My understanding is that President-Elect Barack Obama already gets it, but to effectively govern he needs to quickly move rightward in ways that will require many of his liberal supporters to be patient. In the next few days expect Obama to reach out to John McCain supporters with specific and unequivocal moves that signal his intention to govern from the center.
"I will be your president too," Obama to McCain voters (Chicago victory speech, 11/5)
The Obama camp is planning such a move, I'm told, and prepared to make their core supporters a bit grumpy in so doing. But Obama knows that now is the time - while his liberal fans revel in the euphoria of his election and are inclined to cut him some slack.
Obama has carefully studied how Bill Clinton got off track by moving left early in his presidency. That's a big reason why Democrats suffered massive losses in Congress in the first midterm election after Clinton's 1992 victory.
Look for Obama to quickly take steps this week to demonstrate that he has no plans to open the liberal flood gates.

McCain was gracious.

My e-mail -
I'm about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first.
We just made history.
And I don't want you to forget how we did it.
You made history every single day during this campaign -- every day you knocked on doors, made a donation, or talked to your family, friends, and neighbors about why you believe it's time for change.
I want to thank all of you who gave your time, talent, and passion to this campaign.
We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I'll be in touch soon about what comes next.
But I want to be very clear about one thing...
All of this happened because of you.
Thank you,
Barack

I am grateful for those of you who supported Obama and his ideals -Personally, on this blog , I have been demeaned and ridiculed on levels that are not acceptable in a civil society ( but really who cares).....when I look at Obama I know his challenges have been ten-fold as difficult , yet he has won. He has beat the bigotry and social ignorance on many levels.

I watched all day long, with a few breaks. My bother and his wife were there just 30 yards from Obama as he spoke...I saw my sister-in-law in the crowd. It was so loud the half hour before Obama spoke my brother could no longer hear me on the cell phone. It was quite a day, quite a night...and will be a brighter day.
I lived as a teen in the 1960's and the troubles in the South deeply troubled me then. Congressman John Lewis spoke twice on msnbc last evening...very moving just to hear him speak.
At times I thought I was dreaming or maybe I had gone stark raving mad...this was really happening? It happened.
Now, Bush? Get the fuck out of Obama's house !!!

sorry but phuck this guy.. I hate this prick who stole the nomination.. yes, STOLE it from Hillary..
neither of them reached the electoral vote count needed to win the nomination
he in the end only had 4 more than her.. 4!
and she won the majority vote
so who should have been the candidate?
who used illegal.. yes, ILLEGAL tactics in caucuses and primaries that the obambi loving media turned a blind eye to?
and of course if anyone didn't bow to the new messiah he and his corrupt media friends cried racism.. pathetic.. they played the race card and are still playing it--- nauseating
I hate this guy as much as I hate Bush.. you fools will see soon enough.. he is just a power hungry politician and you'll all be disappointed in the end.
remember how he voted on the illegal wire tapping?
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS..
obambi bots are sad brainwashed fools who fell for the "hope" and "change" shit that had NO substance
makes me sick and embarrassed to be an american..
first bush and now this scumbag and that bitch he's married to.
are you going to sleep well at night knowing david axelrod is walking the halls of the white house with so much power? if you can, then you are all insane, absoluely insane.. you have no idea what you are in for.. no idea
this is a sad day for this country, our constitution and bill of rights are in the shitter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have always known Obama was no Liberal any way...he was at polar opposites with Kucinich in the debates, he is a hardliner on Iran, has only vague plans to withdraw some troops from Iraq, and is a hardcore supporter of Zionism, the unwavering kind of support that likely will approve of Israeli aggression against Syria and ultimately Iran.
msnbc's Matthews & Gregory said he'll infuse new blood into D.C.---but really? He's already committed to Dick Lugar of Indiana as an advisor...how old can you get? Lugar is tired old blood.
We don't know what the hell is gonna happen, but I am pleased as punch to have Obama beat the deposed one.
