"lame w duck" lol courtesy of harvard's niall ferguson last night on news hour re scon mtg:
"The problem is that the host is President Lame W. Duck, and that really puts the mockers on the likelihood of this meeting delivering any very positive result, especially after President Bush's I thought rather inflammatory speech yesterday.
I must say, when I hear President Bush defend anything, I have to question it. And when I hear him defend the free market, then even I, as a staunch free-marketeer, become a little bit nervous...
... I think it would be much better if the United States were to talk directly to one of its biggest creditors, if not its biggest creditor, China, and try to ask the question, how can we coordinate our stimulus packages? How can we coordinate our monetary policies so that our relationship doesn't break down?
....if that China-America relationship goes wrong in the year ahead, then the world comes significantly closer to a Great Depression rather than just the big recession that we currently face."

Craig, You were so interesting on Olberman. So many ideas though, I didn't know which one to latch on to. The curiosity is killing me.
Can you give us a better idea of what you believe would be the most likely reason for a strategic leak? I'm not buying the idea of it being to put pressure on her. And it seems kinda extreme, if they simply want her to not make demands. But it does make sense that they're floating the idea around to get a reaction, since that's what politicians always seem to do.
All of this still doesn't give us much to hang on to. Do you have a more specific opinion? And do you think Hillary is the most qualified, of the names being floated, for the Secretary of State job?

Taking up an issue or cause and grinding on it day after day. In Dobb's case it was, and still is immigration. Keith's doing the same thing with Hillary.
Plus being on cable news seems to do something to people's egos. The drive for ratings inflates those things something fierce. The Roman's had it right, when they had a slave on the back of the chariot whispering in the conquering general's ear :

Ha, Pat. You may be asking the wrong person. Daniel Craig (and James Bond) can do no wrong, where I'm concerned.
It's a lot more of an action movie this time, and a good one. But it is slightly different than the previous ones (can't put my finger on it.) We enjoyed it a lot, but we're real movie buffs. Seeing a movie on TV is not the same experience as seeing it in the theatre, imo. It's a whole different experience. So I'd never wait for the video on any movie, if it's something I want to see. :)
ps. Pat, thanks for that 6:37 post. Do you have more info. or is that the whole article?

Someone may have already mentioned this a few days ago. But it's nice to know there's an abundance of hope for the future.
Obama rides tide of public hopes, good will: poll
"– One week after his historic election, America's first black president-elect Barack Obama is riding on a tide of public confidence that he will improve the economy, government and race relations, a new poll showed Wednesday.
"American voters believe president-elect Barack Obama when he says, 'Yes we can'"..."

"...65% — said they think the country will be better off four years from now."
"The reception he's getting is unlike anything we've seen in decades," ....."It's a very high set of expectations to live up to. On the upside, it means people are going to be pulling for him."
"A lower level of optimism greeted President Bush and former president Bill Clinton when they were first elected......"

Keeping allies close and rivals closer: May be M.O. for Obama White House.
" -- They were bitter rivals during the campaign, but the newly elected U.S. president from Illinois said all along he wasn't looking for a team of allies.
"These are the most able men in the country," Abraham Lincoln said of his new Cabinet. "I'm going to need them by my side."
The explanation may be a century and a half old, but its logic is in vogue with President-elect Barack Obama, who is strongly considering his chief Democratic rival and several other former adversaries to play key roles in his administration.
Sen. Hillary Clinton could even be tapped to serve as Obama's secretary of state, a choice that would closely parallel Lincoln's appointment on that most crucial of choices for a wartime president."

Portal to Maya "Hell" Found in Mexico?
According to Maya myth, the souls of the dead had to follow a dog with night vision on a horrific and watery path and endure myriad challenges before they could rest in the afterlife. ................

Speaking of Lou Dobbs...or rather, of anti-immigrant hysteria...I'm concerned that my Mexican neighbors down the street appear to have vanished. The children-- about seven of them -- always trick or treated me, and they were a nice bunch of kids. Only one spoke English, but he spoke for the rest. The kids never showed up on Halloween. It then occurred to me that I hadn't seen them outside for a few days. Now, the house seems deserted. But I never saw anyone in the process of moving. I hope something ugly didn't happen. Like the INS.

