Honeymoon in Washington

| | Comments (253)

WH110608.jpgWho knows how long it lasts, but starting with the spontaneous crowds cheering in the streets on Election Night, the nation's capital feels different right now. People are less moody, as if climbing out of a dark hole into the light.

Walking past the White House this morning, as I often do, it wasn't just the scaffolding going up for the new president's Inaugural parade reviewing stand. People were smiling and laughing, congratulating each other on the election of Barack Obama.

"Keep the faith," one man said to no one in particular as he watched the construction workers, who turned and waved. And then those within earshot burst into a long round of applause.

Blonde, Caught your post on the last thread. That was another wonderful story.

I had one cat drag himself home after a week, he had been shot in the leg. They were able to pin his leg too. The one I'm talking about that lost her rear leg was hit by a car not long after we moved here. It was a miserable time, but fifteen years later, she's still around and feisty as ever.

sorry to over post so early in the am maybe a boring joke is better

Two Kentucky businessmen in Louisville were sitting down for a break in their soon-to-be new store.
As yet, the store wasn't ready, with only a few shelves set up. One said to the other,
"I bet any minute now some idiot tourist is going to walk by, put his face to the window,
    and ask what we're selling."
No sooner were the words out of his mouth when, sure enough, a curious Indiana Hoosier walked
to the window, had a peek, and in a thick irish accent asked "What might ye be sellin' here?"
One of the men replied sarcastically, "We're selling ass-holes."
Without skipping a beat, the Hoosier said, "You are doing very well... only two left!"
Hoosiers - God bless them - should not mess with Hoosiers.

  12. chloe...how wonderful your cat has been with you fifteen years. It does pain me to watch a 3-legged animal hobble, the dog whisperer's pack has many an abused dog without a leg, eye, etc. Rupert owns the National Geographic channel which runs Cesar Milan's show -- for some reason that surprised me. -------------------------------
You have decided to defend SoetorObama's decision to keep important documents hidden from the American people. Apparently, you believe the Constitution just doesn't matter in this situation.

    Instead of answering the question:

Why is SoetorObama refusing to authorize the release of certified hardcopy BCs and other documents which would prove he is Constitutionally qualified for the office of POTUS?

You and others try to shift the discussion to Berg, standing, Annenberg FactCheck, FTS site, misleading statements by HI officals and AP writers, etc.

SoetorObama is keeping these documents secret because he can and must. He does have a "hidden" past and it has to stay hidden for him to avoid very serious legal problems.

  56. Gordo, you misconstrue. I don't accept your premise. I didn't say I defended him not releasing the documents - I said I believe he has. You just aren't satisfied with what has been released and with who has examined them and reported on their examination - IMHO that is your problem and not Obama's - and you make absurd assumptions about the constitution, and who has rights and responsibilities under it. If there is a dispute over what the constitution requires, it is up to the courts to resolve that dispute. I'm not rehashing the dozen or so ways Berg (and you by defense of him) screwed the pooch in his efforts. You didn't require the same of McCain despite the same or similar questions being raised about him, and accepted much less "proof" of his qualifications to serve if elected. You were being hypocritical then - you are just factually and legally wrong now. And you are repeating yourself.

  57. The legal issue of same sex marriage is a little funny to (not ha ha) but stupid funny-----here is a thought------in the catholic church u r married by a priest that performs the rites-------the priest that married my wife and my i was one of the priest that was accused and convicted for having relations with kids-------if on moral grounds some don't want to give the gay community the ability to get married----why don't they use this as a kind of information (in your face type of thing) to accomplish thru advertising etc etc, and of course they can get andrew sullivan to spear head on tv and print and others like him that have a voice to show an other side of it,,,,,hey i wonder if i have a loop hole here to get out of marriage ( if i bring it up like a smart ass my wife will just open the door and say-------) the priest are supposed to be in the state of grace (pure) in order to give the sacraments no???well they weren't,,,,,soooo a lot of people out there are not really married, forgiven at confesional, baptized, or any of the witch rituals that go on???

