Without a fundamental shift in the news, John McCain now has to run his presidential campaign on economic issues that put him at a fatal disadvantage. My guess? If he and President George W. Bush cannot shift minds back to national security the Republicans will lose the White House.

It keeping with all the bleeding metaphors flowing these days , I have to say that all that Palin did was put a band-aid on a sucking chest wound.
And for that matter, congress managed to do the same thing.
Now I have to drag my 50 lb. bag of pinto beans down to the bunker.

Well,
I'm curious to see where the "issue" needs to come for it to have an impact...ie Middle East or Europe more of a factor than Africa or Asia

HAIR! Re: Sample emails below I have received from many Olbermann viewers who seem to think I dye my hair (see video in current post). The facts: My beard is almost completely gray, but for reasons I cannot explain, at 52 years old there is not a single gray hair on my head. Last night on MSNBC was a perfect storm, as I do need a haircut, had showered before show, and makeup artist blasted me with hair spray on top of the wet hair, apparently creating the effect of a dye job. Some of you know me and can hopefully attest to the fact that my hair color is natural. If it would help to dye some gray into my hair, I would be happy to do so and stop this madness. My God, people, the economy is in shambles and surely this is not worth so much discussion . . .
Sample Email No. 1:
“For goodness sakes, look to your friend Keith. Cut out the black hair dye. Looks like a cheap Italian. a bit of gray is handsome. You are a good looking man, don't try to be 20 years old.”
Sample Email No. 2:
“Dear Craig Crawford,
And I'm coming . . . a 71 year old former redheaded woman who's respected the greyings of actors Ronald Coleman, Cary Grant, Paul Newman; broadcasters Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokow, et al. Craig, you look teriible with your newly brown dye, capusuled on your head and eyebrows. Let's get back to basics, and who you really are! Woman love those greys that creep into men's hairlines as they age. Gives them distinguishment, authority . . . know what they're talking about, not trying to regain youth. Craig, as a redhead, was always pointed out as one. Later, thought going blond would give me more cashe. Then realizedI already had it as a redhead, a minority. Today I wear a white/grey, w/tinge of auburn on my head. All natural. Realized that I had the greatest to begin with . . . red hair . . . and content with evolutionaized hair color. Even your eyebrow are starkinly brown (did Stacy and Kelly of "What Not to Wear" give you a makeover?! Suspect not, as their hairdresser and makeup artist would have made you look more who you are; distinguished journalist, not an odd pack.Let's get back to the journalistic look of the Tom Browkows, the Edward R. Murrows; and Keith Olbermann. Nothing to be ashamed of greying manes; it's the opposite, as they surely have proved; and prove today. We need real men!”

Craig there will only be one issue for the McCain campaign from now till November fourth, demonizing Obama. McCain is now a cornered animal, and like any cornered animal he has no choice but to attack. Obama has effectively pinned McCain's campaign down to two states, Ohio and Florida. Florida has just about slipped out of his grasp, and I think pulling out of Michigan will cost him Ohio. The debate on Tuesday night will be an Mean Old Man vs. No Drama Obama. I understand that anything can happen, that being said this election is firming up, American's are growing comfortable with the idea of Obama as president and once that started to happen McCain was/is doomed. History is against him, as John Edwards so aptly put it when he pulled out of the race.

Craig,
Secret Ceremony
Leonora, a prostitute, mourns the death by drowning years earlier of her daughter. She encounters a strange waif-like girl, Cenci, who bears a strong resemblance to her lost child. Cenci is herself struck by the great resemblance of Leonora to her own mother, whose death the mentally unstable Cenci has been unable to accept or even acknowledge. The two women quickly develop a symbiotic relationship, moving in and out of the illusion that each is the lost loved one of the other. The complicating factor is the arrival of Albert, Cenci's stepfather, whose incestuous attachment to her may well be the cause of her mind's unbalance. With Albert's arrival, no one in the strange trio is safe