..wasn't nobody home...don't have to tell this on myself...but when John Lewis spoke on TV I recalled all the goddam racism I lived with when I travelled the U.S. South in 1968 and 1969 on a bus with a baseball team that was over 3/4 Af. Americans. I saw a redneck actually pull a shotgun from a rack in a store, AIM it at my teammates and order them back to the bus!! All we needed were Moon Pies and Coca-Colas. Shit like that...making the Blacks sleep in an old chicken coop once as we whities got hotel rooms...I was 18 and I protested the deal but the Af. Ams. told me to just shut up and learn a lesson....well...I remember those nights and they all came flooding back...and tears streamed down my face like ...like....hell, I don't know...tears of bitterness, tears of joy...I kind of thought I was in a Jacob's Ladder (movie) scene for a second...was this real? Is this reality? Did this happen?
When my kids and I got to our polling place at 4:45 am to prepare our precinct, there were already about 100 people in line. My eldest and I were name-checkers while my youngest stayed outside with the other volunteers to help the people in line, who were growing in number as the dawn broke. Nearly every person who came in was on my targeted list. Whole families came to vote together, adult children and their parents. Lots of first-time voters. One lady as 89 years old, voting for the first time. She stood in line for two hours. At 9:30 I took my targeted list and drove it to the HQ, (the second on in my red country). I had to drive it in because the phone lines to the voter tracking service were jammed apparently in one last desperate move by the GOP to hamper our GOTV work. The HQ was a beehive of activity. Phone banks full, canvassers coming in to get turf and leaving with assignments, data entry workers setting up a room of laptops and logging on, people dropping off food, drivers getting assignments to pick up voters to take to the polls, a crew of AKA sisters dressed in pink and green -- who'd been canvassing all morning and were taking a break before their next assignments. I was asked to drive to all the other precincts to pick up the other targeted voter lists because of the phone jamming. Some of the precincts thwarted the GOP jamming efforts with blackberries that allowed them to go online and enter the data. I picked up the others and drove them into the data entry team. A few problems -- GOP voter intimidation and poll worker harrassment. One poll worker was assaulted by an angry GOP when she innocently offered him a DEM sample ballot. I got there shortly after it happened -- the sheriff had been called but the guy left as soon as he realized the cops were coming. I followed him to another polling place and let the cops know they could find there and they did. He was hanging out at the GOP table when they pulled up. He tried to deny he was at the other polling place -- but they had his description and I verified that I followed him over.
Lawyers who were volunteering their time for Protect the Vote were helpful throughout the day. We have a lawyer at every precinct -- sometimes more than one lawyer. Most were from DC (LOL) but others had traveled from NJ and NY to VA because it we were a battleground state. Lots of other help from out-of-state too -- people from Maryland and DC, NJ and NY came to be boots on the ground. So strange for me since my family and I usually picked battleground states to travel to and volunteer and now it was our turn for the help.
Huge turnout at most of the polling places. When all was said and done in my precinct, only 100 people out of 3800 did not vote. The GOP regulars I had seen over the years in all the other elections had stunned looks as they stood in line and saw all the people that had never voted before.
When the polls closed, I stayed behind to observe the results counting and finally made it home around 9:00 pm. I tapped in my earlier entry, took a sip of wine, then conked out until after 2:00 am and woke up to President Obama, Senator Warner and three new DEM Congressionals for VA. It's a new, BLUE, day in the Old Dominion.
Did exit polls really show that voters were in a bad mood? I don't get that. I smiled the whole time and would have been skipping if I could still do that. I saved my little "I voted" sticker and put it on the stubs we get - it has the date on it and should bring back some memories one day. I just stood and looked at my ballot for a minute or two - I really did vote for a black man for president. Another giant step....
John McCain's speech was spectacular - how did he do it? He wasn't obviously reading. I liked his speech better than Obama's.
So far it seems that that universal poster boy for marital
bliss, Scott Peterson, may safely marry again with the sure and certain knowledge that his marriage will be blessed if he marries a woman. His first marriage to a woman was blessed, of course, because it was to a woman, until he butchered her and their unborn child and put the bodies in a plastic bag and threw them into the bay.