So I'll take Gordo's name out of the discussion, though people like him are, in my opinion, a big part of the problem. A customer was in my gas station two days after Barack Obama won and she was thrilled, like so many around here. She even picked up a special report magazine on the Obama win. Anyway, a friend of mine was standing behind the the counter and she commented on how happy she was. Chris said "yes but I hope he doesn't get assassinated". Now to understand Chris is to understand that he is not really well educated but seems to go along with the topic of the day. The customer runs a holistic health shop, massage oils... herbs and so forth. she said "U mag dat niet zeggen!"
which means "You cannot say that!". I looked at her and at Chris and she explained that too many people repeat this because people are afraid of Obama being assassinated. She then says to Chris, "you must not say these things because it creates the environment for it to happen. The more people repeat fears of threats, or demonize the person, the more it can become a likelihood. I guess she was saying that negativity, no matter how the person means it, contributes to the energy flow around us and such energy is very powerful. Sort of like when journalists go on "feeding frenzies"... their energy partially creates a "reality"... certainly a change in the life flows...
I was glad Chris was told not to say it, though I don't think he understood at all. I cannot tell you how many people came into my shop to say they hoped Obama is not assassinated. I kept reassuring them that security for the POTUS is very strong, much different than in Kennedy's day and we can all share the optimism of this President not only surviving, but excelling... for the USA, for Europe, for the world.

X-Rep; I've really enjoyed the Jesus and taxes discussion; Not only have the original gospels likely changed for audiences, but the four gospels themselves are written for different reasons and to different audiences. I happen to like Mark's gospel. It was the first written, the shortest, and just tells the story - bang! And I didn't mean to imply that Jesus was pro-taxes. He made a snide comment about those questioning him... that if they traded in Roman coins, then the Romans had every right to tax them.

My wife made me canvass for Obama; here's what I learned
This election is not about major policies. It's about hope.
By Jonathan Curley
from the November 3, 2008 edition
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - There has been a lot of speculation that Barack Obama might win the election due to his better "ground game" and superior campaign organization.
I had the chance to view that organization up close this month when I canvassed for him. I'm not sure I learned much about his chances, but I learned a lot about myself and about this election.
Let me make it clear: I'm pretty conservative. I grew up in the suburbs. I voted for George H.W. Bush twice, and his son once. I was disappointed when Bill Clinton won, and disappointed he couldn't run again.

Gingrich has been married three times. He married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old (she was seven years his senior at 26 years old).[7][8] They had two daughters and divorced in 1980. It is alleged that while she was in the hospital recovering from surgery for uterine cancer, he appeared at her bedside with a yellow legal pad outlining the details for their divorce,[9] an action that would later be used against him: In 1992, his Democratic opponent,

I know my Mom does hers early and certainly before Thanksgiving. Here, decorations are not supposed to go up until after "Sinterklaas" which is 6 December. I can't wait that long.. I love the decorations.

This place can give you a severe case of Deja Vu. Right after the primaries we were talking about Clinton as VP, SOS, or Supreme Court. There were a lot of references to "Team of Rivals" then. Once Biden was named as VP and Clinton went on the trail for Obama while saying she had no interest in the Supremes and giving every indication that she would just return to the Senate ("The Bloom where you are planted" remark)
Still she never said no to SOS.
Now we are back to having it all on TV with Doris Kearns Goodwin's book back at number one.
I would love to see Clinton as SOS. She and Biden would work well together while providing a Washington wise duo to advise Obama and free him up to bring in younger, newer people in other jobs.
I suppose Richardson has to get something since he is Hispanic, has expertise in several areas, and Obama owes him big time. The President Elect isn't likely to take my suggestion of dropping him over the side of the Grand Canyon.
Tammy Duckworth has been mentioned both for the VA and replacing Obama in the Illinois Senate seat. Since she is already doing the VA job on the state level, bringing her up to the national level makes sense, particularly since JJ Jr. wants the Senate.

Several of the models for a new health care system do have a Medicare type component while still using the Insurance companies. From what I've read and with ET's input the best options seem to be rather like Belgium's plan where businesses or individuals can buy in to any of the insurance plans or a government provided alternative and the government negotiates with insurance carriers on behalf of the citizens.
We really need to redo the drug program for seniors. How the Feds could create something that didn't negotiate the prices of drugs for Medicare when they do it for the VA is beyond me. Talk about corporate welfare.

She seems to have the administrative expertise and the VA has a lot of career bureaucrats to assist with the minutia. The big plus would be for vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and seeing one of their own at the top of the food chain.
It would instill confidence since she would have a familiarity with their needs better than someone who hadn't been wounded. or through the system.
Also, she is multi racial with Asian ethnicity. It wouldn't be an "only" reason to hire her, but it helps when you are trying to design a cabinet that looks like America while getting a lot of brains and talent.

you have my attention with Chaco Canyon...it is a most incredible area and although the main sites have been partly excavated, their are many sites on the old dirt roads that remain buried. If it is not raining, many of the arroyos lead to minor sites in the huge ancient communication system. A person could spend a lifetime studying there. There is a documentary about time and Chaco Canyon with Robert Redford as narrator. I may have recorded it at one time.

