On the Road in Milton, DE

milton_de_web.JPGWell, I've not seen my name "in lights" on a theater marquee before, so it seemed worth sharing. Had a great time with a lot of political junkies here in Milton, Delaware -- a picturesque small town with lovingly restored historic buildings, smiling people and dogs that seldom bark.

Thumbnail image for milton2.jpgSpoke for about half an hour and then about 40 minutes of questions that ranged from intense skepticism about Sarah Palin to worries about some voters not being ready for a black president. (Yes, this group seemed almost unanimously for Barack Obama - or, at least the John McCain backers, if any, never spoke up.)

And they do love their Joe Biden in these parts, as you might guess. Just the mention of his name provoked applause.

Thanks to the good folks of Milton for a pleasant Friday night -- and one we don't have to be ashamed of on Saturday morning.

Sorry I couldn't get over there from DC. There was an outside chance this morning, but my daughter had other plans for me. We'll make it someday.

These McCain supporters are a bunch of lunatics.
I suppose we've all heard the 'KILL HIM' epithet uttered a few days ago at a McSame rally , aimed at Obama.

Sometimes I think "it's great we're finally past that", when I recall the racism I grew up with, watching on TV in the 1960s, mostly. Then I see Neanderthals telling McInsane that Obama is "uh Arab".

  26. Dexter Johnson,
I've been watching prez campaigns since '52, and this "Off with his head" takes the red ribbon for disgusting incitement to riot, mayhem, and murder.

I am told by a more senior member of the family that the dixiecrats, who bolted the Democratic Party after Hubert Humphrey's '48 Convention speech, were even worse than mccain's mob of terrorists. strom thurmond, the republican rapist and professional hate-monger was their candidate. The dixiecrat klan opposed Federal laws against lynchings, because such laws interfered with the States' sovereign rights to ignore any murder committed by white men and enjoyed by white picnickers. So, "Off with his head" appears to be a mark of some progress after 60 years.

The white 'knight' is talking backwards, and the red queen's off her head.

Compared to cheney using the Secret Service to avoid a breathalyzer after he shot that other turkey, and compared to rove & scooter destroying the utility of America's most valuable spy, this shitty little abuse of office is insignificant.

Besides, palin has no more chance of becoming veep than GORDO has of demonstrating that Obama is an illegal alien. And, if she has no chance to succeed in her latest hunt, there is no sense in getting worked up about her.

    Back to bed. G'night all.

  28. WARNING - the following is an extremely long post, even for me. With a few exceptions, it is my post to Solar Crete about Mexico. I tell you this so you can skip it fro the first if you want to. Sorry for the length, but we were involved in some heavy stuff.

x-rep - I am delighted the "business" with Flatus has been cleared up. You two are some of my favorites.
It may sound as if I have a lot of favorites so the "label" means nothing - but not so. There are many who are not my favorites, even if I do not disagree with them.

Sturge - I also would love to hear you playing the pianney. Maybe we could pitch in and pay for a recording. Also, re Douglas - he sounds a little, to me, like Reilly, Ace of Spies.

Solar Crete - the question I referred to was on a small post. I might have already answered it. As to the rest:

#1----Mexicans are Indians, and Spanish-----I was born in Mexico and have spanish blood from my mothers side (Gama-a spanish name) My pop is Indian.

--------- I know that Mexicans are a mix of Spanish and Indian, but I have trouble believing that there was a national identity of "Mexican" back in the days when Americans were flooding into California and Texas. While I am sure the Spanish mixed with Indians, I find it almost impossible to believe that the Spanish considiered the mixed race to be anything other than trash. (I have been assured too often by Mexicans that THEY themselves are really Spanish, not Mexican, today.)

What I mean by this is that the people who might be thought to be the real owners of all that land were the Indians who had lived on it and worked it for century after century. If we stole it, it was from the Indians, just like the rest of the country.

#2 -2nd---California was not basically a colony when it was invaded by us, in 1821 Mexico overthrew Spain's colonial rule, It became a SOVEREIGN NATION.

------It may have been what we today would consider a sovereign nation, but not a cohesive well-defined nation. It was still in a period of civil unrest, and was still a target for the rapacious west. France stuck its gallic nose in there, too. Also, I couldn't come up with a definitive map of the time, but think Mexico's claim to all of California was wishful thinking.

#3- That California belonged to Mexico did not deter Pres. Polk---he believed it was Americas Manifest Destiny ( he first tried to buy it several times--when Mexico refused---he used the conflict of Texas as excuse for invading,Texas was also illegal aquired) to one day occupy the Continent from Atlantic to Pacific, this ( in my opinion ) catch phrase gave the people(with the help of the Media) permission for expanionism, and divine sanction.

---i guess my trouble is with the idea that California belonged to Mexico. That we could buy California is an idea from those times. We bought the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon after he got it from Toussaint
from Haiti - how ironic that we now have Bear here to converse with ( another of my favorites) and share experiences and opinions with.

I can't concieve of Napoleon's owning the Louisiana Territory to the point where he could sell it, any more than I can conceive of anyone owning another person.
But that's now, not then. Then, being a nation meant being able to protect the borders you claimed, and that meant having an organized capable government. I suspect the Pomo's and Mi-woks and other tribes in what is now California didn't get a vote or voice in any of the "ownwership" claims at the time.

