"Why are we so gullible?" [from last thread]
craig, as tonto would say, what do you mean "we" white man? wanted to say this yesterday, but it being your purported b-day, i didn't wish to be rude.
btw, public nudity! and on thanksgiving? you could have at least strategically placed a parsley sprig or two on the old bird.

Gobble, gobble....I've got a ham slow cooking in brown sugar, dijon and pineapples...but with just a few coming this year am REALLY slowing it down...just some appetizers, then the ham, potato salad and baked beans....
My daughter and her husband have a big turkey dinner at his parents' tonight -- so I figured we better go light here. My son couldn't get away from DC so it'll just be the daughter, SIL, grandbaby and my friend Joe Sun.
I may even use paper plates.....

well, off to gut and skin the pumpkin fresh killed at dawn. those critters are getting wilier and wilier... the males are particularly hard to catch... and when you do sight 'em, it's a difficult shot with the ak-47 so as not to ruin the meat.

We'll have our Thanksgiving shindig tomorrow--today the rest of the local Ohlfahrt family is out volunteering. So, for today, Stinky has told me to vacuum the house; she says it's therapeutic. Guess it does get my blood pressure into the normal range.
Today for 'dinner' I think I'll have a bowl of raisin bran topped with a sliced banana. If that's not healthy, I don't know what is. Stinky will probably have some Korean leftovers along with a couple different styles of kimchi.
But, still, to all of those who frequent this area of peace and tranquility, I wish you exactly the kind of Thanksgiving that you remember from your childhood as being the best one ever.
And while I'm sitting here, maybe I'll start a letter to Autumn Kim.

Cornucopia
Saturday November 22, 2008
The cornucopia, literally 'horn of plenty,' adorns the Thanksgiving table thanks to Greek mythology. The horn may originally have belonged to a goat, but Zeus used to drink from it as a baby. The story of Zeus' childhood says that his mother, Rhea, sent him to a cave on the island of Crete for safe-keeping in order to prevent his father, Cronus, from swallowing him.
See Cannibalism in Greek Mythology
Sometimes it is said that a goat named Amalthea (various spellings) nursed the infant Zeus; sometimes that a nymph of the same name fostered Zeus and fed him on goat's milk. His nurse has also been named Adrasteia, which Timothy Gantz says may be another name for Nemesis, and Ida.
While an infant, Zeus did what other babies do -- cry. To cover up the noise and keep Cronus from finding out his wife's plot to protect her son, Amalthea asked the Kuretes or Korybantes to come to the cave where Zeus was hidden and make lots of noise by clashing their weapons.
There are various versions of the evolution of the cornucopia from a horn sitting on the head of the nurturing goat. One is that the goat tore it off herself to present it to Zeus; another that Zeus tore it off and gave it back to the Amalthea-goat promising her abundance; another, that it came from the head of Achelous, the river god, which the Naiads filled with fruit.
The cornucopia is most frequently associated with the goddess of the harvest, Demeter (Roman Ceres) -- as in the harvest song lyrics: "Ceres came with Plenty's Horn and showered wheat and golden corn" -- but is also associated with other gods, including the aspect of the Underworld god that is the god of wealth, Pluto, since the horn symbolizes abundance.

The chicken sounds good.
We are doing a turkey because for my wife that is thanksgiving, even though there are only us and my Fatherin law.
Traditionally I'm not bound to turkey. We didn't have turkey until I was older, as a turkey had to be bought at the store and we had beef or pork in the freezer.
So I would rather do prime rib but I getting ready to put a turkey in the oven.
We aren't doing many of the other heavy foods.
Just some roasted fall veggies, Youkon gold potatoes , carrots turnip sweet potatoes and acorn squash. all in the same dish with a light coating of butter.
and a salad with the last of the summer tomatoes.
For desert, pumpkin pie with out the crust, just the goodies. topped with lots of fluff.
No alchoholic beverages until we take the father-in-law home.
I'd better get the turkey in the oven.

No crust, a big dollup of fluff.
To make the crustless pie , use your favorite pumpkin pie filling.
spray a glass pie dish with pam
pour in the pie filling and bake as usual.

