Barack Obama's formula for making change might seem a bit contradictory, but it makes sense. His two most important personnel choices -- Joe Biden for Vice President and Rahm Emanuel for Chief of Staff -- signal an intention to change Washington from the inside. Both know how the game is played up and down Pennsylvania Avenue.
Unless, of course, this all means that Obama is signaling to Washington that there won't be much change -- but I doubt that. If you want to blow up a building, after all, it helps to at least consult someone who has seen the blueprints.
An associate of Obama's when he was in the Illinois Legislature once told me that he is keenly aware of what he doesn't know about being president. That is a good sign. Because presidents who think they know it all usually wind up in a world of trouble.
Presidents like Jimmy Carter, who approached Washington with a chip on his shoulder and a bevy of aides who had even less experience in the nation's capital than he had, soon found themselves undermined by a city that is well schooled in the business of tearing down an unfriendly White House.
Changing this city from the inside is about the only way to get it done.

Question from yesterday -- Who are the women that Obama will be appointing? Also -- who are the people of color?
I can understand he doesn't want to choose according to Column A and Column B -- but are there no qualified people in his sphere that are black, brown or female?

Obama has former Clinton people that saw the mistakes Clinton made in the early days of his administration. They don't want a repeat of that either. (Or so the pundits say, LOL)
I'm very concerned that everyone is expecting Obama to walk on water and turn water into wine immediately. We've (the royal "we") dug a huge hole for ourselves and it isn't going to be fixed overnight. That won't stop the Republicans and their 24/7 hate fest media from attacking Obama as moving too slow. They want to see him fail and it is unfortunate because it is critical that partisan politics be shelved for awhile so things can get turned around. I hope Republican leadership wakes up and actually tries to work with Obama to get this economic situation cleared up. (Whomever Republican leadership is these days.)

I really wouldn't get my undies in a bundle over minority appointments to Obama's staff.
He needs to get the BEST people in these positions. For me personally, I don't give a rat's ass about the color of their skin or their gender as long as they are the most qualified.
Why do we always get caught up in such minutiae?

I think the Boone Pickens plan would have passed in a different environment. Unfortunately as election day came closer, Schwarzenegger announced major budget shortfall INCREASES and called for an increase in the sale tax.
Coupled with the confusion over prop 7, when voters in Cal are confused they vote no.

The Newsweek 2008 election project team was C-Span yesterday.
Evan Thomas (Love that guy) said that he thought Obama doesn't care what favor your are, it's what you bring to the table.
He's not going to pick people according to where they are on the rainbow of interest groups.
Thomas also pointed out that Obama's campagin had done a good job of keeping interest groups at arms length.
As for my prediction of Pickens being seen going in the side door of the White House.
Here's the new chief of staff introducing Pickens in Chicago in Oct.

Hey Craig,
Now, it's time for Obama the pragmatist and I think his moves so far show us that facet is emerging.
There was a pretty good editorial in the Economist the other day about Obama's election win, and their conclusion was that such a great victory engenders unreasonably great expectations.
Obama's need to get out the vote required getting a lot of people invested. It will be very interesting to see how many people will demand a return on that investment, and how fast.
The Economist editorial noted that, to achieve his goals, rhetoric and symbolism will be useful, but detail and dedication is what will be needed.
I like the Emmanuel pick, which I interpret as both a symbol of his seriousness and a practical step towards that detail and dedication. I like the names being bandied about for cabinet posts, too. Really thoughtful choices will go a long way in buying time and confidence to get the programs in place.
That useful rhetoric will also be needed in spades; I hope he realizes we can be inspired to accept the ultimate benefits of realism along with those of hope.
Big picture, I think he needs to re-set expectations realistically in a way that somehow does not disappoint too many, too much. Then, he needs to keep his promise about being honest with us. Set the goals, and meet them, step-by-step, in a way that is as transparent as possible.
I'm confident.

"Fact is, from an investment standpoint, oil might be a good bet now considering how low it is, but that won't move the industry in the direction it will eventually go."
Pogo, I think oil still has further to go on the downside.
Countries have obligated themselves for their optimistically forecast oil revenues--as the spread between marginal cost of production and sales price declines, they have little choice but to increase production--at least up to the point where they are bumping up against fixed costs.
If I were going to buy right now, I'd certainly hedge my positions.

