McCain's Exit Interviews

| | Comments (330)

Republican John McCain is making himself available for extensive one-on-one television interviews far more than Democratic rival Barack Obama. When politicians cling to these free media interviews at the last minute, it's a sure sign of a losing campaign that's badly outspent in paid advertisements.

You know Obama is ahead because he takes no chances with answering such questions. And when his running mate, Joe Biden, got a local television anchor's questions that he didn't like, his campaign banned the woman's Orlando station from further interviews.

It's a sad state of affairs when a race gets so lopsided that only the candidate who probably won't win bothers to answer tough media questions.

  1. A question for Liberals.

If paying higher taxes is the correct thing so to fund your favorite social program(s), then why do Liberals complain when they learn they will not be receiving a tax refund? Or should they receive a tax refund, why do they accept it, why not sign it back over to treasury, or assign it over to some charity?

Craig I think we define "sad state of affairs" differently!

  3. The local television anchor asked if Obama was a Marxist.

Joe rightfully asked if she was joking.

I wouldn't go back either. Those are Fox News tactics.

Jack----OSH-----made a large pot of this, and froze in 4 diff containers, goes a long way, a very cheap, but very good imo.

single recipe----Round meat ( pot roast) and 1-2 large soup bones

2 lbs meat, that you wash and place in a pot with cilantro, 1 large onion, 1-3 tomatoes, salt to taste, let simmer till meats is tender, them you put in vegies, 2-3 large zuchinni, i cut them up in round slices, 3 large corn on the cob cut in 1/2, carrots, and cabbage ( jack is right make you soups fresh and crunchy sliced cabbage is the ticket) you can eat this (mexican style soup) with rice and lemons, or with out that i like.the trick of it is the water i use about 1/4-to 1/3 gal.

    Mexican rice.....my way

1 large cup of brown rice----don't like the starch in white, open up one can of corn, one can of peas and drain fluid do not throw away put in an other cup, dice 1 large onion, dice 1 large tomato or 2, a little cilantro, and a little tomato sauce (i use a little salsa) about 2-3 large spoons and set aside-------put in a frying pan little oil,,any then put in the rice-----hey where you going,,,,,,watch that rice it cooks fast,,,don't make me come over there,,,,,turn the rice over and over until it gets a little brown, then put in the 3 spoons of salsa of sauce, keep turning the rice until it stops sizzling then put in the liquid from the corn and the peas and 2 more cups of water. then add all the rest of,,,cover on low heat until all water evaporates,,,,,,,you can put this in the soup above or like do with any other meal---i like it with fish.

both are very cheap and goes a long way----hope you like it

  18. OSH--once again the Whiskey guy was right on valentine,,,but only a few drops for the flavor,,one large bottle lasts for 6 mos. or more

Salsa------when i can't steal it from my bro the decan's restaurant i but a cheap ( thick ) salsa from cost-co, them when ever i make steak and eggs for myself i let the steak stick to the bottom of the frying pan put in some of the salsa and a little water, it tastes very good and stretches the amount of salsa, that is why i look for the thick one, and it doesn;t have to be eaten so fast like homemade ones cos of no preservative

Patd-----yeah i like to cook but not clean up,,,my wife the little italiano a (moji) croation in self defense cooks all the same stuff that i do, so i don't mind cleaning so much nnow-------now cutting the grass is another story-----she complained severall time how i cut it,,, one or two little skirmishes about it, then i turned over the lawn mower to her--------i haven't cut the grass more that 10-12 times in 10-12 year haha

Craig, that's what one must do if you want to be seen as standing up to Fox in a contested market.

I don't know why they didn't just buy the station, use it for infomercials up through election day, and then sell it. Goodness knows they have the cash to do it--and it would add meaning to charges that they've bought the election.

  20. Sad affair when the Obama Campaign applies selective censorship – but very Gibb and smart ! After all stay in control and do not let good questions get asked - that only a month ago could be the difference.

The Barbara West questions you refer to where fair and I do not understand why Bidden got so crotchety and testy. If he had a good answer then Barbara gave him what is really a soft ball pitch that he should have hit out of the park.

