave $,500. When he was a giant, he was a constant agitator of Barry Bonds, also a trouble maker, but Kent openly talked about it, so I'm not surprised he's so small-minded.

Ugly ugly thing from Palo Alto - police chief told her officers that if they saw any AA's, they should have sonsensual contact with them. She says it's not profiling, tho I have no idea how she comes to that conclusion. It's hard to believe.

  295. When we passed the signs for Holland on our way in and out we thought of you and wished you well.

While up north we weren't online, watched only about 5 hours of TV and had a refreshing break from politics as we have no preferred candidate since Hillary lost the primary.

We found there to be about an equal amount of signs and bumber stickers for Obama & McCain wherever we travelled in northern MI but only saw 2 O and 2 Mc stickers on cars on our 1000 mile trip home thru MI, OH, PA, MD, DC and VA. Thought that was unusual compared to other election years.

Here in eastern NC folks in our town who usually have signs in their yards have none this year and I don't see many in the area. Our county is 66% AA and we thought there would be more Obama signs but we've actually seen more McCain signs. Perhaps they didn't supply our county with signs for O as they figured they had the votes without them and they could be better used elsewhere.

    Craig and all posters:

Missed reading all your comments this past month and look forward to seeing where the blog rolls after the election. Whatever the results on Tues. night, (or Wed. or next week or month) I hope all the trailmixers and those who lurk here will enjoy good health, meaningful relationships, financial security, and peace of mind during the next four years and beyond despite politics!

    PS Craig,

May I suggest the State Theater in Traverse City as a place for you to speak. Michael Moore had a lot to do with its renovation and its a site used for his Film Festival there. I think you'd draw a large crowd and have an interesting time visiting the area.

  296. I don't understand how anyone can say Gov. Palin, isn't qualified. She has been a Mayor, and a Governor. What has either Obama, or HRC, done that even comes close to that? She has balanced budgets, ran towns and states, why has Obama ran? And please don't say a good campaign, because we all know Alexrod ran that campaign. So, if your saying Gov. Palin, is not Qualified to be either POTUS, or V.P. then there is no way in HELL, Obama is qualified.

  297. My comment didn't post my first try and somehow when I cut and pasted the first part of my comments didn't copy. Sorry! This is why I don't post more often!

My comment was for Corey - We just got back from a month in MI and spent a lot of time in Traverse City. We brought back 4# of dried black sweet cherries. Read your blog and it seems we travelled a lot of the roads you were on this weekend. Enjoyed hearing about your trip as it brought back pleasant memories.
