McCain Shuns the Wright Factor

| | Comments (431)

Ask just about any veteran Republican operative what remote chance there might be to save John McCain's sinking presidential campaign and almost to a person their private recommendations include the words Jeremiah Wright. Even at this late date they advocate an aggressive advertising campaign, independent of the McCain campaign, tying Barack Obama to his former preacher's provocative sermons.

But, to the consternation of GOP pros, McCain will not budge from his vow to keep Rev. Wright off the table, and the party nominee has made it clear that he would denounce any independent group that dares to make it an issue. Whether McCain can be persuaded to relent is a test of whether he will do anything it takes to win, even if it doesn't work.

A Wright ad, according to Republican insiders, would go something like this: play footage of Wright saying "God damn America" and describing 9/11 as the "chickens coming home to roost" with a news crawl noting that Barack and Michelle Obama were married by Wright, had their children baptized by him, and that Obama himself sat in the pews at Wright's church for 20 years.

McCain deserves some credit for reigning in his party's more devilish operatives and backing away from the Wright story, although it is difficult to understand why that was off limits and William Ayers was fair game in McCain's mind. Obama's connection to the former Weather Underground activist was tenuous compared to his relations with Wright.

Arguments against using Wright include the probability that the Obama camp has stored away response ads featuring oddball preachers associated with McCain and running mate Sarah Palin.

There is some buzz in GOP circles that ruling Wright out of order was one of those spur-of-the-moment McCain decisions, that he might already regret it but doesn't know how to get out of it and not look foolish. Even if he denounced any independent expenditure for Wright-focused ads, McCain would face intense pressure to get the ads pulled.

Whatever points in political heaven that McCain earns for keeping Wright out of the campaign, it was a fateful decision destined to be cited by other Republicans as a reason for losing.

  2. Off the table? There's still a week and a day to go. I'll bet someone will serve up a steaming, helping of Rev. Wright between now & then. It still disturbs me that he sat there & listened to that for years & said nothing. I still think Hil'ry was the best hope for the country this election cycle. If not for the writers' strike, SNL would've called the MSM on their coddling of Obama and it would've been a different story.

Has the early voting made much of anything a wasted effort for McCain? We attacked Syria? Haven't seen much news in 2 days.

Did see lots of Obama & McCain signs down here. More houses with McCain signs but if a yard has one Obama sign, they tend to have 2 or even 3 in one, big clump.

  6. McCain and Republicans must stay on fiscal message – all of the other items are noise despite the basis in fact.

The message must be strong for any chance of victory and to continue to force Obama to the middle. He may not stay there but Obama will be forced to talk about his liberal fiscal and social past and maybe some of the centric themes Obama is spouting will stick – and lessen the damage that his historical self would play.

  13. Jason,

As to your question of the new media. The answer is no, that is why I am hoping the 527's come out with guns blazing this week. Seriously how does a interview like this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iivL4c_3pck , not receive scrutiny by our news media? I don't fault Obama because he has always been a FLLL, Far Left Leaning Liberal, but our news media, because of their bias coverage, has for the most part made a conscious decision not to fully explore his numerous questionable statements and/or associations.

  21. The biggest fallacy in Republican thought on the Wright issue is that 'Obama sat there for 20-odd years of listening to Wright spew his hate.'

Repubs should really attend a Black church or two. This logic would fall by the wayside. I know that by now that an army of researchers have gone back and looked at every published sermon, and they've found approximately four controversial ones............ That's a very, very low percentage.

More importantly, there is no evidence to suggest that Obama actually was present during the sermons.

    A Hippie scramble

cook 1/2 onion, 1/2 cup or so of your favorite mushroom
1/2 cup firm tofu cut into small cubes or meat of your choice
when onions are clear and tofu is warmed add one cup of cooked brown rice and cook until warm

crack 6 eggs and put into a mixing bowl add 1/3 cup of condensed milk. whisk until eggs and milk are mixed. add salt and black pepper.
Stir in the warm rice mixture with eggs.

Spoon the egg mixture into your egg skillet and cook as you would any scrambled eggs.

Ham and sausage are great substitutes in this.

You can also add bell peppers of any or all colors The red yellow and green make for a very eye catching meal. Or add a hand full of spinach.

  24. Perhaps I'm missing something but it seems like McCain has been given the free pass. Judgment? Seeking out the endorsement of anti-semetic preachers is NOT good judgment. But that story is a blink of an eye compared to the obsession with Wright whose "crime" was to say something bad about America and back it up with the bible. You can bet that if Wright had talked about witchcraft it would be all over for Obama - but it's ok for Palin, right? You can bet that (if they were older) if one of Obama's daughter's got pregnant out of wedlock, if would be over for Obama - but it's ok for Palin. You can bet that if Obama consistently mixed up Sunni and Shia if would be all over for Obama - but it's ok for McCain.

How can McCain back the socialist bank bailout and then call Obama a socialist? Oh. Yeah. Because THAT form of socialism is "saving the economy".

I honestly don't understand the blinders people put on to claim that the media is crucifying McCain and giving Obama a free pass. It's backwards, folks.

  34. See - "Wright is racist" completely avoids the point. McCain actively courted people with the same types of views you condemn Wright for having and yet it's not a problem for you? Why? If McCain hadn't vetted Hagee - doesn't that show a lack of judgment? If he DID vet Hagee and STILL asked for his endorsement - doesn't that show a lack of judgment?

This is the kind of blinder I'm talking about. McCain gets a free pass for the same behavior. He dumped Hagee and the storm passed. Obama (stupidly bowing to pressure) dumps Wright and it's still considered an actively issue.