Jamie, I don't recall whether you are under Medicare yet, so I'll assume not. Medicare does integrate with private insurers that supplement the basic Medicare coverages. In their 2009 pamphlet 'Medicare & You' there are almost 20 pages of insurers registered as supplemental carriers just for South Carolina. The tables in the Medicare pamphlet detail the coverages, the costs involved, and user ratings of the plans.
The Belgian system seems to be similar to the plan for government employees. The plan can be frightfully expensive for high levels of coverage.
I agree with your appreciation of the Part D Medicare drug benefit.

But to advance the technology for both Energy and Healthcare. And our individual behavior !

Imagining Other Dimensions
by Rick Groleau
The Elegant Universe homepage
For most of us, or perhaps all of us, it's impossible to imagine a world consisting of more than three spatial dimensions. Are we correct when we intuit that such a world couldn't exist? Or is it that our brains are simply incapable of imagining additional dimensions—dimensions that may turn out to be as real as other things we can't detect?

If I was president, I would accidently on purpose 'leak' things all the time, just to see what the public reaction would be. At any time, the Obama camp could say 'oh no, no,no. We were not considering Hillary.' Then someone else could be 'leaked' until the right person for the right situation is mentioned and then they could say 'Oh yes, that's who we were thinking of the whole time.' Manipulation at it's best.

Patsi----
Thanks for the string theory links...I knew I wasn't crazy when I felt like I could reach out and touch another world
actually it does,,,especially if you can touch----this and the experiences that u have had, means to me that u are sensitive to time
patsi ---tivo is a recording devise that can record on average about 80 hrs of programing -----it cost about 11-12 bucks per month---i have recorded about 800 hours,,,on all subjects-----you can program it by name of subject that u want to see,,or be name---for example my wife loves elvis movies---so i program it by putting elvis---it will record on its own forever, until i stop it ,,,could be in one hour from when u programed it or six months,,,it never forgets
About the elegant universe it is at least 3 years old--but a very good read and or tape,,,after you watch it u will know that there are unlimited dimensions in time, all fabric of life is vibrations that we touch but cannot see, by altering time we will be able to somewhat,,,,but your first inclination of energy is correct as far as i know,,,a good example is that if u are on a platform waiting for a train to board,,,is the time for u the same time for the ones inside the train,,,no
another is the lights in a saw mill makes a moving saw blade look like its standing still--and off comes off that middle index finger that u like to use:-)this why they use a diff type of lighting system....but over all times is of the most important factor in all that we do and not aware of-------the west could not have been conquered with out the timing of the trains that went back and forth---they would have crashed,,,,but any way u will love watching the series...

JESUS
I have lost many members of my family to religion,,,,this why i have compiles much info as i can,,,,at first to understand what the attraction about religion,,,but now to get them back---or stop from losing more of them--here we go,,, from the beginng as i understand it all, from a diff sources---if you just go by the bible,,it is not enough.
There is a resemblance between cargo cults and early christian beliefs....jesus predicted the down fall of the wicked, justice for the poor, the end of misery and suffering, reunion with the dead, and a whole new divine kingdom,,,,cargo cults are not i repeat the same,,they are very similar in lots of ways ----they can help us to understand the conditions responsible for the origin of our own religious lifestyles?
Jesus was not interested in the overthrow of any specific political system,,,he was above politics---his kingdom being not of this world. when the first christians spoke of battles against the wicked, their swords, fires, and victories--were mere earthbound metaphors for transcendental spiritual events...at least that is what almost everybody believes the original jesus cult was all about.
like i said jesus is all a part of a design--it seems impossible that a lifestyle, so devoted to peace, love, and selflessness , could have been in any fundamental sense a product of definite material conditions......yet like said this riddle like all others has a solution, in the practical affairs of peoples and natiions.----2 riddles need to be considered,,,,christianity first came about (arose) first among jews living in palestine,,,,,,a belief in the coming of a savior called a messiah-----a god who would look like a man----was an important feature of judaism at the time of christ,,,,,the followers of jesus were jews(almost all) believed that jesus was this savior-----
christ---is derived from Krystos,,,which was the way jews referred to their hoped-for savior when speaking Greek..
the basis of the jewish belief in a messiah,,,,is that all ancient people believed that battles could not be won without divine assistance,,to win an empire, or just to survive as an independent state,,they needed warriors with whom ancestors, angles, or gods were willing to cooperate,,,,,,,,DAVID---- the founder of the first jewish empire------more to come

aha! eureka! the geeks have saved the day re thread's theme: "leaky abstractions" as in the law that all non-trivial abstractions, to some degree, are leaky.
"From the perspective of Spolsky's Law of Leaky Abstractions, all non-trivial abstractions resist complete implementation by their very nature. Consequently, implementation details will always leak through, regardless of how well-conceived, and no matter how rigorously they attempt to faithfully represent the abstraction. Sometimes the leaks are minor, other times they are significant, but they will always be present, because there is no such thing as a perfect implementation of an abstraction.
In this context, the term isn't a misnomer, since it applies to all implementations of all abstractions.
It is most likely this notion Spolsky intended to convey by expressing the viewpoint as a "law" and attributing the "leakiness" to abstractions, rather than to imprecise implementations." [wiki]
now if that doesn't fit this recent leak phenom from our new obama nation, nothing does.

