President-elect Barack Obama used his first post-election meeting with President George W. Bush last week to urge a speedy bailout of the auto industry, but the incumbent's party is slowing things down.
Top Senate Republicans said Tuesday that this year's $700 billion financial industry bailout program should not be the source of aid for struggling domestic automakers. Meanwhile, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer raised the possibility of calling members back in December to deal with the auto issue. More on this story.
Detroit auto makers might have to wait until Obama, along with new Democratic members of Congress, get in place next year. On Sunday, Obama discussed his thoughts for a bailout in a CBS "60 Minutes" interview, saying it should be "conditioned on labor, management, suppliers, lenders, all the stakeholders coming together with a plan" for "a sustainable U.S. auto industry. ... So that we are creating a bridge loan to somewhere as opposed to a bridge loan to nowhere."

That is the problem. If the banks were lending, the car companies could go chapter 11 and reorganize, but the banks aren't lending yet. That means the tax payer has to abe the bank. I don't like it, but I can understand the bail out, particularly since there actually seem to be a majority on both sides of the aisle coming up with reasons for doing so.
My only demand would be a top to bottom scrubbing of all executive luxuries (Romney's dad did this before), $1 a year salaries until they came up with a complete business plan. Ping is right only to the extent that the legacy costs are monumental and hurts them competitively even with foreign cars built here who get breaks that the Detroit makers don't get. It's time for tit for tat in the competition department world wide.
A universal health care system of some sort for these major corporations would help.

The companies where I live have often held the same view on wages. Pay less money per hour to their workers, make up for it by giving out quarterly bonuses. But, most places now can't afford to give out bonuses. At least not to hourly workers.

Meanwhile my Republican senator will be up for re-election in 2 years. Part of his core is those old Reagan democrats, a great many of them retired UAW workers who got rich enough to vote Republican.

Yes there are many retired officers who line their pockets. They would not be candidates for this type of position.
I've known generals who have an incredibly low threshold when it comes to criticism of their former brothers who feed at the trough. That would be the type of candidate I would choose.
The chosen one would be placed on active duty with the taxpayers paying his pitifully low salary.

Patsi, yes, I saw the map and then went to the narratives of the incidents. The masters of many of the attacked vessels were successful in evading the pirates. There are lessons to be learned from them.
At some point, it has to become cost effective for the vessel owners to put trained fighters with heavy ordnance on the vessels. It appears that we haven't reached that point.

This "pollution" tax is one of the suggestions of "Hot, Flat, and Crowded" to force people to stop using oil and spur development of green technology. The higher gas tax could be offset with some sort of rebate to low income folks so that what would otherwise be regressive would help them during the transition.
The U.S. either gets ahead of the curve or gets left in the dust. Third world is not a great place to live.

Good to know. I remember when Barry did some album of standards, I phoned a friend who worked for Arista in LA and asked for a copy. He was FLOORED. Said: "Jesus, I thought you were more of a Steve Earle kind of person."
I laughed because I've always had a soft spot for "some" Manilow tunes. Others...well...NOT. ut I remember really liking that particular album of standards.
Plus he gave healthy checks to a LOT of Democratic candidates this year....

The problem that i have some times with unions is that , not only that if i want to do a city, state, or gov, job, i have to pay scale---now this is fine with me,,,,what i object to is that they force me to pay all the benefit costs,,,,i know damn well that all of the money that i put in are not going into the worker retirement actt,,,,,,,,it also goes into the greedy pockets of the leaders--------this is a major problem and i also think is the way to keep small contractors out of the bidding process--------Universal health ins....would solve this in a major way?????

Jamie -- maybe you remember this story....there was an incident in a cafe in LA years ago...Bary Manilow was in there with some record people, and another artist was at another booth -- made some really ugly comments about Manilow, in a loud voice. I remember reading about it and thinking the other guy must be a complete asshole. But now I can't recall who it was....

I use start logic. Might switch to globat though. Startlogic was a cool little co. in Phoenix and use to get all these computer geeks for techs. They were great, but now they have outsourced (they say to Canada, but I can't understand them, sure sound like they are from India to me, and not techies either) . We built our website on dreamweaver, didn't want to use all those templates all the hosts offer. Also, learned the hard way that hosts change platforms and then your site becomes obsolete , it remains but no way of making changes.

They offer a cart , set it up last week only to find out that it is limited to 15 items, but for 30 dollars a month more I could have more items. This has been a pain in the neck. Ran a national ad and of course the holidays are here, just about the worst time possible. I don't ship in the summer so I hadn't made any changes to my products till last month and then I found that it was impossible to do. I'll check out Google, probably helps with the searches too. I love their Analytics. Just added that to my new site, screwed up a bit though- some of my html code is showing on my home page! Haven't had the courage to go back and change it yet.