Well now we know why McCain is pulling out of Michigan:
"It now has 350 paid staffers in Florida, a budget of at least $39 million and more than 50 offices everywhere from heavily Republican Pensacola to the Democratic stronghold of Fort Lauderdale.
Mike DuHaime, Mr. McCain’s national political director, acknowledged that the McCain budget was smaller (he did not give a dollar amount), though it is expected to grow now that the campaign has pulled out of Michigan. Mr. DuHaime also said it was clear that the Democrats were “trying to emulate what Republicans have done” by contesting areas where they had little hope of winning. "

Remember, george will says money is speech. So, the highest bidder is just engaging in free speech. republicans are supposed to love that casuistry because they usually spend X2 what the Dems spend.
It only becomes "sale to the highest bidder" in this one year out of the last 44 in which Dems are raising the most money.

This is why they should loose -- "For Sarah Palin, Thursday's night’s debate was an open-book exam. She spent much of the evening methodically reading and rehearsing answers from “carefully scripted talking points.” Palin’s notes were largely hidden from plain view, resting behind the lectern where she stood. Because the cable and network television stations did not show a split screen of the debate, most viewers could not see that, during Joe Biden’s answers, Palin spent almost all her time looking down and studiously reading her notes. But viewers did see that when Palin delivered her answers, she would repeatedly glance down to check her talking points. ThinkProgress has compiled a video documenting some of the instances where it was clear to the audience that Palin was propped up by written responses. Watch a video compilation."

Sarah Palin on today's college gridiron matchups:
"Ya know, I'm gonna be watchin' some college football today, doggonit. And I'll really be annoyed if all these hard-workin' coaches put their offensive teams out there on that big, beautiful field to play the game the American people wanna see -- only to have some darn opposing coach put a defense out there on the field to filter that message. And then to have all those inside elite sportswriters clobber them by reporting what happens. If that happens, I think they should just start playing basketball."

Fear stalls bailout's effect on credit market
Sam Zuckerman, Chronicle Staff Writer
Saturday, October 4, 2008
With or without bailout bill, U.S. stocks drop (Bloomberg...
Anyone who thought approval of a financial bailout plan would cheer up markets and give the economy a shot of momentum got a rude awakening Friday.
The initial verdict was dismal. Stocks added new losses to close out a highly volatile week that saw the sharpest drops in share prices since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, as well as some significant upswings. And the loan markets whose troubles are at the core of the financial crisis showed no signs of unfreezing.

This morning's Times opinion section has a full-court press against Mrs Palin. They must be really scared of her.
Her remarks about the authority of the VP are being hit the most.
I've looked at the Constitution (but not the 200-plus years of developed interpretation, nor the contemporary writings of the founders) and have my own understanding of what it says.
Basically, I see two constitutional 'attributes' of the office:
--Taking over the executive branch should the president leave the office vacant.
--Being president of the senate (with the authority to break ties).
What I don't understand is what authorities are inherent in being president, i.e., presiding officer, of that, or any, body.
Would a president be able to recognize individual requests to speak? Would a president be able to rule someone out of order? etc. etc.
I make no claims of having any special knowledge of the Constitution; I simple want to gain more knowledge.
Oh, and if the VP is inseparable from the president, why can't the president deputize the VP to perform specific presidential functions, in the name of the president, with the president ultimately being accountable for the performance of those functions?

letters to the editor, Charleston Post and Courier
Blaming the poor
Commentators in The Post and Courier have indicated that the recent failures of financial institutions are the fault of consumers purchasing homes they could not afford.
These buyers ("nothing down," and "cheaper than rent") apparently forced bankers to provide subprime ("exorbitant interest rates") loans, with mortgage origination fees and high late charges.
The buyers then apparently demanded that investment bankers bundle these high-risk mortgages with lower-risk mortgages into securities. They then urged bond-rating firms (remunerated by the bankers) to ignore the buyers' inability to pay and pronounced the securities "market grade."
The homebuyers then cajoled reluctant high-commission stockbrokers to persuade investors to include these securities in their portfolios.
But, most impressively, these unsophisticated buyers convinced insurance giants like AIG to sell "credit default swaps" (insurance policies) in case the whole thing came tumbling down.
Commentators failed to note that the ability to service homeowners' mortgages might have improved had the real wages of working Americans not shrunk during these years of "trickle down" economic prosperity.
Nevertheless, if the poor are to be blamed for Wall Street's pains, there remains in this world, ironically, a measure of justice.

