Trail Mix Predictor-in-'Chef'

| | Comments (346)

Now that Missouri is finally called, we have a winner -- Our own Trail Mix original regular, Chef Sheila. A former White House staffer turned culinary artist and contributor to The Back Channel, Sheila nailed the Electoral College results long before the election: 365 votes for Barack Obama.

How did she do it?

chefsheila.jpg"OK, my friend, here is the method of my madness: My passion isn't strategy or the horse racing. Mine is the candidate. I get to know as much about a candidate as I can, so I can get a "feel" for how a race will shape up. As you know, I was an Obama supporter from the start (as in his 2004 speech). For the last two years I have watched the campaign's strategy building with each and every week. The last two months I began seeing a trend that cycled up and down on an average of 5 points until the last few weeks. My confidence in Obama's strategy, that people wanted honesty and transparency, and my weekly reading of Fivethirtyeight.com, gave me the confidence that Obama would win somewhere in that number group . . . Now, where's my cherry pie? Of course, what I really wanted was a 15-point spread!!!!  LOL." -- Chef Sheila

Sheila hereby wins permanent bragging rights as the Nostradamus of Trail Mix for Election 2008. Congratulations! . . . and thanks to Jamie for managing our predictions list.

  2. Congratulations, Sheila

    PatD,

You're right that the others won't have to make the same promises, but it's an apples and oranges thing, or maybe it's more appropriate to say: a lion vs. house cats. You could de-claw the house cats, but with the lion you'd better pull some teeth.

Remember this is all rumor, based on gossip from people who either have an agenda, or who are so pathetic that they want to prove how close they are to power.
As is there is nothing we can do about it except to ask

So grab a holt, put the spurs to that beast and give us a loud YeeeeeHaw.

  10. Congrats to Sheila. (So, now can you tell if were the Mayans right? Will the world end in Dec of 2012? If so, Newt & Huckabee can quit worrying about Sarah Palin.)

Congrats to Iceland. The Danes, Swedes, Fins and Norwegians just gave them a multi-billion dollar bailout.

Here's my idea for the auto industry: Fire the top 25 people in management in each company. They probably make more than the rest of the combined workforce. T

hen, replace them with more competent people, if a position actually needs to be filled and isn't superfluous, pay them less and make them accountable. If the company does well, maybe they get a nice bonus.

Last, go to the unions and tell 'em sorry, but....your insurance premiums are gonna go up a bit, your co-pays are gonna go up a bit, you're gonna have to pay a bit more for perscriptions, the pension plan isn't going to be so rich, and, no pay raises but merit-based bonuses just like management.

They don't need a bailout, they need some common sense...or just a greed intervention. That would be interesting: The top management of the "big 3" in Dr. Drew's rehab facility. Oh, the DTs they will have giving up their private jets.

I think Whole Foods pays its top person a max of 400% of what an entry level person makes. It sounds like a lot, but do the math starting with ten bucks an hour...it seems reasonable.

  16. Looks like Obama better claim to be Muslim or he will be facing Jihad! I guess they don't care who's in charge of our country. I have changed my mind on the big 3 bailout. I talked to management about it at work last night. They didn't think it was a good idea. The big 3 need to change, giving them money wouldn't force them to change. They also brought up something I hadn't thought about. When gas was over $4 a gallon, people wanted to buy new cars that got better gas mileage. Now, gas prices have dropped. People don't need to buy more fuel efficient cars now. Also, banks aren't lending money to people right now, so nobody is buying cars for that reason as well. Another problem for the big 3. They did announce that we are going to be getting quarterly bonuses again at work. That was a shocking announcement. Also, today marks my 13th anniversary at work. Time flies.

  20. patsi, need another fix?

here's an old discussion on pirate history by bbc:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A9734682

"A 'pirate' was someone who preyed on ships of every nation. He owed allegiance to no country and worked only for his own profit.

'Privateers' were legally sanctioned pirates. They were commissioned by a government to attack the enemies of that nation. They were often given a document called a Letter of Marque, which was official authorisation to attack enemy ships. Technically a privateer could not be prosecuted as a pirate because he was protected by international law...."

so are these new guys pirates or privateers by bbc's definitions?

Your management is under the belief, a restructured auto industry means more work for them as the big three outsource more of their production. What they forget is once the unions are busted there is no reason to keep the jobs in the US. Send them to China.