It's mind-boggling - esp. given that the other examples I brought up fell by the wayside to focus (again) on Wright.

  35. mornin' all.

Ping, I think that in your return to party politics, you left part of your reasoning behind. Obama can't win, McCain can only lose? McCain is too far behind in too many states to make any such statement. It's the guy who's ahead who can lose, not the guy who's desperately trying to gain enough traction in two states where he's down by 5-13 points, depending on the poll, and both of which he has to win to have a prayer of making it a close contest in the EC. I'd be thiniking about 2012 about now.

Now really, has McCain decided at this late date to try and salvage some of his above the fray reputation? Perhaps sticking with the truth about his and his opponents' respective positions on the issues might be a good start. Clinging to that 8-10% of the time that he'sdiffered with Bush is less than convincing. He may not be Bush, but he ain't far from it.

And please Obama campaign and supporters, enough about the Palin wardrobe costs - it's had its effect- drop it and get on with talking economics.

  68. Yes, Anselm, that hand up not handout message is resonating loudly with the voters in the context of Bush's corporate handouts. Please help make that a message of the McCain campaign if you have any influence. You know, when after McCain symbolically (only) suspended his campaign and rode into town, guns drawn, to fix the failing bank bailout, he became a full fledged member of the gang who couldn't shoot straight, and now that the mega banks are benefitting from the bailout's largess by buying up failing banks instead of loaning money to them (like the bailout was intended), McCain doesn't seem to have much to say about the economy other than mischaracterizing Obama's tax plan.

McCain has a streak of decency. Let him have the points for not dredging up no political issues. I believe Ayers was out of line as well, but at least it was political and didn't touch Obama's family in the way that attendance by wife and child would have.

Ping may fall over, but I agree that the financial argument is the most moral of the possible attacks.

While I don't agree with the premise or charges of "socialism", at least it is a political argument and I have totally had it with these 527 garbage producers and their even more ignorant conspiracy clown compatriots.

Anselm, You finally came up with something with which I totally agreed. Blue, Patsi and I along with several others were the "Clintonistas" here complete with our high flying brooms and witchy ways. She would have been a great president. She still is a great senator and Obama is lucky to have her support and advice.

I've become content with the change of the generations in the White House and do sincerely believe that Obama is growing into the job.

  75. Anselm, glad to see you recognize that a hole dug in 8 years can't be filled back in in 2. Let's see if that's the message you are posting in 2 years - or whether it morphs into a failure on Obama's and the Dem Congress' part. I do agree that those who think Obama can reverse the collision course the good ship USA has been set on quickly had better think again, and grow patience. The electorate has been way too patient - to say nothing of stupidly gullible- with Bush and the Republican congress who did his every whim for his firstsix years in office; they probably sholdn't judge Obama's successes or failures any differently. Those 2010 midterms will be interesting to watch.

And to be fair, I think all of these pastors are a minor distraction, like the social issues of McCain's divorce. The viewers seem to have reached the opinion that the economy and Iraq are the main issues. Who knew that the American people would have such good judgment.

    Anselm

This one always sounds great in Republican speeches to the crowd except that every time a newly elected GOP looks into it, they find out that the "hand up" is way, way more expensive than the "hand out" in the short term. Since all they have is "the short term" before the next election and don't want to be seen as a spend thrift, the status quo remains status.

I was amazed (why, I'll never know) that McCain didn't try and use the appearnce as an opportunity to lay out his positions and contrast them with Obama's - you know, act as if you can listen and respond thoughtfully - instead of cutting Tom's questions off and belching out talking points. I almost spit my coffee up when he tried to explain policy differences between him and Palin as being a result of them both being mavericks.

    Pogo,

McCain has never been the brightest bulb in the points of light known as Congress. He is a decent man, but his elections have always been talking points or opposition punchlines and a jovial nature of the sociable man telling joikes. He married money so he didn't actually have to work for a living. Expecting him to have ideas other than the boilerplate is pushing him outside his comfort area.

For a while I was even considering voting for McInsane but then I decided that only "insane" one in this situation would be me, voting against my rights and interests. I still question the real reasons why Barack Obama snubbed Hillary vis-a-vis the VP running mate slot. However, I have become more impressed over time with his demeanor, his knowledge, his ability to respond and his desire to make a better world for us all. This comes on the heels of private polls we have seen that show the presidential contest to be tight in Arizona. Till, who was from Chicago, had come to Mississippi in August 1955 to visit his uncle. J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant, the husband of the woman Till whistled at, snatched Till from his bed one night at the family's home.

The 14-year-old's body was found in the river three days later, a cotton gin fan was tied around his neck with barbed wire. His left eye was missing, as were most of his teeth; his nose was crushed, and there was a hole in his right temple.

"The heart of that case has to be this: reminding voters that when they elect a president, they’re not just electing a super-Treasury secretary or a higher-level head of Health and Human Services. They’re electing a commander in chief in time of war."

  140. Gordo, it doesn't matter to me whether you're for McCain, against Obama, or both. You have promised time and again disclosures that would derail the Obama candidacy. The fact that the sources of those disclosures, now not appearing to be forthcoming, are republican-aligned sources that won't put them forward because they are responsive to McCain's campaign wishes is a problem impacting the credibility of your claims. Considering that you have relied on Berg in your dogged attempt to prove that Obama is not constitutionally qualified to serve as president, but have offered no proof of the same that passes even the giggle test (but rather have called on Obama to dispute your unfounded claims) doesn't lend a lot of credence to your claims. I just want to see the things that underlie those claims.