California and Texas "got overtaken" by the fact that too many of their residents weren't happy with being part of Mexico - Americans who wandered into the land looking for land, and stayed there.

The people who lived there decided they wanted to be part of another nation - self-determination.

My only claim here is that the US didn't steal California from anybody. People moved there and settled there and that made the difference - Americans like to roam and then settle. The rest of Europe wanted to plunder and conquer - people with homes and families are formidable enemies.

I do not mean to say that foreign policies of any of the times in the past were fair or admirable or even tinged with integrity. They were universally corrupt and deceitful and venal and beastly and protected by churches (oh, those damned churches, again) and
obviously out-lived by more humane philosophies.

I am just saying that California was not stolen by anyone. Mexico was raped and pillaged by numerous forces and nations, and is still suffering today from its heritage as a Spanish colony. I suspect the descendants of those Mexicans who lived in what became California are mighty damned glad that their ancestors are from this side of the border.

If I have inadvertently said something that came across as narrow or bigoted or offensive, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I am talking re a topic I've thought about a lot, but never put forth to anyone before, so am un-certain of my syntax.

Like you, I am horrified with the situation in Haiti, and even more horrified that no one seems to know what to do about it, or even care to. What a sad sad story from what seemed at one time to be so magnificent. I don't see it as pre-destination, however. I suppose if anyone could add to this conversation it would be Bear.
    Bear?

Xrep -- Dixiecrats were still around in the 1960s and 1970s when George Wallace was running for the DEM nomination. My southern relatives mostly thought highly of Wallace and a couple of them were Wallace delegates to the DNC. They were very racist. This was my impression of the Democratic party as a child and didn't want to be a DEM -- so I was a GOP too.

  32. Excellent post this morning, Bethy. It made me think about territorial claims in very general terms--not looking at the very specific happenings in the areas you are writing about.

Anybody or any country can claim anything. I remember back in the mid 70s when Ecuador claimed the space where geosynchronous satellites orbit. Quite obviously they had no ability to defend their claim except in philosophical terms. Bottom line, the claim was completely ignored.

It follows that, when a country makes a territorial claim, it had better be prepared to act militarily to enforce said claim. Kind of like the de facto claim Russia has made and defended in parts of sovereign Georgia.

There are lots of claims in between those two extremes like the bottom-grab for potentially productive oil fields beneath newly open Arctic waters.

If I was to be a lawyer, I'm sure I would find this area of law fascinating.

    Blonde,
When I read your post, all I could think of was what a beautiful thing that was to say. Then you went on and blamed those same people you were defending for ruining our country the last eight years. Blonde, Bush did that

You say something as nice as: "And who are we to pass the judgement on their lifestyle?" and then you contradict it by saying "I sure hope they do not get to "run" the country for another eight years". Blonde, average citizens aren't running the country. Politicians are. And politicans lie, even Obama. What guarantee do you have that he'll accomplish anything?

What if he fails? Shall those who didn't vote for him then accuse you of ruining our country because you did vote for him?

However you've achieved your goal, not to worry. You've made it a nice, comfortable place to be for anyone who is willing to conform to your rules and ideas. Congratulations!

  89. I get annoyed about the whole "bridge to nowhere" thing. The Anchorage Bowl is full, and there is no more room to expand. A lot of people have had to move to the Palmer-Wassila area to find housing. A good 45min-1hr drive from Anchorage (longer in the snow) A bridge could be built across the inlet that would cut the drive down to 10-15min. and open up the whole area for growth. It makes sense to me, but for Alaskans to pay for it 'cos we can afford it. We just recently dug a two mile tunnel to Whittier so people could get there by car instead of just train or plane.

  100. Civil rights icon John Lewis compared Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to George Wallace in a posting to Politico's forum "The Arena," accusing McCain of fostering “an atmosphere of hate” and “hostility” like the one that led to white supremacists’ 1963 bombing of a church in Birmingham, Ala.

Lewis, a Democratic congressman from Georgia who has endorsed Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), pointed in his posting to “the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign,” and said the senator and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, “are sowing the seeds of hatred and division.”

McCain, in a book he wrote with aide Mark Salter called “Why Courage Matters: The Way to a Braver Life,” had lauded the leadership of Lewis in the nonviolent civil rights movement.

Right now we're in one of the deepest economic holes anyone has ever seen. And what we need to do is to stop making things worse by continuing to over-rely on financial markets and financial institutions that have proven to be incapable of performing their core missions: getting capital to where it needs to go and pricing that capital in a way that reflects the risks and underlying economic values. We have to stop digging. Another week like this one, and there won't be much left to rescue."

They figure that if this were true, they would have heard about it from the old familiar faces."

  141. Amen. There are some interesting sitesmade by Deists and Atheists (maybe others) which give original
quotes about a good many of the founding fathers.
The neatest I've found is about how GW would never take communion - he left before hand, with Patsi Custis, leaving Martha to take it.

The preacher didn't approve and asked the prez to set a better example for the people. GW thought that was ridiculous, so the preacher gave a sermon re the duties of public servants.

GW had the preacher to dinner and said the sermon was very good, so in order to stop setting a bad example he would stop leaving church early by not going to church at all.

Of course, such stories run the risk of being called apochryphal, but the sources are given, as quotes from contemporary letters. I suspect the story is quite likey true. I love it.