Pat, I don't think veterans, as a group, were enthralled with Cleland.
It's nice if they have someone who's served; it's even nicer if the person is competent. Having someone who is profoundly disabled tends to place the focus on that individual's disability rather than the VA mission.
Regrettable as each Iraq/Afghanistan injury is, and how it affects the vet and the vet's family, the public and the director must realize that those vets are a relatively small subset of disabled veterans--many of whom are being under treated.
The president must be the cheerleader for disabled veterans; the director must be the administrator extraordinaire.
Thanks for the congrats, Pat.

Davis claimed to be in divine partnership with the jewish god Yahweh,,,a term that also applies to priest, shields, davids predecessor saul, and david's son solomon,,,so messiah originally meant any person or thing possessing great holiness and sacred power,,,david was also called the anointed one---the one, who by collaboration with jahweh,,was entitled to rule over jahwehs earthly domains(jesus was used for this purpose---but if he was born from a virgin--how was he related to david?? his father joseph had the blood line,,but)---the name david meaning great commander was given to him to celebrate his rise to power---victories on the battlefield was the inspiration ---the life plan for the ideal jewish military messianic career.....he was born in BETHLEHEM??--his real name was Elhanan ben JESSE??--,,he was the outlaw leader of a guerrilla monement in the judean desert (possibly the first terrorist??) he located his headquarters in a cave and achieved his victories against seemingly great odds---the fight against Goliath---could they have jesus in mind for something similar?--cos the jewish priests insisted down to the time of jesus that jahweh had made a covenant with david,,,jahewh had promised david that his dynasty would never end,,,,a big lie Nebuchadnezzar captured jerusalem in 586 b.c. and deported large numbers of jews to babylonia,,, afterwards the jewish state resumed a precarious existence as the dependent client of one or another imperial power--u see there is a need for a non peaceful jesus---the jews want it all back------what jahweh told moses----was that the jewish people would rule over nations but none would rule over them,,,,yet jahwehs promised land was an unlikely spot from which to launch the conquest of the world---for one thing it was a military thruway--the main corridor along which all the imperial armies of asia, africa and europe chased each other to and from egypt..nothing in palestine could take root,,,it was stamped out by some million-footed monster of any army passing in one direction or the other,..egytiansAssyrians, babylonians, persians greeks and romans whent back and forth,,,,,,,,These experiences placed a considerable strain on the credibility of jahwehs sacred books and his remnant priesthood ( you bet the need a jesus by now huh--but one that will fight and give them what is theres by divine right)
Why had jahweh permitted so many nations to become great while his chosen people were repeatedly conquered and enslaved(sounds like the bible? with no bs?) this was the great mystery that the jewish holy men and prophets kept trying to dcipher-----jahweh would send another (jesus) military prince like david,,messiah, anointed one, to destroy the enemy nations,,,and so the old testment teem with the promises of redemptive prophets---isaiah, heremiah, ezekiel, micah, zechariah, and others---allurging or sanctioning the adoption of a military- messianic lifestyle-----more to come

Louisiana
A senior at LSU was overheard saying... 'When the end of the world comes,
I hope to be in Louisiana .' When asked why, he replied he'd rather be in
Louisiana because everything happens in Louisiana 20 years later than in
the rest of the civilized world.

The first passenger says: "I'm Ronaldo, the best football player in the world. The football world needs me, and I can not die on my fans."
He grabs the first parachute and jumps out off the plane.
The second passenger, Hillary Clinton says: "I'm the wife of former President of USA; I'm the senator of New York and I have a good chance of being President of the USA in future."
She grabs a parachute and jumps out off the plane.
The third passenger, George W. Bush, says: "I'm the president of USA. I have a huge responsibilities in the world. Besides, I am the smartest president in the history of my county and can't shun the responsibility to my people by dying."
He grabs a pack and jumps out off the plane.
The fourth passenger, The Pope, says to the fifth passenger, a young school boy:" I am old. I have lived my life as a good person as a priest should and so I shall leave the last parachute t