You can start with this, there is much more.
    ------------
    Rahm Emanuel’s War

"Yesterday Truthout ran an examination of how Emanuel, who remains in a position to do candidate recruitment for the DCCC this cycle, used his similar position last time around to sabotage the campaigns of grassroots progressives who favored leaving Iraq, all so he could recruit candidates who, when they've won, have gone on to provide Bush and the Republicans everything they want on Iraq and more."

Just love how the Republicans can't seem to get with the program. Keep it up Mr. Boehner with your shitty attitude maybe at the midterms we can turn the whole country blue. We don't need this crap right now, we need to fix what's wrong and the Republicans are continuing to act like adolescents throwing spit balls at the new class president.

  61. Feeling good and feel good stories
Cable car gripmen --play hail to the chief as Obama victory announced:

"But the real fun was out on the square, where hundreds of revelers literally danced in the streets, waved Obama signs and chanted, "O-bam-a!" and "Yes we can!"

The throng was egged on by the happily honking motorists and some particularly inspired cable car grip men, who clanged away merrily on their bells, surrounded by a mob and stuck on the tracks.

"I have to tell you, that speech brought tears to my eyes," said Ellis Cato, who with fellow grip man Craig Wiggins, was ringing up "Hail to the Chief" and other tunes on the bell. "Damn, this feels good!"

Cato and Wiggins still couldn't believe their luck. They thought work would make them miss the president-elect's speech. Turned out they were ending their route, where there's a Muni shack with a TV, when it came on.

"You could see in that crowd in Chicago and this one here that this country has all these great people of all nationalities and they're coming together," Wiggins said.

    Posted by: patd | November 6, 2008 3:05 PM

  86. Gordo, you've lost it. I haven't diverted attention from anything. Let me be as clear as I can. I accept the documentation provided by Annenburg Fact Check and the AP as being sufficiently credible to satisfy my own curiosity about Obama's birthplace, and I don't care about what was originally posted on the Stop The Smears site or on Kos. Refutation of that by a somewhat anonymous blogger is hardly dispositive, and his own opinion of the "proof" he's offered that the document is a forgery is appropos of nothing other than his opinion. (And consider this - Townhall.com, on whose blog polarik's work appears, has never put his conclusions into the NEWS sections of its site). I can only conclude that is because even Townhall does not consider his conclusions credible enough for inclusion there. Finally, I don't think the constitution requires that Obama do what you require or that any proof required by it be made available to you or to Phillip Berg as a certified hard copy. Face it, your argument doesn't pass muster.

Why is SoetorObama refusing to authorize the release of certified hardcopy BCs and other documents which would prove he is Constitutionally qualified for the office of POTUS?

But subsequent acts of Congress relaxed the requirement to five years in the U.S., including just two years after the age of 14, meaning Dunham could have been 16 and still qualified even if Obama was born in another country, Volokh said. Very true. Example - interest rates for inter-bank loans is essentially zero, but banks are not lending to each other. (I don't mean they aren't lending at all, but that the loan activity is very low). While the low rate might be attractive to the borrower, it doesn't pay for the lender. I think this has something to do with the widespread lack of available credit, but someone who knows something about this stuff should try and explain it.

If you want to put the job losses in perspective, consider that 50 years ago, every town of even moderate size all around the world had a building with no windows where some 200 women were employed in three shifts around the clock. Even the smallest town had at least one woman who turned off the equipment when she went to bed. At the time the population of the world was half of what it is now.

  150. Ping, cheap, easy credit, or lack thereof, is indeed a problem when the economy's apparent vigor is built on it but the lenders are holding onto their cash. I don't know about the blip thing - I'll leave that to economists and history to sort out.