  23. Well, we are picking up more business because other suppliers are going under. But, my company is also involved in other things. Batteries and heating and cooling systems. We are more divirsified, not as dependent as suppliers who only deal with car companies. The big 3 outsource a lot of work to suppliers, but if the suppliers start to struggle, somebody has to take over for them. They said our plant in Mexico was doing the same thing to other companies in Mexico.

That sounds good for you. Looks as if your company is well positioned. There is going to be a shakeout in the industry. What ever happens the Auto industry is going to have to reduce production by 20% next from what I've read. So a lot of your competitors won't be there next year.

BTW the reduction will also take place in the dealership end. look for a many empty lots as dealers go out of business.

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 20, 2008 8:39 AM

  29. mornin' all.

Corey - there's good and bad in every bailout - I agree that the Big 3 have to change, but I am not sure that denying the backbone, or what used to be the backbone of our manufacturing industry an infusion of cash that they claim is necessary to survive without filing bankruptcy is the right approach, particularly in light of the unfettered discretion they gave Paulson to aid the financial industry (a colossally stupid mistake). I certainly don't believe that giving them the money they ask for in the form of a loan from money already appropriated for them is the right approach. Understand that if they go the bankruptcy route, the one thing that will not happen is that their creditors, such as your employer, will not be paid dollar for dollar on any outstanding debts owed them, and likely will result in a reduction of services tot he automakers, and a consequent reduction in workforce. Might not happen, but if i was a bettin' man, that would be my bet.

Does Detroit need to change? You bet. Do they need relief from the union contracts that fix their labor costs above the market and make their cars noncompetitive with foreign-procuced cars? That's one way to approach the problem - and for you union supporters out there, bet that will happen - it's a sure thing. But what they really need is management that anticipates consumer wants and responds with products that are appealing and with comparable quality at comparable prices.

Oh, and my best to Uncle Ted. hahahahah

Bumpy Road Ahead for a Traveler
"He has been running toward it for years, maybe his whole adult life, and suddenly he has arrived. And what he discovers is that inside his new cocoon of Secret Service protection, the presidency of the United States is a very lonely job.

.....He has always been on his way elsewhere, in a journey of discovery and self-actualization that may be unmatched in American political history. And now he is at the doorstep of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue....Obama plays on a different stage now, and it's less forgiving.

  36. The Glass Ceiling Holds Strong
"It is time to stop kidding ourselves. This wasn't a breakthrough year for American women in politics. It was a brutal one.

Yet American women are a majority of the population and a majority of the electorate. They earn more than half the bachelor's and master's degrees, a level of educational achievement far exceeding that of women in developing countries. There must be some reason we don't do any better than women in impoverished, rural regions of the world where cultural norms oppress women.

Maybe it is because our culture isn't so different after all."

"Daschle has been able to serve as an Obama campaign adviser because he wasn't registered as a lobbyist, though his firm earned $3.5 million this year lobbying for the health industry.........................

The original Hail to the Chief was set to music by James Sanderson using words by Sir Walter Scott in "The Lady of the Lake" .

The Marine band first played the song to entertain John Quincy Adams, but was first used to introduce James K. Polk. This was suggested by Julia Tyler wife of Polk's predecessor.

Albert Gamse wrote new lyrics for the song though they are seldom sung. In case you want to practice for a sing along:

Hail to the Chief we have chosen for the nation,
Hail to the Chief! We salute him, one and all.
Hail to the Chief, as we pledge cooperation
In proud fulfillment of a great, noble call.

Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,
This you will do, that's our strong, firm belief.

Do you know of one you would suggest, just in case they are looking for names.

I've only met two wonderful black chef's and one was an expert in Louisiana Soul food and the other in French cuisine, but not on the level your talking about.

The soul food guy a hole in the wall kind of building in a huge parking lot in Westwood. It was all take out orders over a counter (You carried your own food as far as the tables set up in the parking lot). Too die for food and and incredible ambience as chaufferued limos parked next to Fords that looked like escapees from destruction derby.

  65. Interesting article Chloe... thanks for posting the link. I personally can't imagine why ANYONE would want that job. Presidents age so quickly in office!