I completely agree. I would rather Obama pick the best and the brightest. And I would rather he didn't hurry any faster than he had to. Rushing things can contribute to mistakes.
All this talk from the republicans---He's choosing partisan people, he's taking too long, he's not choosing enough women or minority people, whatever ---- is just to create the image that he doesn't know what he doing, because they need him to fail.
Just like they needed Bill Clinton to be discredited, they will be spending all their time and trouble trying to point out all his faults and shortcomings. IMO people like GORDO will be around the whole time he is president trying to come up with something on him. Thank goodness we don't have the special prosecutor anymore that has nothing better to do than investigate baseless claims against the Pres. Maybe he won't have to put up with 8 yrs. of distraction like Clinton did.

One thing Pickens is going to move on with others is our fleet of heavy trucks, and converting them to CNG. That will be a revolution in our energy use, and none of us will even know it. He's been working the big fleet operators.
I think that was probably the point of that Calif. prop. The conversion of state, city, and county vehicles to CNG.
One thing about Calif. they're up against what the founders didn't like about a pure democracy. When they looked at Athens they saw you could get voted off the island pretty fast. All those props are killing the ability of government to act there.

"Those are just distractions."
Certified copies of Obama’s Application and Admission forms for Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law School
These documents are important. What nationality did SoetorObama list - American? Indonesian? Kenyan?
Impossible to get info from either Indonesia or Kenya.
Just consider Indonesia. (Was an Indonesian passport used for his 1981 trip to Pakistan?)

From TD Blog:
Dual Citizenship Makes Obama Ineligible Under Article II
"He’s lied about Kenya, at least by omission, for months/years, so why should I assume he isn’t lying about Indonesia? Note Kenyan Citizenship automatically lapses if it isn’t renewed at age 21, Indonesian Citizenship doesn’t. If he was an Indonesian Citizen he would have to actively repudiate that Citizenship. Did he? Has he? Because if he hasn’t, Senator Obama is Dual National Indonesian at this moment, subject to the Laws of BOTH Countries, equally."

diva, this mentioned recently in spytalk about appt of intelligence head:
"Rep. Jane Harman, in particular, might like the job. By all accounts the feisty Democrat earned as much respect from intelligence professionals as she did scorn from fellow Californian and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for her bipartisan approach to fixing and improving the CIA.
A CIA nomination would get her out of Pelosi's hair and out of the House Homeland Security Committee, where she's been languishing since the speaker passed her over as House Intelligence Committee chair in favor of former border patrolman Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas.
It's often said that Harman is difficult to work with, to put it kindly, but the CIA may need someone with as finely tuned a BS meter as Harman's to fix its long ingrained problems."

Thanks flatus, I'm sitting tight for now, going cash heavy - I figure the dollar isn't going to crash much further - if things start to turn I'll dive in. I hear those ads for gold and always laugh at ads telling me what a great deal gold is becaus eit's lower than its historic high when inflation adjusted - sounds to me like that says it's lost value, which it has over the past year (about 25%), and gained over the past 5 (about double). And of course oil has been a frickin' ping pong ball.

True: You're right. It's very sad since the US is the Titanic and there are not enough life boats.
I don't think everyone grasps the seriousness of the situation we are in. God knows Limbaugh, Hannity, Fox News etc. fail to understand that partisan politics need to take a bit of a back seat right now. It's not about losing and winning at this point.
I hope that Obama's message of change will cause everyone (on both sides of the aisle) to understand that business as usual isn't going to get us where we need to go. I know it sounds trite, but we really do need to work together on the enormous problems facing our country and the world.
Our political leaders need to stop acting like middle school students and get to work. Actually, I shouldn't insult middle school kids. In a lot of ways they are better behaved.

Lieberman paid his money and he took his chances. He rolled the dice and came up craps. The idea that the most visible senate supporter for McCain's presidential campaign, who opposed both the Dem postion generally and Obama's position specifically on Iraq would remain as head of the Homeland Security Committee is beyond credibility. He made his own bed - now he gets to lie in it. he's threatened Reid with caucusing with the Reps if he doesn't retain his chairmanship? So what? His votes as chair have been in opposition to the policies Obama ran on and the dems have advocated. If he stays, he controls the flow in a committee critical to a major policy emphasis of the party in power - even Reid isn't that stupid (I hope)

From that blog: (patd@2:01)
"The current occupant of the top spy's seat, meanwhile, remains outwardly calm, urging CIA employees not speculate about the future and keep their noses to the grindstones.
"Mike Hayden is not worried about it," said an intelligence official who asked not to be named. "He is focused on doing the job."
But he wouldn't mind being asked to the dance, the official said.
"If he is asked to stay on at CIA, that's something he would consider at that time. He likes the work, he has a high regard for the people there, and he cares deeply about the mission. Those are the factors that he would consider.""
Last time I checked, he was a serving officer. He'll do his duty no matter what administration owns the WH.

