Massive numbers of new and early voters suggest the emergence of a radically different electorate favoring the Democrats.
Overall, 13 battleground states have already received 3.4 million new registrations as of Oct. 14, compared to 1.8 million new registrations in 2004. More on CQ Politics.
To see how this could improve Barack Obama's chances, consider Gallup's alternative surveys for a traditional turnout versus the expanded turnout that appears to be developing. Turnout of likely voters who look like those who made it to the ballot box four years ago yields a five-point lead for Obama over Republican John McCain, according to Gallup.
But when Gallup models an expanded electorate comprised of more new voters and increased numbers of those who have not showed up in the past, Obama jumps to a nine-point lead. (Each model found 4 percent of those surveyed to be undecided.)
Dramatic increases in registration indicate that Gallup's broader model could be closer to the mark, pointing to an Obama landslide that might look more like a tsunami.

Oh harborwoman, you're good! Thank you.
I'm now 105 but holding at 104 until further notice.
Craig, I heard on the news, but it felt like serious hearsay, that in WV early voters saw their Obama votes being changed to McBush votes before their very eyes.
Sounds plausible but also fishy.

You know Craig,
I still have a weird feeling about the repugs. I don´t know why.... Something tells me that on election day or shortly before we might be surprised in a big way.....
call me the devil´s advocate.....But, the voter surge may also work contrarily....
I so don´t belive any poll which is out there, but the voter turnout may be spicy.
I just do not want people to think that BO is so in front that he will be automatically elected........
On the other hand.... Welll, let me keep that to myself.
But,
If BO wins big...... Two things will be certain
1. HRC was dead wrong, saying t her supporters in the primary that BO was less likely than her to win in November
2. Mitt Romney will be the partie´s clear frontrunner in 4 years, alas someone like BO comes along for that party (I so see Sarah P somewehere)

Obama leads McCain 50 percent to 42 percent among likely U.S. voters in the latest three-day tracking poll, up from a 6-point advantage for Obama on Monday. The telephone poll has a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.
"It was another very big day for Obama," said pollster John Zogby. "Things clearly are moving in Obama's direction."

So, Biden guarantees "It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. ... Remember I said it standing here if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy."
Sort of goes against the argument that electing Obama automatically makes the world like us again.

From the google search "early voting records"
More than 33,000 Dallas County voters had cast ballots by the time the polls closed at 5 p.m. Monday.
The previous record set on the first day of early voting came in 1996, when 21,960 votes were cast.
Ft. Worth -
A first-day record also was set in Tarrant County, where 28,273 votes were recorded by 6 p.m., a number that was expected to increase slightly. The previous record was 17,685 in the 2004 presidential election.
Steamboat Springs, Colo.-
Almost 400 Routt County residents cast their ballots Monday in what Clerk and Recorder Kay Weinland called the busiest first day of early voting in county history.
Fla -
Meanwhile a record number of voters all across Hillsborough County showed up to vote early.
More than double voted this time than in 2004. 7,648 people voted in Hillsborough County on Monday according to Hillsborough County's Supervisor of Elections, Buddy Johnson.
One man wearing a suit walked out of the courthouse after voting and yelled "Thank you Jesus! Thank ya'!"
Members of Florida A & M's marching 100 band marched straight to the polls too.
They entertained the crowds along the way.

Thanks tonyb
After listening to Obama live and being in the crowd it creates mixed feelings...
He is a very persuasive speaker
Two key ones.
1 Obama clearly plays to the fear and wants and makes corp. America evil – All Big Government and how he will do all of these things for them. (I guess I am not one of them)
2 Where the news outlets are getting the numbers of people – now they are raising to 60K at the event – No Way. Having been there – looked at the photo’s, this is just another continuation of the news media love affair or the city (now check the bias of the mayor and chief of police) to fluff up Obama. If over 20K I would be surprised.

Mineral and oil rights payments – a cost for raw materials which are owned by the people. That once oil drilling is started as is blocked by the Dem’s and Obama will have a supply and demand impact favorable to the US.

