Clinton Would Have Short Record to Defend in a Confirmation Hearing

"Supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to become secretary of state believe she's demonstrated creative thinking on international affairs. ... While Clinton has been a high-wattage star on the international stage since her time as First Lady, she lacks a long resume of foreign-policy successes to accompany her celebrity." -- Adam Graham-Silverman, CQ Politics

  4. Repost from previous thread

don't care how old or new a poster is. I do care about the ambiance of this place.

We all wander around the blogosphere and it is easy to see that they degenerate into places where people do nothing but scream expletives at each other.

Even at its worst here during the primaries, when we lost so many good people, there was still an effort to pull back from the brink. There was no demand for phony togetherness, but rather that we treat each other as adults and try not to say something with your fingers that you wouldn't say to their face if in the same room.

I try to think of us as NPR ehrtr we can present ideas for discussion without letting it degeneratung into a brawl.

Old or new, I would like to see all concerned try to enforce that standard.

Full agreement. I think HIllary will be a wonderful SoS which is why I suggested it when she was passed over on the VP slot.

Sometimes you learn more by watching others do a job than you would if you were doing the job yourself. It gives you a view of the larger picture and the effect actions can have on events.

Her marriage, her friendship with Albright, her personal relationships with heads of State around the world, her time working on foreign affairs in the Senate and most of all her absolute dedication from childhood on to learning everything there is to know about a subject of interest in order to perform well will all contribute to this new service to the nation.

  15. A ----double-bind game is a game with self-contradictory rules, a game doomed to perpetual self-frustration,,,like trying to invent a perpetual motion machine in terms of Newtonian mechanics, or trying to trisect any given angle with a straightedge and compass. The social double-bind game can be phrased in several ways.

The first rule of this game is that it is not a game...everyone must play,,,You must love us...You must go on living...Be yourself,,,but play a consistent and acceptable role,,,,,Control yourself and be natural...Try to be sincere

Essentially, this game is a demand for spontaneous behavior of certain kinds,,Living,,loving, being natural or sincere--all these are spontaneous form of behavior,,they happen---- of the them selves?? like digestion food or growing hair, contrived, and phony atmosphere which everyone deplores--weak and scentless like force flowers and tasteless like forced fruit. ???

That is interesting, patd. Hussein, himself, created a triple bind by his conjuring the belief that he possessed significant stocks of chemical weapons--probably to dissuade further aggression from Iran. That was, of course, the opening that Bush needed for plausibility in the U.N..

Intelligence is almost never certain. That's what Hussein was counting on. By setting stakes so high--virtually unlimited chemical attacks, he created a situation with such a high degree of perceived risk that none of his neighbors wanted to risk war with him.

The U.S. and, subsequently the Security Council, called his bluff and went marching in. Hussein didn't have the wits to realize that it was in his great self-interest to throw open his borders inviting inspection of every site in the country. That would have caused us and the world to realize that the actual threat he posed was illusory.

Had we had perfect intelligence and understood that in the beginning, then probably all this mayhem would have been prevented. That, of course, presupposes someone would have had the courage to speak truth to the emperor.

I've got a book called "101 Myths of the Bible". It shows that many of the stories(myths) from the bible were actually based on myths from Egypt and later on, the Jews Babylonian captures. It's cool 'cos the Egyptian and Babylonian myths are way older than the stories as they are presented in the Bible. Like the story of Noah and the Ark is a 'borrowed' myth.

Several years ago there was a program on a group of mummies from the western deserts of China. They were 3 to 4 thousand years old. The kicker was that they looked like Celts, one guy was 6' 4" with red hair. They had all the traits of a euro background, not Asian. Perfectly preserved , clothes, boots, hair, everything. Just as well as the freeze dried mummies from the top of the Andes.

And once denied, a renewed application is truly a desperate measure the success of which heralds one of the rarest birds in Supreme Court history.

  112. no one around so

    Real Jesus cont.