But, hey, them's the rules made millenia ago by old men who spent too much time out in the desert all by themselves!
Joe seems to think that the last 8 years have been a success for our country. More of that same attitude that being a "C" student has the same value as Magna Cume Laude, that superstition, and reason have a place at the same table, and that Hank Williams Jr. is equal to Bruce Springstein.
Sad but true.Amendment 2 passed here in Florida.I had hopes,but in reality many are not ready to extend the same rights they enjoy to gay people.I live in the real world! I was at Walmart yesterday and overheard a young Walmart worker telling a fellow employee"You don't understand what I'm saying because I don't talk Gay" all the while throwing up a limp wrist and laughing!I just gave him a discussed shake of my head and I went on about my business.I shopped all the while thinking man those two were people of color,how can they not get it!! Congrats to all of the Obamaniacs here. Here's hoping that he will be as good a prez as I think Hil'ry would've been. He gave a fantastic speech and, although I don't recall the phrase right now, it was, in the spirit of the $10,000 Pyramid, something a Republican would say...so Craig, he's already on the move. The far-left didn't handle his moves to the middle very well earlier, so expect some disappointed folks on the left and relieved folks in the center. The folks on the far-right are probably fastening their chinstraps.
I think Prez Obama's radio addresses will actually draw listeners. He should give a weekly pep rally, because, although it was way beyond my bedtime due to the time change, I actually felt hopeful and for some reason, more American.
The power in my neighborhood actually went out for about a minute during McCain's concession speech.
corey - Hope that is what you wanted for your birthday. No refunds, no exchanges for 4 years.
I agree with your feelings about pot laws, but Obama won't do it. Better to let them get weakened and ignored one state at a time. If he does he'll make the same blunder Clinton made with "Don't ask Don't Tell". He can't go walking around poking at all the hornets nests that are our politics, he'll have plenty flying around his head as it is.
The Feds are the problem. In California we said by initiative we wanted pot treated differently but the Feds refuse to accomodate. The federal govt spend over 7 billion dollars a year on pot laws. The people most likely to be arrested are not old white women living in the suburbs.
This is just the kind of issue he should take on ..especially when there is support for it. Clinton's problem was trusting a maroon like Sam Nunn.
From his accceptance speech, words to guide us all.
Chloe, we made it back at about 2:15. It was _much_ better then. I think that many people were simply unable to get their votes recorded because of the extended waiting.
I hope that Mr Obama has a wonderfully successful and productive presidency.
And, in the next couple of years, I hope that the citizens who claim the Democratic Party as their own exert the perquisites of their ownership and force the DNC to follow its rules in the nominating process for future elections; in a representative democracy, process is what makes the workings of government credible and worthy of public support.
Whisker's difference in Minn. Senate race
Associated Press - November 5, 2008 7:34 AM ET
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The finish line isn't in sight yet for Minnesota's long Senate campaign.
Republican incumbent Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken appear to be headed for an automatic recount. The vote count is nearly complete, and Coleman holds a tiny 900-vote edge of nearly 2.9 million votes cast.
That's well within the threshold to trigger an automatic recount.
One bad thing about the high voter turnout due to the youth vote: Fewer dry towns in Texas. Every town that has become wet has had an increase in crime & domestic violence...they may get more revenue from the sale of alcohol, but it puts a strain on the police not to mention the human toll for victims. Not happy about this one.
Carrying a majority of the popular vote, Obama did especially well among women and young voters, who polls showed were particularly sensitive to the current climate of everything being fucked. Another factor contributing to Obama's victory, political experts said, may have been the growing number of Americans who, faced with the complete collapse of their country, were at last able to abandon their preconceptions and cast their vote for a progressive African-American.
Citizens with eyes, ears, and the ability to wake up and realize what truly matters in the end are also believed to have played a crucial role in Tuesday's election.
We all harbor some forms of prejudices and/or hatreds which extend far beyond those of sex and race.
Although we would like to believe America could abolish such practices, such an accomplishment would be a first in
recorded human history. It is an unlikely goal, as each one of us first has to admit and accept we have such failings.