Higher taxes on PROFITS and success – that are very progressive – that will send global jobs away from the US.

Flatus - On the individual basis and some of the corp. parachute payouts to US based executives is absurd. they are big numbers for an individual but the maginal impact of these individual payouts is marginal at best - it is attitude
But overall – beyond some incentives – I have not seen the transfer of risk? Why are corporations going bankrupt?
Business is the back bone of our economy – all segments and size. This must be the focus to maintain these Fundamentals.
Big Government is not the answer – it is when Government gets involved to disrupt our Fundamentals that we have problems – hence what we are in today.

Chicago - "My Obama number is one. I know him through our association at the University of Chicago Law School and through mutual friends in the neighborhood. We have had one or two serious substantive discussions, and when I sent him e-mails from time to time in the early days of his Senate term, he always answered in a sensible and thoughtful fashion. And yet, for assessing the course of his likely presidency, I don't know him at all."

Why do you think HIllary has been out there working like a dog for Obama with her tag lines of "Tell Them Hillary Sent You" and "Jobs Baby Jobs".
Obama winning would be on his own merits. A landslide would be due to the generosity of people like the Clintons who decided to place the well being of the country ahead of their personal desires.

Here is the $.50 per person meal. @ current availible in Kansas City MO prices. You could also double the prices here if you aren't careful with your shopping
Camel Hump Stew
1 and ½ lb of cheap camel hump (If unavailable substitute 2 chicken hindquarters)
1/2 lb white beans
¼ lb lentils
½ head cabbage
3 carrots
3 stalks celery
1 onion 1/3 lb
1 bell pepper
1 can tomatoes with chilies
3 clove of garlic the size of your thumb
2 tablespoon curry powder
2 teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon ground chipotle chilis or for mild version smoke Spanish paprika
Salt to taste
2 cups of rice
Start the beans cooking the night before, as it is just as easy to cook a pot of beans as a handful cook extra and freeze them for later use.
When the beans are soft add the chicken, lintels and spices. Cook until chicken is done remove chicken and separate skin and bones from meat and add meat back in.
Add the rest and simmer for at least an hour.
Serve the stew over rice.

It is great that Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton and others are out there campaigning. Hillary is particularly effective.
But I get nervous when anyone starts talking landslide or tsunami -- cannot take anything for granted!
Any landslide would be due to the Obama campaign's foresight in realizing they had to expand the electorate by registering and energizing hundreds of thousands of new and disengaged voters.
They have spent months and months out day to day every day talking to voters, registering new voters, working the grassroots.
But DON'T COUNT ON a landslide!! A modest and real win is fine.
Get out there and vote and remind others to vote early if at all possible.
This will be a big turnout election and polls are likely to be swamped November 4.
Get your vote safely into the bank ahead of time, if your state allows you to.

Ree,
That JB White article is interesting because of the mention of the conflict between W. E. B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington. It is sad that those two brilliant and accomplished men never really came to terms with the fact that they were both right and needed each other.
All groups need mentors, but the group itself can make accomplishments as a whole through patient hard work if given the opportunity to do so.

Chuck Todd was speaking of this fellow in Nevada this morning, he's an old Republican wise man in Nevada politics -
From the First Read at MSNBC
"NEVADA: Jon Ralston on the early voting in the state: “Third day exceeds second. Turnout will hit double-digits Tuesday. Democrats still have huge lead -- 40,625 -17,509. That’s 59 percent to 25 percent. (Monday it was 13,099-6,419.) In CD3, it’s 2-to-1 Democratic voter lead. Senate 5 (Heck) just under 2-to-1 Democrats; Senate 6 (Beers) about 2-to-1, too. The Democrats essentially are doubling the GOP turnout -- or more -- every day. Can they possibly keep this up?"
More from Ralston from his daily report: "Four years ago, the best the Democrats could do was to capture 46 percent of that day's early voters on any given day. This weekend: On Saturday, it was 62 percent; Sunday, it was 58 percent. Contrast that with the GOP numbers from 2004: The worst day the Republicans had was 37 percent of the early vote on any given day. On Saturday, the GOP turnout was 23 percent of the total and Sunday it was 26 percent. Yes, it's only two days. But it's the two days where - besides, perhaps, the final weekend of early voting - there will be the greatest turnout."