Ping you are a broken record. You have offered positively NO evidence to sustain your claim that Barack Obama or the Democrats are about the "same failed fiscal policy". The people don't get it because you are off your fricken rocker on this one. If you are saying that because they are both capitalist parties, I can agree with you.
The biggest mistake that is being made is that the US Government does not just nationalize the banks and take control of them immediately as has been done here. It's a far more sensible approach.

I wish McCain supporters would just stop insulting everyone's intelligence (and yes, that includes their own) by claiming that he will be an agent of change or a reformer, or everyone's favorite maverick.
McCain is none of those things anymore if he ever was. He is doing and saying anything he needs to win a presidential election.
If that means embracing a man that used horribly racist attitudes in South Carolina to derail his presidential campaign he's done that. If it means accepting noxious conservative attitudes that he never held before now such as advocating the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, he's done that. It that means making the most cynical of all moves by adding a woman to his ticket in the hopes that the feeble minded of Hillary's supporters will flock to his campaign because his running mate has ovaries, he's done that.
This is not an honorable man any more. He has changed his core beliefs and values in an effort to win the White House.
It is your right to vote for him, no one is disputing that. Just stop calling him a reformer or a man that wants to see the status quo changed in Washington. It isn't true and you know in your heart of hearts that is the case.
So stop the nonsense. Support your candidate if you so choose but in the words of Frank Drebin from the "Police Squad" movies, "Don't piss down my back and tell me its raining ..."

Flatus,
I guess you've never been to Earth. The sun always rises in the East here, whether you are at Cam Ranh Bay, Buenos Aires, or Hollywood. The movie, "the green berets", very cleary showed the sun at the horizon. John Wayne and the context of the film both identified the event as the sunrise. Yet, it is obvious to anyone who has ever been to Cam Ranh that the camera had turned away from the base, to face West, across the Bay. The map you supplied above, clearly shows that Cam Ranh Bay lies WEST of the Peninsula. I wrote that the movie depicted the sun rising over the bay, not over the ocean. Therefore, if the solar event is on the western horizon, and the movie calls it a sunrise, the film's finale is a final comedic FU of Hollywood epic proportions. You either didn't read what I actually wrote, or your brain didn't process my statement effectively, even after seeing the map.
Get some glasses or see a shrink.

Sarah Palin is the ernest student who has been busy cramming for a verbal exam and doing passable work in giving answers to the questions, but no further. She is not delving deeper and often sounds like she is quoting memorized campaign literature rather than having a full grasp of the issues. She's studied hard, but is definitely intellectually weaker than the professor, at least at this moment in time.

On a completely different subject...maybe I missed the discussion, but the Wachovia buyout battle between Citi and Wells Fargo is kind of interesting, and goes to the heart of the role of the Fed in propping up the banking system...
On Monday, Citbank made a bid for the banking portion of Wachovia for $2.1 billion (excluding the investment and asset management divisions), with the FDIC to take over the mortgage portfolio. At that time, Citi signed an exclusivity contract with Wachovia.
Because they needed more time to conduct due diligence on the entire operation, Wells subsequently made a $15 billion bid on Wednesday for all of Wachovia's assets, including all their bad paper with no governmental assistance.
Citi is arguing that because they have an exclusivity contract, Wells' offer should not be considered. The FDIC appears to have no problem with continuing their partnership with Citi in the matter, even though Wells has made an alternative bid that would not call for the FDIC intervention.
To me, this is a very interesting and troubling development. In essence, we have the Treasury Department, in part through an intermediary, bidding on the assets of a corporation in competition with a private company.
It is my understanding the role of the FDIC is supposed to protect the assets of individuals in the event of a failure. In this case, we have the FDIC acting to take ownership of assets when private sector alternatives are available. In other words, we have the Treasury Department in competition with the market without equal access for competition.
I'm not sure I'm real comfortable with that...

