Obama Wins Another Draw

| | Comments (150)

Thanks to a debate so boring that drying paint would be more excitable, Democrat Barack Obama won. Even some in the pollster-anointed audience for this town hall session were nodding off.

Perhaps the longest presidential campaign in American history could not be expected to produce anything new in the final round of debates. But the night's predictable questions invited the candidates to recite little more than stump-speech excerpts.

The rules of this debate allowed no follow-up questions or rebuttals -- another ingredient for a bland recipe of repetitive talking points.

Although McCain tried to get tough, he was so careful that his barbs could not rise above the deafening stillness of the moribund on-stage audience.

Obama did nothing spectacular, but lucky for him, as the frontrunner in the race he didn't need to provide any drama. Advantage Obama.

  13. Point well taken Craig. What are the points of these "debates" if they are sterilized and there is no opportunity for true dialogue between the candidates? This is the direction our presidential elections are headed. Sterile, boring, with little that the campaigns themselves can do to affect meaningful change for the campaigns themselves.

Normally, the tillerman is the man in charge of the tiller, the steersman who steers the boat. If the vessel is a ship you're more likely to have a wheel, which is in the charge of the helmsman.

    Was made to feel,

  26. It's not Obama's Plan. Not Bush's Plan.

    And it's NOT McCain's Plan.

    It's Biden's Plan.

“His running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, said rich Americans should be patriotic and pay more taxes. A more idiotic statement has never been uttered! But then he also said [two weeks ago] that people in financial trouble should be able to renegotiate their interest and the principal on their housing loans. The idea of renegotiating how much you borrowed is a novel approach that should thrill the banks."

Flatus, i must defend Brokaw -- this format was what the campaigns wanted. This is the problem with media figures agreeing to moderate these debates -- and why i wish they wouldn't do it under these conditions. The moderator gets blamed for trying to enforce the rules that the campaigns had insisted upon, even though it's the candidates who try to break their own rules. An impossible situation for the moderator. When this happens, the moderator ought to say, "OK guys, you don't want to follow the rules that your aides forced upon me? Fine. From here on there are no rules. Start debating."

  55. I'd just like to mention that presidential debates are now, by virtue of the BI-partisan, as opposed to non-partisan, "Commission on Presidential Debates." As you probably know, these guys usurped power over the debates from the League of Women Voters, who had the temerity to not take any shit from the two parties. So, because they insisted on fairness and openness -- such as a greater willingness to allow third party candidates -- they were marginalized and this new corporation managed exclusively by the Democrat and Republican parties, took control. The Wikipedia entry is quite informative.

it's my political analysis, ping -- which is ALL i do. McCain needed an overwhelming victory to change the political course of this race, and he didn't get it. Therefore, Obama wins by not losing. I never address the question of who OUGHT to win debates, or elections. My self-established job description is only to say who IS winning. Nothing more, even when I think the one who ought to win isn't.

  63. Sorry -- my first sentence on that last post was incomplete. What I meant to say was, the debates are now completely controlled by the two major parties, which explains all the goofy rules and illogical constraints. Nobody wants to commit a gaffe, even though the people would rather wade through some gaffes and mistakes and get to the true nature of the candidates' positions.

    Asch conformity experiments

The Asch conformity experiments, which were published in the 1950s, were a series of studies that starkly demonstrated the power of conformity in groups.

...It is important to note that the questions asked in this study were very easy. In a control group, with no pressure to conform to an erroneous view, only 1 subject out of 35 ever gave an incorrect answer. However, when surrounded by individuals all voicing an incorrect answer, participants provided incorrect responses on a high proportion of the questions (37%). 75% of the participants gave an incorrect answer to at least one question.

  66. Don't you guys feel like it's finally OK for a candidate to talk turkey? If the Internet has done one thing, it's empowered people to seek and find. I am convinced it is this very thing that has inoculated Obama, in particular, from the Rovian tactics of 2000 and 2004. I remember back when I was an ecommerce executive for a retailer in the '90s that all the consultancies were saying that the Internet would become like an appliance -- used everyday and taken for granted. Finally, it has happened. People can find out things, and the truth will set you free.

  67. Craig,

As such a fan of Machiavelli, what is it in McCain that leads you to conclude he's the one who ought to win? I think Niccolo would look at Obama much more favorably than Sen. McCain.

    Ping,

In an age where impressions and visuals matter more than policy positions, how could you not conclude that McCain failed.

The first question was a stump speech for McCain, Obama used it as a teaching moment.

The second questioner, the black guy, McCain talked down to him, the you never heard of fannie or freddie before this, implying if he even owned a house it was subprime...McCain forgot his name. I don't remember Obama's answer but he appeared more empathetic.

McCain still gives off an air of anger that he wasn't just handed the keys to the white house. He clearly shows a contempt for his opponent that the skilled politicians I have seen hide it better. The only time I remember Reagan being that grumpy is in NH in 1980 when he was paying for the microphone and when he was yelling at commies.