We're at $1.60 here in Houston. I have alot of friends in the oil industry and they say that jobs here are safe until oil hits $40.00/barrel. At that point a lot of new development becomes marginal.
I do know that alot of refiners in the area are putting off signifiant increases in capacity....several are already so far along that they will finish.

the only time we've ever bought a Chrysler product was a 1984 small Dodge Ram truck (they don't make them anymore)..... it was my truck and since I work at home, it lasted a long time..... I thought it was wonderful that an American car company made such a trouble free vehicle..... then I found out it had a Mitsubishi engine in it.....

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation reports that there are over $65bn in credit default swaps naming GM as the reference credit. According to its most recent financial statements, GM has a total of $36 to 38bn in outstanding long-term debt, the kind associated with CDSs. Obviously not all of the protection buyers hold GM debt. There is a lot of money bet against GM’s survival, and the holders of that protection have a real reason to want GM to fail. I’d call that gambling, and I explain why in this diary. It’s important to note that the losses won’t affect GM. Only the protection sellers will have to pay off the bets.

It looks to me as if he is putting his Illinois and campaign folks in the White house and Kitchen cabinet. He is drawing on the Clinton old hands and deputies to handle the Washington and world wide connections.
It actually isn't a bad idea ... Hit the ground running with people who know their way around while keeping your trusted people close for advice and in as deputies in training.
Get a couple of years under their belts and they will be the "Obama old hands" for the next four to six years as the original cabinet goes on about their business if they desire to do so.

Matt Stoller wrote a piece yesterday about the fight over the Energy and Commerce Committee chairmanship between John Dingell and Henry Waxman and he points out that the outcome of this is probably far more important to a progressive agenda than all this sturm and drang about Lieberman and he's right. Waxman is an effective, green progressive and he knows how to get things done. Dingel is an elder who is discredited by his relationship with the auto industry and the NRA. If pragmatic change rather than milquetoast status quo bipartisanship is what people voted for, this is where the action is.

The biggest problem with having 24 hour cable news, with big stories on heavy rotation is that anything longer than two days feels as if it has been going on forever.
The concept of Clinton as SoS has only been out there for a week. Whoever leaked on the Obama team (probably to try to get some reaction) should be given a basement office for the duration for not realizing that there shouldn't have been anything more than 48 hours between the leak and the appointment.
That 48 hour decision cycle should be added as a corollary to the dump bad news on Friday night rule.

I have worked with and negotiated contracts with Teamsters and other Unions to great success for both parties.

You are right on and this was my point on the social program elements - when I say be honest about what is to be accomplished. No American should have to worry about healthcare - but it does require a two way commentment to good health.
Put it all together - if we are going to go to a National Healthcare Safety net then this will help the auto industry.
Also on the individual transaction level BANKS ARE LOANING MONEY.

As one of the owners of GM, I think a partnership with the Chinese is just what we need. We could move all of our production to China(it's not like you could tell the difference anyway) Then we would take back our dominance in the world. We might have to keep making a line of pickup here. You have to have something to hang a flag on for commercials. Maybe the Vet or a Cadillac. But there is no need to get carried away.

While I think the auto executives shouldn't be handed the money unless a whole lot of strings are attached, I find it amazing that when it is white collar jobs at risk, the money just flows hand over fist.
When it is blue collar jobs and middle class families, all of sudden the treasury is empty.

I think we have another failing of the media - did we get the straight info on the bill for the bail-out? I don't remember hearing anything re the real wording of the bill, and now it seems there were no strings attached.
I think we need some people who know how to write bills clearly and openly, and people in the media who will get the bills and put them into real English for us.
I'm tired of hearing that a bill was poorly written and allowed for abuses.

Solar - I agree with the possibility of Allison Stewart's helping msnbc, but I'm not sure she isn't aimed at the political death of the Clinton's, which seems to be the raison d'etre of msnbc. She used to align herself with KO when at the station.
Karl Rove was just on Fox telling Hannity that he thought Obama's picks were very very good, with possible exception of Emanuel - but that he was making good choices.

Animal Control- I like it too! Have had a lot of fun singing that song at the end of the night! My old neighborhood bar was owned by an old Italian who sang Irish tenor, used to be a singing waiter in NY where he met his wife who was a burlesque dancer. Anyways, he weighed about 325 and would sometimes sing to us al, that song and others like Old New York. Lots of fun at that bar, used to go out and swing dance in the parking lot cause the bar was too small,but the paving used to hurt when I'd fall on my head.

I've still got tomatoes from my method. "go out the night of a killing frost and pick them by the light of a flashlight". I could have left them on the vine for a few more weeks the weather man lied. but they have been ripening at just about the right speed. I will have some for thanks giving but they will be gone by Christmas.

