Tonight's presidential debate is all about whether Republican John McCain can turn this campaign around. So I spent the day talking to several of his Washington-based friends, who were not eager to be named, but more than ready to offer advice.
The bottom line: McCain's high-placed enthusiasts say he needs to use this debate to establish two major themes: 1) He's not George Bush, and 2) Barack Obama is an ultra-liberal.
On distinguishing himself from Bush, the McCain pals say that he should forcefuly advocate reversing Washington's big spending ways. For starters he should emphasize his opposition to the president's prescription drug program for seniors, one of the biggest increases in entitlement spending during the past decades. And McCain should remind voters tonight that he fought against Bush's indifference to the dangers of global warming, torture and terrorist prisons.
McCain's beltway buddies also say it's time for him to call Obama the most liberal major-party nominee since George McGovern. Supporting evidence for that claim, they say, is to cite Obama's many votes for tax increases, his waffling on the death penalty and his association with Chicago ultra-liberals such as 1960's radical William Ayers.
Interestingly, some of McCain's on-staff advisers are pulling the other direction, fearful that such negativity will backfire. What he chooses to do tonight will tell us much about who McCain really is.
Join us tonight at 9:00 PM EST for a new thread chatting about tonight's debate.

Liberal is no longer a dirty word, the age of Reagan is over. Name calling isn't going to reverse McCain's fortunes, his unnamed friends are wrong.
McCain has yet to provide one example of why he is the right person to be trusted with the ship of state with a collapsing economy, and that's because he's not. The Republican charge of "they are going to raise your taxes" isn't working.

"He spent years working for Ayers, promoting Ayers’ causes."
Did you listen to the CNN video you linked? Obama has NEVER worked FOR Ayers. The money came from the Annenburg Foundation (a conservative charitable organization) and Ayers and Obama were on the board that distributed the Annenburg money and raised the matching funds.
They were also on the Woods Foundation board together. Again Obama did not work FOR Ayers.
All of their activities related to educational support in impoverished areas of Chicago.
Do you have some problem with giving money to improve schools?

I would not have put it the same way that Champ did , but yes there has been a slight veering to the left, or a hard one by some,to have not noticed, is to not have been paying attention, in the last few months you and Jamie, are very protective of some and not of all, yes yes you both have had your arguments with him or her, and say that to defend just one, if someone like Jamie,Sturg,LL, that is respected by all, or most told me and the other person that we are both out of line I would stfu and listen, if it's only one sided it just is not fair, maybe not my buis, but it's happened quite a few times now.

In the past, the poll has been very accurate about the popular vote count. What this might mean for the electoral vote is up for grabs.

1981, New York City: Just a Bizarre Coincidence?
"It’s 1981, New York City. Barack Obama is residing a few blocks away from Weather Underground leader William Ayers. We know very little about Obama’s life in NYC during that period; supposedly he transferred from Occidental College and completed undergraduate studies at Columbia University. Obama’s academic records and, in fact, the records of his life from those years in New York are lost.
I believe that Obama knew Ayers in New York City, and that he’s hiding the association with Ayers, among others, in refusing to provide information about his life there."

McCain should be a statesman l tonight and spend all his ire on Shrub. I think personal attacks on Obama will only cause the media to set their hair on fire. He should do a Palin and ignore the questions and talk about what he would have done differently in the bailout or leading up to it. What he would have done differently from Bears Stern on...
As long as he is willing to give Shrub credit for anything, he has no chance.

Lost records Gordo? That sounds familiar. If it is true then Obama is taking a page out of Bush's play book.
McCain is not George Bush but Obama reminds me a lot of him. Taking advantage of fear without any really good plan to fix it. People voted for George because he used fear for our security. Now people will vote for Obama because he is using fear for the economy. Still no one has offered why Obama will be a better choice.
Obama camp still saying Obama had no idea of Ayer's past when he sat down in his living room with him. Does anyone here believe that? I guess it just doesn't matter who people associate with.

Well, I sure hope Obama has gotten the news about McCain association and board membership with the Council for World Freedom. This group was the front for the funds going to the Contras when it was illegal to send money to Nicaragua. It was the basis of Reagan's Iran-Contra scandal. And, McCain served on the board of this virulent anti-communist, pro-Nazis Council. See the web page:
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jzQtw1kATj1xCqPcAmwgCKDtNpDQD93LRD980.

Well that's what it took to get us out of the last Republican caused depression.
Posted by: Jamie
| October 7, 2008 6:36 PM
The Great Depression was a worldwide economic downturn starting in most places in 1929 and ending at different times in the 1930s or early 1940s for different countries. It was the largest and most important economic depression in modern history, and is used in the 21st century as a benchmark on how far the world's economy can fall. The Great Depression originated in the United States; historians most often use as a starting date the stock market crash on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday. The end of the depression in the U.S. is associated with the onset of the war economy of World War II, beginning around 1939.

There will be, but they are moving their cash offshore.
Actually most of them are in a cash position right now, chomping at the bit, waiting to start snapping up stock that will be way undervalued, because of all these idiots that are panic selling. After this there will be a whole bunch of people that will have increased their wealth. However they are going to sit on it, because they don't want to pay capital gains. They will be setting up trusts and using the gifting rules and exemptions to avoid taxes, which any financial adviser worth their money would help them do.

I thought for sure I would have an answer by now of how Obama will implement all his new proposals, cut taxes on 95% of the people (even though many included in that number, do not pay taxes) and do all this with a shrinking economy. Less business activity, less taxes, drop off in wealth due to the decline in the stock market, less income, less income taxes....
At least in New York State the new governor is poised to slash the budget. Does Obama have the guts to say that he will tonight?