That one cracked me up ! What ARE they going to change? The power elite? doubt it. The redistribution of wealth from the lower / middle classes to the upper eschelon? doubt it. Bring us back to a civil society that adheres to separation of Church and State? doubt it. Reel in over-paid CEO salaries and stopping jobs from being shipped overseas to 3rd world countries where workers there can be exploited? doubt it. Create a national understanding that, in spite of what the Repugs have always said, health care is a basic human right for all? doubt it. Stop all the privatization and deregulation that has caused the economy to tank? doubt it. Reel in the credit card industry that charges exorbitant interest rates that keep Americans credit enslaved? doubt it. Stop the ill-advised war in Iraq? No doubt about it... NO !
Sure am glad to hear that are the model of change...

Here is a group I used to be a member of: The Democratic Socialists of America.
"Democratic Socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives."
http://www.dsausa.org/dsa.html
I realize that in the very conservative USA, such an idea will probably not be realistic and sadly, I think most of us are the worse off for it.
Also I do believe in limited capitalism. Small to medium businesses privately owned. I would nationalize the multi-nationals so that their political and financial power could not be used to further oppress working people around the globe.
I am a business owner. Sometimes I am frustrated at the benefits my employees get... benefits that I do not myself receive. Yet, I am grateful that the system has these safeguards and that nearly everyone is unionized and wages are determined via negotiations between unions, government and private companies. People might think this is a recipe for disaster, but where I live, in Flanders.... we have the highest standard of living in virtually all of Europe.
There are still inequities in the system, and there are certainly super rich. But not to the extremes we see in the USA. And even with our high taxes and the world credit crisis, people are not losing their houses the way folks in the states are.
I vote Democrat because I know the socialists cannot possibly win. The word has become too poisonous in our popular and social culture. Thus I work with the Democrats who at least try to correct some of the inequalities while remaining firmly one of the two major capitalist parties.

Tom, I'm too much of a capitalist to agree with you on that, but I do believe there probably needs to be a government-run auction-type market to straighten out the mortgage problem.
A large part of the current situation is that there is not an effective market mechanism to set the price of these types of securities. At this time, there are few too many buyers for the amount of mortgage paper out there, with few too many people having access to the information about that paper. As a result, we don't have a very good idea of the "true worth" of these securities. This then requires companies to turn to "preferred" buyers (primarily the Chinese because they've got all the money) to provide the capital needed.
If there was an open auction of these securities where many more buyers had access to the market, the "true" value of the securities would be set by the market itself. IMHO, there would be a short-term reevaluation of the value of the securities, but at least we would then have a handle on the true worth of the securities that were being exchanged. This in turn would bring a measure of stability into the market.
The government has been doing this for years for treasury notes, which has (until recently) provided the financial stability for which the US is known. In the national interest of financial stability, there is no reason this type of market could not be extended to mortgage securities as well.

What makes you think government is any better for you than private industry, Tom? The US is already a corporate-owned plutocracy. Government is not your friend; never was, never will be.
Posted by: champ | October 4, 2008 3:38 PM
Champ it is that way because government has been in bed too much helping corporations do their own will instead of reeling them in and controlling the excesses. In the history of the US, the executive branch has pretty much always had the open door for the rich capitalists. Remember, the US constitution was created to allow a standing army to protect minority interests (monied property owners, etc.) from the agrarian majority who were agitating to get a piece of the pie and out from under the robber barons' debt clauses.
The multinationals are becoming more powerful than the nation state. The only way to reel them in is to change the economic system. Not going to happen I know, but it's worth at least reading about.