One mightier than I cometh-he shall baptize you in spirit and fire: his winnowing fan i in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

Was Herod Antipas blind to the connection between the desert oracles and the zealot-bandits? A king whose reign was to last
forty-three years and who was the son of the tyrant bandit-killer Herod the Great could not have been indifferent to the dangers involved in permitting people like John the B, to attract large crowds in the desert. And how could an oracle whose messiah was not related to the zealot-bandit cause attract such large crowds?
The Baptists place in the military -messianic tradition has been clarified as a result of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. These documents were found in a cave near the ruins of an ancient pre-Christian community called Quamran, located in the region where John the baptized Jesus. Quamran itself was a religious commune dedicated, like John the Baptist, to "clearing the path in the wilderness." According to the communes rich and previously unknown sacred literature, the history of the Jews was leading toward and Armageddon in which the Roman Empire would meet its capital in Jerusalem, ruled over by a military messiah descended from a branch of the House of David, mightier than any Caesar yet sen on earth. Led by the "anointed one of Israel." invincible general, commander in chief, the jewish "sons of light" were to go into battle against the Roman "sons of darkness" It would be a war of annihilation. They "will take up the pursuit in order to exterminate the enemy in an eternal annihilation..until he is wiped ou "victory was guaranteed because "as thou hast declared to us from old,. a star shall come forth from Jacob, a sceptre shall rise from Israel" ( the prophecy in the Book of Numbers that was later applied to Bar Kochva).Israel was to be victorious "because as in the past, through thine anointed ones thou hast devoured evil like a blazing torch in a swath of grain...for of old thou has proclaimed that the enemy...shall fall by a sword not of man, and a sword not of man shall devour him."
The Quamranites had the order of battle worked out down to the last detail. They were even ready with a song of victory:

Arise, O Valiant One!-- Lead away They captives, O glorious Man!--DoThy plundering, O valorous One!--Set Thy hand upon the neck of Thine enemies and Thy foot upon the heap of the slain!--Strike the nations Thy enemies and let They sword devour guilty flesh!--Fill the land with glory And Thine inheritance with blessing! A multitude of cattle i Thy pastures, Silver and gold and precious stones in thy palaces!--O Zion, rejoice greatly!--Apear amid shouts of joy, O Jerusalem!--Show youselves, O all you cities of Judah!--Open thy gates forever. For the riches of the nations to enter in! --And let their kings serve thee And let all thy oppressors bow down before thee And let them llick the dust of thy feet!

We know that the Quamranties sent missionaries to act as a vanguard for the Anointed One. Like John the Baptist, these missionaries are said to have eaten locusts and wild honey and dressed in the skins of animals. Like John the Baptist, their task was to make the children of Israel repent. I t can't be proved that they also practiced baptism, but at Quamran itself archaeologists have uncovered extensive ritual bathing facilities. Johns ritual of baptism may very well have been introduced as an abbreviated form of the more extensive ablutions and purificatory rites performed in the communes baths and which in one form or another were long a part of Jewish ideas about spiritual cleanliness.
The point that needs special emphasis here is that the existence of this literature was not even hinted at in the writings of such people as Josephus or the authors of the Christian gospels....Without the the scrolls we would know absolutely nothing about what these militant holy men were up to , because Quamran was destroyed by the Romans in 68 a.d. The communards sealed their sacred library in jars and hid them in nearby caves before the "sons of darkness" swooped down and obliterated the commune. Because they could not have been tampered with during the two thousand years their existence was forgotten, the scrolls now constitute one of the great manuscript sources of information about Judaism in the period immediately prior to, during, and shortly after the time of Christ.

Gail Collins offers this fantasy of a Christmas miracle: For the good of the country, Dick Cheney resigns. Then George Bush resigns. These acts elevate Nancy Pelosi to the presidency until January 20. She immediately implements whatever agenda President-Elect Obama dictates. The Collins fantasy not only delivers immediate action to address the economic crisis, it gives the nation its first female president, if only for a month or so.

KGC - also, do you know about this winter spare the air day? They said last night it was passed in July - huh?
I understand the reason and it's fine but I'd like to know specifics and it seems the media doesn't even know. Is it in Sonoma county? Are fire logs okay? How are supposed to know when one is declared?