How could Joe Biden be that unprepared? What an arrogant response – Joe the home depot guy – get real

But NO! Biden knows that it was a fair question that deserves a thoughtful answer. Biden blew a chance in this market to win over some Independents – But hey I guess they do not think they need more.

And Craig – is it the WFTV is banned or that they need to put a collar on Joe!

I wonder if Barack is having buyer’s remorse. To get to know the real Joe B is very disappointing.

(go back and find any personal attack from me to Obama? no way - I do however disagre with his policy)

He was out of line, maybe he did not get enough sleep – or he has true disdain for us Southern people?

And yes her question could have been better prepared to get to the point – but he should have been prepared as the questions are out there.

She should have rasied the same concern but using my language.

Sen Biden – Are you not concerned that a continued drive to allow social policy to override sound fiscal policy will only continue the damage to our economy, That this continued failure to abide by the fundamentals of our economic system is the wrong direction?

Sen Biden – How will you pay for the excessive spending that Barack is proposing.

Now these questions DEMAND an answer – so yes Barbara blew it and allowed him off the hook with no follow up.

  32. Slavery can come in a number of different forms. One can be a slave to your work, to someone, to a substances, food, religion almost anything. In most cases you would not to be a slave to anything or anyone, but there are ways to make one a slave without them even becoming aware of it. Drug dealers and pimps are great at making individuals into slaves. The promises of money, glamor, love, affection, belonging, the allure of happiness, euphoric bless, a way of making your troubles disappear is more than some people can turn away from. If you were to tell these people such promises are filled with deceitful lies, and what very well may happen is a life full of misery and despair, they probably wouldn't believe you. More than likely they would tell you they are a much stronger person than that, "I know when to quit.", but as we all know that is rarely ever the case.

Obama has figured out a way to make you believe your life is going to be so much better under his leadership. Through is charismatic charm, articulate speeches, youthful appearance, Obama has promised to give away $100's of billion to everyone, well not everyone the so-called rich won't be seeing any benefits, create millions of jobs, life is going to be good under his rule. He has made so many promises of free money, and has proposed so many new opportunities that it is very enticing and hard not to fall victim to this scheme. Who is going to turn down free, free anything, especially when the country is going through a tough economic crisis? And the longer we receive the free whatevers, the more we think it is do us. After period of time has gone by and you are still receiving the free give aways, your mind will be convinced that you actually did something to deserve it, you earned this free gift. When this happens you have unintentionally become a slave to a government who's only hold over you is promises of more free stuff to come. But when the free promises don't show up or they get cut off unexpectedly, prematurely, the one who made all the promises has his own problems. Obama's problems have started before he has even become President, how does he fulfill all the promises? The voters are believing the free stuff will start arriving shortly after he is crowned president, but it will take many years even with a Democrat Congress, as it takes years to build re-tool plants, become energy independent, place social programs into operation, and voters may not be very patient with person who has promised them so much and is slow to deliver.

Then too there is always Iraq and Afghanistan. I would not be very surprised to learn we are not only withdrawing our troops from Iraq, but forfeiting on our commitments in Afghanistan. Is this what Joe Biden meant when he said, "Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy. And he’s gonna have to make some really tough decisions, I don’t know what the decision’s gonna be, but I promise you it will occur. As a student of history, and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it’s gonna happen."

"so yes Barbara blew it and allowed him off the hook with no
    follow up."

I wouldn't be so hard on her, at least she had the balls to ask. Something none of the so-called male news reporters would dare ask old Joe. So lets give Barbara a pat on the back for getting Joe's hair plugs frizz-up a bit, maybe just maybe this will cause some of the male news report to grow a set in the very short time that remains.

  35. Solar- Something we all agree on - Cholula! I guess we use too much, we go through a bottle about every month. I'm going with the corn tortillas, that sounds fabulous.

Apple Crisp- for a happy home filled with love
8? baking apples( cortland, granny smith, northern spy are imo the best, but hard to find) - peeled and cut up- enough to nicely fill a 9 in. pie pan or 9 in. casserole
    Mix together :
    1 cup flour
    1 cup sugar
    1 tsp. cinnamon

Quickly beat 1 egg and add to mixture- don't worry it doesn't blend thoroughly
    Cover apples with mixture.
Melt 1 stick butter and pour over mixture.
Bake at 350 for 35 to 45 minutes. You'll know when its done- nice color , crispy parts, mmh. Enjoy

My politics tend to be moderate moving left and right of center depending on the issue. If I had seen the the news item you mention, I would probably mention it.