Gordo, bs."Every reason..."? Give me a break. What family members and what proof do they offer? Any evidence of an adoption in Indonesia? They maintain records there - adoption records are generally public -in fact if their rules are anything like ours, they not only are required to be published before and after (and they do have newspapers there), but require the consent of the natural father. Any evidence of that? Besides, the Indonesian dual citizenship issue has been analyzed and discounted. Again, the burden to prove Obama isn't a nbc of the US is yours. You raise mere possibilities rather than proof. Sorry, that gets you nowhere.

XR, Gordo was blowing smoke then as he is now - since when have 527s given a rat's ass about the candidate's wishes, or at least done so publicly? If that tape existed, it would have been used - particulary in the last week when the polls started going south. McCain could have claimed he didn't authorize it, repudiated the org that released it, and had the best of both worlds. Gordo was speculating then, like he's doing now. Of course, you understand, applying the rules Gordo applies, the fact that the tape was never played is irrlevant (and if anything makes the claim more likely to be true rather than likely to be false) - there are people who say it exists, so it is up to Michelle Obama to disprove that the tape exists and to explain its absence. The lack of proof of the thing is proo of the thing. See how this works?

I've known this game for 40 years. In the old days it was called, "Do You Still Beat Your Wife." It is impossible to put forward evidence for things that never existed and never will, which is why GORDO continually ducks my question, "Where's the beef ?" It is just too devastating for his game to admit that there is nothing to his fraud beyond conjectures based on hearsay, quoting more hearsay, quoting foreign language hearsay, allegedly confided by a senile woman who is now dead.

Craig, you make a great point. President Carter could have done many great things if he had not alienated so many of the D.C. power elite.
I admire President Carter and President Clinton. Both were victims of inexperience on the federal level. Clinton recovered, Carter did not. It makes perfect sense that President-elect Barack Obama would take steps to avoid these pitfalls. I think it helps that he is a U.S. Senator in that he knows the culture better than the last two Democratic Presidents and has already built many alliances within the D.C. power elites.

Ping: I find it so interesting that Republicans always stress that there have been NO more attacks on US soil since 9/11 while conveniently forgetting that the worst attack against us ever occurred under Bush's watch.
And should you propose that 9/11 is Clinton's fault there is that nagging "historical" document from August 2001 that suggests otherwise.
Let's also not forget that the main culprit in the '93 WTC attack is behind bars while OBL remains at large.

Ping, "Let's hope that Barack keeps us as safe from Terror attacks as Bush. That is his Number One Job. PERIOD" Really? Nice try as a start to trying to remove the tarnish from Bush's "legacy". And an interesting perspective considering all the threats in the world. If your idea of being safe is being locked in a war without end and without a plan for victory or exit, what a curious idea of being safe. Well, I guess we have been safe from having our airliners blown up with 4.25 ounce sticks of deodorant and tubes of toothpaste. Now THAT'S safe.

And shame on Bush for ignoring the 6 august 2001 warning about an eminent attack on the USA by Islamic terrorists. Yessiree, babybush did a terrific job protecting us against the 9/11 attack. He immediately picked up the Rudman-Hart Commission's recommendation to harden all aircraft cockpits against terrorist attacks. 8 months later, the Twin Towers still stood, despite the al qaeda terrorist plan to crash planes into them. The thanks goes to babybush's decision that the cost of hardening cockpits was well worth a few million dollars.
Also, the people of New Orleans are deeply grateful for bush's quickly acting on recommendations to beef up the levee and strengthen the seawall. As a result, New Orleans suffered only minor damage from Hurricane Katrina.
As my grandad would have said in a Fargo accent , "Ya, dat bush fella, he's sure been a pip."