Good morning all and happy Thanksgiving! All of your meals sound delicious.
Am a little behind, just made my pies-the kids wanted different ones. Other than the turkey and potatoes, we just might be eating pie. The rest of my family is down in Georgia at the river house doing lots of eating, drinking, laughing, wished I were there. My Dad has Alzheimers and I so wish I could be with him while he is still here with us. My mother is blind, but real feisty and tough as nails (she's an appalacian mountain girl) she hide her blindness for 5 years.
Patsi, your a good daughter of the South, I bet you make awesome sweet potatoes. Any chance of sharing your recipe?

"About the only true thing in the whole mythology is that these pitiful European strangers would not have survived their first several years in "New England" were it not for the aid of Wampanoag people. What Native people got in return for this help was genocide, theft of our lands, and never-ending repression. We are treated either as quaint relics from the past, or are, to most people, virtually invisible....
The myth of Thanksgiving, served up with dollops of European superiority and manifest destiny, just does not work for many people in this country. As Malcolm X once said about the African-American experience in America, "We did not land on Plymouth Rock. Plymouth Rock landed on us." Exactly."
[Mahtowin Munro (Lakota) and Moonanum James (Wampanoag) from link above]

Happy Thanksgiving to all here. Try not to strain a gut muscle with dinner today. I can't wait. I am thankful I don't have to cook today. All I had to do was make a chocolate yummy, a delicious dessert that I couldn't find a way to get one more calorie or fat gram into.
Also a late Happy Birthday to Craig.
I do have a couple of questions that are plaguing me. You guys do seem to know something about just about everything.
First: Who has all of our money? I have been listening to the experts for a while now but still haven't figured out where all the money we have all lost went. Someone must have found it. Is it just too complicated to explain? Is it in the pockets of all the CEOs?
Second question: How did Ann Coulter break her jaw? In my experience most broken jaws I have seen, I have seen quite a few, involved someone elses fist.
Enjoy the day.

I'm thankful I'm not former Senator Phil Gramm . Noted UBS bank lobbyist and the man who would be Fed Chairman . May have a problem. ----
LUCERNE, Switzerland (Reuters) - Swiss bank UBS, at the center of a U.S. investigation into offshore services it provided to wealthy Americans, said on Thursday it had uncovered a "limited number" of tax fraud cases.
http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE4AQ2K520081127
This man's wife sat on the Eron board. Phil Gramm is one of the architects of this pile of rubble, we call an economy. To be fair to Phil, lot's people on that project, but that's Phil Gramm's stamp on the bottom of the plans . We were sold the plans to the Emerald City, but we built Bartertown .
People wondering where the money went ? Phil's front door is a good place to start. Maybe some young Federal Prosecutor is serving " Sweet Subpoena Pie " to Phil this holiday season.

Turkey day stuffings
Since Plymouth, Thanksgiving Day has seen its share of controversy
By Brock N. Meeks
Chief Washington correspondent
MSNBC
updated 11:11 a.m. ET Nov. 23, 2004
WASHINGTON - Lobbying, intrigue, inflation and controversy, such are the historical ingredients in the recipe for Thanksgiving Day.
Most historical accounts of the nation’s first Thanksgiving put the date sometime in December of 1621 when the Pilgrims of New World America held a three-day harvest celebration. The elementary school textbook scene of Native Americans and Pilgrims sharing a banquet table, however, isn’t easily digested by everyone. The United American Indians of New England have, since 1970, held a “National Day of Mourning” on Thanksgiving Day in Plymouth, Mass., to highlight the plight of Native Americans dating from the arrival of the Mayflower.

Ok having posted this, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. I will be celebrating with two other Americans and two Belgians on Saturday evening. I am making homemade American-style brownies and fresh cranberry sauce.
Cheers

Rez I was educated on the issue at Evergreen. I understand the frustration but I am also of mixed mind with it. I think Thanksgiving is a holiday for all of us who are American. I think that had the white settlers treated the Natives fairly and honorably, this country would be in a far better place than it is. I hope sometime we will all find a true common humanity that unites all peoples.