  166. Gordo - again - you are the person who has been promising the bombshell here. Why should I believe anything you've asserted has any more substance than those empty promises?

And Berg is the plaintiff/lawyer who supposedly has the goods on Obama. FACT - if Obama's eligibility to serve constitutionally at issue ither than by speculation and innuendo, he might produce the documents to rebut the challenge IF THE LAWSUIT PROCEEDED THAT FAR. Once an issue becomes a matter of litigation, disclosure of documents to prove or defend is a matter of litigation tactics. Now tell me this - if this lawsuit is such that Berg won't comment on it because it is a matter in litigation (as he has asserted), how is this a search for the truth about Obama for the purpose of disqualifying him for the office?

If Berg had documents that proved Obama was Constitutionally ineligiible for the office of POTUS, he would make them public - fact.

If anyone had documents proving that Obama is either a "naturalized" citizen or an "illegal" who has probably been using a name (BHO) that is not his legal name for about 30 years, they would make them public - fact.

When you hire people to do jobs like that, some do things they shouldn't, whether canvassing or asking people to register to vote. if they are paid by the number of registered voters, it will get very dicey to be sure, but I absolutely reject the idea that the organization was doing anything nefarious. Of course many on the right will think that as they don't want the masses to vote, much less be registered to do so.

OK,who registers voters? ACORN or the OH (for example) Boards of Registrars? Just curious. In WV the BoR does the registering. Some voter registered under the name Mickey Mouse isn't likely to be admitted to vote unless he shows up with big ears, a big buckle and a tail. And if I commit the felony of filling out voter registration forms 45 times for a homeless guy because I'm soft hearted, chances are pretty good that even the county BoR here might notice that 45 people with my name, SSN and address are registered and cancel about 44 of them. They certainly aren't going to let 45 people under that name and SSN at that address vote - after all, aside from George Forman, how common is that repetitive name gizmo? And I think it's a remote possibility at best that other places have less sophisticated voter registration procedures than my little WV backwater. Yep, that's some big problem.

Gordo, you're simply wrong - Obama wasn't using the legal system - Berg was. Anti-Obamites need to find someone or some organization who has standing to challenge Obama's bona fides if they want to do so in court. Bad law, bad planning and bad lawyering. Predictable result (which I predicted). Too bad.

  205. Blue, from one Hillary supporter to another, I am sure we share our disdain of KO's sexist attacks on her during the primary. Although Olbermann does often great commentary, that stuff he was doing after Hillary started fighting back was simply indignation to show the world how the woman needed to be knocked down. It's history at this point, but it's how I feel, and while I can watch him now, I still think he's sort of a lout.

I am over the bitterness though when I think of KO's conduct then I sort of fire up. Right now my focus is on the Obama likely win and finally, HOPEFULLY, a new progressive direction for our country.

In fact I enjoy their back and forth. Pogo being a lawyer looks at it from that view and I learn bits and pieces from his posts. Same with Jamie, she was pretty versed in adoption procedures. Unless I've missed something, he jokes some about it but doesn't attack Gordo personally. You on the other hand just make personal comments and mock him. You focus a lot on Gordo instead of ignoring it. Then you make this statement "He should be ashamed and we shouldn't even engage him." suggesting something that you don't seem able to do yourself and it if in this case it is due to your statements that the subject continues.

The very few in the top percentages control about 90%+ of the wealth of the country, but they pay only 40% of the taxes for the Federal Budget. The rest of the expenses of the nation are shoved down on the broad middle class. They've got the goodies and their hard working salaried brethern down below creating that wealth for the top percentages get to cover the rest of the bill as well.

The funny thing is that if you taxed them at the 90% rate of pre 1960, they would still be outrageously wealthy. Kicking them back up from 32% to 35% bracket will hardly be noticeable.

What is comes down to is that in the money demographics for advertisers (18-35) for products marketed to young adults and (25-54) for products directed at families, O'Reilly is slipping. His audience is in the often discounted (35-64) with heavy emphasis on the 54+.

  251. More important than why Obama needed these radical fellows, they actually helped him get where he is today, is why they wanted him so much?

Obama's concept of growing the economy from the bottom up is totally a stupid concept and that really scares me. I am sure Ayres and Wright like this concept. If anyone here understands this I would like a serious explanation of how that concept can work. Education/training, and I am all for that, is the only thing I can think of that will help those on the bottom move up the ladder and help the economy.

Giving away money will not grow this economy even though it can buy an election. I have worked with poor people throughout my 36 year career and give away programs help them for the moment but do nothing for improving their future.

You can't pay people out of poverty you have to change their programming. Children raised in welfare homes often continue the practice as adults. I suggest that instead of having children recite the Pledge in school, they should recite the Pledge to make myself something when I grow up. Their families certainly don't suggest or encourage it.

My mom did it to me. She programmed me, starting as a small child, that I would go to college and would be a nurse and while most of my friends were getting jobs, married and having fun after high school I was going to college. I didn't really want to but I was programmed.

When I am providing medical care for my inmates and I see a hint of anything between a young person's ears I give them my education will get you off of this trail of doom speech. I give them encouragement and resources. They often leave my office with a smile or a look of surprise that I even cared and thank me for the advice.

That said, why in the world would anyone take joy in seeing someone convicted of a crime, of being disgraced, and of having a career in which in which his constituents reelected him time-after-time indelibly tarnished? Especially if one of the reasons for his conviction is because people are really upset with the Congress?

It'll be interesting seeing if Gov Palin taps someone for his seat before next Tuesday. And if that someone will be allowed to take Steven's place in the election.

