Obama's Cash Lead Produces a Big Show

| | Comments (130)

The nice thing for Barack Obama about having the estimated $5 million for a 30-minute infomercial on seven television networks is that he didn't have to put up with annoying questions from Larry King -- as John McCain was having to do tonight while his Democratic rival maintained message control.

King kicked off his McCain interview on CNN with this question, "Are you hampered, frankly, by the Bush record? Be Honest." For McCain, it pretty much went down hill from there, with skeptical questions about GOP running mate Sarah Palin -- and even a reference to how McCain might die in office.

As if the questioning weren't bad enough for McCain, during a break in the interview CNN's John King stepped up to the electoral map to demonstrate how lousy McCain's chances are. That prompted Larry King to say, "Boy he sure seems up against it."

Not so for Obama, who safely reached far more viewers with a glossy, one-sided production that was simply a video version of his stump message, opening with fields of wheat waving in the breeze and ending with his live speech at a Florida stadium.

Thanks to Obama's decision to bypass federal campaign funds, he doesn't have to worry about the money limits facing McCain, who chose to participate in the public finance system. And the difference is that Obama can end the campaign with his own ads instead of relying on free-media interviews that feature unwelcome questions.

    ----------------------------
McCain gave funds to group co-founded by Khalidi

"Unreported by the Huffington Post is that the CPRS, with which Khalidi was for a time moderately involved, is pro-Western and can be characterized as pro-Israel.

Its work has been condemned by the Palestinian leadership and by local terror groups as "Zionist propaganda."

In contrast, the Khalidi organization Obama helped fund as a board member for a nonprofit, alongside domestic terrorist William Ayers, has taken a flagrantly anti-Israel line. Khalidi's Arab American Action Network has hosted scores of Israel-bashing events, including at least one reportedly attended by Obama."

Obama is campaigning on education and economic issues...I wonder how much authority he will delegate to Biden to somehow fix the Iraq mess.
The issue I care most about, getting out of Iraq, is barely mentioned these days. Nobody can fix the economy as ten of billions of dollars continually go the destruction of Iraq...and how's the democracy doing over there...isn't that what we are there for?

  23. Ran across this, and realized how similar it was to Obama's closing argument in Floriday tonight. Brought back memories...

"In keeping with our party's grand tradition, I reaffirm Jefferson's belief in individual liberty and capacity for self-government. I endorse Jackson's credo of equal opportunity for all, special privileges for none. I embrace Roosevelt's thirst for innovation and Kennedy's summons to civic duty. And I intend to carry on Clinton's insistence upon new means to achieve progressive ideals.

I believe that the promise of America is equal opportunity for all and special privilege for none. I believe that economic growth generated in the private sector is the prerequisite for opportunity, and that government's role is to promote growth and to equip Americans with the tools they need to prosper in the New Economy.

I believe that government programs should be grounded in the values most Americans share: work, family, personal responsibility, individual liberty, faith, tolerance, and inclusion.

I believe in community; that we can achieve our individual destinies only if we share a commitment to our national destiny. I believe in an ethic of mutual responsibility in which government has an obligation to create opportunity for citizens, but citizens have an obligation to give something back to the commonIalth.

I believe America has a responsibility to lead the world toward greater political and economic freedom.

I believe that as advocates of activist government, We need to reinvent government so that it is both more responsive and more accountable to those it serves and to the taxpayers who pay for it."

Barak Obama? No, I changed the word "We" to "I", and quoted the Democratic Leadership Council's official Credo...Barak Obama recited the ethos of the Clinton wing of the Democratic Party: Economic Opportunity, Personal Values, Government Reforms, Personal Responsibility, and National Security...

His homage to the DLC in Clinton's presence tonight almost brought tears to my eyes...

  46. ET,

    Kool-Aid--from the Wiki:

"It is also now closely associated with the 1978 cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple, convinced his followers to move to Jonestown. Late in the year, he then ordered his flock to commit suicide by drinking grape-flavored Flavor Aid laced with potassium cyanide. In what is now commonly called the "Jonestown Massacre," a large majority of the 913 people later found dead drank the brew. (The discrepancy between the idiom and the actual occurrence is likely due to Flavor Aid's relative obscurity, compared to the easily recognizable Kool-Aid.) The precise expression can be attested in usage at least as early as 1987[4]. One lasting legacy of the Jonestown tragedy is the saying, "Don't drink the Kool-Aid." This has come to mean, "Don’t trust any group you find to be a little on the kooky side," or "Whatever they tell you, don't believe it too strongly."

I thought the Rays played great against the Red Sox.... they seemed confident and relaxed..... hey they've played each other many, many times....

but the Rays lost their composure when they hit the big stage.... they made way too many errors..... and the Phillies were playing well and did deserve to win, IMO.....

but the Rays will be a team to reckon with in the AL east next year...... I look forward to the many battles between them and my beloved Red Sox.....

The only cover up is the one alleged by you and your failed champion of conspiracy theories. I'm not attacking Berg, I'm stating an opinion as a lawyer and as a guy who's been around the block more than once and can recognize a poor lawyer. Berg failed on a threshold question - standing - that ws easily predictable as an impediment to a successful suit (in the sense that it would proceed to the discovery phase). He failed to get anyone who could have bestowed standing on the suit to join in and keep the suit alive. If he had, the burden of proof is on the party asserting a claim. You (here, and Berg in E.D. Pa.) are asserting a claim and are attempting to shift the burden of proof, having none of your own. But that's in the context of a courtroom. This is presidential politics, and here's the deal - you doubt his citizenship. If enough voters doubt his citizenship and demand that he show a certified copy of his birth certificate to them before they will give him their vote, your man McCain will win. You're trying to push water uphill by trying to convince people here - we're much too small acommunity to matter in the context of this election. Tell it to someone else - who may care.

jamie, I'll have to see that movie - thanks for the recommendation.

  58. Powers should come back. Back when I was a raging Hillary supporter (still am but don't tell Obama), I wasn't upset by the "Monster" remark. I think that it was one of those English words that got lost in translation while coming across the Atlantic.

"Monster" in the sense Powers used it was someone or something who is a formidable opponent not someone who is a horrid or misshapen person,

The press here turned it into an insult and then Hillary had to defend against the insult that wasn't, and then Powers had to be dumped for what was just an unjudicious use of a slang word.

"The Times of London has turned up Obama's aunt—in a Boston housing project. Actually, Zeituni Onyango, 56, is Obama's half-aunt, but she is described affectionately in Obama's Dreams from My Father. The Times says she "is a frail woman who walks with the aid of a metal stick" and for a time mentored children. She has managed to contribute $260 to her nephew's presidential campaign and tells the paper: "I can't talk about it, I just pray for him, that's all. After the 4th, I can talk to anyone."

  107. Anon, it really is fairly ironic that you refer to me in my ongoing back and forth with Gordo as Ishmael. Moby Dick is one of my 2 or 3 favorite books (and I really have read the whole thing several times). I used to be a sailor of sorts (though not a whaler) and when I taught sailing for Outward Bound, I would almost invariably read the first paragraph to my students ot some point of the course not to cast myself as Ishmael, but rather to read to them what I thought was one of the best examples from literature of the connection between mankind and the ocean.

"Call me Ishmael. Some years ago -- never mind how long precisely -- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off -- then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me."

So lessee, if I'm Ishmael, that makes Gordo Ahab and Obama the whale. Yeah, that sounds about right.

don't see as many used bookstores as we used to...... New England used to be littered with them..... we think ebay, Amazon, and a few other online places are getting many of the books we used to find in those old musty but cherished places.... it really is a shame....