GORDO:
Your point about Obama's whereabouts at birth is tiresome and moot even if we grant you all your assumptions. Unless you want to argue that his mother was not a U.S. citizen, that is.
From the Naturalization Act passed by Congress in 1790: "And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond the sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens."
Give it a rest. Meanwhile, here's a quick and dirty list from Wikipedia of other U.S. Presidential candidates born overseas:
--Barry Goldwater (1964): Born in Arizona while it was still a territory.
--George Romney (1968): Born in Mexico to U.S. parents
--Lowell Weicker (1980): Born in Paris to a U.S. citizen father and a mother who was the Indian born daughter of a British general.
--John McCain (200, 2008): Born in Panama Canal Zone on a U.S. military installation.
I could also point out that none of the nine presidents who preceded John Tyler (president 1841-1845) was born a U.S. citizen. Neither was president number 12, Zachary Taylor. All 10 of those presidents were born before the United States came into existence in 1787.
So given all this, not to mention the 99.99999999 percent certitude that Obama was in fact born in Hawaii just a couple of years after it became a state, what is your point again?

Champ, If he had stuck with an endorsement, that probably would have been okay. Even a speech at the convention was probably forgiveable given their long friendship and shared attitudes about the war. What really bent the noses out of shape was his campaigning down ticket for Republicans against Democratic contenders.
Holy Joe has ever right to his principles and positions but when he acts as a total traitor to his supposed party, he couldn't expect some downgrading by senior party officials. It would be a little like giving someone a bonus that you caught stealing cash from the register.

ET,
Not sure where you see racist? It is factual -
The various parties have specific demographic ID's – but it is the behavior that is in focus and the observed behavior of certain individuals has a common history but does not apply to all.
Think of is as a sociological analysis - There is no emotion of hate involved.
Not sure how this is racist?

Actually, since the 1969 Monty Python skit, everyone has suspected the Spanish Inquisition.
While we were lulled into endlessly waiting for the Spanish Inquisition to attack, the babybush Inquisition was organized. The bush Inquisition soon crept into the White House (hence the term creepuplican). Today, heretics are no longer burnt at the stake, they are drowned at the board. The cream of the jest is that creepuplicans don't even recognize the Inquisition when they see their party pals running one.
As Graham Chapman would say, "Dam'd clever, these Inquisitors, what ?"

Speaking of news gaffes, I chuckled when an MSNBC anchor reported this the other day.
"This just in: 12 people are feared dead in the latest U.S. missile strike along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border."
Feared dead?
Isn't the point of a missile strike to kill people -- hopefully bad guys?
(Mind you, the report included no information at that juncture on who had been hit -- suspected terrorists, Taliban or innocent villagers. But it jumped to the breathless, data-free conclusion that it was misguided fire)

Lieberman knows that no republican has won a war since Wm McKinley in 1898. McKinley didn't resort to torture, and didn't take our toothpaste tubes as and tweezers away before we could board trains or steamers. He didn't put Quakers and Episcopalian preachers on the suspect list, yet he still won that war.
Since then, every republican president has been a loser. Joe knows all this and acted like a statesman instead of like a sideshow barker and neocon-game shill.
Let Lieberman have 4 years naked in abu Ghraib, with the dogs and the whip girl for company, to see if he changes is mind about babybush's glorious war.

Thoughts & Observations:
Palin: She isn't as dumb as the Repub's make her out to be. The ingrained, middle aged, white men of the Repub party are AFRAID of her and hence, they're saying what we're hearing. They don't want her in their club so they're starting early black balling her.
Michael Savage: A jerk, but a jerk who's saying that Hannity, Gengrich, Rush, and the like are OUT as far as the Repub's are concerned.
Sean "the chipmunk" Hannity: He's already negatively dissecting Obama's 1st press conference.
They're all complaining about Joe Lieberman. He's a turn coat. It was his choice. That's what happens.
They're whining like little girls. And, yes, that's precisely what I've chosen to say.

uh, yeah THIS IS SERIOUS, SHEESH!
SUN-TIMES REPORT: "Traffic tip for the days ahead: If you see a motorcade with police cars, black SUVs and guys with sunglasses talking into their cuffs, don't try to cut it off.
One couple tried to drive their tan sedan around Barack Obama's motorcade downtown Thursday morning and found themselves looking at the barrels of Secret Service firepower.
"The [Secret Service] SUV cut the car off immediately, and the security team aimed their weapons at the car," a reporter in the motorcade wrote in a pool report. "The driver and passenger in the sedan stopped and looked stunned -- until the male driver appeared to understand what was happening (your pool reporter could see him mouth 'Obama')."
The president-elect was on his way to a security briefing at FBI headquarters in the Loop, when the motorcade left Lake Shore Drive and the sedan tried to drive around it on Van Buren, according to the pool reporter, P.J. Huffstutter, the Los Angeles Times' Midwest Bureau chief.
"Some of the drivers here in Chicago do not seem to understand that a) The Chicago police car at the end of the president-elect's motorcade is serious about having traffic pull over when the officers flash their lights and hit their sirens, and b) It's not a great idea to jump ahead of traffic by trying to cut around the black SUV filled with five heavily-armed Secret Service CAT members," Huffstutter wrote.