I posted this last night but it dissapeared in the tech glitch. It's really pretty funny when you think about it.
Ken Adelman is a lifelong conservative Republican. Campaigned for Goldwater, was hired by Rumsfeld at the Office of Economic Opportunity under Nixon, was assistant to Defense Secretary Rumsfeld under Ford, served as Reagan’s director of arms control, and joined the Defense Policy Board for Rumsfeld’s second go-round at the Pentagon, in 2001. Adelman’s friendship with Rumsfeld, Cheney, and their wives goes back to the sixties, and he introduced Cheney to Paul Wolfowitz at a Washington brunch the day Reagan was sworn in.
In recent years, Adelman and his friends Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wolfowitz fell out over his criticisms of the botching of the Iraq War. Still, he remains a bona-fide hawk (“not really a neo-con but a con-con”) who has never supported a Democrat for President in his life. Two weeks from now that’s going to change: Ken Adelman intends to vote for Barack Obama. He can hardly believe it himself

Happy Birthday, Tiptoe. You must be figuring your age in dog years! I owe you some blogging gratitude as it was very early one morning when you showed me the path to forgiveness in politics....it involved your recent haircut and it did open my eyes and eventually my heart.
Craig....both front pages of the my local papers had early voting as the number one story. It is huge and exciting.
Glue speed, Obama.

Berg Lawsuit
-----------------
Berg: Due to Procedure, Obama & DNC Admit all Allegations
"Still, for Berg, the issue is clear. He simply wanted answers or objections, he said, and instead received nothing. Rule 36, according to Berg, is fairly cut-and-dry.
"It all comes down to the fact that there's nothing from the other side," Berg said. "The admissions are there. By not filing the answers or objections, the defense has admitted everything. He admits he was born in Kenya. He admits he was adopted in Indonesia. He admits that the documentation posted online is a phony. And he admits that he is constitutionally ineligible to serve as president of the United States."

Patsi, I don't mind criticism, but I do object when "good Democrats" keep jumping for joy over anything good about Palin or McInsane and do the same "happy dance" on anything negative about Obama. And the ones who say they will vote for McInsane, well it is their right of course, but Obama's positions are mainstream Democratic Party positions. We Hillary supporters were very angry and had the right to be. I can fully understand remaining angry over the media and the Obama campaign's actions during the primary. I cannot comprehend using that as a reason to sing praises over McInsane's candidacy and that of the Powerpuff Girl. I have a close lesbian friend in Florida. She recently wrote this to me:
"If you ever get it, I would like find out what he [my ex-boyfriend Rick] thinks of Palin. She is on SNL with Tina Fey this weekend. I wish she and Hillary were on the same ticket. I am disappointed you are so easily manipulated by the media and subcumbed to Obamania. I am still pissed with the 1/2 primary vote for Hillary that the Obama Club gave me in Florida where votes never count.
Lissa"
We have never had an argument til recently. I can understand the anger and share it, but I can't see any reason why a lesbian, a gay man, or any fair minded person would be voting for a party with a VP candidate who will push for a constitutional amendment to make marriage only for a man and a woman, and by so, codify discrimination into the U.S. constitution.
That's what I meant for what it's worth, and there have been a few in here whom have finally made me snap and in the process, I suddenly become persona non-gratia, even referred to as going "Brianesque" in my posts which should now be ignored.
So some people whom I thought were friends here are really not and I've made friends with people who I never considered myself to be friends with but with whom I am.
And.. Patsi, your criticisms have been pretty fair in my book. You've always made it clear that if there was a chance of Obama taking Tennessee you'd vote Dem, otherwise cast your vote for a strong woman candidate, that being Cynthia McKinney. I have nothing but utmost respect for this wise consideration!
And I love you still !