I agree----I may be wrong but I think there are 3 principal functions of the government'
1- Military/ security and safety of it's citizens
2-Financial security
3-Maintenance of highways,bridges, roads etc.
During the last eight years under the republicans they have failed, fallen way short. They can ( and very often do) confuse the citizenry, but they can't expunge what is very apparent now.
What is sad is thast they just take turns f---ing things up one way or the other, it will never end. GREED GREED and more GREED.

sophisticated project underway by a consortium of USA and Anglo oil companies that will syphon off vast amounts of Mexico's oil that lies underneath the Gulf of Mexico. Through a huge offshore oil platform strategically constructed adjacent to an immense Mexican oil field, Chevron , Shell and British Petroleum will be syphoning over 100,000 barrels of oil per day that rightfully belongs to the people of Mexico. At the current price of oil of $138/barrel, the theft will amount to approximately 167 million dollars per year. Please refer to graphic detailing this sinister plan at left.
There appears to be no limit to the greed of oil company giants. What they can not conquer through military aggression, as in Iraq, they will obtain through common thievery. The thievery by Chevron , Shell and British Petroleum of Mexico's oil is no different than if your neighbor siphoned and stole your gasoline from your automobile. There has to be, and if not there should be, an international law against this type of larceny.

Obama gets high marks on credit crisis
With the dust still settling on a bailout, Barack Obama's response to the Wall Street credit crisis appears to have helped the Democrat open up a lead over Republican John McCain in Pennsylvania.
Obama's overall lead in the poll has increased from 4 points to 12 points in the last nine days, hitting 51 percent to McCain's 39 percent on Friday.
http://www.mcall.com/news/elections/local/all-a4_5poll.6616108oct04,0,3803430.story?track=rss
McCain will start reducing his forces in PA in about 10 days to focus all his efforts on Ohio and Florida. Very soon it's not going to be about him winning, it's going to be about him trying to reduce his loss to a some what respectable figure.

I know they don't call any of the states until California closes. They took so much flack about declaring a winner and possibly affecting the vote in the western states. So that is 11:00 PM Eastern. My question was about Hawaii and Alaska because those states don't close until three hours after California.

>>My question was about Hawaii and Alaska because those states don't close until three hours after California.
Unless things are Electorally tied going into the Western Time Zone, AK and HI don't make a difference (but wouldn't it be cool if it boiled down to Hawaii...). Unless we end up like 2000 again, we'll know who won no later than Midnight EST, probably sooner if California doesn't come into play.
Posted by: spike | October 4, 2008 4:52 PM
Lard I've never been more confident of an election outcome in my entire life. And not just the for the president either. Obama will be elected with a full mandate with heavy majorities in both chambers on the Hill. And he's going to need it to, no president has faced the challenges he's got ahead of him since FDR. McCain is doing a lot of damage to his party in the way he's behaved over the last 3 weeks, and if you read into the numbers in the polls there is an anger at the GOP coming to the surface with the vast majority of the electorate. They are very tuned in, they are very afraid for the future of the country and it's standing in the world, and they are very angry.
Posted by: BrianInNYC

Here's a good piece on the Catholic vote that just went up at NYT.
"In a departure from previous elections, Democrats and liberal Catholic groups are waging a fight within the church, arguing that the Democratic Party better reflects the full spectrum of church teachings.
It is a contest for credibility among observant Catholics, with each faction describing itself as a defender of “life.” But the two sides disagree over how to address the “intrinsic evil” of abortion.
The escalating efforts by more-liberal Catholics are provoking a vigorous backlash from some bishops and the right."

He's got to win one of seven decidedly iffy states (Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Colorado, Missouri). You want to rely on Colorado?
The race could still go either way, and may well turn on things that aren't even in the news at the moment.

Dispatch from ballot-design hell: I just got my Florida sample ballot in the mail today, and there are more than a DOZEN presidential candidates on the ballot here. That's even more than there were in 2000.
In case anyone doesn't remember, the proliferation of candidates back in 2000 is the driving factor that contributed to the "Butterfly Ballot" and assorted other design flaws that produced voter confusion, tens of thousands of errors resulting in discarded votes, and ended up costing Gore the state.
Well, at least the Orange County ballot is well designed and not too confusing this year. Let's hope we can say the same for the other 66 counties in the state.