Kenya: 'I don't know' if Obama born in U.S
"In an exclusive interview with WND today, Ogego was specifically asked whether Obama is a natural-born U.S. citizen.
"I don't know," he said with a tone of irritation. "You should ask your government. I know his father is Kenyan."
He continued with a rhetorical question: "Obama is an American, isn't he?"
On Nov. 6, only two days after the election, Detroit radio talk-show hosts Mike Clark, Trudi Daniels and Marc Fellhauer on WRIF's "Mike In The Morning" called the Embassy of Kenya in Washington, D.C., to speak with Ambassador Ogego.
The interview with the Kenyan ambassador was widely publicized after he called President-elect Barack Obama's Kenyan birthplace a "well-known" attraction:"

Rezdog- thank you, couldn't find the brokenclaw link though, would love to see it. So are you in Oklahoma? My cousins are Cherokee but my aunt somehow ended up with the Navahos in Gallup, New Mexico which is where my uncle met her. My grandfather and uncle were out there building houses with the Navaho. I rode out to California once with this rip roaring asshole who wouldn't stop for anything but a restroom. Went all the way from the coast till I got to Gallup and absolutely insisted, really had to put up a fight. Just knew I had to stop there. Called my Mom that night and she told me about the family connection to Gallup. Lots of towns between here and there, know my ancestors were traveling with me that day.

Dogs
Just saw your request so this may arrive too late for you. The Sweet Hots are one of my inventions that you just go by taste.
Drain large can of yams
spread in single layer of buttered baking dish
Lightly salt
1/2 liquor and 1/2 pineapple juice to slightly short of covering yams
Sprinkle with pepper flakes
Evenly spread crumbled brown sugar over top
Top with pineapple slices
Cover and let sit for at least an hour (I sometimes make it up night before and then refrigerate)
Bake until heated through (pineapple slices browned on top.)
You can serve right from baking dish or drain most of liquid, remove pineapple and then whip with melted butter.

We had turkey in Toledo at daughter’s place. Her man, the pilot, got called to work Wednesday; he had to fly to Miami FL to fly a big shot rich person somewhere.
He missed Thanksgiving, so the bird was oven-roasted instead of deep fried. I prefer the old-style way anyway—I am tired of those damn deep fried turkeys.
We took both cars because my wife went a day early to bake and prepare stuff…I had to wait until Thursday because we have an older big black dog and they have 2 Weimaraners and we also have a Jack Russell…a lot of dogs for an overnight stay.
I love her Weimaraners…they are just great dogs! If I was a country gentleman with room to spare I would have a Weimaraner too.
I am home now and of course my wife is hitting the stores at 5 AM to grab some presents, so she stayed another night.
And dig this: Gas in Toledo is $1.51 a gallon!! I overfilled my tank at that price.
How’s this for timing? As I got to Toledo, “Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie came on the radio…I got to hear the whole thing before I got to the house.
I got to see the Lions get creamed by the Tennessee Titans but then the women took over the TV for “Survivor” and some Hallmark movie.
And I hope you gentle folk had a turkey or something else nice.

Just got home from my sister's house, and my one word description is noisy. One four year-old, one three year-old, and one two year-old, all boys, with three strong men to rassle with, and you can't get other than noise. Those boys screamed and laughed all night. The two year-old fell aside in his car seat as his mom was buckling him in.
Menu was turkey and taters with great gravy, white and wild rice pilaf, and green bean casserole - very plain.
I had made my two different apple pies yesterday, one of which is very labor intensive and there was pumpkin pie. No big whoop but very nice, and extremely hot - don't know how they did that but it was very very warm.
Champagne of course, and cheese tasting before dinner.
The best part was a cd of my mom playing the piano as we ate.
I hope you all have as much to be thankful for as I do.

Bethy and Dex -- sounds like you had a wonderful day. Same here. Food, family and friends. Smaller group than usual but a great day. My granddaughter and I watched the Tinkerbell movie, read Nemo and Dorie books and colored in the Tinkerbell and her Fairy Friends coloring book.

German CO2 emissions fall below Kyoto requirements
Berlin - Germany has cut its greenhouse gas emissions to below levels required under the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, the government in Berlin announced on Friday. Europe's biggest economy's CO2 emissions, which are blamed for causing global warming, last year came in at 22.4 per cent below Kyoto's base years of 1990 and 1995, the environment ministry said in a statement.

egads, now that's a sticky wicket! what is this world coming to...cricket tourney called!
"The tournament was to be staged next week in India, with teams from Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa and England having qualified this year.
But with the tournament now rescheduled to next year, teams will have to re-qualify under a CA ruling.
That could turn state against state with bitter disputes over who are the rightful qualifiers....."