Andrew Sullivan post with great picture of Obama's grandparents, Stanley and Madeline Dunham.
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/10/his-last-parent.html
Hope Mrs. Dunham has good quality of life for time remaining to her, and especially hope that she lives to see her wonderful grandson elected and inaugurated -- at the very least.
She did some very hard work, raising him while he was a teenager searching out his identity and future. She was a real inspiration to him too, becoming a bank VP through work and persistence and determination (and need -- she was family breadwinner).
This at a time when women did not commonly hold executive or middle management positions and "Toot" was without a college degree. She was a trailblazer too.
God bless her.

Odd bit of speculation. I know some families don't take many photographs as mine is one of them, but when the opportunity presented itself to grab a four generation photo, we grabbed it.
It does strike me as odd that there doesn't seem to be at least one of Senator Obama with his grandmother after his wedding, and none of his daughters with their great grandmother. There is a photo *of his girls with his sister and her husband. Mrs. Dunham appeared in one of his commercials.
Has anyone seen a picture that I might have missed?

I also want to say, for the record, that Brian has been largely spot on with much of his commentaries and is an intelligent participant in the political debate. I used to really dislike him, but once I got beyond some of his more jugular slicing posts, I saw that he is often a person of wisdom. Not excusing the excesses, but I don't think people should toss away everything he say. And if we do object to treating people poorly, we shouldn't do it to him either.
JMHO...
GORDO on the other hand....
Ah well, I sort of like conspiracy theorists even when they are just parroting what others are writing or saying. Frankly, I don't think I would take the word of someone called "Texas Darlin'" or her website, to be a conclusive source for Obama's apparently Manchurian candidacy.

From TD Blog:
" ... Martin was scheduled to file an emergency petition with the Hawaii Supreme Court to “release Barack Obama’s family records,” including his “birth certificate and related records.”
We can think of no reasonable cause for denying the public — the electorate, those who will be served by the President — the ability to examine documentation of birth and citizenship for a person standing for the highest office in the land. Especially since 1) reasonable doubt has been raised about this candidate’s eligibility and 2) there appears to be no formal process for vetting eligibility in advance of a candidacy."

They sell them by the 10lb bag frozen. cheapest meat around. I use them for my chicken stock. Just put the stock in the frig so the fat hardens and skim it off.
When you buy that rotisserie chicken because it is a hard day and you are too tired to cook. Don't through away the carcass, after you have stripped the meat off put the skin and bones in a pot and make a very tasty broth to use in you cooking. I save a few of my yogurt containers and freeze it in them.

McCain keeps using the line, "America didn't become the great nation it is by spreading the wealth around."
That is an out and out lie. What in the hell does he think the GI Bill following WWII did? Men and women who would never has aspired to college all expenses paid not only went but actually received a stipend that allowed them to live while doing so. It gave us one of the highest rates of college graduation in the world.
Courtesy of Republicans we now have one of the lowest of developed nations. Those young college graduates then got generous VA loans to buy small homes in suburbs in which to raise their families.
I think some more spreading is in order.

Bowman: If Obama is elected, he will face the worst set of circumstances since the Depression, will he not? With our troops at war in two countries, too.
Compromise and achieving what you CAN is adult and the best way to progress.
Obama is a pragmatist and not the socialist liberal you might fear.
And I agree with you on one point -- I don't want to see a Democratic Congress and president steamroll the country either -- one party rule has its hazards, ably demonstrated by GWBush.
This country is probably center-right now; plenty of work that can be done that will sit fine with that. (Access to healthcare; shoring up our financial system through prudent practice and better oversight; engaging America in green technology R&D; developing good jobs in this country for our kids and selves....and Joe the Plumber)
Obama is not the scary guy you fear.
Posted by: dog's eye view | October 21, 2008 10:37 AM
Renee thank you for saying that. I felt bad, like you hated me suddenly. I feel better now, really :) ... and it's time for me to get less serious I guess.
Bow, everyone knows that he can't deliver everything. Name a President who has been able to. He would not only need filibuster-proof majorities in the U.S. Senate and even then he would be dealing with Dems from various political leanings from far left to pretty much right, and also regional differences among the Dems, especially in the House. All he can do is try and if the Congress stands in his way, at least he will be able to say he didn't throw the ideas away, but was stymied by other politicians with their own agendas.
Ok logging off for now.