All the Hillary Clinton bashing in the media now is frustrating me. The media attacks the "drama" that surrounds the Clintons, but mostly it is the media that creates it. And I am also a bit frustrated with Hillary, DECIDE ALREADY! It's not helping her image to be "wavering", and I don't think it helps the new administration. She should just say "I accept" or "I respectfully decline" and be done with it.

I was totally for Hillary being SOS, but I am so turned off by the media reporting that I've come to believe she'd do better in the Senate. Working with Ted Kennedy on Universal Health Care would be a wonderful task, and she knows the issue thoroughly. Her past experience would help also, as she will know what pitfalls to avoid...

    Just my thoughts.

  66. ET

Hillary has already tentatively accepted. She can't "formally" accept until a "formal" offer is tendered.
The Clinton's wouldn't have subjected to the vetting unless they thought it was a serious offer that she was willing to accept.

This really is a complete media, commentator, and staff driven rumor mill, and it is disgusting ... another chance for the Clinton haters to load up and fire. I swear there are members of litter rotten that won't be happy until the whole family is six feet under.

It even bothered Chris Matthews last night and that is going some.

  67. I'm off to work. But before I do.

I know from my readings that the Obama's really watch what they eat. Obama does a lot of Meatless meals, although he's not meatless.

I'd say Daniel Young is the best in this country. Most African American Chefs who are not doing just soul food are just too young.

Look for a certified Master Chef like Walter Shieb's (greenbrier fame and Clinton White House Chef) ilke.

But Private Chef, may I have a snack for midnight type, will be a low fat, very healthy signature cook, I bet.

  69. "I personally can't imagine why ANYONE would want that job."

Tom, I couldn't agree with you more.
    ...........................................

I'm curious, and was taking a look to see if I could find what family would be moving to Washington with the Obama's - no luck - but ran across this earlier story (which incorrectly said Michelle:s mother would move into the White House). I was only interested in the part that talked about how much Michelle and Barak had depended on her mother, and how important she is to the girls. I'm not surprised, but it's nice to know.

"Robinson's main job during Barack Obama's two-year-long campaign for the presidency was to make sure the Obamas' young daughters, Malia and Sasha, were taken care of while mom and dad were on the campaign trail. According to a Boston Globe article from early this year, duties included upholding family rules (8:30 p.m. bedtime, healthy food) and getting the girls to the appointments on their daily schedules.... "
    http://newsguru.newsvine.com/_news/2008/11/14/2113006-michelle-obamas-mother-to-move-into-white-house

and written even earlier, this one which talks about other personal family issues:

    First family moving to Washington
"a source involved in the transition also says the Obamas plan to send their daughters to a private school in D.C., maybe Georgetown Day School or Maret School.....Michelle Obama has said being “mom-in-chief” will be her top priority in the White House."

Congrats...at some point i need a tip on how to butterfly a chicken breast in such a way so i can pound it thin and make a proper chicken kiev...

As for the pirates talk...if I were a baseball fan, I would demand that the head pirate be immediate be brought in to run the Pittsburgh Pirates. This way they can sniff a winning record. Otherwise, I would take a couple of cargo ships and load them with radar guided gatling guns that can spray 3K rounds per minute...send them out as bait and just light up every pirate boat that got close.

  72. to the point raised about Sheila as first comenter, that could well be. Sheila was certainly among the first, and such a help in keeping things civil that we dubbed her the Hall Monitor in those days. Wish i could find out for sure. But as longtimers know, i accidentally blasted the archive on our first blog at blogspot, begun in 2005. (This is why we should all be grateful that CQ handles the tech side of this one, instead of me.)

So, like the Bible, we will have to rely on verbal tradition to retell the stories of those fateful early days.

  98. The osso Bucco is in the oven.

Now Bear, POunding chicken breast flat for Kiev.

    1. Two large pieces of plastic wrap. A good mallet with good weight. one side large and one side small grids.

Place the butterflied breast in inbetween the plastic. Don't seal it.

Starting with the large grid of the mallet and in the middle, just let the mallet drop, don't pound and work your way to the outside. If you need more weight just do it in firmer slaps of the mallet or you could tear the chicken.

open the plastic at intervals and then close again so you can let it out for the size of the breast.

Use the smaller grid when you see ridges forming in the meat. don't want to tear.