I have not gone into the "natural born" requirement for POTUS.
Leo Donofrio argues (he's not alone) that SoetorObama does not qualify as "natural born" even if he was born in HI. That's because SoetorObama had dual citizenship (from his father -- UK and Colonies Subject/National) at birth.
US citizen is not the same as "natural born" citizen.

Road kill chili,
for hippies,
not vegitarian hippies
A pound of fresh road kill, or substitute a 1 lb of cheap ground turkey
3 table spoons or more depending on how spicy you want it of chili powder.
1 teaspoon of cumin
1/2 onion chopped
2 or3 cloves of garlic, mashed in one of those mashers.
1/2 bell pepper chopped
1 can of tomatoes and chilis, kind of like the Rotel ones but look for cheaper ones.
some v8 juice for a little liquid, if you have an open bottle in the fridg. like I did tonight.
or a small can of tomato sauce and water
Combine the meat spices onion and bell pepper. Cook until meat is almost done make sure the meat is crumbly. Add tomatoes and liquid bring to a boil then turn down the heat and simmer.
stir it once it a while but then you know that or soon will learn.
Put 2 cups of brown rice on to cook according to directions on the package.
Serve the chili in a soupbowl over a 1/2 cup of the brown rice. you could have more rice if you like it.

I tend to just eat whole beans cooked with a little hamm or meat flavoring of some kind.
When we were young my mother flavored the beans with the bacon rind or the ham rind. We were a bit poor. The meat skins didn't taste bad and we ate them but some times not all the pig hair was removed and a little stubble would kinda scratch as it went down the throat.
I really loved the beans they served at school. they had real chunks of ham in them. I had never seen that before.

Xrep, That is always something to remember. I've had to remind several of the temp places of that when the tried to short my check for some reason.
I told one idiot that was shorting me $15 that all it took was $35 dollars to file a law suite and if he didn't believe I would spend $35 to get $15 then he had better think again. When put that way they have always paid up, so far.

Seen a 30.00.00 drop in my electric bill---have been shutting off anything that does not to be on ,, microwave,,it makes no sense to me to keep it on 23 hours during the day----i think that actual time use is about 20 minn or less on any given day,,,this and the toaster,any kitchen appliance is unplugged until used now

that is so true,,,i have done it myself---but i have a friend that used to own a wharehoused GM machine part in st joe michigan,,,,they owed him and 3 other partners over a million dollars and would not pay up----he had over 4 million in inventory of theirs and rented another place to store it all in,,meanwhile he paid 28.00 to lien ---after 2 years they finally got paid only about 80% of it but all it took was 28.00bucks,,,and the lawyer fees ,,,he now owns the mortgage co, and my partner---first one i ever had,,,know him for 18 years or so

I will be filing papers in D.C. federal court to have this "so-called contest" thoroughly investigated. This is clearly a plot by the Obama forces to make "conventional wisdom" look silly, and grossly misinformed.

The Romans had to bring in 4 legions to re-conquer the tiny population of Britain. Judea, on the other hand, could muster 200,000 militia men and women, conceivably necessitating a like number of Romans to subdue the land, iow, 70 % of the entire Roman army. What a break that would have been for Britain, Pontus, the Germans, and the Parthians.

XR - I've heard Rove make some other evaluations re both dems and repubs that I have completely agreed with. I suspect the man just likes to talk about politics and smart moves - he needs another career now. He has to prove to everyone now he has judgement, and I think he can tell who is good at the same game.
Solar - I surf and always check to see who is speaking and which show is on. I wandered who the woman was talking and she turned out to be from the Cleveland Plain Dealer. I gave her a couple of listens to her words, and she wasn't lethal about HRC so listened to her and Allison for a few minutes. I steer clear of KO and Tweety and Schuster and Contessa etc.

Remember when these same republicans used to demand legal reform to stop all the frivolous lawsuits that are jamming our courts ?

You haven't produced a shred of evidence that Senator Obama is anyone other than who he says he is. XR - it's not patience because I never heard Rove talk when he ran things. He's got less job security now his plan to take over USA failed.
I personally think he looks like a kid who wasn't easily accepted by other kids - he flat looks like a "sissy" - and who developed talents and techniques for manipulation. I think he's a bit of a gambler who plays his own game of virtual politics, kinda like everyone here betting on the electoral college vote.
I have heard him make some really partisan comments which are boring because they are so
derivative - but I've also heard him be spot on.
I suspect he likes to imagine himself as knowing how to play the game better than anyone else and can see the other side's arguments. I'm interested in that person's take on things. He's for sure not going to change my mind.