Despite his guilt, I think there will be resentment (in Alaska) that the jury of his peers was thousands of miles away from where the series of charges found life.

Hard to get anything built for less than $50/sq. ft. and or claim somthing you have held and used for 7 years was just being stored for the owner. I've read the L curve. I think it just proves the same basic fact. As I said, if an individual taxpayer doesn't pay the average tax bill (total income tax / total tax payers) then that individual taxpayer is not carrying their own weight. This is a country of equal opportunity and I believe it should be one of equal obligation. I personally could care less how wealthy someone becomes and I don't think that they owe me something extra because they become successful.

CT this is exactly the way you grow an economy. If you do it from the top down you have medieval royalty and serfdom or in the modern context Mexico with the ruling families holding all the wealth while those underneath can't survive no matter how hard they work.

A country without a developed and strong middle class is doomed. Our middle class is shrinking and losing it's buying power. Which countries have middle classes that are growing? India and China.

Henry Ford may have been a jerk, but he knew he had to pay his workers well if they were going to have the money to buy his cars. All wealth is at some point based on the labor of others under it, and if you don't believe that look at the stock market and all the retailers who are expecting a 2% drop in their holiday sales.

Jaxtrader, the majority of the people at the tippy tippy top of that curve are heriditary wealth. You know the ones who are trying to get the "death taxes" cancelled who don't mention that you have to have a net worth of more than two million to even pay the darn thing.

These are the folks born on third base who think they have hit a triple. They are the ones who get into the very best universities courtesy of "legacies" and hefty grants to the Alumni fund.

This is only the land of opportunity if you are fortunate enough to be able to see the way up and have people and mentors in your life to help you up the ladder.

No you can't pay people out of poverty, but you can stop standing on their heads to keep them down.

  272. I was living about 10 or so blocks from where KOA disc jockey was assassinated by white supremer guys in Denver, in 1984.

    wikipedia:
    Early life
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Alan Berg attended the University of Colorado at Denver before transferring to the University of Denver.[citation needed] At age 22, Berg was one of the youngest people to pass the Illinois bar examination, but he began to experience a series of neuromuscular seizures.[citation needed] He was also increasingly dependent on alcohol. Berg's first wife, Judith Lee Berg (nee Halpern), convinced him to quit his Chicago law practice to seek help. They moved to Denver where Berg committed himself at St. Joseph's Hospital.[citation needed] However, after his release, he continued to be plagued by seizures. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1976. After it was removed, he made a full recovery and his seizures ended.

    Radio career
Alan Berg later opened a clothing store where he met Laurence Gross, a radio talk show host on KGMC-AM in Denver. Impressed with Berg, Gross made him a guest on several occasions. When Gross took a job in San Diego, Berg was hired as replacement at Gross's behest.

From KGMC, which had changed to KWBZ, he moved to KHOW in Denver. After being fired from KHOW, Berg went back to KWBZ before it changed to an all-music format and he was again fired. Berg, now unemployed, was courted by KTOK in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan. He ended up taking a job at KOA in Denver, debuting on February 23, 1981. He worked there up to his death.

Listeners in more than thirty states over KOA's 50,000-watt signal heard Alan Berg's opinions about gun control, homosexuality, religion, antisemitism and other topics. Berg became notorious for upsetting callers who vociferously disagreed with him to the point of being unable to express themselves which Berg would then further berate. While his style was controversial, in the latter stages of his life, Alan Berg did begin to tone down somewhat. This was especially true after he returned to the airwaves after serving a suspension for berating former Colorado Secretary of State Ellen Kaplan on his show.
    Death
At about 9:30 p.m. on June 18, 1984, Alan Berg was shot thirteen times in the driveway of his home next to his Volkswagen Beetle.[citation needed] He was returning home after a dinner date with his ex-wife, Judith.[citation needed] They were attempting to reconcile.

The murder weapon, a semi-automatic Ingram MAC-10 which had been illegally converted to an automatic weapon,[citation needed] was later discovered at the home of one of The Order's members by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Hostage Rescue Team. The weapon was part of a homemade altar dedicated to Adolf Hitler.
Ultimately, four members of The Order were indicted, including Robert Mathews, who conceived the plan to assassinate Berg.[citation needed] However, only the actual shooter, Bruce Pierce, and the getaway driver, David Lane, were convicted.

Lane, a former Klansman who joined the neo-Nazi/Christian Identity group Aryan Nations, steadfastly denied any involvement in Alan Berg's murder, but also never expressed sorrow over it. In the History Channel documentary, Nazi America: A Secret History, Lane, who had called into Berg's show and deliberately goaded him into an argument, stated: "The only thing I have to say about Alan Berg is: regardless of who did it, he has not mouthed his hate-whitey propaganda from his 50,000-watt Zionist pulpit for quite a few years."
Lane died in prison on May 28, 2007 while serving a 190-year sentence for violating Berg's civil rights and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statutes.

Films and plays inspired by Berg's assassination:

Berg's murder was the basis for Eric Bogosian's 1987 play, Talk Radio and the 1988 motion picture adaptation directed by Oliver Stone. Steven Dietz's 1988 play God's Country and the 1988 film Betrayed were also based on the incident.

I do wonder how it feels to be Alaskan right now...and I've actually been there many times, and love the state...but two of their top officials have been exposed. Ted Stevens has been found guilty of crimes, and Sarah Palin...at the VERY least...has demonstrated repeatedly that she doesn't have the intellectual gravitas to have been put in line for the presidency...IMO.

I think individual tax payers ought to carry their own weight and be responsible for their obligations at the same time.