Ah, the death throes of the McCain campaign. Today, it's socialism. Tomorrow, it'll be "Remember the Maine!" Boy, it will be beautiful on November 5th, not just because Obama is going to win, but I know that we won't have to hear Sarah Palin/McCain's voice for another two and a half years.

I know those few narrow minded bigots among us are mad because I won't fall 'in line' with one side or the other. It's been like that all my life. I don't conform well enough to suit people and the interests they're promoting. That seems to make a certain type of person mad. Hence, the hate directed my way.
But, if I haven't changed by now, then you can bet I never will. So they can say what they want. It's meaningless to me, except in telling me what kind of person they are.
And it doesn't matter to me who wins this election, because the same people will be running this country.
I know what to say to make all of you happy. It doesn't take a genius to learn the rules. But you'll never hear it from me.

You are projecting, I don't fear liberals, most of my family are self proclaimed liberals. Do I agree with Obama's program? very little. And I don't think that he is going to be able to make all the stuff that he is saying he will do happen. Plus escalating the war in Afghanistan (as he has suggested he will do) with it probably spilling over into Pakistan would be a big mistake. That part I do fear, no doubt.

Not gonna happen Tom! You are NEVER not appreciated. Once in a while you get excited, and so do many of us. The way of the play.
As far as your lesbian friend....I have several gay and lesbian friends who are sitting this out, or voting McCain. I think I have convinced the McCain voters that with McCain ahead in TN by almost twenty points, he doesn't need their vote....that they'd be better off casting their votes for Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente. I wish to hell we had viable parties other than the two we have.
I'm surprised Larry Flint didn't include McKinney/Clemente in his Palin-porn flick, "Who's Nailin' Palin." He supposedly DID include Hillary and Condaleeza Rice. It's open season on women.

Hawai'i Supreme Court Petition
SUPREME COURT DOCKET NUMBER: 29414
EMERGENCY PETITION FOR WRIT OF MANDAMUS
"If Obama has posted a version of his birth certificate, it would appear he has waived any privacy issues and the statutory restrictions on issuance of a copy to Petitioner no longer apply.
It is indeed a very peculiar state as now exists where Obama claims he has released his birth certificate or at least his latest version of the document, and yet claims that no one should be able to obtain an official copy of the same document from the State of Hawai’i or review the source information for the certificate. Waiver would appear to be applicable and render nugatory any privacy concerns.
Obama has claimed he was born in a Honolulu hospital, but there is no verifiable evidence to sustain that claim. An examination of birth records is thus essential to resolve the lingering doubts."

my high expectations were for Hillary. For Barack, it is the Democratic agenda that he pretty much espouses and which are in line with my values. With the checks and balances system in our government it isn't easy to get everything through that politicians want to implement. This was true for Bill Clinton and would have been just as true for Hillary. Nonetheless, the change that Barack offers is hands-down better than the crap we've endured under the Bush critter. Politics can be a very cynical sport and I've always been disappointed when someone I have rooted for has not been able to implement the agenda presented to the people. Such as the health care reform under President Clinton. He and Hillary fought for it, FORCIBLY and still lost. Does that make them less that what they promised to be? I think not. If Barack is not able to break through the vested interests in the Congressional branh, will it make him less of a change advocate than what he professed to be? I would have to say no.
Nonetheless, I've been around this game long enough and my expectations are not that high to begin with. But as I have said before, I'd have higher expectations for a Nutella Jar as candidate, than what we've endured under the existing corrupt administration.