Wolverines are supposedly 'extinct' in Yosemite - maybe the entire Sierra, but there have been some sightings which seem to be those same wily critters.

I'm off to a catalogue party - we take the ones we get and use them asa an excuse to sit around the fire and drink champers, eat shrimp, cheese, chips etc. We had to get some good out of all those tings that come in the mail!

No wood fires on those days but other kinds of logs or fuel are ok. Sonoma County is included and I understand they were sending out warnings in Santa Rosa. I'll be curious to see the enforcement in West County because so many people depend on wood for heat.

I don't remember if I answered this or not, about the Christmas lights.
When my wife and I got together she did the white lights only thing. I'm white trash so I do all the color lights I can. I would even have 3 or 4 blowup snow men. lol
    What can I say.
So my wife drew a few lines and takes control of the planning. She is the artist.

We didn't do much last year as she was busy but the year before we went all out.

We did the white Icicle lights along the front roof edge
And some red lights following the path to the house. The wife is a believer in feng shui , so there are few straight lines except the mandatory ones by the city sidewalk. Most of the front is vine covered and there is a 4ft rock wall along the side walk. We put green net lights on the vines and thorough them ran a bunch of blue light strings with some twinkling and other fading in and out and some constant. The blue lights flowed through the green in a big S and at the wall the spilled over looking like a water fall.

It was fun and we will take a couple of weeks adding some here some there. The hard part is getting them all put up after Christmas.

I think you were the James Bond fanatic. If so then thanks for the recomendation. The wife and I went to see it this evening. It was a lot of fun. I had gotten bored with the Bond movies, they seemed to be stuck in a rut. They have revamped the whole franchise. Once more it is fun to go see a Bond flick. Also, very noirish for a bond flick.

My wife and I met when I did volunteer community organising.
I put together several programs around planting flowers, mostly giving people a hand ful of bulbs to plant.
I live in an old imigrant working class neighborhood. It has been changing from Polish/Italian to Mexican/Latin American. Flowers reach them all. I still remember giving a bunch of Mexican men some tulips. And watching them excitedly planting them in the front yard. I expected the women to plant the bulbs but these were migrant laborers who probably weren't even legal. and had left the women back in Mexico

Also, we worked with the police, in a community policing exercise, where they went onto a block where the neighborhood was having trouble with drug houses. The police did strict enforcement of the law and I got to go around and be the good guy passing out flowers. Most people were afraid to do it. I laughed and told them that nobody, not even the meanest drug dealer is going to shoot an old man passing out flowers. They may laugh at him.

  164. SolarCrete,

I am sorry to write this - and it does not in any way damage your thesis, in fact it may strengthen it - the writings found in the caves below Qumran have nothing to do with the ruins on top of the cliff.

Archeologists have completely disproven the findings of the original and amateur priest/archeologists who first excavated the site. In fact, it is pretty obvious that these priests, who started the work of translating the Qumran scrolls, lied about many things, and tried to hide even more things. This is no doubt the greatest scandal in the history of archeology, and Biblical translation.

It now appears that the ruins above are an old fort of the Hasmoneans - the folks who defeated the Syro-Macedonians, and ruled for a century before Pompey arrived to settle a civil war. The Hasmoneans have no relationship with the Therapeutae brotherhood mentioned in Philo, the Essenes mentioned in Josephus, or the Zealots.

Further, the library found in the caves was written over centuries by many scribes; these scribes appear to have been members of the Roman-hating Zealots who ran training camps in the desert, and who were annihilated at nearby Masada. At this time, the most likely explanation for the presence of the scrolls in the caves is that Zealots stored them there on their way to Masada, while escaping the fast approaching Romans.

Josephus would not have been privy to the contents of this library, because as a Sadducee, he was one of their enemies.

Jesus People might or might not have known about the literature. There is some reason to suspect that at least some of the Jesus People participated in the defense of Jerusalem in 67 - 70. Perhaps, the story of their migration to Damascus is a tale of their flight following the "victory" of Menachem (another annointed, ie. Mashiach) or one of the other rebel factions. Perhaps, the Jesus people lost control of the movement that became Christianity because they were annihilated at Jerusalem, and only the Apostate Paul's pseudo-Jesus People survived. Perhaps.