I just found this book online. It is called "Behind the scenes, or, Thirty Years a Slave, and Four Years in the White House" by Elizabeth Keckley. She was a Black slave who was freed and become a close confidant to former First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. I am so enjoying this book, not only for the historical significance, but also for the excellent writing by Ms. Keckley

Hi everyone. Tomorrow we are having an American style Thanksgiving Dinner at my ex's home with his American husband, a woman friend of mine that was a colleague and her husband (American) and a Belgian with an American boyfriend who works at a military base. It will be the most Americans I've been around in one place in Europe. :)
I will eat carefully... I am making the cranberry sauce. My American brownies have been taken off the menu because there are 3 pies... Pumpkin, Pecan and Blueberry.

any chance some of the recent pirate show was for diversionary purposes? tactic to keep the indian navy busy while the terroists crept in by sea.
"...an Indian navy spokesman confirmed that the terrorists entered Mumbai without detection by taking a sea route. Starting from a base in Gujarat to the north of Mumbai, they made their way to the Gateway of India at Mumbai's southern tip and another landing point on the peninsula 14 nautical miles away; they killed one boatman in the process."

"...Asked whether there can be any connection between the pirates and the attacks in Mumbai, Vice Admiral Sunil K Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, said such a thing cannot be ruled out.
"I cannot say but I will not rule it out. I cannot say whether there is connection or not. All I am saying is that we very strongly suspect such a thing can happen," he told reporters on board the INS Tir.
"It is a fact that our action against the Somali pirates in the recent past has got the Indian Navy into focus particularly in that area", he said, adding this also brought in a danger...Indian Navy being targetted by these people also in addition to the terrorists," he said.
"These bad elements unfortunately have a fair amount of illegal money at their disposal. Even if Somali pirates were not taking direct action against us, there is every possibility of them pumping in the money into such organisations which are capable of taking terrorist action against us", he said."

Sorry folks, but I'm drivin' around southern Colorado today.
This is the view east and a little north from Alamosa, the image is Mt. Blanca in the Sangre' de Cristos. This time of the year, the Sangre' de Cristos begin the cycle that they get their name from. When a southern low comes across Albuquerque in the winter, this valley, and those mountains, all turn white. The the winter sunset over the San Juans to the west, make everything pink. Different shades of pink every sunset all through the winter. They didn't just pull a name out of the hat when they named them The Blood of Christ .
This wetland, is at 8,000 ft. , that mountain is 14,345 feet.
I promise you it is the biggest mountain you've never heard of. It is absolutely huge. Just to the right is Ft. Garland, Kit Carson served out of Ft. Garland.

Solar,
The only way I know that you can show your picture here is to scan it onto your computer and then put it onto a site you can link for us to go to. You can scan a picture onto your computer (using your printer, as long as it also scans) and save it in order to upload it to a site of your choice.
There's a site called blog spot (or Blogger) where you can open an account and have your own blog site there if you want. It instructs you how to set up your own site (and is free). It seems fairly easy to follow, as it gives detailed instructions.
This is the link:
https://www.blogger.com/start2
I've heard others here recommend a photo posting site also, but I don't know about that one, although I've seen others use and link it.

Just create an account and then upload any photos from your computer. You can then share them with anyone just by pasting the URL here.

Hey Solar, Yeah, I like to have a chat with Jack, sometimes it feels like he is an old friend. I too have been enjoying your universe and Jesus stuff and chats with Chloe and Patsi.. Am pagan so am not too into the Jesus stuff , but appreciate the history and your unbelievably vast knowledge!! Less fudge, more chocolates- in the summer I would sit down for 10 minutes while waiting to stir the batch!

That's a lot of books you've written! I didn't realize there were so many.