US Auto manufacturers: I have NO sympathy for them. I remember very well the early 1970's when there was an energy crisis and the need, then, for smaller more efficient cars. It's their fault, and the government shouldn't bail them out too. That'd be more socialization just like Bush did with the banks and wall street.

Here's the Amendment from the sample ballot.
NO.2
Constitutional Amendment
Article l, New Section
Florida Marriage Protection Amendment
This amendment protects marriage as the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife and provides that no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized.
The direct financial impact this amendment will have on state and local government revenues and expenditures cannot be determined, but is expected to be minor.
That is the Amendment that passed on Tuesday, election day.
The Republican Party of the Religious Right or the American Taliban is no different than the Middle East Taliban that shoves its Religious Doctrine down the throats of its citizens.
Is a American Theocracy that far down the road? Only time will tell.

By the way, I agree that the auto companies are at fault. Other industries can forecast need, but they kept pushing the SUVs because they are so profitable and killed their electric projects until recently. I remember when GM re-invented the Oldsmobile as Saturn and supposedly put in all these W. Edwards Demming quality control techiques. But it doesn't matter how well you drive the car if you go to the wrong destination.
Like the bank bailout -- or, maybe, moreso -- the auto bailout might be a necessary evil. I am a small businessman and I absolutely make the very real connection between lots of people suddenly without jobs and their sudden inability to buy things. It reverberates not only in the community, but especially with the importance of ecommerce, everywhere.

The English-speaking world perhaps knows them best through the popular 1980s animated television series from Hanna-Barbera Productions, The Smurfs.[1]"