Julie: The mere fact that Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee in itself represents "change." The Republicans have tried to counter that by putting a woman on their ticket. Nice try, but it has been done before by the Democrats.
One must give the Republicans points for realizing that the country is craving something different. Problem is, McCain cannot claim he wants to change things when he won't extricate himself from Bush and his failed policies.
As others have pointed out, McCain and Governor Avon-Lady have not given the voters any indication that their policies will differ from those of Bush/Cheney. We've been there ... done that. Look at the mess we're in!
While the moniker "McSame" for McCain is cutesy and snarky it is also true. McCain can use the word "change" all he wants but he can't separate himself from Bush for fear of losing the Republican base. At this point it may be all he has.

Hi UB,
From what you've said I'm surmising your friend is from Pine Ridge. You don't need to pass along my jokes about her home :-) It's just that I have family (nieces, nephews in-laws) living on several of the reservations in SD and everyone teases the others about their home areas. Some of it funny, others pretty hard. You're in the "City" right? I 'd be more curious to learn what brought her there and if she has Am-Ind friends there.

I 'd like to know more also....she's in the city . Yeah me too in the city).....
I 'll find out what level of internet she knows, and maybe you can learn more about each other. She was very interested in what I knew about you...which was very little ; )
BTW her dog's name is "Stitch" because by the time they adopted the dog it had had so many surgeries. The name stuck, she is pro Obama, maybe a Hillery convert, can't remember....

Settle down big guy, or I'll start calling you extra terrestrial, you can make a good Politician the way you took a little of what I said, and a little of what Lard said,.and then extrapolated to fit a little story line of your own making, not gay by a long shot, but
Little short story----had a gay worker( he knew that I knew that he knew and so on that he was gay, but we never talked aboutit)he was also my friend, Dick (ha ha ha--not his real name)and I went out to lunch once at a restaurant that had a fashion show, it started about 5 min, after we were served, it was a female and male, both modeling underwear, the trouble was that I was seated in such a way that I could only see the male, modle , and he could only see the female model, we looked at each other and busted out laughing, pick-up the table swung it around and changed seats, he was so happy, he paid for lunch.

New disaster befalls Benelux bank giant FORTIS.
BRUSSELS/LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) – Belgium and Luxembourg scrambled on Saturday to find a buyer for the remains of troubled financial group Fortis (FOR.BR) (FOR.AS) and mulled a further nationalization after the Netherlands took over its Dutch units.

The European banking crises is brought to you by the courtesy of the United States financiers and the corrupt Republican administration that turned a totally blind eye to shady deals and financial excesses outside the norms of what was correct and our wise. Furthermore, it appears that even after Enron, very little serious restructuring was really done, and certainly not to the banks.

GOP Strategists Whisper Fears Of Greater Losses in November
In the Senate, where Democrats have been on offense all year as they try to attain a filibuster-proof, 60-seat majority, Republican incumbents are suddenly teetering in North Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia because of the economic crisis, according to several GOP strategists closely tracking the contests.

"GOP operatives said the party's declining fortunes are rooted in a series of events over the past two weeks, including McCain's decision to suspend his campaign in order to help broker a deal on the rescue plan and Republican opposition that doomed the bill in a House vote on Monday. Those incidents helped reinforce voter impressions that Washington is broken and that Republicans bear the brunt of the blame, the party insiders said. "

McCain officials had said early in the weekend that they plan to begin advertising after Tuesday’s debate that will tie Obama to convicted money launderer Tony Rezko and former Weathermen radical William Ayers.
But Obama isn’t waiting to respond. His campaign is going up Monday on national cable stations with a scathing ad saying: “Three quarters of a million jobs lost this year. Our financial system in turmoil. And John McCain? Erratic in a crisis. Out of touch on the economy. No wonder his campaign wants to change the subject.
“Turn the page on the financial crisis by launching dishonorable, dishonest ‘assaults’ against Barack Obama. Struggling families can't turn the page on this economy, and we can't afford another president who is this out of touch.”
Then Obama says: “I'm Barack Obama and I approved this message.”