We all use the "commons" in varying degrees. Commons would best be defined as things like the Federal court system, national transportation, communications and utilities systems. IMO, Obligations would fall on the individual through ownership of securities in large corps too.

Even the discussions here....noone sees it. Everyone is cutting back in their personal lives but feels no compulsion to demand that Gov't do the same...I don't get it

I'm not "blaming" the rich guy. I'm all in favor of getting wealthy. I've pretty much had a reasonably comfortable middle class life and even when there were bumps in the road was able to work courtesy of the good education. Of course during the roughest stretches I used to say that every time I got past the poverty line, they moved the darn thing.

What I do resent in many comfortable people is that they make assumptions that have little to do with the reality that must be lived by those in strained circumstances much less poverty. They frequently act as if the person with a bad family life, bad school, bad surroundings, bad health care and limited positive influences is some how totally at fault when they fail to take advantage of all the "opportunities".

I certainly won't feel that way if McCain is elected...nor if something happens to him and his running mate ascends to the presidency. I am appalled by the people who claim they think Palin will be just fine in the job...of either the vice presidency and the presidency. What in her performance of the past two months would make you believe that?

If you had listened to the Obama speech today, he did mention spending. He actually promised to have the budget analyzed to eliminate unproductive programs and combination of programs for efficiency and so on.

You are right that unfunded mandates cripple the state budgets. Just as Clinton was starting to bring the budget into line, I believe Obama will do the same. Even if he didn't believe that the sheer reality of the current financial crisis will have to be handled before much else can be done.

The Republicans have been the major spendthrifts, lets see if the Democrats can clean up the mess.

I don't feel I'm confusing anything with anything...and certainly not eloquence with intelligence in the case of Obama. If you cannot see his intelligence, I believe it is because of the color of the filters you look through. I doubt his presidency will be the 'glory land' some hope for, but I'm equally certain it won't be the doom of America, as some of my Republican friends would have e believe.

As for Palin, I'm singularly unimpressed with how she's used her 'executive experience'. And I would point out to you that it's much easier to be a big fish in a small bowl than to be one in an ocean. Like it or not, Alaska is big only geographically.

Both McCain and Obama have spoken fairly often of cutting spending. McCain would like to take the 'ax' approach to spending cuts, whereas Obama has suggested that using a scalpel might be wiser. I agree that spending habits will have to change, but I agree with Obama that it should be looked at carefully. The people in greatest need are usually the ones hurt when that is not done.

And Jamie made an excellent point above...that those who are 'well off' often view those who are not as having landed where they are 'on purpose'. Perhaps some do not use the gifts they've been given, but most either weren't lucky enough to receive those gifts...or have no clue how to begin to use them...either because they lack the mental or physical resources, or because life has dealt them a hand they just can't figure out how to play.

Unless they are giving away a whole hell of a lot of that money, it is just plain disgusting. Come to think of it, even if they are giving it away, they are still destroying this country and they are still disgusting.

You said it yourself earlier today. You were programmed to go to college and to become successful. The people you're talking about were programmed to be what they are. It's not destiny, per se, but you could probably call it a self fulfilled prophecy.

I'm an investor, and I have no true choice about what the CEOs of the companies in which I've invested are paid. You're bright enough to understand that and, unless you have a hell of a lot of money (shares), you haven't the clout to influence executive pay, either. That's a foolish argument, IMO.

I agree that you should be able to EARN as much money as you can...but not that greed should allow you to run rampant over anyone not bright enough to detect any shenanigans you might get up to. Not accusing you of anything, BTW, but if you'll look at Wall Street, you'll see plenty of instances in which shenanigans have been gotten up to....

It is hard to be sympathetic to bad choices. What leads someone to drop out of school, get pregnant without being married, take to drugs or alcohol, or commit crimes? I doubt it is nature because I have seen too many beautiful children who certainly wanted everything that every other beautiful child wants. So how do you change nurture?

That discussion could take hours upon hours. Basically, I opt for assistance and opportunity tied to performance, and bring that assistance as close to the infants and children as possible with good health care, good day care, adequate diet, decent housing and safe neighborhoods.

The enforcement side of performance is the hard part and requires almost one on one counseling and assistance. That is a very, very expensive model in the short term but at least it holds out hope that you can change a life and cut down on demand eventually.

Unfortunately, we have opted for the short term cheaper "maintenance" plan that just keeps people where they are while creating more generations of the same and producing a whole lot of middle class jobs for social workers, prison guards, and police.

You know darn well that the revolving boards of directors set the salaries and bonus compensation packages. Good ol' Joe gets a nice raise voted in part by good ol' Jim and since Joe knowls good ol' Ed over at good ol' Jim's company, he recommends that good ol' Ed give an equal raise to good ol' jim which Ed does because he knows that Jim and Joe are going to talk to his board and that there will be a nice year end present for him come the next negotiation.

  308. Changing programming, not handouts, will be the only thing that will work to get the bottom off the bottom. I have decided that.

I had a young man come to see me. He was only 18 and his worry was that he had not yet been able to get any women pregnant. He was programmed to believe that speading his seed around was how he proved he was a man.

My head spun around several times and green stuff came out of my mouth before I was able to tell him that I thought he might want to get out of prison, get a job to support the woman and the child before worrying about that. Did he think I would do some fertility studies?

I work with many of these young women who think that more babies is how they get more money. When they are laden down with kids it is very difficult to do anything else.

It is not always intelligence either. Years ago while doing diabetes education, I had a young couple come in because the wife just learned she had diabetes. They both came from welfare families. Both were very sharp and caught on quickly to the complicated concepts involved in understanding diabetes.