Patsi, someone got me to go to one of those meetings. By then they changed the name to something like "the forum". Those people scared the bejeezus out of me, and let me tell you, it wasn't easy to get out of the sales pitch that went on after the presentation either. I can barely remember it, but it was something like "if you want it to happen, you will have the money to make it happen"... I couldn't understand that. I was a student on financial aid and struggling to make ends meet, and they kept saying that I was using money as an excuse to say no because if I want it to happen, I will have the money to make it happen.

re: high expectations:
mine were higher for Obama, because he realized the urgency of growing the electorate and bringing more people on board and moving forward through a developed consensus.
BUT: I will be happy if we just get our country back and on the right track.
That would seem to be an administration of work right there.
I do think we are going to see some progress on healthcare access: businesses will be better able to compete with a healthier and more stable workforce.
We are playing in a global economy and our citizens deserve good healthcare. We are one of the wealthiest nations ever. That so many of our citizens go without healthcare -- or go into bankruptcy if they need emergency surgery or have a desperately ill family member -- is a national shame.

Barack Obama is holding a slight lead on John McCain in Indiana, 48-
46, according to the newest survey from Public Policy Polling.
Obama’s lead in the state is being fueled largely by voter concern about the economy.
60% of respondents list it as their biggest issue when deciding who to vote for this fall,
and the Democrat has a 59-34 lead with that segment of the electorate.

ETom.... I could never hate you.....
Chloe..... I LOVE your spirit..... I'd rather sit down and have a conversation with you..... ideologues who spout the same old tired talking points on either side are sooooooo boring to me.....
I honestly don't see how the division in this country will come to heal...... yes I know the Republicans started it....... but I don't see very many Democrats that are acting mature enough to end it......
I agree with Craig..... the powers that be are sleeping very soundly no matter which of the candidates win the presidency, IMO.....
but I'm still voting to throw the bums out!

tt,
Many happy returns of the day.
Jamie,
Werner Erhardt's EST was a rigorous method for learning to live one's life out of one's intentions, rather than out of one's circumstances. Philosophically, it owes a great deal to phenomonology and Buddhist. Over a couple of decades, EST evolved into the Landmark Forum, which is highly respected as a training tool by many businesses.

"..., because he realized the urgency of growing the electorate and bringing more people on board and moving forward through a developed consensus."
Dog, I was going to say, "Surely you jest.", but that would be off-putting. Instead, here's how I feel. I clearly see a different Mr Obama than you.
His growing of the electorate seems more like 'let's all go to a party, it'll be a blast' rather than a reasoned assumption of civic responsibilities--the latter involving lots of issue-oriented education.
I don't see a bottoms-up consensus having been developed--if it had, we would surely have genuine universal healthcare as the single most important social issue. Instead, we have some watered down version where the true victors will be the established insurance and medical interests.
As I've said before, I'm a traditional Eleanor Roosevelt Democrat--that will never change. I feel tremendously letdown by the current direction of Democratic politics.

No more McCain/Palin for another 2 1/2 years...
The sad thing is, this is just the beginning for her. She'll have more time as gov and a veep nom/campaign under her belt. The base loves her and I can envision Palin/Huckabee signs already. Yikes? You betcha!

XR
The business precepts of L Ron Hubbard in Scientology are excellent methods of increasing effectiveness in one's life. It doesn't surprise me at all that EST would morph into something used by business today.
Of course all of it was stolen and/or resurrected from Frank Gilbreth (and many others0 who probably got most of his ideas from observation, common sense and history. Of course he had 12 children to test his theories (Cheaper By The Dozen).

Palin should scare the hell out of anyone. She is an extremely effective speaker who either has the ability to spout talking points with absolutely no concept of what they mean or the ability to lie through her teeth for her own personal gain.

Joe the plumber first. Now we have Tito the Builder, Claire the nurse, Mary the teacher .... etc. All named off from signs at a Palin speech.
Someone should explain serfdom to these people and how most of them got their last names in a time when the gap between the wealthy and the workers was similar to what we are becoming now.

Gas prices are depressed until after the election, just like 4 years ago.