In keeping with the earlier hair theme, I have an Al Gore story to relate. He told the story tonight at our JJ Dinner about a recent restaurant visit. While having dinner one evening, he noticed one of the waitresses starring at him as she walked by. Later, she walked by and stared again. Finally, she stopped by his table and said, " You know if you dyed your hair black you would look just like Al Gore." Not knowing what to do he thanked her at which time she said, " Wow, you even sound like him, too."
It was the old Al Gore that showed up tonight. He was funny, entertaining, looked good, and spoke with passion. This Al Gore would have been a great President. The Al Gore that ran in 2000, not so much.

I have two family members who work there, one at the university and the other at the art museum--haven't heard of problems they might have had.
Both my grandparents went to school there, my mom got her undergraduate degree there, had a niece get her doctorate there, and I took a summer course in French there while I was in elementary school.

There are about 400.000 frozen embryos ready to be implanted in willing wombs. There have been about 100 "snowflake" babies born. A few of them even got to meet the president
Now why don't you do something useful and go roundup a whole bunch of right wing uteri so that those poor chilly zygotes don't get freezer burn and have to be destroyed.
You seem you care so much about "life" that they can't be used for research, so you absolutely have to do the right thing and gather hundreds of thousands of pregnancy machines.

Holy shit here's some outstanding poll news!
Amid growing concerns about the economy, Ohio Democrats are coming home to Sen. Barack Obama, giving him a 7-point advantage in a new Dispatch Poll as the volatile presidential campaign swings into its final month.
The Illinois senator's lead of 49 percent to 42 percent over Republican Sen. John McCain comes at an especially opportune time for Obama because thousands of Ohioans already are casting ballots in the state's first presidential election allowing any registered voter to vote absentee. The new setup takes away some of the heft from the adage "the only poll that counts is the one on Election Day."

Well with these two latest polls, especially the ohio one I think your prediction may be more accurate as of today! I think McCain is making a real mistake going all GORDO, the people only care about one thing, the economy. If McCain has any hope of stemming the tide he better come up with something real to say on the matter other than the tired old repug mantra of "they are going to raise your taxes"

In all probability, the final popular vote won't be known for several days (possibly weeks) due to counting the last of the provisional ballots. It would make a good percentage to put up as part of the contest. At the moment, I'm thinking 55/45.
The networks seem to be observing the "no declaration" until the west coast polls close which is why the time starts at 11:00 PM Tweety and KO will probably be kept in separate padded cells to prevent a wrestling match.
I'll set it up any way that makes sense to the majority of folks playing. What numbers would you like?

The only "transfer" of embryos that occurs in the baby biz is transfer of a fertilized embryo - or two - to the womb of a woman who will serve as the surrogate for her own or someone else's fertilized eggs after they have been fertilized in vitro. I think you've been watching too mch of the sci-fi channel.
http://www.drmalpani.com/book/chapter25c.html#How%20is%20embryo%20transfer%20performed
The monitoring that is required to transfer an embryo within the first 2-3 days would make it pretty difficult to extract a good quality embryo - that's the term the IVF people use, not me - from a donor pregnant woman (and how would she know within 2-3 days anyway?) You right wing crazies are not only hypocritical on this issue, but you are also shockingly uninformed - and driven by your zeal to punish women who have become pregnant and don't wish to have a baby for whatever reason rather than a reasoned, informed point of view.

Aside from the obvious problems of being a somewhat crazy old coot with a mean idiot as a running mate, here's McCain's big problem -
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/election_2008/electoral_count.html#previous_changes
Unless something changes big time, his chances of winning enough states to win the electoral college keep decreasing as the election nears.

Rezdog,
You talking about Pine Ridge higher up reminded me that I keep meaning to ask you if you are familiar with the artist Terri Saul. She's a Native American painter based in Berkeley whose father was a Choctaw chief and an amazing painter in his own right.
Check out her website. I'm steering you to the bicycle drawings, which are my absolute favorites -- but the whole website is worth exploring. Jamie, I have a feeling you'd enjoy it too.