But it is worth pursuing even if you fail trying.
I am sure you are aware that babybush is scared crapless of horses. That particular 'cowboy' rides the trail on a golf cart.
I have no doubt that babybush is a born-again. I also believe that he suffers from delusions. I believe that his stories of Jesus coming to him in the middle of the night to issue orders indicate a disordered mind. This is the only reasonable explanation for the Mad-Hatter-on-a-rampage quality of governance over the last 7 5/6 years that I can come up with.
PETA's attack brings sad end to Mepkin Abbey's egg enterprise
Saturday, December 22, 2007
The monks at Mepkin Abbey have supported their contemplative lives for 40 years largely by supplying eggs to local grocery stores. No more. The abbey has succumbed to a campaign undertaken last year by the animal-rights activist group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Too bad.
In announcing its decision to phase out its operation over the next year and a half, a Mepkin spokesman said PETA's campaign had become a distraction to the Trappist community: "While the monks are sad to give up work that has sustained them for many years, a hard and honorable work of which they are proud, the pressure from PETA has made it difficult for them to live their quiet life of prayer, work and sacred reading."
Clearly, that's what PETA had in mind when it started its high-profile campaign last year. Ironically, Mepkin Abbey has been a major benefactor for environmental preservation in Berkeley County.
Among PETA's stated ideals is the contention that animals are "not ours to use for food, clothing, experimentation or entertainment." Based on that position, PETA would likely view any egg-laying operation as animal exploitation and fair game. But throughout the campaign against Mepkin, the local response has been and continues to be almost fully in support of the monks and their work, and opposed to PETA's methods and conclusions.
Anon, you'll have to tell me what the link is to - I can't open youtube at work, although I gather it is about Antietam.
One interesting facet of this election - if you go back to 1992 and look at the electoral college results, the only states that Obama won that have not voted Dem at least once in that period are: Virginia (with a possiblility of Indiana. While I am thrilled the Dem candidate won, I don't see the transformational election that was forecast. But if you look beyond the electoral map and to the demos of the votes, perhaps so. Along age lines, McCain won only among seniors (65 & older) - by 8%. Obama won on his margins in the 18-44 y.o. demo groups. I can't take the time to research it, but I'm guessing that is a first.
KGC -- We had chickens when I was a kid -- and while they can be vile animals, I grew quite fond of them. So for me, it would have been a vote to protect animals that I considered pets of a sort.
We were talking yesterday about a certain sexist term that I'd been unaware of...and that, coupled with "chicken talk" reminds me of a family saying:
"You're awfully close to peeing on a chicken."
Story: When my grandmother was a child, one of her brothers thought it was funny to stick his weiner through a hole in the wooden fence around the chicken yard. He then peed in the direction of the chicks. One day one of those hens damn near pecked his dick off. Hence, be careful of peeing on the chickens.
My Bright Side, this Election is finally over, and I hope to the dear lord, the two political partys never put the country through 2 years of campaigning again. I am Marking my words and Girding my Loins. I lived through the Carter Administration, I will survive an Obama Administration. When the "Enchanted's Spell wears off" and they figure out what they did, I suspect they will feel a lot like I do today...when I was able to vote for the first time, I voted for Jimmy Carter, why -Watergate, I had a knee jerk reaction. Today I realize how un wise that vote was....CRA started in the Carter Administration, got bumped up in the Clinton Administration and the last Bush Administration suffered the Economic fall out. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
Unlike many, this Presidential Election wasn't about Race for me...it was about an extreme Liberal agenda. That is getting ready to kick off in January. My husband just told me, he is hoping now that he is elected, he will tell the far left, I am going to Govern as a centerist...somehow I don't see that happening, Obama is beholden to who got him elected - Chicago.