Now I do think that Palin is totally unprepared to be VP and while the humor and satire have been pretty rough, I don't think that the majority of the questions she has been asked that I have seen have been out of line. Well then you should have no problem when the Bush tax cuts expire. Funny most people I know who are married saw their taxes lowered while Bush was in office. Marriage penalty tax ring a bell? But you being a big fan of higher taxes will embrace seeing this slip underneath the waves.

While i whole heartedly agree with this sentiment,,,,it works ok until the R's have the power again, and then the same thoughts towards the D,s are voiced------us guys in the middle are getting it from the right and the left,,,,i hope that obama reaches out his hand like he said-----i doubt it with all the favors that he owes to the same corps that got us here in the first place,,,,team mentality, greed, and f u i got mine.thanks,

My mother grew up on lard and bread dipped in chicory, if there was no squirrel, rabbit or deer. She's been thinking a lot about those times the last few weeks. Oranges and nuts were their Christmas presents, walking the tracks for coal. I'm so proud of my parents, they really are the greatest generation aren't they?

  70. What's the best way for the Repubs to destroy the Dem Party? Allow SoetorObama to win. After he is in office, the Repubs would suddenly discover (they had the info long before election day) documents which prove with 100% certainty that he is Constitutionally ineligible. The Repubs would demand that SoetorObama resign along with all the other Dems who have gone along with the fraud. But that's not all, the Repubs would then want all the Dems involved in this scheme to be prosecuted and sent to prison. If SoetorObama did not follow the proper procedure after returning to the US from Indonesia, he is an "illegal" alien. After serving a long prison sentence, he would be deported.

This scenario allows the Repubs to avoid dealing the "mess" the country is facing. In two years, the Repubs would take over the House and Senate with huge majorities and in four years easily win the Presidency.

  96. Sturge, many years ago at work we weren't paid a lot. But, we had semi-annual bonuses to make up for that. Usually, 6-10% in April and 15-17% in October. Then people decided that they wanted more money in their check each week since bonus money was "at risk" money, not guaranteed. So, they increased our pay each week, lowered our bonuses. Bonuses became small, but we got them on a quarterly basis. But, they were performance-driven. Which made them smaller. Last year, they cut our weekly pay between $2.50 and over $3.00 per hour and ended the quarterly bonuses. Cost of living raises in July ended about 4 or 5 years ago.

"A vote for John McCain is a wasted vote," says Barr. Barr says Sen. McCain "never appealed to the fiscal conservatives because of his record of increasing the size and power of government. John McCain's refusal to stand up against the bailout tore the wheels right off the so-called 'Straight Talk Express' bus!" "If you want your vote to count, and go towards a leader dedicated to lowering taxes, cutting spending, and drastically reducing the size of government, then you still have a choice in 2008. That choice is Bob Barr," says Barr.

  132. "I'm really praying that Pelosi won't be able to institute the "Fairness Doctrine", otherwise it's goodbye to free speech"....

Rita, I like a lot of what you write, but you are wrong on the Fairness Doctrine.

"The Fairness Doctrine was introduced in the U.S. in 1949 (Report on Editorializing by Broadcast Licensees, 13 F.C.C. 1246 [1949]). The doctrine remained a matter of general policy, and was applied on a case-by-case basis until 1967, when certain provisions of the doctrine were incorporated into FCC regulations.[3] It did not require equal time for opposing views, but required that contrasting viewpoints be presented. The Fairness Doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters. Stations were given wide latitude as to how to provide contrasting views: It could be done through news segments, public affairs shows or editorials."

It has no impact on free speech. In fact, it increased access to ensure free speech. The airwaves are owned by the public and the corporations who run them are charged with the responsibility of maintaining those airwaves "in the public interest, convenience and necessity."

    The Fairness Doctrine
How we lost it, and why we need it back

    By Steve Rendall

A license permits broadcasting, but the licensee has no constitutional right to be the one who holds the license or to monopolize a...frequency to the exclusion of his fellow citizens. There is nothing in the First Amendment which prevents the Government from requiring a licensee to share his frequency with others.... It is the right of the viewers and listeners, not the right of the broadcasters, which is paramount.