OSH-- No I specifically told Garth I was doing it on my own, and would not show it to him until finished.
I take a lot of shots at the business end of music in the book, and did not want the reprocussions aimed at him. And I'll take some shots because of what I have to say about his own record label's treatment of him, I promise you...oh well...
(I wrote all label-generated info from 1990-on about Garth's music, though, and therefore had all the interviews and quotes from each album and event. Also had access to all archives. The book is about his career -- not a "personal" memoir...)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Online dating site eHarmony will create a service for same-sex matching in a settlement of a 2005 complaint that the company's failure to offer such a service was discriminatory.

One thing is I know you're in touch with energy, but that is more just magick, not exclusive to paganism, which is just a belief in more than 1 god. I believe in the duality of god(s) although I work more with godesses, I noticed Bear is into the Secret, that is based on witchcraft and Buddhism. Always kinda cracked me up all the Oprah fans getting into it, oblivious to the fact that they were practicing very basic witchcraft-just not called that. The first page acknowledges this by naming a Coven, but you wouldn't know it if you weren't familiar with the coven.

I'm not sure what to say to all of that, because I know so little about it. You're right, I do believe in energy. But I'm not sure why you called it magic.
What I really most deeply believe in is nature, and all it entails. And I like to think of it as 'Mother Nature'. To me nature is all there is, it's everything.

Any experience with it Patsi? It seems kind of corny to me and I guess I really don't care to share much info with absolutely complete strangers. I don't meet many men here, live across the st. from the harbor- but those coming in on boats seem to be all drunkards, or married. There are enough single men on the island, but they just ne'er do wells. I have a big house overlooking the harbor and the packy so I am of course a prime target for them. Guess it's like that in most tourist areas.

again----which is fun for me cos ---it looks like i missed some things, XR is really up on all of this Jesus stuff too -and it has been a lot of fun arguing with him about it--
Chole----Hello---thanks for the link-----thanks for your support -as ---thanks for being you---nature and all it entails-----excellent ----
Jamie ---it registered on the site that you provided ---ill try to do something with it later------I have a wonderful picture of the Universe that shows and explains the inflation of it from the start,,,shows how many years in between each phase of evolution that the universe went thru before there were stars,,,and after---and it expanding,,it gives one a pretty good sense of it all,, i use it as my pc background sometimes, thank you

Regarding Oldseahag's post on age...
Well Sea, I'm 49 too and I must say I don't like it ONE BIT !! I was always the "youngest" in the crowd I was with, probably because my birthday is in August and end August was the cut off for going to kindergarten if you were already 5 years old. Those in September on had to wait a year.
Anyway, I am accepting that I am getting old and realize I am truly middle-aged but I still feel like the goofy young guy I was. One thing that helps... I love humor and we have a fun working relationship in my shop... my employees are my colleagues more than my subordinates (except if I lose my temper, but they understand that passes). We have mostly a good time in a high stress business and we joke and act silly while still maintaining a friendly and warm atmosphere.
49 ... bleech!

Ha, OSH -- I have a friend who says too many are looking for a "nurse or a purse."
No, I don't know anything about eHarmony except what was posted about the same sex deal. There was a time I'd have said, "Stay Away!" from those sorts of meet-ups. But I have a friend in NY who met her fabulous third husband through an ad in Village Voice, and another friend here in TN who met the love of her life online. So who knows?
If I were in the market, I think I'd keep all options open.
But at my age I am more in the Janis Ian mode when she sang Pass the Tea and Sympathy (for the good old days long gone...) cool song and I bet it's on YouTube...if so, I'll post!

"Fare thee well
Trade in all our words for tea and sympathy
Wonder why we tried, for things that could never be
Play our hearts lament, like an unrehearsed symphony
Not intend
To leave this castle full of empty rooms
Our love the captive in the tower never rescued
And all the victory songs
Seem to be playing out of tune
But it's not the way
That it has to be
Don't trade our love for tea and sympathy
'Cause it's not the way
That it has to be
You begin
And all your words fall to the floor and break like china cups
And the waitress grabs a broom and tries to sweep them up
I reach for my tea and slowly drink in"

Off to my sister's for another turkey meal. I left everything at her house - HA! But I did get kudos for how fast I cleaned her kitchen last night - well, not all cleaned but quite decent. I keep telling them the first thing to do is stack the dinner dishes and put all the sterling in one pot and let it soak - then there's all sorts of space to put the rest of it. But do they listen? You know the answer is NO.
And then the young women, my niece's, take over and I refuse to tell people any more to get out of the way and I'll do it. They're what my bil calls Young Mothers on the March - don't argue with them. they're such darling darling dolls!