Ok. That method is called "Paillard".

Chloe, I was also interested in reading about Michelle's mother moving into the White House with them. I can't remember, did Miss Lillian live in the White House when Jimmy Carter was President? Anyway, I digress...

Having had one of the most wonderful grandmas in the world (whom I miss every single day) I think it's awesome that the girls' grandma will live with them. My Gram lived with us pretty much all the time and she provided a lot of stability that was needed in our home. I was always her "shadow", preferring to spend all my time with her instead of my own parents... :-) Thing is, no matter how much I screwed up, she just kept on loving me... I hope the girls have that same sort of love from their Grandmother, and if she is anything like mine is, they will be well protected!

  137. The Real Great Depression
The depression of 1929 is the wrong model for the current economic crisis

    By SCOTT REYNOLDS NELSON

As a historian who works on the 19th century, I have been reading my newspaper with a considerable sense of dread. While many commentators on the recent mortgage and banking crisis have drawn parallels to the Great Depression of 1929, that comparison is not particularly apt. Two years ago, I began research on the Panic of 1873, an event of some interest to my colleagues in American business and labor history but probably unknown to everyone else. But as I turn the crank on the microfilm reader, I have been hearing weird echoes of recent events.

I was just about to add, that the big 3 have to produce a legitamite plan of use for the money as well as a 15 year production plan to convert their cars and plants to a more efficient way of operating, before I'd buy off on that.

......as well as planned pay cuts for all the CEO's, CFO's and any other big bites out of profits.

  189. When I was a lad I loved Ike. However, when I became a man I put away childish illusions. (Pretty good line, eh, SolarCrete ?)

Ike was right to keep Truman's containment policy. He was rightly hostile to Haiti's papa doc/baron samedy, and cool to Argentina's crypto-nazi dictator, juan peron. Ike encouraged the colonial powers to divest themselves of their empires.

Ike wasn't early enough or vocal enough in opposition to the witch-hunting right wing demogogues, like joe mccarthy. He even had one for a running mate.

He blew it in Guatamala, Iran, Suez, Hungary, and Viet Nam.

I'm ambivalent regarding Ike's treatment of Cuba. Fulgencio Batista was a bully and kleptomaniac. The Cosa Nostra used Cuba as a slave plantation, money laundry, and hideout.

49.9 years after the Castros drove unopposed into Havana, dog catchers in the meanest and most isolated village are still selected by the Royal Family, everything that is not illegal is mandatory, and Cuba's Homeland Security is the role model for bushcheneyrumdumbchertoff's Homeland Security.

Under Ike, the DoD secretly inflicted radioactive poisoning on citizens in order to monitor the effects over time. The experiment included dumping radioactive iodine on a Minneapolis grade school and playground. I am unclear about whether Ike had knowledge of this outrage.

Ike increased the amount of rat poop allowed in the flour used to make items like Wonder Bread, Nabisco Crackers, and Twinkies.

I now have difficulty liking Ike.

Tell them: "I'm following the example of President-elect Barack Obama. If he didn't need to produce a birth certificate to establish his eligibility to be president of the United States, why would you require me to produce one to get a lousy driver's license?"

Jackie ran Obama's campaign in Iowa and gets a lot of credit for his win. It didn't hurt that her husband, John, ran Kerry's winning caucus campaign so they already had the organization. Jackie is one class act and will do well at the job...they are lucky to have her.

  263. Supremes to review Barack's citizenship

"A case that challenges President-elect Barack Obama's name on the 2008 election ballot citing questions over his citizenship has been scheduled for a "conference" at the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court's website listed the date for the case brought by Leo C. Donofrio against Nina Wells, the secretary of state in New Jersey, over not only Obama's name on the 2008 election ballot but those of two others, Sen. John McCain and Roger Calero.

If four of the nine justices vote to hear the case in full, oral argument may be scheduled.

The action questions whether any of the three candidates is qualified under the U.S. Constitution's requirement that a president be a "natural-born citizen."

Solar - what a nice thing to say. I lurked for only a short time before I made my first short (HA!) little post, and did so because I quickly decided that the people here were decent and very intelligent and kind.

Our long posts re Mexico were great for me, too, as I had had those thoughts for a long time and nobody I knew was interested in exploring them with me. Then you were there and had real first hand knowledge of the subject - what joy to find someone to talk things over with. I think we all feel that way here, no?