I do know I heard that the unemployment claims last week (or maybe it was unemployment figures for October - traffic was bad and I was a little distracted) are the highest since 1969, the U.S. auto industry is looking worse than I've ever seen it, productivity is slipping, the dollar looks weak (which has its upside - I'm going to Mexico in a couple of weeks), manufacturing is dismal, and so on and so forth. My 401(k) is bleeding and I can't decide whether to shift more of it into cash for a while to see whether the market is going to go up or down or into bonds or do nothing - and I have access to people who supposedly understand this stuff but who don't know what to advise me - none of them predicted this, so why would I listen to them now? Maybe I'll buy gold, but it's lost 25% since Jan, so what to do? All I can say is I hope you are right.

And it won't be up to just Obama to keep the mood light in DC - a quick filibuster or two could turn the mood sour very quickly.

What documents has SoetorObama released to the public? You mean altered COLB images on web sites? You mean a fake COLB to his pals at Annenberg FactCheck? Nothing has been released.
    ---------------
I went to the Chicago Tribune Link. Could an article be more pro - SoetorObama? I don't think so.

"A persistent rumor circulated by opponents of Barack Obama in recent weeks questions the authenticity of his birth certificate from Hawaii, despite the fact that the Obama campaign debunked the rumor in June."

That is NOT correct. It is a LIE. Therefore, the entire article is suspect.
    ----------------
He refuses to make BCs and other documents public. Besides birth place, there are citizenship issues because of Indonesia and Kenya.

    The cover-up continues.

  154. Statement out from Sen. Reid ...

Today Senator Lieberman and I had the first of what I expect to be several conversations. No decisions have been made. While I understand that Senator Lieberman has voted with Democrats a majority of the time, his comments and actions have raised serious concerns among many in our caucus. I expect there to be additional discussions in the days to come, and Senator Lieberman and I will speak to our caucus in two weeks to discuss further steps

Looks like Lieberman will be slow roasted.

the problem with the American cars is not the cost of steel -it's building the wrong car and refusing to acknowledge it when others tried to help them build the right car --they lobbied against it. I have no sympathy for industries that refuse to change with the times. The American car industry for the most part had its collective head up its butt. How much retraining and pension guarantee will the proposed bailout buy instead? Why prop up buggy whip manufacturers --I think paying the workers directly is a better idea. Let the workers decide their own futures.

  159. GORDO,
The answer is that there is no reason Senator Obama should make his birth certificate available to you. You have never said why he should. You, Gordo, don't have a reason why he should. We know that you don't, because several of us have asked for one, and you repeatedly failed to answer.

You have never provided a cause for Obama to act on your request. To him, and the rest of us, you're just a bystander with a bizarre thought in your head, but not an atom of evidence that there is anything untoward. For practical purposes, you are merely a gawker, and Senator Obama's birth certificate is no more your business than is pogo's or my birth certificates.

Iow, if you can't give a legitimate reason to ask for the document, you will never get that document, 'cuz it's really none of your business, and the Senator doesn't owe you a thing.

Until Obama's birth certificate becomes your business, so that you do have a legitimate reason to request the document, you cannot expect satisfaction from the Senator. However, if you really think the matter is important, you can still go to HI - as I have written to you several times already - and petition to examine the document under the FOIA, and satisfy yourself that you have been barking up exactly the wrong tree.

Otherwise, if you don't think this matter is important enough to go to Hawaii for, please stop bleating about it.

Maybe Palin's tears were because she didn't get to give her concession speech she had written. Also heard today that she refused to campaign with some repubs she didn't agree with - like a pro-choice candidate. I have a friend who works for Sonoma County. He worked for the county entirely for the retirement package which included healthcare ..after 10 years. He is getting ready to retire and they are trying to weasel out of the promise..not just for him but all the county retirees. What's the point of a contract if you can unilaterally get out of it? If that's how it works, why not just promise everything and just say nevermind when payment time comes.

which are two items that can never be replaced, unlike money. Somebody who speaks for employees has to make this point. If you work for 20 years at a job after college, you are 41 or 42, and had better hope that company or job will be well run for a lot more time.