Is all the back and forth about obamas smile a sign of dementia--no---ok here is a test for all the trail mixer---a little friday night fun
Craig tell us all how u did
I know you'll all pass with flying colors.. And I'm certain you will all try it.
Test for Dementia
Below are four (4) questions and a bonus question. You have to answer them instantly. You can't take your time, answer all of them immediately. OK?
Let's find out just how clever you really are....
First Question:
You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are yo
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!
Try not to screw up next time. Now answer the second question, but don't take as much time as you took for the first question, OK
Second Question:
If you overtake the last person, then you are...? (scroll down)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST person?
You're not very good at this, are you?
Third Question:
Very tricky arithmetic! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.. Now add another 1000 . Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000.. Now add 10. What is the total?
Scroll down for answer...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you get 5000?
The correct answer is actually 4100
If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator! Today is definitely not your day, is it? Maybe you'll get the last question right... Maybe.
Fourth Question:
Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you Answer Nunu? NO! Of course it isn't.
Her name is Mary. Read the question again!
Okay, now the bonus round:
mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done.
Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He just has to open his mouth and ask...
It's really very simple.
PASS TH IS ON TO FRUSTRATE THE
SMART PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE!
And in the same year, 1958, Expo '58, the World's Fair, was held in Brussel.
In this video you can see the Atomium which has just been renovated and renewed. It's a sight to see, but I have never entered it yet.
Enjoy this walk down memory lane... even if it's for the very first time.
Here is another great site:
http://users.skynet.be/rentfarm/expo58/
There is a great Belgian chocolate made by Cote D'or called "Dessert '58" . I also sell this in my shop assortment. What is astonishing is that most people don't know why "Dessert 58" is named as such. It was their special candy bar for the world's fair. I talked to a representative of Cote D'or recently and chided his company a bit for not doing special packaging for the bar, retro, dating back to 1958. It would have sold a LOT more.
hmmm, now how do I tie this in to politics? Does the fact that an American Multinational - KRAFT - now owns Belgium's Cote D'or company?
Craig - I've been thinking for several days that Obama is furious, not worried, at the stuff he's been hearing at these briefings. He might just be anxious to find out the worst of the idiocy of W's White House administration.
It' scary to think of some of the stuff they might have done without telling us.
Hey Chloe
I think your so nice! I wish I could find some good in Matthews,NO! I watched him for years,even during Impeachment.Tweety was so cruel to President Clinton but I still watched him because he had many great guests and topics.I quit him totally the morning he was on Morning Joe and said Hillary was only a Senator because people felt sorry for her because her husband cheated on her!! Terrible!! I suppose he does have a nice side,but I'm not ever going to give him a second chance, because I'm through with MSNBC....Don't miss it,I have TM....
Tony, That's about the time I stopped watching too, and I don't plan to ever watch him again either.
Now that you got me thinking about him, I get mad all over again. I wasn't defending him Tony, there were just times I appreciated his personality and the way he seemed to think out loud, without censoring himself. You never knew what he'd say. But the negatives far outweigh the positives. You're right.
Anon-Paranoid, my parents were both receiving social security checks when my Dad died. My Mom earned more money when she was working than my Dad did. However, he received more money from Social Security because he had to take a medical retirement. I think my Mom gets slightly more in her social security check now, because she's the only income in the household.
She had to draw on his SS#, because it was a good $500 more on the month .. even though Dad had been dead for over 20 year, Mom had worked longer & made more than Dad ever did in his lifetime ... If you think there is not a causal effect of Bush's international polices in regard to terrorism, you are blind. I said it sounded "racist" because you were referring to the "guests" in Europe as destroying the continent's culture. The only culture that would be at risk would have to be non-Western. Since most immigrants are of North African and Middle Eastern descent, your charge strikes me as "racist" or perhaps "cultural-ist"?
I lived in Europe before Bush was President too, and you can clearly see the effect of that bully's actions in the hardening of anti-American and anti-Western attitudes.
Obama Calls Nancy Reagan To Apologize For Joke
Campaign '08 Complete Coverage
CHICAGO (AP) ― President-elect Obama has called Nancy Reagan to apologize for joking that she held seances in the White House.
"At a news conference Friday, Obama said he had spoken with all the living presidents. Then he smiled and said he didn't want to get into a "Nancy Reagan thing" about doing seances.
The former first lady had consulted with astrologers during her husband's presidency. But she did not hold conversations with the dead.
Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said the president-elect called Mrs. Reagan to apologize for the remark the spokeswoman characterized as "careless and offhanded."
yeah he's a sport for calling her
So you believe that astrology is a good public policy making tool ? Cause Nancy did.
"Nancy stated in her memoirs, "I felt panicky every time [Ronald] left the White House" following the assassination attempt, and made it her concern to know her husband's schedule: the events he would be attending, and with whom. Eventually, this protectiveness led to her consulting an astrologer, Joan Quigley, who offered insight on which days were "good", "neutral", or should be avoided, which influenced her husband's White House schedule.Days were color-coded according to the astrologer's advice to discern precisely which days and times would be optimal for the president's safety and success."
Posted by: sock drawer open | November 8, 2008 3:58 AM
I do feel a bit used by the Obama campaign though re: Gay marriage initiative. He should have been more direct and definitive about it:
"One complicating factor was that both sides in the campaign had plausible reason to claim Obama's support. The president-elect strongly stated his opposition to the proposition, calling it "divisive and discriminatory."
But he has also said in public speeches that he opposes same-sex marriage. In the days leading up to the election, some Democrats received "robo-calls" on their cellphones containing an excerpt from such a speech.
"Here is Barack Obama in his own words on the definition of marriage," the call began.
Then the voice of Obama speaking to a crowd comes on: "I believe marriage is a union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God is in the mix."
A narrator then urged a yes vote on Proposition 8.
California Democratic Party consultant Roger Salazar was among the recipients of the call.
"They saw the Obama tide coming and they were trying to capitalize on it," Salazar said, adding that the call was "manipulative and deceitful," given the candidate's stated opposition to the amendment."
In his 1996 book, "The Choice," Washington Post editor and writer Bob Woodward said that as first lady, Sen. Hillary Clinton had seance-like sessions at the White House during which she conversed with late first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. At the time, the White House said the sessions were not seances.
Hillary just talked about feeling that Eleanor's presence was very strong (to her) in the White House. I don't know if she actally used the word "channeling" but if she did I suspect it was in a pop culture way. I can imagine that many "presences" are very real in that house. It was blown out of proportion.