The Great Depression began as a rolling midwestern farm crisis in the mid - late 20s. Farmers stopped buying new equipment, which hurt factories by the summer of 1929. DOW charts indicate that a volatile market 'topping' began as early August, 1929.
The crash of 1893 and the depression that followed were actually more severe than the misnamed Great Depression. It began with the failure of the Reading Railroad, and soon brought down the railroad industry and the world'd banking industry. Fortunately, the discoveries of gold in the Yukon, Alaska, and New Zealand in 1898 promoted some loosening of credit, so The Long Depression began to ease. By the end of 1900 the US was almost back to normal.
WWII actually began earlier than 1939. Italy invaded the Empire of Ethiopia on October 4, 1935. While low-level Ethiopian resistance continued for several years, Italian's ally, the Empire of Japan, prepared for war, and eventually invaded China in July 7, 1937.

The answer to you question is that it is anybody's guess. At present there is no way of knowing just how bad this is going to get.
Government employment at all levels has been hiding actual unemployment for a long, long time. With a 10 trillion dollar debt, we have pretty well run out of countries willing to loan us Money, particularly when they are in bad shape themselves.
This is actually one of the reasons I'm supporting Obama now. Not for the promises but for the brilliance and willingness to take advice from others. It was the quiet, mature, problem solving orientation that attracted me first to Hillary.
The country will need a lot of studious wonks to analyze problems and propose solutions. It is not a quality that I believe is part of McCain's nature.

Well, it took exactly four days for someone to steal my Obama sign from the front yard. I've already got a replacement that will go up tomorrow. I dearly would like to retaliate by stealing somebody's McCain sign, but that would sort of defeat the purpose of supporting the person who is not the total scumbag in this campaign.
Meanwhile, if it's true, as Woody Allen most famously said, that 80 percent of success is simply showing up on time...I would like to posit that the remaining 20 percent of success is sitting around all day in your underwear waiting for the phone to ring.
With that thought, I will start cooking dinner and retire to the television room for the debate.
Hope to check in with you all later.

As for tonight's debate, I think McCain goes in with the advantage, because he has absolutely nothing to lose. Ceteris paribus, he's going to lose anyway, so he might as well go in and try to land a few hay-makers. If he's a team-player, he might even set up a few "I told you so"s for the Republican challenger in 2012, considering the mess the Democratic administration and congress will inherit. Obama just has to stand there and recite policy positions, there's no need at all for him to go on the attack. Nevertheless, I think it will be as boring and un-substantive as the last debate between the two.
Posted by: champ | October 7, 2008 8:16 PM
The difference is that in 1972 it was McGovern calling Nixon a liar (which Nixon was), and it backfired on McGovern. This year it's McCain calling Obama a liar. It is one of the easiest arguments to make - and it is made in every election.
Being a lawyer - I know how easy it is to tear people down - when you pull out quotes from a transcript or choose to only focus on their worst moments with a vicious slant.
The fact that there is a video or transcript for almost everything these people say makes it a very tough job.

Questions concerning Palin's relationship to potentially violent secessionist are certainly reasonable.
Questions concerning radical figures that helped to make Obama's career are just as reasonable, if not more so, because of potential political favors that will be owed or granted by an Obama administration and a cooperative congress. Maybe Ayers gets money thrown his way, supposedly for his educational fund. Maybe Rezko gets a pardon. Maybe Oprah gets a cabinet-level position. Valid questions.

Exactly Corey.
A-Rod - and every other over paid rock star, athelete, celebrity probably has no clue how much they pay in taxes and it will not change there lifestyle a bit.
The only rich people who care are greedy old men with high-paid accountants that will them loopholes anyway.

Besides, Obama will say that we can best show fiscal restraint by finding the nearest exit from Iraq Fiasco II, and 7 out of 10 Americans will agree.

Yeah, but Obama just wants to expend those military resources in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and maybe even Iran.

I just read about Palin's supporters shouting down the media. Damn, these news reporting depts. are going to have to start hiring a bunch of SKINHEADS to work for them while covering the beauty queen unless they want to subject their workers to hostile environments.
"At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."

Those questions are in fantasy land.
Obama is known as a careful and calculating politician. So what will he do - cut ties with Ayers and Rezko and make sure there is never even the appearance of a connection.
But I do believe he should make use of Oprah. She can be a powerful and mobilizing force. Not on the Cabinet - but by encouraging public service, getting out information, etc.

Give me a break about class-warfare,
Plenty of people - such as Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, etc. - realize the Bush tax cuts were given to people who don't need them and who weren't asking for them.

Obama did not answer any of the questions fully. You all have no clue. Pull your heads from your anus.

Obama could not pass a background check with his mysterious pass.
Hmmm lived in Indonesia, Kenyan father with ties to radical government officials, half brother living in box in Kenya on a dollar a day, had a Saudi Muslim write a letter to get him into Harvard (why not release your grades from Columbia?) Did you not get into Harvard without shell money from the Saudi’s to fund your education? Who paid off your student loans? Release those documents Obama.
Then you have a Pakistani roommate in college and head to Pakistan for 6 weeks? French Riveria? NO but Pakistan. THen you are associated with Louis Farrakahn and Rashid Kashid and then 20 years with Rev. Wright….. PATTERN?
Ask yourself if the Feds would not pass an average person with a background check such as this handling your US information, why would you vote for this MYSTERIOUS guy?????
Voting for McCain the true patriot!!!!!