I talked with them about their goals and they had none. I told them they both had great potential and needed to use it. They just weren't interested.

I have thousands of these stories, no I won't share anymore but it has lead me to understand that it is programming. Yes, there are those who are just unlucky. There will always be those we have to support and I am OK with that. No extras though.

Will an extra stimulus check help?

    Posted by: ct | October 27, 2008 6:55 PM

  309. Well, Carol...

No extras, though? No extras for the disabled among us? What choice did they have? And what choices do they make that keep them in living situations where they not only have no extras, they may not even have kind and decent care? That lack of extras is the least of the fears of the parents who know they can't live forever in order to protect their disabled children...but it is one of the worries.

Our work histories are somewhat similar. I, too, worked in corrections...and two of my best friends were nurses at the same institution where I was school principal. Which has nothing to do with my point. I have run into both phenomena you describe above...the young man who judges his virility by the number of offspring he's produced...usually each with a different mother...and the very bright who simply seem to have no motivation. I think those kids can be 'worked with'. It takes a willing ear, and someone to lead by example, but that surface apathy often masks fear that nothing they can do will change their life circumstances.

Personally, I'd love to still be there as this new chapter of history unfolds. It lends itself to leading by example.

To lay the blame for this stuff over which they have no control on the various candidates is silly. Now the people who come to their rallies are a different matter. There the candidate has a responsibility not to harrangue the crowd or add to the prejudice.

I just looked it up in an antique dictionary, the only one I could find in a hurry. Shiftless: Incapable, inefficient. That sounds like those CEO who sold my investments and nope I don't want to support them either. So no to the shiftless unless they qualify as retarded. Yes to the retarded unless that includes our current president and then no to him.

Wouldn't it be fun to be able to chose who we want to help with our taxes.

  326. Actually, as I'm sure has been already mentioned, a GOP PAC has already released such an ad, and the GOP has committed 2.5 mil to run it in four battleground states.

But here's why I don't think it will work: Because Wright actually makes some sense to thinking people. Plus, the guy served in the military for, I think, three tours of duty with one as a medic. The ads focus on this very complete thought that we have financed terrorism, and so, should feel accountable for the retribution which followed in the form of 9/11.

It's a little bit like this socialism thing. It's not like we want the workers to own the product of their labor. But we do want a more equitable distribution of the profits, something which took place, more or less, back when labor unions had some yank. I think at his core, Obama does not want to mandate "spreading the wealth," but he dares to empower workers to organize, something they have been reluctant to do because unions have been de-fanged. The point gets pounded home by Republicans over and over, until people hearing it start trying to reconcile why it doesn't bother them, then start to realize that yeah, that's right -- and we don't mind so much.

With Wright, i think if people hear those very soundbites that are played over and over, they might actually listen. And when they do, they will realize that Wright is offering his opinion, and a very biblical one at that, which is that you reap what you sow.

I still remember when I went to youtube and listened to those sermons in their entirety. I came away thinking that this guy actually has something to say worth listening to. And, if you toned down the rhetoric and said it in a more mainstream church, people would buy it without question, because there is an essential truth there.

Of course, Wright showed his ass after that as just another opportunist, which really disappointed me. But it made me respect Obama even more, because he didn't dump Wright for his ideas, he dumped him for being a selfish asshole.

I say bring on Wright. I know this is probably a little too much wishful thinking, but while it may harden the base even further, it just might make sense to undecided independents.

How old are you? Lazy and shiftless is the old canard against all black people. You have to step back in time to the era of Stepin Fetchit to see it reflected in movies, but the combination of the two words is like saying won't work and stupid when they do.

Stepin Fetchit was a comedy genius. Unfortunately, the character he created became an image of a whole race.

  335. I want to say something in defense of CT. I "get" what she is saying. The reason is a classic case study I had the opportunity to see while my son played high school football and afterwards.

The entire team came to my house after practice every day. Many of the team members were black. Others were poor whites. A few were affluent. What I saw happening was that EVERYTHING depended on what messages kids were getting from their parents, or caretakers.

CT is absolutely right about "programming" -- it depends on what parents are encouraging their children to think.

A lot of the young black players went on to college and careers. That is because their parents "programmed" them to believe in education. A lot of the poor white players went to school. In one case, it was because a gay couple became the "Big Brother" of a young man. They "programmed" him to excel.

Others, black and white, did not do so well. One boy that I had high hopes for spent his first several years out of high school enrolling in different colleges so he could get the student loans, then screw off.

And this speaks to Jamie's comments about old rich: I saw a few boys with EVERY opportunity and financial backing screw up because they had no "programming."

So don't beat up on CT for telling the truth. Everything depends on how someone is taught.

  344. Jamie, I am old enough to know but those who are prejudice around my parts use words with less letters in them. Don't really hear much prejudicial speech these days re AA , more about gays. Maybe that is because I work at the prison.

Liberals aren't very popular here either. I have always been a very blue girl in a very red area. I have pissed off many over the years and enjoyed doing it.

After the way this entire political season has gone, I am not too proud being liberal anymore. Ask questions and you are prejudice. Don't see Obama as the next Messiah and you are a Repug.

All the unnecessary hate speech regarding women whether they were intelligent, well spoken, and spent their entire life preparing for the presidency or whether they are young, less experienced, more country, and just wanted to make her state a better place. They are both c---s. We c----s make up more of the voters and we have not only put up with this we joined it. Sad How does a mother explain that to her daughter?