"On August 4, 1914 Belgium had been overrun by the German army heading for Paris via Belgium. King Albert and his army had stood up to the larger German forces with such resistance that their acts of bravery became legendary.

Belgium was blockaded by the British and occupied by a German army. Over seven million Belgians faced certain starvation.

"Hoover undertook an unprecedented relief effort as head of the Commission for the Relief of Belgium (CRB). The CRB became, in effect, an independent republic of relief, with its own flag, navy, factories, mills and railroads. Its $12-million-a-month budget was supplied by voluntary donations and government grants."

The Belgians still have much love for him. It is the 50th year since the Belgium hosted the World's Fair, known as Expo '58. 1958 Hoover served as the United States representative to the World’s Fair in Brussels, Belgium - his last official act.

Interestingly enough, the website so completely devoted to Hoover actually is a .be website meaning it is a Belgian website.

I think if Hoover had embraced MORE government intervention in the Great Depression he would have been a hero to Americans instead of being viewed as a failure and Franklin Delano Roosevelt would have never been elected President. I used to think Hoover was cold hearted, but it is clear he wasn't. However, he was a slave to his notion that government shouldn't intervene during crises and in that he showed the deficit of Republican ideology. He could have been a great President.

  141. A question for Conservatives:

When are you going to drop the ludicrous assertion that Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility? Nobody likes tax-and-spend liberals, but I haven't met anyone fond of borrow-and-spend conservatives, either.

Ping, the balance was there when corporations were not allowed to own too much media organizations within a single market. Unfortunately, your party has decimated those rules as well.

Now I am off to watch Battlestar Galactica and then back to bed. It's past 10 pm here and tomorrow morning comes EARLY!

    Hugs to all...

  143. billip, I actually like "tax and spend" because it helps the people. One of my best friends has a bumper sticker on her car that says "I gladly pay taxes. America is worth it". Same here in BE... even though they are very high, I am still better off than when I was in the USA.

Unfortunately, the Republicans put through a telecommunications law that allowed almost free rein as to the number of radio stations, TV stations, and newspapers a person or group of people could own in a single market.

With no fairness doctrine and unlimited outlets, there are areas of the country have little opposing thought. If someone doesn't have access to cable channels or computer internet, they might never see or hear an idea from the other side of the spectrum.

Courtesy of the Republicans and thier media campaign donors, free speech took quite a beating.

  145. billp - go back and read all the posts.
I agree with you - but Bush has an R by his name but his behavior in fiscal matters was poor.

Bush was complacent at best. He did not stand up and call for accountablitity. As I posted before - I think some back room compromise with the likes of Chris and Barney...

  146. Jamie - Where?
The views in those areas reflect the population. The consumer driven aspects can not be disputed.

  147. "Unfortunately, the Republicans put through a telecommunications law that allowed almost free rein as to the number of radio stations, TV stations, and newspapers a person or group of people could own in a single market."

Worth repeating. This opened the doors for a lot of sanctioned BS, from the banning of the Dixie Chicks to group think op/ed pages.

  148. Funny lines here:

Roosevelt blasted Hoover for spending and taxing too much.

Roosevelt's running mate John Nance Garner accused Hoover of "leading the country down the path of socialism."

Hoover did a lot of good, but it was almost all forgotten.

Where? The whole of the United States. It is money as free speech. If a multi millionaire can come in and buy the newspaper, local tv station, cable company, AM and FM radio stations ... all of which present only one version of the news as programmed or slanted by that owner, it has nothing to do with consumer driven desires.

The old bill limited the number of outlets i.e. if there were only one each of radio, tv and newspaper outlet then no single entity could own them all. That allowed for competition and local desires. In areas with two radio stations the station A's ownership had to be different that station B. Again, competition and local desires. This is no longer true.

Republicans only really like competition when they are able to stack the deck.

  150. "... a person’s friends and associates have long been recognized as a critical and relevant factor in assessing their suitability for public service. One’s associations and relationships provide invaluable insights into that person’s judgement, integrity and loyalty. They can also provide a window into a candidate’s social and ideological comfort zones.