Senator McCain lost points, however, because almost each time he told a lie, he said "my friends." And I quickly grew tired of hearing that tired old snake oil salesman-like phrase.

And Senator McCain's snide dismissal of Senator Obama was unbecoming, revealing his mean, little nature.

My point for Journalist – not Editorial writers – is to get the facts.
All of the reviews I saw jumped so fast to kiss Barack Obama with superficial elements it made me sick

    This does not happen –
Hey George S – Tell my why you think Obama won based on substance – not on hokie pokie bla bla…

By the way – I still think GS is one of the better ones out there – he was just allowing his natural self to be exposed

  85. IMO McCain may have also tamped down the enthusiasm of his base by proposing "yet another bailout". How do you think the talk radio crowd tomorrow morning will be reacting to another 300 billion to buy up bad mortgages?

  87. Champ -- I wish I was smarter because I feel deeply that all Americans should have a realistic shot at owning a home and I can't figure out how we can make this a reality. I think the Community Reinvestment Act is a good thing at its core. Think about it -- people are born, they live their lives and then they die. Is it so crazy to think that, with all the abundance in our land, we as a group of liberated and intelligent people could at least create a social system where people who do their part can be provided a reasonable way to buy a place to live that is theirs for life?

  88. Bear -
I think when the ausie ballet comes around - People will share McCains Anger.

I am Angry - I have studied the issue and worked to get the facts which today is very difficult. So who knows what I am working with... But the theme for our Country to improve is
    FIRST no easy button SORRY
Second - the current Government - REP And DEM have grossly failed us. We Can NOT allow this failed policy to continue, and every fact and indication is Barack is this same policy. I do not think him to be evil, I think he is naïve and wears rose color glasses

Why are you old time Barack supporters not pissed at him as he has shifted a country mile, He agrees more with John McCain now then ever

Thank you for the debate site. tonight.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | October 7, 2008 11:58 PM

  92. Couldn't agree more, Mike. Here's the problem. If you, or anyone else, could own a home and some property free and clear for the rest of your days, you'd be free, and not beholden to the government, and that's the last thing government wants. Government needs you to be a slave, and the chains that bind you are property taxes and debt. It really is as simple as that.

    Posted by: champ | October 7, 2008 11:59 PM

  93. Most Americans think they own a home when really they own a mortgage. There in lies a difference of reality. Home "ownership" reported....BS....that was home loans reported....

Until true becomes facts, nothing will change or improve.

    Have a wonderful evening...oh my it's tomorrow....ciao!

Posted by: DexterJohnson Author Profile Page | October 8, 2008 12:30 AM

  117. Ping:

Why did Obama win on substance?

    Foreign Policy.

Obama presented a way forward. He takes a comprehensive approach that puts the focus back on the war on terrorism and rebuilding our alliances. Becuase of his opposition to the Iraq War - unpopular both here and aboad. Obama will immediately "turn the page" on Bush.

McCain demonstrated that he is obsessed with Iraq and his attempt to "speak softly" is belied by his record, his nature and his worldview.

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | October 8, 2008 12:32 AM

  118. What it comes down to with Mr. McSame is greed. In order for there to be more money available to him, he has to kill off others who would grab a handful. By keeping the war going, he kills off our soldiers. By dropping taxes, he cuts money needed to repair our infrastructure, so more bridges collapse and more people die. Meanwhile, with him in the White House, he could siphon off money just as Bush did, shrugging his shoulders when pressed on the point of the disappearing billions that no one can account for.

    Posted by: benjaminblue | October 8, 2008 12:38 AM

  119. craig already commented on this , but I want to weigh in also...McCain,Obama and their wives stuck around a helluva long time schmoozing and shaking hands and posing for many photos shot with the people's cell phone cameras.
i wondered why they stayed so long; they had had plenty of time to speak to everyone present...where did anybody get the idea any of them cut out early? This is an outrage. It was all there on CSpan....

  121. McCain has plenty of money.

I think he does put Country First. The only problem is that he thinks that doubling down on the same failed policies of the last 8 years will improve our circumstances.

Well not exactly the same - he will make sure we don't fund any more studies re: the mating habits of bears...
But that is not the kind of fundamental change this Country needs right now.

  122. WASHINGTON - Barack Obama made strides toward easing voters' concerns about his candidacy in Tuesday night's debate. John McCain, despite raising pointed questions about his rival's readiness, didn't create the game-changing moment he'll need between now and Election Day.

  125. I have been following Obama for awhile. Ever since he made that 2004 speech - I have been making sure to catch him whenever he was on Charlie Rose or MTP.

And he is one of the most intelligent and gifted politicians out there.

He also has a lot of intangible qualities that no candidate can match. Huge grassroots movement, ability to energize (and organize) a whole new generation re: politics, and he will be the first black President. Which says a lot about the state of Democracy in America (as we are try to spread this throughout the world).

Has anybody counted how many one and two day stories there have been? In the long run I suspect most people make their choices according to their leanings, not because one guy said something and the other said no he didn't.