I think the most striking thing about the Qumran literature is that it demonstrates that the old idea of only 3 political groups among Jews at the time of Jesus is totally erroneous.

I suggest the revolutionary and definitive Michael Wise, Martin Abegg Jr, and Edward Cook translation, The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation, (1996), HarperSanFrancisco paperback 1999, ISBN 0-06-069201-4. This book does not include the translations of Dead Sea Scroll sections of the Bible which had been published previously.

  172. Edmund Wilson thought there was something odd going on at the Qumran dig and translation institute, but he died before he could publish what all bothered him. A very famous secular French scholar worked there briefly, but wasn't a 'team player' and wasn't invited back.

Dr. John Marco Allegro worked with the Fathers for awhile, and published a translation of the Copper Scroll on his own, This translation did not fit Father de Vaux's scheme, and he lit into Allegro publicy, accusing him of all sorts of things, and claiming that his translation of the Copper Scroll was worthless. In fact, it is a pretty good translation, whereas the Official Team translation (although it sold in the millions) by Fr. Joseph Malik is bizarre, incomprehensible, and falsified.

The Fr. de Vaux accused Allegro of cutting a scroll fragment with scissors to make it fit where he wanted it. In view of the lies we now know Fr. de Vauz told, it seems more likely to me that he cut the fragment himself, to blame Dr. Allegro.

  193. Re; the early morning thread about nuns and priests.

We didn't have any nuns in the military, but we had a fair number of priests. Once a month they would hold sessions called 'character guidance' to which all the troops were required to attend.

It didn't matter what religion the officiant at character guidance was because they were all preaching off the same syllabus. But, after the required material was presented, there was usually a Q&A. The priests generally had excellent analytical minds, as did the rabbis, and clearly articulated sound answers to the troops' questions.

Can't say the same for the chaplains from the protestant religions--most of them had shallow answers to our questions. Some of us would bait them--great fun.

Sea, When I read your's on let it grow, the more jungle like the better, I couldn't believe it. That's exactly how I like it. (Nature is unruly and so am I). I've used that jungle expression many times. A couple of houses we've lived in (including this one) has been referred to as a tree house by some (I love ivy and have never preferred the manicured look, except for a mowed lawn). We have a lonnnnng growing season here (as we did in California) and I love it.

Jack, A lot of people have complained about that Bond movie because it wasn't the traditional style (I've even heard complaints on the radio) and I was a little afraid to recommend it. Me, I'm already looking forward to the next one (I love Daniel Craig as Bond!).

I saw something on education in Korea. Turns out they are over-educated and are shopping the Far East for worker bees willing to work in Korea for limited periods of time.

I see the real problem in America as being the slash-and-burn syndrome where major businesses are enticed into a community for maybe 20-years through tax incentives. When the twenty years are up, they're gone leaving the detritus of rotting plants and workers made obsolete because their employers had no long-term commitment to them or their communities. That's what has to change.

  199. What type of eduaction is needed for workers? Not all jobs require a college liberal arts education. Many require more of a vocational education. Problem is getting the right mix.

A college education isn't appropriate for everyone, some just for for 4 years of partying before they have to make a real life decision.

Part of the problem is peoples attitudes towards work. Many/most who have had a college education don't want to work with their hands. I see this all the time in my industry, it is very rare to have a printing press operator that has a college education. The college educated folks gravitate to the Customer Service Rep and Electronic Prepress jobs. Funny thing is, the pressmen make a lot more money. And when they work overtime, which is normal, they make a lot more than their managers do.

    See through young eyes again

    Folly Return
    Brain of my Youth
    Wrinkled by Truth
    unlearn unlearn unlearn

    Children who cared for me
    Come out and play
    Don't hide in Memory
    Just for today
    Kitten be found again
    I'll chase you round again
    Free and unbound again
    Just for today

    All that is beautiful

" If you bow at all, bow low. "

    Good advice that.