--cs lewis
Im not up on the animal treatment deal......I dont understand it except that the sheer volume of food required to put out to 80 quadrillion grocery stores around the country would necessarily entail a good bit of discomfort and mal-treatment of the animals involved........I leave it to those who are concerned about animal treatment to dig into it and do the right thing, righting any wrongs they are able to right.......
whatever denies the rights of gays to marry is primitive, and sickening........and again, just as I escaped being a racist by reading the words of the declaration of independence and finding that they made sense to me and applying them to my life and dealings with the humans I have to deal with....(all men are created equal).....I reach the same conclusion about gays marrying......also as a young man I wound up playing music in some really dive bar situations the denizens of which represented all manners and degrees of sexuality and so figured all that out early on.....that's my personal view: all men and women are created equal.
Chickens? god bless 'em, I hope they get as good a treatment as caring people are able to procure for them. I still remember that book way back about the meat-packing industry which resulted in reforms, and things like the army meat procurers in the civil war getting rich by selling tainted meat to the army etc.....the mind wanders......
Patsi,
I owned cattle once upon a time, but it never made a cowboy out of me. Clearly, the guy had to live somewhere, and the marketing department thought that a ranch would be useful. Having a ranch worked well for Cactus Jack, LBJ, Ronald Reagan, Tony Alamo, David Koresh, and Charles Manson.
I think the word 'weasley' sizes up the rest of the crime family quite well. It reminds me of the the ifestation at Toad Hall. However, I would select 'squirrelly' for little george, because weasels are fearless creatures, whereas the squirt in the White House is afraid of every shadow and noise. I have too much respect for loons to use 'loony' when characterizing babybush's behavior.
Blonde wino,
Not so quick there. Bush maybe on the way out, but he isn't out just yet, and he can pretty much do as he wishes even as a lame duck president. He could call for other attacks in Syria, or do a preemptive strike in Iran. I said he could without Congress's approval, but I doubt if he would. But then again we are taking about Bush, and with his approval rating so far down he has very little to lose.
But a new politics of the common good can’t be only about government and markets. “It must also be about a new patriotism — about what it means to be a citizen,” said Sandel. “This is the deepest chord Obama’s campaign evoked. The biggest applause line in his stump speech was the one that said every American will have a chance to go to college provided he or she performs a period of national service — in the military, in the Peace Corps or in the community. Obama’s campaign tapped a dormant civic idealism, a hunger among Americans to serve a cause greater than themselves, a yearning to be citizens again.”
The day after: Obama was not my choice six months ago; but he won me over. I've read, listened to and absorbed political nonsense and even some dignfied commentaries and I've concluded Barack Obama should be the next President of the United States. I've voted and this time it feels so good to have voted for the winner. It feels good to be an American today and America has just voted the first black man to be the leader of our country and indeed the world. The World looks on and smiles.
Was anyone watching Fox this morning when they were reporting about the crowd that gathered outside of the White House last night?
They were saying that the crowd was chanting things like "YES WE CAN" and"OBAMA". All this while they were showing a close up of the crowd which was actually yelling "Go home Bush, Go home Bush", and some were making gestures toward the camera!! They aren't even being careful to hide the bias these days.
The election selection of Obama really drives home the point for term limits. If we are able to elect a prez with relatively little experience, in hope of changing the world, it may bring the idea of term limits to the light. Do we really need lifelong politicians to run our country? Do the McCains, Kennedys, Bidens, Clintons, etc., really help the American people or their own careers? Experience or demeanor? Is policy more important than people?
If what some say that Obama would not have won if it wasn't for the financial melt down-----then i say $ well spent, since it was spread around, and that it also include the very rich( since it effected them also) that could not see a loop hole in this one. Regardless of what obama does,,,his nomination opens up the way for others to follow, if the Dems can get us back to a position close to where we were before bush,,,,then this period of financial woes is worth it--no??
For now less $ to go around,less in our 401ks etc, etc, money well spent for the future of all?? like always time will tell----now that the elections are over its time to work.
CQ says ......
Stevens’ stunning showing at the polls has lent a sense of urgency to questions about whether his Senate colleagues will discipline him, perhaps as soon as the Nov. 17 lame-duck session.