The video of Hitchens being waterboarded was almost too much to watch. He's appalling, but.. He also made a very cogent comment - what does an innocent person do to stop it?

The Prop 8 thing here is about whether it amended the constitution ot just altered it - that kind of legal wrangling. My answer to people who say the people voted and it should stand is :

You don't understand - there are some things we do not vote on. We don't get to vote on denying the Bill of Rights to particular people. That is already decided - it is a given. The majority does not always get to win = that is the law.

Getting one accepted on a direct writ to the You Ess Soopreme Court, to be heard denovo without having a losing verdict in hand from a federal district, then circuit court is a whole 'nuther thang. I probably have better odds of getting pregnant. Nope, wonders never cease. lol

But before anyone gets all excited and such, this is not the be-all, end-all lawsuit. It is just an application for a stay pending the filing and disposition of a petition for a writ of certiorari - can''t tell what it's requesting a stay OF while Donofrio writes and files a petition for a writ of certiorari, which will reveal what he thinks the merits of his case are, but that may be on Lexis or Westlaw. This is just saying something like "oh,please, oh, please stop those people from doing anything while I write something that you might consider." I may mosey over there if I get bored and see if I can find anything.

  286. Jesus cont,

There are very few practical options t choose from. It would be most convenient if the dating of Jesus's minstry was wrong---if it could be shown that Jesus had not been t urge his fellow Jews to love the Romans until after the fall of Jerusalem, But an error of forty years in the conventional chronology of events such as Judas o Gallee's tax revolt of Pontius Pilate's governorship is inconceivable,
Although we cannot be in error about when Jesus spoke, there aare many reasons to suppose that we are in error about what he spoke. A simple practical solution to the questions raised at the close of the previous chapter is that Jesus was mot as peaceful as is commonly believed, and that his actual teachings did not represent a fundamental break with the tradition of Jewis military messianism . A strong pro-zealot bandit and anti-Roman bias probably pervaded his original ministry. The decisive break with the Jewish messianic tradition probably came about only after the fall of Jerusalem. When the original politico-military components in Jesus's teachings were purged by Jewish Christians living in Rome and other cities of the empire as an adaptive response to the Roman victory. That, at least in brief.is the argument that in order to relate the paradozes of peaceful messianism to the conduct of practical human affairs.
Continuity between the original teachings of Jesus and the military-messianic tradition is suggested by the close link that existed between Jesus and John the Baptist. dressed in animal skins and eating nothing but locusts and wild honey , John the Baptist clearly corresponds to the genre of holy men whom Jjosephus describes as wandering about the badlands of the Jjordan Balley, stirring up the peasants and slaves and making trouble for the Rjomans and their Jewish clients. All four Gospels agree that John the B, was the immediate forerunner of Jesus. His mission was to perform the work of Isaiah, to go into the wilderness-the bandit-infested backlands full of caves that echoed with the memories of Jahweh's covenant, and cry out--"Prepare ye the ways of the lord , make his paths straight." (Repent for your sinfulness, recognize your guilt, so that you may at least be rewarded with the promised empire.) John "baptized" Jews who confessed their guilt and were properly penitent, bathing hem in a river or spring to symbolically wash away their sins. According to the gospels, Jesus was the Baptist's most famous penitent. Upon being washed in the Jordan River Jesus embarked on the climactic phase of his life-the period of active preaching that led o his death on the cross. John the B's career replicates the pattern of desert oracles described in the previous chapter. When the crowds around him grew too big, he was taken into custody by the nearest guardian of Roman law and order. This happened to be the puppet king, Herod Antipas, ruler of the part of Palestine east of the Jordan where the vaptist had been mos active.

There is no hint in the gospels that the Baptist might have been arrested because his activities were regarded as a threat ot law and order. The entire poloitco-military dimension is absent. Instead we are told that the Baptist's arrest resulted from his criticism of the marriage between Herod and herodias, the divorced wife of one of Herod's brothers. The story goes on to attribute the Baptist's execution not to any political motive but to Herodias's desire for revenge. Herodias gets her daughter Salome to dance ofr King Herod. The King is so pleased with the performance hat he promises the dancer anything she wants. Salome announces she wants the Baptist's head on a platter, and Herod complies. Herod is said to have been overcome with remorse, just as later on Pontius Pilate is said to have been overcome with remorse at the execution of Jesus. Considering what the Baptist was telling the crowds in the wilderness before he was arrested, the lack of political references and the remorse attributed ot Herod seem most inappropriate. What John preached was a pure military-messianic threat.