Many liberals have come to sound too much like the left's version of the radical right. I guess they decided that If you can't fight them with decent speech just join them with nastiness. This election season lasted way too long and I hope the next one doesn't start the day after Obama is elected.

I took the weekend off from the news and just watched horror movies. It felt about the same.

  346. Patsi...

I don't think anyone was questioning that Carol is right about programming. I certainly wasn't. What I do question is the statement that those who can't provide for themselves should get 'no extras'...and she amended her stance.

There are many whose programming almost guarantees their failure...but 'almost' is the most important word in that sentence. It's why people like Carol and I do the kind of work we do. 'Almost' means there are some who can and will change the messages of their programming.

One of the kids I'm proudest of left the institution where I worked and later became a city bus driver in Seattle. He had some additional problems before achieving that success, but what a great job! Good pay, good benefits...a proud and productive member of society! There are many other success stories, but there are more who ended up in adult correctional institutions because they couldn't overcome their programming...and also because many of them are disabled in some way...less intelligent, poor social skills, etc.

The world is hard enough without the haves making it more difficult for the have nots.

I do not think Gov. Palin was a good choice for VP but why can't people just stick to the facts without getting personally nasty. I don't think she deserves this any more than Hillary did. I also don't think Biden was such a good choice either. He has made some pretty dumb comments but gets more of a pass.

What do you think Palin's motives were for running for Governor? You probably know more than me so please enlighten me.

She is a Repub and was running against another more powerful Repub. She fought the oil companies. That wasn't popular with them. Up until she took on this assignment she was a very popular Governor.

    What were her motives?

    Posted by: ct | October 27, 2008 10:01 PM

  357. UB, it's no different than what I've experienced at work. Doesn't make it right, but that's how it is. As for helping, the economy has to be hurting that. We have had many lunches at work to benefit people from work who are in need. Sadly, many of these fundraising lunches have been to help women at work who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I wish the economy was better and people could afford to donate more money to those who are in need. As I've said before, my sister has two children with Downs Syndrome. She fought very hard to keep her kids lives as normal as possible. She kept them in regular classes as much as possible. They did have teachers aids to help them at times. But, many times she had to fight for their educational rights. It's never been a money issue, just one of her fighting for their inclusion in school ansd elsewhere. My niece does have a part-time job at Taco Bell. At times, it's a battle to make sure the people there don't take advantage of her. You know, only give her jobs like cleaning the bathrooms, emptying the trash. Things the other workers don't want to do. My niece came home from work one night yelling, "I'M A TRASHMAN!" They had made her take out the trash at work and clean up all the cigarette butts left outside the building by the workers who smoke.

  359. Corey,
I can understand your concern, but you know, if your niece takes pride in her work, and does a great job....she is winning.

It's a job that has to be accomplished, and if she is given that responsibility she should be proud. That she has a job at all, is so much more then most Downs people.

Now- if she doesn't like it - then it has to change! Because the understanding level is lower, you don't want her to lose self -esteem . ( jmo)

thanks for the insight, I tend to agree but would also like to point out that when you are on the bottom everything looks up.
I substitute taught several years ago at a small church run innercity private school. I was trying to explain the difference between working class, middle class and upperclass to a jr high social studies class. They got the idea of money but when I tried to point out that some jobs were working class I ran into trouble with my first example. I tried to use gargbage collector as an example of a working class job when a student burst out " Oh Trash man, thats a good job"

You came through with a rant with which I agree. People who praise capitalism often have not bothered to read one of their heroes, Adam Smith. Oh they can toss out "invisible hand", but don't have a clue about the ethical base of Smith, The Scottish Renaisance or his best friend, David Hume.

Capitalism was never meant to be "survival of the fittest". It cannot survive unless it protects labor. When it stops protecting the source of wealth it collapses as we have seen in many countries that are now Communist.

As to the community here. That is what makes this place different that all the other rant, rave and react sites on the web. This is a community and sometimes the neighbors get really really upset, but we are stuck with each other so we might as well try to get along or at the least ignore the folks you don't like.

  389. Jamie, what a fun site, love the Hieland Coo...

You prompted another recollection above. While in Edinburgh a few summers ago, we went to visit the tomb of Adam Smith. By coincidence, it turned out to be the anniversary of his death. I then felt truly sad at the realization of the impact of his life's work; even so, there he lay, no gathering, no commemoration, no flowers, just me and my husband as the only "mourners." In fact, adding insult to injury, there were scores of sunbathers sprawled among the headstones on that unusually hot day in Scotland.

  394. Carol...

I have no special knowledge of Palin and her motives. I have the same thing everyone else has...all the impressions I've developed over the past two months. Apparently, some of yours have been positive. Mine have not. If I had to guess, I'd guess she's motivated by the same things that motivate most politicians...hunger for importance and power...and, at the national level, guaranteed wealth. It's a good job.

I think she is disastrously unqualified for the office of vice president...and probably for the office of governor of any state. She's too uninformed for my taste, and I don't see how thinking people can listen to her and not feel alienated by her obvious lack of both information and curiosity. How can she not have an answer for such simple questions as 'what magazines and newspapers do you read?', 'what Supreme Court decisions do you agree/disagree with?', 'what is the job of the vice president?' I've heard of low-information voters, but low-information candidates??? Well, I suppose GWB was one, too....

I will also say with no proof that I don't for one second believe that she truly took on big oil. I haven't bothered to look deeper because she stopped me cold before I could care about the truth of that claim. I won't be voting for her team...probably ever, because I have such a strong preference for thinking people...but certainly not in this election cycle.

While you see a woman who is being wrongfully demeaned, I see one who is doing terrible harm to the cause of thinking woman everywhere. And I don't like it.