Yes.It is a terrible problem.I know things are terrible back in Flint. My niece just lost her job,the restaurant she was working at closed suddenly. Ashley doesn't have any insurance but thankfully she can get unemployment. She told me she has to give up her apartment and move in with her aunt. I will send her Christmas money early and then some to pay for the moving costs.I feel so bad for Ashley and some in the younger generation, there's no lunch bucket jobs that pay a decent wage with medical...I wish I knew how to make things better for Ashley....I spoke with her on election day and she was so into Obama's change message,oh her hopes are so high, she's looking at him like he's the messiah!! I cautioned her ,telling her that Obama will be inheriting the biggest mess any President ever has and to be very patient...Ashley is under the impression things will change and change fast because Obama said so, I told her politicians say many things....On a brighter note, how was your granddaughters Halloween?I'm sure the costume Tracy made was wonderful..E-mail some photo's if you have any..I sure enjoyed all my kids in the neighborhood, but wished I wouldn't have had any Snicker bars left...Oh God,Ive been bad...Sugar Bad.. The fact that he refuses to authorize the release of certified hardcopy BCs is proof that he is hiding something. Think about it - we are talking about a birth certificate! What's the big deal? People have to show BCs all the time for many reasons.

Wonder how using an illegal name (BHO) since his teens would complicate SoetorObama's situation?

Has he been lying about his birth country?

Has he been lying about his legal name?

  213. Jack,

I am diabetic, so I will avoid the eye irritation.

Thanks for the excellent advice. I am becoming obsessed by GORDO's inability to learn through either discourse or satire.

Everyone else on this planet knows that the absence of any evidence means that the case will be thrown out. There is nothing more absent than evidence that Obama is not who he says he is.

I wonder if he had a head injury - perhaps the tertiary spirochete. GORDO reminds me of Mark Chapman, who killed that ex-Beatle fellow.

There is no evidence because all the evidence has been either sealed or "scrubbed". If SoetorObama has no damaging secrets in his "hidden" past, he would voluntarily release ALL documents. And prove he is Constitutionally eligible for POTUS. Guilty until proven innocent.

  217. xrep,

When I hung out on usenet they called people like Gordo "netkooks". If I could block him I would. We all know what he has to say so the best thing is to just ignore him or anyone else(including me if I irritate you) It would be easier if the name is at the top. But I tend to not read long posts until I see who it is. A habit I developed when max was here last spring.

  221. Alert - this post go a little long -bethy.

KFC - I do agree with you re the worthless promises
corporations and govt agencies make. The thing is that it is recognized and nothing is done about it.

I've been thinking that in order to get things fixed or changed a movement has to be started and led by someone who has energy and the right temperament.
Martin Luther King, of course, but Jesse Jackson and Rev Al as well. Those two just wouldn't shut up. There always seems to be enough Kenneth Lays to abuse people, but not enough fighters to go after them. I know I couldn't have done it.

Solar - My bil thinks it's fascinating to think of space colonies etc. I think it sounds horrible. I am made very uncomfortable by straight lines and right angles - they are cold to me and rigid, like steel and concrete and glass. Nature doesn't like straight lines, either. Who would want to cuddle with a skeleton?? give me someone rounded and soft and warm....

Sea - your menu is impossible to ignore. You'll be hearing from me.

Jamie - I use a lot of lyrics and titles in my inner conversations. "Porgy and Bess" is one of my favorites - maybe that should go on my list of to-do's - get the Gershwin Foundation to release the movie so people can see it again! Most of the lyrics I know are pretty old, tho

Jack - right on re Max's posts. I do try to warn from the berginning when I post one of my monsters, and will try to do it more consistently.

The trouble is knowing how long a post is going to be - HA!