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Ensign , R-Nev., said the Senate likely would hold a two-thirds vote on whether to expel Stevens before his appeal is resolved. “I don’t think it would wait until afterward,” Ensign said.
Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nev., said Saturday that Stevens would “face an ethics committee investigation and expulsion, regardless of his appeals process,” but Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated Stevens likely would be expelled only after his appeals are exhausted.
"The 2nd Congressional District, which includes Omaha, remains too close to call, with John McCain leading President-elect Barack Obama by 569 votes. And 9,000 provisional and early ballots are still uncounted, reports the Omaha World-Herald."
Another one for the chipper -
Louisiana’s Jefferson Poised to Win
Jefferson, who has denied wrongdoing, led Helena Moreno, a local television journalist, by 57 percent to 43 percent with all precincts reporting.
Despite his legal travails, Jefferson is highly likely to win re-election Dec. 6 against Republican lawyer Joseph Cao in a district that is a black-majority Democratic bastion. Jefferson’s trial is tentatively scheduled to begin Dec. 2, but that date will almost certainly slip.
Tuesday’s runoff election was needed because the first-round primary voting on Oct. 4 produced no clear winner, with Jefferson taking 25 percent of the vote and Moreno taking 20 percent in a seven-candidate race.
Louisiana’s primary elections originally were scheduled Sept. 6, with runoffs to follow Oct. 4, but the election schedule was postponed because of Hurricane Gustav.
The official outcome in North Carolina will depend the counting of provisional ballots, cast by voters whose eligibility to vote must be confirmed. That's a process that could take several days. It wasn't immediately known how many provisional ballots are outstanding.
With 100 percent of the nearly 3,000 precincts reporting, Obama led McCain by about 12,000 votes out of more than 4.2 million counted in unofficial results. Libertarian Bob Barr had less than 1 percent.
Do SoetorObama supporters truly believe that he is Constitutionally eligible for POTUS? Apparently, they have doubts and just don't care about the Constitution. You fear what would be revealed by the release of certified hardcopy BCs and other documents.
Documents are being withheld for a reason - his "hidden" past. Remember, a HI birth certificate does not prove HI was the birth place. HI will issue a BC to infants born in other states or even outside the US as long as the parents meet certain conditions. The BC lists the birth location. Kenya?.
I agree with Jason -- Hillary is needed in the Senate, not farmed out in the cabinet.
Newsweek -
-- The Obama campaign was provided with reports from the Secret Service showing a sharp and very disturbing increase in threats to Obama in September and early October, at the same time that the crowds at Palin rallies became more frenzied. Michelle Obama was shaken by the vituperative crowds and the hot rhetoric from the GOP candidates. "Why would they try to make people hate us?" Michelle Obama said to a top campaign aide.
chloe - When I wrote, "...not happy about this one," I was referring to the sale of wine & beer being allowed in my 'burb. Not sure why you think that was "inevitable"?
"Was anyone watching Fox this morning when they were reporting about the crowd that gathered outside of the White House last night?
They were saying that the crowd was chanting things like "YES WE CAN" and"OBAMA". All this while they were showing a close up of the crowd which was actually yelling "Go home Bush, Go home Bush", and some were making gestures toward the camera!! They aren't even being careful to hide the bias these days.
Reminds me of that mob that stood outside the naval observatory at midnight during the 2000 recount—yelling, "GET OUT OF CHENEY'S HOUSE"
Where's the change?
Tony, Don't forget! I adore you. Thanks.
Blue,
When we moved here from California fifteen years ao, I had never seen laws like that. In California they sold liquor in markets and every where else 24/7 since I was a kid. So when I got to Texas, it was all new to me. Since we've lived here, so many of the laws on alcohol sales have changed in so many counties, that I was assuming it'll end up happening everywhere. I understand you aren't happy about it, and I was not and am not promoting the idea in any way. Especially, considering the raising crime rate correlation that you mentioned (which I didn't know about).
I concluded (possibly in error) that things will keep changing in the direction I've seen them headed in other areas. I'm sorry if that offended you and sorry your county changed something you'd rather have stayed the same. :)