My personal favorite quote in the bible---Deuteronony13:1
"Whatever I am now commanding you, you must keep and observe ( I think that with this---God has effectively tied every ones hands -----they can't get away from this one???)

2nd is------Deuteronomy--13;7-11-----If your brother . the son of your father or of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the spouse whom you embrace, or your most intimate friend, tries to secretly seduce you, saying ,"Let us go and serve other gods," unknown to you or your ancestors before you, gods of the peoples surrounding you, whether near you or far away, anywhere throughout the world, you must mot consent, you must not listen, to him, you must show him no pity , you must not spare him or conceal his guilt. No, you must kill him, your hand must strike the first blow in putting him to death and the hands of the rest of the people following..you must put him to death since he has tried to divert you from Yahweh you God

I have asked priest if they know that this is in the bible----they always lie---and say no.

Sakura may be the even more evil twin of renee's kitten.

Her brother Mister is a sedate, mellow and well behaved little gentleman whose motor starts running the instant you look at him.

Sister on the other hand knows that she has an absolutely perfect pretty face, is unbearably cute and knows how to bounce from place to place with adorable grace. This allows her to get away with murder. Open the dryer ... she's in it. Open the dish washer ... she's in it. Sit down and you get a used as a tree (she's the kitten on the head staring upside down in your glasses). Her latest trick, standing on her back legs and reaching up with her front paws to be picked up.

Most of the time I love her to bits except at 3:00 a.m. when she thinks my head is a bump in the oval track she is running for her morning exercise.

  290. If you missed Rachel tonight or even if you didn't, one of her guests Malcolm Gladwell was fascinating. Author of "Outliers, the Story of Success". Previous book, "The Tipping Point".

With all the Clinton as SoS noise, he and Rachel came across as having hung on to their sanity unlike the other yammerers (particularly on the far left bemoaning all the "clinton people appointments"). Obama is secure enough to balance necessary expertise with new ideas and action in order to perform his job well.

  292. Congratulations, Sheila. I might have come up with that number if I had thrown a dart - HA! It's beyond me.

KGC - I just saw yesterday the warning re not burning wood on winter spare the air days. I understand it, but don't remember the law. I must have voted for it, but it was too long ago for me - groan. Is it state-wide and, if so, what about the people who live in the Sierra? Also, does it pertain to fire logs? Gas fireplaces are ok, I know.

But you don't know for sure that she is wavering. You only have a rumor that she is being indecisive. All the yakking about it is starting to remind me of what I disliked about the media love affair with Obama during the campaign and kept me irritated at him and more devoted to her.

  304. I got to think what was said tonight is true, they'll announce HRC after thanksgiving. Given that the Titanic has started to take on more water this week we'll see the treasury pick before then. I'm with everybody though on one point, cable news is sliding more and more into artifice.
    I didn't think that possible.

  306. That was some video. And I have learned how the process of turning a live turkey into dinner starts. The beheading/bleedout funnel.

The advent of supermarkets and mass food production methods have divorced several generation of people from the understanding of where their food comes from, particualarly with respect to meat and poultry.

However without these methods there would be much less food available for people. So my question tonight is, does mass production of food encourage population growth or does it prevent starvation on a mass scale?

  313. WTF ! Turkeys don't vote. In MN, domestic turkeys outnumber dogs. Southerners, Midwesterners, and Westerners all slay their own food. 100,000 deer hunters in MN alone, butcher their own kill.

I know all this because I am only superficially urban and dainty. Hell, I like to clean fish, 'cause it gets me closer to lunch and dinner, and I love both lunch and dinner.

What % of the American public is allergic to the sight of blood ? 2.47 % ? On average, we each watch 624 murders per week on tv (don't quote me please, 'cause I made these #s up. But, in your hearts, you know what I mean), so how can we be squeamish ?

There aren't more than 3 republicans in the NE, and 2 are ME senators, so how can this possibly turkey business possibly hurt Guv Palin ???