And it's the birthday of -

1859 Billy the Kid [William H Bonney], criminal

There is no greater tourist trap than the grave of Billy the Kid. As you drive down the road to it, the road seems to be going directly to a low yellow building with "Billy the Kid's Grave & Museum " painted all over the front. The road curves just in front, and passes to the west of the building. You get out and pay to enter one of the cheesiest two headed calf museums in the American west. After your tour of the "museum", and your forced passage into the gift shop of rubber tipped arrows, there is a small window where the old woman say's, " Would you like to see the grave ?"

"Yes , yes I would", you reply.
You are then directed out the front door, and around the west side of the building to the grave yard where Billy, Tom O'Follard. and Charlie Boudre, lie together with the headstone's inscription "Pals" on it.
This is the grave yard of Ft. Sumner, and open to the public at no cost.

Now, I admit this visit was more than 2 decades ago, and things change, but I loved the whole set-up. I loved being separated from my 5 dollars to see something for free.

    http://www.skylinesongs.com/Billys%20Grave_22.jpg

Tom O'Follard. and Charlie Boudre, were killed in a running gun fight that ended at Stinking Springs, New Mexico, 7 months before Billy's death. Billy was captured by a posse led by Pat Garret in the same engagement.

  260. Remember the white dress I wore all through that film? George came up to me the first day of filming, took one look at the dress and said: 'You can't wear a bra under that dress.'

'OK, I'll bite,' I said. 'Why?' And he said: 'Because ... there's no underwear in space.'

He said it with such conviction. Like he had been to space and looked around and he didn't see any bras or panties anywhere.

He explained. 'You go into space and you become weightless. Then your body expands but your bra doesn't, so you get strangled by your own underwear.'

I think that this would make for a fantastic obituary. I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.

Instead of a bra, what do you think I wore for support, intergalactically? Gaffer tape.

  288. This sounds familiar :
From The Geneologue Website : Arthur Hinman would publish a book, "How A British Subject Became President of the United States", the substance of which was related in a Brooklyn Daily Eagle article dated June 2, 1884: The main charge of the book is that William Chester Alan Arthur was born in Dunham Flats, Canada, on [sic] March, 1828, and that he represented himself to have been born at North Fairfield, Vermont, the birthplace of a younger brother, Chester Abell Arthur, who was born in 1830, and died a year later. It is stated that in 1834 when another son was born he received the name of William Arthur, Jr., and then the name William was dropped by William Chester Alan Arthur, and he was henceforth known as Chester Alan Arthur. The records, copies of which are given, show that in 1845 Chester Alan Arthur entered Union College, stating his age to be 16.

Should any of you drive through a McDonalds and find any of these (I need the boy hippo -- already have the girl) -- I will pay you back plus shipping obviously.

I went begging to four McDonalds today and came up empty on those three.

I have a copy of Madagascar for my granddaughter for Christmas....and how can we watch the movie together without having all the toys in front of us????

Give me one more day though....I suspect one of the McDonalds I went to is hoarding zebras and penguins. The guy at the first window told me they had ALL the characters, and the guy at the front said they only had the girl hippo. I smell a conspiracy. Gordo? Can you help?

With Ford Foundation funding, Omnibus, hosted by Alistair Cooke in his American television debut, featured diverse programming about science, the arts, and the humanities. The program featured original works by playwrights such as William Saroyan, interviews with celebrities such as Frank Lloyd Wright, and performances by many of the most famous entertainers of the day such as Jack Benny and Orson Welles. The series was the occasion for the first television appearances of Jonathan Winters and Leonard Bernstein, who gave his first televised music lectures and master classes on it. - Wiki

A folder is just something you create to put things in . Like all the photos from a vacation, or your word processing program : TextEdit. If you write a book, on TextEdit you would create a folder : "My Great Book" Then as the days went by each time you wrote a few pages that would be a file, and you'd stick it in your "My Great Book" folder.

Have you looked at the blue spyglass in the upper right hand corner ?
That's your spyglass , click it, and type in anything you want to find on the compooter. Up pops everything even close to what you're looking for, with the best item first. You can find "My Great Book" folder in seconds every time.