  395. UB---make up your mind are we staying or going? i told you a few months back when i extended my hand in friendship, even after you threatened to find me, and hurt me, that you should extend your hand to the friends that you had here before it was too late, it is never too late is it?

Posted by: SolarCrete Author Profile Page | October 28, 2008 12:03 AM

  396. Hear hear! HW

btw , that big oil pipeline deal was flop. Maybe she cut a better deal for the state on the oil they ripped off; not sure about that.

"In fact, although it is the centerpiece of Ms. Palin’s relatively brief record as governor, the pipeline might never be built, and under a worst-case scenario, the state could lose up to $500 million it committed to defray regulatory and other costs."

  397. Solar - absolutely no snark from me. I was kidding, thinking of the multitude of things and attitudes you write about. You obviously think about a lot and so your posts are very enjoyable. You also have a very big and kind heart. I've just caught up on the last couple of hours here and am amazed at the nastiness that seems to be directed at you.

I think it's kinda funny how some people feel compelled to tell others how they feel about them! I don't know if it's a desire to be a recorded part of history.

Keith Olbermann has verbally lynched both Palin and Hillary. He has become my Worst Person in the World.

I think Tweety's "button" looked like one of those 'I Voted" sticky things.

I was given to understand that the main goal of capitalism is to create a market with the best possible products at the best price.

Palin's drive to help Children with Special Needs stops hort of other people with special needs - she can think ok but her brain stops on a dime and can see nothing else after that point.

The previous posts are an example of 'what was the spark that set that off?'

I have also decided that if Time chooses a 'Person of the Decade', the most obvious choice to me is W. I can't think of anybody who has had a bigger and more
damaging effect on the world. What horrible things have come from his term. I can't think of any time in my life to match it, or even come close.

  398. Bethy---did not take it as snark----but thanks for telling me, one thing that i haven;t done to well is think about thinking---now that sounds a little weird, but i was just told that i was.

Way back somewhere on the blog is a photograph of the Adam Smith crypt. I had to go to the canongate church and graveyard because I have more than a few ancestors there. We had a very nice lunch in a pub where my multi great grand used to have a Dairy business

  400. Bethy...

I'm not sure Palin has any drive to help children with special needs. Yes, her youngest has Downs...and I've read that she has a sister who has a kid with autism...but I've heard NOTHING that tells me what form her help would take. I've just heard her ask that we elect her, and then children with special needs will have a friend in the WH. Thanks, but I have friends. I need someone who offers a truly constructive plan that will assure me that there really will be help...not only for children with special needs, but also for the adults they become.

The one thing I've heard her focus on is school vouchers, so parents of all children...those with disabilities included...can have school choice. Does she have any clue that the current laws governing the education of special needs students do not extend to private schools? I doubt it! If she did, she would know that it will take major legislative changes before it will be truly safe for most special needs kids to attend private schools. Private schools have no obligation to provide paras, therapists, etc., as the public schools do.

Obama has some major gaps in his platform, too, when it comes to dealing with the disability community. I don't have a problem with his stance on educating them, but I have major problems with his beliefs about their medical needs. Haven't heard Palin mention their medical needs.

    My two cents worth....

  401. Solar,

Don't be apologetic, go for it. if you got a problem with someone, let them know. UB's a big girl. She said she will deal with anything you , Patsi, me or anyone has to say. If english, written or spoken slows you down, then more reason to be straight forward. We're all about being big boys and girls here.

I'm glad you're here, more diversity of opinion. I fight (words) with several here but doesn't mean I don't care for them, except a couple folks. So be yourself.

  403. Rez---thanks--please don't look at it as being apologetic, i always try to go that extra little step that might avoid unpleasentness,,,i wont stand by and see osh made a victim, she has asked to be left alone,,,,if they think my putting out the hand of peace is weakness---so be it--

  404. "How can she not have an answer for such simple questions as 'what magazines and newspapers do you read?"

Because the only real answer to that question is " F**k you"

  405. Palin cut the funding for Special Olympics so that tells me all I need to know about her concerns for Special Needs Children.

    Posted by: anon-paranoid Author Profile Page | October 28, 2008 12:46 AM

  406. Oh, harborwoman _ totally agree with you. I was speaking more to Palin's claim she made again the other day that she will work etc on needs of children with same - you know, her mantra, her drone. I think she looks a little uncomfortable holding that baby, and think it must be "advisors" who have her doing it. It's unnecessary and the older girl seems to like to hold him.

    And vouchers????????????????What nerve!

Posted by: bethyboo Author Profile Page | October 28, 2008 12:54 AM

  407. I really don't understand your comment, Jack. I'd have an answer other than 'fuck you' to the question about what I read...and I would expect most thinking people to be able to respond without invective. Would you explain why you think she should have responded in that manner? I really don't get it.

Posted by: harborwoman Author Profile Page | October 28, 2008 12:54 AM

  408. Jack,

Damn, that wasn't a gotcha type question. It was her first major interview and people knew little about her.So it was more in line with "tell us a little about yourself". What do you read? what's you fav ____? At that point she had no reason to be defensive as you suggest.

Posted by: Rezdog Author Profile Page | October 28, 2008 12:56 AM

  409. Bethy...

I'll be charitable and say I really do think she'd like to help children with special needs. I just don't think she has any true understanding of those needs (yet)...and I think she'll find that lots of their needs will run right smack into her Republican ideology. But I don't think Obama has much more understanding of the true needs than she does. He just has better staff. Only time is going to tell whether or not he really gets it, and can really help.