"What fun, and I'm glad to see Obama has brought Powers on back on board, the woman has a top notch mind when it comes to foreign policy."
======================
"The problem for those who favor a strong US-Israel relationship is that Power seems obsessed with Israel, and in a negative way. ... And it is clear that her approach to addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would be for the US to behave in a more "even handed" fashion, which of course means withdrawing US support for Israel, and instead applying more pressure on Israel for concessions.
Power appears to support slashing, if not eliminating, military aid to our ally (surrounded by 300 million people who wish to destroy her) and giving it to the Palestinians, whose charters (whether the Hamas or Fatah version) advocate the destruction of Israel.
Power also showed her animus toward Israel in another instance, appearing to argue with the New York Times for more negative coverage of Israel in the paper."

Some very cool music last night and this am....Stevie Nicks, Bobby Darin, the Cowbells, Dixie Cups...love that David Gilmour guitar...and Ernie Kovaks channeling Devo-moves to top it off! (Or did Devo channel Ernie-moves....)
Interesting that Janis Ian could write such powerful songs about time passing while still a very young woman...but then, it was when I was very young that I fell in love with songs like "Tea and Sympathy." Music makes it go 'round...no doubt....

patd -- Mozart! Yes, yes...of course, few prodigies have been found in fields like writing, painting, sculpture -- different set of skills and brain cells than those involving mathematics and music. (There's that young girl, Akiane (?) who was sent from God to paint...and is amazingly accomplished....but few others.)
I had an interesting talk with a young woman who cut my hair at oneof those inexpensive "no appointment" places. She was a tremendous hair cutter -- and my hair is hard to cut...thick, coarse, and full of cowlicks....but she took great time and excruciating pains to be precise...in our conversation she mentioned that the only classes she really liked in school were math and science. She then said that since she'd been very young, she could do two things well -- math problems and hair cutting. And I thought, of course, that's where this precision comes from.

patsi, and then there are those who have synesthia and see music as colors. this link and several others are quite fascinating about this and other mental phenomena, talent or gifts. http://cabinet-of-wonders.blogspot.com/2007/10/synesthesia-flavor-of-music-color-of.html

More on sweet potatoes.
The only brand of canned sweet potatoes I use is Bruce's; they are consistently good.
Take three cans of potatoes, drain all except 1-1/2 cups of the liquid. Put the potatoes and liquid in a suitable casserole. Dump in 1-1/2 cups of light brown sugar, 1/2 stick of unsalted butter, and about 1/4 cup of good quality clover honey. Season with freshly ground black pepper and a sprinkling of sea salt. Sometimes, I will grind a little nutmeg and sprinkle on top.
Bake in 325-deg oven for a couple of hours (uncovered) until the remaining liquid is reduced and the sugar and honey and butter have infused the potatoes. The potatoes may be gently turned as necessary.
Towards the end of the baking, taste test the potatoes and correct the seasoning to your taste.
The same recipe can be prepared in the microwave with a medium setting. Cook for about 1/2 an hour checking periodically.

My 10:13. Should have specified three _large_ cans of potatoes. Looking at the spelling of potatoes, I had a thought of how close Dan Quayle was to being right.

i'll admit it, this year's traditional Trail Mix Turkey Silde Show has been a fraud. Earlier, that was the bird i cooked last year, and yes, we end with store-bought sandwich meat. Book writing got in the way this year, so had to go with deli turkey and a sliced ham from the internet. Next year i promise a legitimate show.

patd,
That blog you linked on synesthesia (sensory crossover) was very interesting. I took this quote from it with me:
"Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and . . . stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to 'walk about' into a hitherto unknown world. If the answer is yes, what more do you want?"
........................
Patsi, I read what you said about math, music and precision hair haircutting all being similar thought processes, and agree with you (once I thought about it a little). Makes sense.

Tomorrow the History channel will have a totally new series on called Universe for 2008 starting at 12 pm central---gonna tape it and watch later on-----see u later