BETHY,,where is your sense of adventure??? how do u think we got this far,,,a few threads ago there was talk about the fruit fly, i think it was the fruit fly,,,but here is a lot of experiment that they do on them since one can actually see evolution in processes,. as fast as some farmers spray insecticides to kill them, they evolve and become immune to the chemicals----they also are injected with dna to develop extra legs, eyes, etc-----now don't read this if u don't want to------have bil read it-----when we are going to space travel to another planet, it is going to take so long that the passengers will be put to sleep and woken up in aabout 50 years after they board,,,,,the flight atendents, will not sleep at all, they will feed people while they sleep,, they will have 4 arms and no legs since they will not need them---all of this will be quite normal,,,,can u imagine what the people that colonize the new planet will look like---------I can't wait to go, lets go ok?

That was no friend, that was the wife. ;-0

Your talk about bridge building the other day reminded me. Have you ever got your self certified as a minority small business by the SBA?

My wife worked marketing for a small local Architect firm and through them worked with several of the local big boys construction firms. If they are doing any federal work they have to have certain goals they need to meet with regards to small and small minority subs. So they often set up mentoring relationships with minority small businesses. Could be a way to grow.

  232. Jack, Solar

The concrete design made me think back to the times when lots of septic tanks were needed for postwar housing.

If a mixer returned from a construction job with some leftover concrete, they would dump it into a septic tank mold. I remember seeing ready-mix yards with dozens of septic tanks just waiting for a home.

There's so much opportunity for reliable subs, especially those with unique competencies, even when the economy is down.

  233. Jack---i see it must be interesting for u and your wife to share the same passion of building-------No i have not certified as yet, been thinking about it now---------at the time that i started my construction biz---it was not seen as a good thing to get minority work, it was considered a handout----i build up my co, a little at a time, until i had a revolving clients of architects and others,,,always had work to carry me and my men thru, until now,,,but will probably go that route if the houses don't work out,,,there is more but that is the gist of it, thank you and your wife for asking

  237. Jamie - do you mean the actors didn't want to speak in the vernacular? Shame on them. I don't remember how they spoke their lines.

I do remember Clara singing Summertime in front of the water. I remember Crown singing that miraculous duet with Bess. I remember on the sound track vinyl lp that Sammy Davis jr couldn't be on it - it had to be Cab Calloway. I think more than anything I remember the ball bouncing in counter rhythm to another sound - a hammer maybe? - and Pearl Bailey singing
Strawberrrrrieees. Those sounds go through my brain all the time and it's frustrating to me that I can't duplicate the sounds.

My sisters and I have made Oh, Lord, I'm on my way
into our special language. I want to see that movie again and think it would be welcomed by young black kids with great joy, regardless of the lack of correct accent.

That show they allowed on PBS some years ago was a real drag. I've seen part of the movie with Simon Rattle, but was out somewhere and couldn't watch. I loved that stage set in the old movie.

Solar - I do not believe that it takes all kinds.....it is just that there ARE all kinds. Not all kinds are needed. However I do believe that your kind who see the future as an adventure are very necessary, so appreciate your attitude, and that of my bil.

I just know my strengths and weaknesses and accept myself. I may be boring to a lot of people, but not to myself! HA!

One of my strengths is that I'm a great great appreciator and so I appreciate you and all the folks here.

House just got lucky and walked into the office singing the Serenade fromStudent Prince.........................

Another song I hear all the time.

Anon, "you want fries with that?" was the official class theme of Evergreen State College's 1996 graduating class. LOL... That is when I got my second diploma -- Master of Public Administration. Proud moment, and I was the very first person to receive the diploma. Cynical theme? A bit. Our 1990 theme was something like "OUr diversity and unity is our strength"

  242. One thing.. Ping and Jax... you guys are alright in my book. Your politics make me crazy, but you are decent gentlemen! There are some Republicans I like, and I even voted for two in Washington State election... so I am strong Democrat who sometimes crosses party lines.

Actually I love most of the people in this blog...We can be upset at comments, but we are pretty much congenial and friendly with one another.
